mally

mall Talks about His New Line of Cannabis, Mac Dre and More

Bay Area-based Mally Mall began his career in music at a young age. He produced many well known hits including tracks for Snoop Dogg, Chris Brown, Bone Thugs N Harmony, 50 Cent, and many more. Over the years, his two labels, Mally Mall Music and Future Music have taken off. Mally Mall’s longtime friend Mac Dre, also from Mally Mall’s hometown of Vallejo, sadly passed away unexpectedly in 2004. “I’m originally from the Sacramento area but I’m in Vallejo a lot, Mally Mall told The 420 Book in an interview. Lately, Mally Mall has been working in the studio with artists such as Drake, Rick Ross, Meek Mill, 2 Chains and many more. Mally Mall frequently works with Grammy award-winning producer Jason ‘Poo Bear’ Boyd. With a little help from 50 Cent, Mally Mall has also plunged into the film industry with the documentary “2 Turntables and a Microphone, and The Life and Death of Jam Master J.” “Everything I do in life is a way to present my music,” says Mally Mall. Well known for his expertise in connecting different artist, and giving us a timeless sound, Mally Mall is at it again. This time Mally Mall is working with Migos, Rich the Kid, Lil Uzi, and Steve Aoki in a collaboration of where Hip Hop meets EDM. He recently worked with the talented Eva Shaw releasing their track, entitled, “U”. Mally Mall’s new album, “MALLYS WORLD Volume 1” is due to release August 19th with his new single, “Where You At?” featuring French Montana. “MALLYS WORLD Volume 1”will feature A-List artist such as Too Short, Ty Dolla $ign, B Real, E-40, OT Genesis & DJ Paul along with up and coming artist such as Justin Bieber’s new artist Major, Young Egypt, Jazz Lazer, and Jus. Mally Mall, like many others in the Hip Hop industry, has boldly ventured into the business world of marijuana in all of its glorious forms. “I’d never really thought I’d get to the level I’m at now,” Mally Mall admits. “I was always hard on myself. I always felt like I wasn’t doing enough.” Mally Elite™, Mally Mall’s own award-winning strain, has attracted attention lately. His company has vertically expanded to become a branded cannabis line complete with cookies, high quality strains and more.

Mally Elite™ Mally Mall launched Mally Elite March 2016, with the hopes of producing and marketing the best cannabis products available. “I recently opened [Mally Elite] with my partner. I met Mike & Trinity through Nam at the High Times Cannabis Cup in February 2016. I loved their work ethics and the way they brand themselves and the way they stand behind their products. How they support all their patients. We’re actually in it for the patients.” “Choosing to capitalize on cannabis, at this time, was a wise move. “It was Mike’s idea. For me, it was already a lifestyle. I noticed that everyone else didn’t really live the lifestyle; they were just in it for the business. For me, it was an organic lifestyle. I talked to B-Real, and I talked to Wiz, and I talked to everyone else. It really motivated me to move forward.” 28

THE 420 BOOK

Launching a cannabis brand in today’s world, with so many new competitors, is no easy feat. “Surprisingly, after all the hard work, we’ve kind of surpassed everyone else- as far as brand names.” Mally Elite won First Place for Best Product at the 2016 U.S. Cannabis Cup for their entry of Barewoods. Barewoods even beat out Caviar Gold. Mally Elite also won Best Glass for their entry “High Tech” by Mally Elite and CHR. “We won the High Times Cannabis Cup back to back, Mally Mall explains. “Thanks to my partnersit was just a good situation. The quality of the strains is the best. The winner was a hybrid. It’s both Indica and Sativa. People love it, because when people smoke OG, they get too high. I used to smoke Jet Fuel all the time. It was just weed, but because it was so strong, I would get stuck and get nothing done. It’s a hybrid, so it kind of balances you out. You get high, yet you’re still relaxed, but you can move around and do stuff. It’s also real pretty to look at.” We asked Mally Mall if he remembers the first time he got high. “I didn’t start smoking marijuana until I was about 23.” Mally Mall confided. Mally Mall remembers a particular night, many years ago, when he was hot boxing in the car with Mac Dre. “Mac Dre was really big in Chico. Every year for St. Patrick’s Day, we’d go to Sacramento, drive an hour and a half, and we’d just party everywhere. At the time, I smoked Swishers. Mac Dre smoked Backwoods. I was on my way to Sacramento, so I packed blunts using Swishers. While we’re on the road, Mac Dre was upset, saying, “No, I’m not Smokin’ no Swisher!” So I said “C’mon man, we’re already on the road. Let’s not waste time.” He actually pulled over; got out the Backwoods, opened up the blunt I had already rolled, and proceeded to transfer it to the Backwoods blunt. Man, did I get the Mac Dre bitch face. To add to the situation, this guy we met loved my weed. He loved it so much he traded his dog for the weed. It rained that day, so we drove back with a wet dog in the back. I got the Mac Dre bitch face look the whole ride back. It was a nice six month old Rottweiler named Beau. I ended up giving Beau to my girlfriend. She still has Beau. He’s 12 years old now.” Mally Mall says that cannabis, at the right times, can be beneficial in and out of the studio. “It puts you in a more creative state of mind. Marijuana is more of an easy thing for me. I might smoke light when I wake up, but I smoke more towards the evening when I want to enjoy the music more.” Mally Mall is aware of the push for recreational cannabis this November. He’s not concerned, since he operates within the limits of Prop. 215. “We started in 2015. Everything we do is legal. I support legalization because there are a lot of people selling it in the streets. For me, I wanted to do something legit. Everything

we do is licensed. Everything is dispensed through licensed dispensaries. I do my part which is focus on social media and the brand. For instance, this week I had Meek Mill in the studio. I had all these different artists here. They just flip out when I give them the cookies. I like knowing that I’m running business legit. I don’t have time to be watching my back. We chose to do it the right way.” He says that he’s far from finished. “It’s a movement you can build upon.” Mally Mall likes to stay away from the cultivation side of the business. “I like the growers. I just don’t deal with the growers. I’m the face, the brand of the company,” says Mally Mall. “I let them deal with the growers, the distribution and the accounting. I just put my face and name behind it. That’s all I’m concerned with.” Many growers choose strains simply because of the yield potential, and pump them with chemicals to enhance the size and potency. “Mally Elite is actually a brand that we care about the patients the most,” says Mally Mall. “A lot of people try to grow their weed, but they use a lot of chemicals. They don’t know what they’re harvesting. We don’t. We use clean organic products. We spend a lot of money promoting our brand and product. There’s a lot of brand name awareness. During our last two events, we’ve given away over $250,000 in free giveaways. Everywhere I go I give away free Mally Elite gear. We did a lot of collaborations. We did collaboration with California’s Finest. We just keep going, and going, and going. My goal is to make everyone realize that Mally Elite is the brand that has the best products.” Mally Mall’s bottom line message is, “There is a lot of people that support marijuana, and a lot that don’t support it. Prescription medication has been available for a long time now. Prescription medication has a lot more side effects. At times, it is much more harmful than organic medication, like marijuana. If people have a choice to go to a pharmacy, and get Vicodin or Xanax, it should be the same with marijuana.”

Honey of the

month

By Sunceree R.

When you are known all over the world for your beautiful face and curves that rival San Francisco’s Lombard street, it can be difficult maintaining a “normal” lifestyle. Jenna Bentley’s early life consisted of small town living, mastering many genres of dance, playing multiple instruments, and eventually blossoming into a voluptuous 5’, 11” beauty that was discovered while sitting courtside at a Phoenix Suns game. She moved to L.A. and appeared in The Playboy: College Girls Special Edition which led to her popularity as a painted body model, cover girl for Maxim, GQ, Beer Magazine, FHM, Zoo Magazine, and feature model for over 100 websites. Widespread fame, inflammatory internet coverage, over 20 years of dancing and performing with large breasts on a slender body frame, and anxiety from relocating to a city 3 times the population of Montana cause a tremendous amount of stress on Jenna. “The doctor used to give me a prescription for Xanax and I threw that out. Medical marijuana literally saved my life.” She refused prescription medication and began performing. Jenna showcased her talents, becoming a triple threat as a dancer, actor, and singer.

Bigg A

of

Dogg pound records

Show Us the Way When you walk into studios of Dogg Pound Recordsz, where Arnold “Bigg A” White is the Vice President, the ambiance reeks of creativity, and a little something else. “Cannabis is part of the creative culture” says White, and this VP wants to make sure that his artists have access to whatever they need to make game changing music. He even keeps a drum set bong in the studio just in case Snoop comes by to lay down a track. “Many major artists enjoy marijuana recreationally, but the thing that most people don’t realize is that most artists also use for medicinal reasons as well. I myself have arthritis and after years of being prescribed medicine that made me feel groggy and slow, I found that relief in medical marijuana.” His open mind and persistence have made him a pillar in the marketing and distribution sector of the entertainment industry, and although he has worked with countless artists we all know and love, don’t expect this titan to name drop. He is too busy building brands to stand of the success of others. Beyond his work building and developing Dogg Pound Recordz, Bigg A is also the VP of A&R at Serious Pimp Records and the CEO of Bigg A Entertainment, a management group that works to help independent artists and indie labels with branding, digital marketing, and physical distribution. Like all great stories, Bigg A’s begins in Compton California, where he was born and raised along side good friend Eric Wright, a man we all know and love as the musical innovator of hip hop, rapper Easy E. “He’ll always be Eric Right to me” Bigg A laughs when he thinks about their journey together, and how far the two had come, even before Easy E’s Death in 1995. After high school, White joined the United States Army, and after completing his service returned to find that Eric had become a major voice for Compton. Easy E encouraged his friend to quit the daily grind, and to get into the entertainment business, even as White began a new career at a local shipping yard. Fate has a funny way of changing your life abruptly. Just around the time that Eric lost his life, the shipping yard was shut down. While others lost purpose in the devastating shut down, Bigg A decided it was an opportunity. “Eric always said ‘open up a record shop’” says Bigg A, and he took his friend’s advice to heart. Bigg A decided it was time to become his own boss and opened one of the biggest record shops in Compton. The record shop was notorious in Los Angeles for its full wall memorial mural to Easy E, but became a sanctuary where up and comers in the rap game could come by, pay their respects, and maybe even lay down an impromptu track on the microphone set up in the corner. Even Lil Wayne could be found playing video games in the back of the shop when in Compton.

The record shop led to a DJ business which was just the beginning of his journey in the entertainment industry. After years of success in marketing and distribution Bigg A realized that the platforms built to help artist when he was coming up had been removed, making it harder and harder for independent thinkers and artists to build their own brands, and make a living off their art. “I have always put out records, but I put out records for other people. I like to put people in positions to do well and now I make it point to educate artists that I work with who are doing their own thing. Many lack the basic knowledge to control their own careers. When I meet these young artists most don’t know anything about BDS or IRC, or even how to generate a bar code for their product, leaving them vulnerable to big distribution companies. Let me educate you on how to do it yourself.” This mentality has made him a staple in the entertainment industry and even inspired him to create workshops where artists on the come up can gain practical knowledge about the industry. From record labels to clothing branding, it seems like Bigg A has his hands in a little be of everything, and his entrepreneurial pursuits have recently expanded from the entertainment industry into the the up and coming medical marijuana game. Bigg A has recently partnered with Seattle Private Reserve out of Seattle Washington to start DGP Buds. “SPR is one of the biggest manufactures of medical marijuana today” Bigg A told The 420 Book. They are in the for front of the movement, the way that Fillip Morrison was back in the prohibition days.” His work with the well established Seattle Private Reserve has also given him access to information only the major growers in the country currently know about. Many long standing companies in places like Seattle Washington are hopeful that if that if the most populated state in the union (California) decides to fully legalize cannabis, Federal agencies like the DEA will move to strike marijuana from the Schedule I drug list that also currently includes drugs like heroin and cocaine. If and when that happens DGP Buds is posed to be a major player in the green industry. When asked if he would be voting for recreational legalization on the November ballot in California, the answer was a resounding YES! “It’s gonna be big, but from what I understand if you are not already a grower you will not be able to get a license. That is the difference between medical and recreational.” Bigg A has always been an innovator and DGP Buds will most likely have the same innovative trend as all his other endevours. “Something I learned coming up in the hood, is that monkey see, monkey do does not work” says White. “Dont emulate what has already been emulated, created your own lane”. H willie's reserve From Outlaw Country to a Top Shelf near you By Benjamin M. Adams

illie’s Reserve is what Willie Nelson is marketing as his own “premium cannabis lifestyle brand.” Years of trailblazing have led to Nelson’s own branded cannabis. A full product launch this summer led to speculation about the company’s expansion. Willie’s Reserve is available in the recreational markets of Colorado and Washington and will become available in other states as they continue to expand. Nelson wants Willie’s Reserve to be the “Whole Foods Market” of cannabis. Willie Nelson is well aware of the rise of Big Marijuana- the inevitable rise of over-regulation that comes with legalized marijuana. Willie’s Reserve comes in nitrogen-sealed cans provided by N2 Packaging that seal in the freshness, so you always feel like you’re getting fresh bud. Sizes come in eighth or quarter-ounce hermetically-sealed cans or in prerolls in ½ gram or full gram sizes. Products come with a label proudly declaring “Grown by independent farmers.” The product line doesn’t stop there- Willie’s Reserve’s own c02 extracted vape cartridges are available in the universal 510 thread size. Disposable vape pens with chargers are also available. When Dan Rather asked Willie Nelson why he made the decision to attach his name to a marijuana brand, his answer was no surprise. “To prove a point, I think,” Nelson said. “I felt like if you really believe in something, why not promote it?” Nelson, at one time, was smoking up to three packs of cigarettes per day. Nelson’s lung collapsed in 1981, and he eventually switched from tobacco to cannabis. Cannabis eventually replaced whiskey and probably saved his life. For most of his life, Nelson has been an outspoken supporter of cannabis in all of its forms. Nelson partnered up with his longtime friend Michael Bowman to launch Willie’s Reserve. “Willie has spent a lifetime in support of cannabis, both the industrial hemp side and the marijuana side,” Bowman told the Daily Beast in an interview. “He wants it to be something that’s reflective of his passion. Ultimately, it’s his. But it was developed by his family, and their focus on environmental and social issues, and in particular this crazy war on drugs, and trying to be a bright light amongst this trail as we’re trying to extract ourselves from the goo of prohibition.” In 1985, Nelson, along with John Cougar Mellencamp and Neil Young, set up Farm Aid to support small local farmers. Since then, Nelson has had a long, intimate relationship with cannabis and hemp advocacy groups such as NORML. Nelson lives on a self-sustainable farm community in Maui with his neighbors Woody Harrelson and Owen Wilson. Harrelson also has made several attempts to invest in the commercial cannabis industry. Last year, New York-based Tuatara Capital invested in Willie’s Reserve. Business has been expanding vertically and geographically. Willie Nelson hopes to eventually open up storefront locations. The full product rollout is expected over the summer.

Willie’s Reserve benefits the local farmers in the Colorado area. A strict set of standards assure that the farms account for the carbon footprint they leave behind.

Where Some States Stand On

Medical Marijuana

we’ll think about it

YES! t No e r su

NO!

You Bet !

By Rob Starr

In 1996, the Golden State became the USA’s first “Leafy Green” State when it passed Proposition 215 and California cleared the path for medical use of marijuana. Since then, more locations have come onboard so as of last month there were 24 states with Guam and the District of Columbia allowing for medical uses of pot. And the momentum keeps rolling forward. This November, California will take another leap toward complete legalization for recreational use. If the vote goes ahead and wins as planned, the state will join the ranks of the District of Columbia, Alaska, Oregon , Colorado and Washington—U.S. locations that have already legalized and taxed weed for fun as well as medical purposes.

Lawful Weed Still, if you take a step back and look at the big picture, it’s easy to see the steps toward lawful weed is about inching the door open and getting the medical marijuana foot in first. Sadly, liberating your mind and soul starts in the stuffy confines of state legislatures and the very places where passing around a joint or two might grease the wheels of progressive forward thought. No surprise California was the first state to tread down the mellow path to happy days with Proposition 215. There are many things about this groundbreaking moment in history that are noteworthy, but perhaps none more telling than the fact it was passed by 56% of the voters and called the Compassionate Use Act of 1996.

Parka Wearing Puffers The mantle was picked up in 1998 by some advocates that don’t share the same pleasant climate. Measure 8 was brought in by parka wearing puffers in Alaska and a patient registry with ID cards was finally put together. Ballot Measure 2 was a bill that would regulate the production and sale of recreational marijuana in 2014 but hasn’t become fully operational as yet. Maine became one of the other states to jump on the medical marijuana bandwagon early, starting their process off in 1999 with Question 2.

Newton's Law Sadly enough, Newton’s 3rd Law of Motion whereby every action has an equal and opposite reaction is true when it comes to even medical weed. There have been, and still are, some 58

THE 420 BOOK

laggards when it comes to looking at pot with a progressive eye. Some of the names at this end of the list are surprising while others, not so much. You’d think the people in the Big Apple would be leading one of the more progressive charges toward medical cannabis use in general and full legalization specifically. While they do have a law in place that allows for dispensaries, it wasn’t signed until 2014. Illinois and Minnesota didn’t follow suit until that same year. Ohio is one of the states in our republic with the dubious distinction of not even enacting a law until this year. Even now, the serious sounding law, HB 523, has been passed by the legislature, signed by the governor, but isn’t operating at full capacity. Then there’s parts of the country that seem to be waffling on the entire issue when the only place a waffle has is on a plate covered with syrup after a nice smoke. Kentucky has a wellintentioned Clara Madeline Gilliam Act where universities are conducting research trails and Tennessee started a four year study high CBD/low THC marijuana at the university level in 2014. So, you might be wondering where the candidates for what one day might be the highest office in the land stand on the issue of medical pot. We’ll give the last word to The Donald here—not because we find what he says especially profound but more because we can imagine him smiling and staring down into the bag to get that last Dorito as he answers the question. “Marijuana is such a big thing. I think medical should happen—right? Don’t we agree? I think so. And then I really believe we should leave it up to the states. And of course you have Colorado. And I love Colorado and the people are great, but there’s a question as to how it’s all working out there, you know? That’s not going exactly trouble-free. So I really think that we should study Colorado, see what’s happening.” –source Jenna Johnson, “Trump Softens Position on Marijuana Legalization,” www.washingtonpost.com, Oct. 29, 2015
