Nashville Recording Artist and Country Music Star Sammy Kershaw to Play at 16th Annual Jazz & Harvest Festival
Corning’s Gaffer District and Elmira Savings Bank are proud to welcome country music star Sammy Kershaw as the headliner for the 16th annual Jazz & Harvest Festival. Since his debut on the music scene in the early 90s, Kershaw has remained one of the most consistent power hitters in country music both with a chain of major hit records and sell-out touring schedules. Sammy Kershaw’s plan for country music is re-claiming its roots and recapturing the spirit that made it great: The recording studio. “Man, for someone like me who had George Jones music imprinted in my DNA before birth, the last few years have been rough as a fan of country music.” noted Kershaw candidly in a recent national interview. “Country music is not a formula it’s a music with its own soul and I’m all about saving that soul!” Kershaw’s current album "Honky Tonk Boots" promises to be a much-anticipated first step in that plan of salvation. Often referred to as the heir apparent to the legendary voice himself George Jones, Sammy Kershaw helped make the 90’s a shining decade for country music. It’s a comparison not lost on Sammy, who grew
up in the Cajun country of Louisiana on a diet of crawfish and country music. The oldest of four children, the tragic loss of his father, matured him even faster than the clubs and honky-tonks he was performing in at 12 years old. He speaks openly today of years spent battling substance abuse and addictions. “It’s not a period of my life I’m proud of but I do talk about it to encourage kids not to follow in my footsteps.” Kershaw recently noted. Helping others is a subject close to the heart that beats within what might often appear to be a tough, macho exterior. Sammy Kershaw is, in fact, a softie when the subject turns to kids. If proof were needed it stands in his hometown of Kaplan, Louisiana. There, Sammy has established the Sammy Ke r s h aw Fo u n d a t i o n . Its outreach has ex t e n d e d through donations so far of more than 2 million dollars in aid to children and child related charities. With projects that extend from granting wishes through Make A Wish Foundation to establishing camps for crippled children, the foundation exists to fulfill Sammy’s simple goal of improving the lives of children. In the course of breaking into the ranks of stardom in country music, Sammy Kershaw has made contributions to more than just the charts. His platinum albums were propelled into the records books by hits such as She Don't Know S h e ’s Beautiful, I Can’t Reach Her A ny m o r e, National Wo rking Wo m a n ’s Holiday, Love Of My Life, Cadillac Style, Don’t Go Near The Water, Haunted Heart, and many other milestones. Sammy is committed to prove that goals are made to be surpassed. His touring dates are true events in today’s country music. Life is good and Sammy has a lot to sing about. From www.sammykershaw.com The concert will be held on Saturday, September 24th on Centerway Stage at 5:00pm. Due to the nature of the venue, admission is free and seating is limited.

Guitarist, songwriter, singer Peter Novelli, based in New Orleans, works in a range of roots styles and likes to absorb diverse musical influences. Peter Novelli Band plays Louisiana roots music, a blend of bl u e s - r o ck-R&B-funk, sometimes with zydeco-cajun influences. Peter began study of violin at age 6, took up guitar at 13 after hearing a BB King record. The intensity, passion and raw emotional content of some of the blues masters (black and white, American and British) stuck in Peter’s ear and that is what drives
Friday | September 23 | 2011 him to this day. He likes to combine this feel with some of the harmonic ideas of jazz, and the relentless groove of zydeco, along with just about any cool and unusual style of music or rhythm that works. Early influences, along with B.B., were George Barnes, Mike Bloomfield, early Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck, Keith Richards, Freddie King, Guitar Slim, James Burton, Clarence W h i t e, Carl Perk i n s, T-Bone Walker, Gatemouth Brown, Roy Buchanan. Peter was also strongly influenced by some of the iconic jazz horn players. From a young age, Peter listened to and played Baton Rouge and New Orleans blues / R & B. Growing up, Peter played in S y ra c u s e, NY rock, blues and country bands. Some years back, after his band opened for Buckwheat Zydeco he began to absorb the zydeco and cajun influences, traveling to New Orleans and S.W. Louisiana, playing and jamming with some of the leaders in zydeco and cajun music including the late Roy Carrier, T. Broussard, Cedric Watson, Wilson Savoy and The Pine Leaf Boys, Walter Mouton, Steve Riley, Lisa Trahan, Christine Balfa, , etc. Peter currently resides in New Orleans. He performs around New Orleans and the Gulf region, and tours. He also performs solo guitar, does session work, composes music and guests with numerous other bands and performers.

OUR PA RT I C I PATING FINGER LAKES WINERIES Lakewood Vineyards 4024 State Rte. 14 Watkins Glen, NY 14891 (607) 535-9252 lakewoodvineyards.com In 1951, Frank Stamp, DDS decided to quit dentistry in Maryland and try his hand at fa rming. The Stamp family moved to Lakewood Farm, a run-down peach and apple orchard on the west side of Seneca Lake. The next spring they started planting grapes. The original grapes planted were primarily Labrusca and French-American Hybrid varieties, which were favored by the large wineries and grape juice companies. In the mid-80's the family diversified to add some new hybrid varieties and Vinifera plantings. The commercial grape production continued for 36 years, until 1988 when Monty (Frank's son), Beverly and their children pressed the grapes for their first vintage.
Today, with 75 acres of grapes planted, the farm is home to Lakewood Vineyards winery. The winery produces wines from all three families of grapes, offering a very diverse selection of wines. The vineyards have been maintained and expanded as the demands for varieties shift. Using a combination of cutting edge technology and traditional winemaking practices the Stamp family, working with a very dedicated staff, is committed to producing consistently high quality wines. The friendly retail room is open for tasting and sales daily. We hope you will visit us and enjoy the fruits of our labor, our wines.

Hickory Hollow had a humble beginning: as a piece of scrub lot. With a lot of planning and foresight, the project came together. Bruce and Suzanne Kendall with Ed and Theresa Wooland purchased the property with winemaker Peter Oughterson and his wife Cindy. While the building was going up Peter was hard at work at Highland Cellars crafting the new wines. The building was completed in August of 2003 and the wines were ready too.

Kings Garden Vineyards 9085 Route 414, Lodi NY 607-582-7444 info@kingsgardenvineyards.com
Kings Garden Vineyards uses grapes grown by its owners from their 16-acre vineyard located at Lodi Point, Lodi, along the eastern shore of Seneca Lake. Our current annual production ranges b e t ween 32 – 40 tons a ye a r, which equates roughly to 4,800 to 6,000 gallons or 2,000 – 2,500 cases annually. Our grapes are hand picked to allow for selective berry harvest and less foreign mater, such as leaves that contribute off flavors in the winemaking process. ruit is collected in lugs weighing about 28.5 lbs. And then emptied into 1-ton bins. 70 lugs makes one ton (for those who are
JAZZ & HARVEST counting) Red fruit is processed differently than white grapes. Whites are de-stemmed and pressed as whole clusters and pumped into a chiller tank for several days for settlement. The juice is racked into a stainless steel fermenting tank or a neutral oak barrel. Yeast and nutrients are introduced and a primary fermentation takes place until all sugars are consumed. A second fermentation, Malolactic fermentation begins, converting acids to a creamy, buttery finish. Wine is racked a final time for cold stabilization before bottling, which can take another 2-4 months. Chardonnay ages in oak for an additional 4-6 months. Red grapes are de-stemmed and lightly crushed into a 1-ton bin. Yeast and nutrient are introduced and fermentation continues until sugars are consumed. Free run juice is separated and aged in separate barrels from pressed juiced. A Malolactic fermentation begins. Red wines can age in the barrel for 18months to 4 or 5 years. Our reserve reds – Cabernet Sauvignon and Meritage blend has been aged well over 4 years in French oak. Oak barrels are used - 90% French oak barrels and 10% American oak. The age of the barrel varies considerably depending on the type of wine and barrel influences desired. A new French oak barrel can cost
between $900-1200. Aging and racking wines also varies. Currently, there are 150 barrels in the cellar. Wines for King’s Cab and Knight’s Blend will stay in the barrel for about 4 years, then racked, filtered and bottled to age again another year once in the bottle. Our first release of King’s Cab (reserve Cabernet Sauvignon) took 10 years before it was available for sale. Counting the time from when the plants were grafted, 5 years until the first harvest, 4 years in the barrel, and one year in the bottle, a very long time. Some ask, was it worth it? We sold out in three months….watched a dream become a reality….priceless.

Just three decades later, Glenora Wine Cellars would be producing 45,000 cases, hosting 85,000 visitors, and winning 75 medals at international wine competitions in one year alone. How It All Began… When the Farm Winery Act of 1976 was passed, Gene Pierce, along with Eastman B e e r s, Edward Dalry m p l e, and Howard Kimball seized the opportunity to open the winery on Seneca Lake on the site of an old sheep barn. Glenora Wine Cellars produced 5000 cases and received instant acclaim in wine circles when its initial vintage won several medals at the New York State Fair wine competition. These visionaries watched their farm winery grow to a commercial producer and win recognition in Wine Spectator magazine as one of the world’s top wineries. Today, Glenora Wine Cellars is owned by Gene Pierce and Scott Welliver, who struck a friendship at a sail boat race in the early ’70’s. Tom & Marti Macinski, Owners In 1991, we purchased historic vineyards on the east side of Seneca Lake. A long line of ve n e ra ble vintners spent years researching the quality of these lands. We followed in their footsteps by growing wines in the same historic vineyards that served Gold Seal Vineyards so well in the past. History became our best teacher, for conditions on the rolling hillsides above Seneca Lake proved ideal for growing and harvesting premium grapes and subsequently crafting heavenly wines. In just a few short years, our boutique winery began to make history with a prized selection of awardwinning wines. Our wines continue to reap honors and critical acclaim on the wine circuit, but we've only just begun to show our potential. We plan to move into the history
of the future, with the great vineyards of the world, bringing much deserved recognition to the new world-class wines of the Finger Lakes. From ripe, richly flavored grapes we produce premium wines - each year making slightly more wine which is better than the preceding vintage. Our first crush, in 1993, yielded only 800 cases, which was quickly discovered and sold out in just 12 short weeks. We now produce about 8000 cases, allowing us to bring wine to you in more locations. We always encourage you to visit the winery, drink in the view, and enjoy the current vintage. Tour our 41 acres of vineyards. Learn how we carefully nurture the fruit of the vine through the fall and winter, and into summer, in a way that allows the best features of that fruit to show through in the finished wine The wines are made and sold in renovated barns. The white wines are made in stainless steel tanks, allowing temperature control of fermentation and cellaring, and the red wines and Chardonnay are made in oak barrels - primarily American Oak. We spend many hours tasting the wines, both to follow their progress, and to assess the blends. We believe that the hands-on, vineyard based approach to our wines results

After working in teaching (Ann) and Peace Corps and business (John), they moved to Yates County in 1973 to grow grapes and raise their family on 100 acres overlooking Seneca Lake. Ann managed the vineyard and raised the children, while John worked for Cornell University at the Agricultural Experiment Station in Geneva, New York. The grapes from their vineyards were first sold to the Taylor Wine Company and eventually to wineries across New York State. In 1990, Ann and John Martini opened Anthony Road Wine Company with wines made from the 1989 crop. The first building was a renovated farm shop and the equipment was at best an eclectic collection of used and borrowed tanks and pumps and an old apple press. Their children, Peter, Sarah, Maeve and Elizabeth, have been involved in the vineyard and winery throughout their growing years and beyond. Peter and Elizabeth are now full-time employees of Anthony Road Wine Company. The joy of growing grapes and producing fine wines still motivates and excites the Martini family…more than a quarter-century after the first vines took root.
