ith Halloween approaching, discussions about cultural appropriation have been stirring on social media, inciting debate about what is offensive and what is not. But it’s not about being offended. Detrimental and problematic portrayals of cultures span more issues than simply being offended, particularly when it comes to the Native American community. Indigenous peoples are two and a half times more likely to be victims of sexual assault crimes compared to all other races. One in three Native women report that she has been raped during her lifetime, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. You may be wondering what this has to do with Halloween costumes. Let me be clear: Halloween costumes are not the cause of high sexual assault rates in the Native community. But the over-sexualization and dehumanization of Natives caused by these costumes certainly does not do anything to help fix the problem. People may argue that these costumes are just fun

and games and that they are not intended to offend anyone. But that’s simply not justification. Whether the wearer of a costume intends to cause harm or not, there will be harm done to the culture as a whole. For a culture that has historically suffered from sexual violence since the time of the European settlers, costumes like the “Pocahottie” p e r p e tu at e a t rou b l i ng image that Native women are sexual objects. Native women don’t walk around with paint on their faces, feathers in their hair or buckskin miniskirts. But that’s what these costumes infer. Men’s costumes are no better, commonly featuring loincloths, tomahawks and, usually, the absence of a shirt. Campaigns like “We’re a Culture, Not a Costume” are fighting to end the wearing of racial costumes of all kinds. “Wearing something that turns someone else’s culture into a costume (like a ‘geisha’ costume) reduces an entire culture into a stereotype,” the campaign’s website states. This can be extremely harmful. “In the sexual violence field, we know that one of

the ways that people justify violence against others is by dehumanizing them — reducing a person or people into objects,” the website states. Another argument for justifying these sort of costumes is that it is an appreciation of cultures. But there is a fine line between appreciation and appropriation. “While it is great to have interests in other cultures, wearing a costume that appropriates someone else’s culture does not show respect or interest and that is important to consider when thinking about Halloween costumes,” according to the campaign site. The fight against the hyper-sexualization of Natives is not a new endeavor. Indigenous activists like Suzan Harjo and Amanda Blackhorse have been fighting against cultural appropriation and racism for years, including the move to eradicate the nickname of Washington’s NFL franchise. But just as it took years for women to gain the right to vote and for same-sex couples to get the right to marry, it will take time for society to admit its problematic treatment of other cultures and take action to stop it.

OU DAY OF THE DEAD LATINO STUDENTS CELEBRATE EL DÍA DE LOS MUERTOS

JESSICA BARBER |@JESSICADYLAN16 Latino Student Life will be hosting OU Day of the Dead Street Festival, an event to celebrate Dia de Los Muertos, at Lloyd Noble this Sunday. Day of the Dead is a centuries old holiday meant to celebrate those who have died and to rejoice those that are still living. “We want the surrounding Hispanic community to feel welcome here at the university,” the chair of the event, Dennise Pedroza, said. “Apart from this, we want to offer a way for others to learn about a part of our culture and have those differences in culture bring us together.” The street festival will be one of the largest celebrations for Day of the Dead in OU’s history. The group has been planning the festival for the past two semesters, Pedroza said. Last semester was used to gather vice chairs and committees and come up with plans and ideas for the event, she said. “Once the fall semester started we started implementing all of our plans and contacting vendors as well as dealing with sponsorship,” Pedroza said.

The festival will feature many different activities and bands performing throughout the day. “We will be having various activities including face painting, arts and crafts, carnival rides and many vendors will be there as well,” Pedroza said. “Apart from that there will be dance and musical performances throughout the evening.” OU Day of the Dead Street Festival will be this Sunday at the Lloyd Noble Center from 4:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.

“WE WANT THE SURROUNDING HISPANIC COMMUNITY TO FEEL WELCOME HERE AT THE UNIVERSITY.”

HALLOWEEN TREATS CREATIVE SNACKS FOR ANY FESTIVE HALLOWEEN PARTY

JESSICA BARBER |@JESSICADYLAN16 The best part about Halloween is probably all of the sweet treats that are around the house. From candy corn to pumpkin cookies, at The Daily, we’ve got all of your sweet treat needs covered.

1. Graveyard Chips and Dip

Chips and dip are a classic for any party, why not get creative and make your platter into a grave yard? Just put your dip in any square bowl and place chips around as if they were headstones.

2. Ghostly Bananas

Sometimes all of the sugar from candy is overwhelming and you need a healthy alternative. Decorate bananas to be ghosts, just add chocolate chips to make eyes and a mouth to each banana.

3. Citrus Pumpkins

I know, more health food, but this time there’s a little bit of a twist. Peel clementine oranges and add part of a green sour-straw to the end to make it look like a pumpkin. Alternatively, leave the peels on the orange and use a sharpie to draw a Jack-O-Lantern onto the faces of the oranges.

4. Ghostly Hot Chocolate

Add ghost marshmallows to your hot chocolate this Halloween night to warm up from a night of trick-or-treating. You can find this addition to your sweet drink here.

ROCKY HORROR SHOW OU TO PRODUCE AN UNFAMILIAR BROADWAY PICTURE

CHLOE MOORES | @CHLOEMOORES13 “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” is due to deliver all the callbacks, characters and campy-esque style true to the original production, which bred the cult following, but with a truthful twist. Richard’s O’Brien’s “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” musical opens Friday and was a show that guest director and choreographer, Richard J. Hinds, had previously only seen on Broadway once, Hinds said. “I think what’s so great about this production is that Aaron (OU musical theatre alumni and associate director and choreographer Aaron Umsted) and I were both incredibly unfamiliar with this show,” Hinds said. “What has been great about the show for us is it has been a 100 percent original discovery with all our actors, designers and really making something original.” “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” follows the “quintessential 1950s, all American couple,” Brad Majors and Janet Weiss. The couple meets an interesting cast of characters that are actually aliens from outer space, Hinds said. According to a New York Times review of the production, the characters can come across as falsely genuine. Hinds had a plan to combat this criticism and present Brad and Janet as truthful characters. “I think in my research of the show, I found it most successful to establish some

grounded character work at the top of the show so that you feel like ‘oh these are real people’ which makes you think the world they get sucked into is that much more bizarre and crazy,” he said. Senior musical theatre major Andrew Kohagen plays lead character Brad Majors and said that refraining from slipping into an animatronic character and staying genuine was challenging at first. “Everyone around you is so big and you want to (be) big with them, but remembering the truth within these characters is very important to the story,” Kohagen said. Junior musical theatre major Mattie Joyner plays lead character Janet Weiss and said she and the rest of the cast read an article by Scott Miller, an author who conducts research over musicals, as part of their research of the show. Miller’s article noted that the London production of “Rocky Horror” was a huge success unlike the initial failures of the original film and Broadway production, Kohagen said. Miller pointed out that London’s key to success was keeping the characters down to earth. “I think what we’ve done is embrace that original production and the truth within the characters and bring that back to the show that is loved by so many people in a cult way,” Kohagen said. “It’s Rocky Horror and it’s

crazy and it’s fun, but there are a lot of honest moments in it, especially when you get to the ending of the show. There are a lot of moments when you think ‘oh wow,’ that impacts you.” These moments include, “issues of sexual awakening, life and death, forgiveness and redemption, lost innocence and of course, commentary on the glam rock era” according to a note from Hinds. Hinds said a good balance has been found between the serious and the fun side of the production. “Where we wanted it to be sincere it is and when we wanted it to rock it rocks,” Hinds said. “We have lots of lights, lots of smoke and lots of lasers.” Audience members can prepare themselves for an immersive 360 degree experience, Hinds said. “There are actors in the aisles, talking with you, sitting with you. We built stages that extend into the audience so we really try to bring it up to everyone’s faces.” For Joyner, performing Rocky Horror is the third production she will perform in the Weitzenhoffer Theatre. “Its so interesting seeing how differently each person who has directed or choreographed a show utilized the space,” Joyner said. “If you decide to sit on the sides, you’re literally going to have people dancing in your faces. If you want to be interacted with, you will,”

ROCKY HORROR SHOW WHEN: October 30-31 and November 5-6 at 8 p.m. There will also be 11:30 p.m. performances on October 31 and November 6-7 in the Weitzenhoffer theatre. HOW MUCH: Adult tickets $30, discount tickets $25 and student tickets $10 • Discount tickets available for OU employees, seniors 60 and over, and military personnel. Student tickets available for children and college students with a valid ID.

Joyner said. Rocky Horror wouldn’t b e R o c k y Ho r ro r w i t h ou t i t s n o te d au d i e n c e cooperation. The show is characterized for both its callout lines and props such as rice, newspaper, rubber gloves, water guns and a few others.

REVIEW:NEW STAR WARS VIDEO GAME

PHOTO PROVIDED

MAX ROOT/ A&E REPORTER MAX ROOT

A&E Reporter

Hello, childhood. “Battlefront 3” is a Star Wars multiplayer first person shooter, developed by DICE, the same studio that developed the “Battlefield series”. The game is packed with all things Star Wars, including Jedis, X-wings and

WEAKEN THE PERSONAL SHIELD blasters. The four-day beta ended on Oct. 12, and the final game launches on Nov. 17. The beta was great, but what needs to be added or changed? In no particular order, here’s my list of things I want added or changed in “Battlefront 3”.

While cool, the personal shield ability is overpowered. It is too easy to activate the shield and flee from enemies. Shortening the duration and increasing the recharge rate would solve its clear advantage. I, personally, don’t care for the shield at all. It slows down the fast gun play. I would not mind if it was removed entirely.

DF9 HEALTH INDICATOR

MORE WEAPON VARIETY

The DF9 is an awesome defensive turret for the rebels, but it is too difficult to notice when someone is inside. It is too easy to go undetected. This could be fixed in two ways: Adding a light bar around the turret or adding a health bar above the turret. This would level the playing field against the Empire’s infantry.

Blasters in the game are awesome. They lack variety, though. Each gun spits out the same red colored laser at similar speed and with similar damage. They do vary slightly, but is not noticeable enough for each gun to have clear advantages and disadvantages. In the final game I hope to see the ability to customize the laser color as well as obvious gun differences.

VARIED SPAWN POINTS FOR VEHICLES

X-wings spawn from the same location every time, making it too easy for tie-fighters to pick them off. Adding additional spawn points will aid this. There may already be additional spawn points on other maps, but the “Battle of Hoth” did not have this luxury. Otherwise, I may just stick to ground combat.
