THE IMPORTANT "FATHER ROLE" IN THE FAMILY A FATHER'S ROLE IN THE FAMILY IS VITAL TO A CHILD'S PSYCHOLOGICAL AND PHYSICAL WELL-BEING. WHEN A CHILD HAS A HEALTHY RELATIONSHIP WITH A FATHER FIGURE, THEY TEND TO GROW UP TO HAVE HIGHER LEVELS OF PSYCHOLOGICAL HEALTH AND BETTER QUALITY RELATIONSHIPS. blueprint for what a relationship with a man looks like. This can impact both the father-son relationship and the father-daughter relationship. This means that unhealthy relationships with a father figure can significantly impact the child's psychological well-being and unconscious choices as they become adults. It's been shown that if a child has a healthy relationship with their father, they tend to have higher self-esteem, confidence, and more stable relationships with men. Conversely, if a child has an unhealthy relationship with their father, they may experience more psychological distress and struggle with forming healthy relationships with men as they become adults.

CHANGING ROLE OF MODERN-DAY DAD

I

IT'S ESSENTIAL TO remember that the term father does not solely apply to biological relationships, nor does it only apply to a husband and wife relationship. Same-sex couples, transgender men who are parents, and single fathers can provide just as meaningful parent-child relationships as families with a husband and wife. There is no one type of family where the child enjoys the healthiest father-child relationship.

Father figures: - May not be related at all to the child or children they care for - May be a step-parent (bonus far) - May have adopted a child or children

The "hands-on dad" idea has taken shape in the past several decades. Historically, men's identities were heavily tied to their careers, which still holds somewhat true today, with about 76% of men reporting that they feel financial pressure to provide for their families. However, more than ever, men are taking a more active role in parenting, and the Corona pandemic with its forced work-from-home status proved that. As a result, some fathers went from only working to sharing that caregiver role with their partners who needed to work. There is still the notion out there that believe that women are better caretakers when it comes to child-rearing, and few believe that men are better caregivers than women. So it's interesting for me, as a non-Dane, to see how clearly involved Danish men are in their children's upbringing. A recent report for the Nordic countries shows that fathers want to be with their children early on. Between 89 percent (in Denmark) and 96 percent (in Sweden) say they want to be very involved in the early months and years of their children's lives. When I first married my Dane 25 years ago and had our first child in South Africa, my friends were blown away by how maternal and hands-on he was with the child care, chores around the house and cooking. I realised how true this was once I started observing my friends around us. I was always asked: Are they all like that in Denmark? Of course, I hope things are improving in South Africa, but I can honestly say that Denmark and other Scandi countries are leading the way for equal parenting. Cheers to our dads!

Regardless of what the family looks like, the most crucial factor is the quality of the parent-child relationship.

WHAT ARE THE ROLES OF FATHERS IN MODERN FAMILIES? Fathers today are expected to parent and assist with household chores equally with their partners. There have been studies related to married men and women who had just had their first child. The results illustrated that a good partnership and an effort to reduce their wife's stress led to overall decreased aggravation for both partners, even when their baby was fussy. Fathers take on multiple roles within the family, such as financial contributors, supportive partners, loving parents, and sometimes stay-at-home dads.

WHY DAD IS IMPORTANT A father figure can significantly influence the life and wellbeing of a child. In families where the father figure is present, the father serves as one of the first male role models and male relationships the child will encounter. Children are extremely sensitive and observant and internalise relational experiences. These early interactions serve as a

THE FEEL-GOOD STORIES OF DENMARK

Esbjerg's International Men's Club

MICHAELA MEDVEĎOVÁ

NIKOLAOS PAPADOPOULOS

WE ARE ENTREPRENEURS

Join a great networking opportunity for internationals in Esbjerg with the International Men's (and Women's) Club. The club is one of several of the church's initiatives to help immigrants and refugees settle in the country. The club was started by Poul Nielsen 8 years ago. The idea was to create a place where men (and women, respectively) could gather and socialise regardless of culture, religion, or origin. While everyone is welcome to join, most members are non-Danes, with most coming from Eritrea and Somalia. While it sounds like a social club, its focus is still primarily humanitarian. Sponsored by Folkekirkens Tværkulturelle Center (the church's cross-cultural centre) and headed up by Lars Kristiansen, the club provides members with practical information about integration, taxes and Danish state procedures that might seem daunting to a newcomer to the country. The church also offers its own free Danish language lessons in its similarly focused Language Café initiative!

THE ART OF BUSINESS, THE BUSINESS OF ART Innovative, successful, creative - definitely a fitting description for the women attending the WISE project. Funded by Erasmus+, this adult education programme aims to support women with artistic or crafty skills and give them the business and manufacturing knowledge to become successfully self-employed.

“What an amazing experience and resource to have so many creative minds to brainstorm with.” The training consists of three modules: creative entrepreneurship, contemporary opportunities, and innovation. Each module has four 4-hour sessions. Diana tries to keep them very practical and invites experts to share their knowledge. After the sum-

mer, the art of all programme attendees will be introduced in Copenhagen, and selected pieces will feature in an art gallery in Lithuania to give them international exposure. After module one, the women's experiences were positive. Being in the same room and pushing each other to apply their existing knowledge and the extra tools and know-how they are gaining - is valuable. "What an amazing experience and resource to have so many creative minds to brainstorm with," said Melanie Smith, a creative entrepreneur and art educator. "I want the women to challenge the status quo. They are incredibly creative and talented, but they bought into preconceived notions: if you're an artist, it should be hard, or you're always supposed to be on social media. We want them to understand the whole opportunity - what they can choose that works for them," concludes Diana. She's working on adjusting the course to an online version on the uQualio platform so it is open and accessible for everyone. THE-INTL

“My job is similar to my old one, as many people here mourn the loss of their homes, countries, and loved ones. It is essential, especially in these strange times, to never lose your compassion, even though we might have become desensitised to tragedy.”

ART ESCAPE STUDIOS & CAFÉ

In Denmark, WISE is headed by Diana Medrea-Mogensen, the founder of We Are Entrepreneurs. After starting her first company in 2013, she took all the courses available for small businesses. In 2019, she decided to help others do the same as a consultant. "But it turned out that small businesses don't have the time or money to invest in such services. That's how I ended up developing adult education programmes through grants like this." WISE was created with five other organizations from Italy, Greece, Lithuania, and Iceland. "We developed all the training material together as we all have our areas of knowledge and visited each other to learn about what challenges other groups might face." After finishing the materials, they started a three-month pilot programme in April. In Denmark, it collaborates with Art Escape Studios & Café, and ten women attend. Some have a formal art education, and some pursue art as their passion. The programme empowers them to collaborate and create local communities.

I have also personally participated in the church's initiatives, and speaking with other participants, I can see that the club is indeed helping people settle in the country, and for those forced to flee their own, it is a crucial lifeline towards inclusion in Denmark. Lars, a former funeral director who wanted to try something new, is very proud of the club's work. Leading the club is part of his job as the church's responsibility for cultural issues. He modestly says he is still learning the ropes as the recently appointed leader, but he is very optimistic about the future. "My job is similar to my old one", he says, "as many people here mourn the loss of their homes, countries, and loved ones". It is essential, especially in these strange times, to never lose your compassion, even though we might have become desensitised to tragedy. THE-INTL

CONSCIOUS TALK AND BRUNCH WITH NATHA

BABYSALMESANG IN ENGLISH INTERNATIONAL SUNDAY SERVICE IN ENGLISH

Sometimes we feel very intimate with a person far away from us physically, and sometimes we feel as if we are on a different planet with the person we have a sensual interaction with. What is it that makes us feel like that? What is the nature of intimacy? Of that delicious feeling of being so close and open with another being? And what is it that makes us yearn for it so much? Intimacy or 'into-me-you-see' represents a sense of closeness, something significant, which we all search for. We all have a fundamental need to feel intimately connected and fused with others, with nature, with our life. We all seek to feel that profound intimacy, to melt into sweetness until we feel as one. But what does it truly mean to be intimate? Tantra teaches us that intimacy is a sacred act which always starts inside ourselves. You will be given keys to the tantric perspective and how to begin practising intimacy and dare to open up more. It will contain both an inspiring talk and a few exercises to help us experience sacredness and intimacy in various life situations. The talk is for both couples and singles, old and young, married and not so merry.

- Suitable for babies up to 12 months - Remember to bring a blanket! - Refreshments will be served afterwards. - It's FREE but remember to sign up on our website under our calendar or via facebook under our events.

A triathlon is based on three disciplines, swimming, biking and running, starting with a swim, then the bike, and finishing with a run. The event's emphasis is on having fun and helping build confidence by completing a challenge. The only competition will be for the individual to achieve what they can, and in fact, it does not have to be competitive. It could be just to have fun and give it a go. It is therefore open to all regardless of level or experience. The event is run in accordance with the rules of the Danish Triathlon Federation, which will provide a judge on the day. We are also working closely with DGI, Gentofte Swimming Club and Skovshoved Triathlon Club. We have also received sponsorship from the Gentofte Kommune, Nordea Fund and some local businesses.

Every single summer since 1979 Copenhagen Jazz Festival has been taking over Copenhagen as one of Europe's most important international music events based on eminent artistic quality and a sharp focus on new departures in both Danish and international jazz. The festival envelops the Danish capital, offering a sumptuous musical feast to the 250.000 guests who join us year after year. Enjoying live jazz on the city's streets, in its clubs, cafés and concert halls, and at open-air night venues – all in the very heart of historical Copenhagen.

If you want a truly immersive experience this summer, you must visit Art Nordic. Here we'll transform Lokomotivværkstedet into a colourful and culture-fueled Mekka with the help and participation of more than 250 artists!

Come for some warm jazz tunes at Social Brew! Art is a beautiful way of learning more about our everyday world, stimulating the senses, and getting insight into the feelings and passions that are at play in our unique historical period. Our artists are here to tell a story, show you something important or make you feel in ways that you didn't think possible.

Copenhagen's legendary status as one of the jazz capitals of Europe grew in the 1950s and 1960s when a whole host of leading American jazz icons had their creative base in the city. Among those who called Copenhagen home are Dexter Gordon, Stan Getz, Ben Webster, Stuff Smith, Ed Thigpen, Thad Jones and Kenny Drew. Each of them has drawn inspiration from Denmark's jazz scene and the era's most important jazz club: Jazzhus Montmartre. This was also when some of Denmark's best musicians had their international breakthrough, musicians like Alex Riel, Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen and Palle Mikkelborg. Copenhagen's unique jazz history is a key factor in the exceptionally high level of the Copenhagen Jazz Festival, which can be experienced at the many free open-air stages strategically located throughout the historical city centre. Together with Copenhagen's record number of cafés and music venues, these stages create a unique atmosphere, bringing the city alive with jazz from early morning to late night. People don't only come for a fantastic musical experience but for the unique atmosphere throughout Copenhagen when jazz takes over the city.

SUNDAY PICNIC

AROS MUSEUM

MØNS KLINT

Following Sunday Service at 13:00, we will head over to Skydebanehaven (also known as Papegøje Legepladsen) for a picnic next to the church. Although we provide beverages, you bring your own sandwiches.

With a total of 20,700 square metres distributed on ten storeys, ARoS is one of the largest art museums in Northern Europe. ARoS has about one million visitors each year, making it the most frequented art museum in Scandinavia.

Møns Klint is a great place for anyone who loves nature. The cliff rises 128 meters above sea level, and the coastline is approximately 7 km long. The sight of the cliff testifies to the enormous forces of nature that have created Denmark.

WHERE: ELIJAH'S CHURCH (ELIASKIRKEN), VESTERBROGADE 49, 1620 KØBENHAVN V TIME: 14:00

ARoS features four spacious galleries, an ARoS Focus gallery, and a storey featuring installational art.

Here nature is unique, and you can find both plants and animals that do not exist elsewhere in Denmark. The high calcium content found in the soil is why there are about 20 species of wild orchids in the area.

ARoS presents art from either the museum collection or by national and international artists in each of these galleries, e.g. Grayson Perry, Robert Mapplethorpe, Joana Vasconcelos, Bill Viola, Olafur Eliasson, Paul McCarthy, Shirin Neshat, Lucian Freud, and Francis Bacon.

The cliff is very dynamic and is influenced by wind and weather, which means that it is in an eternal breakdown. This degradation gives the water in front of the cliff a distinctive blue-green colour, and it also contains exciting fossils from the past wildlife.

The staircase It is possible to go down the staircase to the beach, from where you can see the cliff from the water's edge and really sense the height. The Maglevand stairs at Geocenter Møns Klint is the most used staircase, with 497 steps from the top of the cliff down to the beach. Does that sound like a long trip? Luckily you have the opportunity to take small breaks along the way, from where you can enjoy the view over both the forest and the cliff.

There is the greatest likelihood of landslides on the cliff during the winter and spring periods, but they can come all year round. It is both loose chalk and large amounts of rainwater that happens to landslides, and where both clay, mud, and chalk are sent to the sea. You experience it every year in smaller quantities, and sometimes there are larger avalanches. The biggest in recent times occurred in 2007 when the ornament known as Great Speech fell into the water.

If you do not feel ready for a long staircase, then there is also a boardwalk where everyone can enjoy the fantastic view of the cliff!

Welcome to Camp Adventure, a magical place in the middle of Gisselfeld Kloster's beautiful forests, where nature forms the framework for a unique nature experience. Here you can explore the 45 meters high iconic Forest Tower, which has a fantastic view from the top over South Zealand.

In a field on the island of Lolland, overlooking Småland waters, a monument that combines sculpture and music in a landscape full of history creates a unique experience. The Dodecalith (Greek: Twelve stone) consists of 12 stone columns, each 7-9 meters high and weighing 25-45 tons, where the upper 2 meters are carved like heads, all facing the centre of a circle 40 meters in diameter. Under a circle of sitting stones, a 12-channel sound system is installed, allowing spatial electronic music to play inside the circle daily from sunrise to sunset all year round.

VISIT THE NEW HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN HOUSE

You can also try your hand at Denmark's largest climbing park, which has a total length of over 5300 meters and varies in difficulty for the whole family. Here you will also find Denmark's longest cable car at over 450 meters.

This summer, the biggest new attraction for many years opens in Odense - a new H.C. Andersen House. Japanese architect Kengo Kuma has designed a spectacular museum that consists of indoor and outdoor spaces (2/3 of the museum is underground), and so far, it looks beautiful. Andersen and Odense H.C. Andersen's adventures have made Denmark's greatest contribution to world culture. Even though the stories were written many years ago, they are still highly loved in large parts of the world and arouse the imagination, contemplation and inspiration of children and adults. H.C. Andersen was born in Odense in 1805.

The 12 stone figures are mady by sculptor Thomas Kadziola: "Figures up to 9 meters would seem grotesque if they were given clear facial expressions such as a smile. At the same time, they need to have an intimate expression of not appearing fascistoid. The bigger the head becomes, the less the effect and vice versa. For me, the expression, personality lies in abstraction. It is incredible that a character can be described through abstraction.

If you dream of sleeping under the stars, you can spend the night in our unique glamping cabins, where you sleep in our Mongolian tents with glass roofs. At Camp Adventure, nature is in focus, and we hope you can take a break from everyday life and rediscover the connection to nature.

FOR MORE INFO: HTTPS://WWW.CAMPADVENTURE.DK/EN/

His early years came to play a major role for the poet, and many fairy tales are based on experiences from his childhood. Therefore, it is natural that Odense has a special obligation to take care of the legacy of and the dissemination of H.C. Andersen's life and work and the culture that formed the framework for this.

CAMP ADVENTURE FB PAGE

In order to maintain concentration and impact throughout the years of work, it is necessary to have a personal relationship with what I do. In this way, the work will reflect where I was in life when the figure was created. Something private becomes personal and, therefore, universal. When all 12 figures are finished, they will hopefully mirror lived lives others will recognise themselves in. My hope is that the finished Dodekalith will stand as a kind of zodiac of life. The twelve insights of life."

A visit to the new museum will contain more questions than answers: About Andersen's romanticised childhood, about his unrequited love life, about constantly being on the move in an attempt to find his place in life, stick out, get away, find a home. The fairy tales are familiar but do not behave quite as we remember them when the visitors themselves have to live them out: When it is their own shadow that begins to live its own life, when they are the Emperor in the Emperor's New Clothes, or when they must find the courage to open the doors to the dogs in the Tinderbox.

WHAT'S BETTER THAN A CUP OF COFFEE? WHEN IT'S RESPONSIBLY SOURCED AND SERVED ALONG WITH ITS STORY. AT LEAST WHEN YOU ASK IRFAN ASGHAR, A BRIT WHO, AFTER MOVING TO DENMARK AND STARTING A FAMILY, FOUND HIS CALLING IN ONE OF THE DANISH NATIONAL PASTIMES. COFFEE.

W

WHEN YOU HEAR Irfan Asghar, the Copenhagen-based coffee shop Social Brew cofounder, talk about coffee, two things happen almost instantly. You find yourself wishing you were sipping a nice cup of coffee. And you find it hard to believe that coffee has not always been Irfan's path. The UK native immersed himself in the coffee business after starting a life and a family in Denmark - and the Copenhagen coffee scene is all the better for it.

CHANGE OF PLANS But why did Irfan exchange the British Isles for Zealand in the first place? As he says with a chuckle, there's always a woman. His wife is from Denmark, and they met when she came to the United Kingdom to study. But as a lawyer, the professional opportunities for her weren't as great as they would be in Denmark. Irfan had his own business at the time - importing electronics and selling them online in England. "I was young and confident, thought I would just start a similar business in Denmark. When I came to Copenhagen, it was a beautiful summer city. I thought: yeah, I could live here." Initially, the couple decided to stay in Denmark for five years, and then they would reassess the plan. In between, two main things intervened. First, they had two children - and Brexit happened. "Looking back at it, we decided we were in the right place to have and raise kids. And this year will mark my tenth Danish year. I feel like I should get an award," laughs Irfan.

FOOD SCENE THAT SLEEPS EARLY While it was the right place to be, a significant cultural shock was how similar people were in Denmark and how prescriptive the culture was. "So, for example, whatever you want to buy, it has to be one out the famous 5 brands or trends. And it's great if you do

fit into the box – but society isn’t fair to those that don’t." Irfan considers himself lucky to have met his wife before moving to Denmark, as he got a small network through her. "It's one of the reasons why I stuck to the coffee shop culture. It was very easy for me to network through it, a way to have a social life without really trying to find it. It probably would be more difficult and disheartening if I worked in an office." He was also missing more colourful meals, food from all around the world - and meal times threw him for a loop. "I was in England last weekend, and we went out for dinner at 23:00. I was thinking it was midnight now in Denmark - and there's nothing open. England's much more lively in this sense, open until three in the morning. The cold is the same, the dark is the same, but you don't feel it as much." But after ten years of living in a different country, its culture and customs start becoming your new normal. For example, Irfan spends much more time at home with his kids. In England, there was always something to do, somewhere to be. "I'm getting used to the privacy. In Denmark, you don't have that much interaction with others. In England, anyone can just call you out for dinner. We don't really plan that much ahead. Here, my wife tells me she has dinner with her friends booked for August." To go back to living in England, at this point, Irfan would probably have to reverseengineer everything he's been through for the last 10 years. But he's no stranger to reinventing himself.

BACK TO THE DRAWING BOARD After moving to Denmark, it turned out that Irfan's business model was not replicable. 10 years ago, online buying still wasn't a massively popular thing, and the market size wasn't sufficient. "The buying habits are different here as well. It's all about being recognised, being a brand. England was primarily about price. Here, as long as the prod-

uct is a test winner and is recommended, they can sell it for whatever prices they want. So it sent me back to the drawing board." Down the line, the new plan would turn out to be Social Brew, which opened in 2018. But in the meantime, just to get out of the house, Irfan picked up a few shifts at a coffee house. "I came here as a boss of my own, with employees. And now I was taking instructions from 18-year-olds on how to wash dishes. But that's the expat life, right? You leave everything behind, start over, and have to take a few steps back. It's about finding your way." But what started with just learning about coffee and its culture - he was a Brit, after all! - ended with him growing alongside the company to being the operations manager, overseeing about 170 employees. Along with his start in coffee came the beginnings of the language he calls coffee Danish. "But when it got conversational, I'd switch to English again. I found my British accent to be an advantage - people wanted to know my story. I think if I spoke broken Danish, nobody would be interested. Just another immigrant." By now, thanks also to his brief work as a taxi driver, and a much more permanent role as a father of two bilingual kids, he can carry out a basic conversation.

three. "I was really not ready for sending my son into a nursery when he was still in the 'goo goo ga ga' phase. I'd have to go in and hand over my son, my most prized thing in life, with a language barrier where the handover process was very much like 'værsgo' (here you go). If this man asked me for the keys to my car, I would think five times about it. But here I am, just handing over my baby for him for a day." However, after suffering the initial shocks of the system, Irfan appreciates the system. "You can carry on with your own career. And we understand you need to leave at three to go and get your kids. In England, you really don't have that culture."

RESPONSIBLE PARTNERSHIP

Having kids made Irfan want that work-life balance, too. "You can't be available all day. You can't go and teach someone how to close a store every day. So one Saturday, I promised my kids I'd take them swimming. And then, I got the usual phone call - somebody is sick, somebody hasn't got the keys to enter the shop… And I have to drop my life and fix it; that's my job. But I thought: I can't do this anymore." So instead, he decided to turn his attention to coffee and social responsibility in the business. And he wouldn't do it alone. On a coffee forum, he bumped into his now partner Don Mousavi. He had just landed from the Middle East, been doing But as critical as he can be towards his Danish progression, Ircoffee projects, and now was asking general questions about BUT THE FAMILY LIFE IN DENMARK fan's kids can be his harshest language critics. And they do! The social part of Social Brew is about three aspects. Besides social responsibility, there's the element of working locally: donating or helping out with local events or charities. And there's the importance of creating a good social environment for their staff. Irfan calls them his second family in the coffee world. And in Denmark they are also in one of the best places to make that difference. Irfan laughs and says he never really pondered why Danes are so coffeecrazed. They rank high on the list of the world's biggest consumers. "And Danes like to support the small man, their local coffee shop instead of supporting the large chain stores." Irfan's role is to look after the shop's operations recipes, menu, developing relationships with external clients, and the day-to-day running of the store. "My wife tells me I talk to random people all the time. I'm from Manchester, and we're very much into small talk. I think she's weird because Danes are reserved, and she thinks I'm weird. I like talking to people, making them laugh, and giving them good service to feel valued. It gives me feedback and the energy to move forward. And I'm in a brilliant place to do all that in the shop." live close to the beach. The infrastructure is made for parenting. I wouldn't have it any other way." "There are too many rules pushing you to fit into the box. I have a beautiful life, and I think Denmark has much to do with it. I wouldn't be able to have a small independent coffee shop in England. I'll take the positives - but hopefully, move on at some point. Life's too short to be living in one place. I don't think I can go back to the UK anymore either. So I'll move on. That's also a by-product of being an expat - once you've done it, it's easier to do it again and start all over." THE-INTL

IT TAKES TWO TO TANGO! OUR RESIDENT HEALTH & FITNESS GURU, ALEX, HONOURS FATHERS THIS JUNE AND THE IMPORTANCE OF ADOPTING HEALTHY FAMILY HABITS.

PHOTOGRAPHS UNSPLASH / ALEXANDRA BECK

L

LOOKING BACK, I would not have mentally survived early motherhood without my husband and father to my daughter right there by my side. While I expanded through pregnancy, delivered Norah via emergency C-section, bled through breastfeeding, and worried about everything, I hardly recognised all the ‘ness’ ‘hangriness’, moodiness, sleeplessness and ‘momsterness’ - he was putting up with. Yet, on the frontline, sideline, and let’s face it, just ‘on the line’, he has been listening, sympathising, organising, cooking, playing, fixing, encouraging and, without a blink, making sure that his daughter and I always felt safe, important and loved. Dads! You are ROCKSTARS! Thank you for making our days brighter and joyful and taking the kids roller-blading, biking, and to football practice, for letting your daughter dress you up as a princess and paint your nails purple. Thank you for taking a night shift and cooking dinner, even if it’s take-out… thank you for making us feel like a million bucks and being our rock through thick and thin! A reminder to all dads - please don’t forget to take care of your health. Physical and mental. Because we need you, and you need you too. Most often, health awareness is directed to mothers and their recovery post-partum. However, fathers’ well-being is equally as important, and both play a pivotal role in a balanced life at home. Things can get overwhelming, and if you don’t acknowledge it, it may lead to a long and winding road of health issues. Busy jobs, family and social obligations… time flies, and every minute seems to be accounted for. But, you can remember the days when exercise and eating enough protein were part of your conversations with friends. And now, survival mode is on, and your body is begging for that long lost memory. So, enjoy your life as a father, and it’s ok to want to be yourself again, even just for an hour here and there! Remember this, though: just as you have been there to cover for mum, mum will be ok to cover for you too. So, even though it may seem like mission impossible, there is always a way to find an hour or two each week to take care of yourself. Don’t be afraid to take up the subject at home with your partner, and maybe they can be a part of helping you schedule activities that make you smile inside and out. And then consider these activities like important meetings.

PAVLOVA WITH SUMMER BERRIES CRISPY MERINGUE AND PILLOWY MARSHMALLOW COUPLED WITH WHIPPED CREAM AND SEASONAL FRUITS — HAPPINESS ON A PLATE! PHOTOGRAPHS & TEXT: NATASHA LIVIERO / UNSPLASH

PAVLOVA MAKES 1 X 22CM PAVLOVA

INGREDIENTS: 180g egg whites 300g fine castor sugar 8g cornflour 6g lemon juice 250ml cream, whipped 300-400g fresh berries, i.e. strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, blackberries 100g fresh figs, thinly sliced Mint and edible flowers to decorate

METHOD: 1. Set oven to 1200/1100 fan. 2. Trace a 22cm ring onto a piece of baking paper and place it on a baking tray. 3. In a stand mixer with a whisk attachment, beat the egg whites on medium speed until soft peaks form. 4. Add the castor sugar a tablespoon at a time and beat for 30 seconds between each addition. If the castor sugar is too granular, pulse it in a blender for a few seconds for a finer consistency (and faster absorption into the egg whites). 5. Scrape down the sides of the bowl with a spatula and increase the speed to medium-high. 6. Continue to whisk the meringue until it is smooth, thick and shiny. You should not be able to feel sugar grains when you rub the meringue between your thumb and fingertips. 7. Sift the cornflour over the meringue, add the lemon juice and gently fold together. 8. Dab a little meringue onto the corners of the baking paper, flip it over and adhere to the baking tray (to prevent the marker from transferring onto the pavlova). 9. Pile the meringue onto the baking paper and gently shape it inside the 22cm ring, smoothing the sides upwards and flattening the top with a palette knife. 10. Bake in the oven for 90 minutes. Then, switch off without opening the door and leave the pavlova inside for 3 hours or until completely cooled. 11. Once cooled, top with whipped cream, berries and figs. 12. Scatter the mint and edible flowers for additional decoration.

NOTES: 4The pavlova can be made the day before and stored in an airtight container in a dry, ambient area. 4Add the whipped cream, fruit and decorations just before serving. 4Store leftover pavlova in the fridge - it will soften but still be delicious!

CRYSTALS FOR HIM MARILYN MONROE ONCE

said, "Diamonds are a girl's best friend,"...but what about men? Traditionally, gifts for him were not found in the healing crystals aisle. However, a vast amount of crystal energies would make the perfect wingman for him. A note to men, "if you are worried about rocking healing crystals… don't be". Fashion trends have seen a surge of jewellery incorporating healing stones for you. There are many ways to wear crystals, from simply putting the stone in your pocket to wearing it minimally, such as a bracelet.

Eye Of The Tiger Found in regions of South Africa, Brazil, and India, tiger eye is a popular stone for the masculine spirit. As the name implies, looking in a tiger's eye requires 'courage', which this stone is said to manifest plenty. Moreover, tiger eye is known to provide all of the keys to success, including ambition and purpose…deeming it very popular among entrepreneurs.

Men In Black All black is always classy and in style. The same can be said about these two healing stones, obsidian and tourmaline. Both stones are vital in the energies of protection and clarity. Obsidian helps you overcome numerous problems by clearing your mind and expelling negative energy. Like obsidian, black tourmaline also aids in clarity by carving through anxious thoughts and reducing stress. Black tourmaline is probably 'the' ultimate stone when dealing with negative energies. It gets rid of those unhappy energies, but it is also vital in attracting positive ones.

Malachite For Men If rose quartz is the love stone for her…then malachite is cupid's arrow for men. Found in several regions of Africa and Russia, malachite is the best stone in attracting love for the 'masculine' nature. The stone helps you to open up to love in a wiser sense. Sometimes deemed the stone of 'tough love', malachite helps you identify past negative behaviours…creating encouragement for change. The stone leaves you open to receive love imperfectly. A reminder to embrace that the journey to finding the perfect partner is relative to YOU.

Behind Every Great Man…Is Some Jasper Jasper can be found worldwide, with noticeable deposits in India, Madagascar, and Egypt. The red and brown hues of jasper crystals help men feel more familiar. Specifically, more grounded, supported and centred on significant life decisions and situations. Soon to be fathers gain comfort and peace through this earthy toned stone. If you are not ready to rock a jasper necklace, you can easily place the stone on your desk for the same energies.

Staying Focused Sometimes juggling a full plate in adulthood is inevitable. Men, traditionally, carry the title' leader of the house' and understandably can be overwhelmed. The perfect stone for maintaining focus is sodalite. It helps you to focus your mental energies and compartmentalise each task appropriately. It also aids in improving communication and self-expression…which your partner will be sure to appreciate. The stone can come in various colours, but the deep hues of blues with white inclusions are known as the healing stones of truth.

Do Healing Crystals Work? This debate is heard all around the world! According to science, the answer may differ from one's own positive thoughts. The use of healing crystals can be seen worldwide for many centuries and is believed to ward off illness and negative energies. However, despite the lack of scientific evidence, healing crystals have gained more popularity. Is it simply a placebo effect...or the power of positive thought? Either way, these crystals make the perfect statement piece in any wardrobe. PARENTAL LEAVE IN DENMARK DISCUSSING THE NEW RULES REGARDING PARENTAL LEAVE MEAN FOR FATHERS AND FOR NON-TRADITIONAL FAMILIES IN DENMARK.

PHOTOGRAPHS UNSPLASH

TEXT HEATHER STORGAARD

T

THESE NEW PARENTAL leave rules in August 2022 aim to encourage greater equality, but some political parties have argued that the new rules offer new parents less freedom than current legislation. Denmark has clearly been ahead of the game with parental leave and gender equality for a long time. When I was born in the UK, my dad took a week of annual leave before being sent away on business for long stints abroad, allowing him to avoid changing a nappy. On the other hand, my Danish father-in-law took the vast majority of the parental leave when my husband was a baby. On the other hand, my mother-in-law returned to running her business as quickly as possible. Her husband looked after the baby full time, even back in the 90s. Currently, parents in Denmark have 48 weeks of parental leave, most of which can be taken by whoever chooses. In most, although not all, this time is used by the mother. According to the new rules from August, each parent will have to take off at least 11 weeks each or lose the allowance. This somewhat limits choices, which may not sound like a step forward at first glance. But, surely the freedom to share parental leave as wished is the best way? In many cases, the problem is that heterosexual couples have been transferring all of the leave to the mother. The new rules encourage both parents to be equally present in their newborns' lives, as allowance not taken will simply be lost. This aims to change social norms and structures that pressure women to be the primary caregiver, especially for babies. When the government announced that they would create new rules, the LGBTQ community was keen for updates that reflected their reality of family structures, which are often more complicated than heterosexual couples. Rainbow families

HEATHER STORGAARD WRITER

gave evidence of their lived experience of parental leave, describing the stress that they had been placed under by restrictive systems allowing only two parents to be recognised. For example, due to complicated documentation or legal issues that can surround surrogacy, some rainbow families can find that legally, the two actual parents of a newborn child are not yet registered as such. Or, if a couple and a donor have decided to all take on parental roles, this wasn't reflected in the law. The new laws on parental leave will address this by allowing the none-earmarked allowance to be shared so that, for exam-

ple, the carrier of the baby, their partner, the donor and their partner could all get some paid time off to bond as a family, in whatever shape that might be structured. Another question that arose was what would happen for single parents? For example, if two weeks were earmarked for each parent, and they would otherwise simply be lost, would single-parent children lose out on time with their mother or father? In this case, all of the allowance may go to the single parents, but the transferable leave can be given to another caregiver, for example, a grandparent. THE-INTL

MEN'S CHANGING ROLES IN THE UK WELL-TRAVELLED WRITER SHANI BISHOP SHARES HER OPINION ON DAD'S ROLES IN PARENTING TODAY. PHOTOGRAPHS UNSPLASH

TEXT SHANI BISHOP

M

MEN'S ROLES HAVE changed in the UK, this change has taken place within my lifetime. Since returning from Denmark, the changes are more noticeable.

GENERATIONAL CHANGE My mother was at home when I was young, and my father worked. This was standard for most families. Fathers generally didn't change nappies or push buggies. According to a recent British Social Attitudes survey, more than 60% of British people now believe that men and women should contribute to the household income. Less than 20% now believe that men should work and women should look after the home and family. While these attitudes are less prevalent now, they still prevail in some quarters. When I got married, both my mother and my mother in law thought I would give up work (or work part-time) once the children came along. Things have really changed when I look at my friends and their relationships. One friend has a very balanced relationship where chores, childcare and work are equally shared. She feels proud of this as she works 4 days a week and is fortunate to be able to do this. Another female friend is the breadwinner, while her partner looks after their son full-time. Their situation is unusual in that the roles are entirely reversed. He is happy to take this role and looks after their child and a grandparent who lives with them. When he used to go to playgroups, he was often the only man and struggled to fit in.

THE SCHOOL GATE The main change is at the school gate. Dads were already picking up and dropping off, but covid has accelerated this change. The juggling of roles over the past two years has caused everyone to look at how their lives are arranged and question it. With more parents working from home, dads have far more opportunities to be involved. My husband loves doing the school run because of the time he has alone with our youngest. Many of the dads picking up are the primary breadwinners, but this is no longer a barrier because of the flexibility work provides now. Men of my generation are expected to change nappies, collect children from nursery and participate fully. I think the shifting of attitudes does cause problems for men. The desire to provide for a family is very strong within men here, and so when roles are reversed, it can be difficult.

JUNE 2022 - WWW.THE-INTL.COM

Whilst I started reading every day to my kids when they were little, my husband took on this role later on. Many studies show boys struggle with reading, so we felt this was important. I think it's important for boys to see that men can fulfil many roles in life so they can try different things. Whereas my father's generation generally left the supervision of children to the mothers, I noticed now that men take equal responsibility. Of course, my father changed my son's nappies and was happy to be involved, but I think he was unusual among men of his generation. He also shares all of the household tasks, which I think is unusual again.

LOCKDOWNS Recent research from the London School of Economics shows that the lockdowns caused some roles to be reversed while others were reinforced. For example, in the first UK lockdown, many men were furloughed, so they took an increased role in childcare and homeschooling. This may cause a shifting pattern over a more extended period which can only be good for everyone! THE-INTL

FATHER FIGURE PHOTOGRAPHS UNSPLASH

TEXT MONIKA PEDERSEN

I

IN DECADES PAST, the traditional role of

“Denmark is forward-thinking regarding paternal leave, and its laws give fathers the right to time off work to connect with their new child.”

a father was to be the breadwinner and the disciplinarian. The remainder of childrearing was left to the mother. Fortunately, this approach has changed drastically, and fathers are expected to play a significant part in a child's life. A father's role is different from a mother's, and it complements the parenting team in whichever gender configuration.

A FATHER'S RESPONSIBILITIES Though the primary bond is between mother and child, a father reinforces the safe environment created by the mother by interacting with the new-born and later toddler. A father is the second person from whom a child feels love and security, and so the concept of connecting and trusting others begins. Fathers can be good listeners. Men are often a little more neutral and detached and can provide a child with a different perspective - this can help diffuse tensions. Fathers also have responsibility for financial matters, household chores, and child activities or supervision. Active involvement in parenting means that similar pressures and challenges mothers experience are appreciated. Moreover, a more equitable split in tasks allows a partner to support the mother, who then can experience a better sense of balance. This benefits a child as there is a greater sense of tranquillity within the household. It also helps keep the parental relationship on a more even track. Furthermore, it can allow a mother to return to work, giving the household more choices.

PATERNITY LAWS Denmark is forward-thinking regarding paternal leave, and its laws give fathers the right to time off work to connect with their new child. They can have two weeks within the first fourteen weeks of the birth, and then there is a period of 32 weeks where they can take paternal leave. Of course, economic decisions or work pressures may prevail, but the law clearly highlights the serious stance towards fathers taking time off for the vital family bonding process. Research confirms that a father who

MONIKA PEDERSEN INTERNATIONAL EDUCATOR takes paternity leave connects far better with a new-born than one who continues to work. In the long term, this promotes a more meaningful relationship. In some of the larger cities in Denmark, father parenting classes are offered, so father groups can learn and prepare for the role and discuss their concerns and questions. Once more, this highlights the keenness to advocate for the significance of the fatherly role.

ACTIVE INVOLVEMENT Studies indicate that a father actively involved with a child's upbringing increases their offspring's likelihood of academic success. It is documented that boys often underachieve in school, especially in their early to mid-teenage years, and a positive role model in a father can help keep a child motivated. Research indicates that fathers can help to advance language and numeracy skills through their interactions and assistance with school studies. For example, reading regularly with a child and discussing books and stories increases a child's literacy progress. In the same way, working through numeracy exercises and constructing games or fun activities that involve the use of numbers solidifies a child's mathematical learning. These actions help build strong foundations that allow the new knowledge to sit firmly and

ensure that a child's academic pathway is more successful. It can be argued that either parent could promote this, yet, schools are actively encouraging fathers into the school environment as, traditionally, participation has been low. Where there has been an increase in fatherly engagement, positive outcomes have been experienced. It is not only in school that this is important, as the impact also comes through activities such as sports and recreational hobbies. For boys, the more tactile activities help build physical and mental resistance. While for girls, the protective and sensitive father instils a sense of worth and presents a well-adjusted role model that often helps prevent involvement in dysfunctional relationships and teenage pregnancies.

INTEGRAL ROLE The inclusion of fathers in a child's caregiving is vital and beneficial whether within the same household or if parents live separately. Being a reliable force, giving time regularly, ongoing, makes a powerful difference to a child's start'. FIGHTING THE GOOD FIGHT - A FATHER'S STORY IN HONOUR OF FATHER'S DAY, WE BRING YOU THE STORY OF PETER SCHLAGER.

PHOTOGRAPHS UNSPLASH / ELENE MIELLA PHOTOGRAPHY

TEXT MICHAELA MEDVEDOVÁ

B BEING A FATHER

to three kids with special needs, all while living with his own diagnosis, he chose to help other parents in the same circumstances find the strength and support they need.

HURDLES ON THE WAY TO HELP

Their journey began about six years ago when Peter and his wife divorced, and he moved away with his children. Meeting new people and making friends wasn't easy, but they got by - until Peter's oldest started having trouble getting up for school. "The first reaction, as someone who didn't know anything about autism, was to push him to school." It took time and a lot of fighting, but his son was diagnosed with autism and ADD and got an offer from a suitable school. However, Peter's younger son started experiencing the same problems. This time, Peter recognised the symptoms and tried to get help early on - but getting a diagnosis was a struggle. "Psychiatrists don't take ADHD as seriously as autism. But my son was not getting better, so I asked for him to be examined for autism. The physician told me I was just keen on getting a diagnosis for my kids." But eventually, his son was diagnosed with autism as well. In the midst of this, Peter realised he might have ADHD, the inheritance of which is relatively high. He was right. When Peter's daughter started struggling, he was prepared - but was told she was simply acting out because of the divorce. "Eventually, they gave in and sent her to get examined. Unfortunately, she has ADHD too, and hopefully, will attend a new school soon."

NEED FOR STUBBORNNESS After a lot of fighting with the system, Peter has been able to get all his children proper help. "But I am actually one of the few who has never been forced to complain about the municipality's decision. Maybe I'm just more stubborn, but I got help for my kids by plain fighting." But he realises how lucky he is. "There's a lot of stigmas and a lack of professionalism in the municipality system." That began 15 years ago when, after a systemic change, municipalities took over people's affairs with special needs, and the number of experts decreased. "People

who actually look at the children that may need a diagnosis don't have the knowledge. They only see a troublesome divorce and only look at one isolated problem. They lack a different, bigger perspective." The fight to get proper help understandably took a toll on Peter's life - professional and personal. "I couldn't go to work because I had to take care of my kids. I wouldn't leave them."

FINDING YOUR TRIBE There are a few adjectives Peter uses to describe his journey. Weird. Full of sadness and worrying. Lonely. To combat them, his advice for other parents in similar situations is to go online and find a social media group that would be able to give them a supportive network. "It's like finding your tribe. You get a high degree of understanding and feel seen unlike anywhere else. However, it can be quite lonesome on this road. Sometimes, you are asking yourself: Am I going crazy? Am I overdramatising this? This way, you can get some comforting confirmation. For this, you cannot rely on your friends or family to fully understand your situation."

MICHAELA MEDVEDOVÁ comes from Slovakia and moved to Denmark 3 years ago to study for her Master's degree. She says living in Odense is the perfect city for her because it's not too large to be intimidating, but still exciting! She works at Umbraco as a Magical Copy Whisperer and started a podcast with her friends - @humans.of.sdu. She loves watching and talking about movies, Harry Potter, karaoke nights (even though she can't sing to save her life), and pub quizzes (winning them, to be specific).

JUNE 2022 - WWW.THE-INTL.COM

Besides emotional support, the groups can also provide practical assistance or legal advice, making the journey towards proper help a bit shorter. "It just helps you keep on fighting and hoping." Luckily, Peter found his tribe. He's been a part of #enmillionstemmer, a movement fighting for the rights of people with disabilities and mental vulnerabilities as the social system in Denmark has been failing them since almost its very beginning three years ago. He got to know Monica Lylloff, one of the co-founders, when he sought answers in various support groups on Facebook. Monica, also a mom of three kids with special needs, was answering lots of questions. "All these people were seeking help and answers for the same things. So why not make a group for everyone to share? Make some noise so we can get some change? So I told them: When I get on my feet a little more, I will help you. And one day, I was fed up with everything and wrote to Monica: I'm ready now." The five parents behind the movement see their purpose clearly: get the message out, get the ball rolling. As many parents with special-needs kids don't have the energy to put up a fight, #enmillionstemmer is doing it for them. As winding as their family journey might have been, Peter now can share his experience with other parents. "My kids taught me more than I can ever teach them. I never used to have a second thought about anything. The kids made me look at life a bit differently - I'm feeling it in a whole new way. It's real." THE-INTL

THE PROCESS OF BUILDING HABITS GUIDE TO SELF- DEVELOPMENT (PART 6) PHOTOGRAPHS UNSPLASH

TEXT AINA MASOOD

S

SOMETHING WE ARE all familiar with is that human beings are social animals. This reflects our deep need for belongingness and reliance on others to cultivate a happier, healthier, and meaningful life. Abraham Maslow, a psychologist, stressed our need for belongingness and rendered it essential to reaching our full potential as human beings. Our social relationships and interactions make up for a sizable chunk of our day, and the quality of such interactions has a powerful impact on our mental and emotional well-being. Hence, creating and supporting healthy relationships in life is a big part of bettering ourselves.

AINA MASOOD PSYCHOTHERAPIST

WHAT IS SOCIAL WELLNESS/HEALTH? It is defined simply as our ability to interact with others, form meaningful relationships, adapt comfortably to different social situations, and express ourselves. Having positive social habits can help us build a social support system that has been shown in the literature as a substantial positive contributing factor to mental wellness.

IMPORTANCE OF SOCIAL RELATIONSHIPS IN LIFE AS AN EXPAT One of the biggest challenges of living as an expatriate is lacking social support and difficulty finding “your people”. When we move to another country or even a city, we uproot our social relationships and must build them again from the ground up. This process takes time and is relatively slower if you are not a student. It requires us to put ourselves out of the known and comfortable and be vulnerable. It can be emotionally taxing, making building healthy social relationships as an expat even more essential.

HOW CAN YOU KNOW THAT YOU ARE SOCIALLY HEALTHY? Some signs that you can use to identify if you are socially healthy include the following:  Being your authentic self most of the times  Engaging with people in your community  Creating healthy boundaries  Having a social support system

ONE OF THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES OF LIVING AS AN EXPATRIATE IS LACKING SOCIAL SUPPORT AND DIFFICULTY FINDING "YOUR PEOPLE."

 Building and maintaining strong relationships with friends  Being around people that make you feel safe and secure  Feel like you can have trustworthy people  Being able to express yourself without the fear of judgement

HOW CAN YOU IMPROVE YOUR SOCIAL RELATIONSHIPS? If for whatever reason, you feel like you lack healthy social relationships, you can improve the quality of your interactions. The first step here is to remember that you can not pour from an empty cup, so working on your fulfilment and happiness is essential. Once you start working on your emotional and mental well-being, you will feel drawn to include people in your life with whom you feel more authentic around. Look for ways you can enrich your existing relationships and build new ones. To work on your existing relationships, you can start with identifying how you feel when you spend time with certain people.

Based on this information, you can decide if you want to invest further in this relationship or are looking for something more. If you’re going to invest more, you can schedule meetups or virtual coffee dates, travel together, plan fun activities and check up on each other. Remember that you might have to put in more effort with some people than others and if you are an expat, having a virtual social support system can work wonders but also try and focus on having a physical one. To find new social connections, you can join a group that might be focused on a hobby—for example, joining a book club etc. If you are an ex-pat, learning a new skill could bring you closer to people like joining the language school or anything new like taking cooking classes or art workshops. In Denmark, volunteering is an excellent way to meet more locals and practice Danish. It gives you a sense of connection and opportunities to interact and engage with the culture. Another excellent way to socialise is taking part in local events like cleanup drives or flea markets. THE-INTL

AN EDUCATION GAME-CHANGER FOR JOSEPH FROM GHANA HOW A DANISH SCHOLARSHIP AND MASTER’S DEGREE OFFERED A LIFE-CHANGING OPPORTUNITY

PHOTOGRAPHS UNSPLASH / JOSEPH YAMOAH

TEXT SKYLER BENTLEY HALL

ORIGINALLY FROM GHANA, Joseph Yamoah moved to Denmark seven years ago to study an MSc in Global Development Studies at the University of Copenhagen. He was fortunate enough to be granted a Danish Government Scholarship, which transformed his life. Joseph exudes positive energy that is refreshing to be around, and in a recent interview, Joseph shares his journey from an international Master’s student to an influential father, husband, and professional in Denmark.

FROM THE WARMTH OF GHANA TO CHILLY DENMARK Compared to other Development Studies programmes, the one that KU offered stood out. It was a research-based interdisciplinary programme – a mix of Economics, Anthropology, Political Science, and geography. In my Bachelor’s in Political Science, I used a mixed-method approach to writing my thesis, and I enjoyed doing that, so it made the program a ‘no brainer’ for me. The experience was eye-opening – coming from Ghana to one of the coldest places without having any structured network. In the beginning, it was tough to transition into a new country, but the leap in the quality and standard of education was quite steep. I struggled a lot with things that others would have considered ‘basic’, but once I started finding my feet, rhythm, and vibe, it became an enjoyable and life-transforming experience. The educational standard here is very high, and students are responsible for driving their academic life, fortunately with guidance from tutors and advisors. Danes are very helpful, and some of my classmates were very supportive during the transition phase.

INTERDISCIPLINARY STUDIES AND TRANSFERABLE SKILLS My degree has taught me to think critically and understand arguments from different perspectives because of the interdisciplinary approach. Here I appreciate and can draw analysis from both quantitative and qualitative data – which is very useful in understanding feedback to improve employee experience while engaging with different stakeholders. Furthermore, the focus on group work has been essential in working with different teams, stakeholders, and customers.

LIFE-CHANGING SCHOLARSHIP In 2015, two main scholarships were available to international students, the DANIDA Fellowship Scholarship under the Building Stronger Universities (BSU) initiative and the Danish Government Scholarship. To this day, I do not know how I got the scholarships, but I believe it was by the Grace of God since I could not afford to study in Denmark. I am grateful to the University for this opportunity – it brought me to Denmark. As a result, I met my Danish wife here, we have two kids together, and I am now employed full-time. Truly life-changing!

FATHERHOOD HIGHS AND LOWS I will summarise this with a quote from Johann Wolfgang von Goethe – “Whatever you can do or dream, you can begin it. Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it.” This has encapsulated how I live life. One highlight that stands out for me as a father is when both my kids were born in the hospital room, I promised to do my very best for them, loving them to the best of my ability. As a result, they change the way you view the world and make the anonymous poem ‘A Little Fellow Follows Me’ more real, especially these first few lines: A careful man I want to be — a little fellow follows me. I do not dare to go astray, for fear he’ll go the self-same way… In terms of challenges, I believe there could be more support available for men transitioning into fatherhood - I had no assistance whilst my wife received a lot of support and resources to help her transition into motherhood. Fortunately, Danish society supports fathers by offering flexible paternity leave. I am constantly learning and taking these different challenges as they come into my stride.

WHEN DENMARK CALLS, I ANSWER... NARCIS SHARES HIS PERSONAL STORY ABOUT THE DANISH HOME GUARD.

PHOTOGRAPHS HJEMMEVÆRNET

TEXT NARCIS GEORGE MATACHE

I

I RECENTLY SIGNED a contract to defend and protect the Danish lands against all invaders. So if the day came and Denmark called, I would have to answer, no matter what, and to be honest, that gives me both pride and a sense of calmness in front of the storm. Instead of hiding inside my house, cowering in fear, waiting for the invader to break my door, I will be prepared. I will know how to protect my family and land, and I will have the tools. You might think that I have volunteered to join the army. Yes and No. Yes, I have joined a branch of the army called the Danish Home Guard, but no, it is a part-time, do-it-when-you-can type of contract that allows you to do this next to your job. So you can have your office job in the day, and (sometimes) in the afternoon, you can go guns blazin’ while rollin’ in a military SUV. You can go from skinning a rabbit in the forest to driving speed boats and helicopters. Or you can become a leader of men and make unforgettable memories, together with people you will be able to call “friends”. The Danish Home Guard is expanding as the budget for defence has increased. The gates are largely open, and they welcome new applicants. Do you need to be a Danish citizen or speak fluent Danish to join? No. If you have lived for at least five years in Denmark and can understand a simple conversation in Danish, you are good to go. Am I the only international in there? Absolutely not. As one of my friends put it (who was already a member when I joined), there was one international for every Dane present at one of the courses. Should I be able to run 50 meters in less than 7 seconds and know how to shoot a gun? Nope. No military experience is needed, and there are no minimum athletic parameters you should fulfil. Good health is all you need.

Then, ideally, in a maximum of 14 days, a local Home Guard unit will give you a call to confirm your interest and invite you for an “information evening”.  At the “information evening” you will participate together with other people interested. You will receive a presentation about everything related to the Danish Home Guard, and if you are still interested, you will have a short one-on-one interview with one of the officers (questions about your work, education, family, hobbies, views over the world, etc.) and then you will be guided to complete an official application to join.  After you apply, you will be vetted to ensure you don’t have a criminal record and/or have extremist views. Once approved, you will receive a contract in your e-BOKS.  Afterwards, you will be invited for a fitting session for your military clothes. Also, if you don’t have any military training, you will be assigned to the “Education Regiment” until you complete 250 hours of training (a maximum of 3 years). After you complete your military training, you will be able to choose which regiment you would prefer - from drones and cybersecurity to dog handlers and police. LIKE EVERYTHING IN the universe, the yin and the yang coexist. We all have the masculine and feminine energy within us regardless of gender. We often associate masculine energy with a man, a father figure, but it is not always the case. They embody the stronger side of that energy, while tough and assertive women are often more connected to their masculine energy. The masculine energy usually represents logic, structure, confidence, assertiveness, boundaries etc. Hence it is more seen in the father figure as we grow up because, in most families, fathers are the ones who provide a structure for the home and keep it safe. When we connect to our masculine energy, embrace it, respect it, and use it. Have you asked yourself how are you integrating these qualities into your daily life? RELATIONSHIP WITH OUR FATHER Men usually conform to what society perceives, with rules of how a man should behave and act. We all might not be lucky enough to grow up with a father or a father figure who openly expresses love and shower us with attention because it’s been considered weak. Most of the time, they were the biggest absent figure in a family due to work and other reasons. Many women and children step up and fill the role, adopting warrior-like energy. This subconsciously pushes the female to connect with their masculine energy more than the receiving and gentler feminine energy. Our relationship with our father hugely affects us. It shapes us emotionally and psychologically growing up and affects our relationship with people around us in time. It is often complicated and problematic. Therefore, we often hear women choose a partner with qualities like their father. If you have an unhealthy relationship with your parents, chances are it affects your attachment style. Just because men have a more dominant masculine energy, it doesn’t mean they have less capacity for emotions and love. It’s only a matter of how and when they understand and express that. A boy who was forced to grow up into adulthood is often a wounded child left abandoned, neglected, and incomplete- imagine that for your father or yourself. How does it feel? Who has the compassion for this little boy taking up all the adult responsibilities? It might take them a while to process and feel their emotions, but it is there - have some patience. This patience is equally essential to understanding all facets of our emotions. Showing emotions is not weak - it is one of the most powerful things one can do.

ACKNOWLEDGING THE EFFORT Sometimes I wonder, for a man being honoured on Father’s Day, does it mean acknowledging their achievement at work and providing a good life for their family? Have they ever been honoured for their emotions, love, devotion, and dedication to their families? In animal kingdoms and mankind, men are always the ones who go out hunting and fighting for life. Has anyone honoured their courage, bravery, and sense of duty? We are living the lega-

During June, we can start by simply acknowledging the love from our paternal ancestors, expressed through action and acts of service. Release any resentment, anger, or fear towards them. Let’s celebrate their courage and pride, let them know, thank them, and forgive the tough love or lack of. May all the fathers be honoured and showered with love. THE-INTL

FROM NEMID TO MITID DANISH DIGITAL SAFETY UPGRADE.

PHOTOGRAPHS DIGITALISERINGSSTYRELSEN / UNSPLASH

TEXT MARIANO ANTHONY DAVIES

D DENMARK IS THE

most digital country in Europe. For years, the Danish Agency for Digitization has been developing strategic collaborations to set the course for digital transformation. These collaborations led to the creation of NemID in 2010. At the time, NemID was one of the best digital identity solutions in the world. Since 2021, Nem ID has gradually been replaced by Mit ID. If you are registered and live in Denmark, you will receive a message in your eBoks, when you need to do something. NemID is a common secure login on the Internet, whether you are doing your online banking, finding out information from the public authorities or engaging with one of the many businesses that use NemID. It allows you to use the same login everywhere. So whether you are doing your online banking or you need to view your tax file, the way you log in will be exactly the same. It consists of a User ID, a Password and a Code Card containing codes (one-time passwords). You first enter your User ID and Password and then a code from your Code Card when you log on. You can use it on most computers with an Internet connection. There are only three things to remember: Your User ID, Password and Code Card. You choose your own User ID and Password, and the Code Card is a little piece of laminated card about the size of a credit card, which you need to look after carefully. You can also take NemID with you and use it on other computers. With modern smart phones, a NemID App can be downloaded, and this App can replace the physical Code Card, which has a limited number of codes which need to be replaced once all the codes have been used. NemID is still a very reliable solution. However, after more than ten years since its creation, new challenges have emerged. To ensure that the national digital identity infrastructure can meet future needs, a significant update of the ID solution was necessary. Therefore, the migration to MitID was planned as part of Denmark’s Digital Strategy 2016-2020 to equip citizens, businesses and public sector employees with a more secure digital ID solution. The goal of this migration to MitID

MARIANO ANTHONY DAVIES PRESIDENT & CEO OXFORD THE GOAL OF THIS MIGRATION TO MITID HAS BEEN TO PROVIDE DANISH SOCIETY WITH A MORE RESILIENT ELECTRONIC ID SOLUTION. has been to provide Danish society with a more resilient eID solution. In addition, the new solution should withstand the digital threats that the future might bring. Another practical reason is the expiration of the NemID contract with Nets. Due to tender obligations, the Danish Digitization Agency had to select a new tender to provide a digital ID. This created an opportunity to re-consider the existing identification system and evaluate the need for a better eID. MitID has been introduced to Danish citizens and businesses since May 2021. The transition period will continue until the end of 2022. This means that public authorities and organizations will have to support NemID and MitID during the migration period. Danes will be able to use both eIDs until NemID is phased out. MitID is primarily intended as an app accessible via a smartphone or tablet. The MitID App looks and works similarly to the NemID App – you can still approve activities, transactions and payments by swiping your finger on the screen. In addition, users can log in to the App with their User ID and Password. However, there will also be physical options to use MitID, such as:

BUSINESS SERVICES APS

CHIP: For

high-frequency use or when the highest level of security is required, a MitID chip (U2F unit) is available for purchase and can be ordered at MitID. dk. You have to press the button on the chip to approve the activity. The chip then communicates directly with a mobile or computer using Bluetooth, NFC (like contactless payment) or USB.

CODE READER: For blind and visually impaired people who will receive a special Code Reader. This device shows the onetime codes on a large screen and reads them aloud (both in Danish and English). THE-INTL

DID YOU KNOW? Many Danish public libraries either have or facilitate English book clubs. If you are interested in joining one, just ask at your local library. If you would like to start one, you can meet at the library, and of course, the librarian can help you choose and order the books and maybe help you find other readers.
