MOVING FORWARD WHAT WE’VE LEARNED AND WHERE WE’RE GOING AFTER THIS WEEK
EDITORIAL BOARD | @OUDAILY
R
eal S ooners today aren’t racists, but racism is a part of OU’s history. This week’s events reminded us of that history, but they also showed us that our generation of Sooners has the power to bury that legacy once and for all. That’s what we’re taking away from this week, which began when a group of Sigma Alpha Epsilon members appeared in videos chanting racial slurs. It ended with the entire university community coming together to embrace diversity and disavow hatred. But the conversation started before this week. OU’s Unheard brought campus race issues to light beginning in January by organizing demonstrations to protest underrepresentation in campus life.
that racism was indeed alive on campus. It wasn’t just one group’s fight. It’s everyone’s. The support started with a variety of student organizations on campus rushing together in unity to first pray and then protest. Athletes, multicultural groups and religious groups all came together in their own way, but the message was clear: OU was listening. OU wanted a change. As OU made national news, alumni, parents, and people around the nation tuned in and came together to support students and the campus. The circle of support grew as more people heard and joined together to protest, pray, celebrate and listen. It has undoubtedly been a rough week at OU. Don’t let the hurt that so many groups on campus have felt be for nothing. Instead, rememSo when the SAE video ber that the events that have leaked, the OU community unfolded since Sunday night was confronted with proof have left us with a strong
foundation upon which to create the sort of change that will go down in history. There is work to do. So do it. Don’t let OU be remembered for the bad event; let OU be remembered by the change we started that swept the nation. Cowardice only perpetuates racism and other forms of bigotry. We have to make an effort to understand each other. We have to stand up for injustice when we see it. We have to make OU a more welcoming, inclusive space for everyone. Listen. Speak up when you need to. Make the change. That starts with you as an individual, then you as a leader in your group, then you as a Sooner, then you as part of the group of people unwilling to let this chance to make a change pass by. To everyone involved in the conversation about race at OU: keep talking. This ESCAPE issue is for you.
