Dr Libby Weaver discusses the inspiration behind her ongoing nutritional advice to women, new tour, and her latest book.

dr libby weaver (née Ellis) is described as one of Australasia’s leading nutritional biochemists. Known also for her top-selling book Rushing Women’s Syndrome, the author and motivational speaker splits her time between New Zealand and Australia. Over the years, dr libby has motivated and changed many women’s perception on nutrition and wellbeing. Was there a particular event or moment in your life that inspired you to write about women’s health and nutrition? Goodness, it’s funny, because in a way i don’t feel like i consciously ‘chose’ this career path. i feel like my life has been very blessed – all i knew as a youngster was that i’d write books. writing has always been a passion. but having initially followed a very scientific career path with 14 years at university, it is a joy to use that as a foundation for my three-pillar approach to wellness: the biochemical, the nutritional and the emotional. i absolutely love the 3 NO. 13 HARCOURTS NEW ZEALAND 2012-2013

combination of the creativity i experience when I’m writing, combined with also fulfilling the analytical research/scientific component of my work. Most importantly, i believe my purpose is to help educate people about the importance of taking great care of themselves – so i’m very grateful i get to wake up every day and do this. What would you say are the key foods women should ensure they have in their diet? i’m a big believer that there is no one way that we all need to eat. we are all unique and subsequently are often nourished by different things. Our heritage, medical history and emotional states all play a role in influencing how we need to eat as an individual. however, there are a few staples everyone can benefit from. 1) A plant-rich diet. Filling most of your plate with vegetables and plenty of leafy greens. Aim for 5-7 servings of vegetables at least. 2) Nourishing fats from wholefoods, such as

avocados, olives, nuts, seeds, coconut, organic butter, oily fish, and pasturefed meats – they’re essential to sex-hormone metabolism and our ability to feel full for sustained periods. 3) Citrus fruits and berries. Not only are they high in vitamin C and other antioxidants, but they’re also the lowest fructose option when it comes to fruit – not to mention they’re delicious. two serves a day is plenty. Can you tell us a little bit about your new book, Women’s Wellness Wisdom, and what inspired you to write this? I’m passionate about helping people to lead fulfilled lives and I know from clinical experience that many people spend a good portion of their life just getting by. i want to empower people with information to help them thrive! People tolerate a foggy brain; they drag themselves around, often feel like they are a slave to everyone else or beat themselves up for not achieving their plans or dreams… and the list goes on. i want people to know there is another way to live. What is one piece of advice you would like women to take away from your local seminar Surviving To Thriving? take responsibility for your health. No one can do this for us. when we say “i don’t have time” for something, what we are essentially saying is “that is not a priority for me”. how do you feel when you say to yourself that preparing a nourishing dinner is not a priority for you? the reality is we cannot compromise our nutrition and expect to still have fantastic health. Being a spokeswoman for optimal health must come with its challenges. How do you keep motivated to stay on track with your health and wellbeing? i have a morning ritual that i don’t compromise. i also schedule my downtime and prioritise it. i know people think the word ‘gratitude’ gets overused, but i am truly grateful for life itself, plus everything i have in my life – such as clean water and fresh air. An attitude of gratitude can be very energising – as is having a clear purpose. What has been your biggest achievement to date? Sharing the stage with [American spiritual teacher] Marianne williamson. i am very grateful for her and her work, so it was very special to me to join her on stage at one of her events in the States. What is the best advice you have ever been given? it’s not advice per say, as it wasn’t anything in particular they said, but my professors had the most profound impact on my thinking. they had immensely open and highly intelligent minds, as well as a rich curiosity. this helped to foster immense growth and resulted in my own curiosity and ability to question, which has led to me to research so many different things in search of the answers myself. i always want to get to the heart of the matter for someone presenting with a particular health challenge so it can be resolved not just treated.

Victoria Tait takes a look at what has become one of the most lucrative investments known to man and provides an overview of the most valuable art collections on earth. in new Zealand, through the auction of tim and Sherrah Francis’ estate, we recently saw what a lifetime of collecting art could achieve. over 60 years of their most prized artwork sold in mere hours for a staggering $6.6 million. Among the items was Colin McCahon’s The Canoe Tainui, which sold for $1.3 million, breaking the record as the most expensive piece of art sold in new Zealand. the Francises purchased the work 50 years ago, for $500.

the collectors i’m about to introduce highlight: one, the love and appreciation of art and the artist, and two, the understanding that art is a commodity and a lucrative investment. Art can be one of the most stable, reliable investments, with the bonus that you get to appreciate the investment on your wall. exactly what kind of art will deliver the best return depends on how impatient you are. if, like tim and Sherrah, you pick the right pieces, the value of your art

collection can appreciate faster than any other commodity. Picking the right artist and the right time to let go is the key to the game. Andy Warhol’s Orange Marilyn silkscreens sold for $3300 in the 1960s, and when auctioned around the turn of the millennium, they fetched around $23 million, that’s a 102,000% increase in value in 40-odd years. What follows is a curated selection of the world’s most valuable, privately owned art collections and their collectors.

roman Abramovich and Dasha Zhukova (russia) Russia’s most powerful, art-collecting “it” couple. the Russian billionaire, Roman (49), is estimated to be worth $8.6 billion, and owns the world’s largest super yacht. described as a “Russian art doyenne”, dasha (35) launched clothing label Kova & t and founded art fashion and culture magazine, Garage, before marrying Roman in 2005. the power couple now have the most valuable privately owned art collection in the world. in 2008, the pair launched Moscow’s Garage Museum for Contemporary Art. dasha’s collection contains thousands of contemporary artworks, while her husband prefers modern and impressionist trophies. Roman is said to have bought an edgar degas pastel for $36.4 million, a 1976 Francis Bacon triptych for $118.6 million, and a Lucian Freud painting for $46.2 million.

ezra and David Nahmad (lebanon) Prior to the rise of Roman and dasha, the nahmad brothers held the most valuable art collection on the planet. Forbes quotes the chairman of Christie’s new York as saying they have “sold more art than anybody alive”. don’t assume, however, that these brothers are lovers of art; they see it purely as an investment. So much so, in fact, that they buy art then hold it in a warehouse near Geneva Airport, which means it’s tax-free. When the right time comes, they sell it on at an inflated price – an approach that has given the Nahmads a ruthless reputation in the art world. it has been estimated that there are as many as 300 Picassos held in their warehouse, which would make it the biggest collection of Picassos anywhere in the world, and valued at around $1.2 million on its own.

David Geffen (America) A high-school dropout with dyslexia, david Geffen faked a UCLA degree to land his first mailroom job – which sounds very familiar to the 1980s film The Secret of My Success, starring Michael J Fox. Unlike Fox’s character, Geffen went on to found Asylum Records, Geffen Records, and dreamWorks Animation. not too bad for a high-school dropout. david is into mid-century art and leans heavily towards American artists, including Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning and Mark Rothko. He is considered to have one of the most impressive collections of this school in the world.

eli Broad (America) A self-made billionaire who acquired his fortune through financial markets, Eli is the only person to have built two Fortune 500 companies (the top 500 companies in the US, as published by Fortune magazine each year): KBHome and SunAmerica. His interest in art dates back to 1973, when he purchased a Van Gogh drawing. Since then, his collection has expanded to include work by Jasper Johns, Jeff Koons, damien Hirst, ed Ruscha, Cindy Sherman and Andy Warhol. He is also among the group of billionaires who have joined The Giving Pledge, a commitment by the world’s wealthiest individuals and families to dedicate the majority of their wealth to philanthropy. Most promise to donate at least 50% of their fortunes. eli’s personal pledge is to give away 75% of his.

Philip Niarchos (Greece) A Greek shipping magnate who had the good fortune of inheriting around $6.8 billion and one of the world’s largest art collections, when his father Stavros niarchos died in 1996. Philip’s life is one full of drama and mystery: drug overdoses of wives, private jet crashes, love triangles, and an unproven accusation of murder. the collection is said to include the largest private stockpile of works by Van Gogh. Philip has continued to add to the collection with his most famous acquisition being Van Gogh’s iconic post-ear-chop self-portrait, bought for $98 million, and Yo Picasso, which set him back $65 million.

Francois Pinault (France) From humble beginnings working for a timber company to creating one of the largest timber import/export business, Francois Pinault knows how to make an investment. He got rich quick by floating his timber company on the French stock exchange in 1988. Since then, his company Kering (originally Pinault Group) acquired Gucci Group (which includes Gucci, YSL, Stella McCartney, McQueen and Balenciaga). He also owns Puma, Stade Rennais Football Club, the Château Latour vineyard, among many other investments. His first art purchase was Mondrian’s Tableau Losangique II at $12 million and now he owns a collection of more than 2000 pieces, with works by Mark Rothko, Andy Warhol, damien Hirst, Gerhard Richter, Cindy Sherman, Agnes Martin, Jeff Koons, Cy twombly to name a few.

SenSory Garden

Landscape architect Craig Wilson explores the sensory garden and shares some tips on how to achieve one of your own.

a garden can be so much more than a collection of plants thrown together to look good or the decorative finish around the boundary fence of your property. it can be a rich entity that touches people on a number of levels. gardens can stimulate and excite our senses, bringing a soft and natural element to our complex and busy worlds. the concept of a ‘sensory garden’ has been well used by landscape designers to create experiential and therapeutic gardens for children, the elderly and those physically or mentally challenged. this concept can equally be applied to your home garden to enrich the quality and diversity of your personal outdoor space. the most obvious experience in a garden is its visual appearance. Plant design can introduce and create living texture, form and pattern. Plants also add colour, which we tend to shy away from in Christchurch. Often i note green and white are our colours of choice, and this creates a classic and restful aesthetic. We can explore an injection of restrained colour to broaden the visual experience. a scented garden is often the result of flowering plants and is easy to create. if you want to introduce scent, try using Trachelospermum as a climber or ground cover for rich fragrance. if you’re not convinced of the benefit of this experience, try

crushing the leaves or even walking past a lemon verbena in summer and see what impression that creates. an edible element can be worked into the design of almost any garden regardless of its size. this introduces taste to your outdoor space. Don’t limit this to a vege garden tucked around the back by the clothesline. think fruiting hedges, herbs in pots, and citrus in a sheltered sunny spot close to the barbecue. this edible element will create gardening interest for children (or the grandchildren). Picking sweet fresh peas and strawberries from grandad’s garden can be an enduring memory. Plant texture will often introduce a tactile element to garden design that makes you want to touch. i can remember as a young kid just having to touch cacti at the botanic gardens – even though i knew they would be sharp. Water features add another touch experience to your space that can cool hands or feet on hot summer days. the sound of moving water adds a gentle background ambience. the crunchy sound of walking on a gravel path somehow lets me know i’m in a more natural state and brings back memories of tramping in the bush. the combined effect of activating all our senses with simple garden elements can create spaces that we are more connected with and help us feel more alive.

Some considerations unique to Auckland include: Climate There is greater flexibility in plant species which can be used in Auckland due to its warmer climate. In Christchurch, hardy and frost resistant plants are ideal whereas the Auckland climate lends itself to frost tender plantings- palms and other subtropical plants will thrive in the more temperate conditions. While the temperatures are warmer up north, the higher rainfall means there is greater demand for outdoor rooms to maximise the use of the outdoor space year round. Rainfall Irrigation in Christchurch’s drier climate is a significant consideration for many projects. As the humidity and rainfall in Auckland is higher, drainage is important. If the site is flat, has a high water table and dense soil, drainage will be critical in ensuring your landscaping remains healthy (and preventing expensive plants from being drowned and hardscaping undermined). Due to the high clay content in some parts of Auckland (such as the North Shore), regular mulching is recommended to simulate the drainage effect of a natural sub tropical forest floor. For more significant issues, a drainage plan may need to incorporate underground piping systems or trench drains. Another option is to raise the planting areas. The area raised will need to correspond with the size of a planting- a tree or shrub will need a more significant area raised, and to a greater depth, to handle the larger root ball. Raised boxes should suffice for your veggies.

Soil The variance in soil type across Auckland is significant. While dense clay may be found in some parts, there will also be volcanic rock to contend with in other areas such as Mount Eden. This will influence the type of plantings selected for the site and impact the design of any hardscaping. Timber structures requiring extensive foundations may be prohibitive in terms of cost if drilling in to rock is required. Concrete structures which sit atop may be a more cost effective option. Site size and levels Sites in Auckland are more condensed and have greater level changes than in Christchurch. Clever landscaping practices are vital to overcome these challenges and ensure all components fit in a functional way. Many of our Auckland clients also require their landscaped areas to be low maintenance to accommodate busy lifestyles bustling with work and travel. In the post quake environment, Christchurch landscaping has to contend with greater complexities in Council consenting issues- especially with the abundance of properties with stream boundaries. Fortunately, whilst there are more water front properties in Auckland, the bureaucracy around consent issues is relatively straight forward. As a nation of gardeners, New Zealanders remain reticent about budgeting appropriately for landscaping. Investing in quality landscaping of your property in Auckland or elsewhere will significantly increase its value (studies suggest by up to 16%). HigHs and Lows of HigH Street Victoria Tait searches for a silver lining in the severely damaged High Street and Christchurch city centre. Living in a rebuilding city we are all bound to experience highs and lows. i experienced a low last week when i decided to take a stroll through the city, following a route from Colombo street then down High street, as i had done on so many shopping expeditions prior to the earthquakes. i was so disappointed in the progress of this part of town and amazed there is still so much damage and destruction. Broken windows hang haphazardly from buildings, tagging draws attention to empty shells, and art insulations that were once so full of promise have lost their edge with the outdoor elements taking their toll. in the process of rebuilding, surely we should also be caring and cleaning up what has been left behind. Feeling completely deflated, I decided to explore the area further and dig up some information on what the future will look like. i am pleased to report that what was historically Christchurch’s boutique and designer fashion retail destination will be reborn. an architecturally designed precinct full of retailers we only ever dreamed of having in Christchurch is on the horizon. it’s a relief to see the determination of developers to bring this area back to life. now... if only they’d put their foot down!

ANZ Centre The $80-million complex is being built by businessman and landlord Tim glasson, on the old Triangle Centre site bordered by Colombo, Hereford, and High streets. The Million Dollar Dilemma LYNETTE MCFADDEN GOLD BUSINESS OWNER, HARCOURTS AND WELL KNOWN BUSINESSWOMAN

As a Cantabrian, it’s hard to know how to react to the blistering news released this month that the average house price in Auckland has exceeded one million dollars. ‘Average’ and ‘one million’ are terms that probably shouldn’t be in the same sentence when considering property in a country as small as ours. It puts us as a nation behind Monaco, London and New York for affordability, but well ahead of our Australian counterparts, to name a few. The actual property snapshot (QV House Price Index released on 6 September 2016) reported that the average value in New Zealand is now $612,527, the average value in Christchurch is $492,766 and the average Auckland house value is $1,013,632. Despite being a property professional, this last fact still requires a deep breath. Numerous elements appear to be driving this scenario, including low supply and high demand, strong immigration into our largest city and a heated desire for investment property. So, for what it’s worth, here is my biased take on matters.

A constant in real estate, both of these actions are easier – if not as profitable – when undertaken in Christchurch.

If you reside in Christchurch, consider yourself lucky and look to affordable suburbs such as Bishopdale, Redwood, Northcote, Somerfield, Spreydon and Richmond. But, let’s face it, the property average for just about every suburb in our entire city sits below that of Auckland.

In Auckland, trading down has become a silver lining for those selling as they pocket the gains their ownership and location have provided. But despite these gains, Aucklanders have said they fear for their children when they attempt to get on the property ladder … and who wouldn’t? The Halo Effect

Rent vs. Purchase

This delightful term relates to the corresponding increase in value and popularity of areas outside Auckland. Hamilton and Tauranga sit firmly in this camp and have seen strong increases in sales as people take funds from Auckland in their search for better value.

Currently rents in the Garden City are softening. You can stay renting but I’m in the ‘buy’ camp, believing if you’re going to contribute to someone’s mortgage it may as well be your own.

In Christchurch, after some incredible years of regeneration, we appear to be a more stable if not more affordable city and I’m entirely grateful that this still-beautiful place is where I call home.

Get on, make a purchase, do your best to debt service, and you should be handsomely rewarded in years to come.

Using two rollers together your choice becomes even better; privacy during the day and total blockout at night. Curtain ranges are huge with muted tones through to statement. What’s new this season? Shutters are becoming increasingly popular and a brand new range called Kingston is exclusive to Venluree. There is a lovely timber range available in painted colours as well as natural

timber colours. Plus an exciting new aluminium range specifically for outdoors. More good news is the new timber range called Wildwood (exclusive to Venluree) that gives you a distressed timber look in a range of colours. FOUNDER OF TREETECH What is it about being an arborist that appealed to you? At 19, I was seeking adventure. I needed to be outdoors, loved climbing trees and enjoyed working with machinery and chainsaws; so learning a trade like arboriculture was very appealing. What has ensured Treetechâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ongoing growth? Long hours, hard work and our people. The team is our strength, and we aim to employ the best. Having qualified and competent staff is vital to our company. Treetech runs an apprenticeship programme whereby we employ local staff and provide training allowing them to obtain arboricultural qualifications while they work. What do you believe is key to the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s recovery of its lost landscape and trees? Large areas of open space are being developed that incorporate specimen tree plantings, which we can showcase to the world, but to ensure the longevity of these trees they need to be planted into appropriate soil pits and maintained for future generations. It would be great to provide the right resource to ensure these trees are here for years to come. What is one common mistake people make when maintaining their own trees? Not using Treetech! Trees are great, but species selection and ensuring they are planted in an appropriate place is crucial. Often people will plant trees in a lawn situation and damage the trunk or root system with enthusiastic mowing. Trees grow better if mulch is applied. In your opinion, what is the secret to personal and professional success? Creating measurable goals and making those necessary sacrifices to achieve them. Surrounding myself with good people who I can rely on for advice and fun! To be successful, the whole company needs to be heading in the same direction. Communication, honesty, accountability and thinking outside the box are key and can only be achieved when there is a unified team with a good culture.

Founded on the spirit of southern farmers and gold miners, the area is the gateway to many small towns, a destination for thrill-seekers and an oasis of exceptional wineries. With so much on offer we’ve narrowed down our top summer, must-do activities.

Cycle tours To cycle Central otago is on many people’s bucket lists. Take a journey through breath-taking landscapes and take the time to appreciate the ever-changing mountainous, dry, rocky landscapes, and, spectacular river gorges. Many tour companies can tailor a package to your personal wants and needs. The otago Central rail Trail is the original cycle tour, and another one that takes our fancy is the luxury Cycle Tours – their premium package includes a half-day wine tour with lunch at a Central otago vineyard.

4WD Safaris if cycling is not your thing, you can still take a trail around the rugged countryside in a 4WD. There are many tours on offer, but we love the Maniototo 4WD Safaris, situated in ranfurly, as each tour is taken in an ultra-cool land rover Defender. it can take a few hours, up to all day.

trout Fishing The original gold-mining rivers now provide excellent trout fishing sites. The Taieri river and Maniototo dams, some of which run through private land, can be fished from october through to April. There is a selection of companies that offer guides and equipment hire to ensure you get a great day’s fishing and don’t accidentally wander onto private land without permission.

take in the History Whenever visiting a new location, it’s important to take the time to understand the history of the region. For Central otago, the gold-mining era is deep in its history. To experience this side of Central otago, we’d recommend the following locations: Goldfields Mining Centre in Cromwell, Alexandra’s Central Stories Museum & Art gallery, Clyde Historical Museum and Maniototo Early Settlers Museum (ranfurly). the lexus f series cars have always been one of my favourites from the marque. it all started with the introduction of the iS series in 2007; that car was available with a 5-litre V8, the concept of a big engine in a small car has always appealed to me. there have been several V8s across the lexus line-up before and since, although i think it would be fair to say that the 5-litre V8 has been lexus’ best-kept secret given that today the brand has a huge emphasis on hybrid power. that aside, a new generation GS f has landed and, as you can guess, the f represents V8, the same 4969cc unit that has powered the performance arm of the lexus brand. the GS is a lot bigger than the iS mentioned in my introduction, but performance isn’t hindered, the GS f is

a monster regarding power output and performance, and it arrives in a coupe-like sedan body style, which oozes desire and practicality. landing here at $174,900, the GS f also comes loaded with goodies, and much of that is sight unseen. it has all of the latest technical components, which combine for safety and performance. it is a complicated car designed for high-speed motoring, but it also has the manners that promote casual driving for city speeds. however, it is mostly a car that beckons for the open roads, and there are driverselectable sport-mode protocols that can be tailored to suit any driving style or conditions. in simple mechanical terms, the GS has a longitudinally-mounted engine up front with drive channelled through an eight-speed automatic transmission to the rear wheels.

up front, the engine is rated with a massive 351kW and 530nm of torque. if you take into account that peak power is available at 7100rpm and torque across a wide spread from 4800rpm to 5600rpm, it is not only a powerhouse, but it revs freely to the top end and is strong from all points of the rev band. With the low and close gearbox ratios, there’s never a point where you think acceleration is going to wilt. on that subject, lexus claim a 4.6sec from a standstill to 100km/h time, and by my stopwatch, it will lunge from 80km/h to 120km/h in 3.8sec. these are quick times which easily satisfy, and if you are letting the engine breathe freely it affords a sound that is truly enticing, it wails and thunders, albeit with a little help from the rear audio speakers. of the traction control system. even with huge rear rubber (275/35 x 19in), the grip is challenged, the low profile Michelin tyres are as good as you can get in a sporty car, but under load even they struggle. lexus have always done performance cars well, and the GS has been engineered beautifully underneath. the fully independent front wishbone/ rear multiple link system aids traction along with providing a fabulous, comfortable ride. in standard mode the ride is glorious, and even if you select the sports modes, which firm the suspension, there is little compromise in ride quality. i took the test car on the road i only use for quick cars; the route to lake coleridge Village is a mix of corners which will test any chassis. the GS was in its element in the quick and slow stuff. it has steering to envy, feedback and control is millimetre precise, turn-in is direct, and body balance perfectly even. With the force of the engine out of a corner it is a car that pleases the driver immensely; and, of course, if a corner looms a little too quickly, huge brakes with Brembo calipers quickly slow speed, pedal feel is solid and totally reassuring.

it’s hard to believe that with so much performance on offer the GS f also beholds the lexus concept of luxury, the entire in-cabin area is an experience to be in. not only is there every conceivable convenience item, but that area is laid out so that five people can enjoy the driving experience. as much as i enthused with the engine outputs, it also delivered respectable fuel usage readouts. My five-day average constantly listed around 12.9-litres per 100km/h (22mpg). an instantaneous 8l/100km (35mpg) figure lists at 100km/h with the engine turning over at just 1600rpm. these sit well with lexus’ claim of 11.3l/100km (25mpg) on a combined cycle average. the GS f is also a car you could enjoy as an occasional on-track experience. The first time I was acquainted with the car was on the sealed track at ruapuna’s Mike Pero Motorsport Park. i was a passenger with a professional race driver at the wheel. the GS f responded to the highspeed workout just as if it was built for competition; it is an all-rounder which, in comparison to other desirable sports cars, seems all so affordable.

Balancing The Physical and sPiriTual Anne Hudson speaks with one of Christchurch’s most distinguished sculptors, Llew Summers. Sumner is home to Llew Summers, who has exhibited widely during his career both in solo exhibitions and with other New Zealand greats, such as Tony Fomison, Fatu Feu’u, Graham Bennett. You know that feeling of falling in love with the author of a book you have read? You feel they have an insight into life that strikes a chord with you emotionally. Or it might be a singer/songwriter whose songs resonate with you in an almost physical way. Llew Summers’ sculpture – particularly his figures – has this effect on people. The curvaceous volume and suggestion of a supple tenderness of touch draws you in almost seductively. There is a warmth and harmony; a charming sensuality that makes the viewer reflect that the creator has a thread of creative insight that reaches from a full source. Like the voice of a singer where the sound is developed within the body and is given its emotional colour before it is

produced, a good painter or sculptor must do the same. Summers is quoted as saying: “What’s important to me is to get a balance between the physical and the spiritual in life. We’re given a soul, and we’re given a body. “Sculpture is a nice balance because works can be made which are deep and meaningful, but they require your physical body to produce them. Works must have a soul, rather than being merely clever or smart.” Summers works in several mediums, including ceramic, wood, glass, marble and bronze. Each of these mediums has their demands, and it is to Summers’ credit that he maintains his own distinctive style within these different sources. Some of his smaller wooden and ceramic pieces have been scaled up successfully into large bronze or marble pieces without losing any integrity. Much of his work deals with human relationships and the human condition of

loving, living and being. His figures remind one of the characters from a Bruegel painting; curvaceous, joyous people indulging in the pleasure of being alive. Some more recent work has a spiritual element and religious motifs. Lately, he has looked at the idea and form of angels and wings. Angels are messengers of God and as such carry a great responsibility, which Summers portrays with the mass of their wings. These winged forms evoke the mystery of heavenly beings and remind us of our own mortality. Summers’ sculptures have been installed in every region of New Zealand and also have an international following. Many of his sculptures are situated in public spaces, but are also suitable for domestic sites. He will be a guest artist at Art in a Garden 2016 at Flaxmere, Hawarden, North Canterbury, where it will be exciting to view his work in a garden of this nature.

Caffeine is a diuretic, so it flushes water out of your body. take a large glass of water, try out tip number three, and then see if you still ‘need’ that coffee.

GNOCCHI WITH BROCCOLI, SAGE AND PINE NUTS WHEAT, GLUTEN AND CAN BE DAIRY-FREE Antoinette Savill shares this scrumptious recipe from her new cookbook Deliciously Wheat, Gluten and Dairy Free. Antoinette will be at this year’s Christmas Country Fête in Culverden on October 27th.

Gnocchi is cheap and easy to make and this is the best recipe I have found in the past 20 years. The only planning needed is the time to bake the potatoes. Don’t try to make this recipe with left-over cold potato, it doesn’t work! You can make many other delicious sauces, but always serve the gnocchi piping hot.

INGREDIENTS

METHOD

(SERVES 3)

• 500g ready-made gnocchi, or make your own Gnocchi • 500g medium-sized potatoes, skin on • 100g gluten-free plain white flour blend • Fine sea salt • 1 free-range egg, and 1 egg yolk • extra virgin olive oil Topping and Sauce • 150-200g broccoli florets, trimmed and then cut into similar lengths as the gnocchi • large handful fresh sage leaves • olive oil for drizzling and frying

• zest of 1 unwaxed lemon • 4 Tbsp double goat’s cream, lactose-free cream or soya single cream • 55g hard or semi-soft goat’s/ sheep’s milk cheese/lactosefree semi-hard cheese, coarsely grated or dairyfree grated Parmesan-style cheese • fine sea salt and freshly ground black pepper • 3 Tbsp pine nuts, toasted lightly under the grill • Optional: freshly grated Pecorino or other sheep’s/ goat’s hard cheese or lactose-free semi-hard cheese grated or grated Parmesan-style dairy-free cheese

TO MAKE GNOCCHI 1. First bake the potatoes until soft. 2. While they are still warm, press the flesh through a potato ricer into a mixing bowl. Alternatively, scoop out the potatoes and lightly fluff with a fork. 3. Sift the flour onto the potato with the salt and mix lightly with a fork. 4. Add the egg and the yolk and very gently knead into a ball. 5. Cut the dough into even lengths and roll into long sausages. Cut the dough into 2.5cm cylinders and carefully place on a floured tray. TO PUT THE RECIPE TOGETHER 1. Steam the broccoli until al dente. Keep warm. 2. Bring a large pan of water to the boil and drop in the gnocchi. Cook for 2 minutes or until they float to the surface. Carefully remove the gnocchi, drain and then transfer into a warm and shallow serving dish. Leave for 30 seconds to allow them to steam off. 3. Quickly fry the sage leaves in a little very hot oil and then transfer them onto paper towels. 4. Drizzle the gnocchi with a dash of oil, toss in the lemon zest, cream and grated cheese, sage leaves and season to taste. Scatter with broccoli, sprinkle over the pine nuts and, if you wish, some extra cheese and serve immediately.

Indian Sumner CBD is a welcome addition to the growing number of dining establishments in the central city. The name has long been associated with delicious Indian cuisine in Sumner (both dine in and takeaway), and we’re glad their success out east has led them to open a central-city location. The restaurant is temporarily obscured by roadworks, which, when complete will reveal Manchester Street as a tree-lined boulevard, framing the eastern edge of the city. For now, don’t let the temporary façade deter you; grab a seat by the window and witness Manchester Street undergo its transformation. While the location is important, the

emphasis here is on the food. When we dine, our first impression is made by the delicious smells of spices wafting from the kitchen. The dining area is spacious, and the rhythm of Indian music gives the restaurant a lively atmosphere. The beverage offerings are excellent; a well-stocked fridge and selection of teas including Masala chai (my favourite). Bonus points are awarded for having Kingfisher on tap (my partner’s top drop). Glancing at the menu, you can easily pinpoint all the crowd-pleasers, including butter chicken and tikka masala. However, we opted for the lamb jalfrezi and palak paneer with garlic naan, which were both

truly spectacular. In fact, the rich spices and creamy textures made this some of the most delicious Indian food I have ever tasted. The sauces were thick and bursting with flavour, while the fresh naan rounded off the meal, leaving us extremely satisfied. If you know someone with a particular affinity for Indian food, I recommend taking them to this central-city Mecca. Plus, if you’re feeling a bit guilty from over-indulging, after your meal take a scenic stroll around the transforming city. I predict the new CBD restaurant will be a great success. Its central location, friendly staff and delicious food make it the funkiest little Indian restaurant this side of Sumner.

A FAMILY FAvOURITe Why choose just one dish, when you can have them all? The Garden Restaurant offers an enviable buffet spread. WORDS vanessa oRTynsky PHOTOGRAPHY ChaRlie JaCkson As the seasons change and the winter months are but a memory, we inevitably turn our minds towards the holiday season. With that comes end-of-year celebrations with friends, family and colleagues. Buffet dining is a great way to tuck into a hearty roast dinner without hours of peeling, basting and carving. When investigating a spot for such an event, it pays to have a light lunch, make room for dessert, and be sure to arrive early, when the food is at its freshest. The Garden Restaurant is a popular family spot. When we arrive, there are children, parents, hotel patrons, and a couple of other inquisitive diners like ourselves. The large restaurant is attached to a bar and a hotel, which makes it a convenient stopover for those visiting Christchurch. The hotel has an airport shuttle, which makes it all the more accessible. Under the same management since 1999, Garden Bar Christchurch – or GBC as it’s commonly known – offers free wedding venue hire, with a pleasant spot for a summertime celebration with the lawn outside. The restaurant’s carvery makes it a contender for Christmas functions and corporate events, too. The restaurant has live music on Fridays, elevating the atmosphere.

With options as far as the eye can see, patrons may be unsure how to proceed. Given my experience with buffets, I start light with the salads; quinoa, broccoli and pasta salads to ease into the experience. The ingredients and menu items change regularly, depending on what’s in season. After salads, I opt for some Chinese favourites: wontons, spring rolls, sweet and sour pork, and lemon chicken. There are also hearty staples like macaroni and cheese, French fries, chicken strips and lasagne. What’s the best part about buffets? You can’t leave without trying the dessert. At other restaurants, it’s all too easy to convince oneself not to indulge. You’re either too full, spent too much money, or short on time. At buffets, you have no excuses. The dessert counter teases you at each food-sourcing trip, and, eventually, you’re unable to resist. I can’t go past the soft-serve ice cream, topped with sprinkles. It’s a treat reserved purely for buffets and a decision I’ve yet to regret. It’s easy to see why the Garden Restaurant is a family favourite – with so much variety; there’s something to satisfy even the pickiest of eaters. Bring the whole family and enjoy the endless array of options at your fingertips.

Awaiting invited guests was a dazzling array of good things, crafted to boggle the senses. In one corner an ice tower bedecked with oysters gleamed enticingly, accompanied to perfection by stemmed saucers brimming with champagne. Across the room, a bourbon cocktail station formed another trap along the pleasant gourmet gauntlet celebrators had to run. All the while, entertainers bestowed their talents on the party which dallied on, pleasantly removed from the mundane world above ground. The first night eventually ended, marking the starting point of the incalculable many to follow.

The brief life of Eva Peron played out in the funereal shadow land on stage, redolent of corruption, romance and intrigue, narrated by the slippery Che, whose every other breath whispered of revolution. Thanks to Andrew Lloyd-Webber and Tim Rice, the legend of Evita lives on.

Switching from the verbal fisticuffs in The Beehive, our representatives slugged it out in noble sporting combat on the fields of Christ’s College. Netball and rugby were the sports chosen to test the mettle of both the politicians and their veteran opponents who, after scrubbing muddy knees and applying plasters to skinned parts, prepared to party, somewhat sedately. Refreshments abounded as all got some nourishment onboard before post match muscle seizure and the tingle of liniment claimed them. Combined with the auctions, the tortuous day raised much money for two worthy charities. Hohepa and 0800HUNGRY. They were all worth a vote!

As night fell, the lights were lit at the Air Force Museum to welcome guests to the Rotary Ball. Forming a cavalcade of elegance, which could have shamed any fashion show, the ball-goers entered, to circulate and socialise in the evening’s overture. The stentorian voice of the MC cut through the merriment, calling the party pilgrims to progress to the main event, dinner in the hall of aircraft. There, surrounded by a company of former guardians of the heavens, the fun continued until midnight’s chime rang the curtain down.

nziML’s 70 years in the city ceLebration Three score years and ten in Christchurch is an achievement worthy of crowing about and New Zealand Institute of Management and Leadership (NZIML) found that the perfect place to do so was at the Centre of Contemporary Art (CoCA). Footsteps echoed on the stairs, which led to the celebrations that took place amongst the art adorning the walls and suspended from the ceiling. The conversational hubbub, pierced by the frequent report of corks parting company with bottle muzzles, ceased only for the brief formalities and musical entertainments. Seven decades of leading the way to success, set against the backdrop of artistic fruition as young as today, proved to be a pleasing combination.

How big IS YOuR BuT? Andrea Allen encourages us to stop talking ourselves out of the next big challenge.

At the time of this issue going to print I am hours away from finding out if I have been successful with my bid to stand for the Waimakariri District Council and the respective community board for my ward. Putting yourself forward for any role or position in your community of peers is both an exhilarating and humbling experience. In New Zealand, we often hear the term ‘tall poppy syndrome’ batted around. What does it infer? Quite simply it is the resentment or envy of the success of a peer. New Zealanders as a whole are humble creatures. We enjoy the glimmer of attention or accolades of success, but are equally happy to stay within the crowd rather than leading from the front. Be aware that the tone of your statements or questions to others is completely in your control. Your enthusiasm and energy of a point of view or an opinion is important and should be

acknowledged with the same zeal in which it is delivered. Let’s use an example of how a famous quote could have dramatically dulled in impact with a ‘but’. Eleanor Roosevelt once said: “No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.” She did not say: “No one can make you feel inferior, but you.” This simple change makes a significant impact on the message and its tone. Back to the original question – how big is your but? The next time you are offering your view or opinion, looking to take on a new challenge, or simply making a statement you feel passionate about, rather than offering an out or exit with the use of ‘but’, stay strong and be true to yourself. It’s ironic that people worry about leaving a party early when, in fact, it’s much ruder to overstay. There is a balance and, of course, a set of rules that will make your departure from any social event perfectly timed and full of poise.

For a dinner party, it’s more than acceptable to leave after dessert, but before coffee. Except if you are at a house party and the only commute is up the stairs to your bedroom, then you cannot leave until coffee is drunk. It’s simply the price you pay.

If you are given tea (not coffee), dessert and chocolate all at once, then grab your coat as it’s a signal your host has either a secret lover or an early start and would simply like you to leave. Promptly.

If your host starts doing any chores other than washing up – examples are ironing, emailing, cleaning under the couches – just leave. You will, by this point, have missed many hints.

If you are surprised to see your ex is at the event with a new squeeze no one has bothered to warn you about then you can leave as soon as you arrive. Scoundrels.

If you are drunk enough to slur, fall and say things that will make you cringe in the morning, it’s time to go.

If you are at a wedding, you must stay for the speeches. Even if you know they are about to drain 10 years of your life, you just must.

If it’s a weekday and you’re served dinner after 10pm, you can leave after the main course. You just can.

In 1852, an agricultural show was set up in Hagley Park. It highlighted the horticultural and agricultural abilities of the area and, 11 years later, the first Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association A&P Show followed suit. Step 1 Prime with Redken Pillow Proof, and blowdry hair smooth. Step 2 From the top of the head to the ears, take two sections either side and loosely braid down from the ear, then tie. Victoria Tait speaks with Kelly Coe, founder of Augustine International, to get some key tips on Cup Day class. As one of New Zealand’s most recognised fashion designers, what would be your career highlight? In terms of being a designer, I still clearly remember the moment I first saw a lady out in public wearing one of my designs. It was at the races in Auckland and I literally went up to her and started babbling about how she was wearing my dress – she must of thought I had had too many wines, but that moment sticks in my mind as it was when I realised I was creating garments that made women look fabulous and they were going to choose Augustine for their special occasions. I am a lot more laid back now when I see women in my garments – not so much hyperventilating – but it is still a highlight of my day when I see a lady walking down the street, at a wedding, at school pick-up, wearing my labels. Makes me smile on the inside and never gets old. Where does the inspiration for your spring/summer collection come from? It always begins with the fabrics. I am so inspired by the colours, textures and prints that I select, and I go from there. I will see a beautiful, floaty, floral chiffon and know straight away what sort of garment it needs to be turned into. I also picture women at different occasions in their lives and imagine what kind of style they would want for that occasion. Thinking of what events ladies will have over summer is a great starting point to designing pieces to meet their needs. And colour; summer must always include every colour in the rainbow, starting with pink. What are the top three items we shouldn’t go to the races without? A great headpiece is key. I really don’t like seeing ladies at the races with nothing on their heads – or a fabulous outfit with a tiny little fascinator. You are going to the races, it is your one chance to go crazy; more is more, bigger is better. A dress that is appropriate for race day is important. It must be a good length and not something you would wear to a nightclub. Coordinate your outfit. Your clutch, headpiece, heels, dress, should all work together. That doesn’t mean they all need to be matchymatchy, just create an overall look that works together. And great hair is important. Go to a salon, get a blow wave or a fabulous up-do. A great hair-do completes a fabulous outfit. Do you have any tips for choosing the right accessory for a race-day look? I think you need to remember that the headpiece and clutch are as important as the dress; they are not an afterthought. Choose a dress and then find a clever milliner that can create a headpiece that works in with it. What is your advice for women looking for a race-day outfit? Unless it is derby day, where you have to wear black and white, don’t be afraid to wear colour. It will brighten up your day and look amazing in the race-day sunshine. Go all out! Don’t be afraid or nervous that your outfit is too over the top, or your headpiece is too big, there is no such thing at race day. Go crazy, have fun and, whatever you wear, make sure you complete it with a huge smile. Race days are so much fun, your outfit should reflect your personality and be as fun as the event.
