Life's improving by every measure, he says UNITED NATIONS (NC) The U. N. population agency is calling a world conference on the rapid growth of urban populations, which it said could pose 21st century major problems. Rafael M. Salas, executive director of the U.N. Fund for Popula. tion Activities, said action today may spell the difference between a pleasant urban environment and catastrophe, particularly in developing countries. But population expert Julian Simon said that the urban population trend could be a sign of "triumph" for humanity. Pope John Paul II has repeatedly called on the U.N. and other agencies to provide economic aid to families and to promote social justice in dealing with the population issue. By the year 2010, it is projected' that over 50 percent of the world's population will live in urban areas, 20 percent of them in 78 cities of 4 million or more inhabitants, according to a report released by Salas~ agency. .

Fr.equencychange VATICAN CITY (NC) - Vatican Radio's daily English-language program'for North America has moved from 6015 kilohertz to 1630 'kHZ'. The progrilfn is'aired at 8:50 p.m,EDT. It includes news and inf<ihnation abo\.i't 'Churcrh history andcontemporary'church affairs.

In 1950, it said, only New York, London and Shanghai had 10 million or more inhabitants. By the year 2000, 22 such "mega-cities," 18 of them in developing countries, are foreseen. According to the U.N. report, the world's population is increasing by 156 people per minute. It is expected there will be 6.12 billion people by the year 2000. Around 2100, the global population is expected to stabiliz,e at 10.5 billion. Urban populations increase as rural immigrants seek a better life and Third World cities may double in size every 20 years, the report said. . But it also said urban areas in developed countries may expect no or little population growth, resulting in a need for more services for the elderly. While the U.N. report focuses on problems accompanying urban growth, economist and population . expert Julian L. Simon said he prefers to see' the statistics more positively. Simon, who teaches business administration at'the University of Maryland, is author of "The Economics of Population Growth" .and "The Ultimate ResoUl:ce,"both. of which suggest that additi.onal. population leads to improvements in economic well-being. A growing population "can be seen as a burden !lr as a triumph," Simbntold NatiOllal Catholic News Service..

"These figures might be seen as humanity reaching pinnacles of success never reached before," Simon added. Simon calls improving life expectancy rates "an absolutely unparalleled miracle." In only the past 200 years the life expectancy in the West has gone from below 30 years to more than 70, he said, while since World War 11,15 years have been added to the life expectancy of those living in poor coun. tries. "People are living longer and are healthier than ever before," Simon said. He said Western concerns about Third World overpopulation are often "paternalistic," if not "racist,"

He was named ambassador in 1984 after the United States and Holy See established formal diplomatic relations. In March he was identified as the "mystery" official who had made a forbidden trip to Libya to meet with the regime of Moammar Khadafy. The visit came after U. the living word

themoorin~ Liberal Arts on the Move At this year's college graduates seek to begin their careers, they are noting among prospective employers a strong return to the liberal arts. More and more, business is searching for men and women with broad and adaptable rather than narrow and fixed educational foundations. What the market demands, th~ market gets. The need for engineers, computer experts and accountants is still at an alltime high yet it is interesting to note that industry is demanding more than just specialized expertise. A wider vision is wanted to meet the challenges faced by industries, especially those in the international market. As American business continues expanding throughout the world, new job opportunities have surfaced for those with wide general knowledge and flexibility of outlook. Until recently, however, U.S. colleges and universities have not been encouraged by industry to develop and extend their liberal art programs. In fact, for many years the liberal arts _declined as monies and grants received by schools were poured into science and engineering programs. Then came the explosion in the field of computer e4ucation. Revenues were expended to race headlong into this new area, while the poor liberal arts were again shuffled to the back rows of the classroom. To our uniquely utilitarian American mind, supply and- demand determined where schools would spend their monies. . As a result of this pervasive attitude, language courses, history studies and cultural programs were almost sneered at by so-called career counselors. The idea that no one needs such stuff to get a job was more than encouraged by job placement specialists. As one observer put it, American higher education was producing soulless scient.ists and heartless engineers. The study of philosophy, abstract science and literature was for the idle rich, not for young-men and women who saw college as the ticket to a well-paid job. In short, American education began to sell America short as schools produced scientific experts lacking a vision extending beyond their laboratories. . Now in the 80s as the international marketplace widens, attitudes have changed. From the Common Market to OPEC new trading partners are becom~ng more competitive; Japan and its Far East neighbors have unbalanced our budget; Americans on the move have brought with them their hotels and allied services. . In other words, the litany of internationalism is now endless. To cope with a new hotel in Tokyo or a new plant in Italy, Americans have been forced to a new view of business. We have seen by our horrendous deficit that it can no longer be business as usual. We have found out the hard way that people must be met in their language and culture where they are, not where we want them to be. To do this, American business seeks now to hire those who speak languages, understand mores and can interpret social rituals. Reenter the liberal

arts. May we hope that their influence will spread beyond the world of the merely mercantile. The fulfillment of the entire person is indeed the goal toward which all education should strive; and this recrudescence of the liberal arts assures us that the academic. world i.$ once again responsive not only to mar-ketplace needs' but also to the more basic realities of man and interpersonal relationships. . It is indeed refreshing to witness this reordering of priorities. The Editor

Film ratings discussed By Tony Zaza

NEW YORK ( NC) - The Motion Picture Association of America and the National Association ofTheatre Owners have proclaimed that they are getting tougher with films depicting drug use of any kind and those containing harsh sexually derived language. The motion picture group, an industry-appointed trade organization which rates films according to ages, will now at least give a PG-13 and even an R or X to any films which depict drug use or include gratuitous profanity and obscene words. While this appears commendable, it obscures ratings groups' laxity with regard to the increased use of profanity and violence which has reached alarming levels in recent films like "Wise Guys," "Blue City" and "Murphy's Law." The movie industry ratings have simply become an easy way for confused and insecure producers and distributors to target audiences. Rather than acting as a warning, the ratings merely alert viewers to the fact that certain films are selling sex and violence. The rat-

ing has become another marketing strategy. Considering that the X rating has mysteriously disappeared and that the G is on the verge ofextinction, the film industry is in practice segregating films into two classes, for people under and over the magic age of 17. As the industry's self-appointed regulatory body, the MPAA is more an arbiter oftaste than a protector of values. In redefining its policy, the industry's classification and rating administration further obscures .the validity of the PG-13 rating as a warning to parents about explicit content. \ Films appealing to the youth market may become worse than ever because films previously considered for an R rating may be lumped into the PG-13 category. Essential weaknesses of the industry rating system are that it gives no reasons for a rating and that it is concerned only with language and visuals, not the message of a film with regard to social values. Neither condemning nor condoning, the current system merely neg-

lects or evades problems of narrative content, behaving as if all stories have implicit value regardless of treatment. But images produce as well as express meaning. Part of the role of U.S. Catholic Conference reviews is to assess content and to give warnings when necessary to help readers determine the value and suitability of a given film. Unlike most critical agencies or individuals, the USCC is not an arbiter of taste. It is a consensus group responsible for providing those constantly ~ombarded by film, TV and other media with guidelines helping them navigate through often hostile waters. Movies are consumer goods and like any free market product need labels listing contents. Ratings are needed. At their, weakest, they simply describe contents, at their best, they should act like a surgeon general's warning: this product may be harmful to your mental and spiritual health. 6 Vatican disclaims LaRouche tie

VATICAN CITY (NC) - The Vatican has publicly distanced itself fro~ several organizations it said are connected with Lyndon LaRouche, a three-time U.S. presidential candidate from the political fringe. "Organizations and personnel of the Holy See have no part in the activities and in the initiatives connected with Mr. Lyndon LaRouche," said a recent statement in L'Osservatore Romano, the Vatican newspaper. It named the organizations as the European Workers"party, the Club of Life, the Anti-Drug Coalition, the Schiller Institute, the Humanistic Academy, the weekly New Solidarity and the magazine Executive Intelligence Review. The statement did not explain why the clarification was being made and Vatican officials did not elaborate, except to describe it as a preventive measure to avoid misunderstanding. Lyndon LaRouche heads the small National Democratic Policy Committee, which is not connected with the Democratic Party. LaRouche espouses a platform including claims of worldwide conspiracies against himself and humanity involving the Soviets, terrorists, and the British royal family. His supporters have also called for nuclear power plant subsidies.

Participants noted that priests are working more and more in collaborative ministry with lay and religious, married and single women. The convention explored successful models of such ministry and addressed tensions faced by women and men as they move into further apostolic partnership in the Catholic Church. Convention speakers included Evelyn Eaton Whitehead, a developmental psychologist, and her husband, James D. Whitehead, a pastoral theologian and historian of religion. They treated the .

Holocaust recalled in area schools Bishop Connolly High School, Fall River, is among area schools observing Holocaust Remembrance Week, which concludes tomorrow. SponSOred by the Interfaith Council and the Jewish Community Council, both of Fall River, the week highlights the tragic days of World War II when systematic attempts were made to exterminate the Jewish people. Continuing to teach the lesson of the Holocaust beyond the oneweek observance are participating high schools, where specially trained teachers offer a history unit titled Facing History and Ourselves: Holocaust and Human Behavior. The area effort is spearheaded by Louis Sevin, Dr. Irvin'g Fradkin and Atty. Joseph Hanify, .Interfaith Council president. Atty. Hanify notes: "I I million people died in the Holocaust. Six million of them were Jews. Five million were Catholics and Protestants, among them were many priests and nuns . . . . a whole broad spectrum of men and women who were, in every sense of the word, innocent. . "Future generations will be better served if we take steps to preserve a truth which, no matter how horrible it may be, will instruct our children. We must make people so aware of the Holocaust that we will not have to fear that danger \ again."

A Memorial Day statement By Msgr. Paul T. Dotson President, National Catholic Cemetery Conference . The late Eric Hoffer was a California dock worker by vocation but by a avocation he was a wise, self-educated philosopher and writer. In one of his books he writes that the one place in a community that expresses its depth and quality of life is the town memorial monument. Its care and preservation and the proud tradition surrounding it indicate the kind of people we are. But a secuiar consumer society doesn't always put a very high premium on sacrifice or duty or remembrance. Today we hear a great deal about freedom. But you cannot

LaSalette brothers and priests from four American Provinces will meet June 16 at Regis College, Weston, for three days of prayer, reflection, celebration and planning. This will be the first such meeting for LaSalette Missionaries, who first came to North America in 1892. It is intended to give community members the opportunity to review and appreciate their heritage and their contributions to the Church, to reflect on their present ministries and to consider possible future activities. Two major presentations are planned: The Charism of LaSalette: Spirituality and Experience by Rev. Richard La Madeleine, MS, pastor of St. Peter's parish, Dagenham, England, and Dream-

VATICAN CITY (NC) - Pope John Paul II joined an estimated 100,000 people for a three-hour candlelight vigil in St. Peter's Square May 17, the eve of Pentecost and also the eve of his 66th birthday. He took the occasion to announce a forthcoming encyclical on the Holy Spirit. In a message released the same weekend for the 60th World Mission Day, the pope said he felt "the breath of a new Pentecost" in the moderh church, but said more evangelization is needed to heal "the break between the Gospel and culture." Speaking to some 30,000 people from his apartment window during a noon blessing May 18, the pope said the new encyclical, titled "Dominum et Vivificantem" (Lord and Giver of Life), will complete a "trinitarian trilogy." Two of the pope's previous letters to the church, "Dives in Misericordia" (on the mercy of God) and "Redemptor Hominis" (on redemption and the dignity of the human race) were written about God the Father and God the Son. The Holy Spirit encyclical is to· be published May 30, the pope said. It will focus on the meaning of Pentecost, the day the church commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles.

Vatican sources said it would be a spiritual meditation on scriptural and other texts, not a new teaching. Pentecost, known as the birthday ofthe Catholic Church, invites people to "speak all the languages of the contemporary world," the pope said. That includes "social, economic and political renewal" as well as "injustice and liberation," he said. During the May 17 vigil the pope celebrated Mass and announced a Rome diocesan synod, the second in the city's history. The synod will focus on the Second Vatican Council, the pope told the mostly Roman crowd. The pope began the dramatic nighttime ceremony by leading a procession from the Vatican's bronze doors through the packed square to the steps of the basilica, where he lit a torch next to the altar. Twelve people, representing the apostles, then carried the fire to other torches placed on the surrounding marble colonnade. When the crowd was asked to pledge to bring Christianity back to their daily lives in Rome, the square was lit with thousands of candles held on high. The Mass ended with a midnight procession behind an image of the Madonna of divine love, traditionally impo~ant to Rome's Catholics. -

CARDINAL SIN

Cardinal Sin at Stonehill Jaime Cardinal Sin, called "an extraordinary man" by Bishop Daniel A. Cronin, was the speaker at last Sunday's commencement exercises at Stonehill College, North Easton. Bishop Cronin was principal celebrant and homilist at Stonehill's baccalaureate Mass last Saturday and was present' at the commencement. Cardinal Sin, archbishop of Manila and a leader in opposing government fraud after the recent Philippine elections, was instrumental in bringing about change when he introduced now-President Corazon Aquino to Salvatore Laurel, elected as her vice-president. Calling Aquino's nonviolent revolution "the Lord's answer of mercy to the cries of millions of our little people," the cardinal credited it and the subsequent flight of longtime dictator Ferdinand Marcos to moral force and "the ultimate faith that brother should not slay brother." He told the graduates and their families that involvement of the Philippine bishops in the political arena came about only because "there was no one else our people· had to turn to." The cardinal was awarded an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree and it was recalled that Aquino had received the same degree from Stonehill in 1984. Other honorary degree recipients were Robert Keeshan, television's Captain Kangaroo; media specialist Tony Schwartz; Dr. Josephine L. Taylor, longtime educator of the blind; and Sister Barbara A. Whelan, CSJ, director of Boston's Bridge over Troubled Waters, a center for runaways and street youth. .

Coyle and Cassidy Mark Bettencourt, Michael Rafferty and Sarah Conroy, stu~ dents at Coyle and Cassidy High School, Taunton, will participate in Boys' State and Girls' State programs to be held respectively at Bentley College, Waltham and Bridgewater State College.

Frosting on the birthday cake for the first anniversary of the Harold K. Hudner Oncology/ Radiation Therapy Center at St. Anne's Hospital, Fall River, was the three-year Certificate of Approval the center recently merited. Awarded by the Commission on Cancer ofthe American College of Surgeons, the certificate recognized the excellence of every facet of the center's approach' to c~ncer care. And Dr. Richard Hellwig, the center's chief of oncology, and Maria Quindlen, RN, its nursemanager, also allowed themselves a small smile as they told of the nurse in a timeworn Boston facility who said crossly, "All I ever hear up here is how great St. Anne's is." What they hear, said Ms. Quindlen, is praise of center' features nearly impossible to duplicate in old Boston hospitals. They include a sunny, plant-filled waiting area, private nearby parking and nonthreatening, pleasantly furnished consultatiQn rooms. More importantly, the center offers state-of-the-art radiation therapy equipment of such sophistication that only in very rare cases must a patient travel elsewhere for treatment. In its first year of operation the center has served 51-2 new patients and handled 2,100 outpatient visits, including 10,357 radiation and I, 100 chemotherapy treatments. 348 oncology consultations have also taken place. Behind the statistics are people and that is never forgotten. In appreciation of both center patients

and community members who contributed $1 million to help make the center possible, an open house will be held from II a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, June I. The event is a thank you "to all of you who have made this dream come true," said its organizers, who hope to be swamped with visitors on June I. But no one is resting on his or her laurels, despite the prized certificate of approval, which listed among the center's excellences its active cancer committee that meets weekly to evaluate cases and plan activities; and its well-functioning tumor registry that keeps patients' records and makes statistics available for studies of cancer causes and treatments. Despite all that, the view is towards the future. "We had our first construction meeting this morning," said Dr. Hellwig at a recent interview. At St. Anne's for.seven years, he takes a lively interest not only in the medical aspects of the center but in all phases of its' construction.

He referred to planned expansion of the center and addition of a dual-capacity megavolt rotational accelerator to the therapy equipment already in place. The hospital's construction request will go to the state Public Heal~h Council in late June. If approved, the project should be finished in two years, said Dr. Hellwig, noting that the center expects a steadily increasing patient load as area cancer vicitims opt for close-to home treatment. Fr6m giving eight radiation treatments a day three years ago, the center now gives over 50 treatments daily, pointed out Ms. Quindlen. Not overlooked is the important area of community outreach. "All of us on the center staff are available for lectures and we'll go anywhere," stressed Ms. Quindlen, who holds a master's degree in oncology nursing from Yale University. She said arrangements for lectures or audiovisual presentations can be made through St. Anne's department of public relations.

Bishops get stay Continued from Page One have on First Amendment rights of all U.S. religious groups. He said the dispute "touches directly on fundamental issues" of church-state relations. "Do religious groups in the United States have a right to speak and act in permissible ways on behalf of their conscientious convictions regarding public issues?" he asked. "We contend that they do, and it is this fundamental principle which we seek to uphold." Msgr. Hoye's concerns were echoed by spokesmen for other churches. "A good portion of the religious community agrees ... that what is happening to the Catholic Church should be resisted," said Earl Trent, general counsel for the American Baptist Churches. Trent indicated that his church would file a friend-of-the-court brief in support of the Catholic bishops. Rev. Dean Kelley, director of religious and civil liberty for the National Council and an expert in church-state relations, said every American individual and organization would be at risk if "a third

party has standing to challenge your tax status... The case also raises the question of whether the tax exemption which churches enjoy "has anything to do with their degree of participation in the civic processes," he added. The National Council of Churches will also file a brief on behalf of the bishops, Mr. Kelley said. The New York Times editorially supported the bishops May 10 and predicted that the "underlying lawsuit will ultimately be thrown out of court. " "When the bishops enter the political arena, they have to expect the rough-and-tumble," the newspaper said. "But the have a legal right to disobey the court order (for documents) for they purpose of testing it. "
