ABC Family becomes Freeform with help from ‘Shadowhunters' A lot is riding on “Shadowhunters”: Not only does it turn a popular book franchise into a series, it also launches a new network. Well, a somewhat new network. ABC Family becomes Freeform on the day the supernatural adventure premieres, Tuesday, Jan. 12. While shows including “Pretty Little Liars” (which starts a new season on that date) are being held over, others are being added in service of Freeform’s aim to appeal to “Becomers,” viewers who are experiencing “firsts” from their first kiss to the birth of their first child. Inspired by Cassandra Clare’s “The Mortal Instruments” novels, “Shadowhunters” tackles that mission as Katherine McNamara (previously seen on ABC Family’s “The Fosters,” which also will continue on Freeform) stars as Clary Fray, who’s stunned to discover she belongs to a line of half-human, half-angels that hunt demons. She gets a personal reason to join that quest when her mother is kidnapped; Dominic Sherwood, Alberto Rosende, Emeraude Toubia and Matthew Daddario play her comrades in battling the otherworldly. A veteran of Broadway’s “A Little Night Music” (in which she performed with Angela Lansbury and Bernadette Peters in different casts), the friendly and

InFocus “The Fall: Season 2,” www.netflix. com/title/70272726 It’s been out a while in the U.K., but Season 2 of the gripping Northern Ire land serial killer drama that stars Gillian Anderson and Jamie Dornan drops this side of the pond with six episodes on Saturday. Netflix isn’t offering up much of an explanation as to what to expect but the creepy trailer of Anderson ap pearing dead in a bed should certainly be enough a whet viewers’ appetites. “Just for Laughs,” cwseed.com/ shows/just-for-laughs/ The stand-up comedy series of the same name that’s hosted by Howie Mandel doesn’t premiere until next week, but viewers can get ready for it by visiting The CW's online companion website, CW Seed, to sample more than 100 “Just for Laughs” specials that have aired over the years. Among the perfor mances residing there are those by Jay Baruchel, Kristen Schaal, John Mulaney, Tom Papa, Demetri Martin, Lewis Black and Sinbad.

energetic McNamara allows the “Shadowhunters” casting room “was indeed” packed with young actresses who wanted to be Clary. “It’s a new interpretation of a story that so many people love and are attached to,” she says. “We have this opportunity to start fresh and take a new perspective on it, and really do our own thing with it, which is fantastic.” The “Mortal Instruments” books also yielded a 2013 movie that starred Lily Collins as Clary, and “Shadowhunters” executive producer McG - the filmmaker who also has The CW’s “Supernatural” and NBC’s “The Mysteries of Laura” on the air currently - says he’s “thrilled to be a part” of the Freeform repositioning “right at the ‘go’ moment. There’s something like 36 or 38 million copies of the books out there in the world that have sown the seeds of awareness, and hopefully, we can deliver on the television version of that.” McG saw the film, subtitled “City of Bones,” before he became involved in the TV interpretation: “The movie did well, I just don’t know if it did quite well enough to warrant a sequel, so they decided to reappropriate it to television. Hour by hour, you can tell more story and dive more deeply into the subject matter, the North Star of

that being ‘Game ofThrones.’ I don’t think that would be nearly as satisfying as a two- or three-hour movie as it is an hour at a time over a 10-hour season.” Ed Decter, co-writer of the movie “There’s Something About Mary,” also is a “Shadowhunters” executive producer. The ample physical training required of the cast became “sort of a bonding experience for all of us,” McNamara reports. “We all had a personal trainer, then we also had gymnastics training so we could do a bunch of our own stunts. On top of that, there’s a myriad of different weapons on the show ... swords, knives, whips and bows and arrows. We all kind of taught one another how to fight and spent a lot of time bruising each other, and I think it really benefits the show.” McNamara sees also big benefits to “Shadowhunters” being such a major factor in ABC Family’s transition into Freeform. “We’re very fortunate to have that freedom, if you will, in doing a show of this nature,” she notes. “There is so much leeway we have with the fight sequences and the romance of the show and the different special effects. There are risks we can take because they’re doing the rebrand. While the show is trying to find its tone and its voice, so is the network, so they’ve helped to shape each other.”

Non-invasive Neck Pain Relief Vicki W-Medford, OR. "I had to hold my hair to get into bed and keep my head in place so I could lay down and I would still yell. It helped me to lay down in bed. I've gone from a pain of 8-10 to now it's a 1. I can do so much more now. I can pick things up off the floor and do laundry." (541) 830-4325 for details.

rainck Kane, the Blackhawks' scoring machine

Late Show With Stephen Colbert

Late Night with Seth Meyers

FULL NAME: Patrick Timothy Kane II

BORN: Nov. 19, 1988 BIRTHPLACE: Buffalo, NY HEIGHT/WEIGHT: 5 foot, 11 inches/1 77-pounds

When Patrick Kane isn’t putting the puck in the net, he’s usually feeding it to the player who is. The defending Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks’ right winger and the rest of the ‘Hawks visit the Montreal Canadiens Thursday, M Jan. 14 on NBCSN in a game ■by DAN LADD that features two of the NHL’s top teams. The Canadiens, led by center Tomas Plekanec have been atop the Eastern Division’s Atlantic Conference for much of season. The Blackhawks meanwhile, who earlier this season rode a 26-game scoring streak courtesy of Kane, try to keep pace with the Dallas Stars in the Western Division’s Central Conference. Thanks in part to the scoring streak Kane has been on a tear this season. At press time he was leading the NHL in points scored, including goals and was second in assists. It should be noted that Kane was the NHL’s leading scorer when he broke his collarbone last season. He eventually returned to score 11 goals and have 12 assists in the playoffs, many of them key scores. It hasn’t been all roses for Kane this season, however, as he was at the center of a sexual assault investigation that began in the off season and carried on until early November when the case against him was dropped. Kane was well into the scoring streak at that time and Blackhawks fans are hoping that’s all behind him, that he can stay healthy and not only win another Stanley Cup, but likely contend for the MVP trophy as well.

Martin Shkreli, the pharmaceutical CEO who once tried to raise the price of an HIV medication by 5 thousand percent, has been arrested on securities fraud charges. It's also the first time the FBI has used someone's face as evidence. Rapper Azealia Banks was arrested last night after attacking a female security guard at a Manhattan club and reportedly biting the woman's breast. Onlookers said the situation went from bad to worse, to slightly better, and then super super bad. Congress this weekend ended the federal government's ban on medical marijuana. Good news for people with glaucoma as well as people with (do the finger quotes) "glaucoma."

The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon The opening of "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" is tonight. I read that a fan paid a half a MILLION dollars for a rare collection of "Star Wars" toys at an auction yesterday here in New York City. When asked if he's going to see the new Star Wars movie tonight, the man said, (PATS POCKETS)

We are only a week away from Christmas. This is the time when we really begin to cherish our family and friends by rushing out to C.V.S. To buy gift cards, and finding the only ones left are for subway and dick's sporting goods. According to the Wall Street Journal, people in China aren't that familiar with the "Star Wars" movies. Though they might be familiar with some of the toys. Spoiler alert. The elves don't make them!

The Late Late Show With James Corden There's a new Internet start-up called Swanluv that will give you $1 0,000 to help pay for your wedding. However, if you get divorced, you must pay the money back, plus interest. What better way to start your life together than with the threat of financial ruin hanging over your head.

Jimmy Kimmel Live Ted Cruz said he would carpet bomb ISIS until the sand glowed. When it was pointed out ISIS was centered in a city with a major population, he said carpet bombs should only target ISIS, which means Ted Cruz has invented a carpet bomb that onlv kills the bad guys, which is remarkable. I don't know why we didn't think of that before.

Conan O'Brien Last night, the GOP debate took place in Las Vegas. CNN said the Republicans chose that location because "nothing says fiscal responsibility and wise choices like Las Vegas."

Numerous celebrities will attend the Golden Globe Awards again, but it’s a good bet Jamie Foxx will be the proudest parent in the room. A past Globe winner (for “Ray”), the actor-comedian-singer will see his daughter Corinne on stage all night as this years Miss Golden Globe, an established performer’s offspring who’s selected to assist in literally handing out the honors. ’With renowned snark-master Ricky Gervais returning for his fourth stint as host, the 73rd annual ceremony airs Sunday, Jan. 10, on NBC from the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, Calif. (“Today” staples including Matt Lauer and Savannah Guthrie will host a pre-show special.) In succeeding such other Hollywood progeny as Rumer Willis (daughter of Bruce Willis and Demi Moore), Sosie Bacon (whose parents are Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick) and Gia Mantegna (Joe’s daughter), Corinne Foxx already has participated in such related activities as last month’s announcement of the Golden Globe nominees. “There were a lot of people in the room, a lot of media, so it was intimidating,” the charming University of Southern California senior admits of that occasion, “but luckily, I didn’t have to go on stage and say anything. I could just sit there.” Not so on the night of the awards, since Foxx will be in front of the crowd for the better part of three hours. “The pressure is more about not falling and not dropping any of the awards,” muses the model and aspiring actress, “and not tripping. My biggest concern is probably about finding the right pair of shoes so that Fm not stumbling across the stage.” Even if that were to happen, Foxx’s dad likely would be delighted. “He’s super-proud of me in anything I do,” his daughter confirms. “I could change a tire on my car, and he’d be just overwhelmed, so this is a huge deal for him. He just goes on and on about it, in the best way possible. I think he might be even more excited than I am.” A highlight of these Golden Globes is sure to be the presentation of the Cecil B. DeMille Award for career achievement to Denzel Washington. Any hijinks Gervais may be planning will take a backseat during that segment, but Foxx feels reasonably prepared for any mirth he might have up his sleeves. “Fve been to the Golden Globes, and they definitely make it more like a party than the kind of award show where you’re just sitting and watching. There’s a good energy in the room.” Wrhile the show was hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler the year Foxx attended it, she says, “I keep getting all these warnings like, Are you ready for what Ricky’s gonna do?’ My dad’s a comedian, so I can take the punches if they come.”

bestof BEST SESAME STREET’ GUESTS Carol Burnett (five appearances, 1969-71) A bit of trivia — Burnett was the show's first celebrity guest in November of 1969. But viewers from James Earl Jones

that era will likely best remember her 1 970 appearance, in which she professed her love for her rubber ducky, thus teaching that people should feel free to express their affections for inanimate objects. James Earl Jones (six appearances, 1969-2004) A then 38-year-old Jones appeared in the second-ever episode of "Sesame Street" in 1969, reciting the alphabet as a Broadway star should, clearly and with perfect diction. Stevie Wonder (1973, 1982) The R&B singer made his first appearance on the "Street" in its fourth season to perform "1,2,3" and his hit "Superstitious," and to teach Grover how to sing scat - a skill the Muppet character obviously didn't further cultivate. Billy Crystal (1984) As his New Yawk-accented "Saturday Night Live" character Ricky, Crystal used exclamations of "unbelievable!" to react to events in the skit and teach young viewers about the letter U. Billy Joel and Marlee Matlin (1988) The Piano Man and the "Children of a Lesser God" Oscar winner serenaded Oscar the Grouch with his hit "Just the Way You Are" in an effort to break the Muppet character's perpetually foul mood. Robin Williams (seven appearances, 1991-2012) The late comic certainly knew how to get to Sesame Street, judging by his numerous appearances. But probably his most memorable came in '91, when he used his manic delivery to explain to Elmo all the fun uses for a stick - with G-rated language, of course. Marisa Tomei (1995) The Oscar-winning actress put her Brooklyn roots to good use as a gum-cracking Bensonhurst fast-food waitress reading and performing a version of "The Frog Prince" for monkey friends Davy and Joey. REM (1998) Michael Stipe and company parodied their hit "Shiny Happy People" with a spirited rendition of "Furry Happy Monsters," a song about monsters being happy, then sad, then happy again - though the Muppet monsters appeared to be happy throughout the performance. Robert De Niro (2007) The two-time Oscar winner gave Elmo a lesson in acting, showing him how imagination can transform him into a dog, a cabbage and, well, Elmo. Very amusing. Feist (2008) The Canadian pop singer's 2007 hit "1 234" was tailor-made for "Sesame Street" to teach children how to count — to 4, at least — in a very bouncy performance with the Muppets.

PG 14 The Nickel - Thursday, January 14, 2016 It stands to reason that if you spend enough time around culinary people, you’re bound to pick up a few pointers. What did you have for dinner last night? “I had Thai food. I had Tom Kha Gai soup ... the chicken soup.” What is your next project? “My next project is we go back for another season of‘Cake Wars.’ ... I have ‘Submerged,’ which is out on demand right now, and it’s an action thriller and it’s my first foray into an action (movie) and it’s really good. It’s about a limo that’s trapped under water and about the people stuck inside it. So it’s really, really intense and it’s really great. You can get it on demand and on Amazon. And then ... I’m in a bunch of episodes of‘Awkward’ on MTV, which is coming out starting in January. So I come on and close out the season coming on to play Jennas new boss.” When was the last vacation you took, where and why? “I went to Mammoth Mountain (Calif.) and I went skiing.”
