FALL RIVER - The Anchor recently spoke with people around the diocese about their impressions of Bishop-Elect George W. Coleman and how he'll be as the next bishop when he's installed Tuesday. All were from parishes where BishopElect Coleman spent time as pastor or in some other capacity. Phil Cardarople of Corpus Christi Parish, East Sandwich, where Bishop-Elect Coleman served as pastor from 19851994, described him as "very humble, sincere and honest." Cardarople has known the bishop-elect for 16 years and said he's seen-him help many people over the years. "I'm very proud of him and extremely happy for him being named bishop," said Cardarople. "He's always welcomed me like his brother and I'm sure he'll fill that post very well." Pat Stebbins, also of Corpus Christi, said, "He has the makings of a saint," when asked about the incoming bis'lOp. "He's patient, thoughtful, speaks路 well to people and makes them feel welcome. I think he's a wonderful man and he'll be a blessing for the diocese." Joan Smith of Our Lady of Victory Parish, Centerville, where Bishop-Elect

Coleman served from 1972-77 said she ish, now Good Shepherd Parish, Fall has known him for 30 years at least. "He's .River. "He's the perfect choice;' stated Mary Farley of Our Lady of Victory. "We said years agq he should be a' bishop. He's a sincere and holy man who emulates Christ in every way." Farley said that the incoming bishop has been doing a great job behind the scenes for our diocese and is respected everywhere. "It's an awesome task, but he'll be up to it," declared Farley. "He's' a wonderful and caring priest." . Joe Ryan, also a parishioner of the Centerville parish, said "we couldn't have a better choice for bishop," adding that it's couldn't happen to a nicer or more compassionate person in Bishop-Elect Coleman. "He's a superb human being and I think we're very lucky to have him," said Ryan. In essence, the comments reflect the belief that the diocese is gaining an able shepherd. .

"As young people we were very involved in our· extended family," she noted. After graduation from there, the future priest and monsignor studied at Holy Cross College while Eileen would graduate from Bridgewater .State College and go on to a successful teaching career in Somerset and subsequently in Stoughton. . "I found it very difficult in following my. brother through school," Eileen said· with a smile. "He was always an A-student, and my teachers expected as much of me," she explained. "He had an ear for languages ... and I'm not surprised he does so well in Portuguese." It was in his initial years at Holy Cross that BishopElect Coleman announced to his family that he was going to pursue a vocation to the priesthood. "I don't think I noticed he had a vocation to be a priest, although others might have," Eileen said quietly. "Yes, he' was a prayerful young man, I remember, but not outwardly so." She recalls her parents and family being very excited at the news. Then the young man was off .to study at St. John's Seminary in Brighton. "I remember very clearly some years later when my seminarian brother received word that he was being sent to study at the North American College in· Rome," she said. "He and I were painting a room in the house and the telephone call came from the bishop's office, I think. Everything came to a halt that. day. The job never was completed." DEACON JAMES

N. DUNBAR

FALL RIVER - This old mill city's river the original inhabitants called Quequechan ("Falling River") because of its once panoramic falls, as well as the Irish lineage of Bishop-Elect George W. Coleman, are among the several armorial bearings on the official coat of arms he has chosen. . 路Apart from those historical items, the Blessed Mother is vividly remembered in design and color, reflective of the universal Church and the diocese's mother church; and the motto, in Latin "Domini Sumus" translated "We are the Lord's" , taken from'st. Paul's Epistle to the Romans, are among other divisions and symbols on the device. Designed by Deacon Paul J. Sullivan of Narragansett, a permanent deacon in the Diocese of Providence, the official "blazon" or heraldic description reads:

first and fourth quarters a trefoil and in the second and third a fleur-de-lis, all counterchanged." Deacon Sullivan explained its significance. The episcopal heraldic achievement, or, as it is more commonly known, the bishop's coat of arms, is composed of a shield with its charges (symbols) and the external ornaments. The shield, which is the central and most important feature of any heraldic device, is described (blazoned) in 12th century terms that are archaic to路 our modem language and this description is presented as if being given by the bearer with the shield being worn on the arm. Thus, where it applies, the terms "dexter" (right) and "sinister" (left) are reversed as the device is viewed from the front. By heraldic tradition, the arms of the bishop of a diocese, called the "Ordinary," are joined to the arms of his jurisdiction, seen in the "dexter impalement" (left side of the shield); in this Tum to page BH :"-Arms路 ';'

True to fo!'lT1, his parents continued their selfless ways. "My parents and my family were there for my ordination," said the bishop-elect. "It was not only my parents' first trip to Europe, but it was their first trip on an airplane. And I think on their part, it took some courage." The same care and' compassion the bishop-elect experienced at home and at school, he carried to his priestly ministry, and now carries to his role as bishop. He told The Anchor that his greatestjoy as priest is bringing the message of Jesus to others, and sees his becoming bishop as "an extension of that role." "A bishop should proclaim the ,Gospel to his pastorship," he said. "I ask for the prayers of the people of the Diocese of Fall River that I may do that by what I say and what I do." He quickly added, "no bishop can accomplish what the Church intends without the prayers and COllaboration of his brother priests, the religious, deacons and the laity. Together we will maintain and build up the Church. "One of the greatest challenges the Church, faces today is to maintain and develop a strong faith in God and the Church in an increasingly secular an~ materialistic world;'

he said. On the diocesan level, the bishopelect has great hope for facing that challenge. ''There are so many good people in this diocese at work to keep the Church strong. One ofthe greatest needs in our society, and therefore our Church, is the need.for strong families. There is a need to provide children with the education and the guidance they need in order to become strong citizens and strong members of the Church." Realizing there is an erosion of the family across the United States, the bishop-elect views the problem as "an extraordinary challenge." But harkening back to his steadfast family foundation he envisions family as one of the answers to that challenge. "The problem is of such magnitude that we can't look to solve it alone, but I think first of all we have to develop a means of reaching young married couples and families in order to impart the beautiful, profound and ultimately practical teaching of the Church on marriage and on family life. "I hope that individuals who are committed to strong family life will continue their commitment and develop ways of building up family life in our diocese and in our communities." As the diocese nears its lOOth anniversary, Bishop-Elect Coleman told The Anchor that "a centennial observation causes us to think of the past and we cannot help but think of Turn to page 817 -Appointment

Deacon Sullivan, who was ordained in October 1994, is assigned to St. Thomas More Parish in Narragansett. He lives with his wife, Kathleen, and son, Ryan.

In looking to the future, I am confident the Church will remain strong if we have that same sense of sacrifice and confidence that God is at work in our midst." Following the tradition of his predecessor, Bishop Sean O'Malley, OFM Cap., the bishop-elect will "make every effort to meet with the wonderful people of this di,ocese." He noted "there are thousands of faith-filled Christians in this wonderful part of the state who give me hope and confidence. Truly God is at work in the hearts of our people." During his interview with The Anchor, Bishop-Elect Coleman instinctively deflected attention from himself to concentmte on the flock he is about to shepherd. He accepted his appointment with humility and dignity. He repeatedly spoke of faith and sacrifice when referencing the Church, whether here in the Fall River diocese or across the globe. As this diocese embarks on its centennial sojourn, one . can't help but sense the warmth, faith and sincerity of the man who will lead us into the second century. And what a tremendous diocesan birthday gift that is.

The staff and parishioners of 81. Anthony of the Desert Parish, Fall River, offer their prayerful wishes to Bishop-Elect George W. Coleman

AS ADMINISTRATOR of the Diocese of Fall Bishop-Elect River, Coleman attended the bishops' meeting in Washington, D.C. last November, where he reunited with old friend, Bishop Sean O~Malley.

Diocesan family cherishes friendship with bishop-elect By DAVE JOLIVET EDITOR

FALL RIVER - In the mid-1960s, S1. Louis Parish in Fall River was pretty much like every other Roman Catholic parish in southeastern Massachusetts - except for one set of neighbors and friends. One of those neighbors, Bishop-Elect George W. Coleman, would eventually be named the seventh bishop of the Diocese of Fall River, and a pair of brothers in the other household, Craig A. and David A. Pregana, would go on to become priests serving that same diocese. In 1967, Bishop-Elect Coleman, then a young priest of less than three years, was assigned to S1. Louis Parish. About the same time, Arthur and Florence Pregana and their young family moved next door to the parish rectory. That was the dawning of a friendship that has carried through to this day. Eventually, Florence began to cook for the parish priests and she would routinely send her young son Craig and daughter Gail (Souza) to deliver the goods. "Father Coleman was such a gentle man and we quickly became good friends with our new neighbor," said Florence in an interview with The Anchor. "It didn't take too long

for the people of S1. Louis Parish to see what a humble, quiet and prayerful man he was. Everyone looked up to him." Including young Craig. "Growing up, I saw Father Coleman as an example of what a good parish priest should be," said Father Craig A. Pregana, diocesan director ofVocations. "He had such a reverence for the priesthood." Father Pregana told The Anchor that - Bishop-Elect Coleman's demeanor made a great impact on him as a young man. "He was an excellent model of holiness and stability." Father Pregana said that he was still a very young boy when the bishop-elect left S1. Louis Parish, and while it was the late Father John Foister who inspired him to pursue a vocation, it was "Father Coleman who laid the foundation of what I thought a priest should be," he added. "When he came to S1. Louis, he was such a humble man," said Arthur. "He was, and still is loving and giving. Just a super guy. And he did make an impression on Craig." During young Father Coleman's stay at S1. Louis, he went to many of the Pregana family outings and events. "My recollections of Father Coleman are a bit sketchy, but most of what I learned

about him came from stories my mother and father told me and my brother Dave," said Gail. "I can remember carrying lunches to him with Craig, but for the most part I knew he was a kind and gentle priest, from the stories my parents told."

Bishop-Elec.t Coleman at St. Louis, but I did get to know him as a friend of the family as I grew up," said F,ather David A. Pregana, parochial vicar at St. . Ann's Parish, Raynham. "Eventually I did see a priest who had great love for the Church. It wasn't difficult to see him as a man who was a very good listener. He's very intelligent, but very humble at the same time." Craig Pregana was ordained as a diocesan priest in January of 1989 and David followed suit in June of 1996. And family friend Bishop-Elect George Coleman was present on both occasions, and delivered the homily at Father Craig's first Mass. And true to form, the bishop-elect was at Gail's wedding. The entire Pregana clan was overjoyed when their good friend was appointed to be the seventh bishop of the Diocese of Fall River. "I was overwhelmed," said Florence. "Shortly after his appointment, I wrote to him and told him he 'filled the bill.' Bishop-

Elect Coleman has touched so ' many people in his lifetime with his gentle and giving ways. There are so many people he's quietly touched through the years." Arthur concurred. "There's no doubt he is a very deserving man of this honor. The people of this diocese should be very thankfuL" "I was ecstatic at the selection of Bishop Coleman," said Father Craig. "He is not someone who is afraid to try new approaches and is always willing to listen to everyone. "It is such an advantage to have him as our bishop because we know him and he knows us. He knows the diocese so well and he knows what needs to be done and won't hesitate to act." "I don't think they could have picked anyone better," said Father David. "The best quality he can offer is his great love for the Church., The Church is going, through such a difficult time right. now, but Bishop Coleman offers a great opportunity for growth. We are the Lord's This week's special edition of The Anchor is a dedicated commemorative issue honoring the ordination and installation of Msgr. George W. Coleman as the Seventh bishop ofthe Diocese ofFall River. As has been said so many times before, this event is indeed an historic one. Bishop Coleman will be the first leader ofthe diocese in its 100 years who was bom. educated, served as curate and pastor, directed the school office and assumed the respoitsibility as moderator of the Curia and vicargeneral in his home diocese. His years of dedicated and selfless service to the diocese have been a hallmarlc ofhis devotion to the people of God here in southeastern Massachusetts. As the new bishop assumes his awesome task in these difficult days of Church life, it is important for all the faithful to recognize the true role of bishop in the life of the Church. There are some who feel that a bishop should be elected as one would vote a politician to office. In the aftermath ofthe current Church crisis a torrent ofangry ideas have been bandied about in such a negative and subjective manner. It is so very importantfor all the faithful to reaffum the true theological role ofbishop in the life of the Uni~rsal Church. At Vatican II, the document "L1,unen Gentium" clearly indicated diat Christ willed that the Apostles' succesSOni, ~ bishops, wouldbe'toe shepherds ofhis Church until the end of time. In a very direcfway it was proclaimed, "This Sacred Synod consequently teaches that the bishops have by divine institution taken the place of the Apostles as pastOni of the Church in such a way that whoever listens to them is listening to Christ, and whoever despises them despises Christ and Him who sent Christ." , Such a teaching will never be found in the secular media, which for many is their daily bible. However, for membeni of the Church family, an individual bishop is the visible source and foundation of unity in their own particular churches. In tum, the bishop has the obligation of fostering and safeguarding the unity of faith, of teaching the faithful in love of the entire Mystical Body and of promoting those apostolates which will serve all the faithful, especially the poor and suffering. Given the exigency of our current need, it is important that bishops project in deed and fact the image of the Good Shepherd, who came to ~ ~e,rv~apg~o~be. waited on. ~ cpe <;Oun~il reflects, ''The bishop shOly.d ; .not refuseto listen to his People. whose welfare he promotes and whom he urges to collaborate with him:' It is indeed with this in mind that the new bishop has chosen as his episcopal motto the phrase "Domini Sumus" ("We are the Lord's"). ' The source of this motto is from the Letter to the Romans 14:8, which reads, ''For if we live, we live for the Lord, and if we die, we die for the Lord; so then, whether we live or die, we are the Lord's." A biblical commentary on this passage implies a restraining principle: Christian liberty is never license, but discharge ofour responsibility to the Lord. In the whole ofour experience, including death itself, we are related to the Lord. Not all people realize this, but the true believer does. That we are the Lord's determines their life. God has accepted each of us, can we do less? If we live to honor the Lord, this will be reflected in our actions and words, especially in the way we treat one another. . This indeed is Bishop Coleman's mind-set as he begins his leadership of the diocese. Setting this priority of pwpose, he tells us how he hopes to be an example offaith for all his people. Those who know him also know well his priestly ministry has reflected a beautiful sincerity of heart and a gentleness of pwpose. He gives himself tirelessly to the ministry that was entrusted to his person as he was ordained a priest. As he is ordained bishop, he surely will renew this pwpose of soul, in order that he may serve well all the faithful of this local Church. He knows well that he is the Lord's. The Executive Editor

A win-win situation I can recall many columns ago writing about those certain times in the sports calendar when three of the four major league home teams could possibly play on the same day. It happens twice a year ... in the fall, when the Red Sox, Bruins and Patriots could all be scheduled on the same day; and in the spring when the Bruins, Celtics and Sox could share the spotlight at once. As heavenly as that sounds, the danger is that all three could also lose on the same day, rapidly advancing the aging process for many New Englanders. Conversely, there's also the chance that all three will win on the same day, something New Englanders live for. I mention this only because it seems that Catholics in this neck of the woods have been experiencing that lose-lose-lose situation for what seems way too long a period of time now. The clergy sex-abuse scandals and subsequent cover-ups have left loyal Catholics reeling, praying for better days. Day after day, and month after month, Catholics have had their faith shaken, battered, and bruised with little letup. The constant losing was taking its toll. But alas, their prayers have been heard! Within the last few weeks, Catholics in our diocese and throughout the region in fact, have witnessed the end of that long losing streak. In the blink of

an eye, it seems, the faithful have had their spirits resurrected and hope has replaced despair. The first half of our win-win situation was the announcement of Msgr. George W. Coleman as the next bishop of the Diocese of Fall River. Thousands across this

heartaches and frustrations through the years. How fortunate Fall River was to receive Bishop O'Malley 10 years ago. The gentle Capuchin with the brown robe and the sandals brought healing and hope to a people who desperately needed it. And now, he brings that healing touch to our sister diocese at a time when they need it most. There's no question that Catholics in Massa' ....... chusetts have experienced a dark night of the By Dave Jolivet soul. In other parts of this "'~'l .~ country, the darkness continues, but in this rewonderful diocese thankfully re- gion the light at the end of the tunceived the good news. Not only nel is growing stronger and beis Bishop-Elect Coleman a native gins to warm the soul. There were times when it son, but also most agree he was the best choice to fill the vacancy seemed that God had abandoned left by the beloved Bishop Sean the Catholic faithful in this tiny corner of the world. But those who O'Malley. Speak with anyone who knows believe in his mercy, know deep the man, and they'll tell you that down inside that was never the case. In a few days, the Diocese of he is a humble, dedicated servant of God. Oh, how Catholics need Fall River will be blessed with a pious and caring shepherd. Good such a shepherd. In a few short days, the bishop- for us. And in a few weeks, our elect will become the seventh sister and brother Catholics in bishop in the Fall River diocese's Boston will receive a healing and IOO-year history, and never has loving shepherd. Good for them. To those Catholics who reits future looked so bright. The second half of the win-win mained steadfast and loyal scenario was the naming of old through the lose-lose-lose days, friend Bishop O'Malley as arch- . rejoice, you have endured. Your bishop of the Archdiocese ofBos- Church is healing. The Father is seeing to that. And that is better ton. Cardinals by the numbers: Few still alive who elected John Paul n ~ Archbishop O'Maliey

among those seen becoming a cardinal this fall. By JOHN NORTON CATHOLIC NEWS SERVICE VATICAN CITY - Pope John Paul II has invited the world's cardinals to Rome this fall to help him celebrate the 25th anniversary of the conclave that elected him supreme pontiff. But just a handful of the 166 scarlet-sashed prelates invited to the anniversary party actually took part in his election 25 years ago. Of the III cardinals who cast their votes on Oct. 16, 1978, only 22 are still alive - and one of them is the pope himself. ,In a quarter-century, Pope John Paul has left a personal mark on the College ofCardinals like few of his recent predecessors. He has named more than 95 percent of the 109 cardinal-electors - those who as of mid-July were under 80 and thus still eligible to vote in a papal conclave. Over the years he has created a total of201cardinals, far more than any pope before him. The pontiff who comes closest to his record is Leo XIII, who created 147 cardinals during his 25-year papacy from 1878 to 1903. And yet more cardinal nominations are on the horizon. Some Vatican officials are convinced the pope will use his election anniversary to confer another batch of red hats. Favoring their theory is the convenience factor, since all the

cardinals would already be in town, and the fact that by then the cardinal-electors would be about a dozen members short of the l20-maximum set by Church law. In fact, if there were to be a conclave to elect a new pope tomorrow and all the cardinal-electors were able to make it, there would be fewer cardinals participating than did in the last two conclaves held in 1978. . But other officials downplay the possibility. For one thing, an October ceremony would be it little sooner than the average three or four years between consistories. And it also might distract f~om the anniversary celebrations and the beatification of Mother Teresa of

Calcutta a few days later. The last time the pope created cardinals - a record 44 - was February 200 I. The new additions temporarily boosted the number of cardinal-electors to 135, 15 over the numerical limit that Pope Paul VI set and Pope John Paul has reaffirmed. The one U.S. prelate who is sure to receive the red hat at the next consistory, according to what appears to be unanimous Vatican opinion, is Archbishop Sean P. O'Malley, whom the pope appointed in early July to head the trol;1bled Archdiocese of Boston. That's not only because Boston traditionally has been headed by a cardinal, but also. because the pope

may want to boost the Capuchin friar's stature as he works to repair the archdiocese's reputation among Catholics and local civil leaders. In June, the United States lost one of its 11 electors - second in number only to Italy's 17 - when Philadelphia's Cardinal Anthony 1. Bevilacqua turned 80. Despite having passed the ordinary retirement age for bishops five years ago, his resignation has yet to be accepted by the pope, making him the oldest active residential cardinal in the

West. Another U,S. cardinal could make history as the only American to have elected three popes if a papal conclave is held before the end of 2006. Cardinal William W. Baum, a 76-year-old former Vatican official and former archbishop ofWashington, is one of five remaining voting-age cardinals who were named by Pope Paul VI. The group also includes Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, the Vatican's top doctrinal official.

Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish, New Bedford NEW BEDFORD - The history of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish began in the late 1800s when Polish people began immigrating to America. Adversity and hardship in Poland drove the Poles to seek a better life, .:nany of them settling in the New Bedford area. Dependent on visiting Polish priests from Providence and Boston to meet their spiritual needs, they welcomed Father Edward Uminski who arrived in New Bedford to serve its Polish population. A political refugee from a Russian-controlled area of Poland, he dreamed of establishing a Polish parish in New Bedford. Despite opposition, Father Uminski managed to raise sufficient funds to purchase the land off North Front Street, the site of the current church. Construction of a church began in July 1905. On Dec. 31, 1905, a year after the establishment of the Fall River diocese, Bishop William , Stang, the new diocese's first bishop, blessed the cornerstone and solemnly blessed the church. Father Uminski enshrined the icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in the main al-

tar. He was to remain pastor for 10 years. In 1908, Father Hugo Dylla, associate pastor, became the pastor. During his administration he liquidated the parish debts. In September, 1918, Father John A. Nowicky became pastor and he struggled through two years of hard times as the outbreak of Spanish Influenza impacted Masses and parish events. After two years he resigned and . returned to Poland. He was followed by Father Andrew Baj who served as pastor for two years. In 1932, Father Stanislaus Rycek took over as pastor and faced a parish on the brink of bankruptcy as the Great Depression tightened its grip on the nation. His suggestion that the parish be directed by a religious community was accepted by Bishop Daniel F. Feehan. On March 2, 1933, Conventual Franciscan Father Leonard Pakulski became the first of his community to take guidance of the parish. By 1935 under Father Richard Brzozowski, the debt was reduced. Under the pastorate of Father Norbert Zonca the mortgage was burned in 1950. But the church needed major te-

pairs and that work put the parish back into debt. Subsequent pastors included Father Adolph Banach, Father Seraphim Stachowicz, Father Fulgence Gorcyca, Father Joseph Trawinski and Father Felician Plichta. Father Roman Chwaliszewski became pastor in 1982. During his pastorate he has replaced the church roof, installed a parking area and replaced the 55-year-old organ. The rectory has been refurbished and the church's heating systems replaced.. In December 2000, St. Casimir Church in New Bedford, which began as a mission of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish, became a chapel in that parish under the administration of priests there. The current pastor of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish is Father Roman Chwaliszewski. Father Sebastian M. Slesinski and Father Isidore Kowalski are the parochial vicars. Frances Pimental is coordinator of religious education. The rectory is located at 235 North Front Street, New Bedford, MA 02746-1933. It can be reached by telephone at 508-992-9378; and by FAX at 508-993-4881.

FALL RIVER - Jll'I!y 19, 1904 is the spiritual! fuirthday of Espirito' S'anto Parisn' iin this city's Flint section. It is tIle first parish created' aftertne Fall River diocese itself was created that same year;. Its first bishop, Bishop William Stang~ established Espirito Santo Parish to meet the needs ofa路growingPortuguese community" In 1902, before tIle parish was' established, Fatheli Jorge S. Silveira, an assistant at Santo Christo Church". would come to the Flint to celebrate Mass. He raised enough money to buy a plot of land withy a house on Alden Str.eet. Thi:s: building, called the McGee; House, was used as a church, and the' two upperfl'oors served: as, a rectory. Bishop Stang blessed. the renovated house: as; aclimch on June 10" 1;90SI..I;路adLeJi SiiL"lrira became: the first pastlDn:. For the fitrst S1OO: years of the parish's existence~.Mass.was celebrated there. In 1910, the parishioners celebrated with joy the completion (l)f a new building which housed . both the parish church on the second floor and the first Portuguese Catholic grammar school in

America on the first floor. The Franciscan Missionaries 6f Mary staffed the school from its beginnings. The second floor church remained the parish's place of worship until the mid-1960s, when, because of the pressing need for a larger place to give fitting worship, the current church was built.. Espirito Santo Parish has taken pride from the beginning in her patronage by the Holy Spirit, to whom Catholics in the ,Azores have always given great adoration. This love for the third person of the Blessed Trinity overflows in her traditional Portuguese parish feasts, Mordomia celebrations and processions. The parish inaugurated her two-year centennial celebrations in January of 2003, on the lOOth anniversary of the establishment of this community of faith as a mission of Santo Christo. The centenary will be celebrated throughout the year 2004 in conjunction with the 100th anniversary of the diocese. The current pastor is Father James Ferry. Father Roger J. Landry is the parochial vicar and '

the deacon is Joao Moniz. Mary Bolton is school principal, Beverly Tavares is coordinator of religious education, the parish

secretary is Terry Lindo, the sexton is Joao Jacob, and Antonio Gouveia is the sacristan. The rectory is located at 311
