E.· Vincentians Meet May 23 The members of the Society of St. Vincent de' Paul in the Diocese of Fall River extend a cordial welcome to the visiting Vincentians' who are coming to the Fourth Annual Northeastern Regional Conference from the New England States and New York State on May 23, 24, 25. President H. Frank Reilly of the Central Council says that all arrangements have been completed for the three-day meeting.

Dedicate Church To St. Anthony In Fall River Bishop James L. Connolly has announced that he will preside at the dedication of the Diocese's newest church, St. Anthony of Padua in Fall River. The May 20th ceremony -will grace the Bedford Street area with an ultra-modern design replacing the Sixteenth Street church which has been in existence since 1913. Pastor of the new church is me Rev. Laureano C. dos Reis, assisted by Rev. Joseph M. Ferreira. The ceremony will begin at 7:30 in the evening.

St. Joan of Arc School Closes On Cape Cod The parishioners of St. Joan of Arc Parish, Orleans were notified at all the Masses on Sunday that the parish school will close at the end of this scholastic year. Founded in 1953 by the late Rev. James E. Lynch and staffed by the Sisters of Providence, the school opened with three grades and then increased until eight grades were in session. With the shortage of teaching sisters developing , the seventh and eighth grades were closed in September, 1967. Turn to Page Four

New High Charities Appeal Returns Climb Steadily Every Day . And New High Total Is Aroticipafed Catholic Charities Appeal Headquarters in Fall River announced today that the 1969 drive has reached $569,989.11 as of this morning. National and special gift volunteers will complete their remaining contacts this week and parishes are urged to make final returns by Friday noon, May 23, when the books will close. Lay Chairman James H. Smith of Falmouth has stated, "We

are pleased at this figure and we look forward to a dramatic leap upward within the next few days since many parishes which made slow initial returns are coming in with the bulk of their contributions now. I hope that alI parishes will have completed their contacts and returned to those contributors who asked solicitors to call back by the end of this week. Contributions from all priests and parishes should be

made right away to headquarters since books will be closed at noon a week from tomorrow. I believe that there has been need this year of many call-backs and I am grateful to the workers who are doing this so willingly and well and to the people who are so anxious to give. This indicates the truth and necessity of the theme of this year's Appeal-"Each gift makes a difference."

W~naBeing of Catholic Education WASHINGTON (NC) - Catholic diocesan superintendents of education in the United States have called for an action program to assure "the continued well-being of American Catholic education at the present time, including enrollment declines and a growing number of school closings, they said' the continued well being of Catholic schools is essential to both the 'Catholic Church and the nation. Their program of action was outlined in a statement released here by the department of school superintendents of the National Catholic Educational Association, the chief professional organization for Catholic educators. The statement was adopted at the NCEA's 66th annual convention. The association's department of school superintendents numbers about 450 members.

Catholic schools, the statement said, "educate today no less than 5.5 million young Americans at all levels of in· structioI:l.No American cali af· ford to countenance any diminishing of the Catholic school's vital role in maintaining the qual. ity and quantity of our. national education programs." In the Diocese of Fall River, Father Coady has served at St. James Parish, New Bedford; Our Lady of the Assumption, Osterville; St. Peter the Apostle, Provincetown; St. Joan of Are, Orleans; Our Lady of Victory. Osterville; and, Immaculate Conception, Fall River. Father Couza Rev. Donald A. Couza. the son of Charles and Agnes (Flaherty) Couza, was born in New Bedford, on Sept. 23, 1917. After attending Holy Family' Grammar and High Schools, he went on to Providence College. He was ordained a priest by Bishop James E. Cassidy on June 5, 1943 after having prepared for the Priesthood at St. Bernard Seminary, Rochester, N. Y. Father Couza moves next door from Sacred Heart Parish, Oak Bluffs, to found th~ ,newly established St. Elizabeth Parish. He has also served at Sacred Heart Parish, Taunton; Holy Name Parish. (Mullaney) Curry, he was born in New Bedford on October 31, 1908. Father McCarthy The son of the late Timothy J. and the late Mabel (Smith) McCarthy, Rev. James A. McCarthy was born in Taunton on October 21, 1918. After attending St. Mary School, Taunton; Msgr. Coyle High School, Taunton; Holy Cross College, Worcester; St., Michael College, Winooski, Vt.; the University of Ottawa, Canada; he made his final studies for the Priesthood at St. Mary Seminary, Baltimore, Md. Bishop James E. Cassidy ordained him to the Priesthood at St. Mary's Cathedral, Fall River, on Feb. 24, 1945. Pastoral appointments in the Diocese of Fall River have brought him to St. James Parish, New Bedford; Our Lady of the Isle Parish, Nantucket; Holy Family Parish, East Taunton; Holy Name Parish, Fall River; St. William Parish, Fall River; and, St., Dominic Parish, Swansea. Father McCarthy has also served as Diocesan Director of the Deaf, Moderator for the Blackfriars and on the Diocesan Tribunal he has been Advocate, Defender of the Bond and Judge.

WORCESTER (NC) - Holy Cross College faculty members quietly passed five proposals that are something of a milestone in college government. The action was in direct contrast to student protest, rebellion and takeovers other colleges are experiencing. The proposals give students a voice in hiring, firing, promoting and tenuring of faculty, and allow students to attend, speak and vote at all regular and special faculty meetings as well as at meetings of the Educational Policy Committee, which is the major steering' committee of the faculty. , The innovation will giv~ students a 12 per cent voting representation at faculty meetings beginning May 19. In the areas of rank: tenure and reapppointment, student advisory committees will be established for each academic department. The committees will consist of elected junior and senior majors in the particular depart· ment. The student committees will meet with senior faculty members and department chairmen to advise on reappointment. promotion and tenure, and will interview and review candidates being considered for faculty appointments at Holy Cross. All five proposals will be tried for two years and then reviewed by the faculty. Holy Cross faculty also passed a proposal endorsing and recommending coeducation at the presently all-male school. The recommendation will be sent to the school's trustees. Alumni and student opinion will be surveyed and cost estimates reviewed by the trustees. A decision is expected in the Fall. Holy Cross, oldest Catholic college in New England, is celebrating its 125th anniversary this year.

What the Pope Should Do.

A favorite sport of Catholics - and, others - these past several years has been to say often, "What the Pope should do is . .'. ." As Pontiff, which means bridge-builder, he is the link between Christ and the visible Church and reconciles Catholics of varying temperaments in the u~ity of faith and code and sacramental life. , And in the process he is criticized. One wise man, speaking last week after the anouncement from Rome that the universal Church would still venerate but no longer publicly celebrate with feast days, many saints, started a sentence with the traditional words, "What the Pope should do," and then added the phrase, "is hire a good public relations man." It migh~ be a good idea. Sometimes pronouncements from Rome are phrased in such formal and intellectual terms that unthinking reporters try to translate these into jargon that . will reacl~ out and grab the readers. The results at times are disastrous. And the explanations that have to follow up. and correct such initial distor:ted impressions never have the impact of the original misstatement. Maybe a good public relations man would help to state from the very beginning what is said and what" is meant and to answer the immediate questions of reporters in a language that they understand and" that needs no further translation and interpretation. '

Ryan, superintendent of Cincinnati archdiocesan schools for 36 years and dean of American Catholic school administrators, will retire May 31. Pastor. Exploins School Closing NEWARK (NC) - Some 350 students and their parents attending a meeting here in an effort to obtain reverseI of a decision to close St. James High School were told the decision would stand. The decision to close the school, announced in March, was explained by' Father Joseph J. Jarecmczuk, pastor, and Msgr. Joseph P. Tuite, archdiocesan, " superintendent of schools. A total of 194 students are affected by the closing and Father Jarecmczuk said most of them have already transferred either to St. Vincent's Academy, Essex Catholic School or East Side Public High School, all in Newark. Taking note of the numbers in attendance, Father Jarecmczuk said that "If two years ago when we tried to form a parents association this many persons had come out, I might not have to tell you" that the school would not reopen in September. He said that since the closing was announced, the nuns who staff the school have been reassigned for next year. He also said that tuition charges do not even meet payroll costs and that only 33 of the students at the school are from St. James parish. St. James is the only Catholic high school in Newark's Ironbound section.

Sou,rid Doctrine Anglican Theologian Defends Mary's Totle, 'Mother of the Church' DAYTON (NC)-An Anglican scholar, Father Eric L. Mascall, theology professor at the University of London, defended the Blessed Virgin's title, "Mother of the' Church," in 'a talk at Ber, gamo 'Center here. Lecturing under the auspices of the University of Dayton's Marian Library, Father Mascall said the title, proclaimed by Pope Paul VI at the end of the third season of Vatican Council II in 1964,.is sound doctrine and added that he "can't see how anybody can object to it theologically." "There may be a difference of opinion as to whether Pope Paul was tactful,' but it doesn't· seem me that there can be any dispute about the doctrine itself," he said.

Father Mascall's reference was to a debate among council Fathers on the inclusion of the title in a Vatican II document. Although some bishops, including the entire Polish episcopate, asked the council' to proclaim Mary as "Mother of the Church;" the question was bypassed by the Fathers. The Pope then issued the proclamation. Mary,s relation to men depends upon two things-that she is the mother of Christ and that men are members of Christ, Father Mascall said. Total Christ "The Church is· His body; He is the head, we are the members. The total Christ is Jesus and His members," the theologian said.

Father Mascall said Mariology no longer is the divisive factor among many Christians that it once seemed to be. He observed that there is a "remarkable" and growing devotion to Our Lady among those outside the Roman Catholic communion. He indicated that this is partly due to a "more scriptural approach" to Mary by Catholics, "without devaluating her." In efforts to achieve a sound, theological balance in Mariology, "it would be a pity if there' would be a decline in devotion to Our Lady," he said.

Senate of Diocesan Priests Discuss Personnel Boa rd At the May meeting of the Senate of Priests the following topics were subjects of discus·sion. Msgr. John Boyd detailed his committee's recommendations for a Pension and Retirement Plan for the Clergy and Laity of the Diocese. The Senate approved the recommendations of his committee. His report is to be sent to the Bishop within a week for his consideration. The Senate also unanimously passed a resolution establishing a Standing Committee of the Senate, which would conduct an actuarial review of the Plan every year. Fr. John Foister presented to the Senate a six-page draft of recommendations from the Special Senate Commission To Study the Establishment and Functioning of a Diocesan Personnel Board. The following recommendations were passed by the Senate: 1) That the present Personnel Board be dissolved. 2) That a new Personnel Board be formed composed of a total of five members. 3) That these five members be chosen by an at-large election from a list of nominees that has also been obtained from the priests at-large - and that the Bishop designate one of the five Board members as chairman. 4) That prospective or nominated members be first given the opportunity to a.ccept or to decline the nomination before election. 5) That the term of office for the members of the Board be two years. And that there be instituted a rotating system which would be totally operative every two years, but which would begin the following way: three memers would be elected for three years-and two members would be elected for two yearsmembers would be eligible for re-election. 6) That the Board discuss with the Bishop possible changes based upon its studies, examinations, surveys, etc. 7) That the Bishop discuss with the Board changes of priests that he is contemplating. 8) That the Board discuss with the Bishop changes suggested or asked for by individual priests and grievances or local copditions pointed out to it. 9) That a survey by a profes-

sional agency be undertaken throughout the Diocese and if this cannot be done, that it be undertaken by the Board as soon as possible. 10) That the Board meet at least once every three months and/or whenever special occasions arise with the Bishop to discuss matters which will occupy his or their attention. 11) That upon its formation the Board draw up a clear procedural policy in consultation with the Bishop and make this known to all priests. 12) That an individual priest about to be changed or given some assignment be always consulted and advised before any serious consideration is made. Fr. James McCarthy reported . on the status of his committee's study on temporalities in the Diocese. On the Diocesan level he plans to study the possibility of a statement of income and expenditures which might be published periodically and might prove beneficial to the people of the Diocese as a whole. On the parish level his committee plans to study the possibility of having Parish Annual Reports reviewed in detail by auditors and discussed by Parish Councils. A questionnaire on these and allied topics will be sent out to all the priests. Fr. Paul Canuel reported on the plans thus far initiated by the Committee on· Priestly Renewal. He mentioned that Fr. John Thomas, a Jesuit Sociologist from Harvard will conduct two days of Study for the Clergy in late October. His talks and workshops will center on structural and theological changes in the Church and problems in 20th century family living. The Senate was informed that the Clergy of the Diocese will soon be receiving ballots in the mail, so that they can vote their . mind on the Senate's continued membership in the National Federation of Priests' Councils. The President of the NFPC, Fr. Patrick O'Malley from Chicago, spoke to some 60 priests at Connolly High School this past Thursday (May 8). His talk was geared to an overview of the goals and services of the NFPC. The Senate, normally scheduled to close its deliberations in May, voted to have another meeting June 13.

P -Town Leads Cape and Islands Pack Third-place Dartmouth is faced with a must situation this afternoon when it hosts the Regionals in the league's key game. A Dennis-Yarmouth victory will all but mathematically eliminate the Indians who presently trail the front-runner by two games. While the larger Cape schools are engaged in their nip-andtuck race, Cape and Vineyara clubs are trying to resolve their four-team tussle in order to produce a league champion and a worthy opponent for the Conference in first round play of the State elimination compe'tition. At this writing, Provincetown's 2-0 record is the league's best. Nauset Regional and Harwich are in second place with 2-1 marks and Martha's Vineyard next with a I-I record. Although the campaign is still in its early

stage, Sandwich, 1-2 and Chatham, 0-3, appear to be out of the running. Just when New Bedford High appeared ready to completely dominate play in the Class A Bristol County circuit along came its old nemesis, Vocational. Coach Bill Norton's' Trade is supposed to be one of the "breathers" in the senior circuit, but the Artisans have never looked at it quite that way. In the past, New Bedford Vocational never really found itself in contention but always played the role of the spoiler. This season, however, the Green and White is continuing to influence the league standings and, at the same time, is fighting perennial contender Durfee and newcomer New Bedford for championship honors.

Harwich's Ziegler Excels Sporting an unblemished league record last week, Coach John Pacheco's New Bedford High fell victim to' Vocational and then Durfee. With only five contests remaining, the three are battling primarily for league laurels and secondarily for the two berths in the championship tourney. The situation is different but the result the same in the Narry flag chase. Westport, like New Bedford, would like to forget last weekat least, in part. chance for a perfect campaign. Then, on Saturday last, Old Rochester Regional of Mattapoisett upset the pennant hopefuls. A Somerset victory thrust the Raiders . back into undisputed possession of first place. Since the two do not meet again this season, Westport will have to rely on the other league clubs to do what they hoped to do by themselves. On Cape Cod a young lad by the name of Cyd Ziegler is making a name for himself and, at the same time, leading his Harwich track team to a Cape and Vineyard title. This fine young athlete, who performs in three events in each meet does well in all. He runs the 100-yard dash and participates in the broad and high jumps. The latter is his specialty. Last 'week Cyd leaped 6'6 y:!" to set a new league record. Next step the State Meet and more recordshopefully.

Plymouth and Fall River Schol al"ship Winners By Luke Sims

Douglas Scott Griswold and Gerard Romeo Goulet are playing key roles in the current Harvard University athletic program. Griswold, a sophomore from Plymouth, is a member of the Crimson's track team and is listed as a shot putter and hammer heaver. Goulet, a senior from Fall River, is a starboard oarsman on the varsity lightweight crew. Griswold was a three-sport star athlete at Plymouth-Carver High School earning letters in basketball, football and track. The latter was his specialty as Doug won - the Old Colony League and State titles in the shot put during an outstanding senior year. As a freshman on the Charles River campus, Griswold had the second best 35-weight throw on the Yardling squad (49-10y:!) and the third best shot put (47-5%) during the indoor season. Outdoors, a year ago, he had the second best hammer toss (153-4y:!) and shot (47-5%) throws for the freshmen as well as the third best discus throw (137-6y:!). This past Winter his 35-pound toss of 53路91,4 was good for fourth place in the Greater Bostons. Griswold is 6-5 and weighs 235 pounds. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Griswold, 365 Sandwich Street and is the oldest of three Griswold children.

His sister Susan is a high school junior while sister Nancy is an eighth grade student in the Plymouth elementary school system. In addition to the three aforementioned sports, Doug enjoys tennis, water skiing and snow skiing and hopes to go into the teaching profession upon his graduation two years from now. Unlike Griswold, Goulet doesn't boast a high school athletic background. During his Jour years at Prevost High School, Doug stuck to the books, limiting his athletics to CYO baseball in the Summer. How then did he become interested in, of all things, crew? Gerry's explanation is a lengthy one.

"When I got to school (Harvard) I decided I wanted to play some kind of sport as I had been injured during most of my high school years. The only sport which offered a fairly decent chance to people without previous experience was crew and it had a category for my weight class. "The year 1965 ha1t been the year of the famous Harvard crew when Harry Pacher first gained my attention and the publicity given to the sport made it sound pretty good. "I enjoyed the change of pace and the practice throughout the year offered an excellent way of structuring my schedule. In other words, there were very few times when I could say I had nothing to do." During his sophomore and junior years he rowed on the light weight junior varsity crew but las year's competition time was limited due to an injury. Goulet is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Goulet, 1902 South Main Street and is' a member of Blessed Sacrament Parish. He is one of two Goulet children (his younger brother Ronald is a junior at Prevost) and will enter the Naval Supply School in June. After a four-year hitch in service, Gerry plans to return to school to study for a combined law and business degree. Goulet enjoys all sports, and is a coin and stamp collector as well. Both boys received scholarships - Goulet a Naval ROTC Regular scholarship and Griswold, a Harvard regular and club scholarship.
