Get to kno know the Norfolk Academy nomenclature with this handy glossary of Bulldog terms. Batten: The Middle and Upper School library Boy/Girl of the Day: Each day, in every Lower School homeroom, a student is designated as “Boy or Girl of the Day”(or person of the day in grades 5 and 6)! This daily ritual usually includes the Pledge of Allegiance, an inspirational thought or prayer, a recitation of the honor code, and an assigned presentation. Each student is Boy/Girl of the Day multiple times throughout the school year. Bulldog Bookstore: The bookstore is the place to go for everything blue and orange! In addition to apparel, snacks, and drinks, the bookstore sells school supplies and all textbooks needed in grades 7–12. Books and most school supplies are provided to Lower School students. Burroughs: Norfolk Academy’s main gymnasium. PE classes are often held here, as well as Grandparents’ Day, Lower School Closing Ceremony, and Graduation. Chapel: The daily assemblies of the Middle (grades 7–9) and Upper School (grades 10–12). Middle School Chapel meets in Price Auditorium, Upper School in Johnson Theater. Each day a ninth grader and senior present a 7–8 minute persuasive speech to their peers and faculty during chapel. Students choose topics and work with faculty advisors to research, write, and practice their speeches. Lower School Chapel meets monthly in Conrad Gymnasium.

Cooper: The Lower School library EDI (Engineering, Design and Innovation): Students in grades 1–6 attend EDI class twice a week. EDI lessons include hands-on building projects based on real-world engineering problems. Students build structures such as rockets, bridges, and boats. Enrichment at the Academy: Extra-curricular opportunities for Lower School students after school and on the weekends, such as basketball, field hockey, and swim clinics. Field Day: Field Day, established in 1891, is the longest-standing community event at the school. Held on the first Saturday in May, Field Day raises money for need-based financial aid. Grandparents’ Day: The annual musical performance by the Lower School student body that is held on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. Grandparents and special friends are invited to see the show and visit the Lower School. Bulldog and Junior Orange (JO) Teams: Traditional names for our Middle School athletic teams. The Pit: The nickname for the Kennon Forum, located in the center of campus, in front of the new Massey Leadership Center. A community space for students to gather, socialize, and play “pit ball.” Game rules learned by observation… and jumping in the game! Youngkin Refectory: Our lunch room! Lunch is served family style. In the Lower School, fifth and sixth graders serve as waiters for their tables. Royster: The official name of the Middle School. Smith-Hofheimer: The official name of the Lower School. Tunstall: The official name of the Upper School. YPTP: Young People’s Theater Program for grades 4–6. YPTP has fall and spring productions.
