rdmore Dragway owners and staff extends our gratitude to all our fans, racers, and sponsors for a wonderful 2017 race season. As the wheels stop turning on our 63rd season of drag racing, the momentum is already started for 2018. Again, Ardmore Dragway is excited to be affiliated with the National Hot Rod Association and the great privileges it brings to our race fans. In the upcoming race season we will once again be hosting our Friday Night Fun Drags. This is an opportunity for the community to bring their family sedan or pickup and race in a safe, legal environment against their friends. Ardmore Dragway will also be participating in the NHRA Youth Program, which offers young race enthusiasts the chance to compete in street legal cars and our Junior Drag Racing League Series. Saturdays, we will once again be running the Summit Bracket Race Series featuring the best sportsman racers in Oklahoma and Texas. The Spring Swap Meet and Children’s Shelter Car Show will return next year along with The Cowpasture Nationals, Friday Night Nitro, Ardmore Dragway Racers Reunion, and many more specialty events. And as you’re shopping, please consider making a donation to the Salvation Army — their Red Kettle campaign has a long history of helping those in need — or another agency, or two, whose mission is to aid those that are homeless, hungry, cold or in need of medical assistance. Make sure to be at the Ardmore Convention Center as the Chamber of Commerce Foundation hosts the 21st annual Festival of Lights Auction on Nov. 14. This annual fundraiser is the primary source of funding that ensures the Festival of Lights Christmas lights drive-thru grows and improves every year. Open to the public, the auction has raised over $120,000 since its inception. The funds are reinvested directly into the expansion and maintenance of the drive-thru display at Regional Park. This year’s theme is “Meet me Under the Mistletoe”, which is sure to showcase Ardmore’s holiday spirit. The evening includes both a live and silent auction, and features items and services donated by local businesses. It all kicks off at 5:30 p.m. with the silent auction, which includes items ranging from top toys and gifts for Christmas to certificates for restaurants, movies, professional services and more. Then, at approximately 7 p.m., the Live portion gives attendees the opportunity to bid for and win unique packages and items to treat themselves or offer as great holiday gifts.

Ardmore’s Festival of Lights begins on Nov. 18.

During the Christmas of 2012, our Christmas card featured two-year-old Shepherd, grinning with a snotty nose, and four-month-old Lydia, sporting her distinctive elf-ears and shockingly-straight hair standing an inch above her head. With two kids in cloth diapers, BJ and I were drowning in laundry and parenthood. We spent the Christmas of 2013 announcing to our families that we were once again (and very unexpectedly) expecting. We chuckled along to the many good-natured jokes that came our way: “No, we don’t need to be told how babies are made.” And once again, I thought fondly of how good Christmas food used to taste before morning sickness. For our Christmas 2014 celebration, we found ourselves once again with two children in diapers, but this time was different. Shepherd was in preschool, and we proudly dressed our little family for the Christmas program. It reminded us that our children would not always be babies, that they were growing up. And this realization made me cherish our baby Violet all the more. Our family of five felt complete. We drove to my parent’s house in

Menard, Texas, for the Christmas of 2015. At this point, two of the three children were potty-trained, and there was a light at the end of the tunnel. While unwrapping gifts, my brother and his wife announced that they were expecting their first child. I cried tears of joy that I would finally be an aunt. And I might have also been enjoying the fact that for once, I was not the one too nauseas to enjoy the Christmas feast. Last year, in what was the most startling shock of my life, I once again spent Christmas pregnant despite our best efforts. This time around, when people jokingly asked us if we knew how babies were made, we retorted, “Clearly, we do not.” While I hosted another Christmas feeling exhausted and nauseated, BJ recovered from a vasectomy. So this year, BJ and I approach our twelfth Christmas together as a family of six. Finn, our little oops baby whose existence we spent last Christmas reeling over, has filled our home with smiles and giggles and gurgles and coos. Shepherd says it is hard to remember when Finn was not a part of our family. Finn has shown us that what felt like a complete family three Christmases ago was actually just an interlude before we got our exclamation mark. Looking at so many Christmases from a single couple’s life is a reminder that though it is the happiest time of the year, the holiday season is not immune from the tensions of life. Some years, life is going as planned, and Christmas is the icing on the cake. At other times, though, Christmas is touched by feelings of emptiness or isolation or overwhelming stress. However, Christmas is the ultimate reminder that God clothed himself in humanity to participate in the complex and messy experience that is life. Christmas is the most human of holidays, and as such it is a time to acknowledge both the joy and sorrow of life and thank God for each moment.

Sweet sensations Bedré Fine Chocolate reflects its namesake with delectable delights By Lone Beasley

Many chocolate-loving Oklahomans probably don’t realize it, but they have a Scandinavian word in their vocabulary the fictional Willie Wonka would have done well to emulate. Bedré, as in Bedré Fine Chocolate, which is located just 25 miles north of Ardmore, gets its name from a Norwegian word meaning “better.” Ardmoreites traveling north on Interstate 35 to Exit 55 at Davis, Oklahoma, will find not just a retail store on the western side of the highway, but also the factory where the treats are produced. Visitors to the location can try free samples and make their selections while watching the treats being produced in the state-of-the-art facility through a glass partition separating the factory from the retail store. In addition to their signature chocolate-covered potato crisps, the plant creates candy bars, cookies, pecans and cara10 Southern Oklahoma Living u Holiday 2017

mel drenched in chocolate, as well as nut clusters under the name “Oklahoma Cow Patties.” Other customer favorites are Bedré Chocolate Coffee and chocolate-covered espresso beans. Its customers are not limited to Oklahoma. Retailers such as Neiman Marcus and Bloomingdales sell Bedré chocolates in stores across the United States. Bedré creates chocolate guitars for guests at Hard Rock Hotels. The Chickasaw Nation purchased the company in 2000 and in 2003 moved it to a new 26,000 square-foot factory in Pauls Valley where it remained until moving in 2013 to its current location, a state-of-the-art 34,600 square-foot chocolate factory in Davis. Later in 2013, Bedré Café was opened in Sulphur, Oklahoma, as one of three new attractions, which also included the Chickasaw Visitor Center and the ARTesian Gallery and Studios. Back in time: Decades of change for Ardmore

A

s a third generation, lifelong Ardmoreite, I frequently find myself reminiscing about what Ardmore was like in my early years. I recently took a trip down memory lane remembering what Ardmore was like in the 1980s when I was first elected to the city commission and thinking of the many changes and improvements since that time that have improved our quality of life and made Ardmore a great place to live. Some of the changes were significant and some subtle, but all contributed to the betterment of our city. One of the most significant is commercial and industrial development. In 1980, North Rockford Road ended at 4th Avenue, and 12th avenue was mostly pastureland west of Mountain View Mall. About the year 2000, North Rockford was constructed from 4th to 12th and shortly thereafter

was completed to Veterans Boulevard. Holiday Drive was also constructed. Now, that whole northwest area is MARTIN DYER a large commercial area containing a shopping center, restaurants, auto dealerships, a movie theater, hotels and other businesses and is still growing and expanding. Another shopping center is planned for 12th Avenue, which will contain some national chains. In the early 80s, we passed a one cent sales tax which is significant. One half cent was dedicated to street construction and improvements and currently furnishes $2.8 million annually. The benefits are easily seen, the latest being Stanley Street. The other one half cent is used strictly

for capital purchases and improvements. Other significant changes are the acquisitions of Lakeview Golf Course and installation of an irrigation system to keep it green; renovations and upgrading Hardy Murphy Coliseum; the remaking of Central Park into a beautiful and family-friendly venue; improvements to our water and wastewater systems; the creation of Regional Park

into a place of beauty which contains softball fields, soccer fields, horseshoe pits, a dog park, skateboard park, 18hole disc golf course and more than six miles of foot trails. We now have 22 hotels, including major chains and a convention center that is second to none. Our industrial airpark continues to grow with good access to an SEE DYER PAGE 27

• Fat grafting — Fat is harvested from the stomach using a special liposuction procedure (yes, you also get a little liposuction included). The body’s healing materials are added to the fat to enhance growth (platelet rich plasma, stem cells extracted from fat). The super-charged fat cells are injected to plump up deficient areas of the face and body. These procedures can be performed in ambulatory settings. In my practice, they are performed in our private AAAHC accredited Surgical Facility using special local anesthesia techniques and sedatives. Platelet rich plasma is used to enhance healing, reduce recovery time and improve the final result. • Finances — Most cosmetic surgeons accept some financing through third party payers (Visa, MasterCard, American express, Carecredit, United Medical Credit). A convenience fee may apply. • Plan for recovery — Cosmetic surgical procedures will have some recovery period

after the procedure. Plan for at least two weeks of reduced activity (a little longer for some of the larger body procedures). Many patients have much less down time. The good news is that this is the best time for recovery since our bodies are covered due to the cold weather. This is also a great time to have skin resurfacing since sun exposure is at a minimum. • Important points — Set aside preconceived notions and stories of complications from the past. Find out the facts yourself. Get your questions answered. Consult with a physician who is trained and experienced in cosmetic surgery. Ask to see photos of other patients, and if possible, speak with other patients who have been treated. Speak with the doctor personally. Decide if you want to have a relationship with this person. If most of your visit is with an assistant, the post operative care may occur in the same manner. Check with your state med-

ical society about the physician’s qualifications and certifications. Oklahoma State Board of Medical Licensure 405-8486841 www.osbmls.state.ok.us/ If your physician is board certified, make sure they are board certified in an appropriate specialty. Verify that the facility is approved by a national certifying organization. Various machines claim to change body contour and skin using heat, cold, microwave and lasers. These procedures are unproven (but well advertised) ,expensive and in some

cases are potentially harmful. Dr Harry Galoob MD has been in the practice of Cosmetic and Reconstructive Surgery for more than 30 years. He is board certified by the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery. Most procedures are performed in a private AAAHC certified facility. He has hospital privileges at Mercy Hospital in Ardmore and participates in several insurance programs. All procedures include the use of platelet rich plasma. Adipose derived stem cell therapy is available.

Goddard Center

he Goddard Center has an array of family friendly activities, performances and exhibits this Fall and continuing through our 2017-18 season! We are committed to encouraging and supporting participation, education, and enjoyment of visual and performing arts by all in south-central Oklahoma, and to support the advancement of excellence of cultural activities in our area. As a membership-based institution we recommend you and your family become members for advance notice of events as well as to reap the benefits of discounted art classes, free tickets to our largest performance season to date, free facility rentals, priority seating to all performances, and more. The Nesbitt Gallery’s popular Seven-State Biennial, from the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma in Chickasha, will be exhibited at The Goddard Center from Oct. 31 to Nov. 22, 2017. This is a juried regional art exhibit that brings artists from all over Oklahoma, as well as the six contiguous states that bor18 Southern Oklahoma Living u Holiday 2017

der it: New Mexico, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas and Texas. This year’s juror is artist William Cannings. Mr. Cannings is CORY BLANKENSHIP a native of Nantwich, England, who received his BFA from Virginia Commonwealth University, his MFA from Syracuse University and makes inflated metal sculptures and installations. “Mr. Popper’s Penguins” is a delightful, 60-minute action-packed musical adaptation of Richard and Florence Atwater’s award-winning children’s book, with original songs and adorable penguin puppets. This is the perfect family treat for ages 4 to 104. The Goddard Center and Casa Mañana will present this show at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 30. There will be two daytime outreach performances for area students. In conjunction with this performance Ardmore High School drama coach, Bri-

an Gunter, will teach a free acting workshop for all ages at 6 p.m. on Nov. 29. “Mr. Popper’s Penguins” is sponsored in part by the Mid-America Arts Alliance. The Calamitous Cowgirls Exhibit features the illustrations of Donna Howell-Sickles from Nov. 29 to Jan. 5. Annie Osburn for Southwest Art Magazine once said about Donna’s work, “There is a joyous spontaneity to the drawings of Howell-Sickles that challenges the stasis of the color fields, giving vitality to the gestures whose Cheshire grins fade in and out like shades in a dream fantasy. Unconventional compositions, cropped animals, smeared and erased lines, and a collage-like appearance give the images a sense of process. Indeed, they seem as if they are being worked on before your very eyes.” Gracing the Goddard stage for our seasonal Christmas Concert will be the Texas Boys Choir at 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 15. Steeped in the tradition of European church choirs, members of TBC begin their intensive vocal training at a young age, and the choir continues its reputation as one of the premier boy choirs in the world.

For more than 70 years, Texas Boys Choir has been instrumental in instilling a love of artistic expression and a desire to succeed in its young members. There will be a daytime outreach performance for area students. Prior to the performance there will be a gallery reception for Donna Howell-Sickles at 6 p.m. The Texas Boys Choir is sponsored in part by the Mid-America Arts Alliance. In addition to receiving free tickets to season events, Goddard Center Members get discounts on tickets to Metropolitan Operas and Bolshoi Ballets presented via satellite in high definition. Thomas Adès’ contemporary opera “The Exterminating Angel” will be shown on at 11:55 a.m. on Nov. 18. The following Met Opera will be composer Engelbert Humperdinck’s classic “Hansel & Gretel” at 9:30 a.m. on Dec. 12. It will include hundreds of outreach tickets for area

school children. And our first-ever presentation by the Bolshoi Ballet will be Tchaikovsky’s “The Nutcracker” at 6 p.m. on Dec. 19. Aside from the outreach performances, a light meal, included in the cost of admission, will be served prior to all Metropolitan and Bolshoi performances. The Goddard Center (580226-0909) is located at 401 1st Ave SW, Ardmore, Oklahoma. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturdays. The center is closed on Sundays, Mondays and major holidays. A complete list of activities, dates and times can be found on our website at www.goddardcenter.org. The Goddard Center is sponsored in part by the Oklahoma Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts. The Goddard Center is an Adventure Road Partner.

‘IT WAS A BASEBALL TOWN’

Cardinal Field on White Street used to play host to minor league baseball games throughout the 50s and 60s. Ardmore’s Cardinal Field steeped in baseball tradition and history By Austin Jackson austin.jackson@ardmoreite.com

Hidden past a tunnel of trees in a park illuminated by towering oil derricks sits a baseball field called Cardinal Field. The field lies vacant now, except for recreational play. And Ardmore residents driving by might just see an old baseball track when they pass the field. But in the eyes of Ardmore resident and Nance Home Furnishing owner Keith Nance, 70, the park is sacred, hallowed ground even, where legends of baseball’s past used to visit and compete back in the 1950s. 20 Southern Oklahoma Living u Holiday 2017

When Nance was growing up, he would help out a relative of his grandfather who worked as a groundskeeper for the Ardmore Indians and the Ardmore Cardinals. “As a youngster, I spent a lot of time out with him watering, mowing and doing that sort of thing,” Nance said. “When I came along, the park had a beautiful wood fence around it with all the company advertising on it and a big time scoreboard and a person staying up in it to score runs.” The current state of the park is different now as many things have changed in Ardmore during the past 50 years.

Before 1961, Ardmore was a baseball town. From the Ardmore Cardinals,

Nance said the bleachers at Cardinal Park would be filled with around 2,000 people on summer nights. “Baseball was big here,” Nance said. “We had a lot of fun, minor league baseball was strong in Ardmore. Those Rosebuds came in June of ‘61 and left. And that was the last time we had a true minor league baseball team here.” Ardmore Mayor Martin Dyer said baseball was the main attraction on summer nights when he was growing up. “Back in those days television wasn’t what it was, we didn’t sit around and watch TV,” Dyer said. “They’d draw real good

But Nance said several baseball legends passed through the gates to play ball at Cardinal Park . Mostly, it was young baseball players chasing major league dreams, but years after the Cardinals folded, Nance said even legends of the past like Satchel Paige took the field at Cardinal Park. “Satchel pitched about two or three innings,” Nance said. “My granddad went out and he was sitting in his 1959 red Cadillac convertible with Goose Tatum in the car with him. We stood out and talked with them.” In 1961, the Texas League resurrected baseball in Ardmore with the Ardmore Rosebuds. Unfortunately, the Rosebuds relocated to Albuquerque, New Mexico. Very often teams we played would look at that Rosebud and they’d holler, ‘What are you guys, the Ardmore Pansies?’” Despite the ridicule, Nance kept the jersey in his drawer after high school. Nance said growing up with professional teams in Ardmore and playing on the same field as the Cardinals gave he and his teammates major league aspirations. “The kids in that generation, like myself, we all thought we would be major league baseball players, it was just a matter of waiting until we were old enough” Nance said. “Well, by about junior high we knew that we didn’t have the same type of talent we saw come through here.” Nance said when the Rosebuds folded, the sentiment around Ardmore was that it was just a matter of time before the team came back. “We figured it was just a hiccup,” Nance said. “That next year we’ll have a team and everything will get up and going again. we have been blessed with many hard working, dedicated and loyal citizens who have contributed to much of the time, efforts and funding to make Ardmore what it is today. There are great changes yet to come. Construction has started on the new Fire Station No. 3. Construction will start soon on a new Family Entertainment Center in Re-

gional Park, offering, in addition to a venue for fun events, a miniature golf course, gocart track, zip line, tree house and other features. Our arts groups are working to create an Arts District connecting the Goddard Center and Vaughn-Williams theater with other arts venues. The Ardmore Beautification Council is continuing to make Ardmore a place of beauty.

Construction will start in January, 2018, on our new streetscape project, which together with the upcoming Depot Park and the iconic Mercy Train will convert East Main Street and the Depot District into a destination for visitors and residents alike — a beautiful area containing local shops, restaurants and a park atmosphere, bringing new life to Downtown Ardmore.
