Tigers ready to roar back to playoffs By Evan Grice evan.grice@ardmoreite.com
Numbers say a lot about things, especially when it comes to football. So it should be very obvious what Ardmore’s large senior class number says about the Tigers’ squad coming into this season: there’s a lot of experience and motivation. The 2018-19 Tigers’ football team will feature a staggering 28 seniors, including multiple two-way players. According to coach Josh Newby, having so many seniors isn’t anything to worry about, it’s something to be very excited about.
“When you have 28 seniors on an Ardmore High School football team, that’s a good problem to have,” he said. “I’m very excited for this season. This is a really neat group who has a lot of team chemistry. They love working for their coaches and working for their teammates as well.” In order for the Tigers to make the State Quarterfinals for a third consecutive season, they will be relying on several key returning players. Tero Roberts will be back for his senior run with the Tigers, after playing the majority of last season under center. Creed Cox will also return for his junior year, after he stepped in at the quarterback position during
games in which Roberts was injured last season. Also returning will be Cameron Petties, who will look to build on a solid junior campaign where he finished as of the top-three leading rushers for the Tigers. Brayden Bryant will also be aiming for a solid senior season on the offensive and defensive line along with junior Ethan Lyles. “We have a lot of players that people are already familiar with,” Newby said. “I’m looking at a few guys like Ethan Lyles this season at defensive end. Jermaine Scallion is another guy I’m excited to see this season at fullback and defensive end. I’m anxious to see SEE TIGERS, PAGE 6

how guys like Derek Peters and Jaamarre Williams perform this season, because we’re going to need those guys as well as others to step up if we’re going to be a good football team.” While the Tigers finished last season 9-3 overall and were district champions, the way the season ended still leaves a bad taste in the mouth of many Ardmore coaches, players and fans. The Noble Bears eliminated the Tigers at Noble Stadium in Ardmore in the Class 5A State Quarterfinals by a score of 28-14. But, this season the Tigers won’t have to wait until the postseason to get their chance at revenge on the Bears, as they have been added to their district competition with Del City being switched out in the process as the Eagles were moved to 6A. Ardmore will face off with the Bears on Oct. 26 in the next to last game of the regular season. It’s the start of district play which could prove to be the most difficult as the Tigers will open the district portion of their schedule at home against Lawton
MacArthur on Sept. 21., the only team to beat them last year in district play. Altus, Duncan and Western Heights will also be district home games this season, while the Tigers will have to go on the road to take on El Reno and Southeast. “This group is self-motivated, and that’s what I love about these kids,” Newby said. “We have an extremely tough district. We start with MacArthur and then we have Altus the next week. On down the line you have Noble, who made the semifinals last year. Duncan is going to be better as well this year. El Reno on the road is going to also be a tough test for us.” “Every year in this district it’s a battle,” Newby added. “You just have to be on point non-stop, and our kids realize that. We’re going to prepare each week and be ready for anything that these teams will have for us.” The non-district portion of the schedule will see the Tigers open the season with the traditional rivalry game against the Ada Cougars on Aug. 31 at Noble Stadium, before going on the road against Durant and McAlester to finish non-district play. Ardmore’s road district games will take place on Oct. 5, 12 and 26 with Southeast and Noble facing off with the Tigers in the second and third road contests.

Indians ready for new challenges in district Need to know Season Opener: 7:30 p.m. Aug. 24 vs. Elgin Head coach: Joe Price, 4th season Last season: 9-3 (lost 42-30 vs. Jones, Playoffs 2nd round) Did you know?:Plainview has made at least the second round of the playoffs every year under Coach Price. The Indians will also have several new faces in District 3A-2 this season as the Marlow Outlaws, Bethel Wildcats, and Douglass Trojans will be joining the district. Plainview eliminated the Outlaws last season in the first round of the playoffs.
Schedule Aug. 24 Aug. 31 Sept. 7 Sept. 21 Sept. 28 Oct. 5 Oct. 12 The 2018 Plainview Indians will be led by fourth-year coach Joe Price and will be looking to reclaim the district 3A-2 title after finishing second last season. Plainview went 9-3 during the 2017 campaign. Oct. 18 Oct. 26 There will be a total of 12 senior players this season for the Indians on the varsity roster suiting up. Over the last few years, winning and Plainview High School varsity football have gone hand-in-hand. Since coach Joe Price arrived for the 2015 season, the Indians have won at least one playoff game in each of the years he’s been in charge, including a run to the 2016 state finals, where the Indians finished as state-runner up.
This season though, the Indians will enter coming off the heels of a 9-3 season, which included a second round playoff exit against the hands of Jones High School, as well as having to settle for second place in district play behind Sulphur. But there have been several changes not just to the Indians, but to the landscape of Class 3A this season as well. Plainview will no longer
have to worry about a possible rematch with the Longhorns in the playoffs as Jones has dropped to Class 2A this season. But, with the drop of one team comes the addition of others as Bethel, Purcell, Marlow and Douglass High School have been added to the Indians district schedule. The Indians will be all too familiar with the Marlow Outlaws, as they eliminated them in the opening SEE PLAINVIEW, PAGE 8

round of the playoffs last season at Plainview Stadium. “In this district, there are basically four teams who are going to be ranked in the top-15 in the state,” Price said. “When you throw good schools into the mix with teams who are on the rise, it makes for a very tough deal. You
have to be ready every week for a tough game.” As for the Indians themselves, they might have graduated All-State quarterback Spencer Somerville, but they have come back with multiple athletes more than capable of carrying the offensive load this season under center, as well as other positions. “Offensively, Blake Nowell is a big playmaker for us,” Price said. “No matter who is playing quarterback for us whether its
Payton Webber, Brock Parham or Caleb Burson, they are going to be good. We’ve also got two very good running backs that can take the ball and go the distance.” Last season Parham totaled 214 yards passing with three touchdowns and zero interceptions. His best performance of the season came against the Dickson Comets on Oct. 19 when he went 9-for-11 passing for 153 yards and two touchdowns. Webber played last season for

the Davis Wolves, as he played in multiple games under center. Davis eventually made the Class 2A state semifinals. The Indians will be looking for Nowell to improve on a solid sophomore season in which he carried the ball 22 times for 254 yards with three touchdowns. He also had 40 catches last season for 410 yards and seven touchdowns as a wide receiver, averaging 10.3 yards per catch. “Our offensive line is going
to get after people,” Price added. “On defense, Britton Sperry and Jake Guerin are going to be guys we’re depending on this season. Lane Ross is another one of those guys. With all of those guys mixed in, I think we are going to be very solid on both sides of the ball this season.” The Indians caught an unexpected break this year as their opening game was changed from a road game to a home game against Elgin on Aug. 24.

LONE GROVE
Horns enter 2018 under new head coach By Evan Grice evan.grice@ardmoreite.com
LONE GROVE — There’s a new era beginning for the Lone Grove varsity football team this season. Brad O’Steen will be stepping in to take charge of the Longhorns, after being away from the coaching spotlight the last four years. O’Steen will bring with him a resume of success following his time at Wynnewood, Maysville and Ma-
dill High School. While there’s already plenty of excitement brewing this season, O’Steen said he’s just focusing on making sure his players improve everyday in anything they do. “I’m very excited and very thankful to be in Lone Grove as the new head coach,” he said. “We’ve had a lot of great support so far during the summer and the preseason, and we’re just ready to get started.”
“Our biggest thing to the players is making sure they constantly improve each day,” O’Steen added. “For us it’s about building something special here right now so it can continue into the future.” Lone Grove will be looking to improve this season following a 3-7 campaign in 2017 in which the Longhorns narrowly missed the postseason. An 0-5 start to the season was slightly made up for
during district play when the Longhorns got victories over Dickson, and Madill, only to lose to Pauls Valley in the season finale, denying them the fourth and final playoff spot. In order for the Longhorns to make it back to the
playoffs for the first time since 2015, they’ll have to go through some familiar foes, as well as some new faces in district play. While Lone Grove will still be facing off with old district rivals such as Dickson and Madill in non-dis-
trict play, they will have to navigate their way through new district matches which include Marlow, Bethel and Douglass High School out of Oklahoma City. Last season the Trojans went 6-5 but managed to SEE HORNS, PAGE 11

Bethel was the only team from last season which didn’t make the playoffs, finishing with a 1-9 record. Lone Grove will also have to worry about defending district champion and state semifinalist, from a year ago, Sulphur, as well as the
Plainview Indians and the Pauls Valley Panthers. Lone Grove has not made the playoffs since their history making run to the state semifinals in 2015. The deep playoff run was the first time in school history a Longhorns football team had made the state semifinals. “It’s a very tough district, there’s no doubt about that,” O’Steen said. “With this being my first year, I’ve had to rely on a lot of information from the coaches as far as who a lot

It’s gone a long way in developing these athletes as players.” Dickson will open the season Friday night, Aug. 24, on the road against Lone Grove. After a bye week, the Comets will make their home debut on Sept. 7 against the Ringling Blue Devils. Following their last

non-district game against Madill on Sept. 14, the Comets will open district play against Coalgate. Dickson will host Marietta, Tishomingo and Lindsay in district. “I don’t believe the players have thought about the playoffs,” Day said. We earned a sample size of what it was like to win last year, and we’ve moved on from the past, and are ready to embrace today.”

RINGLING
Blue Devils aiming for success with new coach By Bill Baker sports@ardmoreite.com
The Ringling Blue Devils have a new coach. Phil Koons took the head coaching job following the retirement of Steve Justus. Koons brings with him a solid
coaching resume which spans more than 20 years in Oklahoma. Koons coached at Tuttle for 21 years and won two State Championships while there. And, he is excited to be the new Ringling head coach because the Blue Devil tradition is important
to him. “This is a great opportunity for me,” Koons said. “There’s a lot of history here in Ringling, and these kids know how to play football. I’m especially proud to have a solid coaching staff too. Richie Gandy is a great
coach. You can’t go wrong with Gandy as one of your coaches. “Two former players of mine, Cooper Koons (son) and Dawson Bassett both graduated recently and I’m very happy to have them as assistants,” Koons added. “They both know how I coach
and what I expect. We also have Chris Hale, who is a former Ringling football player, and he will be helping us a lot. I’m surrounded by good people in the coaching department.” Ringling will not see much SEE DEVILS, PAGE 31

MARIETTA
Indians ready for new journey in Class 2A By Evan Grice evan.grice@ardmoreite.com
MARIETTA — With the Marietta Indians dropping to class 2A this season, there was a need to find someone who could be up for the challenge of handling the obstacles of this season. Sam Powers was more than ready to answer the call. Powers will enter his first season in charge of the Indians football program, as Marietta navigates its way through the Class 2A ranks. “This has been an extreme blessing to get to come back so close to home.” Powers said. “I’m excited and ready to attack district 2A-8 this season. It’s a very tough district with a lot of well coached teams. It’s going to be a challenge every week.” “Our kids have done everything possible to build on the success they had last year,” Powers added.
“They really feel like they are a dark horse in this district, and are putting in the work in order to be considered a playoff team this season.” Powers is a graduate of Elmore City-Pernell High School, and comes to Marietta with plenty of coaching experience from his time at Frederick, Velma-Alma and Norman North as an offensive coordinator. During his time in Norman, Powers was part of a team that made the state finals in Class 6A. Last season in Class 3A, Marietta managed to win its first three games of the season. Eventually the Indians finished at 6-5 overall and made the playoffs, falling in the first round against the Lindsay Leopards. The appearance in the postseason was the first for the Indians since the 2015 season last year. Now, Marietta will face a new SEE MARIETTA, PAGE 17

set of challenges as they will be dropping to Class 2A, where they will be joined by Davis, Comanche, Coalgate, Dickson, Kingston, Lindsay, and Tishomingo in district 8. “We have stressed from the beginning how important each day of preparation is going to be in this district,” Powers said. “It’s going to take our best shot every week to rise to the challenges this district is going to present
to us. District 2A-8 is one of the toughest districts in the state in my opinion. But, our men welcome this challenge and are excited to put in the work to take on these challenges.” Offensively the Indians will be running out of a pistol formation, while going with a 3/4 scheme on the defensive side of the ball. Marietta will be returning a total of seven starters on offense and seven defensive starters. Among the players who will be looking to make an impact this season will be Zack Spanglo, Carlos Whibbey, Cody Hicks,

“I think the playoffs are a real possibility for this team right now,” Powers said. “Marietta already has a great football tradition in my opinion. Expectations are high and with good reason. Making the playoffs continues the tradition here. It also helps build the culture around this program, and it adds another brick to the foundation at the same time.”

WILSON
Eagles hungry for playoffs in 2018 season
By Bill Baker sports@ardmoreite.com
The Wilson Eagles begin their third year in Class B 8-man football with a new football coach (Kenny Ridley) and hopes of great things to come.
In 2016, their first year in 8-man, the Eagles won their final two conference games and made the playoffs for the first time in several years. Last season Wilson slipped to 4-5. Although, they again won their
final two games, they did not qualify for a post-season spot. A new season always brings excitement and opportunities for new beginnings, and 2018 is just that for the Eagles and their fans. Ridley brings plenty of coaching experience to Wilson.
Eagle fans are hopeful that an added football insight and mentality led by a coach with plenty of experience will help bring a new tradition of winning to Skinny Stewart Stadium. “We have a good group of about 26 players ready and excited to
get the season underway,” Ridley said. “The 8-man football is a little new to me, but I can already see opportunities where we can go out and be competitive. In fact SEE EAGLES, PAGE 33

SULPHUR
Bulldogs full of momentum after semifinal run By Bill Baker sports@ardmoreite.com
Despite losing a number of key people to graduation, the Sulphur Bulldogs promise to be in the hunt again for a District Championship and a trek through the Class 3A playoffs in 2018. Players can be replaced at Sulphur, and they still maintain one of the top coaching staffs in the state. Head coach Jim Dixon will enter his 44th season at the helm and his 46th season overall. The Bulldogs have about 35 players with five returning offensive starters and six starters from the defense. Although they lost what Dixon calls “an excellent senior class,”
plenty of athletes are back to fight for playing time. Dixon was quick to point out that the three losses the 2016 Bulldogs team suffered and the two losses the 2017 team had were all against state ranked teams. But this season the Bulldogs are ready for another run with hopes the ball bounces a in their favor this year. “We have lost to some very good teams the last two seasons,” Dixon said. “Some of those teams we came back and defeated later on. But we’re looking to 2018. We have some really good players on this year’s team.” Much of the Sulphur offense The 2018 Sulphur Bulldogs will have eight seniors returning this season from a team that made it to will revolve around senior Trey the Class 3A state semifinals last year. HEALDTON
Bulldogs looking to extend playoff streak
By Bill Baker sports@ardmoreite.com
This year’s Healdton Bulldog football team will be youthful. In his seventh year as Bulldog head coach, Mark Barrett returns just three seniors and five juniors from a team that finished 8-3 in 2017. Healdton won their first six games last year before falling to Ringling in week eight. The real stunner came two weeks later when Healdton lost to Apache by one point late in the game. Apache was successful on a two-point conversion attempt that gave them a 22-21 victory. That loss sent Healdton on the road for the opening round of the Class A playoffs where they dropped a 48-35 decision to Oklahoma Christian Academy of Edmond. The Bulldogs will need to develop quickly to be ready for another tough run in District
A-4. But Barrett believes in his team’s hard work as they prepare for another playoff run. “We want to stick with the ‘Wishbone’ on offense because it has worked well for us,” Barrett said. “Colton Pickelsimer will line up as our quarterback this season. He played halfback last year but will be running things this year. He (Colton) has a lot of experience because many of our games early in the 2017 season were over by halftime.” “When we would put in our second team, Colton got quite a few reps,” Barrett added. “Josh Harvey is going to be returning at fullback as well for us. He was solid at that position last year.” The offensive line is such a key component in making the “Wishbone” run well. Barrett will also have senior Ethan Lindsey and sophomore Kolton Cox up front returning SEE HEALDTON, PAGE 24

In addition, Kiser is a force to reckon with on the defensive side of the ball. Last year he recorded 150 tackles. Those figures speak volumes for Dixon as he prepares for the upcoming season. “Trey is a great football player,” Dixon said.

this season. Sophomore Wade Etter will likely start at the tight end slot for the Bulldogs. “Being able to get our non-starters lots of playing time last year will make a big difference for us this year,” Barrett said. “Although much of our team is pretty young, they have almost a half season of work under their belt. We have an eight-team district again this year.” “What that means is we have to win four games to make it to the playoffs,” Barrett added. “That’s our initial goal. Sophomore Israel Shinn was singled out by Barrett as a good defensive back with excellent speed and good hands. Barrett believes he could develop into a solid player. “We had a good summer pride program this year with a good group of players participating,” Barrett said. “We compete in a very good district, especially with Dibble dropping down from 2A.” “We want to go out and play hard every week,” Barrett added. “As we move through the season, I believe we will see a lot of improvement in our execution and skill levels. I think a lot of people are going to be surprised about how well this team comes together and competes from week to week.” Healdton will open the season on Aug. 31 at home against Marietta, before taking on the Comanche Indians in another home contest. For the first time in 30 years , the Davis Wolves will start a football season without a Weber as head coach. Jody Weber coached the Wolves for 17 seasons from 2001 to 2017. Davis won back-to-back state Championships in 2013 and 2014 under Jody Weber. Jody finished with a 174-29 record as head coach the winningest-coach in Davis history. Prior to Jody’s time at the helm his dad, Joe Weber, coached the Wolves from 1988-2000. He had a 134-35 record and led Davis to state championships in 1988 and 2000. The traditionally powerful
“Wishbone offensive attack began in Davis in 1974 under coach Mickey Hoy. Hoy led the Wolves from 19741987 and a 1986 state championship. The Davis Wolves have qualified for the state playoffs for 34 consecutive years, which is tied for the most in Oklahoma with Thomas who had its own streak from 1953-1987. There were no playoffs following the 1954 season. The good news for Davis fans is that a proven coach in the Wolf family has taken over as the new head coach. Greg Parker was named to replace Jody Weber. Parker will be starting his 22nd season as a Davis coach. SEE DAVIS, PAGE 26

He has previously been the team’s defensive coordinator since 2000. “I understand the Davis program,” Parker said. “We have a great process in place here at Davis, and it is the kids that make everything work so well.
They understand the way things are and that they must work very hard to be successful. That is why so little is ever said about winning.” “This team has grown up with the ‘Wishbone’ and that won’t change,” Parker added. “Everyone is excited about a new football season, and they are appreciative of the opportunity they

have to play in a program like we have here at Davis.” According to Parker, senior Devon Gregg will run the offense at quarterback. He moves there after playing at halfback last season. Senior Jared Brown will start at fullback and double-up on defense. Senior Dakota Coberly will start at halfback on offense and at cornerback on defense.
The spirit, the will to win, and the will to excel are the things that
Along the Davis front line will be senior Jace Idleman as he returns at center and will also play on the defensive line. Senior George Thomas will also play on both sides of the ball along the Wolf front, and senior Brendan Hobbs will also operate in the trenches for Davis. Junior Cooper Webb, who has spent the last two seasons at nose guard will
likely move to fullback on offense and to linebacker on defense. Senior Caiden Coleman, who missed much of 2017 with a broken leg, will also play on offense and defense this season. “Although we have changed head coaches, nothing else should change,” Parker said. “Like I said, I love the process we have in place
here at Davis, and it’s an honor to be head coach.” The Wolves will be looking to improve on a solid 2017 season in which they made the state semifinals, finishing with an overall record of 10-3, which included an undefeated district championship for the Wolves. Davis will open the season on Aug. 31 against the Lone Grove Longhorns.

FOX
Foxes seek return to winning ways in 2018
By Bill Baker sports@ardmoreite.com
The Fox Foxes hope to prove their 2017 season was a fluke. The Foxes, a mainstay in the playoffs for years fell to 2-9 in 2017 with their only wins coming against Bray-Doyle and Wilson in consecutive weeks last October. Despite the losing record, the Foxes were able to make the playoffs once again, but were defeated by Carnegie in the first round on the road. This was following a 3-8 2016 season the year before. However this preseason, head coach Brent Phelps is seeing some positive signs of a team that could possibly be on the rise in the very near future.
Phelps is hoping this year’s team is the one on the scoreboard with big numbers by their name. “We have some young men stepping up and becoming leaders right now,” he said. “They are practicing strong, and they are learning our system quickly. It’s a fast game we play. Offensively we have to block and hit the holes quickly. And defensively we have to wrap up good, especially on the perimeter. These players are beginning to understand how to play the game fundamentally well.” Offensively, senior Jimmy Bivings will be running the show at quarterback. Senior William Miller will line up behind Bivings at running back, and blocking up front for
the Foxes at center will be senior Ethan Kinsey. “These three players have several years as starters,” Phelps said. “We expect great things out of them, and hopefully they will provide the leadership necessary for us to have a break-out year.” On the defensive side of the ball, Phelps expects good things from senior Zac Fletcher and sophomore Brandon Miller. These two are the favorites to play at the linebacker spots. Junior Preston Shepherd is a solid defensive end, according to Phelps. He has “good speed to run down running backs, and he provides good pass coverage.” SEE FOXES, PAGE 31

MADILL
Wildcats ready for new challenges in Class 4A
By Evan Grice evan.grice@ardmoreite.com
MADILL — When looking for someone to lead a program, it’s often best to find someone who knows and understands the tradition first hand. The Madill Wildcats football team found this individual in Todd Vargas. Vargas is a proud native of Madill, having attended and graduated from Madill High School. Now he will look to take a program he once played for back to prominence, as he enters his first season in charge of the Wildcats. “I feel very blessed to be back in Madill,” Vargas said. “I love this community, and I’ve spent more than 30 years of my life here in this town. There’s been so many people in that time which have impacted my life in a positive way and I’m very blessed to have their support.” “My hope is that I can have
a positive impact not only in this football program, but in this school and community as well,” Vargas added. “Football is just a small part of our vision for these young men. We want them to be everything God has destined them to become as a person of our society. I’m just so excited to be a part of this process.” Vargas will be returning to Madill with an impressive resume which has been built up over the last four seasons at Altus High School. He spent two years as the defensive coordinator, which included a Class 5A state championship for the Bulldogs, as well as two successful years as the head coach. When Vargas was in charge of the Bulldogs, he led Altus to a pair of 10-win seasons with only three losses in district play. Last season, Madill struggled to a 3-7 overall finish, including an 0-6 record in district play. If the Wildcats are going to

Tuttle Tigers. “We’re focusing daily on the process,” Vargas said. “We don’t talk about winning games or even making the playoffs. We’re just trying to focus right now on being the best we can be. There’s nine core values we believe in when it comes to defending the M. We believe winning is a byproduct of our cole values.” Leading the charge this season for the Wildcats on offense will be Asa Robertson at the quarterback position, with Fermin Laffita and John Venable returning at the fullback position. Dakota Venderburg, EJ Holliday and Dylan McCullogh will be key players on the defensive side of the ball for the Wildcats, while Robertson
and Bret McDaniel will try and make an impact at defensive back. “There’s only a handful of returning starters coming back for us this season,” Vargas said. “We’re going to be running a 4-2-5 scheme on defense, and then we’ll be running the flexbone (triple option) offense. We feel this is going to give us the best chance to succeed.” “We will throw the ball, but there is no doubt Madill is going to be a run first team this season,” Vargas added. “This offense began getting installed in the spring, and the kids have come a long way from then until now. We’ve got a bunch of blue collar players that really give us relentless effort everyday.” Madill will open the season on Aug. 31 at home against Sulphur, before going on the road the following week against Lone Grove. The Wildcats will have one more road game against Dickson before starting district play.

change in their offensive game plan, according to Koons. The Blue Devils have always been run-orientated, and Koons expects that to continue. “We will run the ball a lot, but we have a quarterback that can throw the ball well and some receivers that will go get it,” Koons said. Junior Sam VanBuskirk will start at quarterback. He has great size and is a very smart football player. In the running back mix are senior Chandler Roberts, senior Justis Davis, junior Ethan Johnson and sophomore Cash Lyle. Our two wide receivers, senior Scotty Paul and junior Duchaine Paul, have done excellent at those positions. Also at wide out will be junior Drake Stapleton. And senior Cage Calvert is expected to see plenty of action
at tight end.” Koons is additionally pleased with four returning starters along the offensive front. Defensively the go-to guy will be Johnson at middle linebacker. Davis and Calvert will handle most of the line backing duties. Senior David Wright will be a mainstay at defensive tackle, and junior Macs Stewart and senior Caleb Stewart are the likely choices at defensive end. Two linemen mentioned by Koons as key to the Blue Devil success in the trenches will be senior Zac Cargile and senior Ian Cox, both of whom are expected to play on both offense and defense. In addition, senior Parker Phelps, a strong power lifter in the off-season, will add additional strength along both lines. Ringling went 9-2 last season, winning the district title with an undefeated 5-0 record. The Blue Devils were beaten in the second round of the playoffs.

Defensively the Foxes will be looking to keep their opponents contained. Last year Fox gave up 50 points or more in six of their 11 games. “We are seeing a lot of upside with our players right now,” Phelps said. “They are getting physically stronger. We want to get back to playing that kind of football and making our parents and fans proud. We are as strong as we have been in the last four to five years. Fox will then make a trip to state powerhouse Tipton on Sept. 21, before facing off with Grandfield at home the following week. I believe we should be pretty evenly matched with most everyone on our schedule. It always helps when you feel you have a chance to be successful before every game.” The Eagles bring back some key players with playing experience for Ridley. Although some underclassmen will be getting their first look at high school football, a solid group of returning starters are there to help the younger ones get headed the right way. “Senior Trevor Schaaf, last year’s leading rusher, will be back at fullback,” Ridley said. “Trevor’s brother, Logan, will work at quarterback. They are both returning starters. Two other key players, juniors Carson Fulton and Luke Honea, will return as wide receivers.” “We might experience some issues along the offensive line early on due to lack of experience,” Ridley added. “Seniors Chris Grace and Scotty Morse and sophomore Tre Richardson and freshman Caden Henry will all have a key roll up front. reps to get everything working well, and their development will be a key to this team’s success.” Many of Wilson’s core people will be playing on defense as well as offense. Another key to the Eagles’ success will be development of players to offer these two-way players some rest. “All of our skilled offensive people will double up on defense most of the time,” Ridley said. “Chris (Grace) will be our starting nose guard, and Trevor will be one of our linebackers. Carson, Logan and Luke will all be in the defensive backfield. Two additional players, junior Ethan Lowery (defensive end) and sophomore Hunter Wyatt (linebacker), will provide some of the additional defensive support we need.” “Being new, I can’t speak about our strength of schedule,” Ridley added. “But I am pretty confident we will be competitive throughout the season. We are working first of all to making the playoffs. From there we hope to advance past the first round and maybe take this program where it has not been for quite some time.” Wilson’s first game will be home on Aug. 24 against the Paoli Pugs. The Eagles will then have back-to-back road games against Caddo and Thackerville before a home game on Sept. 14.
