pring was definitely wetter and a tad bit cooler this year. The grass, trees and flowers seemed to flourish as they soaked in the welcomed excess moisture. Speaking of soaking it up, summer is here and it’s time to soak up some rays and have a little fun. The kids are out of school and the days are longer, allowing families to get in a few extra hours of daylight. Just like spring time, there are a lot of things to do during the summer months in Wilson America, as well as in surrounding towns, to keep one entertained. As soon as the school year wraps up, summer programs begin. Two popular hangouts for kids and teens are the Boys and Girls Club and the Teen

There are football, basketball and baseball team and skills camps available for athletes. Local libraries host the Summer Reading Program, which include activities such as building pool noodle rocket launchers, juggling shows and more. Wilson’s city park has a variety of playground equipment and picnic areas, and everybody’s favorite — crawdad fishing. If you’re looking for nonphysical activities, there are events and opportunities happening around town nightly. You can drive to the Little League fields and watch a t-ball or baseball game. HS baseball, basketball, weightlifting and football are happening throughout the summer. Drop by the gym and fields when you see a gathering of cars and see how the students and the program are progressing. Big things are happening at Wilson Public Schools. Students are encouraged to be available for summer events and parents and patrons are encouraged to come watch and show support. There’s also nothing wrong with a nice, calm relaxing evening around the house either. 6 Southern Oklahoma Living u Summer 2019

The public is invited at no charge. For more information, call (580) 924-6502. Fort Washita was built, in 1842, as the southwestern-most post of the United States as a means of protecting the Chickasaw and Choctaw tribes from Plains Indians. It operated through 1865 and still stands as a historic site and museum where visitors can learn what life was like before and during the Civil War. After the war, the fort was granted to the Chickasaw Nation. The Oklahoma Historical Society acquired Fort Washita in 1962 and restored it. The site is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is designed as a National Historic Landmark. Fort Washita gives visitors the opportunity to explore the restored structures, see Civil War reenactments and experience a yearly Fur Trade Era Rendezvous — which takes visitors on a journey of the past through educational stations, storytellers and more. Group tours are available but must be scheduled in advance. Fort Washita is located at 3348 State Road 199 in Durant, Okla. It is open Wednesday-Saturday 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. and Sunday 1-4:30 p.m.

he Chickasaw White House will be the site of the Chickasaw Nation’s Third Annual Independence Day Celebration, Saturday, June 29. The public is invited to attend at no charge. For the energetic, there will be many opportunities to display athletic prowess. On tap are a toe sack race, a horseshoe toss, kite flying, volleyball, badminton and a cake walk. Participants and lawn chair potatoes alike will enjoy consuming hot dogs, potato chips, watermelon, cake, cookies, lemonade and homemade ice cream. Food and games are scheduled from 4-8 p.m. with a movie on the lawn starting at 8:30 p.m. In its day, the home of former Chickasaw Nation Governor Douglas Henry Johnston was considered a mansion on the frontier. Though he is no longer with us, Gov. Johnston’s home in Emmet, Okla., still stands as a stately monument to its famous owner. Some may want to just absorb the history the house represents. Gov. Johnston built it in 1898. Later, former Oklahoma Gov. William E. “Alfalfa Bill” Murray, was married to Alice Hearell, Gov. Johnston’s niece. Their son, Johnston Murray, who was born in the house, became Oklahoma’s 14th governor in 1951. Prominent politicians and members of the Dawes Commission also met at the house. Mrs. Bettie Johnston planted cannas, jonquils, roses, day lilies, crepe myrtle trees and trumpet vines. Known for her medicinal skills, she found an abundance of herbs and plants on the property for use in home remedies and food preparations. The 36-year tenure of Chickasaw Gov. Douglas H. Johnston represents an important period in Chickasaw national life. Much of the history is echoed within the rooms of the Chickasaw White House. For more information about the July Fourth Celebration, call (580) 235-7343. The Chickasaw White House is located at 6379 E. Mansion Dr., Milburn, Okla.

Helping veterans tell their stories By Matthew Berger

O

klahoma, when called upon, has always stepped up to fight for the United States of America. From its journey to statehood in 1907 to the present day, it’s easy to argue that no American war would have been won without the strength and courage that patriots from Oklahoma brought to the front. On display in the Greater Southwestern Historical museum in Ardmore, citizens and history buffs from all around can see the great history of Oklahomans called into action. The museum military wing first opened in 1988 and is 10 Southern Oklahoma Living u Summer 2019

run by volunteers, all of whom served in the military. Veterans donate their time to the museum to teach and speak on their experiences in war. Those experiences range from a United States Marine who served at Iwo Jima during World War II to the Iraq War. All artifacts are donated to the museum, with some dating back to the Civil War. The museum is host to many wartime guns, as well as uniforms and military pins. For the avid history reader, the museum also carries books. Wesley Hull, a two-star Rear Admiral who spent 32 years in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration branch of the military, is now

the director of the museum. Hull is happy to see the veterans have a place to talk about their experiences. “With a lot of military around Ardmore, the decision was made to create a military memorial museum,” Hull said. “We have a volunteer from the military any time the Greater Southwest museum is open.” The museum has at least one volunteer working during the day Tuesday through Saturday, with a total of 20 volunteers signed up. The state of Oklahoma cur-

rently has over 300,000 veterans in the state. One of the volunteers at the museum is Jim Matlack, an Army veteran who served over 40 years with the military. Matlack served in the Oklahoma Guard during Vietnam and was later deployed during operation Enduring Freedom in Bosnia and Herzegovina at 56 years old. Matlack has been volunteering at the museum for the past six years and uses his retirement to help those in search of knowledge.

“I am here for the patriotism more than anything, you get this military in you and you can’t get it out, you got to have some association in you until the day you die,” Matlack said. “It is just a wonderful experience volunteering, It gives me chills to see peoples faces light up when they hear something that they didn’t know.” Hull, along with other military volunteers, also donate their time at the museum to give recognition to the soldiers from the area. Currently there are 38 members in the Hall of Honor, with the first induc-

tion in 1993. The museum is working on inducting two more members from World War II by the end of the summer. The Hall of Honor members receive a plaque with their name and photo on it, as well as recognition for their acts during war and peacetime. The museum is also working on recognizing Willie Stevenson, who was the first African American from Carter County to die in battle during World War I. The museum will create a brass plaque as tribute to Stevenson, as well as a special tribute.

One volunteer, Dale Newell, takes time out of his schedule to help out at the museum. Newell, who is originally from Indiana, moved to Ardmore to spend time with his son. Newell is a veteran who spent 37 years serving in the United States Army. For Newell, being a volunteer is a privilege and giving his hands-on knowledge from his experiences in the war helps to teach those who want to learn. “I spent 37 years in the Army and it means a lot to have a mu-

seum like this, for a small community this is an outstanding museum,” Newell said. “I help the visitors all I can, I know most of the history of the wars involved here.” For anyone willing to learn about the sacrifices made by the men and women of not only the United States but Oklahoma, no place in the area is a better place to learn than the Greater Southwest Historical Museum in Ardmore. Build your own garden tower Repurpose old tires and grow your own fruits and vegetables in this tiered container garden designed by Steve Upson, a soils and crops consultant Noble Research Institute

MATERIALS n 4 identical, used, full-sized automobile or light truck tires (preferably at least 30 inches in diameter) n 3 joints of top chain-link rail fence tubing (1.375-inch by 10- feet) n 1 sheet of plastic lattice (0.2-inch-by-4-feet-by-8-feet) n 1 box (40 count) self-tapping sheet metal screws (no. 10 by 1-inch) n 1 box tek screws (no. 12 by 3/4-inch) n 6 machine bolts including nuts (5/16-by-6-inch) n 18 pipe hangers (1-inch) n Weed barrier fabric (4-feet-by-50-feet roll) n Duct (Gorilla) tape n 3 2-cubic-feet bags of potting soil DESIGNING TOWER BASE Step 1: Choose one tire to be the tower base.

Step 2: Using a tape measure and a white marker, make six evenly spaced lines on the tire as shown. Step 3: Cut the top chain-link rail fence tubing into six, 60inch long posts. Remove burs on the tubing. Step 4: Drill a 5/16-inch bolt hole, 10 inches from one end, in each post. Step 5: Install posts using 1-inch pipe straps and 1-inch self-tapping sheet metal screws. Use two straps per post. Before attaching post to tire, place a short piece of two-by-four lumber under the post. Step 6: Align the center of each post over the mark, and use a level to ensure the posts are plumb before attaching. Step 7: Insert bolts into holes at the end of each post, and secure using nuts. Make sure bolts on opposite posts are aligned with each other, twisting posts as needed to align.

Step 8: When posts are aligned, attach hangers to posts using 3/4-inch tek screws. PREPARING PLANTER MODULES Step 1: Create three planter modules by removing the side walls from the remaining tires. On one side of each tire, use a utility knife to remove the side wall as close to the tread as possible without exposing the steel belting. A jigsaw equipped with a fine- toothed hacksaw blade or rubber cutting blade can also be used for side wall removal. Save one of the side walls. Step 2: To prepare the opposite side of each tire (planter module), mark the side wall along the midpoint (crown). Cut along the line to remove the side wall. This section of side wall may be discarded. Step 3: Construct a bottom

for each module using a piece of plastic lattice or metal livestock panel. Using the saved sidewall as a template, mark off three bottom sections using a permanent marker. Use a jigsaw to cut the lattice or a pair of bolt cutters to cut the metal panel. Step 4: Prepare a liner for each bottom using a piece of weed barrier fabric. Use binder clips to attach fabric to the outer edge of the bottom sections or gather the fabric on the back side and secure using Gorilla tape. INSTALLING PLANTER MODULES Step 1: Insert one of the growing modules into the tower frame and position on top of the base. Step 2: Next, insert the fabric bottom.

Steve Upson serves as a senior soils and crops consultant with horticulture as his expertise area. Upson specializes in raised bed and container gardening, vegetable plasticulture, and hoop house vegetable and fruit production. He also provides consulting services to organizations interested in starting community and school gardens. Prior to joining the Noble Research Institute in 1988, Upson managed a commercial vegetable farm and served as an extension horticulture agent for Oklahoma State University.

Step 3: Attach the planter module to the frame using pipe hang- ers and sheet metal screws. One pipe hanger per post is sufficient. To avoid injury, grind off protruding screw tips. Step 4: Move tower to a permanent, level location before adding growing medium. PLANTER MODULE CONFIGURATIONS When filled with growing medium, each module provides about 8 inches of growing depth. This is sufficient for root crops, leafy greens, strawberry and bedding plants. For large, deep-rooted crops such as tomato, pepper and trellised crops, the modules can be stacked to create additional rooting space. In a stacked configuration, only the bottom module needs a bottom section.* A two-level setup is ideal for growing a combination of high-light-requiring crops and crops that can tolerate some shade. In this configuration, strawberry will thrive on the upper level while leafy greens

and root crops may be grown successfully on both levels. The support bolts must be installed (along with a bottom section) to use the upper planter module. Water dripping onto the lower planter module can be expected when using the two-level configuration. This should not pose a problem when growing greens and root crops but may increase disease pressure on warm-season fruiting crops growing on the lower level. If this becomes an issue, remove the growing medium from the upper module and replace with containers. Be sure to install a plastic liner before positioning containers. *Use soil mixes high in organic material, such as peat moss and composted pine bark, to reduce weight on the tower frame. eep within Lake Murray State Park, yet less than a 20 minute drive from downtown Ardmore, lies one of Southern Oklahoma’s best known and best hidden attractions. What started as a retreat for then-governor William “Alfalfa Bill” Murray, the inauspiciously named Tucker Tower has seen its share of renovations since Work Progress Administration workers first broke ground on the project more than 80 years ago. Though initially the property was intended to house the firebrand governor — whose tenure in office included a short, successful war against the state of Texas and a habit of imposing martial law — Murray would never live in the home. would. “In the 1930s some pretty prominent people in Ardmore, including former State Senator Fred Tucker had an idea to use the New Deal’s plan, the WPA, to build a state park in the area,” Bonnie Farris, Park Naturalist said. “They took the proposed plan to Murray and he was not so keen to the idea.” Farris said Murray didn’t want to spend $90,000 to purchase the land now occupied by the lake, but later changed his mind. “They said they were going to name it (the park) after him, so he decided it was a pretty good idea,” Farris said. “He also decided he wanted a house, a governor’s retreat. He didn’t want any ordinary house. He saw a picture of a castle on the Rhine in Germany and said ‘build me that.” Farris said work halted two years after it began, leaving the

tower empty for nearly 20 years with no ceiling, windows or doors. “They ceased work, but most people don’t really know why,” Farris said. “Most people think it had to do with budget restraints. It was taking a long time and costing a lot of money, so they ceased work.” In 1950 the state park system took over the property, renovating it into a geological museum, before converting the property into a nature center in the 1980s. The initial museum included a 600-pound meteorite that was recovered from somewhere nearby. About half of the meteorite can still be seen in the nature center at the base of the 16 Southern Oklahoma Living u Summer 2019

tower, along with a number of other geological and natural artifacts recovered from the area and throughout Oklahoma along with other non-native exhibits. The collection includes a stuffed grizzly bear and fossilized mastodon skull along with mammoth bones discovered in Love County. Built on the top of a hill overlooking the valley that was to become the lake, Farris said Tucker Tower would not be completed until the early 1990s. The tower, now complete, is home to a museum dedicated to the WPA program with a number of artifacts and images from the era. Tucker Tower sits atop a 60-

foot cliff overlooking the lake, and from the top of the tower — about 130 feet above the water — visitors are given a breathtaking bird’s eye view of the lake and thousands of trees, some of which were likely planted by the same program that broke ground on the tower. “I remember coming here as a kid, I was deathly afraid of heights. I remember siting on the second floor balcony looking up and waving at my mom and sister at the top.” Farris said. “It’s quite the view up there.” Farris said the tower draws about 32,000-35,000 visitors a year. During busy times, lines begin to form for those wanting to conquer Tucker Tower —

climbing to the top. Though during down times, the place is ideal for a leisurely stroll through a significant period in Oklahoma history. “When the lake gets packed with people, it gets pretty busy up here,” Farris said. A short hike from the Nature Center at the base of Tucker Tower reveals millions of years of geological history with large boulders and rock faces protruding from the mountain side. Much like the drive to Tucker Tower, which is shrouded by foliage, the journey to the top is obscured by countless obstacles and distractions leaving one to emerge to miles of unobstructed views.

ART Continued from Page 18

instincts. As someone who regularly paints with 25 six-yearold children at once, I have come to rely heavily on tempera cakes. They give more bang for your buck than watercolor paints, but they function in a similar way. They are dry paints that are activated with a wet paintbrush. The colors are rich, and kids can use them with little supervision. Tempera cakes can be purchased on Amazon or Blick Art Materials. 3. Avoid certain craft kits. You know the ones: children assemble a few pre-cut foam pieces with adhesive backings to create small decorative pieces you will likely throw away in a week. If your goal is to help your child with fine-motor skills, these may be a fantas-

tic option for you. But if you are wanting to hone creativity, these will not do the job. 4. Read about art. We are fortunate to live in a golden age of children’s books. My own kids’ rooms have more space devoted to books than toys or sleeping or clothes. Two of our favorite books about art are “The Dot” and “Ish,” both by Peter Reynolds. Each book encourages children to let go of the perfectionism that inhibits creativity and, instead, to embrace the process of creating art unencumbered. 5. Buy a small battery-powered pencil sharpener. Every once in a while, kids, like adults, want a break from the norm (and by norm, I mean crayons). Crayons are abundantly available to kids under ten, but sometimes it is really fun to use colored pencils instead. Kids love colored pencils,

but they hate dull colored pencils. Allowing access to a good pencil sharpener will decrease frustration with this wonderful art supply while keeping your child occupied longer when they are coloring. 6. Be specific with your compliments. If you tell your child every scribbled piece of artwork they create this summer is a masterpiece, you will unintentionally convey the message that they are creative geniuses just by their nature regardless of effort, skill or craftsmanship. This will shape a sense of entitlement that most parents agree should be avoided. Remedying this is simple. Instead of saying, “That drawing is amazing,” tell your child specifically what they did well. For example, complement their choice of bright colors, their effort at being neat, how realistically they drew the bunny in the

corner or how creative their unicorn-dragon turned out to be. This will help your child identify what is valuable so that they can better hone their skills through practice. Pablo Picasso once said, “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.” As parents, helping children hang on to the artist within is one of the greatest gifts we can give our children. As you can see from the above list, keeping it simple is best when it comes to children’s art. Simple supplies like blank paper, a little paint, some nicely sharpened pencils or good old-fashioned crayons allow for more creativity than many expensive, elaborate art kits. With just a few simple supplies, art can become part of a family’s rhythm, enriching children’s lives while helping fill time on long, hot summer days.

Dive into summer Southern Oklahoma’s most infamous swimming hole offers family fun By Tiffany Ditto Contributing Writer

A

s the summer gets hotter one thing’s for sure, Southern Oklahomans will be looking for a place to make a splash, and there’s not a place more iconic in Oklahoma than Turner Falls. Tucked away in the Arbuckle Mountains, outside of Davis proper, sits Turner Falls — the largest waterfall in Oklahoma. The falls cascade a towering 77 feet down the mountainside into a swimming hole that attracts thousands of visitors every summer. “The biggest draw to the park, without a doubt, is the water,” said Billy Standifer, Turner Falls Park manager. “The stream is so clear and flows through the park. It’s the main thing people come for.” According to the park’s website, the 370-acre park offers 26 Southern Oklahoma Living u Summer 2019

a plethora of outdoor activities for those who are looking for some adventure. Sporting hiking trails, primitive campgrounds, waterfalls, cabins, fishing areas (in the winter only), wildlife, caves, castles and even a zip-line descending from high up in the Arbuckle Mountains overlooking the falls. The 777 Zip-line, aptly named for the 777 feet it stretches overlooking the park, gives those who are brave enough to challenge their fear of heights a chance to soar over the park and take in everything it has to offer. Unlike a traditional zip-line, riders are in a seated position as they travel across the line in a ski lift-like chair. Riders will get a view of the falls, the Arbuckle Mountains, and Colling’s Castle. “What sets us apart is that nearly anyone can do it, as long as you’re 42 inches tall,”

Turner Falls is one of Oklahoma’s tallest waterfalls, dropping 77 feet into a natural swimming pool. JULIE THOMAS/THE ARDMOREITE

Gary Fielding previously told Southern Oklahoma Living Magazine. “We have handicap accessibility and in a traditional zip-line those with mobility issues wouldn’t be able to participate. We say everyone should come and have fun until they

say it backwards.” Those who prefer to get a nice view of the park, while keeping their feet firmly planted on the ground, should hike up to Collings’ Castle. Built in the 1930’s by Ellsworth Collings as a private residence. It is complete

n Bring a US Coast Guard approved life jacket for anyone under 12-years-old (they’re required to wear it when swimming)

n Bring a pair of water shoes because the rocks on the streambed get slick

n Remember to buy your tickets in advance online

n Don’t forget your hiking shoes if you plan to hit the trails with bunkhouses, English-style architecture and a fireplace featuring native rose rocks. The castle is no longer fit for living, but visitors can take a look around inside and imagine what once was. “You can actually climb onto the roof and look out over the park,” Standifer said. “The buildings are pretty interesting and people really enjoy them.” Turner Falls Park is open year round, but the busiest season for the park is without a doubt between May 1 and October 1, Standifer said. The concession stand at the park is open ev-

n Make arrangements for your overnight stay early if you want to book a cabin or plan on camping ery day during the summer, so visitors shouldn’t worry if they forgot the ice chest at home. Admission into the park is $14 for adults, $7 for children (6- 12 years old), children under 5 are free, and seniors (55 years old and up) and active duty military are $7. Time to consider your summer body Harry Galoob

Dr Harry Galoob MD has been in the practice of Cosmetic and Reconstructive Surgery for more than 30 years. He is board certified by the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery. Most procedures are performed in a private AAAHC certified facility. He also has hospital privileges at Mercy Hospital in Ardmore. All procedures include the use of platelet rich plasma. Adipose derived stem cell therapy is available.

I

t’s time to begin thinking about how you’re going to look in that bathing suit and what to do about the extra pounds that accumulated when you were stuck inside during cold weather. This is a good time to strengthen your body, lose a few pounds and get in shape to get ready for summer fun. Modern medicine allows changes in appearance that are safe and predictable. Both men and women can benefit from body contouring and skin rejuvenation. These procedures are often performed in office or outpatient facilities with rapid recovery. You should verify that the facility has certification by a national certifying organization such as AAAHC. Mild forms of anesthesia, the use of platelet rich plasma and new technology make these procedures safe and predictable.

COMMON COSMETIC PROCEDURES TO HELP YOU GET READY FOR SUMMER (Recovery times listed are common for my practice)

n Breast enlargement and lifting — 3- 5 days to return to work, 2-3 weeks to full activity. Platelet rich plasma is commonly used to improve final result and enhance recovery. n New Age Tummy tuck — 2-2.5 weeks to return to work 28 Southern Oklahoma Living u Summer 2019

with light activity, 3-4 weeks to return to full activity. Platelet rich plasma enhances recovery, reduces swelling and improves the results. An aesthetic result includes hidden scars and a natural appearance (be sure and confirm the location of incisions and belly button appearance anticipated by your practitioner) . n Face, Neck and eyelid tightening — Platelet rich plasma, minimal hidden incisions and light no-awareness sedation make these procedures extremely predictable with rapid recovery. You will likely need at least two weeks to assure all areas are safe for the sun. n Facial skin rejuvenation with chemical peels, laser and Platelet rich plasma — return to normal appearance within 3-4 days, may require several procedures for maximum benefit. Sun exposure is not contraindicated following treatment unless more aggressive lasers are used. The Plasma peel can dramatically improve skin appearance. This combination of Medical skin peel and the use of Platelet rich plasma is performed in office with rapid recovery. At the same time, deep wrinkles, can be improved (subcision wrinkle release) with a simple treatment and no fillers required. Skin needling is a new variation of an old procedure that stimulates the skin to produce new collagen. Platelet rich plasma can enhance the results. You should verify that your needling practitioner works under the supervision of a licensed medical provider. n Facial frown and wrinkle improvement with chemical muscle relaxants and fillers. Radiesse™, Belotero™, Juvederm™, Restylane™ and other fillers are temporary and can last from 2-6 months depending on the type and composition of the filler. Fat grafting with the patient’s own fat is a more permanent type of filler and often dramatically improves skin texture and appearance. Most of these procedures are performed in office settings with immediate recovery. n Chemical muscle relaxers — Several muscle relaxers are

now available: Botox Cosmetic™, Dysport™ and Xeomin™ are all FDA Approved Muscle relaxers (All are a kind of Botox product). The new Xeomin™ brand of chemical muscle relaxant with no protein gives long lasting, more predictable results. These products are most useful for forehead frowns, scowls and dynamic wrinkles near the eyes. Smoothing effects begin within a few days with rapid recovery. n Hair laser reduction — There are several types of hair lasers available for hair reduction. The IPL and Neodymium Yag laser are commonly used. The most effective laser available is the Alexandrite laser used in our practice. Heavy tanning and darker skin types are contraindications to laser hair reduction treatment. The Alexandrite Laser is more forgiving of darker skin types and post treatment sun exposure. Multiple treatments are common. n Sun protection — As spring arrives, you should protect exposed skin. A broad brimmed hat or cap is a sim-

ple protection for both adults and children. Transition lenses and sunglasses can protect your eyes from harmful sunlight and are thought to protect against cataracts and eye damage. Reasonably priced sunscreens are available at most pharmacies and retail outlets. I recommend a clear, waterproof product with an SPF of at least 30 or more. Frequent application during sun exposure is essential for adequate protection. No matter what you choose for the summer, be careful and conscious of your surroundings for yourself and your children. Remember, a trip to the ER is no fun. Before any treatment, confirm that the provider has a good local reputation. If the treatment will be performed in a Spa, you should confirm there is licensed medical provider responsible for treatments. Board certification, physician information, history of corrective actions and practice specialty can be verified by contacting the Oklahoma Board of Medical licensure.

Collecting rainwater has many benefits Noble Research Institute

A

rain water collection system is a great way to cut the cost of your water bill and use your land’s resources more efficiently. Whether you want to water your backyard garden or have easy access to water for your livestock, setting up a rain barrel is a DIY project you can accomplish with only a few tools and a little cost in materials. MATERIALS n Rain barrel ($120) (Foodgrade plastic barrels can be purchased for much less.) n Gutter material (Cost will depend on size of roof.) n Y gutter diverter ($30) n 3/4-inch male brass hose bibb ($9) n 3/4-inch female PVC adapter ($2) n Gutter screws ($1.50) n Gutter outlet flange ($1.50) n Landscape garden fabric (Price varies due to size; a window screen can also be used.) TOOLS n Drill n Spade bit n Oscillating saw or hacksaw n Roll of plumber’s tape n Tube of silicone 30 Southern Oklahoma Living u Summer 2019

n Utility knife

DIRECTIONS Step 1: Install gutters alongside the roof of a building. The gutters should have a downspout installed directly above where the rain barrel will be placed. Be sure to properly pitch the gutters so that rain water flows to the barrel. Step 2: Install downspout and Y gutter diverter. The diverter directs the flow of rain water away from the barrel when it is full. Step 3: Line up the barrel and the gutter downspout. The barrel should be placed on flagstones or gravel to deter rotting of the bottom of the barrel. Place the gutter outlet flange upside down and draw around the flange onto the barrel. Cut the area out and use gutter screws to secure the flange to the barrel. Step 4: To keep mosquitoes and debris from collecting inside the barrel place landscape garden fabric or window screen over the flange and cut the excess with a utility knife. Use the extra gutter downspout material to connect the gutter to the flange. The downspout will need to be removed occasionally to clean off the debris from the landscape fabric.

Josh Meo serves as a graphic designer in the Noble Research Institute’s communications department. While living in Indiana, Meo developed a system that diverted rainwater running off the roof of the family chicken coop into watering troughs from which the chickens drank. Meo and his wife and their three children now live in Dickson, Okla.

Step 5: The last step of the process is to install the hose bibb. The hose bibb should be placed at the bottom of the barrel with enough room for a hose to connect to the bibb. Draw a circle around the female end of the PVC adapter and cut out the circle using the spade bit. Cover the adapter with waterproof silicone and slide the adapter into

the hole. Then wrap plumbers tape in a counter-clockwise motion around the threaded end of the bibb. Screw the bibb into the adapter. PHOTOS SUBMITTED

Passage to Portugal First Ladies return from Europe, look forward to future travels

By Drew Butler drew.butler@ardmoreite.com

S

heila Bell and Vicky Tyler recently returned from a business trip to Portugal. But the journey was far from a typical day at the office. For over 25 years the duo have served as directors of the First Ladies, a program First National Bank offers its female customers. The group focuses on social activities with an emphasis on group travel. Vicky Tyler, senior vice president and trust officer, said the program is a great way for the bank to connect with its customers. “We get to know these people and they put their trust in us,” Tyler said. “They enjoy banking with us for that reason.” Sheila Bell, senior vice president/marketing officer, said the group has literally traveled the world over the years, but they are always looking for new places to visit. “Each year when we start planning our trips, we try to think about where we haven’t been,” Bell said. “So we ask

some of our ladies where they want to go. We also look into whatever happens to be the new ‘hot’ tourist destination.” Tyler said one of the most interesting parts of their recent trip to Portugal was sailboat trip to tour the caves and rock formations off the nation’s southern coast. “Went out on a huge sailboat, and when we got out to a certain point, there are caves in the water,” Tyler said. “Then we broke into groups and got onto smaller dinghies to tour around the caves.” She said another fascinating aspect of the trip was a visit to a cork production facility. Almost 50% of the world’s cork is produced in Portugal. “It was really very interesting and educational. They showed how they make the corks for the wine bottles and the different types of corks they make,” Tyler said. ‘We also learned about how they harvest it form the tree. You can actually see where they have removed the cork from the bottom of the tree.” Bell pointed that cork is used
