Remembering the
The origin of Christmas and how it loo
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. - Isaiah 9:6
I
t’s safe to ponder that the season that excites us was the same season that brought fears to the lives of Mary and Joseph, who were engulfed with apprehension as they approached the day Jesus Christ was born. In the book of Luke, a decree was sent out by Emperor Caesar Augustus that a census should be carried out in the land to make sure that taxes are rightfully paid to the government. This required families to register in their historical tribal land rather than where they presently lived. So Joseph and his pregnant wife Mary had to travel from Nazareth to Joseph’s homeland in Bethlehem. Imagine how scary the journey could have been for a pregnant woman that took for a couple of days. It was certainly full of uncertainty. It was the time of the great unknown. Bearing the Baby that will bring salvation to mankind, imagine how Mary could have bore the pain and discomfort of giving birth on a manger. The birth of Jesus was not of luxury or convenience. It was uneasy. The inns were full; innkeepers rejected them even in the presence of a pregnant woman who appeared close to the delivery of her child. The visualization of today’s art of nativity depicts a rather sentimentalized image of how Christ was born—when in reality a manger is nothing but a discomfort for a woman to give birth. A manger contains a feeding trough for animals. So not even a slight consideration for hygiene was out there as the baby was about to be born. No cribs, no beds, no pillows or the like. Luke 2:7 accounts the birth of Jesus Christ in a manger as Mary wrapped Him in cloths. The birth scene itself was likely a mix of blood, sweat, agony, and probably the feeling of

unpreparedness and inadequacy for a new parent. Imagine the bitter wailing of a mother giving birth to her Son in such dire situation. And then they were forced to move to Egypt as King Herod ordered the killing of Baby Jesus, feeling threatened of His presence against his power. The book of Matthew accounts that King Herod ordered the death of all boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under. Imagine the emotions of all fathers and mothers wanting to protect their boys from violence and slaughter, especially for no rightful reason. These boys—who were deprived of the chance to grow old and live as we did in our younger years. This is the picture of the first Christmas. Their Christmas was very much not like ours—no posh gifts covered in glossy wrappers to open. No thoughts of entitlement for relaxation. No plans to travel to far, beautiful places for vacation. No peaceful Christmas dinner to enjoy on the table. A study in 2007 reports that Filipinos spend about P63 billion pesos for food and gifts to have a “happy” Christmas. Happy, in this sense relates to “food” and “gifts”. The first Christmas was filled with coldness, hostility, fear, apprehension, and discomfort—all for the birth of the One who brought salvation to mankind and the One who made way for a chance for us to reunite with the Almighty Father. As we exchange presents and feast with meals on Christmas Day, may we be reminded of the reality that while we enjoy buffet tables and the scrumptious food, there are many others who can’t even afford to eat decent meals twice a day. May we be reminded that the celebration is more than just stuffs, it’s about holding on to our loved ones and celebrating each other. May we be reminded that it’s all about making Jesus the center of our celebration. May we be reminded of the first Christmas. TW
