THE ANCHOR-Diocese of Fall River-Thur: May 16, 197.4

Time To R,e-examine This is the time of year when many p~rsons are receiving their first Holy Communion, when others are receiving the sacrament of Confirmation. It is a time when all Catholics must re-examine what these sacraments should mean in their lives. It is very easy amid the challenges and activities of daily life to take sacred things for granted or to give them merely a perfunctory attention and let them go by.

Christ came to make' an essential difference in the lives of His followers. He gave sacraments that are meant to· effect a higher degree of union with the Father and the Holy Spirit through the Son.' Nothing, of what He has given should ever become routine or be looked upon as a single action with no lasting effects. The innocence of those receiving Holy Communion for the first time should inspire all Catholics to strive for greater innocence in their own lives by receiving the Eucharist more often and with a greater awareness of what is done. The enthusiasm and energy of the young people being confirmed should inspire all who are confirmed to rededicate themselves to their Confirmation vocation,to be witness and preachers of Christ in their world by the knowledge they ltave and, more especially, by the way they liye their lives. This is indeed a time to re-examine lives in the light of these sacraments.

Leg Work To Be Done This is a critical time in the progress of this year's Catholic Charities Appeal. Th~ initial response has been heard from. The first donations have been collected and tabulated. The results are heartening. The spint of charity is most evident in the generosity of those who have responded to the need of their neighbors. Catholics and those of other faiths have been touched by the worth of the Appeal, the asking in the name of the poor and the deprived and the sick and the aged and the exceptional and the troubled.

The firs.t returns have shown that. But the more difficult. work is ahead in these next few days. Return calls must be made. And this is alwayS a wearisome and wearying work. Those who may have been overlooked in the first contacts must now be given the opportunity to reach out to a neighbor in need. This means that someone must care enough to make the contact, to point out the great needs that exist, to ask in ,the' true spirit of charity and expect 'a donation to be made in that same spirit. . , It is now a matter of leg work which must be motivated by the desire to aid those in need and to give: every person this same opportunity. The beneficiaries of the Appeal, after all, are not just those whom the funds from the Appeal help. Beneficiaries are also those who give--because these have heard the call of a neighbor and have responded, these have been touched by the spirit of charity and have acted, these have been conscious of their own stewardship of money and hav.e measured up to what is expected of t~~m.

To bring this about, there is still leg work to be done.

Over 300 institutions are staffed by the sisters and these include schools, hospitals, child care institutions, homes for the aged and catechet· ical centers. From the United States, the congregation branched out to Canada in 1937 and to Brazil in 1950. . The entire congregation, administered from Rome by Mother Mary Virgi'nette Chicboksko, a U. S. citizen, numbers over 4,000 religious women in seven countries. "According to its Constitution, the spirit of the congregation is one of seraphic love of God and neighbor, reconciliation in union with the Immaculate Heart of Mary, in the spirit of atonement and reparation -to God in the Holy Eucharist," explained one of the religious. "This spirit," she went on, "finds expression in the congregation's works of mercy, in the daily exposition of the Blessed Sacrament in all provincial centers, and in various other reparatory practices. "The Congregation of the Sisters of St. Felix," she 'pointed out, "is really 120 years old. In America, it is a century old. "But the Felician Sisters cel· ebrate more than the individual history of an individual congregation. It is the principle of reli· gious life itself, a life lived at the heart of the Church, a life sustained by the vitality of thc Lord Christ." In the Diocese of Fall River, REV. JOHN F. MOORE St. William's Church the Felician Sisters began their parochial school apostolate in , St. Stanislaus ,Parish in 1906. .' as an end and not a begin-

ning. If a child was confirmed it meant for all practioal purposes the end of all classroom religious instruction. This of course became tragically ridiculous as the age for the reception of Confirmation, ~as lowered and lowered even to such levels as fifth and sixth grade. In effect, what this did, despite all the urgings of the teaching church, was to put an end to the religious education of a, large percentage of the CathoHc population. Many of the present problems of our Cath- olic adult population stem from a complete lack of knowledge of the truths, of our faith. That attitude that Confirmation meant the end of "catechism classes" certainly was one of the major contr~butots 'to the situation

To be sure, the void created by such lack of personal committment now has been challenged by the dynamic renewal of the sacrament of Confirmation on the part of the Council Fathers of Vatican II and the official teachings of the Church. In an attempt to meet the ch'allenges of our particular society, Confirmation is now to be considered a beginning, an initiation into the total community. Considering the social and psychological "hang ups" of today's world, it is highly recommended that young people know in fact what is expected of them when t~ey do receive Confirmation and not just, be able to rattle off pious phrases and meaningless words.

P18rsonal Preparation Essential Preparation, then, is a keystone for the reception of this sacrament. Each and every young persOn who receives Confirmation must be prepared to personally accept the teachings of Christ and His Church. This demands of its nature that childr.en should be older in age and mind to grasp concepts, to search souls and to live faith. It would be advantageous to raise the age level of Confkma-

tion to at least sixteen if possible. In this particular area it would be difficult, to go beyond this ag~ level since we still have a large<percentage of high school drop outs at sixteen and beyond. The instruction for this sacrament must be vital and meaningful, aimed not only at the young people themselves but also their parents, many of whom have never been instructed in the truths of faith since

WASHINGTON (NC) - Oblate Father Boniface L. Wittenbrink of Belleville, IlL, was 'awarded the Kiwanis International radio award for his work as executive director of The Talking Book for the Blind and Physically Handi· capped. The award is given ~n recogni-, tion' of .a "first year daily program of significant benefit to th.e nation, a state or locality; and to a community of listeners not previously served in a, station's broadcast area." ~"lllll'I"'IIIIIIIl'I""II"II'III"III""I"trrl"l'l'l'ltlllrrll'II""ll,'rlllll'IIFII""""'lllfll_

their own conf.irmation. In fact a program of parent education is almost a demand in the administration of all the sacraments in today's church. Let'-s face it, children are willing to be active members of the church only in so far as their parents are willing to give them example, guidance and direction. The Church must never cease in its efforts to renew and reo vive the attitude and administra· tion of alI the sacraments, if Catholics are to he real and hon· est followers of Christ. Individually, members of the Church, on their part, must also be sincere and forthright in their personal living of faith. With this attitude, the confirmed Catholic certainly will affect eternity.

Denies Assertion Martial Law Is It, Force WASHINGTON (NC}-Asser· tions that the United States is al· ready under martiai law and that "we are living in' a leaderless tyranny" were chaBenged at a Convocation on Ethics and Politics here as "flights of over· statement" Msgr. J. J. Egan of the Insti· tute for Urban Studies at the University of Notre Dame chal· lenged the assertions made by Ralph Stavins of the Washdng· ton·based Institute for Poldcy Studies in one of the two principal papers delivered at the convocation held at the Carmelites' St. Joseph's Priory. The Wash· ington Theological Consortium, an interfaith organization, and the Institute for Neighborhood St'udies sponsored the convoca-

For Human Rights Nuns in Africa Deplore U.S. Voting Record at United Nations NAIROHI (NC) - The United States has a voting record in the United Nations that shows it is aligned with oppressive white colonialism in Africa, a community of Maryknoll Sisters has charged. In a letter to the U.S. ambas· sador to the United Nations, John Scali, the Sisters appealed to the U.S. government "to take a stand in the United Nations with those .AfJ;ican couhtll"ies still struggling for their independence and huinan rights." .' The Sisters sent their letter on. the occasion of the 14th an-

niversary of the Sharpeville massacre in South Africa. Blaclt Af· ricans there had' been carrying on· campaigns of civil disobedience against the white-ruled South African government. At Sharpevflle, Africans demonstrated to protest a law reo quiring them to carry an identity card at all times. In March 1960, police fired on a group of pro· testers, killing 69 Africans. In a press release accompany· ing their letter to Scali, the Sisters blamed the United States for "supporting the unjust system which breeds Sharpevilles." The Sisters charged that the United States consistently votes with Portugal, South Africa and the United Kingdom against res· olutions favoring African inde· pendence. They questioned why the United States "continualiy votes against African interests and . aspirations." The Sisters said they "are amazed that a nation which preaches democracy and fredom and which fought for its own right to independence should not help to deny these same rights to others." The Maryknoll Sisters who signed the letted work in Tan· za~ia and Kenya as doctors~ nurses, teachers, social workers and' in other specialized fields.

Americans, Stavins contended, "are stopped and frisked several times a day as if the law were merely an extension of a soldier's bayonet. The fact that the 'soldier' wears a mini·skirt, or that the citizen ronsents gladly, does not diminish the reality of martJial law, but rather proves its univeral support and consen· sus." 'Leaderless Tyranny' Stavins cited inspections of persons and baggage at airports, searches ot courtrooms, closedcircuit television .observation of high school corridors, armed es· corts for v,isitors to govemment buildings, passes given to hos· pital visitors, and the use of zoom lenses to observe people at shopping centers as proof that U. S. residents are under martial law. Stavins argued that the sep· aration of powers stipulated in the Constitution has been preserved While f.reedom has been abolished and that these two factors compel the conclusion "that we are livJng in a ·leader· less tyranny." WhHe Msgr. Egan said Stavins was right "in calling our attention to threats to civil liberties, he argued that "the legitimate ?ointing out of serious problems, In many cases, is harmed by flights of overstatement."

Catholic Church Membership Increases WASHINGTON (NC)-A study of membership in most U. S. Christian churches during 1971 shows that the Catholic Church gained 51.4 per cent membership since 1952, reportedly the'largest gain reported by any major church. Churches and Churoh Membership in the U. S., a study conducted by the Glenmary Research Center, the Lutheran 'Church-Missouri Synod and the National Council of Churches (NCC), shows that about half of the Amerian population in 1971 were members' of one of the nation's 187,865 Christian parishes or congregations. Of the church members counted, Catliolics represent about 45 per cent, making the Catholic Church the largest national communion. The Southern Baptist Convention, with over 14 per cent of American Church membership ranked second, and the United Methodist Church (over 11 per cent of U. S. church membership) ranked third. The joint study is believed to be the first breakdown of church membership by denomination, region of the U. S. and counties since a similar study was conducted by the NCC in 1952. The study, however, is only partially complete since it does

Urge Just Wages For Farm Workers SANTA CRIZ (NC) - Bishop Luis Rodriguez of Santa Cruz and Auxiliary Bishop Charles Brown, an Amenican Maryknoll priest, have urged the growers in this rich agricultural area to pay just wages to thousands of migrant cotton workers. The bishops also asked the growers to supply special ser· vices for the cotton pickers' families, and especially for the education of their childrert ' Some 6,000 workers are expected to 'arrive in Santa Cruz from other parts of the country. They usually bring their families with them, creating enormous economic, social and religious problems.

not include membership figures for six major black denomina· tions, non-Christian religions, Orand smaHer thodox sects churches such as the Church of Christ, Scientist and Assemblies of God. . The studY's compilers explained that the omissions were due to inability of such churches to provide accurate membership counts instead of membership

estimates. The repor,t, they stid, counts about 81 per cent of U. S. church members. They added that the member· ship figures were compiled from official church counts and represent what the churches them· selves consider to be their membership. The data, therefore, would be different from the resu(,ts of a door-to-door poll, such as the U. S. census count.

Two new books on marriage cover much the same ground, inevitably, and yet each has features which complement, rather than duplicate, what one finds in the other. The books ar€~ "Marriage:' A Discovery Together" by John G. Quesnell (Fides, Box F, Notre Dame, Ind. 46556. 262 olic weekly, The New World. Alpages. $5), and "28 Experts' most all of the authors are professionals in psychology, psychiView the Sexual Marriage" atry, or psychotherapy. The aredited by Edward P. Sheridan and Kathleen Sheridan (Our Sunday Visitor, Non Plaza, Huntington: Ind. 46750. 192 pages. $2.95).

By IT. REV.

MSGR. JOHN S.·

KENNEDY Mr; Quesnell was formerly director of the family services department of the Minneapolis Catholic Welfare Services, and is now in private practice as a marriage counselor. He maintains that, for a marriage to work, there must be knowledge and acceptance of self by each of the partners. This must precede knowledge and acceptance of the spouse. Each has a special and peculiar history; these histories are not identical or even similar. The partners must learn to adjust to ea,eh other's history,.' each other's language-life style. Commulltication

ticles drew lively response from the paper's readers. . Now the series has been expanded for book publication, and readers' of the book are invited to write to the author's, who say that they are always learning. As does Mr. Quesnell, the collaborators in this case speak of the process of growing together in marriage. Each partner has a life style, and their task. together is to adjust, to settle differences, to communicate successfully. Sensibie points on all these matters are well made. Sexual dIfficulties in marriage are quite as frankly discussed' in this book as in the other.

Who could be Briefly, the genius of American against justice and peace? politics has been pluralism and Having had my share of ex- the genius of American Catholiperienc~ with ritualistic epis- dsm has. also been pluralism. copal committees, I may perhaps be pardoned for being skeptical that anything more than ritual is intended. Some pious statement

American' politics is based upon coalition-building and localismon winning allies for your group from other groups at the grass roots (as Madison made clear in the "Federalist Papers"). In urban politics, the local coalitions are built in the precinct. And the religious side of the nrecinct is the parish. The precinct and the parish together constitute that A.merican Catholic phenomenon, the neighborhood. Re-narkable Commun~ty Theologize about the neighborhood? What can possibly be remarkable ,about the neighborhood? . The. trouble is, having been raised in neighborhoods we take them for granted; we don't realize what an absolutely unique phenomenon they are in modern urban life. So we turn to the French, or the Dutch, or, heaven save us, the Latins to learn about building comm~nity, ignoring the remarkableCOItlmuhity in our midst; . But what can coalitions, pre· cincts, parishes, neighborhoods say about justice and peace? Coalition politics - neighborhood building, if you will - is about binding people together, about harmonizing ,conflicting interests, about devising compromises which everyone can live with. It is, 'in other words, about reconciliation. Which is why I thoiJghtJesus came into the world.

" By

REV. I

ANDREW M. GREELEY

Will doubtless be issued against inJustice and war; pep rallies will be held around the country to inveigh against these twin evils-in the "third world" rhetoric which passes for serious social and economk analysis in Catholic c,ircles today. Without having heen asked for my opinion, I'd like to suggest a more appropria,te present. from the American CathJ)lic Church to the Republic of it!l bicentenary. We might just present the country with self-understanding. 'Liberation Theology' Since the disastrous Americanis.m controversy sh'Jt off original Catholic thinking :n the United States ahriost eight decades ago, American Catholics have taken their intellectual 'leadershiD from abroad-from Italy 'and E~gland before the Second World War, ,and thereafter in rapid succession from France, Germany and Holland. Now, as the ultimate in self-hatred, we are' turning to Latin America for a "liberation theology" which is supposed to be pertinent to our religious problems and needB. Maybe the bishcps 'and their technical experts c,:>uld go back to where we were in 1895 'and ask if there is anything in the American Catholic: experience that we might share with the rest of the country and the rest of the world. Can we reflect upon, if not theologize about, our own experienc,e in such a way as to illumine problems of justice 'and peace? The alternative is to repeat the cliches of the liberal left, or the mindless simpli.cism of the third world crew, or the hollow enthusiasms of our own weary socal actionists, or the pontifical wisdom of the Protestant divines who, at their national meetings, layout 'in an endless series of resolutions answers to all the problems of the human race. Precinct and Parish It is indicative of our problem that whenever I say "reflect on the l11eaning of the American, Catholic exper, ience," people look at me like old weird Greeley has fli;:peq once again. How could there be anything in our experi· ence worth refl, ecting upon? We have come a long way since John Ireland.
