Sector analysis Floating solar PV in the Asia Pacific region The Asia Pacific (APAC) region is expected to contribute a great deal of solar capacity to the global renewable energy mix especially as the region benefits from high irradiation potential. The COVID-19 pandemic has affected global supply chains, causing start-up dates of many solar projects in the region to be pushed back. The region is looking to diversify its energy mix for both established and emerging markets. The energy transition is also directing national agendas across APAC and is impacting various industries and markets. With an expected rise in energy demand over the next few decades, there is a need for alternative energy sources to be implemented quickly in a move towards decarbonisation. That being said, the recent collapse in oil prices during the pandemic and the Russian invasion of Ukraine, in theory, will likely accelerate the shift towards energy transition which may help to boost the development of the renewable energy market, particularly solar PV. According to EICDataStream, 10% of all APAC solar PV projects expected to come online by the end of the decade are floating solar PV (FPV) developments. Owing to the geography of the region, particularly the countries in the south east, APAC countries often have land limitations, but an abundance of water bodies. These characteristics are now being exploited in the region for the development of FPV plants. Over the last decade, capacity of FPVs have risen from kilowatt scale to megawatt, which is promising, as the market is trying to scale up and harness the energy source. Key markets Investment interest is picking up all over the region, particularly in India and Indonesia. In India, groundmounted solar plants occasionally suffer from performance degradation due to high operating temperatures. Whereas FPVs benefit from the cooling effect offered by its location, for example, on India’s water reservoirs. And so, the FPV market in India is beginning to pick up pace. The Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) was established by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) in 2011 to support the implementation of India’s national solar mission. SECI specifically promotes the adoption of solar, and tenders large scale projects. In 2017, SECI invited expressions of interest for 10GW of floating solar power by 2022 to assess the feasibility of FPV developments. SECI is expected to issue a large scale FPV tender over the next year; especially with the likes of NHPC (National Hydroelectric Power Corporation) already moving into the construction phase of FPV on their hydropower reservoirs. In terms of operational capacity there are very few large-scale FPV projects; the largest FPV plant was commissioned in March 2022 with a capacity of 25.3MW.

That being said, 4GW of FPV capacity is expected to come online by 2030, according to EICDataStream. Despite the country’s potential, the government still needs to set policies and supporting standards to enable FPVs to contribute to India’s energy mix. FPV offers a new pathway for India to achieve its renewable energy ambitions as well as opening opportunities in domestic manufacturing. Elsewhere in the region, Indonesia is emerging as a major FPV market. According to EICDataStream, over 30% of all Indonesian solar PV projects in the pipeline are FPV, with a total estimated capacity of 3.8GW. As the world’s largest coal exporter, Indonesia is pushing for renewables generation to meet growing electricity demand; in 2020 the Indonesian government set a target of 17GW solar capacity by 2035. The Batam Floating Solar Project is one of the many FPV projects planned in Indonesia and is expected to come online by 2024. In July 2021, Singaporean-based developer Sunseap signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Badan Pengusahaan Batam (BP Batam) to build the FPV system with a co-located energy storage system on Duriangkang Reservoir in Batam Island. With a capacity of 2.2GW, it is the largest FPV system planned in the world, to date. Further down the pipeline, the Cirata FPV plant is under construction and with a capacity of 145MW it is expected to be the largest FPV plant to come online this year. It is to produce 250GWh/year of electricity and is set to compliment the energy generated by the adjacent and operational Cirata hydropower plant, in a hybrid fashion. The emergence of hybrid As seen in many Indian and Indonesian projects, hybridisation of FPV and hydropower is ever increasing. In the region, the coupling of these two technologies just makes sense. The technologies balance each other; for example, greatest solar power potential is during dry seasons, while hydropower generates greatest power in wetter seasons. Colocation of these technologies also presents a benefit in reducing transmission costs as they are able to share transmission lines and substations. In terms of increasing capacity factor, the nature of the technologies complement each other. Reduced water evaporation and PV panel cooling effects are additional benefits to this hybrid system, particular in the APAC region with high operating temperatures. Therefore, an increase in hybrid projects is expected across the region to harness both solar potential as well as operational benefits. This month, Inside Energy brings you an analysis of the floating solar market in Asia Pacific, Sonardyne’s collaboration with Mark R isley the University of Plymouth for marine monitoring, WIKA’s new diaphragm seal, as well as a guest editorial by Vysus Group on energy transition in the UK. With high irradiation potential, national agendas pushing to energy transition, and an expected rise in demand – beyond the fall in oil prices due to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine – the Asia Pacific region is likely to have its solar energy production boosted. In her sector analysis article, Ainee Shah explores the potential of floating PV projects in the region, where water bodies are abundant in most countries. A partnership between Sonardyne and the University of Plymouth is the subject of the members’ services section. The parties, combining the university’s academic and research strength with Sonardyne’s leading technologies, are looking to promote innovation in the British marine robotic and autonomous systems sector, which has been growing over the last few years. In spotlight on technology, we highlight WIKA’s new diaphragm seal. The device can be used in applications with very hot media, with model 990.45 fit to work even in temperatures up to 450ºC. The diaphragm seal provides high-precision measurement to refineries and other places. As for the EIC guest editorial, we welcomed David Clark, CEO of Vysus Group, the global engineering and technical consultancy firm. He dives into the findings of a survey commissioned by Vysus that interviewed 250 energy company owners and decision makers in the UK regarding their perception of energy transition. This is part of Vysus’ Planit22 campaign, aiming to increase awareness of energy transition challenges faced by internal and external stakeholders globally. It will be on location in the third quarter of 2023.

Rabigh Carbon Capture Plant Operator: Gulf Cryo Value: US$500m Development of carbon capture plant located at the Rabigh petrochemical cluster in Saudi Arabia. It has a capacity of 600,000 metric tonnes per year. Gulf Cryo will build and operate the facility which is expected to become operational by Q2 2023.

Members’ services Sonardyne and the University of Plymouth collaborate to advance development of marine monitoring The University of Plymouth and marine technology company Sonardyne have agreed a strategic partnership to drive innovation within the UK’s growing marine robotic and autonomous systems sector. The partnership will advance ocean data gathering technologies and platforms by leveraging the university’s academic resources and research facilities, Sonardyne’s leading acoustic and inertial navigation technologies, and the marine proving area Smart Sound Plymouth.

Kevin Forshaw, Director of Industrial and Strategic Partnerships in the university’s Faculty of Science and Engineering, said: “We are delighted to be deepening our collaboration with Sonardyne. The company has long-established connections with the city of Plymouth, and this new partnership will allow us both to push the boundaries of new technological development for remote and sustained ocean observation.”

Under the new agreement, the partners will work together to evaluate and develop emerging technologies on the university’s fleet of crewed and uncrewed surface and underwater platforms, all underpinned by a suite of Sonardyne’s technologies. This will include testing and evaluation onboard uncrewed systems loaned to the university by the Royal Navy, to support its research and development around maritime autonomous systems capabilities. The partnership will help establish closer working relationships between the university and Sonardyne, including enabling undergraduate and postgraduate students to participate in the testing of cutting-edge equipment, as well as highlighting future career opportunities. The initial three-year collaboration will also explore funding opportunities for joint research in areas of mutual interest, including ocean exploration, hydrography, ropeless fishing, offshore renewable energy and defence. In addition, it will further the university’s global reputation for marine research and teaching, with Plymouth ranked 1st globally linked to United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal number 14: life below water in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings 2021. This new agreement aims to bring a more co-ordinated and targeted approach to fields of mutual interest.

WIKA’S NEW DIAPHRAGM SEAL FOR PROCESS TEMPERATURES UP TO 450°C

WIKA has tailored a new diaphragm seal to applications with very hot media. Model 990.45 is suitable for temperatures up to 450°C. The high-temperature diaphragm seal is used in refineries, among other places, to enable precise measurement even at high process temperatures. It is combined with a capillary and a standard measuring instrument, without any additional cooling element, to form a measuring system. Its lower body, including flange connection, is made of a single piece, which minimises the risk of leakage. Customer-specific sealings simplify the connection of the diaphragm seal to the respective process. The new instrument can be fitted with fixtures for a lifting aid. It can then be moved and installed effortlessly. A flushing connection integrated in the lower body also enables the diaphragm seal to be cleaned without having to take it apart first.

ABB to electrify two plants in North America to produce green hydrogen

ABB has been awarded two major contracts by Plug Power Inc, a leading provider of turnkey solutions for the global green hydrogen economy, to provide the electrical systems for two new hydrogen plants in North America, set to collectively produce 60 tons of green hydrogen per day. Green hydrogen is produced with renewable energy sources and emits zero carbon when used as fuel. The first plant, Project Gateway, in Genesee County, New York, will be North America’s largest green hydrogen production facility, providing the north eastern US with 45 metric tons of green liquid hydrogen daily, which contains as much energy as 126 tons of gasoline and equates to 14,000 tons of CO2 per year. ABB will provide the full electrical system encased in an ABB eHouse solution – a prefabricated, walk-in, modular outdoor substation hosting a range of electrical, automation and ancillary equipment that provides the site and process power.

The plant will use Plug Power’s state-of-the-art proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers to split water into hydrogen and oxygen through an electrochemical process, using clean New York hydropower. The hydrogen produced will be used for the logistics and transportation sectors, enabling users to replace fossil fuels in onroad applications such as heavy duty freight vehicles and forklifts.

The order was for six API 610 VS4 pumps, two are pour point depressant pumps that are 18m in length and the other four are methanol lift pumps that are 10m long. All pumps have PT100 temperature sensors that have been designed and built along the length of the pumps to monitor the temperature of each bearing individually. For each pump, the temperature sensors are terminated in a top surface junction box. The wiring is then fed to a control box through a unique armoured umbilical arrangement to on an independent instrument skid for each pump. All the pumps and associated wiring and instrumentation are rated for ATEX Zone 0.

Ashtead Technology signs agreement in Asia Pacific

Fit for Offshore Renewables status achieved by CMP

Under the terms of the agreement, Ashtead Technology will service, repair, upgrade, calibrate and store the customer’s regional assets at its technology and service hub in Singapore, ensuring the equipment is project-ready for mobilisation across the Asia Pacific region.

The F4OR programme, developed in conjunction with the offshore renewables energy industry, is aimed at gearing up supply chain businesses with the skills required to supply into the sector. Crowcon Detection Instruments Ltd: carbon monoxide awareness – what are the dangers?

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colourless, odourless, tasteless, poisonous gas produced by incomplete burning of carbon-based fuels, including gas, oil, wood and coal. It is only when fuel does not burn fully that excess CO is produced, which is poisonous. When CO enters the body, it stops the blood from bringing oxygen to cells, tissues and organs. CO is poisonous as you cannot see it, taste it, or smell it but CO can kill quickly without warning. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) statistics show every year in the UK around 15 people die from CO poisoning caused by gas appliances and flues that have not been correctly installed, maintained or those that are poorly ventilated. Some levels that present do not kill but can cause serious harm to health if breathed in over a prolonged period, with extreme cases causing paralysis and brain damage because of prolonged exposure to CO. How is CO generated? CO is present in several different industries, such as steel works, manufacturing, electricity supply, coal and metal mining, food manufacturing, oil and gas, production of chemicals and petroleum refining to name a few. CO is produced by incomplete combustion of fossil fuels such as gas, oil, coal and wood. This happens where there is a general lack of burner maintenance, insufficient air – or the air is of insufficient quality to allow complete combustion. For example, the efficient combustion of natural gas generates carbon dioxide and water vapour. But if there is inadequate air where that combustion takes place, or if the air used for combustion becomes vitiated, combustion fails and produces soot and CO. If there is significant water vapour in the atmosphere, this can reduce the burning efficiency still further and speed up CO production.

Incorrect or poorly maintained appliances such as cookers, heaters or central boiler are the most common cause of carbon monoxide exposure. Other causes include blocked flues and chimneys as this can prevent carbon monoxide from escaping leading to dangerous levels accumulating. Burning fuel in an enclosed or unventilated environment such as running a car engine, petrol-powered generator or barbecue inside a garage or tent can lead to similar CO accumulation. Faulty or blocked car exhausts can lead to inefficient combustion and hence a leak or blockage within the exhaust pipe can cause an excess of CO to be produced. Some vehicles and properties may have flues or exhausts blocked after heavy snowfall which may lead to a build-up of carbon monoxide. A different cause of CO poisoning may result from some chemicals, paint fumes and some cleaning fluids and paint removers contain methylene chloride (dichloromethane), which when inhaled the body breaks this substance down into carbon monoxide leading to possible CO poisoning. Though to be fair, since methylene chloride is a listed 1B carcinogen, its breakdown to CO may not be the worst of a subject’s subsequent health problems. Another common cause of low-level CO poisoning is smoking, and smoking shisha pipes can be particularly bad, especially indoors. This is because shisha pipes burn charcoal and tobacco, which can lead to a build-up of carbon monoxide in enclosed or unventilated rooms. High concentrations of CO In some cases, high concentrations of CO may be present. Environments that this may occur include a house fire, therefore the fire service is at risk of CO poisoning. In this environment there can be as much as 12.5% CO in the air which when the carbon monoxide rises to the ceiling with other combustion products and when the concentration hits 12.5% by volume this will only lead to one thing, called a flashover. This is when the whole lot ignites as a fuel. Apart from items falling on the fire service, this is one of the most extreme dangers they face when working inside a burning building.

How does CO affect the body? Due to the characteristics of CO being so hard to identify, i.e. colourless, odourless, tasteless poisonous gas, it may take time for you to realise that you have CO poisoning. The effects of CO can be dangerous, this is because CO prevents the blood system from effectively carrying oxygen around the body, specifically to vital organs such as the heart and brain. High doses of CO, therefore, can cause death from asphyxiation or lack of oxygen to the brain. According to statistics from the Department of Health, the most common indication of CO poisoning is that of a headache with 90% of patients reporting this as a symptom, with 50% reporting nausea and vomiting, as well as vertigo. With confusion/ changes in consciousness, and weakness accounting for 30% and 20% of reports. Carbon monoxide can severely affect the central nervous system and those with cardiovascular disease. As CO prevents the brain from receiving sufficient levels of oxygen it has a knockon effect with the heart, brain and central nervous system along with symptoms including headaches, nausea, fatigue, memory loss and disorientation, increasing levels of CO in the body go on to cause lack of balance, heart problems, cerebral edemas, comas, convulsions and even death. Some of those who are affected may experience rapid and irregular heartbeats, low blood pressure and arrhythmias of the heart. Cerebral edemas caused because of CO poisoning are especially threatening, this is because they can result in the brain cells being crushed, thereby affecting the whole nervous system. Another way CO affects the body is through the respiratory system. This is because the body will struggle to distribute air around the body because of carbon monoxide due to the deprivation of blood cells of oxygen. As a result, some patients will experience a shortness of breath, especially when undertaking strenuous activities.

Every-day physical and sporting activities will take more effort and leave you feeling more exhausted than usual. These effects can worsen over time as your body’s power to obtain oxygen becomes increasingly compromised. Over time, both your heart and lungs are put under pressure as the levels of carbon monoxide increase in the body tissues. As a result, your heart will try harder to pump what it wrongly perceives to be oxygenated blood from your lungs to the rest of your body. Consequently, the airways begin to swell causing even less air to enter the lungs. With long-term exposure, the lung tissue is eventually destroyed, resulting in cardiovascular problems and lung disease. Chronic exposure to carbon monoxide can have extremely serious long-term effects, depending on the extent of poisoning. In extreme cases, the section of the brain known as the hippocampus may be harmed. This part of the brain is accountable for the development of new memories and is particularly vulnerable to damage. Figures have shown that up to 40% of people who have suffered from carbon monoxide poisoning experience problems such as amnesia, headaches, memory loss, personality and behavioural changes, loss of bladder and muscle control, and impaired vision and co-ordination. Some of these effects do not always present themselves immediately and can take several weeks or may be highlighted after more exposure. While those who suffer from long-term effects of carbon monoxide poisoning recover with time, there are cases in which some people suffer permanent effects. This may occur when there has been enough exposure to result in organ and brain damage. Unborn babies are at the highest risk of carbon monoxide poisoning, since foetal haemoglobin mixes more readily with CO than adult haemoglobin. As a result, the baby’s carboxy haemoglobin levels become higher than the mothers. Babies and children whose organs are still maturing are at risk of permanent organ damage. Additionally, young children have a higher metabolic rate, therefore, they inhale up to twice as much air as adults, which heightens their exposure to CO.

How to identify In the event of carbon monoxide poisoning there are a number of treatments, these depend on the levels of exposure, and the age of the patient.

Treatments There are several treatments for CO poisoning, these include rest, standard oxygen therapy or hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

For low levels of exposure seeking medical advice from your GP is best practice.

Standard oxygen therapy is provided in hospital in the event you have been exposed to a prominent level of carbon monoxide, or you have symptoms that suggest exposure. This process includes being given 100% oxygen through a tightfitting mask. Normal air contains around 21% oxygen. Continuous breathing of concentrated oxygen enables your body to quickly replace carboxyhaemoglobin. For best results, this type of therapy is continued until your carboxyhaemoglobin levels decrease to less than 10%.

However, if you believe that you have been exposed to elevated levels of CO then your local A&E would be the most suitable place to go. Although your symptoms will usually indicate whether you have CO poisoning, for adults a blood test will confirm the amount of carboxyhaemoglobin in your blood. For children this will lead to an underestimate of the peak exposure since children will metabolise the carboxyhaemoglobin faster. Carboxyhaemoglobin (COHb) is a stable complex of carbon monoxide that forms in red blood cells when carbon monoxide is inhaled, using up the capacity of the red blood cell to transport oxygen. The effects of CO poisoning can include breathlessness, chest pain, seizures and loss of consciousness which may lead to death or physical problems that can occur, depending on how much CO is in the air. Around 10 to 15% of people who acquire severe CO poisoning go on to develop long-term complications. These include brain damage, vision and hearing loss, Parkinsonism – an illness that isn’t Parkinson’s disease but has similar symptoms, and coronary heart disease.

The alternative treatment is that of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), this treatment consists of flooding the body with pure oxygen, helping it overcome the oxygen shortage caused by carbon monoxide poisoning. However, there is currently not enough evidence about the long-term effectiveness of HBOT for treating severe cases of carbon monoxide poisoning. Although standard oxygen therapy is usually the recommended treatment option, HBOT may be recommended in certain situations. The treatment provided is decided purely on a case-by-case basis.

Kent appointed as lead engineering provider on V Net Zero project

Kent has been awarded engineering work for the V Net Zero (VNZ) project by Harbour Energy, the UK independent oil and gas company. The project will store CO2 from the Immingham SuperPlace, located in the Humber region, the UK’s most energy-intensive industrial area, and could help decarbonise more than 50% of the area’s industrial emissions. The VNZ CO2 Transport and Storage project is expected to help securely store up to 11m tonnes of CO2 per year (MTPA) by 2030, and more than 12 MTPA by 2034, 9,000ft below the North Sea in the depleted gas fields of the Viking area.

NRL: lasting solution to skills shortage planned for Teesside

NRL’s new office in the Wilton Centre plans to provide a lasting solution to Teesside’s skills shortage. Politicians and business leaders have already spoken of the challenge of finding the right people to match the tens of thousands of new roles which will be created by the new Freeport and other major investments. That task is magnified by the number of skilled staff and contractors who moved away when work became harder to find. Specialising in engineering and construction, NRL recognises that there is no quick fix but believes it has chosen the perfect place to help bring about change.

The Wilton Centre is the 13th NRL office to open since the company was established in 1983. The centre’s accommodation manager Claire Morton said it was a welcome addition: “Our location means that we are in exactly the right place for businesses who want to be based near all of the exciting new developments taking place.” In just over a year Claire and her team have leased more than 30,000 square feet of office and laboratory space to new and existing occupiers. OceanPact provides support to ExxonMobil

OceanPact is celebrating the results achieved during its work in structuring the environmental licensing application for ExxonMobil’s exploratory campaign in the SergipeAlagoas Basin, offshore Brazil. The company planned, developed and executed all stages of the licensing process for the American oil company. The company is providing support during the campaign with the drilling of the first exploratory well (1-EMEB-3-SES) in block SEAL-M-428 (Cutthroat prospect). OceanPact acted from the opening of the administrative process at Ibama to the pre-operational assessment (APO), carried out by the environmental agency in a simulated oil spill in the Japaratuba River, in Aracaju. The simulation had 196 fishermen and local labour, 55 specialists from OceanPact and Witt O’Brien’s, in addition to technicians from the operator and authorities. The simulation had 9,300 metres of barriers to combat oil spills at sea.

OceanPact and Witt O’Brien’s will remain mobilised during the exploratory campaign, providing 21 specialised professionals on standby, 7 days a week, 24 hours a day, for immediate mobilisation in the event of an oil spill at sea. In addition, an offshore oil recovery vessel (OSRV) with a length of 65 metres and a capacity for 1,500m³ of collected oil is dedicated to the campaign. Other offshore support vessels are equipped with current buster 6 to combat oil spills and are also providing support to the drilling activity. OceanPact also has a base in Maceió with more than 13,000 metres of barriers, oil collectors, floating and land tanks, support vessels, 4×4 vehicles and quadricycles. The company also stated that it can use additional resources from its port and offshore bases, being able to provide an additional 37,000 metres of oil containment barrier.

Petroplan scales up operations in the Middle East

Petroplan, the specialist energy talent acquisition group, has scaled up its operations in the Middle East as the business continues to strengthen its client offering. The group will be providing expertise across the Middle East to support and supply international energy and infrastructure companies and EPCs by providing whitecollar, intermediate, contract and permanent engineering jobs to plug the gap with global contractors. An important strategic move for the business, Petroplan has strengthened its Middle East offices and teams to further support clients. Petroplan Dubai has acquired more office space located in the city’s business district at Jumeriah Lake Towers, capable of accommodating a growing workforce.

The NeuConnect interconnector is a privately financed project developed by a group of international investors that include Meridiam, Allianz Capital Partners and Kansai Electric Power, and is contingent on the successful tendering of the converter station and financing agreements for the project.

At the same time, Petroplan is accelerating the development of its Oman resources, bringing in three new additions to the Muscat office. Anwaar Ahmed has joined as a senior consultant, Raniya Mohammed joins the team as associate recruitment consultant, and Najla Kamil Al Bulushi will be the team’s newest contracts and mobilisation consultant.

The project will deliver the cable connection along a route which runs between the UK converter station located on the Isle of Grain in Kent, passing through UK, Dutch and German waters to the landing point in Lower Saxony in Germany to connect with the converter station near Wilhelmshaven.

While Petroplan’s Middle East teams are based in Oman, and UAE (Dubai), the group also supports operations in Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.

When completed in the coming years, NeuConnect will join the world’s longest interconnectors. Moreover, it is one of the first interconnectors to be financed through a project financing arrangement, demonstrating that the major infrastructure projects needed to deliver the sustainable energy goals in Europe are supported by private investment.

Prysmian to deliver the first interconnector between UK and Germany

Prysmian Group, a world leader in the energy and telecom cable systems industry, has been awarded a contract worth around €1.2bn by NeuConnect Britain Ltd and NeuConnect Deutschland GmbH for the turn-key design, manufacturing, installation, testing and commissioning of a 725km submarine interconnector that will directly link the German and UK electricity grids for the first time. The NeuConnect project will provide major energy transmission infrastructure that will contribute to the wider European goals for increased availability of economically beneficial, sustainable and secure electrical power. Prysmian will provide the complete cable system to be operated at ±525kV HVDC utilising massimpregnated (MI) paper insulated cables, and include fibre optic cables on the land and selected submarine sections, complemented with state of the art cable monitoring systems that will support the monitoring, maintenance and services to be provided during the warranty period.

With IT 6, mine clearance operations can be performed wirelessly and remotely, making site preparation work safer and more efficient

The submarine and land power cables will be manufactured at Prysmian’s centre of excellence at the Arco Felice factory near Naples. Offshore installation activities will involve three of the group’s own cable laying vessels including Leonardo da Vinci, the most capable cable laying vessel in the market, Cable Enterprise and Ulisse. Commissioning of the project is scheduled in the second half of the decade. The NeuConnect project joins the latest record-breaking awards to the Prysmian Group and follows projects such as Viking Link, the connection currently under installation between Denmark and the UK, as well as the recent successful awards of the major framework contract by Terna developing a more robust power grid in Italy and the strategic link connecting Saudi Arabia and Egypt by SEC and EETC respectively.

Sonardyne has wireless seabed capability

Marine technology company, Sonardyne, is aiming to improve the safety and efficiency of unexploded ordnance (UXO) clearance during offshore energy projects with the introduction of a secure, wireless underwater initiation capability. Sign up for the EICOnline newsletter

The company’s new Initiation Transponder 6 (IT 6) is designed to be connected directly to a remotely deployed, non-electric mine neutralisation device, such as a Viper MDS from ECS Special Projects. This allows explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) teams to send a wireless, acoustic command from their vessel, safely initiating a shock tube detonator. Recent demonstrations were conducted over distances in excess of 1000 metres away. IT 6 is based on Sonardyne’s fieldproven Wideband 2 digital signal technology, which offers a reliable and long-range underwater wireless communications link. The development of IT 6 means that technicians no longer need to wire UXO neutralisers up to signal relay buoys on the surface and are not restricted to good weather and daylight for setting up an initiation operation. IT 6 is small, lightweight and designed to be placed by an ROV or diver for both high order detonation and low order deflagration. It features multiple layers of security to prevent unintended activation, including a hydrostatic switch, which only allows the unit to be armed when a predetermined depth has been reached. Operations using IT 6s are controlled using Sonardyne’s new rugged Deck Topside case and cabled dunker. Environmentally rated to IP67, the case features a daylight readable interactive 7 inch resistive touch screen and rechargeable battery, for when operating on small boats with no external power.

The user interface was designed in close co-operation with EOD technicians and enables operating parameters to be set and multiple IT 6s to be configured prior to deployment. During a live operation, two physical buttons provide an additional layer of security, requiring users to hold one button to arm, then simultaneously press the other to initiate.

When disposal rather than avoidance is deemed necessary for turbine or cable route placement, our new IT 6 and topside will help those involved with the hazardous task to operate entirely wirelessly and in any weather, day or night. WEG to build new electric motor factory in Portugal WEG has just announced the construction of a new electric motor factory in Santo Tirso, Portugal. The company intends to invest €23.5m to build 22,680 sq m of manufacturing facilities on the same area where WEG already has a 16,300 sq m low voltage industrial motor factory.

UK energy business leaders overwhelmingly question whether transition from fossil fuel energy to renewables is ‘moving too quickly’, survey reveals: 93% believe COP26 has ‘galvanised’ the UK 81% believe ‘wind is the way forward’ Over a third have hired more people to help with transitioning

A survey, commissioned by global engineering and technical consultancy, Vysus Group, has revealed that 92.4% of respondents believe we are moving too quickly in our race to net zero. Moreover, 93% believe COP26 has ‘galvanised’ the UK into committing to sustainable targets. Over half said they are in the process of incorporating transition, environmental or sustainability targets into business planning, while 20% have already done so and 25% will do so in the next six months. The research has been revealed as part of Vysus Group’s launch of Planit22, a year-long campaign aimed at heightening awareness of the solutions and issues faced by internal and external stakeholders worldwide, as they adjust and transition to meeting sustainability commitments. The survey, conducted by thirdparty, and Market Research Societymember consultancy Censuswide, gathered opinions and insights across 250 energy company owners and decision makers in the UK. In addition, it revealed splits across age, geographic location and company size. Of those citing the transition was moving too quickly, millennials accounted for 94%, while the baby boomer generation were less inclined to agree, at 66%. Encouragingly, the survey also found that as few as 1.6% of those polled said that they had ‘no plans’ to ‘set transition, environmental

and sustainability targets’ in their business planning, however, nearly half (47.2%) of business owners and decision makers cited the biggest barrier to achieving net zero is cost. David Clark, Vysus Group CEO, said: “That such a high percentage of respondents feel that the transition to renewables is moving too quickly comes as no surprise, but we have to put that into context given these people are highly informed; they know what is required to hit targets not least the sheer scale of capital investments, planning, due diligence and risk analysis. “No one is disputing the objective, or what needs to happen. It’s the ‘how’ that is under scrutiny here, and those who aren’t talking about timing as an issue, those not directly involved in the process, will have less awareness of the real challenges involved. As we have seen repeatedly throughout our history, the evolution and deployment of technology can rapidly disrupt and transform how our world works, and while this will be a critical factor in delivering on transition objectives, this will need to be supported by governments to ensure infrastructure can keep pace with these transformations.” Vysus Group has launched Planit22 to not only envelop an internal culture of sharing ideas and shaping our own thinking around energy transition, with its 650-plus staff in more than 20 countries, but also to continue with the day job of supporting customers on that journey.

With the energy sector under closer scrutiny following COP26, the company is also keen to spread the message that while the more obvious routes to net zero in the public eye are in renewable energy sources such as wind, solar, tidal power and hydrogen, the industry as a whole is committed to maintaining sustainable approaches in much wider areas, with the development and deployment of new storage, transmission technologies, along with the significant scaling of the power grid infrastructure as well as growing requirements for large scale carbon capture and storage (CCS). The campaign will be based upon three pillars – education, collaboration and integration – and the company has appointed ‘sustainability champions’, who have volunteered to showcase how the work they do is juxtaposed against their own lifestyle habits. The survey also broke down responses by age, region and company size. Unsurprisingly, those under the age of 34 believe that COP26, across the board, has led to sustainability planning becoming a bigger priority, similarly, this group came out top when asked if their own business was doing enough towards transition to renewables. Sole traders and smaller companies (fewer than 99 employees) were also more likely to cite that transition was moving too quickly, potentially highlighting a lack of resource compared to those with more than 500 employees.

Iraq oil exports reach US$11bn in March Iraq exported US$11.07bn worth of oil in March, the highest level for half a century, as crude prices soared amid shortfall fears after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the oil ministry said. Oil exports account for more than 90% of Iraq’s income. Oil revenues are critical for Iraq’s government, with the country mired in a financial crisis and needing funds to rebuild infrastructure. Iraq, with a population of 41m people, is also grappling with a major energy crisis and suffers regular power cuts.

Shell launches start-up accelerator programme UK energy firm Shell has announced a three-month start-up accelerator programme for UAE energy companies. Called Shell StartUp Engine, the initiative was announced at the UK pavilion at the Expo 2020 Dubai site and aims to train early to mid-stage energy start-ups. It will help companies develop their capabilities and boost business growth within the smart and clean energy landscape.

Asia Pacific news Regional update

As expected, countries in Asia Pacific are starting to re-open their borders for travel. As of April 2022 these countries are open to Azman visitors without compulsory Nasir quarantine: Cambodia, Fiji, India, Laos, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam, Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, Japan, Malaysia and Indonesia. While they provide a quarantine-free entry, in most cases waiving the quarantine period is contingent on the testing and/or vaccination status of the visitor. In most cases, mandatory quarantine will still be imposed on those who test positive during the health screenings conducted at the airport. This marks the beginning of normality in the region after almost two years of the pandemic. China, however, is an exception where a city wide lockdown was imposed in Shanghai City due to the rising number of COVID cases. EIC APAC continued our programmes of in-person networking events with the Coffee and Chill Networking in March followed by the Ramadhan Iftar event in April. Both events received tremendous support from our members in the region despite the restrictions still in place. The two networking events will be followed by a similar event in the city of Kuching, Sarawak, at the end of June 2002 where we expect the participation of 150 attendees from Sarawak and also those coming from Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. For the record EIC has more than 20 member companies based in Sarawak. The EIC APAC team will re-activate our visits to the major cities in the region from this month onwards and is planning to visit Singapore, Manila, Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh, Jakarta and possibly Melbourne. In June EIC APAC will travel to Kota Kinabalu, Sabah to participate in the Sabah Oil & Gas Conference & Exhibition where myself and the regional analyst are invited as industry speakers. Our major event, EIC Asia Pacific Energy Conversations 2022 will be held on 18-19 May 2022. This event will be officiated by the minister of the environment of Malaysia with keynote speeches delivered by the British High Commissioner to Malaysia, HE Charles Hay and senior representatives from Shell Malaysia, PETRONAS and Sarawak Energy. The main themes of this event will be topics such as accelerating the green shift towards net zero and decarbonising the oil and gas industry. International energy players such as ABB Asia, GE Power, Honeywell, Schneider Electric, Siemens Energy, and UK energy players such as Aggreko, BP and Wood will be participating as speakers. China champions hydrogen in its push to decarbonise

China has launched a master plan to develop the country’s emerging hydrogen industry as a follow-on from last year’s landmark decision to set peak carbon emissions and carbon neutrality targets, despite different initiatives having been rolled out by local governments, organisations or business entities. The country’s National Development & Reform Commission (NDRC) has announced that the country will build up an entire supply chain for the hydrogen industry, with production ranging from refining by-products to green hydrogen. A massive expansion is planned in particular for green hydrogen, which is produced with renewable energy. China is targeting hydrogen production capacity of between 100,000 and 200,000 tonnes per annum by 2025.

PETRONAS signs new PSCs PETRONAS has signed production sharing contracts for five blocks that it had offered in the Malaysia Bid Round (MBR) 2021. The five blocks formally awarded were SB 412, 2W and X offshore Sabah, plus blocks SK 439 and SK 440 offshore Sarawak. Block SB 412 in Sabah was signed between PETRONAS, PTTEP and SapuraOMV Upstream, while the PSCs for ultradeep water blocks 2W and X were signed between PETRONAS, Shell and Petronas Carigali. The PSC for Sarawak blocks SK 439 and SK 440 offshore Sarawak was signed between PETRONAS, Shell and Petroleum Sarawak Exploration & Production (Petros).

Victoria sets ambitious offshore wind targets

Victoria has emerged as the first Australian state to set offshore wind targets, eyeing up to 9GW of capacity by 2040. Under its wind policy released in early March, the Victorian government has set a target to procure projects that will generate at least 2GW of offshore wind by 2032 – enough capacity, it claims, to power 1.5m homes and equivalent to about 20% of the state’s power needs.

US government requests US$48bn spending in 2023

The Biden administration has requested US$48.2bn in discretionary spending for the Department of Energy (DoE) as part of the federal budget for the upcoming fiscal year, which runs from 1 October 2022 to 30 September 2023. This amount includes US$9.2bn to support the introduction of energy transition technologies, including research, development and demonstration activities. The government is keen on scaling-up domestic manufacturing of equipment associated with clean energies in order to reduce dependence on foreign suppliers and create local jobs.

Oil and natural gas will account for the largest share of energy consumption in the country by 2050, led primarily by the transport and industrial sectors. The estimate is provided by the latest Annual Energy Outlook report by the Energy Information Administration (EIA), which also projects that renewables will be the fastest-growing energy source by 2050.

BOEM to hold auction for OFW lease areas in the Carolinas

The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) will organise an auction for two offshore wind lease areas in the Carolina Long Bay area on 11 May, which could accommodate up to 1.3GW of new capacity. 16 developers have been qualified to join the auction and companies are able to bid for one or two areas. Potential bidders include Avangrid, BP, Ørsted, Shell and TotalEnergies.

The Rio office is delighted to announce that three of our interns have been promoted to full-time positions. Lucas Machado was successfully hired as Editor and Internal Communications Clariss e Roch a Co-ordinator as part of the marketing team, Lucas Ramos was promoted to the role of Energy Analyst and Laura Carvalho was promoted to Email Marketing Co-ordinator. We are happy to have them on our team and very proud of the work they have been doing so far. If you’re attending OTC in Houston, there are several initiatives related to the Brazilian market. Myself and Gabriella Fernandes will be joining from South America, please contact us to receive the full agenda that includes a barbecue on Sunday, an evening reception on Monday, two networking initiatives at the pavilion and a breakfast organised by the Brazil-Texas Chamber of Commerce. On 17 March we were once again delighted to host another event in the series ‘Brazil-UK Collaboration Forum’. This event’s topic was ‘Winds of Opportunity – Offshore Wind Market and Supply Chain Capabilities’. We were joined by Mr Carlos Peixoto, Head of the Oil & Gas Committee for Britcham in Rio de Janeiro and by Mr Anthony Preston, DIT’s Deputy Consul General, who gave the event’s opening remarks. They were followed by DIT’s Head of Energy, Maritime and Mining, Mr Renato Cordeiro who explained what the DIT does and its contributions, and about the UK industry, it’s capabilities and its involvement with the Brazilian supply chain.

Draft bill calls for green H2 targets in Brazil

Brazilian senator Jean Paul Prates has proposed a draft bill calling for hard targets for the introduction of green hydrogen into the country’s energy matrix. Dubbed the Hydrogen Law, draft bill 725/2022 sets a 5% minimum target for the blending of green hydrogen for the country’s gas pipeline network by 2032 and 10% by 2050, effectively making the National Petroleum Agency (ANP) responsible for regulating hydrogen-related activities in the country.

This report is now available to all members. He presented the report’s objectives, provided data about the Brazil power matrix Brazil Operational Renewables and the added capacity EICAssetMap Report in 2021, and also brought information on Brazil’s energy transition trends and technologies. Finally, Mr Luiz Ballester, Atlas Renewables’ Commercial Director, began his presentation giving a brief description of his companies’ operations, capabilities and projects. São Paulo has 460MW of EfW potential

The metropolitan area of São Paulo could generate 460MW from urban waste, according to the Brazilian Association for Energy Recovery from Waste (ABREN). Greater São Paulo could accommodate 23 generation facilities with an installed capacity of 20MW each, requiring an investment of US$3.5bn. Energy from waste represents a massive business opportunity for Brazil, which currently generates 79m tonnes of municipal solid waste (MSW) per year.
