INSURANCE AND FINANCIAL SERVICES *** Give your grandchildren the gift of Life. When you are trying to choose just the right gift for your grandchildren, you can have a tough time sifting through the newest trends and fads. Last week it was this pop star, next week it may be a new cartoon character. On top of that, you don’t want to get something that won’t last 10 minutes out of the package. One gift that will last for many years is a life insurance policy. There are many reasons why it can be an excellent gift for your grandchild. Affordability – The younger the child’s age, the lower the premiums. Protection – Illness or injury may affect a child’s ability to purchase life insurance coverage later in life. Coverage purchased now will continue to provide protection, even if a child’s health changes, provided premiums are paid as required by the policy. Financial Security – Life insurance can be the foundation for a strong financial plan. The child may be able to borrow against the accumulated cash value (with interest charged) to pay for future expenses. While loans decrease death benefits and cash surrender values, the proceeds can be used for important expenses such as a college education or the purchase of a home Giving a gift of life insurance to your grandchild can be one of the most significant things you do during your lifetime. He or she may not understand at the time how important the gift is, but should grow to appreciate it in the future. Take the
Saturday | October 22 | 2011 guesswork out of your gift shopping. Life insurance is a gift that will last a lifetime. A Life time Corning resident, future member of Corning Lions, current member Marconi Lodge and a Brand new grandfather, Bill Pope opened his office in April of 2011 and looks forward to providing Insurance and Financial Services to the Painted Post - Corning area.

Bong emigrated from France where he was a watchmaker and jeweler. Shortly after arriving in the US, John became landscaper at “Sagamore Hill”, The Long Island summer residence of Teddy Roosevelt. In 1892, John left Long Island to join his brother and opened the jewelry store in the same location it is today. In the early 1920’s, John was joined by his son William L. Bong Sr. who was a trained watchmaker and jeweler, schooled in Philadelphia. Bill Sir’s son William Jr. was born in corning in 1913 and graduated from C F A. in 1932. Bill Jr., received a BS degree from Colgate University and an MBA from Harvard University graduating in 1938. Prior to joining his father at Bongs, Bill Jr. worked for the accounting firm of Arthur Anderson in NYC where he was head auditor for the NY Worlds Fair. She really didn’t have any interest in going, but with a little persuasion she was in the car. By the end of the third decorating class, Kristi’s instructor encouraged her to open

After a few years of designing cakes for friends and family, she gained commercial experience at a local business. It didn’t take long for her to gather enough experience and confidence to make the decision in 1999 to branch out on her own and specialize in custom wedding cakes. Kristi’s Kakes’ specialty is white chocolate fondant and curl cakes. Over the past decade, as fondant has become more popular, they have learned new techniques and found new products to enhance the fondant cake line. The most popular additions to their repertoire include hand painted fondant, overlays and detailed crimping and piping. The elegant and distinctive white chocolate curl cake is the latest addition to their custom cake line. River’s Edge Farm Finger Lakes SPCA’s Co-location & Future Home Executive Director: Vicki S. Mosgrove
7315 State Route 54, Bath, NY Phone: 607-776-3039
www.fingerlakesspca.org *** Project Catnip (our subsidized
spay/neuter clinic for felines), Wellness Clinic for companion animals and Canine Training & fun classes have been in full swing at the River’s Edge Farm. It is wonderful to see that the community has embraced these programs – all of which are providing humane education and fundamental support to the human companion-animal bond. The profound value of works to help sustain this bond is well understood by front-line workers of animal shelters. However, the true significance of these services to individual animals and our community as a whole may not be as readily apparent to the general public. Helping to assure that the humancompanion animal bond stays strong is naturally integral to our mission of animal protection, but is also tightly interconnected to protecting and helping people as well. When ties between companion-animals and humans are broken, it hurts us both. For the animals, this is when they are at the greatest risk
Saturday | October 22 | 2011 of becoming uncared for and homeless which ultimately places their very lives in real jeopardy. Although our shelter doesn’t euthanize healthy animals, euthanasia of healthy, homeless cats and dogs remains the leading cause of death of these species in the U.S. Moreover, for us humans who have an attachment with a pet, the loss or potential loss of such a bond is naturally distressing and painful- because our human quality of life is so greatly enhanced by all the relationship offers (especially the unconditional love & companionship). The community as a whole is also affected by the strength of this special relationship. Preventive efforts to preserve this mutually beneficial bond can not only help improve our quality of life and reduce the number of animals that ultimately end up in shelters or animal control facilities, but they can also help to reduce animalrelated risks to public safety and public health, calls to animal control and all the related expenses to our
Saturday | October 22 | 2011 community. The connection between animal cruelty and other violent crimes emphasizes the additional significance of these programs to our area youth and families, and again, our community as a whole. In a recent newsletter, I detailed the need for a new shelter, expanded facilities and programs and why the Farm was chosen as our current colocation and future home. In this column, I would like to answer with a resounding “Yes”- to the question that moving the animals to the River’s Edge Farm (a new facility) is a top priority! While the house and grounds at the Farm immediately lent themselves for us to be able to set-up the aforementioned vital FLSPCA programs and our administrative offices, the facilities couldn’t immediately be used as safe and comfortable living space for our animals. While we all feel the urgency to provide our orphan animal friends with new and improved housing here at the River’s Edge Farm, committees are still actively working on

LOCAL BUSINESS GUIDE construction and project funding plans. This preparation is sharply focused on the specialized and complex nature of today’s animal shelters. Today’s buildings are specially designed and engineered to provide shelter animals awaiting adoption (especially those that need a little more time to find their forever home) a healthy and stimulating environment. They also offer the human visitors and staff a welcoming and pleasant place to visit and work and to all a facility that is energy and cost efficient to run and maintain. Emphasis is also being placed on how the whole process of moving the animals can be expedited, while not compromising quality of life improvements for sheltered animals and while assuring the new facility is built efficiently and will last for many years to come. Again, please stay tuned for continued reports of progress and how you can help, as we continue to work to get the animals into the new digs they need and deserve!
Sew Pieceful Quilt Shoppe says,
“Let’s Quilt!” “A bed without a quilt is like the sky without stars!” I remember the very first time I heard this and how easily I could relate to the message. Think about it, how comforting the sky is with stars and .... The process of quilt making is SEW rewarding, SEW satisfying, SEW fulfilling, SEW calming, SEW soothing to your soul and it brings with it such a sense of accomplishment, pride and harmony, not to mention the friends you’ll make along the journey or the beautiful finished quilt you’ll create with such love and happiness. It seems to speak a language all it’s own, yet completely understood by SEW many! The real truth regarding quilting is... no matter what the size, a quilt is merely a sandwich of fabric, consisting of a top, a back and some batting in between! How YOU create YOUR sandwich is up to you, the choices are endless, there’s no right or wrong, it’s YOU! - unique and priceless. The first step in making a quilt is deciding on a pattern, then choosing the fabrics, this is my favorite! I first decide who my quilt is going to comfort, what did I want to share with my quilt, where’s my quilt going to live. It’s funny, sometimes I have no idea, I just love the fabrics and HAVE to make something beautiful with them, they actually often talk to me, then life gives me the opportunity to know where it needs to go and to
whom it belongs! It’s a perfect process and often completely out of my hands - life truly does happen. After the top is pieced, the batting is placed between the top and the back, the quilt is quilted, bound and labeled! If you have to be addicted to something, let it be quilting! It’s healthy, full of love and sharing, a wonderful self-esteem project, gratifying and enables us to comfort others! At Sew Pieceful we offer approximately 4,000 bolts of the finest 100% cottons available today, hundreds of quilting books and patterns, a plethora of tools, notions and gadgets, quilting classes for the experienced quilter and for beginners even if you’ve never picked up a sewing needle in your life! UPSCALE STEAK AND SEAFOOD RESTAURANT *** We are the first upscale steak and seafood restaurant in Corning New York's Gaffer District. We opened our doors on April 30th, 2008 and are serving the finest cuisine in the area. We will also be offering a tremendous selection of the finest wines which you will not want to miss! Our restaurant is located in a building that formerly served as a bank. Upon renovation we retained various aspects of the bank including a vault which we have converted to a "for reservations only" dining room that we think you will find most enjoyable! You will also be able to store
Saturday | October 22 | 2011 your own wine here in one of our "safety deposit boxes"! Tony’s Story: My name is Tony Ruggiero and I would like to welcome you to Tony R's Steak and Seafood. I came to this country from Libya, Africa as a legal immigrant in 1963 and I could not speak a word of English. I've been in this country for over forty years. I am happily married to Maurina and have two beautiful children, Erica and Joe. Joe is married to Terri and they have two great kids - Joey and Bella. Against everyone's advice, in 2004, I opened my first restaurant, Tanino Ristorante Italiano, which became an overnight success. I know what people like and how they wanted to be treated. I felt with that combination, how could I go wrong? The restaurant became my hobby and passion. I love seeing friends, old and new,
Saturday | October 22 | 2011 enjoying themselves. I strive for perfection and try to teach my staff that this is something that I insist upon. After four years of success with Tanino's, I decided to open Tony R's. Maurina and I wanted to create a local steakhouse with a city atmosphere. We wanted Tony R's to hold all the things we have enjoyed in restaurants across the country, while creating a place where everyone would feel comfortable and relaxed. We looked around and found the perfect spot for such a venture in Corning. It took nine months to tear apart and put back together the three buildings that hold this restaurant. A little about the building. The restaurant part of this building was built in the early 1900's as a bank. Renovating a bank made primarily of concrete and metal was no easy task. We left the original marble floor, and had it ground and polished to bring back its original shine. We also left the bank's vault as a feature of the restaurant. We removed the vault's safety deposit boxes and safes to
LOCAL BUSINESS GUIDE open up the vault for private dining. The floorboards from the foyer were made into the mantles on the downstairs fireplaces. We also replaced the center staircase, and the left front of the building. To create space for large parties, we opened and renovated the upstairs. The animal on the fireplace is a Cape Buffalo. I got it on a safari in Zimbabwe in 2006, along with the Elan and the Wildabeast. I wanted to bring them in so that everyone could admire the size of these animals. The Cape Buffalo, weighing in at over 2000 pounds fed a village for over a week. Now about the food. Even though we are a steak and seafood restaurant, my primary goal was to have a great steakhouse. Since I know people need choices, we added seafood and several of Tanino's best dishes. Remember, I know people love choices, so I wanted to have something for everyone. Not too bad for a legal immigrant.
