Established from scratch in December 2009, Ashburton's Lolly Mania is as colorful as its Zimbabwean owner, Howard Mahere, a husband and father of three, now a New Zealand citizen and loving it. The shop's exciting and appetizing wide range of sweet (lollies) treats has become a household name. Plenty of appreciative customers, both locals and visitors to Ashburton, keep returning which is a beautiful thing indeed. 75 per cent of Howard’s selection features New Zealand brands and
old favorites like black balls, aniseed balls, aniseed wheels and much more. Other products which have not disappointed are Italian ice cream, nougat and fudge...yum! With Christmas on the horizon, Howard has, as well as popular silicone spatulas, also introduced amazing art and craft straight out of Africa. Lolly Mania is located next to Countdown East and Wills Street, so on your next visit to Ashburton or just driving through the town, you will discover it is easy to find but hard to resist. Enjoy!

WAIMATE MUSEUM CHARMING HERITAGE The Waimate Museum is a complex of several buildings – seven of which are open to visitors. The main building is the magnificent Courthouse built in 1879. Inside you will find a clock room, military room, telephone display, photographs and much more. The courtroom itself houses temporary displays like the upcoming Underworld exhibition. Visitors enjoy reliving their schooldays in the Douglas School and our younger visitors especially like to experience being locked in a jail cell in the old lock-up. The story of how the people of Waihao lived in pre-European times is told through a video and a display of traditionally built shelters in the
rammed- earth Lilian Marshall building. This building also houses the comprehensive moa display showcasing moa bones found at the local Kapua swamp. The geology display is also in this building and traces the Earth’s history through rocks and examples of fossils from different geological eras. More recent human history can be seen in the tiny Bremner’s cottage from the Bushtown days of the late 1800’s and the horse-drawn vehicles and recreated street of shops in the Pavilion. Waimate Museum is a unique and interesting place to visit. For more information, visit www. waimatemuseumandarchives.org.
Waimate's Wallabies While visiting Waimate, you must visit the town’s famous wallabies at EnkleDooVery Korna Wallaby Park. Visitors can wander at their leisure among 60 tame wallabies, all in their family groups within over 20 enclosures. Special pellets are provided to help you participate in the feeding experience. Gwen, the “Wallaby Lady” has been hand rearing baby wallabies since 1977, but only opened the park to the public in 1999. From October to April, Gwen hand rears baby wallabies brought to her by hunters. This requires much commitment as they need constant warmth and food. But they really
are cute and love to be cuddled by visiting children and adults! There are also other animals to see at the park including bantams, possums and rare breed sheep, as well as an old time Trapper’s Hut. The park is located off Highway 82 on Bathgates Road close to Waimate. Watch out for the Wallaby Park sign and don’t forget your camera. Open daily from 20 September to 10 June from 10am5pm or off season 11 June to 19 September 10am-4pm (weather dependent), by appointment or simply by chance. Phone 03 689 7197 or visit www. waimatedc.govt.nz/tamewallabies.
from Australia, you can see them at the town’s EnkleDooVery Korna Wallaby Park where Gwen, “the Wallaby Lady” has been rearing baby wallabies since 1977. Waimate is also famous for its strawberries, which have been grown in the region since the late 1880’s. At any of the strawberry fields, growers will sell you a punnet of their finest berries, real berry fruit ice cream or pick your own straight from the field. You can’t get much fresher than that! Outstanding forest, mountain and alpine tracks encourage walking or mountain biking with the new bike trails nearing completion. The White Horse Walkway offers a two hour return 3km trail, rewarding the walker with magnificent views, while the
Studholme Bush Walkway comprises five individual walks of 20 minutes or a combination of all five tracks over three hours. Tourism contributes to Waimate's economy with many independent travellers visiting the area to enjoy its attractions and annual events, such as Waimate Rodeo (Saturday 3rd December) , Strawberry Fare (Saturday 10th December) The March Hare Motor Cycle Rally in March and Waimate 50 at Labour Weekend. Waimate also offers an alternative route to Queenstown via the spectacular scenery of the Waitaki Lakes. For further information on Waimate, including maps, brochures etc call into the Waimate Information Centre or view www.waimate.org.nz.

Characterised by wide spacious streets, a valued collection of Edwardian buildings, historic churches, parks and beautiful gardens, Waimate offers a relaxed, friendly environment for both residents and visitors. Specialist shops and cafes and the Vines Restaurant, incorporating Point Bush Vineyard, provide the opportunity to relax or enjoy a little local flavour at the Saturday morning market stocked with local produce.
Travel thirty minutes south of Timaru to discover a valued collection of Edwardian buildings and historic churches, beautiful parks and gardens, an abundance of recreational opportunities including walks and mountain biking, shops, cafes and in season, THE best strawberries. Waimate is also home to NZ’s largest wallabies! For walks, wine and wallabies ... Waimate, turn in at the yellow barn!
The town is the heart of a district blessed with rivers and lakes that offer an extensive range of outdoor pursuits such as world renowned salmon and trout fishing, deer hunting, boating, yachting, bird watching and family camping on the lake shores. Waimate has not forgotten its heritage and those people and animals that helped mould it. The White Horse Monument is a tribute to Clydesdale horses and the stands majestically on the Hunters Hills, visible for miles and accessed via the Waimate walkway or by car. The Waimate district is one of the few places in NZ where wallabies have taken up residence. Introduced

WAIMATE ICONS & LANDMARKS
BUTLER'S BERRIES For decades the Waimate District has been renowned for its strawberries and celebrates the juicy crop with an annual Strawberry Festival at the iconic Butlers Berry Farm and Café. Located just south of Timaru on SH1, a large wagon of huge strawberries is without doubt a “must try” invitation to stop, shop, stay and sample Butlers berries in numerous mouth watering ways. Renowned for their high quality fruit and produce throughout the district and beyond, you’ll find exceptional coffee and delectable food. The licensed cafe serves a berry-inspired menu, fresh fruit ice creams and smoothies to sigh for! Butlers Café is famous for its Devonshire Teas, with “light as air” scones, real cream and your choice of Butlers jams made with more fruit and less sugar. On a commercial scale, Butlers manufacture a variety of jams and chutneys using their own fruit throughout the year. These are available at the Fruit Stall and can also be tasted in the Café. You can purchase punnets of
strawberries as well as raspberries, gooseberries, blackberries and red or blackcurrants. But you can also pick your own in season and take home magic in a mouthful – sweet, firm and colourful, the way berries should be. Butlers Berry Farm and Café is also a superb venue. For family groups, small events and weddings, up to 50 guests can be catered for in the café and marquee space in the grounds, surrounded by strawberry fields. You can also stay in on site accommodation which comprises two two bedroomed cottages (each sleeping four) plus a backpacker lodge which can accommodate 14 people in total. Enjoy a berry splendid Butler breakfast and then explore the history, walks and cycle trails in the local area. Butlers Berry Farm and Café is open seven days and owners Jackie and Donald Butler welcome visitors and guests whether it is a quick visit, a day trip or a longer stay. For further information about accomodation, the cafe or to buy berries online visit www. butlersberries.co.nz.
Heavenly Haven For Vintage Lovers A visit to Vintage Chic is a "must" for lovers of second hand and up-cycled furniture, memorabilia and retro items as well as a wide range of new giftware. The large shop has plenty of room for the up-cycling and restoring of furniture on one side of the shop, while the shop floor on the other side caters for giftware, second hand clothing, linen, jewellery and ornamentals. Because the shop is large there is plenty of room to move around without banging into things and space for pushchairs and
wheelchairs. Janelle Roguski’s collections are sourced through auctions and sales and listening to what the customer is looking for. She likes to find the unusual pieces that she can redo and bring new life to. “I love the older solid wood furniture which was built to last but I also have an affinity for giftware when sourcing all sorts of new items,” says Janelle. Vintage Chic has become a very popular place to visit with people coming to Waimate from all over the district and beyond.

The White Horse Similar to the white horse cut into the chalk hills of Wiltshire in England, Waimate’s white horse was unveiled in 1968 to commemorate the contribution that Clydesdale horses have made to the development of the district. Measuring 60 feet high, 48 feet long and 130 feet above sea level, the landmark is visible for miles around.
Further development over the decades has seen the addition of an aviary, bowling green, glasshouse, playground, sound shell and scout den. Strawberry Farms In the 1880’s the first strawberry farm was planted by Mr Childs, who also opened a shop for the sale of the La Marguerite variety of strawberries. By1898, numerous berry fields had developed and the industry employed 150-200 people to pick, pack and ship the punnets by train to Dunedin, Christchurch and beyond. The iconic taste is still associated with Waimate where berry farms flourish and the Strawberry Festival occurs every December.
Victoria Park Land was set aside for a park as early in Waimate’s history as 1881. Plans included a banked cycling track, oval lawn, ornamental gardens and the planting of English oak trees. The Caledonian Society held its annual games there on Boxing Day and the Athletics Association has held events there since the 1920’s.
Queen Bee Waimate’s Café on Queen is enjoyed by residents and visitors alike. Located in the heart of town, the café is owned by Penny and Paul Sheehy and offers delicious food and baked goods on site. Open daily, Café on Queen operates 9-4pm Monday to Friday and 9-3pmon weekends, so there is plenty of opportunity to sample the menu for breakfast, lunch or dinner as well as tempting coffee and cabinet food throughout the day. This popular-by-word-of-mouth business welcomes all those visiting Waimate to enjoy great coffee, good food and the hospitality the town is famous for.
Norman Kirk New Zealand Prime Minister Norman Kirk was born in Waimate on 6 January 1923. He led the Parliamentary arm of the Labour Party from 1965-1974 and was the fourth Labour Prime Minister from 1972 until his sudden death on 31August 1974. The local high school bears his name as well as the town’s swimming pool, which opened in 1978. Norman Kirk and his wife Ruth are both buried in the Waimate Cemetery.

Te Waimate Settler Michael Studholme is considered to be the “Father of Waimate.” In 1854 he set out from Christchurch in a dray and upon reaching Point Bush, negotiated with local Maori to stay in the area. In 1855 he received the first pastoral license and called the property Te Waimate. His thatched “cuddy” was the first European dwelling and still stands in the garden of Te Waimate.

Every November, Oamaru brings the past to life when its grand Victorian Heritage Celebrations add pageantry and colour to the magnificent old buildings for which it is rightly renowned. The town’s wonderful architecture is a legacy of the 19th century meat and wool boom that, for a brief period, made Oamaru even larger than San Francisco! Now, yesterday’s buildings and today’s Heritage Celebrations from 16th-20th November provide the perfect venue for Oamaru’s “ living history." Each year, the festival focuses on one particular part of our past. This year the theme is Medicine in the Victorian Era and a multitude of

Discover The Waitaki District Endowed with unique geography, glittering Pacific Ocean to the east, majestic snow-capped mountains to the west and vast lakes in between, the Waitaki District is an inspiring place to spend time. The Waitaki District is an easy three hour drive from Christchurch or and one and a half hours from Dunedin. Soak up authentic Victorian Era architecture, the Vanished World Fossil Trail, or enjoy the abundance of wildlife, beautiful beaches and friendly towns. Cruise along the coast and enjoy breath-taking views of the Pacific Ocean and visit pretty towns before stopping at the Moeraki Boulders. These massive stone deposits have gradually been exposed over time as the shoreline has receded and are a unique must-see attraction. Visit the picturesque village of Moeraki or take time to explore any of the coastal walks and secluded beaches between Oamaru and Palmerston. Take a glider up over the stunning Waitaki Valley and soar between the mountains and over lakes. Omarama is home to gliding in the district; whatever your experience level there are options for everyone. Get back to nature and camp
next to wide blue lakes in the Waitaki Valley, fish along the coast, see Yellow Eyed Penguins that come ashore each evening or take a wander through one of the memorial oaks sites planted in 1919 to commemorate those who died fighting in WWI and WWII. See the world’s smallest penguins in their natural habitat at the Oamaru Blue Penguin Colony. From the yearround viewing deck you can watch the pint-sized birds waddle to shore at dusk after spending their days at sea. Revive the beloved road-trip and discover the Waitaki District’s long stretches of coastline, magnificent mountains, vast lakes and stunning farmland. Whichever way you go, you’ll be greeted with stunning views and numerous photo opportunities. Alps2Ocean Cycle Trail is a 301km formed cycle trail taking you from the Southern Alps to the Pacific Ocean. The trail only requires a moderate amount of fitness; it’s mostly downhill, and suitable for all
ages. The Trail and is split up into nine stages and you can do them all, which takes between 4-6 days, or take a day trip and choose your favourite section to ride. Like to eat? The Waitaki District has it covered, from cheese sampling at Whitestone cheese factory in Oamaru to award-winning Riverstone to the north of the district, to Fleur’s Place in Moeraki. Oamaru has a great café culture so you’ll never run out of new places to visit. Bringing the whole family to visit is easy. Riverstone is a great familyfriendly restaurant with awardwinning food and a generous play area. Take a bucket and spade and head down to Friendly Bay at the harbour. Aptly named, there are no massive waves, just clear water lapping at the sandy beach. With the Steampunk playground to the rear, it’s a great sunny spot to relax while the kids are at play. The Waitaki is full of fun events. Heritage Week (16-20 November) celebrates a by-gone era at
Oamaru's Victorian Heritage Celebrations. The Harbour Street Jazz and Blues Festival (17-19 March) is a vibrant and welcoming cultural and music festival experience for locals and visitors alike. The theme, New Orleans Jazz, embraces the flavours, fashion and foot-tapping tunes of the New Orleans Jazz era, with talent quests, workshops, street buskers, pop-up bars and concerts abound. Oamaru’s Fire and Steam (2 June) is a unique family event that coincides with the Steampunk New Zealand Festival. Celebrating fire, steam, sound, light, and music, Harbour Street comes alive with incredible lighting effects, walls of fire, live bands and street performers - an annual event not to be missed. The Premier Steampunk event of the Southern Hemisphere is based in the Steampunk capital, Oamaru, and runs from 1-5 June 2017. Markets, a fashion parade, gala ball and teapot racing are just a few events on offer.

Twinkle, Twinkle Earth & Sky operates their unique Stargazing and Observatory Tours at the University of Canterbury Mt John Observatory and Cowan’s Observatory in Lake Tekapo - in the heart of the Mackenzie Country. The region is famous for its clear and dark night skies. The township of Tekapo sits 750m above sea level and Mt John 1035m. Situated between two mountain ranges, the Southern Alps and the Two Thumb Range, the Mackenzie Basin is protected from most weather systems. The higher altitude gives rise to cooler mountain air making it New Zealand’s leading location for an Observatory and Stargazing. The resident Tekapo population of between 400-500 people contribute to minimizing the impact of light pollution by way of the local Mackenzie District Council’s lighting ordnance’s introduced in the 1980’s,
which enforces all lights to be shaded preventing light emitting upwards into the sky, allowing researchers, locals and visitors an appreciation of our spectacular nightscape for generations to come. The region of the Mackenzie Basin was recognized as the ‘AorakiMackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve’, in June 2012. It was the first to be awarded a Gold Status for its quality of darkness and today remains the largest of all the eleven International Dark Sky Reserves in the world. Lake Tekapo is an awesome location with a truly magical star attraction. Earth & Sky prides itself on offering an award winning premium night time attraction to over 50,000 visitors from around the world. Showing first-hand why Lake Tekapo provides the nation’s best and most out-standing window to our universe.
Call 03 680 6960 now to book your tour or book online at www.earthandsky.co.nz.
WHAT'S ON IN TEKAPO Tekapo is a lakefront jewel tucked into the folds of the Southern Alps. History, Mystery & Activity - Visit the magnificent lakeside Church of the Good Shepherd and the Mackenzie sheepdog memorial. Learn about the mystery of astronomy on a tour of Mt John Observatory or zip and zap on a Segway tour of the township. Gazing, Cruising & Exploring - Go stargazing to view the World Heritage Mackenzie skies at night and be dazzled by what you see with the naked eye. Take a cruise to Motuariki Island, Godley Valley and the hydro intake of Tekapo’s power station. Join a scenic flight to the glaciers or Mt Cook, a 4WD tour to the Tasman Valley or visit the Sir Edmund Hillary Centre at
the Hermitage Hotel close to where he did much of his mountaineering preparation. Wining, Dining & Tasting - Diverse dining in Tekapo ranges from bakery and takeaway convenience to restaurant and café fare. HISTORIC POISE A ‘must visit’ for lovers of arts and culture; Olveston offers a unique glimpse into the extraordinary lives of one of Dunedin prominent Edwardian families. Olveston was the home of businessman, collector and philanthropist David Theomin. Designed by the English architect, Sir Ernest George, Olveston was built with every modern convenience including central heating, a gas generator for electricity, a shower in each bathroom and heated towel rails, an internal telephone system and service lift. The house was also lavishly furnished with exotic artefacts, prized artworks, antiques, carpets, ceramics, statues and weaponry purchased from around the world. Olveston was inherited by the Theomin’s daughter Dorothy in 1933. Continuing the family tradition of philanthropy, Dorothy supported many of the artistic and community causes championed by her parents including Dunedin Public Art Gallery and the Plunket Society. Following Dorothy’s death in 1966,
it was discovered that Olveston, complete with the original contents, was gifted to the people of Dunedin. Visiting Olveston is by guided tour only; guided tours reveal the extraordinary lives of the Theomin family and allow a glimpse of Dunedin’s rich business, artistic and social history from the mid-1800s until the 1960s. Set within a 1-acre ‘Garden of National Significance’, at 42 Royal Terrace, Olveston is within walking distance from the Octagon. Olveston is a time capsule, as little has changed inside the house since it was occupied as a family home. A feast for the eyes, a tour of Olveston is for those who appreciate (or aspire to) the finer things in life. Guided tours commence daily at 9.30am, 10.45am, 12noon, 1.30pm, 2.45pm and 4pm. For details of other activities and events held at the house throughout the year, visit www.olveston.co.nz. Street parking around Olveston is limited, 2-hr visitor parking permits available from reception upon arrival, which can be used on P30 and P90 parking areas.

Toitu Otago Settlers Museum The school holidays are a chance to keep educating the kids and hitting the road and bringing the learning down south adds a level of adventure. Sometimes the kids don’t really know what they want to do in the holidays, whether it’s read, start a craft project or simply look at cool stuff. Toitū Otago Settlers Museum is the perfect place for these sorts of days as children – and adults – can do any or all of these things in the beautifully restored and expanded buildings. The gallery spaces at Toitū have display cases filled with intriguing objects and there are plenty of opportunities to get hands on as well, whether it is trying on a turn of the century dress, climbing on the Roslyn tram or the Tiger Tea bus, playing classic 1980s Atari game Laser Hawk or chilling out and listening to some music. The interactive displays also include soundscapes and digital media that will engage curious minds. The beautiful Art Deco bus station area has a children’s area with craft materials and dress ups – as well as comfortable seats for the adults’ tired legs. The archives and research centre has a wealth of information
for budding genealogists or historians and friendly staff who can help them get started. The Museum has helpfully placed restrooms and a café in the sunny and expansive Josephine Foyer with a variety of snacks and drinks on offer to replenish energy before heading off to explore the next corner of the museum. A shop is also on hand selling toys, games and novelties as well as custom designed jewellery, china and gifts. Toitū Otago Settlers Museum is a fun place to spend an hour or a day with something new always waiting to be discovered.
discovering the recently developed new brew house. This is where the magic happens. Every tour finishes the way every brewery tour should – with the chance to taste and appreciate samples of Speight’s finest beers. In the Brewery bar not only will you learn more about what you are about to sample but we might even let you pour one behind the bar for yourself. After the tour make sure you have time to pop into the Speight’s Brewery shop where there genuine Speight’s gear is available for you and if you are a bit peckish at all pop on down to the original Speight’s Ale House situated within the Brewery buildings. They have great southern fare in generous portions and all of the Speight’s range fresh from the tap.

Located in the heart of Dunedin is the only traditional Chinese Scholar’s Garden in the southern hemisphere. The garden takes visitors on a journey through the city’s cultural history, heritage and tradition – giving recognition to the Chinese people who first came to Otago during the 1860s gold rush and stayed to establish some of Dunedin’s businesses. As a Garden of National Significance it has a distinct character being designed and built using authentic Chinese materials and crafted by a team of artisans form Dunedin’s sister city of Shanghai. The Garden features
hand-made wooden buildings, tiles, bricks, lattice-work and handfinished granite paving stones. In a scholar’s garden, galleries connect to pavilions with the central building, usually a library or study and in Dunedin’s case the Tea House, dividing the garden into individual scenes or landscapes. Plants, trees, and rocks are all carefully composed into small perfect landscapes mimicking a traditional Chinese landscape painting. It is a tranquil place to bring children in the school holidays and with 16 varieties of tea for sale in the Tea House, parents can take some time out in the Tea House and enjoy traditional Chinese tea and treats.

A tour from the Centre is the only way to get close-up views of these magnificent birds in their world famous breeding colony, so make certain you book ahead. Everyone loves penguins! Discover Korora, Little Blue Penguins, the world’s smallest penguins in their natural habitat on the picturesque Otago Peninsula. See them scurry home to their cliff side burrows at the end of the day. Great viewing is enjoyed when you visit the colony of shy, but noisy, little blue penguins in their own world at Pilots Beach. A purpose built observation platform and boardwalk at the beach provide the most natural way to view the little penguins without disturbing them. Visiting the penguins is a delightful mustdo attraction when in Dunedin, the wildlife capital of New Zealand. Blue Penguins Pukekura is operated as a conservation kaitiakitanga partnership between the Royal Albatross Centre, the Otago Peninsula Trust and the
Pukekura Trust. The increased financial support from visitors to the area has provided the penguin population with the chance to flourish thanks to the increased level of predator control and the construction of nest-boxes required to successfully raise their young free from harm. Penguin numbers have dramatically increased to over 200 breeding pairs thanks to the hard work of all of the stakeholders involved in the Blue Penguins Pukekura project. Tours begin every evening at dusk from the Royal Albatross Centre and last for approximately 75 minutes. There is a souvenir shop and café on site. Reservations are recommended as the tour fills fast. Please visit www.bluepenguins. co.nz for further information.
Happy Hens Happy Hens have become distinctive Dunedin icons since Yvonne Sutherland made her first appealing designs in 1984 and showcased them internationally at Dunedin’s sister city in Japan. Visitors to the studio at Portobello can see the creative process with the hand painting of each hen. Most of the designs represent different breeds of hens, which are stylized to fit the characteristic Happy Hen shape. Happy Hens are the collectables of today and the antiques of tomorrow. For those passionate about these unique hand made which exude their own personalities there is a Happy
Hens Collectors Club. There are many repeat visitors and some families are now third generation collectors. “We even created a special red and black hen following the Christchurch earthquake and many Christchurch residents asked for replacements after their breakages, saying they couldn’t live without their Happy Hens! A variety of Happy Hen products including tableware, kitchen linen and greeting cards are available at the Portobello premises, or alternatively can be purchased online. Larnach Castle is undoubtedly one of New Zealand’s finest historic homes. Not only is it a testament to the wealth of its builder, but to the current owners who have restored and revitalised it for the benefit of visitors from all over the world. William Larnach was a merchant, Baron and politician when he built the castle in 1871 for his wife Eliza. The finest materials were imported to befit the opulent grandeur he envisaged; Italian marble, Venetian glass and tiles

from England. The 3000 square foot ballroom is still used for weddings and balls and the castle boasts the only Georgian hanging staircase in the Southern Hemisphere. Part of the romance and intrigue of the castle today is the tragic history of its owner. Larnach shot himself after a scandal involving his wife and the building was subsequently used as a mental hospital and later to billet troops. Years of neglect finally came
to an end when the Barker family purchased it in 1967 and painstakingly restored and developed it to its present condition. As well as its magnificent Victorian interior, resplendent with architectural details, elaborate fittings and antique furniture, 35 acres of garden have been re-developed by Margaret Barker into “Garden of International Significance” status. The native plant trail is a beautifully illustrated walk through the castle grounds among rare and iconic native plants in rock gardens, a south seas garden and a rain forest. Children also enjoy a special guide to Larnach Castle. The illustrated brochure contains interesting facts about castles, Victorian times, the family’s history and a children’s tour of the grounds. Larnach Castle offers guests three different styles of accommodation; Camp Estate - country house accommodation positioned 500 metres from the front gate of the Castle, offering luxurious decor and total privacy; Larnach Lodge, features colonial style in the grounds of the castle and has 12 bedrooms with private facilities for guests; while Castle Stable Stay is the perfect
choice for budget conscience travellers. All house guests may dine in the elegantly restored castle dining room and enjoy the unparalled atmosphere of New Zealand’s only genuine castle. Superbly located on the Otago Peninsula, Larnach Castle captures the romance and history of the past. Also on the property is a café, petanque pit and a gift shop for castle themed mementoes to take home. 2017 is a year of celebration. On 3rd March 2017, Larnach Castle will celebrate 50 years of ownership by the Barker family with a range of events during the year to highlight the 50th anniversary. Opening on 3rd March, the main event is a yearlong exhibition of the last 50 years of photographs and videos recording the “highs and lows” and the many achievements of this time. Other events include a staff reunion to be held in September 2017. “We will be looking for stories and photos from ex staff and (guests) to put on our web site. We will also be hosting a Garden Debate in October 2017 chaired by Tony Murrell - details to be confirmed” says Deborah Prive, Marketing and PR Manager of Larnach Castle.

Dunedin's Fortune Theatre Long rumored to be one of Dunedin’s most haunted buildings, the Fortune Theatre situated in the heart of the city, has been host to a fair share of supposed paranormal activity in its long history. The site on the corner of Stuart Street and Moray Place is occupied by a stunning Gothicstyle church; established in 1869, the Trinity Methodist church cuts an imposing figure over the Octagon who knows what secrets lie within its storied walls... Home to the Fortune Theatre since 1978, there have been dozens of reports of mysterious shadows in the wings, strange figures backstage and phantom patrons in the audience. This November those phantoms will finally get their moment in the limelight during the

All number of ghosts, vampires, werewolves and even a mummy will be flying across the stage in this madcap comedy, with a whole host of characters brought to life by actors Colin Spicer and Stephen Butterworth. Dunedin's City Sights Dunedin was founded over 150 years ago on the toil of whalers, settlers and gold miners. Many of its early origins remain and the city is recognised as one of the best preserved sites of Victorian and Edwardian architecture in the Southern Hemisphere. Wonderful examples include Olveston House and the casino while Dunedin’s Edwardian Railway Station with its mosaic floors and magnificent stained glass windows is one of the most photographed buildings in the country. It’s also the start of the spectacular Taieri Gorge Railway journey to Middlemarch. Nearby the First Church, built in 1873, overlooks the Octagon, a tree-lined 8 sided centre-piece that forms the hub of the city and is presided over by a statue of Scots poet Robbie Burns. Many local residents have Scottish ancestry and proudly encourage the heritage of Dunedin to flourish with numerous pipe bands, the wearing of the tartan and the development of
the city’s own whisky 45 South. Other local industries have also become visitor attractions including Cadbury’s chocolate factory and the Speights Brewery which both offer regular tours and tastings. The University of Otago founded in 1869 was New Zealand’s first tertiary institution and welcomes students from around the world. Nearby, the Forsyth Barr stadium provides a year-round covered stadium for sporting events and concerts. The arts flourish in Dunedin which has its own Sinfonia Orchestra, professional Fortune Theatre, Otago and Toitu Settler Museums, plus numerous galleries and cultural events. Beyond the beautifully laid out Botanic Gardens, Baldwin St rises impressively almost 200m to claim being the world’s steepest street! Dunedin maybe the smallest of our major cities, but it has character, charm, history, heritage and an impressive variety of attractions and activities around its streets, hills and harbour.
Kingsgate – The Ideal Location Dunedin’s Kingsgate Hotel is right in the heart of the city, providing the ideal location for guests whether they are visiting for business or leisure. River boat to the past Clutha River Cruises will guide and glide you effortlessly into Central Otago’s gold mining past! Their beautifully appointed pontoon cruise boat departs from Alexandra boat ramp and drifts safely downstream as the skipper imparts tales of the area’s goldrush history. Along the way you will view authentic miners’ huts built of local schist stone and surviving gold mining relics. The heritage cruise ventures through the Roxburgh Gorge to perfectly preserved gold mines at the curiously named Doctor’s Point and Butcher’s Pont which date from the 1860’s.
Clutha River Cruises offers a unique opportunity to discover the isolated reaches of the Clutha River and see rare examples of both European and Chinese gold mining methods. Amid the spectacular Central Otago scenery you will also enjoy morning or afternoon tea picnic on the riverbank at Doctor’s Point. The company is the only licensed operator providing fully guided and catered tours on Lake Roxburgh and Lake Dunstan and also operates a jet boat tour and boat transfers to the increasingly popular Roxburgh Gorge Cycle trail. CROMWELL
Cromwell's Majesty The arrival on Cromwell’s back doorstep of a world-class motorsport venue has been one factor accelerating the town’s recent growth spurt. International demand for our fine wines and stone fruit has been another. But it’s not all Pinot and Porsches… Cromwell remains a laidback, friendly place where you’re lucky if you see a single other person on your morning cycle along the lakefront. It’s a sporty town, blessed with a range of facilities superior to most of its much larger neighbours. The service town for the construction of the Clyde Dam, Cromwell took a while to shake off its hydrotown past. Among the bonuses was a fantastic swim centre, boating facilities and about 22ha of urban greenways where the trees, now 26 years old, are large and gracious. Over more recent years the community has rallied to develop a unique bike park, a water hockey turf, and re-vamped golf course.

NOVEMBER 2016
Welcome to The Gate, Cromwell’s Tourist Centre
Cromwell Heritage Precinct One of Central Otago’s best kept secrets, the Cromwell Heritage Precinct is tucked away on the shores of Lake Dunstan, at the confluence of the Kawarau and Clutha arms of the lake. From an idea in the mid eighties the historic village has been developed by volunteers over the years. Some buildings have been re-built from stone from the original buildings while others are a faithful re-creation built to modern building code. It is not only a delightful and free visitor attraction with historical displays and charming buildings, but also a hub for artists and craftspeople. The schist stone cottages and shops are tenanted by a quality-focused arts collective, international-standard printmaker, renowned goldsmith, highly original wire sculptor and a plant expert and maker of herbal creams and perfumes. There is also a charming second-hand book store, unique gift outlets and two great cafes. The historic displays tell the story of the incredible 1860s gold rush when sparsely populated Central Otago was suddenly inundated with thousands of hopeful prospectors. Children love the talking ‘locals’ who tell the yarns, life-size horses and secret alleyways, as well as the ducks, fishing wharf and picnic areas. Named in 2014 as one of New Zealand’s best ‘hidden gems’ by AA Directions Magazine, the precinct is gradually being discovered by overseas visitors, Kiwi families, makers of television commercials and locals. Located on Melmore Terrace, the Precinct hosts the Cromwell Farmers Market every Sunday from Labour Weekend to Easter.

An enormous roadside 'Big Fruit' sculpture welcomes visitors to Cromwell, a town mostly drowned when the Clutha River was dammed at Clyde to form Lake Dunstan, now teeming with trout and boating opportunities. In reinventing itself, Cromwell is a holiday town and thriving commercial hub for Central Otago with Wanaka just 40 minutes away and Queenstown under an hour. Surrounded by mountain ranges, Cromwell is the heart of the Central Otago wine industry, a main fruit growing centre, location of one of the South’s best golf links and with Highlands Motorsport Park and Central Motor Speedway, a motor racing mecca. Opening in December on the corner of State Highway 8B (linking State Highways 8 and 6) and Cromwell’s main street, Barry Avenue, ‘The Gate’ will further set Cromwell apart from other Central Otago towns. A large, eye-catching building
complex, The Gate houses three independent hospitality outlets … Five Stags Bar & Restaurant, Forage Information Centre & Café and Harvest Hotel. In the grounds at The Gate, which are landscaped to create a village green feel, is a standalone conference/wedding centre and Super Liquor store. Five Stags has a traditional hunting lodge theme but given a 21st Century twist. Forage Information Centre & Café is an exciting new concept allowing visitors to Central Otago and the Southern Lakes to seek out information and self-book attractions and accommodation in Queenstown and further afield. Cromwell’s only hotel accommodation, Three Star Plus Harvest offers 47 suites available as standard and premium doubles, twins and triples. With French doors opening onto a balcony or paved patio, all suites afford stunning Central Otago views. For further information visit www.thegate.nz , email stay@ thegate.nz or ph 03 445 1777.

Farquharson and Jane (Steve’s sister) and her husband Geoff Bews, they returned from overseas to run the vineyard, having setup the 18 hectare property in 2002. Steve had studied viticulture, wine making and the wine trade at Plumpton College in the UK, and Jane had also studied viticulture there. Nevertheless, owning and developing a vineyard was still a sharp learning curve. The Central Otago location gives a perfect mix of sub regional climates and optimum heat degreedays and the aim was to produce a pinot noir with rich and intense fruit flavours from low yielding vines. During the clearing of the land for planting, they discovered a 100 year old tree commanded a place in local folk lore as “the wooing tree” and a rendezvous for sweethearts and lovers. The tree was retained and the story provided the perfect name for both the vineyard and the owners’ new wine label! Today Wooing Tree sits prominently in the middle of the vineyard, which has become a popular location for marriage proposals and weddings. We offer wine tastings, sales, lunches and platters, all in a relaxed child friendly environment with a sandpit and slide. Functions and weddings are by appointment and the Cellar Door is open 7 days 10am to 5pm.

Wonderful proximity to the lake and mountains also offers adventure activities such as heli bikinig, white water rafting and sledging, parasailing, jet boating, yachting, water skiing, horse treks, quad biking and 4WD safaris. Lake Wanaka is also the gateway to Mt Aspiring National Park where there are
unmatched tramping and climbing opportunities is one of the country’s most unspoiled wilderness areas. Attractions include the intriguing Puzzling World and Great Maze, the Transport and Toy Museum, while at Wanaka Airport you could try tandem sky diving, take a scenic flight, visit the New Zealand Pilot’s Museum and discover the largest collection of World War 2 fighter planes in the Southern Hemisphere. But more leisurely pursuits might entice you to the range of cafes and restaurants in Wanaka, a visit to the historic 1863 Cardrona Hotel, a soul soothing treatment at Sanctuary Day Spa, wine tasting at Rippon Vineyard or an evening movie at the quirky Cinema Paradiso. But whatever fills your days in Wanaka, be sure to enjoy a lakeside barbecue and watch the breathtaking sunset against a backdrop of lake and mountains.
A firm belief in giving customers more “bang for their buck” and encouraging them to truly absorb themselves in the illusionary themeing, the team at Puzzling World have continuously added and improved features between each of their five Illusion Rooms – an area they call “the walls of wonder. Paintings from Alaska and Bali, wall hangings from Peru and prints from some of the world’s leaders in illusionary art from the 19th Century to modern times demonstrate just how universal the popularity of optical illusions are throughout history and across the globe. You’ll discover Canada’s Robert Gonsalves’ works of “magical realism” complementing the “impossible reality” of the Dutch master, M.C Escher. Further along, Ambigrams, a type of illusionary word-art is explored while being watched on by NZ’s first Virtual Assistant – a projected holographic guide to assist customers within the rooms. The provocative paintings of
Andre Martins de Barros, a Spaniard who specializes in creating human form through everyday objects sits comfortably alongside Victorian-era illustrations like ‘Vanity’ which ranks as perhaps the first of its kind to bring optical illusion art into the mainstream. An incredible 3-dimensional knit of Einstein hangs alongside an Amish inspired cuboid design, followed by a more walls of brain-bending images and massive window decals to give an ethereal stained glass feel to the Sculptillusion Gallery. And the latest addition is a fun one - a huge Lenticular image of a transforming Lion – from King of the Pride to Smoking Rasta! As Operations and Marketing Manager Duncan Spear puts it, “While we firmly believe that the Illusion Rooms themselves are spectacular in their own right, the plentiful wall space that separates the rooms have provided us with a “blank canvas” to explore other themes of optical illusions and has been fun to fill!”

A haven of nature with its ancient rain forest and abundant wildlife, towering peaks and outstanding waterfalls create a powerful atmosphere of solitude and serenity. Dusky Sound is the largest of the fiords and discovered by Captain Cook in 1773.
