The Langley School Report on Philanthropy 2021-2022
Our Mission
We believe that each child’s potential is boundless and every child can act with integrity, generosity, and consideration for others. We reach across multiple disciplines to discover, amplify, and embrace the talents of every child, every day. By nurturing, supporting, and academically challenging our students, our inclusive community builds quietly confident, independent thinkers who flourish as learners and individuals.

Report on Philanthropy 2021-2022
Dear Langley Friends,
I am so proud of all that we accomplished together during the 2021-2022 academic year, and am appreciative of the warm welcome I received from the entire Langley community during my first full year as head of school. Whether popping into classrooms, attending student performances, meeting with parents, or interacting with faculty and staff, I have thoroughly enjoyed learning about Langley’s many wonderful traditions, programs, and activities. And it’s been so much fun getting to know the people who make up our amazing community, both past and present.
Following a long period of pandemic restrictions, it was great to welcome parent volunteers back to campus in person in 2021-2022. Their joyful spirit of volunteerism helped create a warm, welcoming environment and brought our events and traditions back to life.
It is the support of our parent body that makes Langley such a special
place. From organizing a fabulous appreciation luncheon for faculty and staff, to running stations at Field Day, to donating or bidding on items at our spring auction, to supporting our Next Generation Campaign, our parents demonstrate their deep commitment to Langley in so many ways and I am so grateful.
It is thanks to the generosity of our current parents, along with many alumni families, grandparents, and friends, that our current academic year is off to such an amazing start. In addition to celebrating Langley’s 80th birthday this fall, we also opened our wonderful new Crossroads Building and are in the process of developing our next strategic plan.
Sara Magner, chair of Langley’s Board of Trustees, and I were recently touring the campus with Joel Kanter, trustee emeritus and past Board chair. We were excited to show off the Crossroads Building, and Joel commented, “I can’t believe you did it!”
Twenty years ago, Joel served on the Facilities Committee that developed our campus master plan. He mentioned that they were dreaming big, but not necessarily assuming their ideas would come to fruition. Today, we have accomplished all they envisioned and more, and I can’t wait to see what ambitious and bold goals we set for ourselves in our next strategic plan.
Thank you again for your support and for the role you play in ensuring Langley continues to thrive now and in the future.
Warmly,
Michele Claeys

The Langley Fund
provides critical support that allows us to go beyond what tuition affords and further invest in programs and priorities that create an exceptional educational experience. The Langley Fund bolsters all aspects of the Langley experience, including:
Tuition Assistance
Langley awarded nearly $2.1 million in tuition assistance during the 2021-2022 academic year, with an average award of 73 percent off tuition. Eighteen percent of the student body received some level of tuition assistance.
Trips and Experiential Learning
Annual team-building, experiential trips for grades 5-8 returned in 2021-2022 and are hallmarks of a Langley education. These opportunities allow all students to immerse themselves in a different environment, build independence and leadership skills, and create strong bonds with their peers at no additional cost to families.
Program Equity and Enhancement
The Langley Fund provides for classroom materials, guest speakers, and other educational resources. Through investment in The Langley Fund, we ensure that our students and teachers have the resources necessary to excel in the classroom, on the stage, and on the athletic field.
Faculty and Staff Appreciation
In addition to the annual PALS appreciation luncheon, this year the school held multiple pop-up events to show our appreciation for our hard-working personnel. Faculty and staff were invited to attend the spring auction and Family Fun Day at no cost. PALS prepared birthday and holiday gifts for every member of the team. Enhanced faculty lounges were stocked with healthy snacks and each division held special lunches for their teams.

The Langley Fund 2021-2022
Alumni Involvement
Over the past 80 years, more than 3,000 students have graduated from Langley and have moved to distinguished high schools throughout the region. They have continued on to prestigious universities and are contributing to their communities and living out their passions in a wide variety of careers and industries. They are innovators, leaders, critical thinkers, and problem solvers. Time and again, alumni share that when they look back on what made them happy, successful adults, they credit Langley for instilling strong values and a solid foundation. We are incredibly proud of our Langley alumni and always thrilled when they return to campus to visit their teachers and meet with current students.
Alumni and their families gave generously to both The Langley Fund and the Next Generation Campaign this year, with more than 100 gifts coming from this important part of the Langley community. Our alumni also found ways to contribute beyond philanthropy during the 2021-2022 school year, including:
• Capital Weather Gang meteorologist Jason Samenow ’89 presented to fourth-grade students during their unit on weather and climate.
• Many of our alumni have distinguished careers in the sciences and participated as judges for our Middle School Science Fair, providing feedback and mentorship for current students.
• Alumni returned to celebrate during Langley’s Family Fun Day in fall 2021.
• Members of the Class of 2021 completed our inaugural freshman survey, providing valuable input on how we are preparing students for high school.

Langley’s Class of 2018 Reunion
The Next Generation Campaign
In 2019, The Langley School Board of Trustees launched The Next Generation Campaign to accomplish two major priorities:
• Expand and enhance our campus footprint with the addition of the Crossroads Building
• Grow our endowment to support innovative programs, professional development, tuition assistance, and other school initiatives
This campaign has been the most ambitious in Langley’s 80-year history, and we have raised more through this effort than in any other campaign, with a total of $14.5 million to date.
Representing the final component of our 10-year campus master plan, the 40,000-square-foot Crossroads Building – which officially opened in September 2022 – has benefited the Langley
community through the addition of new classrooms for the Primary School and fifth grade, a library and innovation center, a multipurpose space, and an outdoor courtyard.
The addition of the Crossroads Building has also allowed Langley to transform the former Primary School space into the Pirro Studios, a dedicated home for our innovative STEAM program, which features three art classrooms and a fabrication lab.

Legacy & Endowment Gifts
Legacy & Endowment
Gifts
At the start of The Next Generation Campaign, Langley's endowment was valued at $4.6 million. Through fundraising and investment success, the current endowment is valued at $10 million.
A healthier endowment reduces our dependence on tuition and allows us to increase financial aid, making Langley accessible to a wider array of talented children and enhancing the educational experience for everyone.
It also allows us to recruit and retain the best faculty and to provide them with professional development opportunities that foster a lifetime of growth, ensuring they apply the best and latest educational practices for our students.
2021-2022
Legacy Society
The Legacy Society recognizes donors who have provided for the school’s future through gifts such as bequests, trusts, or other estate gifts. These contributions will sustain the school’s tradition of excellence for years to come.

“We established an endowed fund to provide access and opportunity to those who might otherwise not be able to attend a school like The Langley School. It was very much intended to bless young learners and their families, inspire a love of learning, and enhance the Langley community.”

Spring Auction 2022
Spring Auction
Thank you to everyone who supported Langley's "Together We Thrive" spring auction on May 14, 2022. A record 340 guests attended in person at The Conrad in Washington, DC, and many others participated online, raising an incredible $550,000 in support of teacher excellence – the most in Langley’s history!
Proceeds from the event had a direct and immediate impact on the school’s ability to maintain an exceptional, diverse, and competitively compensated faculty and provide an outstanding educational experience for our students.
Special thanks to the event’s co-chairs, Aly Brokenshire and Allie Miller, and their team of volunteers for making this wonderful event possible.

Parent Involvement 2021-2022
Parent Involvement
Since Langley’s founding, parent volunteers have played a key role in the life of the school.
Langley’s volunteer Board of Trustees and its committee members devote countless hours to ensuring the long-term financial health of the school and the fulfillment of our mission.
Through the Parent Association of The Langley School (PALS), volunteers support the mission of the school and build community through a variety of events and activities.
As we returned to a more normal school year in 2021-2022 following the restrictions of the pandemic, PALS organized a number of events, including parent socials, faculty/staff appreciation events, Family Fun Day, Leopardy Quiz Night, the spring auction, and Day of Giving.
