MOM’S DAY, ALL WEEKEND THREE DAY EVENT INCLUDES TEA, BRUNCH, PAINTING AND LIVE MUSIC
T
he time for OU students to celebrate their families and spend a weekend with their mothers is nearly here. This year, Mom’s Weekend will take place April 17 and 18, with OU Black Student Association hosting a brunch on April 19, and offers a variety of events across campus. Every event planned by the Campus Activities Council for Mom’s Day will be free to students and their families, said Robert Evans, the CAC Mom’s Day chairperson. While in the past, planners of Mom’s Day events have recycled and repeated ideas year to year, this year the group came up with
completely new ideas, Evans said. “ This year we wanted to go back to the drawing boards and have all new, fresh ideas,” Evans said. “We wanted to widen our appeal to students of all genders and backgrounds.” In celebration of OU’s moms, seven events will be spread out throughout the weekend, according to a schedule provided by Evans. Whatever events students and their families are able to attend, all CAC activities will be free, Evans said. “We strive to provide the most inclusive and fun atmosphere at which students and their mothers can bond
with other students and their families,” Evans said. Evans encourages all students to bring their mothers to the events if they can, regardless of their involvement with the greek community, he said. “We operate with the understanding that one of our goals should be to provide engaging, exciting events for all students, especially those who may not be actively involved in greek life,” Evans said. “We want to make sure that the whole OU family is sufficiently represented and that we appeal to everyone through the events that we provide.”

INTERVIEW WITH A RAPPER OKC-BASED JOSH SALLEE TO PERFORM AT STOMPDOWN SHOWCASE ANDREW CLARK | @CLARKY_TWEETS The OU Black Student Association and National PanHellenic Council will host a Stompdown Showcase 7 p.m. April 18 at McCasland Field House. Los Angeles rapper Dom Kennedy will headline the show, along with DJ mixes from DJ YOameriKENdream. Oklahoma City rapper Josh Sallee will open for Kennedy. His latest album, “Know Society,” has five stars on iTunes and was released on Feb. 23, 2014. The local rapper sat down to answer a few questions for The Daily:

But I was like, ‘Wow that’s crazy, you’re just on a Gatorade commercial…’ But that was an experience I will definitely always be able to look back on and kind of just laugh about, it was a really really cool thing.

Love everyone exactly how you would want to be loved, even though that’s the most simple thing ever. When it comes down to it, everybody has problems and I think that my music has been my greatest outlet for being able to express my problems and also to express my love for life and certain things like that. At the end of the day, it sounds so cliché and cheesy, but it comes down to loving others.

WHAT TO WEAR FOR MOM’S DAY EVENTS EMILY SHARP | @ESHARP13
W
ith events going on for Mom’s Day this weekend, April 17-19, it can be difficult to know just what outfit is going to be appropriate for each event. We’ve laid out the best options below, and also: remember to bring a rain coat and umbrella because it’s going to be a wet and rainy weekend.
WINE AND PALETTE
This painting event has the potential to get messy, but a pair of jeans and a nicer T-shirt would work well for this event with your mom. Tip: wear something you’re not afraid to get paint on.
RED, WHITE AND MOM’S DAY BBQ
This is a fun, casual event. Wear what you would to hang out with your friends at any barbecue. Shorts and a tank top with sandals would work for the girls and guys can wear shorts and a polo with some tennis shoes. Rock the casual vibe and take the chance to look cute. Just make sure to embrace the crimson and cream colors.
MORNING YOGA AND PARFAIT
Put on your yoga pants and cutest workout top and tennis shoes, bring your mat and prepare for a nice relaxing morning waking up with your mom. Guys would be good in basketball shorts, a T-shirt and tennis shoes. Come on guys, do it for your mom.
TEA WITH THE BORENS
Probably one of the fanciest events of the weekend, women are encouraged to wear a tea dress. Tea dresses usually hit just below the knee or lower. Pair with either a modest heel or flat shoe. Sun hats are appropriate. Men should wear slacks with a button down, tucked in with a belt, and dress shoes. Ties are optional but would look nice.
MOM’S JUST WANNA HAVE FUN NIGHT AT THE UNION
Throw on your best dancing clothes, but don’t expect to get too crazy. Nice jeans and shirt paired with cute sandals will work well for the girls, or a tank top and cardigan with jeans. Guys would look good in jeans and a nicer shirt with casual shoes.
BSA’S MOM’S WEEKEND SUNDAY BRUNCH
Women will look perfect in a skirt or dressier pants with a blouse with nicer shoes and men will hit the tone perfectly in slacks, a button down, belt and dress shoes. Hopefully this solves all your wardrobe dilemmas and you can focus on enjoying the weekend with your mom!

START HERE WHO ARE YOU?
My name is Jennifer Hicks. I am a native of Norman, Okla., and a 2002 graduate of the University of Oklahoma. I’m the deputy editor of digital news at The Wall Street Journal, where I’ve worked for 11 years. I live in Brooklyn, N.Y., with my husband, Anthony.
WHERE ARE YOU NOW?
After graduating from OU, I received my master’s from Columbia’s Graduate School of Journalism. My first professional journalism job was as the assistant night editor at The Muskogee Phoenix in northeastern Oklahoma. My mentor and the OU Daily’s former adviser, Jack Willis, had been the longtime editor of the newspaper. I worked in Muskogee for about six months before accepting a job with The Wall Street Journal in New York. At the Journal, I lead breaking news on digital platforms and oversee the WSJ.com homepage team. I’ve held a number of editing roles, including a threeyear assignment in London leading WSJ.com’s European edition. I’ve managed digital coverage for three U.S. presidential elections, four Olympic Games, the eurozone debt crisis, key Supreme Court rulings, the Arab Spring and even the royal wedding.
WHO WERE YOU IN COLLEGE?
I was involved in many aspects of student life at OU – President’s Leadership Class, Delta Gamma sorority, Campus Activities Council and more. But most of my time was spent at the DaiIy. When I wasn’t in class, I was in the newsroom in Copeland Hall; sometimes I was in the newsroom when I should’ve been in class.

HOW DID WORKING FOR US HELP SHAPE YOU?
I always knew I wanted to pursue a career in journalism. I started working as a reporter for the Daily the summer before my freshman year. It was the perfect introduction to the field and reinforced my desire to pursue journalism as a career. I held several roles in my four years at the Daily, including online editor, managing editor and night editor. I was editor-in-chief of the newspaper my senior year. The Daily is a place to practice journalism in its many forms. It’s a place to write stories that have impact. It’s a place to make mistakes and learn from them. It’s a place to develop strong ethical standards. It’s a place to blaze a trail and invent new kinds of storytelling. It’s the perfect place to start a career in journalism.
