BYKATRINAMARIEFERNANDEZPower. Perseverance. Prayer. One person with multiple personalities— he is indeed the epitome of what it means to be an athlete. An athlete who’s willing to train hard to become better and stronger. Being an athlete has always been an important part of his journey. His achievements in this field have always made him deeply proud.
He was born to conquer the court where shuttle cocks and racquets exist. He is Marl Ayson. A Grade 8 student-athlete from St. Augustine’s Academy of IncorporatedPatnongon (SAAPI). He plays a sport that requires a stable mindset, wise strategies, and full determination. A sport called Badminton.
Badminton is one of the most popular sports in the world, with an estimated 339 million people playing it, according to Above Sports. Badminton has huge popularity in Asia in particular, where seven of the ten most badminton-playing countries are.

practice, as what Marl is doing. He practices continuously to maintain his skills and strength.
“Practice gid ka mayad kag di gid mag absent kung oras ka practice. Ang motto gid daad nga sundon is try and try until you succeed”, said Marl.
The Antique Provincial Athletic Association Meet (APAAM) is one of the most anticipated events in the province. This is the event where every athlete unleashes their potential to showcase their talents in different fields of sports. This is the event where Marl emerged as a champion.
He’d been through ups and downs before he wore that gold medal. Suffering from knee pains, minor injuries, and some negative criticisms coming from those who don’t believe in his capability. However, he was able to secure that place for the championship game. An exciting championship game where everyone doubts him. Every person who surrounds him has that extinct belief that his opponent will win, based on their observations.
“Before ang game gina expect rn ka tanan nga ang kontra ko madaog since sa pag imawanay namon training kada adlaw na
observe nanda nga mas sagad tana. Pero nag pray man japon ako nga daad madaog ako bisan imposible kag nag sarig lang gid ako sa kaugalingon ko nga kaya ko” Marl explained.
Marl’s series of smashes and drops led him to success. Despite the tension caused by the audience, he was still able to focus on the game. His strategies are way better than those of his opponent. He did show everyone that their extinct belief is not true. He made everyone proud of him and proved to himself that he could do things even though everyone doubted him.
“Badminton is not only about winning. What is important to me is about playing hard, doing my best, and putting up a good show for the spectators” as mentioned by Lin Dan, a professional badminton player and a two-time Olympic champion.
Power. Perseverance. Prayer. Marl admitted that he has the power, but he is not that confident that he will defeat his opponent. His perseverance made him realize that he could do things he thought he couldn’t. Above all, his prayers lead him to success and prove everyone that he is the definition of a champion.
