Darío Escobar / Órbitas imperfectas del 17 de agosto al 30 de septiembre de 2017 The 9.99 Gallery se complace en presentar Darío Escobar / Órbitas imperfectas; muestra que reúne obras de trazos circulares y elípticos que hacen referencia a las trayectorias dibujadas por los planetas alrededor del sol. Al reflexionar sobre las órbitas, Escobar alude a una ruptura de esta elipsis, la cual da paso a formas más dinámicas y complejas en el espacio. El principio de la Ley de la Gravitación Universal habla de la atracción que existe entre las masas de los cuerpos. De la misma manera, el artista nos propone una interacción entre objetos que giran alrededor de una masa superior y compleja, cada día más presente en nuestras vidas: el consumo, si tomamos éste como una metáfora de lo que somos a través de lo que compramos, lo que consumimos y lo que desechamos. La trayectoria imperfecta u órbita del proceso inicia cuando el artista adquiere uno o varios objetos en tiendas comerciales, los lleva a su estudio y elabora, a partir de ellos, una escultura, un dibujo o una instalación. Este acto traza un trayecto, no solamente físico del objeto como tal, sino también un desplazamiento conceptual, porque de esa manera, los objetos pasan de ser una simple mercancía, a convertirse en objetos artísticos. Podemos pensar entonces en un verdadero valor de cambio, donde el valor simbólico se encuentra en un sistema de intercambio de signos y significaciones, donde productos de consumo masivo se transforman en signos y éstos, a su vez, adquieren un sentido más complejo lejos de su utilidad o equivalencia objetiva. Los objetos siempre han sido parte del repertorio del artista. Escobar se ha dedicado a trabajar con objetos comprados de manera específica o al azar. No se interesa en el objeto usado, ni en la memoria que en su trayectoria cotidiana éste pueda haber acumulado. En realidad, es el artista mismo quien desea escribir una historia nueva en el objeto a partir de su adquisición y transformación. Quizá, de este punto parte su interés, en esta ocasión, para investigar más sobre el comportamiento de los objetos, sobre lo que sucede en el proceso previo a la obra final, lo que queda lejos de la vista del espectador: transacciones que revelan la ruta entre la tienda, el taller del artista, y la exhibición pública. 5a ave. 11-16, zona 1, Edificio Passarelli, 2do nivel, Ciudad de Guatemala, Guatemala. Es importante señalar que el artista plantea esta exposición como una exhibición de dibujo, pues las obras que la conforman se comportan básicamente como curvas que se dibujan en un espacio: tres esculturas en madera y aros de básquetbol; trece obras en caoba, madera utilizada en la elaboración de guitarras, con diseños curvilíneos trabajados en distintos colores (rosetas para guitarras de cajón); seis obras de tinta y grafito sobre papel de arroz; y una escultura, de llantas de bicicleta, suspendida del techo. Circularidades todas que proyectan, además, a nivel semiótico y simbólico, el concepto de la órbita, cuya trayectoria marcará el valor de estas piezas, más allá de los objetos. Darío Escobar / Órbitas imperfectas revela el interés del artista en las formas dinámicas y espaciales, y vuelve evidente la atracción que tienen los objetos entre sí y sus operaciones antropológicas y estéticas; pero, más aún, nos muestra otra manera de ver todos estos trayectos a través de un principio universal.

Darío Escobar / Órbitas imperfectas (Darío Escobar / Imperfect Orbits) August 17 to September 30, 2017 The 9.99 Gallery is pleased to present Darío Escobar / Órbitas imperfectas (Darío Escobar / Imperfect Orbits). The show gathers circular and elliptical pieces that refer to the trajectories that planets draw around the sun. When pondering about these orbits, Escobar suggests the breaking of the ellipsis, which then allows a more dynamic and complex form in space. Newton’s Law of Universal Gravitation states the attraction that exists between the masses of the objects. On that same line, the artist proposes an interaction between objects that revolve around a superior and more complex mass, which is present in our everyday lives: consumerism, taken as a metaphor for who we are through what we buy, what we consume, and what we throw away. The imperfect trajectory or orbit of the process starts when the artist obtains one or many objects in convenience stores, which then are taken to his studio, and made a sculpture, a drawing, or an installation. This act, then, creates not only a physical trajectory but also a conceptual path of the objects themselves, which go from being simple objects of consumerism to being art objects. Therefore one can think of a true exchange value, where the symbolic meaning is found in an interchangeable system of symbols and meanings, where mass consumption products are transformed into symbols and at the same time they acquire a more complex meaning, far from their function or their objective equivalence. Objects have always been part of the artist's repertoire. Escobar has been committed to buying objects randomly or specifically. He is not interested in the used object or whatever its past trajectory has accumulated. In fact, it is the artist who wants to give the object a new story, starting with its purchase and ending with its transformation. Maybe this is the starting point of the artist’s interest in delving further into the behavior of the objects, about everything that happens before the final work, that which is so far away from the spectator: those transactions that reveal the trail connecting the store, the artist's studio, and the public exhibition.

It is important to point out that the artist proposes this exhibition to be one of drawing because the works that conform it are basically behaving like curves drawn in a space: three sculptures made out of wood and basketball rings; thirteen works made of mahogany, wood that is used in the fabrication of guitars, with curvy designs produced in different colors (acoustic guitar rosettes); six ink and graphite works on rice paper; and a sculpture made of bicycle tires that hang from the ceiling. The circularity displays the semiotic and symbolic concept of the orbit whose trajectory will impact the value of these pieces, way beyond the objects. DarĂo Escobar / Ă“rbitas imperfectas (DarĂo Escobar / Imperfect Orbits) reveals the interest the artist has in the dynamic and spatial shapes and evidences the attraction that the objects have between one another and their anthropological and aesthetic operations; but, more than that it shows us another way of seeing all these trajectories through a universal principle.
