Sector analysis Operational additions in 2022

In the first week of January, EICAssetMap completed coverage of the Americas adding 20,000 new assets to the database. We have coverage on assets globally except China, Russia and North Korea. With more than 40,000 assets tracked on EICAssetMap across 131 countries, we are now able to produce global updates on operations and give you deep dives into information and trends we have seen over the last 12 months.

In Ukraine, many developments have been prioritised to move away from reliance on Russian gas resources. In Europe three new LNG regasification facilities became operational after a programme was commissioned to fast track these developments. An example of prioritising projects in Europe, the Eemshaven LNG terminal in the Netherlands was revived in March. The project was completed in September, consisting of two FSRUs that will work in tandem to provide an annual regasification capacity of 8bn cubic metres.

Several projects were commissioned in 2022, which will help Europe move away from Russian gas supplies. One of these developments was the Norway-Denmark-Poland baltic pipeline, brought online in November. For Poland, the pipeline supplies gas from Norway, thus helping diversify supplies away from dependence on Russia, while mitigating transit risk on deliveries via Belarus or Ukraine. The project was classified as a project of common interest (PCI) by the EU.

Poland commissioned four new pipelines in 2022. One of the larger developments commissioned was the PolandLithuania gas pipeline, completed in May. A 522km natural gas interconnector between Poland and Lithuania, it has a starting capacity from Poland to Lithuania of 2.4bn cubic metres per year and from Lithuania to Poland of 1.0bn cubic metres per year. The project acts to diversify the two nations dependence away from Russian natural gas.

Last year, six new offshore wind farms came into production globally adding 3.7GW. The Noshiro Port wind farm was commissioned in Japan in December with a capacity of 84MW. The other five developments entering operations in 2022 were in Europe, specifically France, Italy and the UK. The largest of these was Hornsea Two, commissioned in August in the southern North Sea, with a capacity of 1.3GW across 165 turbines.

Onshore wind developments increased also, with 128 new projects being commissioned in the last 12 months, adding 22GW to the global output comprising of more than 4,000 turbines. Over half of these developments (66 projects) came online in Europe adding 5.5GW. The most significant have been made in Sweden, with 380 turbines installed across 11 wind farms generating 1.7GW.

AssetMap

Solar additions have also been on the increase. The largest capacity addition by asset type in 2022 came from solar, with 159 projects online in 2022 – adding 25.7GW to the grid. The US added 45 new solar farms in 2022, a total of 7.1GW.

In total, 15 hydroelectric projects came online in 2022, adding 13.8GW to the grid. The largest of these developments was commissioned in Ethiopia in February. The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) hydroelectric power plant, consisting of fourteen 400MW units and two 375MW units, has a total capacity of 6,450MW.

Much has been talked about hydrogen production and during 2022 six new green hydrogen facilities were brought into production in Europe. The largest of these was the Puertollano hydrogen plant (hydrogensolar-battery hybrid), brought into production in May. This project is a solar-plus-storage system and a 20MW electrolyser to produce green hydrogen. The developer signed an agreement with a fertiliser producer, which will use the hydrogen at its ammonia plant. The project involves a 100MW solar photovoltaic (PV) park, a lithiumion battery system with storage capacity of 20MWh and the electrolyser. Now operational, the plant prevents the emission of 39,000t of CO2 a year.

How has the EIC helped you through the years? An interesting story to tell?

Bechtel and the EIC have engaged on many occasions, with the EIC assisting us in project development and our organisations combining resources for global supply chain outreach. Senior Bechtel supply chain managers are active participants on the EIC’s board and the regional advisory board for North and Central America. We also participate in EIC extracurricular events such as regular business briefing opportunities that support Bechtel outreach opportunities and allow us to develop relationships and seek joint opportunities with EIC members.

A recent example of the EIC assisting Bechtel’s material and equipment sourcing objectives is from a US-based project funded by UKEF. The EIC polled its membership to facilitate the project’s UK content requirements. While the project did not move forward, the EIC assisted in identifying over 500 suppliers that could contribute to this objective, providing the project the opportunity to meet UKEF requirements.

Innovative tools developed by the EIC (such as EICDataStream) increase the amount of project opportunities exposed to EIC membership and facilitate contact with major EPC companies like Bechtel. Like the EIC, Bechtel is active in energy transition projects both in the UK and globally. As the world continues to seek efficient ways to transition to alternative energy sources, Bechtel seeks to provide our customers with innovative solutions that contribute to a clean energy future, while promoting sustainable supply chain practices. Similar to the EIC, Bechtel works closely with our customers to understand their evolving needs for identifying, tracking and reporting their progress towards meeting their greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction targets.

What are the synergies between your company and the EIC?

Bechtel celebrates its 125th anniversary this year and recently celebrated our presence of 70 years in the UK. The EIC’s industry involvement over the past 80 years has afforded us, and EIC membership, the opportunity to work together on many noteworthy international projects in the UK, US, Europe, the Middle East and Africa for various customers.

We have always valued our relationship. The EIC has enabled us to remain current on industry trends and helped foster our relationships with other members. Where would you like to see your company and the EIC in the next 80 years?

Firstly, we would like the relationship between our organisations to continue to flourish and be prosperous for each other. Bechtel’s global and cross-industry portfolio will continue to open opportunities for EIC membership. In return, Bechtel will continue to grow from EIC’s insight of industry dynamics and trends.

As the EIC expands globally, more opportunities will be available for our organisations. In fact, the EIC is already active in many of the same regions where Bechtel has principal offices and multiple projects, including the UK, Europe, North & South America, Asia and Australia. We look forward to seeking and nurturing further opportunities for our customers and the supply chain with the support of the EIC.

About Bechtel

Since 1898, Bechtel has helped customers complete more than 25,000 projects in 160 countries on all seven continents. Bechtel has a diverse portfolio that works on projects in the energy, infrastructure, power, telecommunications, mining and metals, manufacturing and technology, and government services sectors.

ONE-TO-ONE

How has the EIC helped you through the years? Any interesting stories to tell?

Since Edward Gunn was formed in the UK in July 2020, the executive recruitment company has conducted a candidate selection process via a unique approach utilising a panel of industry and disciplinespecific experts. In September 2021 Edward Gunn established an operation in Houston, Texas, in order to better serve the energy market. A key part of this expansion strategy was to tap into the suite of market intelligence databases plus the network and connections afforded by EIC membership. Since joining, Edward Gunn has expanded well beyond its initial sales and marketing domain into a number of sectors such as energy and fintech.

Chris Cottam, President North America, leads Edward Gunn’s energy practice in Houston. In 2022 he was appointed to the EIC’s Advisory Board for North and Central America, further strengthening the ties between the company and the EIC. Having been an EIC member some 15 years ago with another company, Chris often comments on how much more value the EIC brings to its 2023 members, including the increased significance of the available market intelligence, the increasing number of global events each year and the professionalism and talent of the staff.

What are the synergies between Edward Gunn and the EIC?

All EIC member companies need leadership talent to be successful, and finding such talent in the energy industry is becoming more difficult as each year passes. Prime drivers for this are demographic changes such as the ‘great energy crew change’ and those related to energy transition.

In fact, in a recent EIC membership poll, 47% of respondents identified ‘people/skills shortage’ as their number one growth challenge in 2023 – nearly twice as many as the second nearest challenge! Edward Gunn is uniquely positioned to help members overcome this challenge and looks forward to working closely with the EIC in this regard.

Synergistically, Edward Gunn and the EIC are in the same business. That is: leveraging a wide network of companies and experts to improve collective business outcomes. In the case of the EIC, this is the membership, for Edward Gunn it’s their panellists who provide the leverage for superior talent acquisition.

Where would you like to see Edward Gunn and the EIC in the next 80 years?

Edward Gunn’s panellists have working experience in 45 countries around the world, the vast majority of which relate to experience in the energy industry. The EIC continues to expand its footprint across the major energy markets of the world and Edward Gunn looks forward to continuing to be a partner of significance throughout this expansion in the decades to come.

Edward Gunn is a panel selection firm. The company’s hiring panel, with leadership experience spanning more than 500 years and 45 countries, is uniquely placed to research, evaluate and select the best talent for senior and strategic appointments. With a firm focus on empathy, the company fully understands the hiring rationale of its clients and gains an appreciation of the niche hiring needs of every business. The company places client stability and growth at the forefront of the selection process, taking the time to ensure that both the candidate and client are perfectly aligned in all aspects of their future working lives.

How has the EIC helped you through the years? Any interesting stories to tell?

HFI was established in the UAE in 2003, just one year prior to the establishment of the EIC Middle East office, so our business has effectively grown up in the region alongside EIC’s growth, first with Terry Willis as regional director and subsequently with Ryan McPherson. Our founder and managing partner, Hugh Fraser, shares a common legacy with EIC CEO Stuart Broadley as senior members of the Wood Group management team which worked towards the successful flotation of the Group in 2001.

The EICDataStream projects database and market updates are our go-to places for market intelligence and the EIC conference pavilions have given us a much-valued basecamp at major energy events and connectivity with fellow delegates and exhibitors. The recent GCC market updates have underlined to HFI the importance of the MENA region with over US$600bn of energy projects being tracked through EICDataStream.

EIC-led conferences have allowed us to project well above our weight into key market places, initially at the likes of Offshore Europe and OTC and laterally at ADIPEC and WindEurope. We have been a keen supporter of and participator in the EIC CONNECT events and sincerely hope these will continue to be rolled out to a wider range of territories.

What are the synergies between HFI and the EIC?

As with EIC, HFI is exclusively focused on energy and specifically energy technologies being expanded in the MENA region. Many EIC members are HFI clients and we have been privileged to act as legal advisors to EIC in the Middle East region.

Our clients are principally private equity-backed companies driving the energy transition and we are recognised as a trusted, market-leading boutique practice with a proven track record of over 20 years of driving international ventures. Our membership of EIC has played no small part in allowing us to establish that position in the marketplace.

Where would you like to see HFI and the EIC in the next 80 years?

Looking forward to 2103, we hope that my and Ryan’s successors will be enjoying the fruits of a successful energy transition which both organisations have played their own in seeking to achieve, where the world is powered and driven by hydrogen, floating offshore wind, solar with storage and perhaps even fusion.

About HFI

HFI is a specialist professional services firm led by Hugh Fraser, a Scottish corporate/energy lawyer and member of the Scottish Development International GlobalScot international trade ambassador network.

HFI supports clients to establish, expand and divest their international businesses through strategic, value-added consulting and legal services, combining specialist know-how, connections, local partners and execution expertise.

Its focus is on ventures which combine advanced energy technology and know-how with opportunities in the key territories of the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Egypt and India including new incountry businesses, joint ventures and acquisitions.

EIC INSIDE ENERGY 8

ONE-TO-ONE

How has the EIC helped you through the years? Any interesting stories to tell?

The EIC has made a tremendous impact on my professional path and the informed decisions I make regularly. There is nothing else out there like the EIC, and its access to the latest updates, insights and trends in the energy industry is invaluable. The organisation has shaped the way many professionals in the industry do business. By knowing where the industry is heading and what type of clients we should be looking at, HKA can better strategise on how we do work, the types of clients we partner with, and the type of advisory services we deliver. The EIC is the gatekeeper to key networking opportunities and has allowed me to build relationships, make the right connections, and have meaningful conversations with the right people through their introductions. As a board member, I have gained more insight into the EIC’s mission and how it operates. I have made endless new connections with the right people from the right companies, enabling a mutual coalition for helping each other out with decisions and more.

What are the synergies between HKA Global and the EIC?

HKA Global and the EIC have a mutual interest in the energy industry as well as a mutual desire to identify and develop global business opportunities within this sector. Both organisations strive to help people and companies. The EIC does this by promoting the industry through trends, market analysis and data and by educating the community on what is happening with energy projects around the world. HKA’s claims advisory and dispute resolution experts advise clients on the latest trends that impact their business and educate them on what kinds of claims and disputes can arise from their projects. The EIC and HKA similarly offer their members and clients a wealth of professional knowledge and expertise, share industry best practices, and provide practical advice.

Where would you like to see HKA Global and the EIC in the next 80 years?

In the next 80 years, I would like to see HKA and the EIC working closer together, collaborating more frequently on the latest insights and using our combined expertise across the energy, renewables and hydrogen sectors and sharing this knowledge with the industry through thought-provoking energyrelated sector events and webinars.

HKA will continue to rely on the EIC and its resources, as a leader in the industry, for its in-depth research and data to enhance and steer our energy, renewables and hydrogen sector growth plans worldwide through our global membership.

I envision HKA and the EIC working together throughout the global footprint. We both operate worldwide, and I would like to see each HKA location partner with each EIC location around the world.

About HKA Global

HKA is one of the world’s leading providers of consulting, expert and advisory services for the construction and engineering industry and in the resources sector. HKA employs more than 1,000 professionals operating in 40+ offices in 18 countries worldwide. Its track record spans pioneering developments and many highprofile projects. It works with owners and employers, contractors, specialist subcontractors and law firms, applying the company’s knowledge and unrivalled expertise to achieve the best outcomes possible for clients. HKA’s global portfolio includes some of the world’s largest and most prestigious projects across a wide range of market sectors, including energy, buildings, industrial facilities, infrastructure, oil and gas, power and utilities and technology.

How has the EIC helped you through the years?

Any interesting stories to tell?

The EIC has been a valuable resource for us throughout the years. One of the key benefits we have found is EICDataStream, which serves as a go-to CAPEX database of industry projects in all phases of development. This has been an invaluable tool for staying up-to-date on the latest industry developments and identifying new business opportunities. Paula Fitzpatrick is a proud member of the Regional Advisory Board (Houston), which has allowed the opportunity to learn from others and provide input on key industry issues. We have also found the presentations and introductions provided by the EIC to be both interesting and relevant, keeping us informed on the latest trends and best practices in the industry. Furthermore, the EIC has been sincerely invested in making connections to help further the growth and success of the industry and has been a valuable asset to us in our professional careers and to organisations like Kent.

What are the synergies between Kent and the EIC?

The synergies between Kent and the EIC are many and varied. One of the most notable is the fact that Kent was awarded the 2022 EIC Culture Award – this is a testament to the strong alignment between our values and those of the EIC.

Kent and the EIC both share a global perspective and footprint. With a geographic footprint that extends around the world, we are able to understand the nuances and complexities of different markets, and to develop strategies that are tailored to the unique needs of each region. The data and news that EIC shares allows us to stay ahead of trends and to make strategic decisions that will help us to sustain and grow our business. Where would you like to see your company and the EIC in the next 80 years?

Kent will be watching where EIC goes – it is always ahead of its time regarding industry and market trends. We are proud to be a member of the EIC and look forward to working together to shape the future of the energy industry.

About Kent

Kent designs, builds and maintains the assets that power the world for today and make it future-ready for tomorrow. The future of energy markets is going to look remarkably different than it did over those last eight decades; exciting times ahead indeed!

Our company, Myrcator, has been a positive beacon of success since its formation. We will need to maintain this trajectory if we want to stay competitive and relevant within our industry over the next ten years.

The oil and gas and marine sectors face a crucial challenge of developing professionals and overcoming an ongoing skills gap that remains unresolved stepping into the future. Skills shortages are going to affect us all. It is up to us, now more than ever before, to rise and conquer these challenges; ensuring that the likes of Myrcator leaves their legacy far into an even brighter future.

About Myrcator

How has the EIC helped you through the years? Any interesting stories to tell?

Through my formative years in the oil and gas industry, the EIC was a critical vehicle to globalising my career. Firstly, desk-based activities using the EICDataStream tools gave me access and understanding to information about projects all over the world, but it wasn’t long before I attended an EIC trade mission to Perth, Australia and was regularly utilising its office facilities in Houston.

The EIC also gave low entry costs to expand business activities into the Middle East with EIC CONNECT events and then global events such as OTC.

What are the synergies between PetrolValves and the EIC?

Definitely the globalisation of the EIC overlapping with all of our key regions and continued focus on energy projects globally.

Where would you like to see PetrolValves and the EIC in the next 80 years?

PetrolValves continues to develop industry leading technology for conventional energy projects as well as new applications suitable for the energy transition. While we’ve even begun development of products for space exploration –who is to say the boundaries of the EIC will not also transcend beyond our current world…

About PetrolValves

PetrolValves is a leading flow solutions provider for the energy industry, specialising and pursuing product excellence in the engineering of valves, actuators and systems through advanced technology and delivering high quality services. Its strength comes from the ability to design outstanding solutions and offer services in an efficient way and with the highest standards of reliability.

How has the EIC helped you through the years? Any interesting stories to tell?

Roxtec Global has been a member of the EIC for several years, and I was fortunate to join different office events within the Americas region. In my early career stages, I remember having networking events with the Brazilian office, where several members of the UK oil and gas market were networking with local companies in search of possible business synergies. The EIC has always been a place for quality networking, business development and knowledge sharing. As I developed my oil and gas career, I have always relied on the EIC platform to connect with industry peers, prospects and partners. Throughout the years, the EIC has consistently supported my organisational objectives by providing relevant market intelligence or enhancing our business development capabilities through a well-structured networking framework. I remember when I joined the US organisation, moving from Rio de Janeiro to Houston, and the first place I went was the EIC office in Houston. I knew that having access to their qualified members would allow me to engage with high-level decision-makers within specific target prospects and start my new assignment with more confidence. Right after joining the Houston office, I was invited to take a seat on the Advisory Board for the US region, and I am really grateful for the invitation.

What are the synergies between Roxtec and the EIC?

Roxtec is a worldwide leader in cable and pipe sealing systems, with a diverse portfolio and huge potential for growth. Due to the disruptive characteristics of our solutions, we primarily establish our value proposition through a structured account-based focus. The vast majority of our largest target accounts are related to the EIC, and the different offices provide extensive support for business development, either through one-to-one introductions or very focused events.

Our go-to-market approach has a strong synergy with the EIC business model, so our relationship has been symbiotic since we started our engagement.

Where would you like to see Roxtec and the EIC in the next 80 years?

Our ambition is to maintain our sustainable growth pattern, but we would only be able to reach our goals with the support of strong partnerships in the marketplace. Roxtec has a diversified business portfolio, ranging from oil and gas to power generation, passing through renewables and T&D. The major energy transition happening right now will change how our energy matrix is structured. The EIC is evolving with this trend. If you consider the energy market 80 years from now, we expect to see multiple energy sources, which increases complexity and interactions between stakeholders. The EIC is embracing change to support the transition, and we will continue to consider the EIC as part of our strategic platforms for business development.

About Roxtec

Roxtec develops, manufactures and delivers flexible sealing solutions for cable and pipe penetrations. Roxtec modular-based transits are used for cable sealing and pipe sealing in numerous demanding industries and projects worldwide as the seals provide certified protection against multiple risks, including fire, gas and water. The Roxtec invention for adaptability, Multidiameter™, is based on sealing modules with removable rubber layers and allows for a perfect sealing, regardless of the outside dimension of the cable or pipe.

How has the EIC helped you through the years? Any interesting stories to tell?

I was introduced to the EIC as I arrived in the middle east ten years ago. I always valued the market information as it helped me accelerate my understanding of the GCC and the events allowed me to build up my personal network in the region.

However, it wasn’t until we launched Tyde Digital that I fully appreciated the value of what they offer. From the initial support to join the community, through to invitations to participate in roundtable discussions and pillar events such as ADIPEC, the team has really helped our exposure in the early phases of our business journey.

What are the synergies between Tyde Digital and the EIC?

We are both very data centric businesses who equally focus on the value it generates for people. At Tyde Digital we take a partnership approach to everything we do and it’s clear by the ever growing EIC community that they do the same. Both companies also look to provide customers with information at their fingertips, empowering them to capitalise on those magic moments in front of new potential clients or key internal stakeholders.

We are looking forward to collaborating much more in the future.

ONE-TO-ONE 80

Where would you like to see Tyde Digital and the EIC in the next 80 years?

I’d like to think both businesses would maintain a people first approach and help the companies they work with to achieve success.

It’s of course difficult to say where technology will be in 80 years, but I expect both companies will continue to take a human centric approach to adoption, ensuring its leveraged to help businesses unlock their full potential.

About Tyde

EIC INSIDE ENERGY 14

ONE-TO-ONE

How has the EIC helped you through the years? Any interesting stories to tell?

Vysus Group has utilised the market data provided by EICDataStream and the information generated by the advisory board for many years. As a global leader in energy consultancy, we have strived for the ability to anticipate our existing and potential clients’ needs in the global marketplace. The data provided by EIC has been instrumental in identifying the most valuable trends and regions to focus on following Vysus Group’s move to North American renewable and grid operations. Being included as part of the EIC energy and the offshore wind advisory boards has been a great personal honour for me. As an American, being a part of the burgeoning offshore wind industry here in the US in its growth period and lending a single voice to the symphony of other industry leaders here on the board has proven to be an enriching experience in my career. What are the synergies between your company and the EIC?

As the concept of what makes up energy evolves as we globally transition toward a carbon neutral future, I feel having broad industry input is essential to guide and grow the technologies and methods that drive that transition to sustainable sources of energy that don’t adversely impact our climate.

Where would you like to see Vysus Group and the EIC in the next 80 years?

In a carbon neutral industry. To be more specific I would like to see by 80 years’ time a world not impacted by global climate struggles like we see today. I would like that world to encompass what are today’s developing countries and include all global stakeholders in that equation. Yes, I understand that isn’t specific to my company or EIC in general, but as our two organisations are on that path together now, I would hope we are part of those solutions that bring about that future.

Abyss Solutions announces Aberdeen as its new European hub

Abyss Solutions has announced Aberdeen as its new European hub creating up to 30 jobs. The global firm recently moved into its new office at Neospace in the city’s Riverside Drive.

Founded by four scientists and engineers from the University of Sydney in 2014, Abyss Solutions uses machine learning and robotics to inspect assets and detect anomalies such as corrosion for critical infrastructure across land, sea, air and space.

We strategically selected this location due to the proximity of the UK North Sea, Norwegian and Dutch waters, and the multitude of engineering experience that exists here.

AIS has announced the successful award from two major EPCs for subsea thermal insulation on Christmas trees, connectors and PLETs for a major development in Angola.

Martin Shaw has joined the Alderley Group as chief financial officer (CFO) where he will oversee the financial operations of the three Alderley Group companies –Alderley, Kelton and Specialised Management Services (SMS).

Martin’s appointment is a key pillar of Alderley’s growth strategy as an energy sector solutions provider with a growing and successful operational footprint in the UK, Middle East and India.

Martin will form a key part of an experienced executive team headed by CEO, Colin Elcoate, and a senior board consisting of Chair Alan Wilson, and directors Philippa Slatter and Lucinda Rose.

head of region Europe and Africa, Abyss Solutions

It currently has offices in Australia, Brazil, Pakistan and USA, but said it had chosen to open in the Granite City due to the ‘experience and talent pool’ available in the northeast. The company said it hopes to hire between 20 to 30 people during the next two years.

The firm’s expansion has been made possible after a recent investment of £12.1m (US$15m) in new venture capital funding from AirTree, an early investor in breakout tech companies, to help drive the organisation’s regional strategies.

Amarinth wins further order from VWS Westgarth for titanium API 610 OH2 pumps

Amarinth, a world-leading, net-zero designer and manufacturer of low lifecycle cost centrifugal pumps and associated equipment, primarily for the offshore and onshore oil and gas industries; nuclear and renewable energy generation; defence; desalination; process and industrial markets, has won a further order from VWS Westgarth for two titanium API 610 OH2 pumps for use aboard the FPSO One Guyana which is destined for the Yellowtail development project, Guyana.

The Yellowtail development project comprises of six drill centres and up to 26 production and 25 injection wells. Located 200km offshore Guyana, the deepwater wells will be tied back to the One Guyana FPSO vessel for processing.

The One Guyana FPSO will perform produced water treatment functions as well as oil separation and gas injection. It will have an optimum production capacity of 250,000 barrels per day (bpd) of oil and a storage capacity of two million barrels of crude oil, gas treatment capacity of 450m ft 3 a day, and water injection capacity of 300,000 bpd.

VWS Westgarth approached

Amarinth for the two titanium API 610 OH2 chemically enhanced backwash pumps following the successful delivery of similar pumps to the company by Amarinth for two FPSO vessels operating off Brazil.

To handle the highly corrosive fluid, all wetted parts of the pumps will be manufactured in titanium, including the casings, impellers and shafts. Titanium is a difficult material to work with and must be cast under a full vacuum using copper crucibles to prevent the molten titanium attacking the crucible walls. The UK has one of only a few foundries in the world with the capability to cast the large titanium components necessary for the pumps. In addition, Amarinth has a strong relationship with its supply chain enabling it to procure hard to source titanium components.

The API 610 OH2 pumps will be ATEX Zone 2 certified for hazardous areas with IECEx certified motors. With very limited space within the FPSO vessel, the design includes a bespoke baseplate that incorporates a local control station within its footprint. The pumps will be supplied on a tight 38 week lead time, which is necessary to fit the FPSO build in China and combines the new build, multi-purpose hull with several standardised topsides modules.

Balmoral’s Montrose facility on track for giant composite structures

Aberdeen-based Balmoral Comtec has completed the installation of its manufacturing plant at its new advanced composites facility at Montrose Port.

The company invested a sevenfigure sum in the 18,299 sq ft (1,700 sq m) quayside facility where large scale composite components such as subsea and wellhead protection, wave energy structures and manifold covers for the offshore energy sector will be built.

The investment in these premises will help the leading north-east business service the offshore industries more effectively as it strengthens its commitment to the wind, wave and tidal energy sectors.

Founded in 1980 by chairman and managing director Sir Jim Milne CBE, Balmoral already provides protection products (fatigue, impact and abrasion), buoyancy (mooring and cable) and tethering solutions (clamps) to the offshore wind sector. The new manufacturing site at the Port of Montrose will allow the company to deliver its large advanced composite products direct from shore to ship as the sector expands in the waters off the coast of Scotland and further afield.

Having an established reputation for supporting the general cargo and oil and gas industries, Montrose Port supports 400 jobs worth £15m to the regional economy. The Port is actively involved in the renewables sector with the operations and maintenance base for Seagreen now operational as its field seeks to start commercial operations in early 2023. Construction for the Inch Cape wind farm operations and maintenance base will begin at Montrose in 2023. Balmoral Comtec is a division of Balmoral Group which was established in 1980 and has built an enviable reputation in the design, development and delivery of buoyancy, protection and insulation products for the global offshore energy sector.

As an independent company, headquartered in Aberdeen, Balmoral has over 500 people based at its facility in the city and a global presence spanning Europe, North America, South America and Asia Pacific. Group-wide, the company employs 750+ people.

Energy leaders met at the end of last year to discuss corrective action to achieve climate targets, as DNV, the independent energy expert and assurance provider, launched its UK Energy Transition Outlook (ETO), revealing that the country is not on track to meet mid-century decarbonisation targets and that the industry and government must mobilise a clear roadmap to attain net zero by 2050.

Over 150 leaders from energy majors, government, representatives from the investment community and representative bodies, attended the launch of the first UK ETO by DNV in London. The report forecasts that while the energy landscape in the UK will continue to shift from fossil fuels, with almost half of the country’s energy demand being delivered by electricity in 2050, this will not be enough to meet the 100% reduction in emissions, legislated for in 2019. The UK will also not meet its nationally determined contribution (NDC) commitment of reducing emissions by 68% by 2030.

A panel consisting of Shirley Oliveira, vice president hydrogen and CCUS advisory services at bp; Laurence Fumagalli, head of UK wind fund, Schroders Greencoat; Dr David Joffe, head of net zero at the Climate Change Committee; Viken Chinien, head of department, enterprise risk management, energy systems at DNV; and Nicola Harris, head of energy, UK and Lloyd’s at AXA XL, discussed how the country can meet its low-carbon objectives.

While the UK has made progress to reduce carbon emissions, the government’s absence of a committed roadmap and relevant business models to deliver on those ambitions is stalling the implementation needed to reduce emissions to the point where net zero goals can be achieved.

In positive news for domestic consumers, household energy expenditure is expected to halve, driven by increased electrification of household heating and passenger transport, however DNV’s report highlights that the transport and building sectors are the major remaining contributors to the total annual emissions by 2050.

Building emissions could be eliminated through a combination of boosting heat pump penetration in up to 20m households and decarbonising the remainder by substituting natural gas with green hydrogen. Investment in underground hydrogen storage is essential in supporting the switch to green hydrogen and to take advantage of low-cost renewables. Almost half of the UK’s energy demand will be delivered by electricity by 2050. Demand seasonality and variability in renewable sources require a smart and flexible system with investment in power grid infrastructure, as well as automation and analytics. Magnetrol: multiphase detector installed on desalter

A Genesis™ multiphase detector with a 106 inch long Pentarod probe was installed on a 13 foot diameter desalter at a refinery in the eastern United States for monitoring and comparison against an existing Fisher torque tube displacer transmitter. Desalters are an important process element at refineries as desalting removes both salt and residual free water. The goal in this application is to keep the interface level constant for optimum efficiency. The challenge is that interface level must be accurate enough to control and keep free water from contacting the desalter electrodes, which can cause expensive damage.

Commissioning was confirmed via comparison to visual samples taken from side taps with indications showing a torque tube error of up to 20%.

There were immediate results, but over time, an even greater return may be seen in terms of reduced corrosion and fouling in downstream piping/equipment due to tighter control of the emulsion. In addition, level control was improved from 15-20% around the setpoint with the displacer down to 1-2% with the Genesis. They have benefited by this improved control in both time (with respect to maintenance) and money (with respect to chemical additives).

27% reduction helps NRL renew carbon neutral international standard

The NRL Group is celebrating renewing its carbon neutral certification for a second year with a 27% reduction in its carbon footprint. Which sees its footprint per employee reduced by 0.84 tonnes. The independently verified assessment is undertaken each year by One Carbon World and meets the green house gas (GHG) protocol corporate standard. Reporting includes a reduction in scope 1 emissions of more than 77,443 CO 2 e, which measures direct greenhouse emissions such as fuel used in the transportation of goods and services. As well as a reduction in scope 3 emissions of 15,895 CO 2 e, which includes indirect emissions such as business travel and waste disposal.

Maintaining the carbon neutral international standard is just one way we’re demonstrating to our clients and candidates that we’re passionate about making long-lasting change.

The renewal success follows a continuous focus within the NRL Group to identify ways to reduce and eliminate carbon emissions across its engineering operations – which include recruitment, non-destructive testing to the civil nuclear industry and rail maintenance contracting. Areas of focus included energy, fuel, water, commuting and business travel.

Siemens Energy: first tests for HYFLEXPOWER demonstrator successfully completed

Siemens Energy, ENGIE Solutions, Centrax, Arttic, the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and four European universities, together forming the HYFLEXPOWER consortium, have announced the successful completion of the first stage of an innovative research project on renewable energy. Located at the Smurfit Kappa Saillat paper mill in Saillat-sur-Vienne, France, this programme becomes the first industrial facility in the world to introduce an integrated hydrogen demonstrator.

The aim of the HYFLEXPOWER project is to demonstrate that green hydrogen can serve as a flexible means of storing energy which can then be used to power an industrial turbine. The hydrogen is produced on site with an electrolyser and used in a gas turbine with a mix of 30 volume % hydrogen and 70 volume % natural gas for power generation.

The project marks the implementation of the world’s first industrial-scale power-to-X-to-power demonstration with an advanced turbine with high hydrogen content fuel. In 2023, trials will continue to increase the hydrogen ratio up to 100%.

The members of the consortium are focused on looking beyond 2030 and trialing new technology, such as hydrogen, today. This project will allow the partners to understand the technical feasibility of using hydrogen while retaining much of the existing energy infrastructure. This highly innovative project involves significant collaboration across several industries, academic bodies and research institutes. The project was inspired by the European Commission’s (EC) Hydrogen Strategy for a ClimateNeutral Europe report, which outlines the essential role that hydrogen will play within the European Green Deal carbon neutrality and energy transition initiative.

The stakeholders involved in the project are Siemens Energy, ENGIE Solutions, Centrax, ARTTIC, German Aerospace Center (DLR), and universities NTUA Athens (Greece), Lund (Sweden), Duisburg-Essen (Germany) and UCL (UK).

The project, first announced in 2020, involves significant funding by the European Commission, with two-thirds of the €15.2m investment coming from the EU’s Horizon 2020 Framework Programme for Research and Innovation. The next trials for the HYFLEXPOWER project are scheduled for summer 2023.

In the current challenging supply chain landscape, ensuring the transit of critical parts is vital for companies like Proserv to maintain a seamless flow of products and services in support of its clients around the world.

Unprecedented global disruption experienced over recent years is making the supply chain a more difficult environment in which to navigate, from natural disasters, such as earthquakes and violent storms, and the first pandemic in a century through to a myriad of geopolitical effects such as Brexit and the outbreak of war in Ukraine on the margins of Europe.

In the past two years, supply chains have been disturbed by cyber-attacks on energy pipelines in the eastern US and container vessels running aground in Egypt – volatility can come in many shapes and sizes.

Widespread effects

But let us remember, it is not only at work where we see these impacts. In our daily lives, we will have experienced some form of supply chain turbulence, be that through post and packaging delays or empty shelves in supermarkets. Anyone who has tried to buy a new car over the last 18 months will have experienced delays due to a worldwide scarcity of microchips and semi-conductors.

The breakdown in the expected supply of materials has resulted in shortages of core parts and components. When it can take several months for certain exotic materials to arrive during normal times, imagine the consequences for a supply chain under repeated strain.

The energy crisis, driven by the RussiaUkraine war, has recently pushed inflation to record highs; global prices have spiked, and the resultant fallout has seen an increase in industrial action across both the private and public sectors in the UK. The subsequent impact on families and firms is considerable and is bringing serious economic and social upheaval.

Such events have highlighted the importance of maintaining supply and engaging robust risk management and mitigation policies to protect business. Here at Proserv, we have adapted to this changing environment by deploying multiple approaches and actions. These can be broken down across four key areas: strategy, communication, engagement and resilience.

Strategy

The development of a clearly defined strategy throughout the company, alongside long-term planning, has been imperative as the disruption being experienced is unprecedented. At Proserv, ‘Security of Supply’ is now embedded within our supply chain procedures as a businesscritical initiative.

Proactive risk identification around vital supplied parts has been conducted to determine what steps are then required: for example, forward ordering, increased levels of stock holding, supplier stocking agreements, supplier led-solutions or even new supplier development are different tools being employed to alleviate any risk. No one solution fits all, and the flexibility of Proserv’s supply chain has been pivotal, but dynamic action has been required.

At the outset, it is essential to effectively communicate across all departments the seriousness of the global supply chain challenges being faced.

Deploying a 360-degree communications philosophy is needed to fully connect with both internal and external stakeholders. Regular engagement and interaction on realworld activities and trends equates to ‘Human Intelligence’, and this represents primary information for use and analysis. The supply chain function acts as a key conduit facing suppliers and vendors. Ensuring this process is a seamless two-way pivot allows organisations to harness information for maximum benefit and accurate decision-making.

It is vital that senior leaders are kept aware, as additional support above and beyond the norm may be required in exceptional times. At Proserv, our senior leadership team and Board of Directors understand the challenges being faced and have provided tremendous assistance. Such executive buy-in makes dealing with difficult supply scenarios much easier for any company.

Proserv’s supply chain team regularly shares any notable disruption being encountered across the business to increase awareness of the external landscape. Utilising internal intranet platforms allows for effective and swift communication of issues and a helpful exchange of experiences.

Meanwhile, regular updates are provided on plans, actions and progress via monthly reports to internal stakeholders.

Security of Supply: navigating choppy waters with Chris Denton, Director, Supply Chain, Proserv Advocating a joined-up and forward-thinking method for overcoming the complexities of today’s volatile world

Engagement

The need for supply chain teams to be hardwired into an organisation’s sales and operations planning (S&OP) process has never been so important. Early engagement with customers, through sales and into S&OP, is crucial for the communication of the impacts being seen externally: be that lead-time extensions, material grade/component shortages or capacity constraints. Providing that intelligence is a crucial supply chain task. Conversely, being able to make early sourcing decisions to mitigate potential shortfalls is a key strategy for maintaining integrity of supply.

As a technology company, Proserv’s engineering function is front and centre in leading innovation, change and in supporting our customers’ requirements. A supply chain team must drive engagement with engineering to fuse technical and commercial harmony to deliver in a real-world environment. So, it is essential to explore technical opportunities to harness modular or standardised solutions, with supplier involvement and input as needed, and to consider supply sources which are more readily available.

Ongoing supplier engagement, such as sharing forecast intelligence, available capacity and regular communications, plus an increased understanding of our Tier 1 suppliers’ own supply chain issues, better enables Proserv to react to shortages and challenges in the market quickly. Proserv also regularly holds supplier engagement events across our various locations to encourage direct interaction and these are great vehicles not only to maintain relationships but to understand the wider business landscape.

Resilience

Global disruption is a continual obstacle for organisations to deal with, so they need to build resilience into their supply chain teams when dealing with these situations on a daily basis over a period of years. The regularity of complexities can sometimes seem overwhelming, but supply chain colleagues need to be determined and keep working the problem.

It is important to know that small improvements constitute tangible progress. Perseverance is fundamental and supply chain leaders must be cognisant that more work is currently required than previously to guarantee products are delivered and to ensure supply is secured.

Dynamic and connected

The supply chain environment remains uncertain and it may never return to pre pandemic levels of relative stability. Companies like Proserv must remain focused on confirming ‘Security of Supply’ strategies and dynamic internal and external communications are deployed, to support present and future business growth opportunities.

That means a globally connected supply chain team closely entwined with key upstream functions such as sales and engineering. That means collaborating closely with core suppliers on forecasting and capacity planning.

Guided by regular market insights and feedback and a flexible, adaptable approach, organisations will be much better equipped to navigate choppy waters to safeguard the aims and activities of all stakeholders.

Wind Expo Japan & Wind Energy Asia

In the world of offshore wind energy in the APAC region, Japan and Taiwan are the markets to keep an eye on. The development of 30 to 45GW projects and an increase in local procurement by 2040 are the goals set forth in the Offshore Wind Industry Vision for Japan. Over the past few months, Japan’s goals to deploy up to 10GW of offshore wind power by 2030 have advanced quickly, in part due to faster measures to rectify a supply and demand imbalance.

In accordance with the plan outlined in its Net-Zero Emissions report published in early 2022, Taiwan has adopted important goals for offshore wind. By 2050, the island should generate at least 60% of its total energy from renewable sources. Additionally, it sets a goal of 40GW of wind generating capacity by 2050, with 20MW expected to be operational by 2035. The government intends to build 450 onshore wind turbines and 600 offshore wind turbines by 2030, with a total capacity of 4,200MW, of which 1,200MW will be for onshore and 3,000MW will be for offshore.

With this in mind the EIC’s international trade team is proud to be showcasing the UK capabilities at Wind Expo Japan in Tokyo and Wind Energy Asia in Kaohsiung, both taking place in March 2023.

Wind Expo Japan

The EIC is going to host the UK pavilion and trade mission to Wind Expo Japan in partnership with the Department for International Trade. We are proud to represent a group of thirteen companies from all over the country.

On 7 March, a webinar panel discussion will be hosted by DIT in order to promote the UK group to Japanese buyers in advance of the show and networking reception. Please do get in touch with the team if you wish to tune into the latest hot topics in this thriving industry.

We are then returning to Japan for a full week of in-person activities for the first time since 2020. Commencing with an ice-breaker event at the British Embassy in Tokyo, followed by the mission briefing. We will discuss the current offshore wind market in Japan, and how UK companies are involved by showcasing the companies that have been successful in this market.

We will be exhibiting at the show between 15 and 17 March. The UK pavilion is located just in front of the main entrance, so it will not be difficult to find us. We are gearing up for the busiest Wind Expo Japan to date, and are looking forward to welcoming Japanese visitors to our lounge.

The EIC’s energy analyst, Madana Leela will provide an Offshore Wind APAC Outlook presentation on Thursday 16 March at 10:30 in the offshore wind presentation area. Please make sure to stop by if you are visiting.

Wind Energy Asia

Our team has been following this show closely for some years, but the recent pandemic deemed our earlier plans of exhibiting impossible. We are now very excited to be hosting our first UK pavilion at WEA this year. It’s been a long time coming.

We are proud to be taking a group of six companies to the show with plans to grow our pavilion in the coming years. We will be launching the EIC zone at WEA in 2024, and we hope to involve EIC’s APAC region members in the future.

For 2023, we will be hosting a networking drinks reception at the UK pavilion lounge where we plan to introduce VIP buyers and host VIP pavilion tours. For more information on both of these events please contact natalia.bawolska@the-eic.com

Solar power will account for two-thirds of US capacity

According to data released by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), solar power will represent 66% of US projects between December 2022 and November 2025. While natural gas, nuclear power and coal will see more project withdrawals than additions, solar energy could double its total available installed capacity from the current 78GW to 152GW. Wind and hydropower will also experience substantial growth. If FERC’s forecast becomes reality, over 32% of the country’s generating capacity will come from renewables.

IRA to spur growth in supply chain annual investment

The Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) might induce investments in the US renewable energy market to grow annually from US$64bn to US$114bn by 2031, says a Wood Mackenzie report. While the onshore and offshore wind segment might benefit from the policy, domestic solar PV manufacturers are unlikely to meet the country’s required equipment demand on their own.

Join us at the upcoming Breakfast in Rio series on 23 March: Offshore Services – OPEX and ABEX Opportunities with Ocyan. A local player with key Petrobras contracts, Ocyan specialises in providing solutions for the upstream offshore oil and gas industry in Brazil and abroad. The company’s fleet comprises of five drilling units and two FPSO (floating, production, storage and offloading) vessels. Ocyan also develops SURF projects, manufactures and installs subsea equipment, and provides offshore maintenance services.

The year began with another successful EIC Breakfast in Rio. Earlier in January we had the opportunity to receive Origem Energia – a newly formed Brazilian operator with five years’ expertise – to speak about Onshore and Nearshore Opportunities in the E&P Sector. Gabriel Camargo, supply chain manager, delivered a presentation on Origem’s asset portfolio, which includes two important energy hubs in the Brazilian northeast. Tucano Sul is a self-sufficient and fully integrated hub with four exploration blocks, four producing fields, 91km of pipelines and 45 wells.

Brazil’s 2023 growth to be spearheaded by solar and wind

Brazil’s Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) has reported that 2023 will see the country’s utility-scale installed capacity grow by 10.3GW, with over 90% driven by solar and wind developments. The states of Bahia, Rio Grande do Norte and Minas Gerais will jointly bring about the installation of 7.5GW, strongly representing how the solar PV and onshore wind sectors have become indispensable in Brazil’s ongoing effort to diversify its hydro-dependent power matrix. MME stated the expected increase, if indeed executed, would represent the single largest annual increment to the Brazilian grid ever since monitoring began back in 1997.

The company also owns the Alagoas hub which has 270km of pipelines and seven fields. During the presentation the speaker highlighted opportunities for suppliers in small-scale LNG, E&P, engineering, construction and assembly projects. We are looking forward to organising our second trade delegation to Guyana on 18-21 April. Delegates will be able to meet major players in the oil and gas market and have access to key networking opportunities. Book your place by emailing internationaltrade@the-eic.com

Colombia blocks new oil and gas exploration projects

The Colombian Minister of Mines and Energy, Irene Vélez, has declared that the country will no longer approve new oil and gas exploration permits. This decision is aligned with the presidential campaign, where the now-elected president Gustavo Petro reassured the importance of growing the renewable energy portfolio and terminating the dependency on fossil fuels.
