Commencement: Grads had privilege of becoming educated, Brown says Continued from page 1 to good use. “Whatever the circumstances that brought you (to OU), you are now obligated because you have been given the rarest of privileges: the privilege of becoming a learned person,” Simmons said. This privilege leaves graduates with a responsibility, she said. “With all that you have studied, you owe it to your education to have an open mind, a sense of high purpose and a commitment to return COVER something of benSTORY efit to the common good from which you have drawn so much,” Simmons said. Simmons, the first black president of an Ivy League institution, opened by saying she was hesitant at first to speak at OU’s commencement because of the university’s emphasis on football, but she wanted to deliver her message of graduates accepting those who are different from themselves. “Martin Luther King Jr. evoked constantly the ideal of the beloved community as one in which we care for each other — not only in a principal way but in a way in which we forge and nurture bonds that allow us to accept those who are different from us,” Simmons said. Before Simmons’ speech, OU President David Boren listed a few of the graduating students’ achievements, which ranged from national scholar awards to national championships. The ceremony showcased the class’ diversity by marching the flags of each country represented by 2012 graduates in the aisles. Boren also announced

Ed Shadid (left) accepts an honorary degree on behalf of his cousin, Anthony Shadid, from President David Boren during commencement Friday at Lloyd Noble Center. Shadid, who died in February of an apparent asthma attack while in Syria, was notified before his death that he would receive the degree. “He asked what he needed to do to receive the degree,” Boren said. “We told him all he had to do was show up. He said he was certain he could do that. Tragically, it was the one thing he could not do.”

that OU has earned the highest graduation rate of a public university in state history. “All of this proves that the bumper sticker is true: It’s hard to be humble when you’re a Sooner,” Boren said. Derrick Carlson, who graduated from OU with an English degree, is one of the many Sooners moving away from Norman after

graduation. His next home will be Chicago, where he’ll start a new job. “It still hasn’t fully hit me that I’m not going to be here anymore,” Carlson said. “[The ceremony] was a great experience getting to see everyone for one last time, but at the same time, you don’t really understand that it’s the last time that you’re going to

see a lot of these people.” At the end of commencement, the crowd cracked glow sticks to wave in the air as red and white ribbons streamed down from the ceiling. “I can hardly wait until this generation takes over America,” Boren said. “I hope I’m there to see it all happen.”

oach Bob Stoops wasn’t finished with his own version of “spring cleaning.” Following a season that ended with several transfers and dismissals from the locker room, Stoops and Co. said they weren’t giving out free rides anymore. But apparently receivers Trey Franks, Jaz Reynolds, Kameel Jackson and reserve safety Quentin Hayes didn’t get that memo. If my count is correct — and I’m assuming that these players won’t be coming back — this makes 13 scholarships that have opened up since December. While some of the exiting players weren’t starters and saw only a handful of playing minutes, this past group of exiles take with them 75 percent of OU’s starting receiving corps. That’s a big hit for a program that is trying to get back on the national title run after failing to get close to the championship game last season. I think it was safe to assume that after the December teammate fire

on 22 attempts. Reynolds was the second repeat offender of the bunch, his third team violation. His most notable previous infraction was the malicious Twitter posts about the shooting in 2010 on Texas’ campus. You would think these guys took their mulligan from Stoops and learned how to avoid missing games due to extracurricular activities off the field. But maybe taking such high-level recruits means there is a price to pay once they come to campus. When three-, four- and five-star recruits are used to being men among boys at the high school level and have to learn to play as a team and hold themselves accountable for their actions, incidents like these may just be collateral damage. I’m a college student, and you don’t have to preach the “boys will be boys” philosophy. Four football players have been suspended indefinitely for violating team rules, the athletic department announced last week. OU coach Bob Stoops said defensive back Quentin Hayes and wide receivers Trey Franks, Kameel Jackson and Jaz Reynolds were suspended. Franks and Reynolds have been suspended before. Reynolds was suspended after tweeting insensitive comments about a gunman at the University of Texas. He also was suspended for one game last season for a violation of team rules.
