ONE OF THE best things you can do as an individual who
is part of a thriving and growing town or municipality is to take an active role in your community. And yes – that means putting down your phone, leaving the confines of your home, and getting out there to meet and talk with people. Community events, activities and gatherings are a great way to network, make new friends, nurture long-lasting relationships, and often help other people in your community in a multitude of ways. In the end, you can walk away from a live event with something as simple as a good feeling and a great memory… to something as amazing as a new friendship that can last for years.
BENEFITS OF BEING PART OF AN ENGAGING COMMUNITY There are so many positive aspects to being part of a group or community. Providing unique opportunities for people to learn from each other and support and encouragement are invaluable in joining forces with others.
SUPPORT: Being part of a community enables us to give support to other members. Being supportive of others will help them to feel good and better about themselves. With so much stress in the busy world we live in, there’s never been a more critical time to help others struggling with their mental and physical wellbeing.

"SORRY, MY MOM IS HERE!" she says with an apologetic smile as a woman with matching blonde hair walks by. Sitting cross-legged at the dining room table, Katie Noyed truly looks content. No wonder. This summer, the US native who now resides in Denmark with her husband visited her family in the States after a year-and-a-half-long separation. "With technology, you can keep in touch in other ways. But it's tough. You're getting older - your family is getting older. You're missing life's moments." A trade-off every traveller and explorer understands well.
TRAVELLING ROOTS After all, travelling seems to be in Katie's blood. Her dad lived in Japan for three years and would sometimes even speak Japanese to her as a baby. Her mom spent time in Africa, and her grandma? A huge traveller, too. "I had that kind of influence - you should go out and explore, you should see the world. So from all angles, people were saying: go," remembers Katie. And so, instead of going off to study journalism, she ended up picking potential countries for a gap year with Rotary International. "We had a big country fair with people representing the countries. I was a teenage girl, and the Danish guy was really cute," laughs Katie about her reasoning to choose Denmark as one of her spots. As fate would have it, that's where she ended up. Strangely, she did not experience cultural shock. Coming from Minnesota with the largest population of Norwegian Americans, Danish country and people looked similar. The only difference? Language, of course. "I thought I could either make friends or learn Danish. For whatever reason, I couldn't do both in my head." As always, she chose the connections and made life-long

friends. "I loved Denmark so much. But my student visa was only for a year. The plan was always to go back to the U.S." So she returned to the US and started studying Social Science. But Denmark wasn't done with her.
A DANISH LOVE Once, in a Chicago bar, a group of guys approached her and asked her a strange question - hey, have you ever met a Dane? Needless to say, she was excited to reconnect with her host country. "I really hit it off with Simon, my now-husband. We spent the whole night sharing stories. The next day, we went on an all-day date. It was just so bizarre: I was in Chicago only for a weekend, and he was travelling in the US for a couple of weeks," Katie smiles as she looks back. As chance as the meeting was, their paths still crossed, and the rest was history. Even when Simon moved to Dubai for work, Katie went to visit him, fell in love with the city and suddenly, the plan was to move there after graduation. "It was a strange experience; we had never even lived in the same city, only vacationed together. But I moved there after my undergrad, and it worked out." There was still a contingency plan, though. "I still had a return ticket, in case it wouldn't," she laughs.
SETTLING INTO DENMARK - PART 2 Luckily, there was no need for it, and after an exciting stay in Dubai where Katie worked as an English teacher, the couple moved to Denmark. But while for her husband, it was a smooth return to his family, friends, and job, for Katie, it felt like a crash landing. After living in diverse Dubai, she struggled to find an international community in

Roskilde. "I just wasn't able to tap into it despite going to quite a few meetings," shrugs Katie. Without studies, connections, and out of luck while searching for a job, Katie felt without purpose. So to help her settle in Denmark, they applied for family reunification. "Essentially, this puts your life on hold. It could be up to 10 months of waiting time when you're not allowed to work, you're not allowed to volunteer, the only thing you can do is take Danish classes." Katie found herself in a strange, liminal state where she was neither here nor there. "For the first time, I really felt unwanted in society. I felt like my identity was taken away."
KATIE, THE VOLUNTEER During her undergraduate studies, she volunteered all the time. The closest to her heart was her work with the National Eating Disorder Association, advocating about an issue that not many people know about - or don't want to know about. She also volunteered in a homeless shelter and worked on education projects for children with her Rotary Club. For Katie, volunteering has always been one of the best things to get her out of her own head and put things into perspective. "It puts you in your place a little bit. Helps you understand there's more to life - but also that you're not at a higher level because you are the one helping."
MOUNTING THE CHRISTIANIA BIKE Nothing lasts forever, though, and Katie's unwanted inactivity came to an end. Her way of moving forward? Enrolling into a Master's programme in Global Refugee Studies. Going to school, learning, and meeting internationals helped her gain her footing in Denmark. However, her own immigration experience - in fact, all of her traveller XP points - came in handy as it fueled her interest in migration and mobility studies. "In Dubai, where your passport sort of dictates the type of job you will hold, I got to work with students from all over the world. To hear the migration stories of their families was fascinating to me. I'm interested in learning why states are preventing individuals from moving freely. Why are there expats, immigrants, and refugees, each with a different connotation?" This fall, she will do it in a genuinely hands-on - not to mention Danish way. Interning for Kompasset five days a week, an organisation that helps homeless migrants will place her on the streets of Copenhagen, atop a Christiania bike for 3 of those days, with soup and hot beverages. She will support the outreach team at the centre in the remaining 2 days, offering legal services or advice.

CLASH WITH A CONTENT CULTURE Working with people from around the world again - and in a country that is not her own - will bring Katie new chances for self-development through learning about new cultures. But if there is a clash between her and her husband's culture, it's usually caused by Katie's need to always self-improve. "In the US, we are insatiable. We want the next thing - the next degree, the next best car. In Denmark, I really respect the way people can stop and enjoy what they have and be in the moment." Along with her drive for self-improvement, independence has always been a big part of Katie's character: from a leadership role as a charity walk founder and coordinator with the National Eating Disorder Association to choosing to go against the grain and take a gap year. "Actually, by being in Denmark, I became a little more dependent on my husband. It's his country. He's fluent in the language. When we were in Dubai, we had a more level playing field. It was new to both of us. If we come to the US in the future, I will be the one in charge. With relationships, it's give and take."

a city in the Danish countryside, Katie, coming from the sprawling United States, sees Roskilde more as a suburb of Copenhagen. "I guess this is such a tiny country that Roskilde is a city by itself," laughs Katie. Be as it may, especially during corona times, Roskilde was a fine choice for the amount of nature it has to offer. "I went on a lot of runs and walks, and I got to know the area really well. But at the same time, I love being in Copenhagen - there's a lot of excitement, opportunities and internationals. In larger cities, you can just connect with people of all backgrounds," Katie thinks. Even though she also discovered a small community in Roskilde, Katie met international friends through her studies in Copenhagen. But there are expats in Denmark who did not relocate to a major city. "You have to keep moving forward. I had a pity party as well. That doesn't help. It's only hurting yourself. But when you do find that sense of community, that's what makes a difference." But while trying to find it, Katie did not want to lose herself. She is on a mission to absorb the best parts and filter out those that don't suit her, never losing sight of where she's going or where she came from. For this, she took a friend's advice. "The bravest thing you can do in this country is to be yourself. And that's true."
A COLOURFUL PODCAST With the podcast she founded in July last year, that is precisely what she is doing. Life with Color covers the intersection between eating disorders and different societies because treatment in the United States will differ from treatment in the Middle East or Denmark. Along with professionals who speak about nutrition, body image, or the brain chemistry behind eating disorders, she invites people who have struggled with an eating disorder. "They can share their recovery stories, what their treatment experience was like, and the pressures they felt within their society," explains Katie. The decision to start the podcast was deeply personal. An eating disorder is something Katie struggled with for years herself. As a competitive dancer and a huge perfectionist, she ticked off every single box. "It is a very complicated illness. If you just think about the number of times you eat per day. All of those are stressful times. When you're sick, it's as if this dull fog takes over. As if there is no colour in life." Even though eating disorders are a lifelong journey, her podcast is named after life in recovery - about the return of colour into her life. She sought out treatment during her freshman year of college. She calls it the best decision she has ever made. She also calls herself lucky. "Not everyone is believed when they
While growing up, Katie resembled Sandra Bullock's character in Miss Congeniality - a big pageant sceptic - more than a beauty queen. But going to college in the States is expensive, and the Miss America Organisation is one of the largest scholarship providers for women. Even though they are often dismissed, all pageants should not be painted with a broad stroke. "The calibre of women who compete in this programme is quite high," says Katie. The organisation already cut out swimsuits and evening gowns. Instead, an extensive interview process and public speaking culminate with a TED talk about the contestants' community service project. When starting, Katie immediately knew what she wanted her focus to be. "With my eating disorder experience, I knew I could help people. I knew how to use my story to connect with others and make the topic less stigmatised." But her struggle with the illness was a significant consideration before entering the competition. Would it be triggering? Quite the contrary. "It was really healing because I got to speak out. I got to talk to the other girls if they were doing unhealthy things."
COMING FULL CIRCLE Katie has always found herself at the centre of a community. That's why the lonely beginning in Denmark hit her so hard. Until she started picking up The International and joined the team as a Social Media Ambassador. "I saw stories of people like us. They were overcoming challenges, moving forward even if facing adversity. I felt really connected to the paper. It's fun to be part of this international team and come full circle - being on the cover is just really crazy." Crazy or not, Katie still hopes her story can help other people too. And if her track record of doing just that has anything to say about it, it is a safe bet. THE-INTL * Katie's photoshoot was shot on location at RAGNAROCKS iconic golden building. INTERNATIONAL DAY IN SEPTEMBER
STARTING A NEW school
is always exciting but can also be scary for children. At North Zealand International School (NIS), we have a tried and tested system to help our learners feel comfortable and secure as soon as possible. On the first morning, as new parents gather with all the other parents to meet each other over a cup of coffee, our new learners are welcomed into their classes to meet their teacher and classmates. Each new learner is assigned a buddy or two who know the school well. The buddies will be their guide and show them where to go and what to do. Our dedicated teachers are experienced at integrating new learners with ice breakers and fun team building activities at the beginning of term and throughout the year. As the year progresses, there is much group work as the International Primary Curriculum (IPC) encourages collaboration and teamwork. As a result, new learners can meet lots of new classmates and develop vital skills while studying exciting learning-focused units like Fairgrounds or Chocolate. Trips are another way we enhance integration. Each class visits a field centre in Kagerup, Gribskov, for an overnight team-building trip in the autumn. This beautiful site has accommodation, fields and playgrounds to explore. There’s plenty of space for orienteering and other physical activities. In the evenings, there’s usually a movie night. This fantastic trip is where friendships are created! Astrid, a mum from Portugal, said, “We chose NIS because when we searched online, the Parents Association at this school stood out as being really active, and we really wanted that close-knit community for our children and us. It hasn’t disappointed.”
WELCOMING PARENTS TOO! As new learners meet their new classmates on the first morning, parents can make new connections too. The class parent representatives mix and mingle to introduce new parents to other parents in their children’s class. Over the first few days, the school sends communications about upcoming events through the online learning and communication platform, and the parent group ensures all new families are aware of welcome events and social gatherings

The first fun school-wide event for families is happening in September. Families group together by nationality or interest into countries and share insights into their culture and traditions during International Day. Each country offers foods to try and games to play. The children are given passports to ‘travel’ to many countries to ask questions and taste the local cuisine. The India table is always popular with amazing curries and sweets to try. International day is a great way for parents to make good friends from home or the other 50 nationalities represented at NIS. Each International day has a theme from the UN sustainability goals, and the schoolwide theme in focus this year is Life on Land. The games and displays explain the issues and nurture curiosity into all we can do to think globally and act locally. THE-INTL

INTEGRATING SECONDARY STUDENTS With secondary students becoming more independent, the role of the NIS class teacher becomes key to managing the integration of new students to join lots of activities. WHEN YOU ARRIVE in Denmark or another new country, there is so much excitement and many new things to learn. When you return, you generally know the systems and have friends and family there, which is great, especially after a long time away, but the sense of difference is absent.
WHY WE LEFT DENMARK We always planned to return home, so it was more a matter of when. We have a house in the UK, close family ties and established friendships groups. The main reason was so our son could start secondary school with everyone else. Joining an international school at any point is easy because it’s a welcoming environment; we feel that joining a ‘normal’ school after it begins can be more challenging as friendships will be set. Once we made this decision, we had interesting conversations with friends who had lived as expats as children. They said moving countries halfway through school as children had been the most challenging part for them.
THOSE WHO WENT BEFORE… To see how friends had fared with returning home, I canvassed mums I know in Denmark who have returned home. Covid has made the transition much harder. The process and arrival have added extra layers of complexity to a process with so many moving parts. Most families have moved to countries with higher infection levels, and settling during this time has been challenging. One mum said, “We were welcomed home with open arms. All our problems have been Covid related.” Denmark has handled the corona crisis very well, and I think foreign nationals in Denmark have been glad to be here.
WHY THE CHOICE TO GO IS IMPORTANT When I spoke with those who returned home to various countries, a pattern began to immerge. Those who had made a positive choice to return home had generally had a much better transition than those who had left for other reasons. For example, if people had left because of a loss of job or end of a contract, they seemed to struggle more - when you think about this, it does make sense. On the other hand, if I have made an active decision to do something, the path becomes smoother because I can plan more and ease the transition. Our planning involved an 11-page document hoping it would make our transition more manageable and smoother.
NOT MY FIRST TIME This is not my first time experiencing reverse culture shock. We noticed cultural differences after arriving in Denmark, so I fully expected it returning home. Five years is a long time, and I will be faced with many changes. In my twenties, I lived in Japan; in those days, I was single with no commitments and so returning home just meant packing a box, a few suitcases and getting on a plane. My job helped me with the paperwork, and it was all very straightforward. My concerns in those days were very different to now. Japan is exceedingly organised, and I wondered about how I would find a less organised country. I had a heated toilet seat in my flat in Japan, which heated

the room (I lived in the north, where they have lots of snow). I loved that seat and wondered how I’d cope without it! Once a week, I went to Karaoke boxes with my friends, which was brilliant fun, so I wondered how people entertained themselves without them. Henry Hall's 'Teddy Bears' Picnic' 1932 - words could not ring truer than they do today with a huge surge of parents seeking to have their young educated in forest schools, 'Naturbørnehave' or 'Skovbørnehave' as they are referred to in Danish.
ORIGINS The concept of the outside school originated in Sweden in the 1950s but quickly spread to Denmark. The first forest school in Denmark was said to have been started by Ella Flautau in 1952. She pioneered a daycare, where she met with neighbouring mothers who walked their small children in the local forest. In essence, she started up 'the Walking Kindergarten'. The idea of outdoor schooling flourished, and now there are more than 500 schools all over Denmark; many have long waiting lists!
are no constraints, only freedom of choice, time to explore, experiment, make mistakes and learn for oneself. The learning situation allows for child-centred, individualised learning whilst also encouraging group co-operation and social interaction.
WHAT IS A FOREST SCHOOL?
THE RESEARCH
A forest school caters for children from the age of 3 up to 6, who spend a large proportion of time, if not all, outside in the elements each day throughout the year. It can be that the school is located next to a forest, and it is used as the learning hub. It may also be such that there is no actual solid building, but the school is a collection of tent-like structures, wooden shelters, and an outside toilet! In fact, one of the reasons forest schools emerged was the lack of buildings to house students. In the Copenhagen area, young people are bussed out of their city kindergarten to their forest learning environment; they are known as 'udflytterbørnehave'.
A recent study by Erik Mygind, a Teaching Associate Professor at the University of Copenhagen's Forest and Landscape College, substantiates these arguments. His four-year research project involved 18 schools and 1,013 children in 46 classes. He investigated whether an 'Udeskole', an outside learning environment with regular instruction throughout the year, impacted children's psychological well-being, motivation, and social relationships. The study unveiled that outdoor learning does have a positive impact. These findings are similar to those of a 13-month Swedish study that revealed that forest school students have higher concentration levels, 25% fewer days off school with sickness, and can sustain engagement for longer time periods. Roskilde University researchers also echoed that nature school students are more innovative.
THE PHILOSOPHY The cornerstone of an outdoor, nature teaching environment allows very young inquisitive and forming minds to connect with the living world around them. As a result, students can co-exist and enjoy the outdoors and freedom, investigate the environment first-hand using sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell, and establish a relationship with it.

THE DOWNSIDES Despite all the glowing reports, it is essential to respect that the forest school is not for all children or a hit with all parents. Some children are not suited or do not enjoy very long periods outside. The harshness of the elements do not compliment their temperament that is better orientated to a structured and secure inside environment. Moreover, some parents feel that a more traditional classroom poses fewer risks regarding health and hygiene or physical safety than a nature school. Moreover, regular schooling also provides better foundations for a child's educational pathway.
ACADEMIC PATHWAYS A nature school is a unique learning experience that provides parents with an alternative option that is not so widely available in all parts of the world. But, ultimately, the best fit for an individual child that matters most is to secure a positive entrance into education that leads to a lifelong love of learning. THE-INTL

ON 30 AUGUST, the grassroots movement #enmillionstemmer (#OneMillionVoices) sent an appeal for help to the United Nations, the European Council, and Amnesty International. The movement fights for fair justice for people with disabilities, and their main objective is to fight for better conditions for persons with disabilities and their families and fight against the violation of human rights of this, the largest minority group in Denmark. The movement's appeal to the world is supported by several renowned Danish civil rights attorneys and professors, FOA (The Danish Trade Union for Public Employees), and Danske Handicaporganisationer (Disabled People's Organisations Denmark). #enmillionstemmer currently has over 31.000 members and was established by a group of parents who had to fight to get assistance for their children with disabilities. The movement began due to political and municipal neglect of the management of disability services, the quality of which has seen a steady decline since a sizeable structural reform of the Danish public sector in 2007. Since 2016, it has been possible for the public to view the quality of the management of disability services in their local municipality. This has been possible thanks to public access to information regarding several decisions for disability services that are appealed in each municipality. Many of these cases are overturned, which can be seen here: https://sm.dk/danmarkskort Since this information became available in 2016, it has shown that the quality of the management of disability services continues to deteriorate. Municipality management of disability services has reached such a low that rulings favour the citizen in approximately half of the disability cases that are appealed. For example, in 2020, in Odsherred municipality, rulings fell in favour of the citizen in 67% of appeals regarding decisions in children with disabilities. The same with 60% of appeals in the area of adults with disabilities. Despite the seriousness of disability services and the subsequent significant ramifications for Denmark as a society and socio-economically, the area of disability services and policy remain under-prioritised, both politically and financially. An example of this was on 3 June 2021 when a majority of the Danish Parliament voted against incorporating the UN Disability Convention into Danish law. In the autumn of 2020, #enmillionstemmer collected almost 500 testimonies from persons with disabilities and their families. This illustrated how every erroneous decision and ruling can have severe and long-term con-

In the National Council of Appeal, we have won in 30 out of the 32 cases." - Parents of a young man with physical and mental disabilities "When my severely disabled daughter turned 18, the municipality tried to send her to a residential home, despite her clear desire to continue living at our home. When the municipality did not succeed, they reduced her total vital assistance by 80%, WITHOUT justification." - Parents of a daughter with multiple disabilities "The visitator (red. consultant or social worker who decides if the person can be granted assistance) came unannounced and went into my home along with the home care nurse. She went with me in the shower. Everything took place without an independent assessor, a family member or a support person. This took place without anyone hav-
ing told me what was going to happen and without my consent. A stranger literally came in from the street and took a shower with me." - Adult with 18 different diagnoses who is a wheelchair user Despite the movement's repeated inquiries to politicians and the Danish government, the extent and gravity of the conditions for people with disabilities continue to be ignored, with no real prospect for improvements. The current situation has reached a point that #enmillionstemmer has decided to appeal for help from international authorities, hoping that their voices will be heard. watched movies or read books where people going through turmoil take a vacation, unearth facts about themselves and come to shocking but very grounding realisations. One such example is Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert. The author going through a divorce, a crushing depression, and a failed love, embarks on the journey of her lifetime, spending a year in three different countries and eventually making her way back to her authentic self. Witnessing these self-discoveries through travel has always made me question this magical quality of the mere act of going to another place that makes it so potent, so enchanting that Michael Crichton writes in his autobiography, Travels. "Often I feel I go to some distant region of the world to be reminded of who I really am…. Stripped of your ordinary surroundings, friends, daily routines, and a refrigerator full of your food… you are forced into direct experience. Such direct experience inevitably makes you aware of who it is that is having the experience. That's not always comfortable, but it is always invigorating." I understand this is not a simple task. You cannot make an authentic version of yourself appear from thin air with a swish of a wand with a magical phrase. It takes time. Research suggests that because travelling and/or living in a new setting, we experience enhanced creativity; attempting to adapt to a new environment gives us self-concept clarity and helps us examine ourselves, our lives, and our culture from a distance to see better. We, Homo Sapiens, are creatures of habit. We love the known, and we crave what's familiar. Moving to new places, experiencing new cultures, and being in different surroundings strips us of life's comfortable trappings and reduces the anxiety of newness. We strive to learn and adapt to have our beloved state of comfortable fa-

miliarity, and in the process of doing so, we reflect on parts of our identity and question if they truly define who we are or merely reflect our cultural upbringing. Growing up, we are surrounded by people who behave, primarily, in similar ways, and we don't feel compelled to question if the norms and values of our culture coincide with our personal beliefs. However, when we travel, we interact with novel cultures that allow us to reengage with our beliefs, which are then either strengthened or discarded. Research suggests that with clarity of who we are, we are better at building sound social relationships and have improved chances of making better career decisions. In addition, travelling also helps us feel relaxed and rejuvenated. Connecting with different cultures broadens our horizons and gets us real-life education. With a less worried brain, we have more space for new ideas and creativity. This happens because when we plan or
take a vacation, we feel excited. Our bodies release happy hormones, and cortisol levels decrease, which is the hormone released when stressed. Travelling, in this regard, can be therapeutic*. In conclusion, even without the magic words, travelling does have a magical impact on our lives. It enriches our lives and fills us with joy. It helps us have a new lens to look at the world in a different light. It can help us be more tolerant, more empathetic and reconnect with our original selves. I
IN 1997 I moved to Aarhus, Denmark, after graduating as an interpreter (Dutch-English-Danish) in Belgium. My plan was to stay two semesters in Denmark, improve my Danish and then move back. However, I never got to pack my bags again as I got a job. So it was never a deliberate decision to stay - life just happened, and I'm still here. Over the years, I have learned that clubs and associations are the cornerstone of Danish society and THE way to get to know Danes. In Denmark, there are more than 100,000 volunteer organisations. Clubs and associations go hand-in-hand with volunteering, as they simply cannot exist without each other. Volunteers can sit on the board, act as coaches, teachers, organisers, or those who just bake a cake once in a while. My Danish husband and I have been volunteering in different organisations over the years. This summer, I was emersed in the ultimate volunteer-driven experience – and I loved it! Our entire family – my husband Fredrik, 10-year-old Ella and 5-year-old Ida and myself – spent a week on the island of Tunø for the annual Tunø Camp. Tunø is a 3.52 km² car-free Danish island between Samsø and Jutland. It is located about 8 km from Jutland and has 118 inhabitants. Tunø Camp is an annual joint event arranged by the dinghy departments in Århus Sejlklub, Kaløvig Bådelaug, Egå Sejlklub and Solbjerg Sejlklub. This year the camp could celebrate its 40th anniversary! The camp's primary purpose is to give new and experienced youth sailors the opportunity to have a lot of sailing lessons on the water and an enjoyable time with other sailors across age, abilities, and club membership. As our 10-year-old daughter Ella takes sailing classes in the dinghy type called Optimist and being ardent sailors ourselves, we all decided that a week of our summer holidays would be dedicated to participating in the camp. We were informed that we would have to actively participate in getting tasks done, but we didn't really know what to expect. The past year a small volunteer group with representatives from the different sailing clubs has organised the entire camp. This year 120 adults and children signed up for a week of fun. It was great to witness how a 100% parent-run camp runs smoothly when all adults pull together. No matter how big or small the task, it got done with a smile on their faces. Preparing food for 120 people, getting the sailors safely on the water, doing dishes,

playing games with the sailors' siblings who stayed on land, and many other tasks had to be taken care of daily. The only reward being happy kids and getting to know people across the sailing clubs. But what a reward it is to be part of a true community and surrounded by happy people. Who knew that prepping breakfast for 120 people at 6:15 in the morning during the holidays could be that rewarding. When we came home after a week, we were all filled with new experiences and friendships. There is no doubt about it – we will be back next year! My advice to all readers is: Find an activity of your interest, sign up in a local club or association and become part of the volunteer team. Just a small task such as washing jerseys or baking a cake is valuable for the club, and just wait and see how doors open to new Danish connections. THE-INTL

WHEN CHOOSING A good fit university, there are multiple aspects to consider, but beyond academics, how do you see yourself fitting into the student community? Joining a student organisation is an ideal way to engage! These can be found at any institution, large or small, but the offerings and level of involvement will vary. Nanna Larsson is currently studying Business Administration & Sociology at Copenhagen Business School (CBS), and she has truly captured the essence of being a student leader. Nanna is originally from Denmark but has lived in the US, Scotland, France, and Switzerland. Her ambitious nature and involvement in the CBS community are commendable. Through a recent interview, Nanna shares a few CBS initiatives while highlighting her recent achievements.
STUDENT ENGAGEMENT AT CBS Nanna is proud to be part of a community that strongly encourages student engagement, fellow students' well-being, and quality of studies. She took the initiative to join the BA & Sociology Union Board, where she manages multiple events, engaging students socially and academically. Nanna is passionate about constantly being in motion, so to broaden her horizon and expand her professional network, she also joined MarketingLab as an Event Manager. While coordinating events with various organisations, she equips students with knowledge and experience, extending beyond a traditional curriculum. MarketingLab has relations with local and global companies, providing students with industry insights, practical skills, and competencies while bridging the gap between theory and practice. Nanna's team connects students with industry leaders, introducing them to the job market. She thrives on being part of an organisation run by passionate, like-minded peers that connect students to 'the real world'.
STUDENT CITIZENSHIP POINTS Nanna also mentions that at CBS, Student Citizenship Points are essential if students want to pursue a university exchange in the fifth semester. For each organisation or activity students participate in, student citizenship improves with points that can only be obtained during the first two semesters. In addition, CBS and partner universities rely heavily on student engagement, so nominated candidates with high points will be advantageous to pursue an exchange.
STUDENT ADVICE Nanna shares some final takeaways for future university students. ENGAGE YOURSELF: Join a student organisation and take the opportunity to get involved in the community. There is no need to start big. It is not a 'go big or go home thing'- follow your pas-

We learn together and from each other in an environment that encourages growth, which may increase your eligibility for the job market. TAKE INITIATIVE: If there was one thing I learned when starting university, it was the fact that nothing is handed to you on a silver platter – this is how 'the real world' works. DO YOU REMEMBER your first payslip in Denmark? The tax you paid on your salary? Well, most of that money went into the local budget. Who decides on how to use the local budget? The local council. Depending on the municipality you live in, you pay a certain level of "kommuneskat" (municipality tax) on your income (it can be between 22,5% and 27,8%). Who decides on the municipality tax percentage? You guessed it right, the local council. Unlike most countries in the world, the local government in Denmark has tremendous power over your daily life. Why? Because Danish democracy is about making decisions on behalf of citizens and with as many people involved as possible. As the campaign leader of a local candidate in 2012, I had the chance to observe and understand the power of the local council. Even more so, when three ideas we scribbled down one evening became a reality a year later. That experience confirmed to me that Danish local politics favour ideas, organisations and candidates who aren't afraid to lobby for them. This means that every time the local budget is discussed, some groups in society will win while others will lose. The groups that organised and ensured they have a representative in the local council will be on the winning side. There can be between 9 and 31 local council members, depending on the municipality's population size and the local council decision (except Copenhagen, which has 55). A local councilman is a part-time representative (that does this work alongside their job) who specialises (usually) in two areas of local competence. Among the local councilmen, there are a few that are fulltime politicians (the mayor "borgmester" and the 3 to 6 alderman "rådman"). In most cases, the local councilmen with the most personal votes obtain the full-time positions. The local council is responsible for the care your children receive from "vuggestue" to the end of "folkeskole", care your grandparents receive in the retirement

IN SOME WAYS, a mindful moment is somewhat similar to the Danes’ hygge. It’s a state of mind - you can find it anywhere, alone or with anyone, anytime. A mindful moment can be appreciating the beauty of a blooming flower, savouring the scoop of ice cream or that cup of coffee. Mindfulness and mindful moments are very personal, and they are unique to all of us because it is a mentality that weaves into our lifestyle that means something to us. The key is to be fully aware of this particular moment that has your attention, that is your mindful moment. As an international living in Denmark, sometimes we are so consumed with daily life and all sorts of stress, and we forgot to look after ourselves and what we enjoy. Remembering this is the first step. Taking a moment out of all the chaos in life is healthy. We need to ask ourselves, what do we enjoy doing? How do we relax? That is usually an excellent place to start.

#5 Switch off your phone and computer during meals. Eliminate distractions. Focus on your food- how do they taste? What’s the texture and temperature? Savour every bite. Try to have a silent meal once a week, so easy to do when you choose to have one meal alone, but as a family or a group, doing that together can be fun.

Do all the grocery shopping before that and focus on the quality time you share with your child. We can all easily incorporate these simple ideas into our daily lives. However, finding our ground and calmness in life needs practice, and we hold the ultimate power to pull ourselves back to the anchor that keeps us steadfast in any storm we may face. Being in an unfamiliar environment for many of us expats, making an effort and time to practice mindfulness, and finding our mindful moments every day will support us in this unknown yet exciting journey. TOGETHER WITH SWEDEN, Denmark is an extremely mature e-commerce market. Both countries lead the way within the Nordic and Baltic regions. However, the top five players in the Danish top ten are not Danish companies. The Danish market for e-commerce is characterised as 98% - meaning that Internet penetration is extremely high and, as such a perfect basis for e-commerce, has increased in nearly all service sectors. Although the pandemic explains the increase in the use of e-commerce services, this trend is expected to become part of a new normal post-pandemic. The e-commerce percentages in this article are based on 2018 official Danish trade figures. Zalando seems to be the biggest online store in Denmark and Europe’s largest online platform for fashion representing 3.4% of all e-commerce. Its over 4000 brands are sold in 20 countries and it is acclaimed as the most innovative fashion platform in Europe. In addition, Zalando and Sephora, the world’s leading omnichannel prestige beauty retailer, announced a strategic partnership recently to create the ultimate online prestige beauty destination for millions of Zalando customers and that they would reinvent how they shop beauty online. The American global platform Amazon represented 2% of Danish e-commerce trade. Nearly 2 million small and medium-sized enterprises worldwide use the Amazon platform to sell their products, which makes up approx. 60% of Amazon’s massive retail business. They have such a large commercial footprint that they can maintain a next day delivery on many of the products in their online stores. Amazon is closely followed by H&M (Hennes & Mauritz AB) at 1.9% - a Swedish giant selling clothes since 1947 in Sweden and since 1967 in Denmark. The H&M Group has nearly 5.000 outlets in 73 countries, where they seek to sell quality clothes at affordable prices. Wish.com was next in line at 1.8% - an

The next, Nemlig.com, was noted for 1.3% of trade in 2018. This Danish player has experienced massive growth during the pandemic and may well be much high-

Over 5.77 million people are living in Denmark, of which 98 percent use the Internet. Data from 2019 Statistics show that 86 percent of all Internet users shopped online the year before in Denmark. The average annual spending per online shopper in Denmark is now EUR 3,567 and increasing. Furthermore, eMarketer’s Worldwide Mobile forecast report showed that Denmark has the highest smartphone penetration rate globally at 77%. A 2020 study shows Dankort to be by far the most popular payment method in Denmark. Dankort is the national debit card of Denmark and functions as a credit card abroad. Another popular payment method in Denmark is MobilePay, a mobile payment solution by Danske Bank that is also being offered in Finland and Norway. Research from Nets shows that cards are the most popular payment method in Denmark (62 percent), followed by MobilePay (25%) and PayPal (6%). Cards are popular across all ages, but especially among the older generations. E-commerce in Denmark was worth EUR 19.5 billion in 2019 and is expected to be worth significantly more than EUR 22 billion by the end of 2021. THE-INTL

DID YOU KNOW that proper hygiene and grooming will keep your pet comfortable and healthy? While you might have a pet that doesn't need to go to the groomer for regular baths or haircuts, your pet still needs basic care like brushing and nail trimming.
TRIMMING YOUR PET'S NAILS Did you know that trimming your pet's nails can help prevent musculoskeletal abnormalities? When your pet's nails get long, they can push the nail up and into the nail bed. This adds extra stress and strain on the toes, and it can be very uncomfortable. Over time, the nail can start to spiral or even grow into the paw pad. This can be incredibly painful and also contribute to severe infections, often necessitating antibiotics and pain-relieving medications. The longer you wait to have your furry friend's nails trimmed, the greater the chance of the experience being uncomfortable. They may need more frequent nail trimmings because the blood vessel found within each nail may be further into the nail, which can be painful if it is clipped, not to mention potentially lead to bleeding that can be difficult to control.
BRUSHING YOUR PET'S TEETH One of the most common disease problems seen by veterinarians is periodontal disease. In addition to being a painful condition, periodontal disease may contribute to teeth becoming loose and falling out. Tooth root abscesses may occur as well. Brushing your dog or cat's teeth regularly is a great way to help prevent periodontal disease and keep the teeth as healthy as possible. There are a variety of tools you can use to help clean your pet's teeth. Start with a toothpaste designed for pets, many of which are enzymatic and help clean the teeth even if you can't get a good brushing motion going while your pet tries to eat the toothpaste.

While you can't prevent every possible ear infection, cleaning your pet's ears regularly can help minimize the risk of some cases developing. Keep in mind that some pets need little more than occasionally having their ears gently wiped out with a cotton ball. However, if your pet is prone to ear infections, they might need more regular cleanings. Your veterinarian can likely make a recommendation, such as a ceruminolytic product, which helps break up ear wax for easier removal. You will generally want to avoid products with rubbing alcohol or hydrogen peroxide as they can sting and even potentially contribute to inflammation within the ear canals.
When cleaning your pet's ears, you'll want to avoid using cotton swabs, as they can cause trauma to the ear canal, even pushing debris further into the canal where it might become impacted or pierce the eardrum. Instead, use cotton balls or gauze squares. In addition, the wax buildup can set the scene for an ear infection to develop, as warm and moist environments can be a great place for yeast and bacteria to proliferate. While many pets will let you take care of these regular grooming needs at home, some pets are anxious or wriggly, making it hard for them to get the care they need. You should discuss these concerns with your veterinarian if a mild sedative or calming product might make it easier for them (and you) to get the job done.
