Welcome

Welcome

The Big Bang Fair Showguide 2013 Foreword by Dr Vince Cable MP and David Willetts MP

Welcome to The Big Bang UK Young Scientists & Engineers Fair 2013.

Welcome to The Big Bang UK Young Scientists & Engineers Fair 2013, featuring the finals of the National Science + Engineering Competition and the UK STEM Club Showcase

Now in its fifth year, The Big Bang Fair has established itself as the flagship event for science and engineering, attracting this year a record 55,000 young people, teachers and parents.

Dr Paul Go Chairma lby CBE FREng n, The B ig Young S cientists Bang UK & Engin eers Fair

More than 170 organisations from the world of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) are taking part in this event. Household names like Professor Brian Cox are giving up their time to contribute as judges and participants. This is because, like us, they see that it is vital to inspire the next generation to be part of the great adventure that is science and engineering. These are win-win subjects offering rewarding careers as well as helping to build a stronger UK economy and to improve our quality of life. We see this from projections: engineering companies will have close on to 3 million job opportunities from 2010 to 2020, with two thirds of these requiring specialist engineering skills.

The Rt. Hon Dr Vince Cable MP Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills

We see it also in the emergence of exciting new technologies which the UK will be in a strong position to exploit. We are in the vanguard of the big data revolution. We are pioneering new technologies to repair human tissue, to store energy and improve food production. We are inventing new cutting edge materials like graphene, and finding imaginative commercial uses for robots and satellites.

The Big Bang Fair – London 2013

With the vast range of activities, shows and exhibits on offer, The Fair provides an inspirational introduction to the world of science and engineering. The crucial message behind all the ‘fun of The Fair’, however, is that there is a wealth of exciting opportunities available to young people both in education and beyond into the world of work. The students exhibiting at The Fair are competing for prizes, most notably as part of the National Science + Engineering Competition. For these young people, to have reached the finals at The Big Bang Fair is in itself a great achievement. All participating STEM Clubs have also undergone a rigorous selection process. I would like to congratulate them all and wish them the very best, not just for these competitions and showcases, but for their future education and careers.

These sectors, which show the diversity of the world of science, will need the injection of new talent of the sort that we see on display at this event and participating in the National Science + Engineering Competition. There is a real buzz and sense of excitement to this industry which is going from strength to strength. And that enthusiasm and thirst for knowledge is evident as you tour the exhibition. The range and quality of entrants is truly impressive. The young people who have reached the final of the National Science + Engineering Competition – The Fair’s centre-piece – represent the best and brightest young talent from around the country. The Government is doing everything it can to increase that pool of talent, so that the UK can look to the future with confidence and optimism and retain its position of leadership in this field on the world stage.

The Big Bang Fair is the biggest single celebration of science, technology, engineering and mathematics for young people in the UK. This year is set to be our biggest yet with an expected 55,000 visitors on-site. On Thursday and Friday we will be welcoming students and teachers from schools and colleges across the country. The weekend is for families, when parents and guardians can join their children in discovering the wonders of science and engineering.

More than simply a great day out, The Big Bang programme aims to deliver ongoing engagement with young people, their parents and teachers – a “year

round conversation”. In 2012, The Big Bang Near Me events that took place across the country provided an opportunity for more than 20,000 young people, parents and teachers to experience, close to home, the excitement and opportunities available. The Near Me programme continues to expand across the UK with an expected 35,000 participants in 2013. We also work with the media and use social media to help more young people understand that studying science, technology, engineering and mathematics at school, college and university can open up a whole range of exciting and rewarding career opportunities. Involving over 170 different organisations, The Big Bang Fair 2013 represents an unprecedented partnership between Government, education, industry and the wider science and engineering communities. I would like to thank all of those who have supported this fantastic celebration of science and engineering and hope you will continue to do so in future years. By the time today’s school pupils are of working age, the UK will need almost two million additional engineers and technicians to meet the needs of our nation. The Big Bang is playing a vital role in providing young people with the support and inspiration needed to ensure that they become the scientists and engineers to address the challenges of the future.

STEM Guides STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) Guide volunteers are post-graduate students or have professional experience in science or engineering and can help to put into context some of the exhibits your students/ children will see. These experts are also happy to give information about the experiences they have had of STEM education, training or the places of work they have been in and give the young people a chance to question them in an informal setting whilst going around The Fair together.

Did you opt in to work with a STEM Guide while you are at The Fair? STEM Guides can be located at one of two STEM Guide meeting points – under the stairwell near the registration desk where you will arrive or by Hidden World in Farm to Fork. You can also pick one up from around the showfloor. Don’t worry if you didn’t opt-in for one when you booked, you can still pick one up if they are available. STEM Guides will be wearing white t-shirts as in the picture (left).

ation m r o f n I l a Addition Please note that volunteers will not have an encyclopaedic knowledge of every exhibit at The Fair. Some will have specialist science knowledge and others may have knowledge of some of the engineering & technology exhibits on show. They are experts in their own field, so if you have a preference for a particular subject that your students would like to learn more about, please ask for a STEM Guide at the STEM Guide meeting point and you will be allocated a volunteer from your preferred STEM background if they are available.

Although all of our STEM Guides are familiar with the overall layout of The Fair, they are not able to advise extensively regarding lunch options or other logistical issues. STEM Guides are not able to act in loco parentis and so cannot supervise your students/children.
