NOTE FROM THE EDITORS This issue of ESCAPE is dedicated to celebrating beauty in all its forms. Right now, the American beauty industry celebrates a singular form of female beauty — a light-haired, light-skinned, light-eyed, thin and feminine form of beauty. Through this issue, we hope to show a diverse — though admittedly not all-encompassing — look at beauty. We encourage you to engage with us through social media and tell us what beauty is to you using the hashtag #OUBeauty.

VI LE

biology pre-med sophomore, French minor Favorite product you use on a daily basis: Face moisturizer from Estee Lauder and eyebrow pencil her mother gets from Vietnam, Morning Routine: Vi’s routine depends on whether she has a day full of activities or not. On regular days, she gets up, puts on face moisturizer, and highlights with concealer under her eyes. Then Vi pencils in her eyebrows, adds a light eye shadow, uses brown pencil eyeliner under her eyelids and finishes her eyes with mascara. Vi applies a little bronzer and blush, and her hair is usually natural. But on days she has activities, Vi applies liquid foundation, eyeliner both on her top and bottom lids, applies a more colorful shadow on her eyes and boosts up the bronzer and the blush. Going Out Routine: Vi begins with a shower, blow dries her hair and while it finishes drying, she applies her make up. Her typical night-out arsenal consists of foundation, highlighting concealer, eyebrows shaped and shadowed, eye shadow (based on her outfit of the night), liquid eye liner with a wing and mascara. Vi contours to highlight the shape of her face then uses bronzer, blush and tops the look off with lipstick. After her hair is completely dry, Vi likes to do soft curls.

Favorite product you use on a daily basis: Mascara, which Courtney says is because she has extremely long eyelashes, and she likes to show them off. Going Out Routine: Courtney pumps up the jams. She puts on a little more foundation, mascara, and lipstick than she would normally, and she calls it good! Simple.

SHAWNTAL BROWN

psychology junior, women’s and gender studies minor

Favorite product you use on a daily basis: NYX Cosmetics – Soft Matte Lip Cream

Favorite product you use on a daily basis: Urban Decay Naked Palette

Morning Routine: Shreya admits that she doesn’t put much effort into her appearance on a regular school day. She prefers to work with the natural texture of her wavy hair. To do that, Shreya puts some Sea Spray Hair Mist (from LUSH Cosmetics) in her hair while it’s wet and lets it air dry. She applies a moisturizer, powder foundation, mascara and lip stain. The lip stain she typically wears is the NYX SMLC in San Paolo.

Morning Routine: Shawntal washes her face with Neutrogena Pink Grapefruit face wash and moisturizer. Then, she moves on to her eyes, preparing them with a Wet n Wild primer. Using Urban Decay Naked Palette, she bucks a color combination of Toasted and Hustle onto her lids and uses Sidecar or Smog in the crease. Next, she applies Wet n Wild eyeliner in a cat-eye fashion and finishes with NYC or Wet n Wild mascara. Sometimes, depending on how sunny is it that day, Shawntal may wear bronzer as well. Her favorites are the Wet n Wild bronzer or the Forever21 brand bronzer.

Going Out Routine: If Shreya needs to look polished for an event, she has a more fun routine! She starts by putting Macadamia Healing Oil Treatment into damp hair and blow-dries it. Then, she applies OGX’s Flat Iron Spray and straightens her hair. For make-up, she starts with a moisturizer. After that, she uses a foundation stick, concealer, matte powder, and blush. Her favorite shade of blush is Milani’s Baked Blush in Berry Amore — which is also vegan! If she’s feeling really fancy, Shreya uses some illuminator on the apples of her cheeks (typically NARS Illuminator in Laguna), then applies her favorite eye shadow and mascara. She tends to stick to shimmery gold shades of eyeshadow in Urban Decay’s Naked3 palette. Shreya’s friends know she loves bright lips. Every lip color she owns is a bold shade of fuchsia. She uses a darker fuchsia for more formal events, but otherwise she sticks to bright colors. Her favorite lip shade to wear to fun events is NYX SMLC in Addis Ababa.

Going Out Routine: Shawntal’s night-out routine is nearly the same as her day-time ritual. She begins by washing her face with Neutrogena Pink Grapefruit face wash and moisturizer. Next, she applies Makeup Forever Mat Velvet foundation and follows that with Wet n Wild primer on her eyelids. Then, using Urban Decay Naked Palette, she uses a varying color combination of Halfbaked, Smog or Toasted in the crease of her eyes — and no highlight shadow. She applies Wet n Wild eyeliner in a cat-eye fashion and finishes her eyes with NYC or Wet n Wild mascara. On her face Shawntal uses Wet n Wild bronzer or Forever21-brand bronzer with the Urban Decay Naked Flushed Palette to add some color. Now, for her lips — Colorpop Cosmetics are her go-tos, and Shawntal’s colors are Avenue, LAX or Tulle (or a mixture of them).

NEW FASHION YORK FASHION WEEK PLUS WEEK TAKES STEP TOWARD BODY POSITIVITY, INCLUSIVITY LESLIE CORBLY | @LESLIE_CORBLY New York Fashion Week has been setting trends since 1943, giving fashion designers the chance to showcase their collections for the upcoming season. Just last week, the 2015 New York Fashion Week ended a series of events on Sept. 17. This year, the event made headlines for breaking down fashion barriers. As reported on its website, New York Fashion Week Plus ran from September 9-13. During t h e s e d a t e s, d e s i g n e r s highlighted their plus-size collections coming out in spring 2016. Ashley Graham, the first plus-sized model to appear in the Sports Illustrated

Swimsuit Edition, took to the catwalk, showcasing her new line of lingerie. Graham told Today News she struggled to find lingerie that was both sexy and supportive. “I wanted to create a line that did both and made [women] feel beautiful,” she told Today News. While the promotion of plus-size fashion at New York Fashion Week is certainly a step forward, some see a trend in the fashion industry in which plus size is segregated from other sizes, causing those who are plus size to feel disconnected with fashion trends. Well-known Hollywood star, Melissa McCarthy,

released a new clothing line in August aimed at combating problems in the fashion industry, Connie Wang of Refinery29 reported. McCarthy takes issue with the term ‘plus size,’ saying in the article, “I just think, if you’re going to make women’s clothing, make women’s clothing. Designers that put everyone in categories are overcomplicating something that should be easy.” She said in the article that even as a Hollywood star she struggled to find flattering clothing in her size, and she often found it difficult to find clothing that fit her style. “I don’t like the segregated plus section. You’re saying,‘You don’t get what everybody else gets. You have

to go shop up by the tire section,’” she said to Refinery29. McCarthy is not the only one who feels the term ‘plus size’ is problematic. Stefania Ferrario, Australian model, started a social media campaign, #DropThePlus, earlier this year to raise awareness about size segregation,

the Huffington Post reported. “Let’s have models of ALL shapes, sizes and ethnicities and drop the misleading labels. I’m NOT proud to be called ‘plus’, but I AM proud to be called a ‘model’, that is my profession. #droptheplus,” she posted on

Instagram. While it is refreshing to see plus-size women own the catwalk at New York Fashion Week, there is still more progress to be made in the struggle for the acceptance of all bodies in the fashion industry.
