IT could be a nervous few weeks for Wellington’s Sloan Frost as he anticipates the possibility of winning his first New Zealand Superbike Championship crown. With another unbeaten run, this time at the third round of four in the 2016 national series at Levels Raceway near Timaru, the 34-year-old Suzuki star has further strengthened his grip on the premier title. Frost captured two race wins in the glamour superbike class at Levels Raceway — the weekend reduced from three to two races for each class after a serious crash incident on Saturday — and he now leads the series by 43 points over John Ross of Christchurch, who is locked in a see-saw battle with nine-time former superbike champion Andrew Stroud, of Hamilton. All three are on board virtually identical Suzuki GSX-R1000 machines. “Just a small change in temperature can make such a big difference with regards to tyre choice and it was really just a matter of getting that right,” said Frost.
‘The Ever since it graname’s ced the landscape, Pajero DB brought 10’ ONE of 10 Aston Martin DB10 coupes created especially for the 24th James Bond movie Spectre will go on sale via auction. Aston Martin says this is the only DB10 that will be offered for sale to the public. The DB10 is the first Aston Martin designed specifically for the spy movie franchise. Eight of the 10 cars in existence were modified for filming purposes, with the car going to auction just one of two left in an untouched “show” condition suitable for events, such as the world premiere. In order to guarantee authenticity, the DB10 heading to the auction block has been digitally scanned and passed through the company’s provenance scheme. The vehicle has also been signed by the most recent James Bond, Daniel Craig. All 10 DB10s are hand-made and
feature a carbon-fibre body mounted on a modified version of V8 Vantage S underpinnings. Inside, there’s a handcrafted cabin rich in leather, aluminium and carbon-fibre. Under the bonnet is a 4.7-litre V8 petrol engine driving the rear wheels via a six-speed manual transmission. Top speed is said to be around 305kmh. The DB10 will be go up for auction on February 18 in London alongside other items from Spectre. All proceeds raised from this event will go to Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders). — NZ Herald
“After that it was just a matter of riding my own race, checking my pit board each lap and staying in front. “There are four races to go at the final round (at Hampton Downs on March 5-6) and I’m feeling confident. That’s my strongest track but there are still 100 points up for grabs, so it’s not done and dusted yet. I need to ride smart.” Ross twice finished runner-up to Frost on Sunday and that was enough for him to leapfrog past Stroud, who finished fourth both times on Sunday. Stroud was beaten to the finish line by Whakatane’s Tony Rees in race one on Sunday, while Taupo’s Scott Moir took the third spot in race two. Moir (Suzuki GSXR1000) is fourth in the championship standings, just 17 points behind Stroud. The riders now have more than a month to re-gather their thoughts and re-tune their motorcycles as they prepare for the fourth and final round of the New Zealand Superbike Championships at Hampton Downs, near Meremere, on March 5-6.

Amazing amount of space inside these wee cars! Room for a wee dog!
THE first Riley Tri-Car was made in the UK at Coventry in 1898 and the final car emerged from the factory in 1969. For 70 years Riley produced some cars described by writers as delightful and many other models described as conservative. Financial trouble for the Riley company in 1938 saw Lord Nuffield take over and Riley became part of the Nuffield Group. In 1946 an entirely new Riley car was developed. It was a quite advanced one for the year and included the use of a vinyl-covered steel roof, a trend that the American automotive manufacturers followed. The Riley Elf I have drawn was a follow-on of the Morris Mini, a milestone in automotive history. This car started a new era in car design that virtually all makes that produced small cars imitated. The Mini’s engine, which formed one unit with the transmission, was mounted transversely in the front of the small car and drove the independently-sprung front wheels. These cars were designed Alec Issigonis, later Sir Alec, who had already designed
the popular Morris Minor just after the Second World War. The new Mini was wee but spacious, with seating for four adults in the twodoor car. To give a bit of class to the car, the Riley Elf was developed with an extended luggage boot area and a classic Riley chrome radiator front — even though the actual radiator was situated to the side of the car. The body fittings and dash for the Riley Elf were much more glamorous than the Mini and set in a polished wood dash panel. Leather-covered seats were normal and there was extra soundproofing•Home under of floor the mats. Radios and heaters etc changed the Gisborne AA Agency car but of course also increased the price. A total of 30,912 Riley Elf cars were built between 1961 and 1969 and these classic wee cars are still sought after by classic and vintage car owners, with their twin SU carburettor system and detuned Cooper-modified engines. • Warrant of Fitness • Bulk Buy Discounts They have the normal 12 volt Lucas • Motor Vehicle Registration • Road User Charges electrical system, rack and pinion direct • Change Of Ownership • New Plates steering and most have Lockheed two• Driver Licensing • Home of the Gisborne AA Agency shoe hydraulic drum brakes with later ones Open Monday – Friday 7.30am – 5.00pm modified to front disc brakes. Rough ride to Bluff
Fact shock alert! IT’S an age-old subject of argument and a much-visited topic for hack comedians — who is better at driving, men or women? UK company Admiral Insurance has an answer, based on data from its “Little Box” telematics customers, and it says women are better drivers than men. “Men have an annual average mileage of 7004 (11,272km) — 564 miles more than the women’s average of 6440,” says Admiral. “On average, men spend more time driving than women and, funnily enough, they spend a higher percentage of that time speeding. With men being in the car more often, they also face driving at riskier times and in bad weather.” The study found that drivers who have children are marginally safer behind the wheel than those without, and those who drive a petrol car drive better than those with diesel or a hybrid. The safest drivers most likely drive a Chevrolet (Holden in NZ), Skoda or Volvo,
while the least safe are most likely to drive an Audi, Smart or Daewoo. Safest occupations were found to be lecturer, project manager and, in first place, retirees. At the bottom of the pile were warehouse employees, company directors and call centre handlers. Admiral says the best driver of all would be a woman aged between 46 and 50, with children, living in East Anglia, working as a software engineer and driving a two or three-year-old red Honda automatic. The worst would be a Scottish man, aged 21-25, with no kids, working as a manager and driving a manual white Audi. Admiral’s data confirms a Privilege Insurance survey, which found women to be better drivers than men. In the Privilege study, female drivers outscored males in in-car tests and also when observed anonymously at one of Britain’s busiest junctions — Hyde Park Corner. – Telegraph Group Ltd
UP to 20 entries are invited for the Rotary Club of Half Moon Bay’s second fundraising car rally, which starts at the end of March. The 2016 “Bangers to Bluff ” rally will start in Auckland on March 30 and end 11 days later in Bluff, on April 9. Each car entered in the rally must cost less than $1000, and in the style of television’s Top Gear, points will be awarded for entries costing less than $1000. One of the organisers, Stewart Maclaren, said the idea for the rally arose when members were discussing ways of raising funds. “We were all Top Gear fans and thought of the idea of a rally with a series of challenges,” he said. Among beneficiaries of this year’s event will be Alzheimers New Zealand and the
Hopeworks Foundation. Points will be awarded to competitors who manage to enter cars bought for less than the maximum $1000, for the country of manufacture and for “challenges” during the rally. Maclaren said registration for the rally would cost $500, and participants would be required to find sponsorship of $500. The rally will take a scenic, “lesstravelled” route rather than the main highway south to Bluff. The challenge will be to drive a four-door car, registered and with a WoF, and costing less than $1000, from Auckland via The Catlins and Bluff, to finish in Invercargill. Contestants will then travel to Queenstown to dispose of the vehicles, funds from which will go to charity. Enter the rally at bangerstobluff.co.nz

NEW NEWFORD FORDFOCUS FOCUS The 2015 Porsche 911 GT3 RS. Photo / Supplied
Lied about allocation A PORSCHE dealership in the UK had to pay damages and legal fees to a pensioner after selling a rare 911 GT3 RS 4.0 he had ordered to another buyer. The dealership in Bolton had to pay 67-year-old Kevin Hughes more than £85,000 (NZ$186,000) after they sold the rare sports car to a buyer further down the waiting list. Hughes ordered a Porsche 911 GT3 RS 4.0 from the Porsche Centre Bolton, putting down a £10,000 deposit to secure the car. The model’s production was so limited that only 30 were allocated to the UK, and Mr Hughes was told that he would be “first in the queue” if the dealership was one of those chosen to receive one of the cars. Hughes, the owner of a garage and classic car restoration centre specialising in Porsches, was later told that no cars had been allocated to the dealership and his deposit was refunded. However, one example of the model had been allocated to Porsche Centre Bolton but was sold to a customer further down the waiting list. Hughes found out and took the dealership to court.
Initially, his claim was rejected at the Preston County Court, the judge stating Mr Hughes had made only an “expression of interest” and had suffered no loss. But Hughes took his case to the Court of Appeal, where three senior judges deemed it “as plain as a pikestaff ” that he had had a legally-binding contract with the dealership. They awarded him £35,000 in damages, an estimate of the difference between the price he would have paid for the car and the value of a similar car today. The judges said Hughes had done far more than merely “express an interest” and he should have been considered ahead of the buyer who had ended up with the car. Martin Budworth of King’s Chambers, Hughes’s barrister, said “I’m very pleased that Mr Hughes prevailed in the end. He always felt he was the victim of some shabby treatment and the bringing of the claim caused the dealership to admit an outright lie to him about its allocation.” Pendragon Sabre, the dealership’s parent company, has been ordered to pay Mr Hughes’s legal fees of at least £50,000. – Daily Telegraph

THE GISBORNE HERALD
Unable to use a car jack CAP’s findings correlate with Leasing Options results, which provided evidence for an inability to change a wheel being a generation issue — 76 percent of 18 to 24-year-olds said they didn’t know how to do it. The survey results threw up a number of other surprising figures too, suggesting one in five UK drivers don’t know how to open their car bonnet. At a more granular level, a third of women said they didn’t know how to release the lock on their car hood, along with two in five 25 to 34-year-olds. Alarmingly, one in 10 of those interviewed admitted they would use boiling water to clear their frozen car windows on a winter day, rather than the correct method of using de-icer. There were causes for concern when it comes to safety, with just 19 percent of UK drivers knowing the correct stopping distance when driving at 30mph. Over a third of participants (37 percent) thought the stopping distance when

travelling at 30mph was nine metres, when in fact it’s more than double that — 23 metres. More than half also admitted to not knowing how to adjust the height of the steering wheel in their vehicle. Mike Thompson, brand manager at Leasing Options, said the firm was surprised by the findings and urged those without maintenance knowledge to leave tasks to trained mechanics. ‘‘We want to ensure Brits are safe on the roads when the weather makes driving conditions more risky,’’ he said. ‘‘We were shocked by some of the results and as a nation we need to make time to get to know our cars. ‘‘Carrying out tasks on your vehicle without the correct knowledge can not only put yourself but others on the road in danger. ‘‘We recommend that drivers who are unsure about the correct procedures to follow do not carry out the tasks themselves but seek help from a professional.’’
According to the AA in the UK, the second most common reason people call for breakdown assistance is for tyre problems. David Bruce, of the AA’s mobile tyre fitting service AA Tyres, said: ‘‘Last year, the AA had more than 300,000 call-outs from motorists wanting help changing their tyres — that’s well over 800 a day. ‘‘In many cases, such as being stuck on the hard shoulder of a busy motorway, it is much safer to call your breakdown service. ‘‘Surprisingly, despite the number of tyre-related callouts the AA receives every year, our research reveals that 60 percent of motorists would try to change a wheel if they were in a safe place. However, just a quarter of women would try compared to 78 percent of men.” In many cases, motorists are unsure how to use the temporary sealant kits half of new cars carry instead of a spare.

A STUDY carried out to see what percentage of Britain’s motorists can carry out ‘basic’ maintenance tasks on their cars, found that 55 percent said they did not have a clue what to do with a jack and a locking nut. But a review of the new car market shows that knowing how to change a wheel is becoming less of a necessity, as just 42.5 percent of models now come with a spare as standard. A survey carried out by Leasing Options of 1000 drivers asked if they were savvy enough to carry out simple tasks on their car, from opening the bonnet to checking the oil and brake fluid. Of the all the drivers quizzed from a number of the nation’s major cities, including Birmingham, Cardiff, Leeds, London and Newcastle, just 45 percent said they could replace a wheel on their own. However, with fewer and fewer cars being sold with full-size or smaller space-saver spare wheels, changing a wheel will soon become a redundant skill altogether. CAP Automotive, specialists in car valuations, conducted a review of all the new cars on sale, finding 57.5 percent of all showroom vehicles come with a puncture repair kit in the boot instead of a spare. With the growing popularity of run-flat tyres — those with stiffer side walls that can be driven for short periods when punctured — and carmakers striving to improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions outputs, repair kits have have been favoured by manufacturers over heavier spare wheels as the standard equipment to rectify a flat tyre.

Budget adjustment included DREAD that moment when your car mechanic tells you that you need to fit four new tyres to your car? Imagine the groan of discontent if he then told you a set of new rubber costs almost $60,000. That’s the reality if you’re fortunate enough to afford this outrageous secondhand motor — a one-of-eight Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse that has just gone on sale in the UK. No wonder the current owner wants it gone — some of the running costs are so steep you’re looking at more than half the UK average annual wage just to be insured to drive it. The car in question, on sale at H.R. Owen’s Jack Barclay luxury car dealership in Mayfair, London, is the world’s fastest roadster. The Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse was built in limited numbers, but this World Record Edition model is just one of eight to ever be made. Built to celebrate its record-breaking speed attempt, the orange and black (it’s actually carbon fibre) paint scheme matches that of the very car that achieved a top speed of 254.04mph in April 2013, registering it as the fastest open top car ever. As you can imagine, this 1184bhp 8.0litre W16 powered monster won’t come cheap — the standard Grand Sport Vitesse cost $3.7 million new before options. This ultra-limited model, with 1130 miles on the clock, is for sale now at an eye-watering $4.32 million. But don’t just think it’s the purchase price that’s out of this world; anyone with the funds to buy it will also have to cover the outrageous running costs to actually use it.
For instance, those specially-made PAX Michelin Pilot Sport tyres, the widest tyres fitted to any passenger car in the world, need replacing every 6000 miles at a cost of $14,400 each. Even if petrol prices are at their lowest for six years, keeping this Veyron brimmed is not cheap, and you will need to use the more expensive premium unleaded in this near-$5million hypercar. With a 100-litre tank, that’s $270 each time you fill it at a fuel station. It won’t hold on to it for too long though. Bugatti says when the car is driven flat out at 250mph, it will guzzle it all in 12 minutes. It’s more economical if you’re driving within legal limits, though. Booking the car in for a service isn’t inexpensive either. H.R. Owen told AutoCar last year that an annual service can be as much as $240,000. That incredible fee covers 35 hours of work, which is how long it will take to carry out all the yearly maintenance checks, including five days just to change the alternator. It will also include oil changes, which won’t be cheap, especially as the Veyron uses 42 litres in total, with 18 litres in the engine and the rest in places like the axles and gearbox. Technicians also have to check the 14 single-use titanium chassis bolts that hold together the carbon chassis and rear subframe — if any of these need replacing, they cost $432 each or $6000 for a set. You had better hope that your Veyron doesn’t have an overheating issue — this model doesn’t have one radiator, it has 10. Finally, you’ll have to stump up the average cost of insurance for a Veyron to use

H.R. Owen, originally sold this very Veyron – Daily Mail Grand Sport Vitesse World Record Edition new three years ago — she knows a thing or two about these cars, as she holds the record for the most Veyrons sold in a year, standing at 12. ‘‘It was a pleasure to sell this car to its first owner the first time around. We are delighted that our unique relationship with our clients means that we have the opportunity to help the car find its second owner. ‘‘This is a fantastic example of an iconic car, which has been meticulously cared for in its life so far. It will make a wonderful investment for collectors and enthusiasts alike.’’
