ARCHITECTURE The overall planning concept is derived by the desire to establish a strong sense of place and intellectual collaboration appropriate for a high-technology office park in a Silicon Valley-type district. Therefore, the pedestrian experience and park-like atmosphere is prioritized over central roadways. Curb cuts at the north, south and west provide convenience for vehicular drop-off and ensure intuitive access to and from parking ramps and building entries. In order to foster a sense of inclusion, all building lobbies face inwards towards the development; the exceptions are the two west 60-meter towers, whose lobbies face north in order to access a peripheral roadway path that leaves the central heart of the campus dedicated for green space and pedestrians. The result is an atmosphere of “buildings in a park”.

With a surprisingly minimal impact on the site, two distinct tower bases grow from the earth and bridge together in shared exterior gardens and combined functions. Continuing skyward, the towers form a momumental silhouette based on tower program. Vertical louvers on the perimeter facade provide solar radiation and focus views outward.

ARCHITECTURE + URBAN PLANNING
At 1,225 ft, this mixed-use tower will become the center of Seattle’s rapidly growing downtown, providing the city’s well-connected core with residential and hospitality elements. This tapering tower’s multiple uses, including retail, office, hotel and residential, make it both flexible and economically viable.
56
Spiraling, day-lit community atria interconnect the office plates at the building’s base, while the tower’s curtain wall and residential units' multiple glass exposures draw the outdoors and spectacular views of the Cascade and Olympic Mountains into this vertical urban community.

The Diego Rivera District is a large scale mixed-use project specifically designed to draw cues from the local environment in order to establish a strong urban connection with the existing fabric. This premiere destination offers world class retail, dining, and cultural institutions for local residents and visitors alike. A central multi-function village plaza engages with the newly enhanced Parque Rufino Tamayo, offering a flexible communal space within a highly active pedestrian realm. The vegetated hillside where the strong vertical striations of mountains meet the land is an intriguing juxtaposition and compelling inspiration for the overall design. Chiseled tectonic peaks in the neighboring landscape influence the massing for each tower as they reach skyward. These bold vertical gestures contrast with the softness of the podium base, which is populated with inviting greenery and flowing public spaces.

SANYA RESORT HOTEL AND VILLAS SANYA, CHINA 70 m tall 16 stories 400 keys / private villas ARCHITECTURE Set against a backdrop of forested mountains, the Sanya Resort Hotel provides 400 keys in 16 stories on a sweeping stretch of white sand beach. Known as ‘China’s Hawaii’, the tropical island of Hainan attracts Chinese and Russian tourists who come to enjoy its long, pristine beaches and clear turquoise waters. Standing at the threshold between these two natural features, the modern and iconic resort reflects its context and responds to the local climate. The overall massing with a long, gradually sloping elevation along a winding footprint echoes the silhouettes of the natural indigenous landscape. Tones and finishes found in both the forest and beach are blended together to further embed the design into the surroundings. The sawtooth façade emulates the movement of waves and creates deep shaded balconies, each of which provides shade from the sun and a protected and private oasis to savor the scenery. Abundant landscaping and gardens wind between and throughout, reinforcing the natural beauty of this lush island paradise.

KINGDOM TOWER JEDDAH, SAUDI ARABIA
290,000 sm mixed-use residential tower 170 storey - will be World’s Tallest Building at 1,001m tall 760 residential condominium units 28,000sm of office space 155 key hotel 340 service apartments MASTERPLANNING ARCHITECTURE INTERIORS NEED TEXT The sleek, streamlined form of the tower can be interpreted as a reference to the folded fronds of young desert plant growth. The way the fronds sprout upward from the ground as a single form, then start separating from each other at the top, is an analogy of new growth fused with technology. While the design is contextual to Saudi Arabia, it also represents an evolution and a refinement of an architectural continuum of skyscraper design. The threepetal footprint is ideal for residential units, and the tapering wings produce an aerodynamic shape that helps reduce structural loading due to wind vortex shedding. The result is an elegant, costefficient and highly constructible design that is at once grounded in built tradition and aggressively forward-looking, taking advantage of new and innovative thinking about technology, building materials, life-cycle considerations and energy conservation. Another unique feature of the design is a sky terrace, roughly 30 meters (98 feet) in diameter, at level 157. The sky terrace will be open to the public and will be considered the world’s highest observatory when opened in 2020.

EXPO 2017 "FUTURE ENERGY" ASTANA, KAZAKHSTAN 25 hectares Expo Center, Mall, Housing, Park, and Theater MASTERPLANNING AS+GG’s design for EXPO-2017 will embrace the Future Energy concept by becoming the first Third Industrial Revolution city, where energy consumed by the Expo community will be provided from renewable sources. Buildings will become generators of power and their energy will be stored using innovative technologies while being distributed by a smart grid. The Expo community will provide infrastructure to encourage and support the use of vehicles that use renewable fuels. Phase 1 or the “Expo Mode,” will see the design and construction of the exposition buildings including the central Kazakhstan Pavilion; Theme, Corporate and International Pavilions; as well as hotel, retail, art and performance spaces. The first phase will also include the design and construction of a series of buildings that will act as a “covered city,” which will include retail, residential and office spaces. Phase 1 will be completed by June 2017 to serve the Expo and its visitors.

ROLANDSBERG HANKING CENTER SHENZHEN, CHINA 320 m tall 127,978 sm 60 stories Office, Retail Podium ARCHITECTURE This office tower employs a variety of methods to help bring nature and community back into the tower. The façade weaves in and out creating opportunities for triple height atriums and exterior vertical green wall elements. Side atriums allow for extra natural light to penetrate into the tower to promote a healthier working environment while creating collaborative meeting spaces. In the center the atrium which spans the tower serves as a visual connection between floors as well as a way to hoist construction material for a later addition to the tower adding in future value.

Throughout the building, large central atria, approximately 20 stories tall, will span from mechanical floor to mechanical floor, creating opportunities for interconnecting stairs and creating a unique space for glass express elevators to pass through.
In addition to the central atria there will be three story community atria on the north and south side of the tower. These will serve as community break out or meeting spaces will lush vegetation.
On the east and west sides of the tower there will be semi-conditioned atria space that directly connects to the outdoors. These serve as buffers to the harsh solar radiation at east and west as well as allow for potential smoking and collaboration areas for tenants.

DUSSELDORF GREEN Q MASTERPLAN DUSSELDORF, GERMANY Phase 1 (414,680 sm) Phase 2 (59,700 sm) Phase 3 (244,900 sm) Office, Retail, Residential, Hospitality, Cultural, and Logistics MASTERPLANNING The “Green Q” masterplan is the intersection of living, working, transportation, and sustainability. Over three phases the masterplan slowly changes an underdeveloped site located in central Dusseldorf into a vibrant mixed use district. Providing ease of regional access, vibrancy of cultural institutions, and proximity to nature. Phase 1 stitches together disconnected parts of the city. Bridging the railway between the office tower and the residential district. The integration of urban plaza spaces helps to bring nature throughout the community providing a link between previously disjointed parts. Phase 2 grows upon phase 1 with the addition of a park extension and two additional residential towers along the park access. Phase three goes further by creating a solar river of PV cells over the upgraded train station proving a renewable source of energy harvesting.

NANJING FINANCIAL CENTER NANJING, CHINA 480 m, 215 m tall 660,267 sm above grade area 547,560 sm office 95,560 sm hotel 6,757 sm retail 10,390 sm conference center ARCHITECTURE Nanjing Financial Town is located at the southern edge of Phase II of the Hexi CBD. The Urban Corridor and Green Valley developed along the Phase II of Hexi CBD expand into a larger 3D public space framed by the Gate Towers and Iconic Tower. The Gate Towers and the 480m Iconic Tower become the exciting final destination along this retail and landscaped public corridor. A protective and energyharvesting shell surrounds the four towers as they organize themselves to frame and anchor the Urban Corridor and Green Valley. For the public space, it provides shelter from direct sun, making outdoor conditions more pleasant; it also channels wind to further improve outdoor comfort. For the private space, it protects its most exposed facades from direct solar radiation, reducing cooling loads and orienting photovoltaic panels to optimize solar harvesting. At the top of the Gate Towers, the shell improves comfort levels on the green roofs and the “Digital Platform.” The Iconic Tower’s form and detail are also the result of the same design process. Its mostly triangular shape responds to the site configuration and its orientation. One of its broad facades is oriented due north and clad with a very simple clear glass, optimizing views of the Urban Corridor, Green Valley and Yangtze River. The two facades oriented mostly west and east take their form from the site and location, and are protected by a wrapping protective wall similar to the Gate Towers.

The Goldenland Suzhou development concept comes from symbolizing the intersection of earth and sky. The larger all glass office tower symbolizes the sky through capturing its reflection while the hotel / residential tower utilizes materials such as stone and metals to embody earthly qualities. The merging of the two distinct towers helps to form the podium with its unique geometric rippled façade. The office tower utilizes a 27 story atrium to unite the interior visually floor to floor. The atrium alleviates large floor plate depths to ensure natural daylight. The office tower façade geometry employs a saw tooth edge which aids in natural shading and energy collection via solar panels.

SHENZHEN TWIN TOWERS SHENZHEN, CHINA 85,080 sm 150 m, 110 m tall 7,767 commercial 82,142 office ARCHITECTURE The twin financial towers derive their form from a unity between CDB and Minsheng divisions. The circular form represents unity between the two and the screen façade merges them both figuratively and sustainably. The slope of the roof between the towers grants both optimal solar protection and forms a PV array that harvest energy for the two towers. Staggered balconies provide space for vegetation to become integrate from the podium to the roof. The bowing ribbon façade is a symbol of world market currency exchange and allows for solar protection and solar harvesting via thin film PV. A central atrium bridge links the two towers with a shared lobby while underneath a common garden provides an urban oasis shield from direct solar heat.

ABRA PAVILION CHICAGO, ILLINOIS 30' height 90' length 60' width concert pavilion Published on eVolo ARCHITECTURE The skin of the Abra is an adaptive response solution for an outdoor music pavilion allowing for optimal sun penetration, natural ventilation, and acoustics. The pavilion serves as a temporary summer installation for music festivals in the city of Chicago. Depending on the pavilion’s location in relation to the sun, certain panels will decrease their opening to allow ambient filtered light, while others maintain a full flexed position for natural ventilation. Thin film photovoltaics are added to the skin to absorb ambient sunlight allowing for omni directional solar gain as they wrap around the shell of the pavilion. The angular projections from the openings reflect the music from the ceiling and walls allowing for the sound waves to reach the ear and become embellished. Due to the lightweight construction, the pavilion is easily movable from location to location which is why it’s adaptation to different orientations is so necessary.
FLEX-Skin

The FLEX-Skin is a variable system which works based off of folded of “flexed” portions to allow certain percentages of light in while collecting energy and enhancing acoustics inside.

THIN FILM PHOTOVOLTAIC Thin film photovoltaic panels are added to the exterior surface of the Sunbrella material as show. This special type of photovoltaic is capable of absorbing ambient sunlight making it ideal for curved or faceted surfaces that do not always face the dominate sun path. Tall Chicago skyscrapers produce enough reflected light on to the Millennium park site to make this a viable energy efficient option. The energy gained can be used to power the pavilion LED lights at night for added ambience .
