On the day of writing this I awoke to the disturbing and dreadfully sad news that a Malaysian Airlines passenger jet, Flight MH17 was shot from the sky over the Ukraine killing 298 people. The news has been met with horror around the world and not just horror, but also disbelief in Malaysia, where distress at the loss was amplified by the sheer incredulity of facing a second air disaster in four months. Malaysia Airlines flight MH370, carrying 239 people, vanished on a flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing Angela Bennett, Editor in March. It has yet to be found despite a massive international search. The coincidence is giving me chills. By the time you read this more will have been uncovered, but setting aside, for a moment, the tragic loss of life, for Malaysian Airlines the coincidence is ruinous. Even though it is likely not at all their fault, it will be human nature for many people to avoid flying with them. The night before these events I had just finished reading The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt in which she used a quote from Albert Einstein “Coincidence is God’s way of remaining anonymous.” While I don’t believe God had anything to do with these recent events, coincidence is a strange, curious and often unnerving thing. Here are some of the world’s extraordinary coincidences as reported by Jamie Frater in ListVerse: While American novelist Anne Parrish was browsing bookstores in Paris in the 1920s, she came upon a book that was one of her childhood favourites. She picked up the book and showed it to her husband. He took the book, opened it, and on the flyleaf found the inscription: ‘Anne Parrish, 209 N. Weber Street, Colorado Springs’, it was Anne’s very own book. In 2002, Seventy-year-old twin brothers died within hours of one another after separate and unrelated accidents on the same road in northern Finland. In 1930s Detroit, a man named Joseph Figlock was to become an amazing figure in a young (and, apparently, incredibly careless) mother’s life. As Figlock was walking down the street, the mother’s baby fell from a high window onto Figlock. The baby’s fall was broken and Figlock and the baby were unharmed. A year later, the self-same baby fell from the self-same window, again falling onto Mr Figlock as he was passing beneath. Once again, both of them survived the event. In Monza, Italy, King Umberto I, went to a small restaurant for dinner, accompanied by his aide-de-camp, General Emilio Ponzia-Vaglia. When the owner took King Umberto’s order, the King noticed that he and the restaurant owner were virtual doubles, in face and in build. Both men began discussing the striking resemblances between each other and found many more similarities. They were both born on the same day, of the same year, (March 14, 1844). They had been born in the same town. They both married a woman with the same name, Margherita. On 29 July 1900, King Umberto was informed that the restaurateur had died that day in a mysterious shooting accident, and as he expressed his regret, he was then assassinated by an anarchist in the crowd. There are many, many extraordinary coincidences that have happened, and no doubt some uncanny ones in your own life from time to time. Let’s hope that there are no more involving airlines, and that the superstition that bad luck happens in threes (originating from Shakespeare's play Macbeth) is just that – a superstition.

orking from a rural property 7km from Oxford, Stephanie Evans has, over the past 15 years, developed a burgeoning beauty product business. From developing products for her own sensitive skin in her kitchen to now outsourcing to two South Island factories, supplying 16 different products to more than 250 retailers throughout New Zealand this is a success story that needs to be told. I caught up with Stephanie to discover more about her driving interest in the beauty product world and her brand Oasis Beauty… What inspired you to begin the complicated task of developing affordable ‘good’ beauty products for sensitive skin? I was turning the big 3-0 and tired of using products that made promises but never improved my sensitive, blemish-prone skin that was also, quite alarmingly, starting to show signs of ageing. Having far-fromperfect skin was affecting my self-confidence and I wasn’t in a position to spend a lot of money on what I considered at the time to be ‘the good stuff’. During that time, I stumbled across a book about natural skin care with some basic recipes. I decided to give them a try, got hooked and the rest is history! What type of ingredients do you use and how did you develop the ‘science’ behind the brand? My very first formulations were basic but I quickly noticed that my skin was responding, which spurred me on. The next decade was spent researching, developing and testing formulations to find the perfect balance of natural ingredients combined with sunscreen and vitamins A, C, B5 and E, to ensure my products improved and protected my skin without irritating it.

Stephanie Evans We don’t use perfume or ‘parfum’ which contain hundreds of different chemicals to make the fragrance. Instead we use very simplistic compound oils that provide a nice sensory experience without loading up the skin with all sorts of unnecessary stuff. You won’t find any fragrance in Oasis Sun SPF30+ as it’s used on babies and children and I wanted to keep the formulation as simple as possible. Who is your target market? The majority are women aged 29 to 55 who, like me, have been frustrated with the hopein-a-bottle promises. A lot of women lack selfconfidence because of their appearance. I know what that’s like and it’s the best part of my job to turn that around. I think I look better at 46 than I did at 36.
What has been your greatest breakthrough in developing Oasis Beauty? During those 10 years of research and development, I trained as a beauty therapist so I could understand the skin better. One of the things I realised quite early on was that the sun was the main culprit causing premature ageing. It was clear that as I lived ‘down-under’ where the sun is at its most fierce, I needed to address this. It took a long time but I found a way to incorporate broadspectrum SPF25 sun protection into the day moisturisers without it feeling heavy, greasy or blocking pores and causing breakouts. Your products are for sensitive skin. Do they contain fragrance? Some of them do and some of them don’t, depending on their purpose and formulation.
You are an avid animal supporter– how has this affected your business development? Animals need us to speak up for them and if Oasis Beauty can play a small part to ensure they are treated with respect, then it’s been worth it. Stripping their environment or killing for financial gain, factory farming, animal testing, the list goes on. I can’t bear it and Oasis Beauty will always stand up for animals. In fact, we have a whole farmyard of rescue animals here at the Oasis Head Cottage that we take care of. Where do you do all your packaging and processing orders for your online store www.oasisbeauty.co.nz? We keep it personal and everything is done at Oasis Head Cottage, which is an old railway cottage about 7km out of Oxford. I employ some lovely local ladies who process orders and pack them up so every delivery feels like you are receiving a special present. How do you keep your price point so competitive? I’m adamant that the Oasis range is kept as affordable as possible so everybody can have great skin. Nothing is over $50, yet the
formulations are premium. The trade-off is that we have to keep our operating expenses lean, which means no fancy offices or frills. Because I’m an introvert, this suits me fine. I don’t need to leave the house. On a more personal note; what is your favourite item of clothing? I’m a girlie girl and have a few Charlie Brown dresses. I don’t know why, because I hardly go anywhere! My favourite is a green floral satin dress with a big party bow at the back like we would wear when we were 10 and going to a birthday party. I feel so feminine, happy and girly when I wear it. It’s got a vintage feel, which I’m into and you definitely have to wear gloves with it. If you could go back and tell your teenage self something what would it be? Be yourself. The world worships an original. What is your proudest achievement? Being Marty Schmidt’s friend. He was the most compelling person I’ve ever met. He rang me many years ago to say he had just climbed Mt Everest and had used Oasis Sun SPF30+ and “it was the best sunscreen he had ever used in his 30 years of climbing”. Marty endorsed it without payment from me, because I couldn’t afford to pay and just because he believed in me and the products. We became good friends over the years and I miss him dearly. 27 July 2014 is the 1st anniversary of his death, along with his son, Denali, on K2. I am a better person because of Marty. He encouraged me to keep going when things got tough. I miss him. What is one thing Metropol readers would be surprised to know about you? There’s a lot about me that would surprise you as most people judge a book by its cover. Suffice to say, it hasn’t been a dream ride. In my younger days, I’ve hit lows where I’ve had no place to go and had to sleep rough. My partner, Ian, has been my rock and cheerleader for over 20 years and I couldn’t have achieved what I have without his support though the very bad times.

It's been six years since Apple launched its App Store and TechCrunch celebrated with this fascinating look at the current state of the world of iPhone and iPad apps. Of the 1.6 million apps launched since 2008, 21% are now dead leaving 1.2 million currently available. Apple says 800 apps are downloaded per second but some observers point to trends that suggest people no longer use a wide variety of apps but instead are "power users" of just a few.

Apple and IBM are teaming up Credit card use can predict illness

helly Palmer reports: Apple and International Business Machines will work together to create business software for iPhone and iPad users, setting aside a three-decade-old rivalry to cater to an increasingly mobile workforce. IBM’s staff will sell Apple devices to its business customers, and the two companies will work together to develop applications tailored to work with IBM’s data analytics and cloud services, the companies said recently. Apple also will offer customer-service support for
the apps. The partnership helps Apple pursue a bigger slice of the market for corporate users of smartphones and tablets. Working with its erstwhile foe also may help IBM chase other technology giants — including Apple — that have done a better job seizing on the mobile-computing boom. For patients of Carolinas HealthCare System, which operates the largest group of medical centres in North and South Carolina, such a day could be sooner than they think. Carolinas HealthCare, which runs more than 900 care centres, including hospitals, nursing homes, doctors’ offices, and surgical centres, has begun plugging consumer data on 2 million people into algorithms designed to identify high-risk patients so that doctors can intervene before they get sick. Factory reset doesn’t wipe all data

A new study from security software vendor Avast calls into question the effectiveness of Android’s factory reset option, which many people have relied upon to delete personal data from their old smartphones before reselling or making a charitable donation with the old device. Avast — known for its security software on Windows, Mac, and
Android — purchased 20 Android smartphones from eBay, which has around 80,000 used smartphones for sale at any given time. Among the data that Avast employees recovered from the phones were more than 40,000 photos — including 250 nude male selfies — 750 emails and text messages, 250 contacts, the identities of four phones’ previous owners, and one completed loan application. t seems strange thinking about the Culverden Christmas Fête already, but organisers advise that it requires a lot of forward planning by visitors who will need to take the day off work to attend. This year it is in the same place – Wynyard, Culverden on Thursday 30 October from 10am – 4pm. The Fête is in its 23rd year and is going from strength to strength with a new, younger, enthusiastic, creative team on board. The 200 stallholders, who hail from throughout NZ, have been chosen for their quality, creativity and flair and the final line up is exciting. Michael van de Elzen, of TV fame, will be in the FMG Demonstration Marquee at 10.45am and 2pm (free entry) and with his good humour and good nutritious cooking he will be thoroughly entertaining. The Pimms Tent will again be in full swing, as will “Hop Baron” who craft brew traditional ales in Christchurch with their own antipodean twist. The music in the Food & Wine area is by the well-known Christchurch duo “Assembly Required” they will be playing throughout the day. Neerlandia Choir

he Neerlandia Choir is a choir, whose founding members have their roots in the Netherlands. It was founded 32 years ago. Besides songs in Dutch language the choir's repertoire includes items in English, German, Italian, Russian and Latin. The core of the members are the people who originate from all over the Netherlands. Neerlandia Choir’s musical director is Bruce Blanchard and his accompanist is Michael Zon (organ and Piano). Fantastic Fringe Festival for city
F
or the first time in 15 years Christchurch will have a Fringe Festival. Although the event in 2014 will be small and frugal the aim is to make the festival fantastic in future years. The Fab Four Collective has announced that the Christchurch Fringe Festival will be from 13-31 October. Fab Four Collective member and El Pancho, Sam Fisher says the aim is to encourage performance. “We want some of the incredibly talented people, or their friends or family or people they know or have met, or anyone really, in Christchurch, to create an event, exhibition, or production or gig and be part of fringe Fringe Festival 14. Sam feels he is qualified to be part of the event as he was on the NZ Fringe Trust in Wellington once and good mates with the previous Fringe organiser in Christchurch. “This is about fun, participation and giving it a go,” he said. “The festival is the fringe of Fringe festivals, aspiring to be as fabulous as the successful NZ Fringe in Wellington, and the excellent festivals in Dunedin and Auckland, but actually better in the long term,” said Sam. "We already have one to be announced sponsor, but need more. Preferably with money," he said. Performance poets, local theatre groups and comics and other entertainers have
been approached or have already been in contact and the programme will be developed during August. Programme Campeonísimo and Collective member Christy Ballantyne says acts are being assembled, “We know of some plays, some poets and a couple of other entertainers who want to be part of this fantastic event, and we will be announcing them as they sign up in coming weeks.” The Fab Four Collective are currently investigating the most important thing for modern events: the slogan, but have rejected Giving Christchurch an F after it failed focus group testing. Further work is planned. Increased weirdness is promised.

here’ll be a frosty feeling in Christchurch when NZ IceFest returns in September, transforming part of the Central City into an ice station and bringing Antarctica to the world. From 27 September – 12 October, Christchurch will play host to a range of Antarctic-themed activities, seminars, exhibitions and educational programmes aimed at giving an insight into the mysterious continent. NZ IceFest Director Chloë Dear says the festival celebrates New Zealand’s unique relationship with Antarctica and the Southern Ocean. “New Zealand, and especially Christchurch, have close links to Antarctica. Our city is the gateway to the continent, acting as the logistics hub for the New Zealand, Italian and American Antarctic programmes. The festival is a valuable opportunity to showcase the scientific, heritage and cultural importance Antarctica has to our city.” A sneak preview of the 2014 programme has been unveiled on the new-look website, www.nzicefest.co.nz.

Confidence returns in the CBD T
he plans for the future development of Christchurch’s CBD have been released, and they look set to bring all the ambience and culture back to the city centre at long last. The project has a completion date of 2016 and will see select pre-quake hotspots return refurbished, as well as welcome many exciting new developments. Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee is confident with how the Government is ‘filling in the gaps’ in Christchurch’s business centre. Three new and privately-owned buildings will house 13 government agencies and open up roughly 1100 government worker positions, simultaneously encouraging an influx of business in the city centre. The buildings – Grand Central, Cashel Square Stage I and Cashel Square Stage II – while creating positions for government workers will also have additional space to house private tenants, retail establishments and car parking facilities. “These buildings are in or on the edge of the Retail Precinct, meaning an influx of 1100 people into shops and food outlets in the city each day,” Brownlee says. Alongside the three anchor buildings, The Strip will return to a picturesque setting for retail

An open-plan courtyard extends from here to Colombo Street, providing a seamless pedestrian thoroughfare flanked by beloved boutiques through Cashel Mall’s new Retail Precinct. The Bus Exchange also returns redesigned, while new architectural establishments like the Metro Sports Facility, the Justice and Emergency Services Precinct and the North Frame and Margaret Mahy Family Playground add to a portfolio of attractions that help restore Christchurch’s iconic identity. The idea is to have a mixture of leading businesses and facilities within a handy and versatile perimeter. The government will invest $170 million in Christchurch over the next 20 years, reinstating the CBD as a modern city centre that essentially thrives with its society and stands as a ‘traditionally Christchurch’ destination for tourism and local entertainment. By creating a flurry of new precincts the Government hopes businesses and customers alike will be confidently drawn back to the CBD, and in turn see it become the reliable and fundamental hub it once was. “Development of the anchor projects combined with an increasing stream of private sector buildings is providing confidence to other investors that the CBD will be an economically viable and thriving space,” Brownlee Says. t was an eye for opportunity that led Toby Macalister to make the most of circumstances which found ‘Watsons Auctions’, as it was previously known, looking for new premises back in 2011. The new WT Macalister opened its door at 330 St Asaph Street at the end of last year the smart new gallery and auction house is a combination unique to New Zealand, and one which has been eagerly embraced by the people of Christchurch. By the end of the year it had successfully staged the ‘AA Deans Art Trust Collection’, ‘The Silver Sale’, offering one of the largest collections of silver to be held in New Zealand, and the ‘Grahame Sydney –Robin Judkins Collection’. These sales were all single vendor collections and all made record prices. Art and art exhibitions are the core of the business, with the market for quality New

o your gums bleed when you brush or floss? Are some of your teeth sensitive to cold or when you bite? Does one of your teeth feel like it's a little loose? Dr David Walsh, clinician at the dental practice Dentistry on Merivale, has over 25 years' experience in dentistry and he talked to Metropol about the implications of these symptoms. “If you answered yes to any of these questions you may have 'gum disease', otherwise known as gingivitis or the more advanced problem of periodontitis. Just what does this mean? Firstly - a little anatomy. Teeth are suspended in their bony sockets with a tissue called the 'periodontal ligament', which is a very thin layer of tissue that holds the tooth root in the bone. The gums (or 'gingiva') sit like a skin over the bone and are rolled up against the 'neck' of the tooth. There is a small space around the tooth at this level, just below the 'gum line', called the 'sulcus'. In healthy gums, this sulcus is usually 2-3mm deep. A rough or unclean surface on the tooth root within this space will cause inflammation, or bruising, on the inside surface of the gum tissue. It is this inflammation that leads to gum disease. The rough surface can be caused by many things, including rough fillings, decay, plaque or tartar - a hard mineralised deposit that slowly builds up on most tooth surfaces of most people. If left untreated, the inflammation of the gingiva can lead to swelling of the gum as well as loss of tooth attachment to the bone. The gums will bleed easily, the root will be less protected, and the deepening space will be increasingly difficult to clean. Painful infection and tooth loss can be the end result. Prevention is the
key, so we recommend frequent and regular dental hygiene visits, as well as careful daily home care. The treatment of advancing gum disease involves many steps beyond the scope of this brief explanation. Advanced gum disease may require treatment with a periodontist, who is a dentist who has specialised training in this area.

Featuring a wide range of boutique shops, The Tannery has become, over the past 12 months, Christchurch’s new fashion centre, and the impressive clothing available at Alchemy Equipment is certainly going to attract even more people in search of quality with a new look. any people strive to create their dream home. Karen Crisp has created her dream pharmacy on the corner of Wairakei and Greers roads in Bryndwr. The bright, warm and spacious pharmacy is a metaphorical world away from the little community pharmacy directly across the road that Karen bought in 1990. “We opened the new pharmacy in January,” Karen says. “When this larger space became available I just jumped at the opportunity to relocate. I was able to completely gut the space and develop a purpose-built pharmacy to cater for all the healthcare services I wanted to be able to offer to the local community and to people from further afield in the city.” Crisps Healthy Living Pharmacy is much more than a conventional pharmacy. It’s a one-stop shop for customers’ well-being and healthcare needs with its motto of “Your pharmacy in sickness and in health”. Karen has been the President of the Pharmacy Guild of New Zealand for three years, which has enabled her to observe international trends in the pharmacy profession, especially the trend towards integration of a range of
services within a pharmacy premises. “In the new pharmacy I wanted to provide the most effective ways of helping customers and patients with their health concerns and requirements.” Healthcare, information and advice from pharmacists and a service for supporting patients with long-term conditions to manage their medicines are just part of what’s offered at Crisp’s Healthy Living Pharmacy. There are also three consultation rooms on-site where customers can seek advice in private from the trained staff or have a free blood pressure check, zinc test or weight loss coaching.

Pomegranate molasses dressing 1 tsp fennel seeds 1 small garlic clove roughly chopped ¼ C (60ml) lemon juice 2 Tbsp runny honey 2 Tbsp pomegranate molasses 2 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil
Serves 4-6
Preheat oven to 200C. Line two oven trays with baking paper or grease well with olive oil. Slice eggplants into 1.5cm rounds, then cut each round into quarters (or bite-sized pieces if you prefer). Transfer eggplant to oven trays, drizzle with olive oil and season well with sea salt and black pepper. Using your hands, mix well to evenly coat the eggplant in oil. Spread slices out in a single layer and roast for 15-20 minutes or until golden underneath. Flip each piece over and cook for a further 10 minutes or until golden on both sides and tender right through. Remove from the oven and set trays aside to cool to room temperature. Meanwhile, make the dressing by pounding the fennel seeds in a mortar and pestle, adding the garlic and pounding until smooth. Add lemon juice, honey and pomegranate molasses. Stir in olive oil in a steady stream, while mixing, to form a lovely emulsified dressing. Season to taste with sea salt and black pepper. To serve, arrange alternate layers of eggplant, cherry tomatoes, crumbled feta and herbs onto a serving platter. Drizzle with as much of the dressing as you like and serve. Any leftover dressing will store in a glass jar in the fridge for one week.

A culinary holy trinity: Mercato, Seresin, and Olio Nuovo
O
lio Nuovo is the freshest possible extra virgin olive oil you can find. When you put a spoonful of it in your mouth, you experience a creamy, bright, pungent and peppery flavour; a pleasantly tart burst of fresh olive oil taste. It’s not filtered or even allowed to settle the way most oil is, but bottled straight away after being pressed, so it may be somewhat cloudy due to particulate matter and moisture. You need to consume Olio Nuovo quite quickly, as fruit particles in suspension will begin to ferment and the oil will mellow over a couple of months. It would be sacrilege to use it for heating and cooking, however! In Italy the annual release of Olio Nuovo is one of the few occasions you will find Italians dipping bread directly into oil, and savouring a piece of grilled bread with oil and just a pinch of sea salt. Marlborough-based Seresin Estate’s three properties are planted with 5,000 olive trees – all imported Tuscan varieties chosen for their fresh, peppery and intense flavour. Fruit from the Leccino, Minerva, Frantoio, Pendolino and Maurino trees are blended to
produce extra virgin olive oil. Seresin’s Olio Nuovo is the oil in its most intense, raw state, as it is enjoyed in Italy. Each year the flavours vary slightly, but give

I
n the 1970s, it was jelly moulds. In the 1980s, it was frozen yogurt. And for the past decade – cupcakes, cupcakes and more cupcakes. This decade’s defining dessert – the macaron.
But not just any macaron, the perfect macaron. Architecture and Amisfield The Amisfield Cellar Door & Bistro building Built in 2002, Amisfield’s Cellar Door & Bistro overlooking Lake Hayes near Queenstown, was designed by leading architectural firm Warren and Mahoney. This three-storey building incorporates 1,500 tonnes of Glenorchy schist with the interior design based around hefty beams salvaged from a bridge being demolished in the southern part of the region. Taking two years to construct, the building houses a wine cellar in the basement, the Cellar Door and Bistro on the ground level, and offices on the third.
The Amisfield Winery building Built in 2006, Amisfield’s Winery is hunkered into the foothills below the Pisa mountain rage in the middle of the Estate vineyard. Designed by Christchurch architect Charlie Nott and built of concrete and COR-TEN steel, this building houses Amisfield’s state-of-the-art gravity fed Pinot Noir winery. The long roof line matches the fall of the surrounding hills, while native plantings ground the building amongst the surrounding Estate vineyards.

Building consent activity steady T
he latest residential building consent figures released recently show the demand for new residential properties continues to be steady at a monthly building consent rate of 1,922 for the first five months of 2014. Statistics New Zealand figures released showed 2,125 new dwelling and apartment consents issued in May 2014, compared with 2,082 in April. Registered Master Builders Association (RMBA) CEO Warwick Quinn says that the overall trend has stabilised after two years of strong growth. Quinn expects some 23,000 – 24,000 residential building consents to be issued in 2014 up from 21,300 in 2013 and 16,929 in 2012. The two main centres of Auckland and Canterbury still make up nearly 60% of all activity and this is expected to continue. Quinn says, “Auckland’s growth over the last 12 months is 30% higher than the previous 12 month period while Canterbury’s is 40% higher, mostly on the back of Christchurch City doubling the number of consents issued
in the last year as the Canterbury region’s rebuild gets underway”. The rest of New Zealand continues to be steady he says and RMBA has yet to see any significant impact from the recent rises in the official cash rate and the consequential impact on mortgage interest rates. Mr Quinn says the identification of special housing areas in Auckland, and more recently Wellington, has not yet manifested in any upturn in consenting levels. He says an immediate response was never likely given it takes time to work through the feasibility analysis and then the resource and building consent process but the results should come. He says over the last 20 years New Zealand’s residential construction rate has fallen from six builds per 1,000 population to around four per 1,000, resulting in reduced supply while population has continued to grow. The nonavailability of land is the key driver; this needs to be corrected if overall property prices are to be contained Quinn says.

Designer’s work brings her home designer like myself.” Nichola divides her time between Christchurch and Auckland to provide face to face contact for clients, with the following design work and communication covered by email and phone. “If clients need me on site at vital stages of a new build or renovation, I also dedicate time in those situations when required,” says Nichola, who has always worked remotely throughout her career to cater for jobs and clients in other locations. While kitchen and bathroom design are her areas of speciality, the work often extends into others areas of the house, including full home renovations and new builds. “I always look at a home as a whole, rather than one aspect in isolation,” says Nichola. “I quickly get a feel for what clients want and then have a clear vision of what needs to be done and see flooring, finishes and lighting as absolutely essential in achieving a cohesive and successful design.” A career in design had always been in mind for Nichola, who describes her time living in Europe and the constant exposure to incredible architecture and interiors, as a turning point. She returned to complete her Bachelor of Design in Interior Architecture in 2000 in Sydney, with the renovation of an inner city apartment one of the first jobs she took on. It was a whirlwind six months, with Nichola

“It was a great success - the clients were thrilled,” says Nichola, who credits the job with kick starting her design business. It is this passion for design and attention to detail which enabled Nichola to return to Christchurch and create a name for herself as an independent designer. Whilst creating wonderful designs and very satisfied clients is the end product of each job, the relationships she develops with her clients is a favourite aspect of her work. “I love helping people and making a job, that for them can be quite daunting, become fun and easy,” says Nichola.

T
he notion of taking ‘gaps’ and treating them in a creative manner, following the quakes, offered our city a symbol of regeneration, when it felt as though all else was lost. It illustrated an ability to think about, and deal with, recovery, while bringing a quirky, fun undertone to the devastation. For me, the issue at hand when it comes to debating Gap Filler is identifying the difference between Gap Filler and temporary structures. While one offers a creative outlet, the other is purely driven by commercial gain. Gap Filler provides a public service. It is a not-for-profit organisation, which is investing creative energy into spaces across the city by providing us something to enjoy. Its ability to provoke discussion, debate and thought should be seen as a positive. It is allowing our design community to experiment, while allowing the people of Christchurch to experience how we might like our city to take shape. Whereas on the other hand, there are the temporary structures that have emerged
from the motivation to meet the city’s service needs. Gap Filler takes inspiration, passion and creativity from the city and its people, and invests it back in the form of an interactive architectural form; while pop-up structures offer an amenity to the people. What we have now is some prominent sites along the gateway to the city continuing to be treated in a post-quake manner. Consider Victoria Street, it is becoming a remarkable area with immense commercial awareness. It offers a signal of hope in the speed in which new structures are being

Yes there is a commercial reality, and the owners of these pop-up ventures are within their rights to make money, but the bottom line is now is the time for this to end. With the rebuilding of our city well and truly underway we no longer need to be relying

central city. Beginning at the Re:Start Mall, a Gap Filler, or art trail could lead visitors on a journey through the city; just imagine the commercial development that would follow. However it should be said that Gap Filler is not the answer to everything and it has to be the exception and not the rule. Some Gap Fillers can be basic, but at their very least they are inspiring and generating thought around the use of space and urban design. As we rebuild the city, Gap Filler should be embraced for its ability to allow us to experiment with space and time. Transitional architecture saw us embrace the Cardboard Cathedral and offer public spaces for congregation, while the best solution for rebuild was found. Perhaps the long-term solution for Gap Filler is through the dedication of permanent spaces in the city to transitional architecture. Having ‘gaps’ that are designed to become public exhibition platforms for design, form and structure. Gap Filler needs to be considered as part of us, not who we are. It allowed the city to be innovative and responsive to a unique event in time. We should be celebrating the way it has made us feel, and the manner in which it has inspired us, as a city, to be passionate, creative and to think outside the box, when it comes to rebuilding a beautiful and creative city. www.caarc.co.nz

e’s a business owner and senior consultant of the award-winning Harcourts gold franchise, not to mention one of the highest performing real estate sales consultants worldwide, so Metropol asked Cameron Bailey about the post-quake real estate market and the best piece of advice he’s ever received. What’s the real estate market like at the moment in Canterbury? The market is still very busy but not as heated as last year. I talk in my appraisals that I believe the market is like “balls bouncing on a table”, some areas and price levels are showing more demand than others. Areas that “bounced” high last year may not have quite the same demand this year and vice versa. You will find for well-priced properties there is still strong demand and buyers are still prepared to compete for good properties. I think there has been a change from last year and now more than ever there is a lot more skill and experience required to extract premium prices in the current marketplace. If you hadn’t gone into real estate, where do you think your career would have taken you? Believe it or not, from the age of about eight I wanted to be a doctor and went through Health Sciences at University, I then ended up moving to London where I lived for six years. When I came back I actually even looked at Homeopathic Medicine as a career, but at the same time caught the real estate bug and I’ve never looked back. What’s the best part of your job? It has to be exceeding my vendors’ expectations in the auction rooms, and seeing how excited they get when they sometimes sell their house for $60,000-$80,000 more than reserve. I also love the ongoing relationships we build up with clients as you sell them their first homes and then over the years move them up the property ladder. How do you find juggling a demanding real estate role with a young family? Always tough, having identical twin girls that are almost four years old is challenging but I am lucky enough to have fantastic
support from my partner and family that enables me to do what I do, and for that I can’t thank them enough. What’s the biggest selling type of property in the Christchurch market at the moment? In a busy market, most things are selling well but are all price dependent. I think one of the most buoyant areas of the market today is high end properties. I believe that “$2m is the new $1m” with strong numbers of buyers and demand for properties over $2M, and as high as $5m. A lot of people have recently surfaced with insurance cheques to spend so a great time to sell this level of property, which I think may change as new freshly-built properties come to the market in the next year or so increasing choices and options for buyers. What’s the best piece of advice you have ever received? “When the tide goes out you can see who’s wearing togs!” Stephen Collins (Harcourts legend) told me this a few years ago and I think it’s so true and still makes me laugh. Why did you choose to build your career with Harcourts and in particular, Harcourts Gold? With Harcourts being the biggest real estate company in Christchurch I never considered anywhere else, and then the choice of Harcourts gold, and the opportunity to work with John and Lynette McFadden who are internationally regarded as the best in the business, was a no-brainer for me. There is strength in numbers and to have a team of hundreds of other agents and their buyers being able to sell my listings can only achieve good results for a vendor. I have just seen this achieved by selling a property in Burwood where they had been trying to sell privately, then listed with another real estate company and eventually came to me where I achieved a sale within a week for more than the vendors’ expectations.
How do you prefer to unwind in the weekends? Unfortunately there are no weekends in real estate and I generally work seven days a week with Saturday and Sunday being some of my busiest days. Currently I relax and de-stress at the gym every morning at 6.00am and have recently been trying a bit of yoga but still can’t touch my toes!

t’s July – the coldest part of winter if you subscribe to the truism that the worst of winter arrives after the shortest day. ecent warm nor’westerly spells and the appearance of shoots on many of our roses have tempted some of us to think spring is just around the corner. One enjoyable activity which is becoming more popular is the concept of an ‘outdoor kitchen’ – something of a step up from the conventional notion of a barbecue, and you might like to give some thought to this before the warmer weather arrives. Pretty much any food can be prepared outside. Grilled items, sauces, dips, vegetables – they all work well in an outdoor kitchen. Before you get carried away, however, check www.ecan.govt.nz/air or phone Customer Services on 03 353 9007. Outdoor fires are not allowed without a resource consent in any residentially-zoned area. Exceptions are barbecues, hangi, umu and appliances that burn with a blue flame. The most basic item is of course a barbecue grill. A
chimenea is an interesting addition, although does require resource consent in any residentially-zoned area or in any Clean Air Zone in Canterbury. Pronounced (chim-in-eeya), Spanish for fireplace, chimeneas are functional works of art that are great conversational pieces and make an elegant addition to any outdoor deck, courtyard or patio. The Mexicans have been using chimeneas as effective heaters and cooking appliances for hundreds of years. They have been introduced to the western world relatively recently over the past twenty-five years as we turn more to outdoor living. A chimenea can be used for cooking simple items, such as hot dogs or sausages. However, they do burn solid fuel, with a yellow flame like ambient outdoor fires, braziers and pizza ovens, so check regulations carefully first. It is ideal to have a shelter, such as a roof or overhang so that the outdoor kitchen does not get wet, and if you go about this in the right way (storage cabinets) you can permanently keep items such as rotisserie, toaster oven, and other utensils in a safe and dry environment. It is important to have cabinets that leave enough ventilation around the cooking equipment and to use a qualified
electrician for all electrical work. A simple toaster oven can be used for a variety of outdoor cooking events. You can heat up refried beans in a casserole dish, or you can heat up rice or other casseroles. You save by not heating up the inside of your house in the warmer weather, and cooking outside lets the cook enjoy the outdoors. A single burner can perform a variety of cooking tasks – stir fry, cook rice or to steam veggies. The settings may be different than a regular stove, but practice will help you determine which are best. If you are having an oriental barbecue, you can grill the teriyaki chicken outside while stir frying veggies at the same time. Plugging your rotisserie into an outdoor kitchen gives other options to grilled meats. A blender is a good idea – use it to mix smoothies for brunches or to make margaritas for dinner. Find a benchtop company and see if they can provide off-cuts – granite is a good idea – for cutting and preparation surfaces. Start thinking about the possibilities now – an outdoor kitchen is great for entertaining or just as a family dinner alternative – and you could be enjoying its benefits when spring finally does arrive.

ompeting in the small car segment has always been a tough game to play in, but these days it just keeps getting tougher. Just like trying to choose which car to buy in the segment… Kia haven’t made it any easier by releasing the rather good and extremely good-looking hatch version of the Cerato, either. We take one for a bit of a thrash and are impressed.
OUTSIDE Likes: Looks sensational, especially in the greyish/brownish metallic of our test car. Brilliant wheels suit the colour too. Looks particularly sexy from the rear 3/4 angle. Dislikes: The corporate grille is heavyhanded and clunky in comparison to the swooping lines of the rest of the car: the car is graceful and European looking, the grille isn’t…
UNDER THE BONET Likes: The 110kW/178Nm 1.8-litre fourcylinder petrol engine feels like it will free up nicely, but ours only had 850km on it so was still relatively tight. Six-speed transmission is slick and smooth, particularly on the upshift. Dislikes: But it can be a bit ragged on the downshift. Hopefully engine will free up, otherwise it is a bit reluctant. Sounds a bit strained in the upper revs.
ON THE ROAD Likes: Handling light years better than Korean cars of only a few years back. Light and nimble. Tons of grip. Steering is responsive and direct. Probably the best stability control calibration of any Korean car. Dislikes: Of the three levels of steering assistance, none of them really nail it properly and it is relatively mute. Will understeer when pushed, but not unforgivably.
INSIDE Likes: Nicely designed and laid out interior. Startling level of spec – a heated and ventilated driver’s seat! Sat nav/infotainment unit is a wonderfully intuitive thing to use and it works beautifully too. Dislikes: Still quite a lot of hard surfaces, albeit of a good quality. Odd ridges on dash and door panels are distracting. Trip computer screen is cluttered. Seats look great, but are a little hard and wide.
VERDICT The Kia Cerato is a sensation-looking hatch that does pretty much everything well. But nothing spectacularly. Nothing wrong with this and many, many people will be very happy with a Cerato. And rightfully so too, after all it is sharply-priced, remarkably well specced, extremely user-friendly and, as mentioned previously, very good-looking. In fact, if you were to step into one from a mainstream Japanese or Korean car that is a few years old, chances are you will be extremely impressed. the glorious M156 6.2 litre naturally aspirated V8. The regular C63 produces 336kW but the 507 gets a 37kW power hike to 373kW (507hp), hence the name. Plus, thanks to the AMG Drivers Pack, a zero to 100km/h time of a blistering 4.2 seconds and the lack of a speed limiter means a 280km/h top speed. AMG’s Speedshift seven-speed automatic box also makes an appearance, which isn’t bad. Press the start button and like a junkyard dog, it growls into life. Blip the throttle and the growl becomes a snarl, rev hard to the redline and the snarl becomes a bellowing roar. Contrary to appearances, the 507 is fairly docile around town.

I
t’s hard when saying goodbye to a close friend. You reminisce about the good times once shared between the two of you, and then the tissues appear in abundance. Such is my feelings towards Mercedes AMG, for the car you see here, the C63 AMG Edition 507, is the last naturally aspirated V8 road burner C-Class we will see. You might think this is just another Frankenstein creation from the unhinged engineers at AMG, but you would be wrong. While the C63 AMG is not a pretty car, the aggressive lines and edges borrowed from the Black Series, make for an imposing beast. Titanium grey 19 inch AMG alloys immediately grab your attention, along with black decals, nostrils in the bonnet, a carbon fibre rear diffuser, pumped out wheel arches and black rear lip spoiler. Inside, AMG’s performance tentacles are everywhere. The sports steering wheel, buttock hugging leather chairs and

The alcantara wheel feels tailor made to your mitts and all the interior functions like the Sat Nav and sound system are easy to understand and operate. What lies under the bonnet is what will be missed the most,
A torrent of explosive acceleration and roaring V8 thunder leaves you more awake than a Red Bull binge. A tight turning circle and plenty of all-round vision is good to see. Ride quality is firm, but never uncomfortable and as you rumble your way to your next dinner date, passers by turning their heads becomes a common occurrence. When pushing hard, a C63 commands respect and the Edition 507 is no exception. OMG, rather than AMG, is better used when putting your foot down. A torrent of explosive acceleration and roaring V8 thunder leaves you more awake than a Red Bull binge. The seven speed box is slightly delayed when shifting up, but shifting down is a real treat. Sharp turn-in and instant throttle response in Sport Plus mode leaves you hungry for more. The only downside is the 507 drinks like a football team, but who cares when you have this kind of grunt on tap. A C63 AMG with Edition 507 upgrades will cost you $181,407, a lot for a C-Class, but worth every cent. While the future is bright for the boffins at AMG, right now the 507 represents their wonderful sorcery at its best. Auf wiedersehen buddy.

Svelte yet daringly aggressive History has shown us that BMW know a thing or two about sporting coupes. So when word got out the 3 Series Coupe was to be replaced by an all-new 4 series, there was mixed reactions from enthusiasts.
I
f you grieved over the demise of the legendary 3 Coupe, do not fret, for the 4series Coupe is just as good, if not better. Prices start at $98,000 for the entry level 428i and finish at $128,500 for the range topping 435i featured here. There is no doubt the 4 series is a stunner to behold. A wider mouth, wrap around headlights and stretched shark like nose add svelte yet somehow aggressive presence. Believe it or not, the 4 Series coupe is 15kg lighter than its predecessor, though it is longer by 26mm and wider by 43mm, resulting in an overall width of 1825mm. A significantly lower roofline and wider rear does nothing but complement the overall design. The M-Sport package is a $5500 option on the 428i but is fitted as standard to 435i. This gets 19 inch M sport alloys, larger
front inlets, adaptive suspension and plenty of M badges. Inside, the driver focused cabin wraps itself around you. A spot-on driving position offers many levels of comfort. A large infotainment screen offers clear maps and menus which are accessed by BMW iDrive, which now has the sketch pad feature, allowing you to draw in a letter when searching for an address on the Sat Nav. Head and legroom is generous, though rear passengers may be a tad cramped. But why be a passenger when you can drive it. The base 428i gets a 2-litre four pot while the 435i benefits from BMW’s twin-scroll turbocharged 3-litre straight six. This engine needs no introduction, as it has been a BMW hallmark for many-a-moon. A limited 250km/h top speed (as you would expect), 225kW and
zero to 100km/h is dealt with in a mere 5.1 seconds. Four driving modes, ECO PRO, Comfort, Sport and Sport Plus can be selected, with Sport naturally being the top priority for track day warriors. The car will default to Comfort mode on start up, which

makes for a lovely motorway cruise. There are few power plants which sound as delicious as a BMW six. Burbling at first while idling, before howling close to the redline, there is plenty of joyous noise to be heard from those twin exhaust pipes. Driving dynamism, one of the best aspects about BMW coupes of old, continues in the 4 series. As in all new BMW’s, the eight-speed automatic gearbox is an absolute gem, never letting up between shifts. The twin-scroll turbo system means there is no lag, giving you access to plenty of low down power. The chassis is well sorted and weight distribution is pretty much perfect, as you devour bend after bend. In summary, if you seek an attractive, fast, practical and well equipped coupe, look no further than a 4-series.
