Brazilian power segment impacted by COVID-19
Brazil’s power generation, transmission and distribution segments are experiencing major challenges as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The country’s National Electric Power Agency (ANEEL), the sector’s national regulator, has suspended six power generation and transmission auctions originally scheduled for 2020. This includes the A-4 and A-6 auctions for new power projects as well as an annual auction for new transmission line projects. Power distribution companies, meanwhile, are bearing the brunt of lower demand in the commercial and industrial sectors. On the other hand, active projects in the conventional power and renewables segments are not expected to be cancelled or put on hold, as they are supported by long-term power purchase agreements with distributors and/or large industrial consumers.
We hope you and your families are keeping well amid the COVID-19 outbreak. We would like to restate that, at the time of writing, our team is working from home and all office lines are being forwarded to the respective EIC staff.

Ecopetrol cuts 2020 CAPEX by US$1.2bn
The Colombian national oil company has announced that it will cut its capital expenditure by US$1.2bn and operational expenses by US$500m this year as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and the downturn in oil prices. Following this reduction, Ecopetrol’s new CAPEX target is now US$3.3-4.3bn. The company’s oil production target for 2020 remains the same at 745,000-760,000 barrels per day. Ecopetrol’s breakeven oil price is estimated at US$30-35 per barrel, which poses serious challenges for the company amid the current downturn.

RIO DE JANEIRO 20 Y E A R S
EIC celebrates 20 years in Brazil
This month the Energy Industries Council is proud to celebrate 20 years in Brazil since it first opened its doors in Rio de Janeiro.
The original office was inaugurated in Avenida Nilo
Peçanha, on 22 May 2000. In 2009, EIC Rio moved into its current office in Avenida Rio Branco, 89, on the 26 th floor.
Since 2009 the office began promoting events and strengthening ties with major players in the industry as well as prominent government figures, thanks to the initiative of its current Head of Americas, Clarisse Rocha. From 2009 to the present day, EIC Rio has hosted 159 events, training and now webinars, with 5,321 attendees from 1,258 companies.
Much has changed in the Brazilian energy sector since 2000. Already a key oil and gas player back then, Brazil more than doubled its oil production over the next 20 years. Massive pre-salt discoveries heralded the beginning of a new era for the country’s oil and gas sector, bringing new technologies, investment and business opportunities for EIC members around the world.
Vijay Rangarajan, British Ambassador to Brazil, commented: “Congratulations to the EIC. Over the last 20 years, EIC has been an important partner for HMG in Brazil and to the energy sector, delivering high-value content and comprehensive support to its members in a fast-changing world. The importance of energy and the energy transition has never been higher for the world, Brazil and the UK. Long may our collaboration continue.” EIC works closely with suppliers interested in doing business with Petrobras, the national oil company, who have consolidated its position as the world’s largest FPSO operator with multi-billion dollar projects in its portfolio. Over 100 companies received EIC support to get registered with the oil major. Meanwhile, an array of oil companies and independent players entered the market and are developing their own ambitious E&P projects.
EIC has nearly 700 members worldwide, and around 200 active in South America. The Rio de Janeiro office has played a great role throughout the years in aiding its members and colleagues to achieve their goals. Through the years the office has supported several companies to start operations in Brazil such as Aggreko and London Offshore Consultants.
Services from this region also include bringing the best of the UK supply chain to key countries in South America across almost 30 trade delegations. For the next 20 years to come, EIC Rio remains focused on providing services with excellence, helping the supply chain to win business across the globe.
Former president of the Rio office, Ian Wilkinson commented: “This a significant milestone for EIC. Since 2000 the Rio office has evolved into a much slicker operation providing programmes which are helping companies who have lack of market knowledge and exporting opportunities/entry into Brazil.”

Example of EIC Inform service delivery ABC Valves is a manufacturer and supply company to major projects and applications in the UK oil and gas industry. Its products meet complex specifications for end users such as BP, Shell, Equinor and ExxonMobil, among others. The company has been active in the UK and Middle East region for over 50 years with much success. However, its attempts to infiltrate the US market have proved difficult. The company undertook several, expensive, market visits to find they were not meeting with the right contacts, never would receive a response from follow-up emails or calls; or could not get an appointment at all. The MD took forward 40 hours of EIC Inform which provided the following: • A detailed conversation with EIC staff (analyst and regional director) to understand the company’s offering and an understanding of efforts taken thus far to entering the US market. • The EIC undertook extensive EICDataStream research in identifying specific project opportunities over a two five-year period, and identified specific contacts consisting of category management with operators, and front-end engineering and procurement for specific EPCs known to be potentially bidding on specific projects. • The EIC then undertook outreach to over 40 contacts in the USA with operators and contractors, introducing
ABC Valves, its specific product offering and how it could solve problems for operators and EPCs. This outreach also ascertained interest in meeting with ABC Valves during a planned visit to Houston for OTC. • The EIC received interest from eight companies to meet with ABC Valves, and eight inquires for further information.
The EIC confirmed eight meetings developing a visit programme for ABC Valves and put ABC Valves in direct contact with all 16 companies. • The project took the EIC about 60 hours to complete over a course of six weeks. Feedback from the client was excellent, and they have commissioned a second EIC Inform service for Mexico. • Within one year, the company had received several orders and opened a virtual office with the EIC in Houston.
