GROW

The Langley School Spring Auction

From Our Head of School: DR. ELINOR SCULLY Although we were unable to gather for our in-person spring auction, “Watch Us Grow,” on April 18, we felt it was important to create shared moments for our community to come together during this time of uncertainty and social distancing. So we partnered with Elizabeth Crocker ’89 and Heidi Narang, the event’s co-chairs, to reimagine a new virtual format for the auction that would allow us to connect and celebrate our amazing community. I thank Elizabeth and Heidi and their committee for their creativity and flexibility as we pivoted quickly to a different way of celebrating this year’s auction while remaining sensitive to the difficult climate in which we are living. Our redesigned event consists of two parts: 1) online bidding from May 5-10 on a variety of items our auction team has acquired throughout the year and 2) a live moment

on Saturday, May 9 at 5:00 p.m. in which we can gather virtually to “Raise the Paddle” for our incredible teachers, conduct a live drawing for our raffle, and most importantly, enjoy time together as a community. Every year, I am humbled by the number of individuals and local businesses who affirm their commitment to our school through endless hours of volunteerism, donations, and sponAs you browse the pages of this catalog, sorships. Thank you to please note that our auction committee everyone involved in has spent the past year procuring these this year’s event for your items and experiences, long before the support and for your flexcoronavirus impacted our lives. We ibility in this difficult and remain hopeful for the time when our changing environment. world reopens and we can enjoy these experiences together. I look forward to seeing you virtually during our live online program on May 9 as we celebrate the Langley community with hope and optimism for better days ahead.

A Note About Our Auction Items

From Our Auction Co-Chairs: ELIZABETH CROCKER ’89 & HEIDI NARANG The theme of this year’s spring auction is “Watch Us Grow,” and we chose it because it encompasses so much of what is happening at our school right now. Not only are we watching our kids grow and seeing them embrace an inspirational growth mindset, but we are also seeing our school grow in such a positive and exciting way. Langley is both a first-class educational institution and a welcoming community committed to supporting every child, every day through the power of parent/teacher partnership. Moreover, we have all grown in this current moment of crisis as we respond to the needs of our children and of our community. Exceptional education requires phenomenal teachers, administrators, and staff. Fortunately for all of us, Langley has them in abundance. To these dedicated individuals, we say a heartfelt thank you! Langley’s continuing success

What Are Great Gathering Events? Great Gatherings are a “great” way to make new friends and connect with old friends while enjoying a fun, low-key activity, outing, or event. Come by yourself or make plans with friends to join together – a great time awaits you. Our community is stronger and more connected when we “gather” all year long! It’s all been organized for you – all you need to do is join in! “Buy a spot” for one or more Great Gathering events.

Great Gathering Cancellation Policy The health and well-being of the Langley community is at the heart of our decision-making. If a Great Gathering event is cancelled, we will work with the hosts to reschedule for a date that works with the school calendar. If you are unable to attend a rescheduled event, or if the event is cancelled, ticket purchasers have the following options: 1. DONATE your tickets to turn your ticket purchase into a contribution, and the value can be treated as a tax-deductible charitable contribution to The Langley School.* We rely on donor support to help us sustain our operations and fulfill our mission. 2. REQUEST a refund. Please contact Keely Daugherty at kdaugherty@langleyschool.org or (703) 356-1920, ext. 801 should you want to act on either of the options above. If an event is cancelled, we will assume you would like to donate your purchase unless you contact Keely to request a refund. *If you donate your purchase, not only will you be helping The Langley School continue to implement our innovative academic and social-emotional learning model, but the CARES Act allows a new $300 above-the-line charitable deduction for individual taxpayers who take the standard deduction. And, if you itemize your deductions, the CARES Act has increased the AGI charitable contribution to 100% of AGI for 2020. This means that you can get a charitable contribution deduction for the full amount of your Adjusted Gross Income.
