An Update From Alex Mayer, MP For

Dunstable And Leighton Buzzard Constituency

Protecting our NHS

Our NHS has treated patients for 76 years. But we need to build a health service fit for the future. The new Government has begun the biggest ever conversation about the future of the NHS. Do make sure your voice is heard by sharing your experiences and ideas at: www.change.nhs.uk

Please, if you’re eligible, also help our NHS by getting your free flu and Covid vaccinations this Winter. I’ve been visiting local pharmacies at the frontline of jabbing residents.

Transport

I was pleased to be appointed to Parliament’s Transport Select Committee as getting people from A to B really is an important matter. I have been pushing for an early inquiry into buses outside of cities. These cross-party committees are where a lot of the detailed work of Parliament is done.

Weather

The weather really has been terrible since I became your MP. I assure you the two aren’t linked! September especially saw the highest level of rainfall in Bedfordshire since records began. I

have been in close touch with Anglian Water, the Environment Agency, the Council and Flood Re and have held meetings with the Flooding Minister. Sadly, with climate change, extreme weather is on the rise and we need to think carefully about resilience measures including natural solutions like tree planting to better protect communities.

Remembrance

It was an honour to lay a wreath at the War Memorial on Remembrance Sunday.

Dunstable students visit Westminster

I was pleased to welcome young people from Priory Academy to Westminster during UK Parliament Week. They had a tour round the historic building followed by a Q&A session with me.

Shoplifting

Police and Crime

Commissioner John Tizard and I went out on a shift with the Police at the White Lion Retail Park to find out more about the fightback on shoplifting. Locally, the crime rose by 14% last year. I was pleased to vote for additional funding to tackle shoplifting in the Budget, and will soon vote to introduce a new standalone offence of assaulting retail workers, and reverse a 2014 law to ensure all shoplifting cases under £200 are investigated.

If you have any issues that I can be of assistance with, please do not hesitate to get in touch on contact@alexmayer.co.uk or 01525 301390.

The Cloudy2Clear service only requires the glass to be replaced and not the whole window once the unit has failed. Stephen commented “Cloudy2Clear were able to assist our community through the last financial crisis in 2008 due to the savings that can be made in using our service. Unfortunately we might be going through something similar again soon and the public can rest assured that we will be there to help once again”.

Henry 1st

Founder of Dunstable

Henry, the youngest son of William the Conqueror, was born in England in 1068 and, following the successful “accidental death” of his brother William 2nd in the year 1100, was crowned three days later. He would prove to be a very different king from either his father or brother before him in that he considered himself to be English and felt that his reign should be fairer and more meritocratic than previously and that the native Saxons should not always be at the bottom of society if they could prove themselves worthy. He was also highly intelligent, ambitious, and rather avaricious with a strong financial acumen. But he’d inherited a country short of money due to his brother’s wanton squandering of his father’s wealth and he decided that the best way back to prosperity was through the medium of business - preferably international business - and quickly set about establishing how this might best be achieved. The first question was where should a suitable international business centre be placed ? There were various criteria to be satisfied such as :- it should be reasonably close to London (by then the capital of England); it should have its own economic market potential regarding food, agriculture and wool; and most importantly, it should have the opportunity to communicate with ports north, south, east and west so as to be able to trade with countries from Scandinavia round to Ireland, ie there needed to be a road system allowing such ports to be reached from this centre. But the only roads available at the time were those left over from the Romans 1000 years earlier since most others were little more than gloomy tracks through the forests which covered most of England then.

which could link with other routes to every corner of England.

It was also an area good for growing wheat, barley, oats and food in general ; it was good for the production of the highly prized English wool from sheep on the surrounding hills ; and it was good for the production of meat from cattle and sheep. There could also be the benefit of a leather tanning industry from animal hides. What is more, it was only 30 miles from London so was a perfect spot. It was too good to pass up.

The road network

A search was instigated and, finally, an abandoned spot was found. It happened to be in a corner of one of his own manors and ticked all the boxes. It was at the crossing of two long distance roads - the Roman Watling Street and the Neolithic Icknield Way - both of

So Henry allocated 450 acres from the south western corner of his Royal Manor of Houstone (today’s Houghton Regis) containing the all important crossroads and then set about getting his new town up and running and with suitable people to actually run it.

Remember that this was a completely new idea so there needed to be some very good incentives in order to attract hard headed businessmen to come to this unknown place and to sink their capital in some untried venture. It was a hard ask with many risks. So what were the incentives offered by Henry? They were :-

1) Offer land at Dunestaple (from the Saxon meaning “the market in the hills”), as 8 X 50 pole strips of land at right angles to the main road at a rental of one shilling per acre (5p an acre - the mind boggles!).

NB A pole (or rod or perch) is 16.5 feet so the strip allocated works out to be 2.5 acres, ie its yearly rental was half a crown !!)

2) Build a royal palace which he would visit and where he would hold court occasionally. People then - as now - were obsessed with “celebrity”. But then, it didn’t mean a well endowed female, or someone who could warble a few notes, or someone who could kick a football but it meant aristocracy - preferably

royalty. So he thought that the possibility of rubbing shoulders with royalty would be very attractive. It was and, in fact, Henry celebrated Christmas at his Kingsbury Palace in 1123 and 1132.

3) Grant any “burgess” (ie a businessman) coming to Dunestaple not only the rights and privileges afforded to any burgess anywhere, but the same rights and privileges as the burgesses of the City of London. In those feudal days, burgesses were already partly “free” men and could move around their areas so as to conduct their business - ie they were already part of an elite. But they couldn’t leave the country ; this privilege was restricted to the burgesses of the City of London - and, later, to the burgesses of Dunestaple so as to be able to conduct their international business. This incentive was the real biggy and would make the burgesses of Dunestaple part of the elite of the elite. It was irresistable.

People came in considerable numbers - businesses and homes were set up along the four roads making up the town ie North Street, South Street, East Street and West Street (our Councillors have always been very inventive with street names !) and with King Henry as the first Lord of the Manor (for extra quedos).

It is thought that all this happened at some time between 1106 and 1109. But it was a very successful start and Dunestaple became a business centre trading wool and other products for wine, fine cloth and exotic foods on an international scale with the different countries surrounding England. Dunestaple was very important (as a map of England drawn in 1250 shows). Henry’s queen, Matilda, was equally ambitious whilst all this was going on - but in a different way. She

had a bee in her bonnet regarding the newly established Augustinian religious order and felt that Henry’s new town should have such a community to give it the necessary spiritual gravitas. So as to generate additional significance to what he’d already done, she persuaded him that it would be the “jewel in his crown” ; that it would be the “icing on his cake” and that it would “put his new town on the map”. He didn’t really need much persuading so Matilda - at a date suggested to be something like 1115 - contacted an Augustinian canon, Bernard (who had already set up priories at Colchester and Aldgate), to come to Dunestaple and set another one up here. The area chosen was along East Street and opposite the 9 acre site of the “royal palace” (now occupied by the Old Palace Lodge and the former Norman King). By the time it was finally consecrated roughly 100 years later, it was a very large and very imposing building occupying all of Priory Gardens and the adjacent Priory Field. It certainly put Dunestaple (later to become Dunstaple then Dunstable) on the map. But was Henry a saint or a sinner? Admittedly, he clearly demonstrated many extremely positive qualities and was the chief architect in establishing what has become our town. But in addition to these qualities, he must also have had a tremendous libido since he holds the record for the greatest number of illegitimate children born to an English monarch - 21! He must have had a very strong constitution !

There is also the suggestion that he was fond of lavatorial humour, that he liked bawdy jokes and that his favourite performer was someone called Roland the Farter. Quite what his act consisted of is unknown : perhaps it was purely explosive. Or perhaps he performed a unique rendition of “God save the King” !

Where There’s A Wall, There’s A Way

Why our love of wallpaper is perennial, and what’s to come in 2025.

As we move into a new year, wallpaper is no longer simply a decorative feature from the past but a bold statement of personal style and creativity in home interiors.

Once regarded as oldfashioned, wallpaper has made a dramatic comeback and is evolving, offering a myriad of exciting options for homeowners and interior designers alike. From maximalist patterns to muted hues, wallpaper has become a canvas to express individuality in the home.

Styles in 2025

Designs range from classic to contemporary, allowing every space to feel unique. Botanical prints are still a firm favourite, with oversized leaves, tropical blooms and delicate floral motifs bringing the outdoors in, providing a lush, natural feel that works brilliantly in living rooms, bedrooms or even kitchens.

Geometric patterns are continuing to rise in popularity, offering a more modern touch. The use of sharp lines, bold shapes and three-dimensional effects adds depth and movement, making walls appear almost sculptural. Perfect for feature partitions or entire rooms, these arrangements can transform minimalist spaces into something far more striking.

Meanwhile, vintage-inspired designs are making a resurgence, giving homes a nostalgic yet elegant feel. From intricate damask patterns to art deco influences, these styles offer a refined sense of luxury, making them ideal for period homes, or for amateur designers looking to add a touch of timeless elegance to their interior.

Colour trends

When it comes to colours, the palette of 2025 is embracing both ends of the spectrum. Rich, deep tones such as emerald green, navy blue and burgundy are making waves, offering a sense of warmth and opulence to interiors. These shades work beautifully in larger rooms, where they can be paired with velvet furnishings and gold accents to create a cosy, luxurious atmosphere.

At the same time, pastel shades continue to have their place, providing a soft and calming effect. Blush pinks, sage greens

and muted blues are perfect for creating a serene environment, particularly in bedrooms or home offices where tranquillity is essential.

Textured wallpaper is also gaining traction, with materials such as silk, linen and grasscloth adding dimension and a tactile quality to walls. These options allow for a subtler approach to wallpaper, ideal for those who want an understated yet elegant look.

A bold future for walls

In 2025, wallpaper is more than just a backdrop - it’s a key design feature in the home. Whether you’re opting for bold patterns or subtle textures, wallpaper offers endless possibilities for creativity. With new designs, materials and colours to explore, it’s clear that where there’s a wall, there’s always a way to make a statement.

A Design for Life… The Kevin McCloud Column

Designer, writer and television presenter, Kevin McCloud leapt into our consciousness with his vastly successful Grand Designs show on Channel 4. This month, the affable architectural business owner talks about the 25th anniversary of the show, how styles have changed in that time, and keeping himself energised.

It’s hard to believe Grand Designs is celebrating a 25th anniversary. What began as a small venture, delving into the dreams and ambitions of those brave enough to build their homes, has become an enduring part of British culture, extending way beyond our TV screens. And

of course, I’m thrilled to see how it has captivated the minds of people across the world.

Since the first show in April 1999, I’ve been privileged to witness the evolution of design, architecture and personal ambition. And of course Grand Designs has never been solely about bricks and mortar, but also the stories of those behind the projects – people’s triumphs, tribulations and, most importantly, their passion. And these are the things that continue to drive me as much as the building itself.

To harness that energy, I’ve embraced a routine of constant learning. Design, like any creative field, is in a state of perpetual flux –what was considered cutting-edge in 1999 might be seen as outdated today.

As Grand Designs moves forward, what excites me most is that the fundamental principles of the show remain unchanged: celebrating the bold, the innovative and the personal. After 25 years, I’m as inspired as ever to continue this incredible journey.

New Year, New Garden

Want to be in the know with the gardening trends for 2025? Look no further…

Gardening is evolving to meet modern needs and aesthetics. In 2025, expect a fusion of sustainability, practicality and creativity in garden design. Here are six key trends to watch out for.

Sustainable gardening practices

With growing climate change concerns and resource depletion, gardeners will increasingly adopt eco-friendly practices such as rainwater harvesting, composting and using organic fertilisers. Wildlife-friendly gardening, including planting native species and creating habitats for pollinators, will also be a priority.

Carnivorous plants

With unique appeal and practical benefits, these fascinating varieties – think Venus flytraps and pitcher plants – naturally control insect populations, reducing the need for chemical pesticides. Striking appearance and unusual behaviour make them captivating additions.

Moon gates

Inspired by traditional Chinese architecture, moon gates are elegant structures that add a touch of mystique and tranquillity to gardens, creating a sense of enclosure and guiding visitors towards a focal point.

They can be made from a variety of materials, such as stone, wood, or metal and are perfect for framing views or creating a sense of passage between different garden areas. And they’re set to be popular in 2025!

Resilient gardens

As weather patterns become more unpredictable, resilience will be a key theme in garden design with a focus on creations that can withstand extreme weather conditions, such as heavy rainfall, strong winds and prolonged droughts. This includes hardy, droughttolerant plants, improvements in soil health, the incorporation of features like windbreaks, and permeable surfaces to manage water effectively.

Edibles in hanging baskets

The trend of growing edibles in small spaces will continue to flourish, with hanging baskets playing a central role for herbs, strawberries,

tomatoes and other compact crops.

Not only does this maximise space – making it ideal for urban gardens and balconies –it also means produce is easy to access.

Minimalist garden design

Characterised by clean lines, uncluttered spaces and a focus on quality over quantity, minimalist gardens offer a calming retreat from busy lives.

The trick is to emphasise a careful selection of a few key plants, often with a focus on evergreens and architectural forms.

Hard landscaping materials like stone, gravel and concrete also play a significant role, creating a serene, low-maintenance environment.

++

As we approach 2025, these gardening trends reflect a shift towards sustainability, resilience and simplicity. By embracing these ideas, gardeners can create beautiful, functional spaces that are ready for the future.

Greenfingers… the Alan Titchmarsh column

He’s a magnificent broadcaster, gifted gardener, brilliant author and all-round horticultural visionary. This month, Alan Titchmarsh talks about looking ahead to 2025 and renewing some ideas and ideals.

As we stand on the cusp of 2025, it feels like the perfect moment to reassess our gardening practices, renew our ideas and perhaps even rethink some of our outdoor philosophies.

Gardening has always been about more than just plants; it’s about the connection between people, nature and the world around us. As we look to the future, it’s important to pause and consider not just what we want to grow, but how we want to grow it.

The past few years have seen a significant shift in how we view our gardens with more and more of us beginning

to appreciate the broader impact of our gardening choices.

We’re becoming increasingly aware of the journey our food takes before it reaches our plates, considering not only the miles, but also the resources consumed along the way. It’s led to a growing interest in locally-sourced produce, both in terms of what we buy and what we grow ourselves.

I’ve long been an advocate of organic gardening – for over four decades, now –and it’s heartening to see so many embracing this same approach, although going organic is just one piece of the puzzle.

Supporting local produce and markets is equally important, reducing our reliance on food that’s travelled halfway around the world. Remember, it’s not just about avoiding pesticides or synthetic fertilisers, it’s about fostering a deep, sustainable connection to the land we cultivate and the food we consume.

Another crucial aspect of modern gardening is ensuring that our gardens are not just for us

but for the wildlife that shares this space. We’re custodians, responsible for creating environments where native flora and fauna can thrive alongside the exotic and ornamental plants we’ve come to love.

There’s beauty in the diversity of our gardens – a balance that allows room for all, from the humble hedgehog to the resplendent butterfly.

As we move into 2025, I encourage everyone to think about how their garden fits into the larger environmental picture, being not just a plot of land to be cultivated but a small piece of the planet we have the privilege to nurture.

So, as you plan your garden this year, think beyond the aesthetic. Consider how you can support local ecosystems, reduce your environmental footprint and create a space that is as beneficial to wildlife as it is to you.

Yet most of all, in 2025, enjoy it!

Lonely This Christmas

For many, Christmas can be an isolating and melancholy period. Beating those festive blues isn’t easy, but these techniques can help raise your spirits.

Stay in touch

If you’re forced to be physically alone this Christmas Day, you can still connect with others (even if it’s via video calls or social media).

A short video of a beloved grandson opening the present you sent, a visit to a neighbour, or a quick drink at the nearest pub will help you ease your loneliness.

In fact, you might be surprised how simply sharing in the cheer of others can bring a smile to your own face.

Help others

Volunteering is a fantastic way to feel useful and use your time in a positive way. Serving dinner at a homeless shelter, collecting money for a charity, or even making crafts to sell at your local church fete will foster a sense of purpose and remind you that there are many others who also struggle this time of year.

Be thankful

It’s easy to become wrapped up in our own problems, especially if we have a lot of time alone to think. This is why it can help to focus on all the wonderful experiences and gifts you have received in your life.

Keeping a gratitude journal, or even just contemplate one thing each day you are thankful for, no matter how small, can help shift your perspective.

Reach out

The wonderful thing about the holiday season is that there are so many events and opportunities to meet others. You could join the local choir or theatrical group, or even just watch a carol concert, nativity or pantomime that’s playing in your area.

Even attending Midnight Mass or a Christmas Day service can help remind us what Christmas is truly about, and there is no better way of experiencing that than in the embracing arms of your community.

Accept your feelings

Putting on a charade of happiness for others can be exhausting and, in these moments, it is best to just accept how you feel.

Everyone has experienced conflicting emotions during the festive period – it is a milestone in the year we uses as a point to reflect and contemplate, so remember the darker moments aren’t just your own.

So be kind to yourself, eat your favourite food and watch whatever TV you want - a luxury many will wish they had when they’re forced to watch an entire afternoon of Only Fools and Horses reruns!

Greetings

from Christ Church Dunstable!

Lego in the Dark

There are three levels of pain: pain, excruciating pain, and stepping on a Lego brick.

We have children in our home and, where you have children, you have toys. While our children are great at getting toys out, they’re not great at putting them away again. The post-Christmas period is often a challenging one as new toys are strewn across the house.

It is particularly tricky at night when you’re trying to navigate the house in the dark. Sadly, for the kids, most toys can’t bear the weight of a fully grown man. Sadly, for me, that’s not true of the humble Lego brick. Stepping on one of those in the middle of the night really tests the control you have over your tongue.

While I can usually get around ok in my own home in the dark easily enough, it’s another thing getting around in an unfamiliar place. In those situations, what I need is someone with a light that can show me the way to go.

And that is the message of Christmas.

The Bible tells us that spiritually we are all walking around in the dark. If God is the light, when we push him away, it is like we are shutting out the light. As a consequence, we don’t know the way back. We are stumbling around stepping on the Lego of life as we mess up and make mistakes. We end up hurting ourselves, and others. Even though we have chosen the darkness, we are lost.

In the moments when we want to return to the light and come back to God, we can’t because we don’t know the way!

Enter Jesus.

In Matthew 4:16 we read, “The people living in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned.”

And Jesus says of himself, in John 8:12, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.”

The message of Christmas is that the God of light, enters the darkness of the world, shines brightly and comes to those stumbling around and invites them to follow him so that he might show them the way back to God. Only Jesus can do this for us he is the only one who knows the way because he is the only one to come from there.

Our prayer is that this Christmas, you will come and enjoy the light of the world for yourselves, maybe for the first time. May that light lead you out of the darkness to an eternal reunion with the God of light. Do join us for one of our Christmas services and discover this for yourself.

Warmly yours, Steve Neal, Community Engagement Pastor

Ring out the old and bring in the new with these top tips for selling your unwanted clothes online.

Get snap happy

As buyers are unable to try on the clothes, your images need to to do the selling for you.

Try to use natural light so as not to distort the colours and keep your setting as clean and uncluttered as possible.

Upload as many angles of the item as you can including close ups of any key details, and remember that some platforms specifically ask for specifics such as soles of shoes, labels and boxes, as proof of brand.

Pay attention to detail When it comes to describing your item, don’t hold back. Include size, brand, colour, material and condition (new or used etc.). Also, be sure to mention any flaws, such as a missing button or small tear – this will build trust between you and your buyers along with limiting the chance of returns.

You can also add a personal narrative such as: ‘ideal for date night’ or ‘boss it in the boardroom’.

Use buzzwords

‘Boho’ is going to be a big trend for 2025, so if you have items in this category, use that phrase to boost your search hits. Also, consider categories such as ‘casual’, ‘formal’ or ‘sportswear’, and if your clothing boasts a hot brand name, big it up!

Be

fluid

Think about the experience you want your consumers to have much in the way any shops or fashion house would.

Organise your items into outfits and sections so that perspective customers can find what they are seeking easily, and if someone shows interest in an item (such as favouriting it), don’t be afraid to reach out to ask if you can assist them in any way.

Service matters

Keep your inventory organised, maintain the condition of your items and, most importantly, keep on top of your orders.

With online selling in any sector, customer reviews are everything as buyers don’t want to waste their time or money. If

using a reliable delivery service helps keep you on top of orders and saves weekly trips to the post office, then consider the extra cost.

Finally, consider a personal touch such as a specific colour of tissue paper or a thank you note.

Get social Social media is an excellent way to reach out to new customers. Share your listings on platforms such as Facebook and Instagram, and if you want to get really savvy with these tools, utilise fashion hashtags and join online groups which focus on buying and selling clothes.

Gordon Ramsay’s Cranberry Mince Pies

A Christmas staple with a cranberry twist, can you avoid these magnificent mince pies?

Method

1. Put the flour, icing sugar, butter and orange zest into a food processor and whiz to fine crumbs. Add the egg and whiz for a few seconds until the mixture forms clumps and you can press it together into a ball. If necessary, add a teaspoon or two of water to bring the mixture together.

2. Turn onto a very lightly floured surface and knead briefly until smooth. Wrap in cling film and chill for at least 30 minutes, or until firm.

3. For the filling, turn the mincemeat into a bowl and stir in the dried cranberries. Roll out the pastry on a lightly floured surface to the thickness of a £1 coin. Using an 8cm fluted cutter, cut out 24 rounds and use to line

two 12-hole non-stick mince pie tins.

4. Re-roll the trimmings to the same thickness and stamp out 24 stars or Christmas trees, with an appropriate cutter, for the tops. Put a dessertspoonful (2 tsp) filling into each pastry case, then press the tops in position. Chill for at least 20 minutes. Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 180°C/Gas 4.

5. Brush the tops with the eggwash, then bake the mince pies for 15–20 minutes until the pastry is golden and crisp. Let cool for a few minutes before removing from the tins and transferring to a wire rack to cool. Store an airtight container, warming slightly before serving with a dusting of sugar.

Ingredients

• 250g plain flour, plus extra to dust

• 25g icing sugar

• 125g chilled unsalted butter, diced finely

• Grated zest of 1 orange

• 1 medium egg, lightly beaten

• 1–3 tsp ice-cold water (if needed)

Filling:

• 400g jar good-quality mincemeat

• 150g dried cranberries

To finish:

• 1 egg yolk, beaten with 1 tsp water (eggwash), to glaze

• Icing sugar or caster sugar, to dust

Textured Seascape Collage and Acrylics

You will need white tissue paper (used for wrapping), acrylic paints and PVA glue. Mix yellow ochre and white to paint your beach area. Dab a tiny bit of black paint with blue to create dark blue. Then mix a bit of white with your original blue to get lighter blue. Now you have 3 tones. Begin with the dark colour at the top and blend in the other two colours so it gets lighter close to the beach. Dry it with a hairdryer. Dilute your PVA with water until it’s a single cream consistency. Paint the area you’re collaging with the PVA and begin ripping your tissue paper into strips and placing them onto the PVA. Use your brush to push the tissue down to create interesting shapes and cover with the glue. Collage your waves just past the boundary between the water and the beach and let it dry. Trim the edges off so it’s nice and neat.

The Greenest of gifts

You want Christmas to be special, but not at the expense of the environment, so that rules out about 98% of the high street.

Fret not though, a sumptuous festive period of sympathetic sustainability is yours if you take the time to look around.

Handcrafted and upcycled gifts

One of the most environmentally friendly ways to give a gift is to make it yourself or buy something handcrafted. Upcycled gifts, made from repurposed materials, are not only unique but also help reduce waste.

Whether it’s a homemade candle, a knitted scarf or jewellery crafted from recycled metals, handmade presents can add a personal touch while being kind to the planet.

Experience gifts

Gifting experiences rather than material items is an excellent way to avoid waste altogether, so consider treating your loved ones to a day out, a workshop or a class in something they enjoy.

Whether it’s a pottery session, a cooking class or tickets to a local theatre performance, experiences can create lasting memories without leaving a trail of

wrapping paper and plastic behind.

The greenest presents you can give this Christmas.

Zero-waste starter kits

Encouraging friends and family to adopt more eco-friendly habits can be as simple as gifting one of these, which include reusable items such as beeswax wraps, bamboo toothbrushes, stainless steel water bottles and cloth bags.

Sustainable fashion

Not only will the gift help reduce reliance on, for example, single-use plastics, you’ll also be instilling in them a green philosophy going forward.

Plants and seeds

For the green-fingered loved ones in your life, plants and seeds make thoughtful, ecofriendly gifts. Whether it’s a potted herb garden for a windowsill, a houseplant or a pack of wildflower seeds to attract pollinators, these gifts contribute positively to the environment. Planting organic elements also offer a connection to nature and the joy they provide can be experienced throughout the year.

Opting for eco-friendly fashion is another way to give greener gifts this Christmas. Look for items made from organic, natural fibres like cotton, wool or hemp. Alternatively, second-hand or vintage clothing makes a stylish and sustainable present, helping to reduce the demand for fast fashion and the waste it creates.

Charity donations

Finally, if you’re unsure of what to buy someone, why not donate to a cause close to their heart? Charity gifts can range from sponsoring an animal to contributing to tree-planting projects. Many organisations offer certificates or updates on how your donation is making a difference, allowing your gift to have a long-lasting, positive impact.

Remember, the best present you can give to present or future generations is a healthier planet!

Bedfordshire’s Night Sky Looking Up!

December 2024 & January 2025

Catch Jupiter at its Closest to Earth for 2024:

On Saturday 7 December Jupiter reaches opposition. It’ll be at its closest point to Earth for the year, and at is brightest in our night sky. Watch the biggest planet in our solar system rise in the east at dusk. It’ll climb high into the sky above the eastern horizon through the evening, switching south-east then south by midnight. Jupiter is easy to see with the naked eye as a bright star-like object. Binoculars show Jupiter as a white disc flanked by up to four of its bright Galilean moons – Io, Europa, Ganymede and Calisto.

Venus Becomes a Christmas Star: Venus, the brightest planet in our night sky, become a dazzling spectacle during early evenings this winter. By Christmas it’ll be high up above the horizon to your southwest, easily visible from about 5pm until when it sets just after 7:30pm. The immense brightness of Venus is down to its thick cloudy atmosphere. Sunlight bounces off the cloud tops making it appear as a bright Christmas ‘star’.

See Three Meteor Showers: Enjoy a barrage of shooting stars this winter. Look to your southeast on the evening of 13 -14 December to see the bright trails of the Geminids under a near full moon. The Ursids light the way high up towards the north on the night of 21-22 December. The best of our trio of showers though is on the night of 2 – 3 January when the Quadrantids peak overhead.

New Course Of History Talks

The Dunstable Tuesday Group are offering a new course, commencing 14th January.

SOCIETY & CULTURE IN 19TH CENTURY BRITAIN

The 19th century, particularly the Victorian era, was one of rapid development and innovation. Britain changed from a rural, agricultural country to an urban, industrialised one taking many years for our forebears to adjust to the new conditions. Although it was a peaceful (or was it? We fought 50+ wars during Victoria’s reign) and prosperous time, there were still issues within the social structure as society was hierarchical. Britain became a powerful nation with a rich culture.

The course will examine :-

Class structure and its affect on society (including mobility and emigration etc.);

Pleasures and pastimes in Victorian Britain; The aftermath of the Industrial Revolution and child labour;

Established religion and nonconformity (religious revival);

The British Empire; Culture, art & morality; Important political events (abolition of slavery etc.); Holiday traditions; Crime and punishment; Newspapers and the media; Shopping 1800 style; Transport incl railways, ships and airplanes/balloons.

Presented by Ian Waller the course will commence on 14th January 2025 and will run weekly from 10.30 to 12.30, with a week off over half term.

The price is £60 for the ten weeks, or £7 weekly. The course will be held at Pioneer Hall, Manchester Place, Dunstable, LU6 1HT.

To register please contact Carole Smart on smart. carole@talk21.com or 07917 083850.
