Orioles must replace dynamic skill players by Hobby King SPORTS WRITER In his second year as the Concordia Orioles' head coach, Tom Gramates led the Orioles to the brink of the state playoffs, making it to the Class 1, District 4 championship game. Despite losing at Crest Ridge 32-6 on a bitterly cold and windy night last November, the Orioles made great strides during the season. They finished second to the Cougars in the I-70 Conference's regular-season race, their only loss being to Crest Ridge 32-16 in the regular season. Their only other regular-season loss was to Class 2 Higginsville 42-26 in the season opener. The Orioles' offense was potent for most of the season, producing 516 points (43 points per game), the most among the conference schools. In conference games, the Orioles put up 342 points (48.9ppg), again the most among all league teams. This year might be different for the Orioles as they lost almost all of their skill-position players, including three-year starting quarterback Austin Hon and two-year starting running backs Layne Baldwin and Cass Heimsoth, the latter rushing for more than 1,200 yards in his senior season and nearly 2,000 total in his junior and senior campaigns. Hon will be hard to replace as he passed for more than 1,700 yards and 23 touchdowns and rushed for another 579 yards and 13 scores. Last year, Heimsoth scored 16 rushing touchdowns and caught 25 passes for 514 yards and seven TDs. Baldwin rushed for 574 yards and two scores. Also gone is Cory Meineka, who rushed for 465 yards and five TDs and Austin Beydler, who caught 26 passes for 552 yards and nine scores. Up front, the Orioles will miss Tony Sherman and Dalton Treat. Gramates said he will move Jordan Schlueter, who was a receiver last year, to quarterback this season. A year ago, Schleueter caught 15 passes for 432 yards and seven scores. Chiefs need to find replacement for Martinez's production by Hobby King S PORTS W RITER Returning nine starters on each side of the ball, the Santa Fe Chiefs could see improvement in their record in 2014. They were 4-6 last year. However, they must find some type of replacement for all-conference and all-state workhorse running back Alex Martinez, who carried the mail for more than 1,600 yards and double-digit touchdowns. Also gone are seniors Julio Ruiz and Brandon Rieves who contributed on both sides of the ball. The Chiefs will be buoyed by the return of starting quarterback Ben Hinz, a 6-foot-1, 180-pound junior. “Ben Hinz and (senior) Truman Sleeper (6-2, 175) will lead a more diverse group of play-makers, eighthyear head coach Andy Frerking said. “The offense should be more balanced. He points to the return of fullback Gutherie Baldwin (5-8, 189, junior), Chris Breland (5-8, 128, sophomore) and Ty Bell (6-2, 176, senior) as being important. And with the return of Ben Reeders (6-2, 210, junior) after he lost last year to injury and Luke Schmidt (6-3, 150, junior), “the opposition will not be able to key so much on one aspect of the offense, Frerking said. Frerking also is impressed with the newcomers. “The freshman class has added some good, young depth, he said. “Several of them should be contributing on special teams. Leading tacklers Hinz and Sleeper are back on defense. “The defense will be led by the linebackers and the secondary, Frerking said. “We are hoping for improved play from run stoppers up front. “A year of getting stronger and faster ought to help. The Chiefs sport a roster of 26, including four seniors, 11 juniors and two sophomores. Frerking is hopeful everything gels. “Overall, the team has had a good off-season, he said. “The conference and district should both be strong. “Playing with great effort and staying healthy will be key for the Chiefs. Being able to play a full JV (junior-varsity) schedule should help the depth to improve throughout the season. Frerking is hopeful the Chiefs are Frerking peaking at the end of the season when the district playoffs start.

Conley, Greyhounds looking forward to challenges by Hobby King SPORTS WRITER Melvin Baker resigned after the 2013 football season, and stepping in to take over the Sweet Springs Greyhounds is Kris Conley, who knows it will be a challenge to build the team into a contender. Conley, a 2004 graduate of Jefferson City High School and 2010 graduate of the University of Central Missouri, in Warrensburg, is excited about the opportunity. “I feel welcomed with the support I am getting from the community and school,” Conley said. “I am excited to see how this year plays out. “I have high expectations, based on the work ethic and growth we have made so far this summer.” Numbers over the past couple of years had dipped into the teens as far as a roster. As of the writing of this article, the Greyhounds' roster numbers 23, including 10 seniors, six juniors and two sophomores. Although there are still competitions for starting positions going on, a number of top candidates have emerged, some of whom did not play in the past couple of seasons. Conley — who will be assisted by Ryan Armstrong, Jacob Cocoran, Zach Thomas and Vince Fink — will try to figure out a way to help out the offense. It scored 150 points last year, but needs to be more productive. It all starts at quarterback where senior Andrew Krause will call signals. He has not played since his freshman season. Last year, four different players played quarterback, with Jeffery Hall, who graduated, throwing the most passes (101). In the double wing formation Conley will utilize, 6-foot-2-inch, 180-pound senior Trevor Phillips will be the leading candidate at running back. He rushed for 202 yards and a touchdown last year. Out wide, 5-foot-11-inch, 155-pound junior Mario Persell and 5-foot-6-inch, 145-pound sophomore Levi Miller are the top prospects. Persell caught eight passes for 64 yards and a touchdown last year. Miller had one reception for 38 yards. Top candidates in the slots are 5-foot-7-inch, 160-pound junior Rhett Snider and 5-foot-8-inch, 145-pound senior Austin Boland. Snider rushed for
sack. Phillips registered 75 tackles to lead all returning players. He also added two fumble recoveries and one blocked field goal. Boland and returning starter Persell are slated to be the corner backs, with Persell totaling 22 tackles and one fumble recovery. Krause is the top candidate for safety. “We have to be tough up front and swarm to the football,” Conley said. Defensively, the Greyhounds gave up 246 points (35.1ppg) in league play and 296 points (29.6ppg) in all games. Meyer should handle kick-off duties, with Phillips being the team's punter and place— Kris Conley kicker. Conley is hopeful the team responds to the ior, is set to be the right tackle. Tigers hope to carry over late-2013 success by Hobby King SPORTS WRITER A year ago, the Wellington Tigers took a step back, at least in the first nine games of the season. They were youthful and inexperienced, picking up their play late in the season and eventually advancing to their district championship. They finished 3-4 in the I-70 Conference and 5-7 overall. Eighth-year head coach Quenton Bainbridge is hopeful the Tigers' putting things together in district play carries over to 2014. The Tigers averaged 26.3 points per game offensively in 2013. They put up 31.1 points per game in conference contests. Bainbridge will be moving 6-foot tall, 175-pound junior Dallas Reynolds to quarterback from his starting spot at running back last year. “Our quarterback has a lot of responsibility in our offense,” Bainbridge said. “He will have to play well for our offense to be successful.” In the pistol-spread formation, sophomore Dylan Brockmeyer (6-0, 175) sophomore will move into the starting role at running back. The Tigers have several receivers returning with varsity experience, including senior starter Levi Banner (5-
7, 160). They also return senior Alex Rodenberg (6-1, 175) and junior Blake Gray (5-7, 160). Moving out from behind the center to split out wide will be junior Tristan Green (6-1, 175). Duncan Hughes, a 6-0, 175 sophomore also “will see a lot of playing time, Bainbridge said. The Tigers return two starters on the line, but they also will have two underclassmen manning the tackle slots. Stepping in at the tackles are going to be 5-foot-10inch, 220 freshman Stone Willoughby on the right side and 6-foot-2-inch, 220 sophomore Matt Block at left tackle. Luke Schaberg, a 6-foot tall, 175 junior, is slated to be the right guard. One of the returning starters is 6-foot, 175 junior Zach Jenkins at left guard, with the other starter back being 6foot-2-inch, 200 junior Brock Brockmeyer at center. “Our offense is coming along well,” Bainbridge said. “We have a lot of our skill players back and should be poised to be very successful.” “We are pretty inexperienced up front,” Bainbridge said. “We will have to continue to improve on the line if we want to be successful.” On defense, the Tigers allowed opponents 34 points per game in conference play and 34.2 PPG in all games last year.
Defensively, the Tigers return eight starters, including all of their linebackers. On the front are slated to be Dylan Brockmeyer and returning starter Jenkins at defensive ends. Brock Brockmeyer, Willoughby and Block are listed as tackles. Reynolds, Rodenberg and Schaberg are the heart of the defense as returners as linebackers. They also have all of their defensive backfield back, including Banner and Gray at corner backs and Green at free safety and Hughes at strong safety. “We are going to have to tackle,” Bainbridge said. “We are going to have to not allow the big plays.” All of the kicking specialists are back, too. Banner is scheduled to kick off, Gray do the place-kicking and Reynolds the punting. Bainbridge, who has a roster of 23, including two seniors, seven juniors and six sophomores, thinks Crest Ridge still is the front-runner in the league. “They have a lot of their talent back from last season and should be tough in all phases,” Bainbridge said. “Lone Jack, Concordia and Saint Paul will all be very good football teams and could make a run for the conference title. Santa Fe will be good, headed up by (Ben) Hinz and returning most of their line. But they will have a tough time replacing (Alex) Martinez.”
Despite graduating key seniors, Cougars still talented by Hobby King SPORTS WRITER For the first time since 1999, the Crest Ridge Cougars claimed the I-70 Conference crown outright in 2013 by finishing off a perfect 7-0 run. The Cougars, who advanced to the Class 1 quarterfinal round before being beaten at Osceola, finished 11-2 overall. The price they paid was the loss of numerous marquee players, including quarterback Ethan Matthews, to graduation. Matthews, who accounted for 2,160 yards of total offense and 37 touchdowns rushing and passing, was voted the conference's offensive most valuable player. He was the first-team selection at quarterback and linebacker in the conference. He also earned all-state honors as an all-purpose player. “We lost a lot of good football players to graduation, and there are several holes to fill,” Cougars' seven-year head coach Chris Cavanah said. The Cougars also lost offensive linemen Caleb Thomas and Johnny McCannon. Thomas earned all-conference first-team honors on offense and was third-team all-state. McCannon was a third-team all-stater as a defensive lineman with 56 tackles and six sacks. Dallas Hoffman was a go-to player on the outside as a receiver, and he earned first-team all-conference as a kicker. He also was second-team all-conference as a receiver, hauling in 22 aerials for 291 yards and six scores.
Others who graduated included Sheldon Brown (RB/FS), Nick Gillotti (DL), Austin Bestgen (WR/DB), Austin Fitterling (WR/DB), Brandon Erisman (WR/LB), Justin Evans (WR/DB) and Dusty Stone (OL/DL). Brown (68 tackles, six interceptions) earned all-conference second-team status as a free safety and Gillotti (41 tackles) second-team all-conference on the defensive line. “Last year's senior class had a lot of talent, and they great leaders, both on the football field and in the weight room,” Cavanah said. The Cougars averaged 257 yards rushing and 347 yards of total offense per game. They scored 63 touchdowns, scoring 425 points (32.7ppg) overall and 294 (42.0ppg) in conference games. On defense, the Cougars recorded 29 sacks and picked off 22 passes while limiting opponents to 166 points (12.8ppg) in all games and 56 points (8.0ppg) in league contests. The cupboard is far from barren as several players return with an abundance of experience and post-season experience and honors. “There are a few players who have played big roles for us in the past that will need to step up and play bigger roles for us this year,” Cavanah said. The list of returning starters includes seniors Cole Renick and Justin Donald and juniors Matt Dick and Noah McCune. Renick was the Defensive MVP and firstteamer in the conference at linebacker with 138 tackles, 5-1/2 sacks four fumble recoveries. He also was a third-
team all-stater. Donald was a first-team all-conference and a second-team all-state defensive back 69 tackles and seven interception. He also earned second-team status as a running back, a position where he gained 1,131 yards and 13 TDs. Dick earned all-conference first-team status as an offensive and defensive lineman, at which he registered 44 tackles and 4-1/2 sacks. Cavanah said the Cougars were strong on defense last year and will need to be again this year. “Defensively, we were very good last season, only giving up 6.8 points per game in our 11 wins,” he said. “We will need to have a great defense again this year to have similar success.” “Offensively, we need to find some guys that can step up and carry our team,” Cavanah said. “The past few seasons, Matthews has been that guy. Now it's time for somebody else to do it. “We have several players who are capable, but we've got to see how it all comes together.” Cavanah, who will be assisted by Jake Vencill, Flip Courter, Mark Amos, Keagan Prather and Ross Parker, is hopeful last year's success continues. “I'm excited for the season to get started and try to build on our recent success,” he said. “It will be a tough task with several really tough teams in our conference and district. We need to be prepared every Friday night for a dogfight.”

Bearcats have roster of 18 for first-year coach by Hobby King SPORTS WRITER Ever since Pat Richard left for Oak Grove following the 2010 season, the Orrick Bearcats have been trying to gain their footing on the gridiron. They have been slipping for a while, and now they will be under the direction of their third head coach in four seasons as David Rash will be taking over the program. Rash is a 1988 graduate of Grandview High School and 1993 graduate of
the University of Central Missouri, in Warrensburg. He is excited about the opportunity and will have a roster of 18, including six seniors, to try to turn around the Bearcats' fortunes. They have been able to beat the Wentworth Dragons the last few years but not many other teams. They are coming off a 1-9 season and will be moving to a flex-bone offensive attack with senior Dean Opoka being the quarterback. Senior Tyler Crow, junior Bryar Martin and sopho-
more Alex Stockton are slated to be in the backfield with Opoka. Sophomores Colin Inks and Stephen Curley are in line to be the starting right and left tackles, respectively, across the front line. Sophomore Doug Lindeman is the top candidate to start at right guard and freshman Walker Easley at left guard. The only upperclassman on the offensive line will be Merl Lebo at center. “We will rely on the run with a ballcontrol offense,” said Rash, who will be assisted by Mitch Comstock, Stephen
Smothers, Brian O'Dell and Ben Thomason. “It will take all 11 players (for us to be successful).” Defensively, the Bearcats will line up in a 4-3 scheme. Starters haven't been decided at the time of this writing. “We will stress playing smart and physical defense,” Rash said. A year ago, the Bearcats scored 18 points (2.6ppg) in conference action and 82 points (8.2ppg) in all games. On defense, they allowed 369 points (52.7ppg) in league play and 494 (49.4ppg) in all games.
Mules return Brandon, Kirk to lead team by Hobby King SPORTS WRITER Coming off a season where his Lone Jack Mules were over .500 in the I-70 Conference and on the season, thirdyear head coach Jason Fenstermaker is excited to get the season started. Having their starting quarterback and a starting running back returning might give the Mules, who were knocked out of the state playoffs with a 34-11 loss to West Platte in the Class 1 round of 32, a little advantage. Fenstermaker, who will be assisted by Ken Howard, Garrett Beck, Dustin Darby, Dan Tuttle, Marcie Fenton and Joseph McCorkle, says the Mules will be young and inexperienced at some positions. Offensively, the Mules used their ground game to produce the bulk of their yardage out of spread formation. Back this season is 6-foot-1, 180-pound junior Joey Brandon as the signal caller. He rushed for a team-high 993 yards and 14 touchdowns. Also back is starting running back Nick Kirk, a 5-11, 175-pound senior who gained 822 yards and scored 10 rushing touchdowns. Brandon also threw for 639 yards and four scores. ®

A pair of sophomores return with experience on the outside. Tyler Berry, who is a big target at 6-4, 220 pounds, hauled in three passes for 35 yards last year. Justin Moore (5-10, 165) caught six aerials for 81 yards. Up front, the Mules could be a work in progress, according to Fenstermaker. “The offensive line is going to be young and inexperienced,” he said. “We will be working to try to find our best five.” Offensively, the Mules scored 162 points (23.1ppg) in conference games and 243 points (22.1ppg) in all games. Defensively, the Mules gave up 144 points (20.6ppg) in league contests and 260 points (23.6ppg) in all games. On defense, the Mules return some starters but will need to plug in other play-makers. “We will have many young kids trying to earn a job at our two defensive end spots,” Fenstermaker said. Senior Trevor Wilson (5-11, 275) will anchor the line, moving from his starting spot at middle linebacker last year to nose guard. He totaled 36 tackles as a junior. Fenstermaker says four of the five linebackers will be new. “Moore and Brandon will be on the outside for us (at
Brownsville Station 102 E Highway 40 Sweet Springs, MO, 65351

cornerbacks),” he said. Moore accumulated 16 tackles, an interception and one fumble recovery last year. At free safety, there will be tough competition between young and old guys, Fenstermaker said. He said the offensive line will dictate how the season goes. “Like always, it starts with the offensive line,” he said. “We will be as good as they allow us to be.” “Besides the offensive line, the quarterback has to be very efficient.” Defense might be the biggest question mark. “We will be very inexperienced as we lost five allconference defenders,” Fenstermaker said. “But the kids are hungry and ready to step up. “We will have to be willing to fly around and hit people.”
Good luck to all the area teams!

Back is a slew of players with varsity experience, including 5 foot-6 inch junior Cailey Cooper, 5 foot-6 inch senior Brittany Reinwald and 5 foot-4 inch junior Mallory Scherer as outside hitters. Cooper had 106 kills a year ago. “(She) has worked extremely hard in the off-season, and it is paying off in her attacks,” Basye said. Scherer had a 43 percent kill percentage and Reinwald 33 percent on the right side. Showing potential to play in the front row are 5 foot -6 inch freshmen Madyson Langkrahr and Sami Brackman. “Mariah Rudy (6-0 sophomore) is moving to the right side this year to capitalize on her blocking ability,” Basye said. Lady Saints will try to regain control of conference by Hobby King SPORTS WRITER Aaron Marsh's Saint Paul Lady Saints volleyball team lost grip of the I-70 Conference title for the first time in his head-coaching career at the school last year. They will be gunning to get back to the top of the heap and have three starters returning to try to do that. The Lady Saints did win a district championship, advancing to the state tournament, losing in the sectional round in three sets to Summit Christian Academy. They wound up 27-10 overall and 6-1 in the I-70 Conference. Marsh — who will be assisted by Amanda Meineka — Andrea Kueck and Esther Mehl, has a roster of 14, including four seniors, two juniors and four sophomores. Gone are starters Hadley Rolf, Bre Vogelsmeier and Alyssa Hamblen. At outside hitter, the Lady Saints return Tiffany Bennett and Gabby Kueck. Rebecca Roepe is a returning starter at middle hitter. Also slated to
play in the middle is Anna Colwell. Shannon Peters is back as the team's starter at setter. Kueck, Meghann Roepe and Caroline Hagan also could fill in opposite Peters in the other weak-side slot, according to Marsh. Emily Aversman is the leading candidate to be the team's libero or defensive specialist. “I feel like we have four very talented offensive players—Tiffany, Becca, Gabby and Shannon,” Marsh said. “These four will no doubt carry us offensively,” Marsh said. Marsh said the Lady Saints have some decent height in the middle to put up a block. “Otherwise, we are focusing a lot on ball control, because if we don't, we know we will not be able to use our very strong hitters,” Marsh said. The Lady Saints should have a strong attack. “Our offense and aggressive serving is what should help us put pressure on teams,” Marsh said. He said a key to the season is how well the Lady Saints play on the back row, limiting opponents' extra

Experience returns for Lady Tigers by Hobby King SPORTS WRITER A year ago, the Wellington Lady Tigers' volleyball team went finished in the upper half of the I-70 Conference under the direction of Peggy Tuter. Now, Tuter will be entering her fourth year as mentor of the Lady Tigers with the majority of the starters returning. Gone from a year ago are middle hitter Kaitlyn Jones and setter Christa Beckemeyer. The roster numbers 20, including four seniors and two juniors. Top middle hitters for the Lady Tigers are 5 foot-10 inch senior Tori Florence, who also will play some on the right side, and 6 foot-3 inch senior Mikayla Lohsandt. Also in position to claim the starting position at outside hitter is 5 foot-8 inch senior Abbie Thompson, with 5 foot-7 inch junior Morgan Weedman in line to be a starter at outside or middle hitter.
Two players vying for setter are 5 foot-4 inch junior Jaime Ruskey and 5 foot-7 inch sophomore Sammy Blystone. Madison Thornburg, a 5 foot-7 inch senior, will serve as the team's libero. “These were all returning starters from last year,” Tuter, who will be assisted by Derek Twombly, said. “Sammy Blystone had limited time last year but will move into a more permanent position (this season).” Tuter is hopeful the Lady Tigers have a solid season. “My seniors have been with me for four years. We have a very good group of freshmen who have come to the program.” Tuter said fans and opponents could see some new wrinkles. “We are fine-tuning this year and adding some new offense,” she said. “We will try to eliminate the giveaway points and unforced errors.”

Loads of talent returning for Lady Chiefs by Hobby King SPORTS WRITER Last year was another banner season for the Santa Fe Lady Chiefs on the volleyball court. In addition to making it to their fourth straight Class 1 Final Four and coming away with third place, they also dethroned four-time reigning I-70 Conference champion Saint Paul, winning the league with a perfect 7-0 mark. The Lady Chiefs, who finished 30-4-4 overall, lost two starters and one reserve off of last year's squad. Gone are starters Brooke Barnett, one of two setters, and Mikiah Zumalt, a starting outside hitter. Tristan Sowers a reserve outside hitter. Barnett dished out 404 assists and 102 digs and earned first-team allconference and all-region accolades. Zumalt totaled 58 kills and 45 digs. The Lady Chiefs have a roster of 20, including four seniors, seven juniors and two sophomores. They are buoyed by the return of four starters to a potent lineup. Courtney Bishop is a 5-7 junior outside hitter who pounded 95 kills, served up 17 aces and had 47 digs. “Courtney is one of our power hitters,” fourth-year head coach Kinsey Harms said. “She has shown great leadership ability and inspires the girls to keep working hard in practice.” In the middle, the Lady Chiefs return starter Lexi Smith, a 5 foot-9 inch senior who amassed 378 kills. She also had 28 service aces, 139 digs, 45 solo and 34 assisted blocks. She was first-team all-conference, all-district, all-region and all-state. “Lexi has continued to push herself to get better,” Harms said. “She's focusing on fixing the little things that can make her go from a good volleyball player to a great volleyball player.” Another returning starter is 5 foot-8 inch Junior Kylie Limback, who blasted 334 kills and 37 aces. She also had 134 digs, 34 solo and 26 assisted blocks, earning first-team all-conference, all-district, all-region and all-state. “Kylie is pushing Lexi every day,” Harms said. “They've been so lucky to have each other as competition. Neither one of them would be who they are without each other. “I've seen players with tons of talent and zero drive. Kylie is great because she's a workhorse and loves the game.” Lauren Wiggins, a 5 foot-6 inch junior, also is a returning starter, dishing out 392 assists. She also accumulated 37 aces and 105 digs. “She's done a great job of taking charge of our offense,” Harms said. “She's consistent and becoming more and more creative.” Kenzie Phillips, a 5 foot-3 inch junior, returns as
the starting libero. She made 168 saves last year. “Kenzie has shown great leadership in our defensive drills,” Harms said. “Her confidence and knowledge of hitter tendencies make her a great passer.” Also returning as varsity players trying to earn starting roles are 5 foot7 inch junior Photo courtesy of Lee Studio Leigha Graf, 5 Members of the 2014 Santa Fe Lady Chiefs Volleyball Team are: Cara Hinz, Brittany Dillon, foot-5 inch sen- Kenzie Phillips, Caitlyn Aversman, Alexa Begemann; (second row) assistant coach Brian Crutchior Masey Peters field, Emily Limback, Kalyn Dillon, Lauren Wiggins, Courtney Bishop, Kylie Limback, Kimber and 5 foot-6 LaGore, Lydia Wetter, manager Phoebe Tieman, head coach Kinsey Harms; (back row) Hope inch junior Massey, Abby Zitelman, Katey Peters, Masey Peters, Lexi Smith, Sadie Limback and Leigha Abby Zitelman. Woolsey, who will be entering her sixth year as head coach, has a roster that numbers 20, including five seniors, seven juniors and four sophomores. The Lady Cougars lost three seniors, including Kennedy Dick, who saw significant varsity playing time, according to Woolsey. The Lady Cougars return seven players with varsity experience. Returning outside hitters are senior Whitney Hutcherson and junior Kyla Nimsgern. Junior Megan VanHarn is new to the program and provide the team height at 5-10, according to Woolsey. There are two returning varsity players as middle hitters in juniors Lily Hunter and Kaylee Schmidli. Junior Heather Delana is a returning varsity player at setter. Sophomore Timber Erisman also is a setter. “Both are quick and have good hands,” Woolsey said. They are competing for playing time.” Senior Kelsie Seaman returns and does senior Leah Kemple, battling for the libero spot. “Both are quick and are good passers,” Woolsey said. Woolsey said several players can hit. “Lily and Kaylee are our strongest hitters,” she said. “The outsides are developing more consistency.” Woolsey said the team's defense needs improvement. “This group works hard and is very coachable,” Woolsey said. “So our defense will improve quickly.” Woolsey said she is happy with the work ethic. “(It's an athletic group with an eagerness to improve,” she said. But not being consistent is a problem. Woolsey said the Lady Cougars need to improve daily and focus on taking care of their side of the net.

The Orrick Lady Bearcats' volleyball team will be under the direction of a new head coach in 2014. Mentoring the Lady Bearcats will be Lauren Duvall, a 2009 Crest Ridge High School and 2013 graduate of the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg. Duvall is familiar with the Lady Bearcats' program having been an assistant coach on the varsity level and the junior high head coach last year. She also has head-coaching experience, leading the Crest Ridge junior-high team in 2009 and 2010. The Lady Bearcats, who won the Class 1, District 15 championship in 2013 before losing to Santa Fe in the sectional round of the state playoffs, lost four players — Madison Winters, Sydnee McGlothlin, Shaina Cook and Madison Endsley-- to graduation. “All contributed leadership to the team,” Duvall said. Endsley earned all-conference and all-district honors. Duvall has a roster of 18, including three seniors, five juniors and five sophomores. Hannah Thurnau, a 5 foot-5 inch junior, is a returning starter as an outside hitter. “She is recovering from a previous injury, but will be a great addition when she returns,” Duvall said. “We have several young players that we are looking to step up to the challenge of filling varsity shoes.” Senior Sam Fulte, a 5 foot-9 inch middle hitter, returns as a starter. She also earned all-conference and all-district honors. “Her natural athletic ability makes her a threat on offense and defense,” Duvall
After being under the direction of Gayla Surber the last 3-1/2 years, the Lone Jack Lady Mules' volleyball team will now be head coached by Jerry MacLean, who last was head coach in the first half of the 2010 campaign. MacLean has a lengthy list of experience as a volleyball head coach including nine years at Blue Springs South, four years at Pleasant Hill and four years at Santa Fe, where he also was head football coach for eight to 10 years. MacLean, who will be assisted by Senae Fenton, takes over a program that lost a key player, Hailey Nazworthy, to graduation. Nazworthy received a scholarship to play voleyball at Missouri Valley College in Marshall this fall. MacLean who was an assistant football coach last year, hasn't set a starting line-up yet, but he did mention three players vying for starting spots as outside hitters. The list includes seniors Rachel Anderson and Sammy Kralicek, both of whom started last year, and sophomore Ashton Stroupes. At middle hitter, MacLean said there are four top candidates including senior Sammy Lund, sophomores Savannah Lyons and Andie Arnone and freshman Malaina Kirk. “They work really hard. We just don't have any seasoned hitters,” MacLean said. MacLean said the Lady Mules will be least experienced at setter where four players are trying to nail down the starter's role. He said senior Lydia Becbar, sophomore Taylor Meeks and freshmen Mattie Eichelburger and Kennedy Hurlock. MacLean said the strength of the team is its passing. But the hitters are not tall, many of them Good luck to all the area teams! being around 5 foot-2 inches in height. “They are willing to put in the effort to get better,” Over 19,000 Pairs of Boots he said. Madison Fulte, who played varsity last year. “She has determination and is a natural athlete,” Duvall said. “Madison is young, but is developing skills and knowledge to become an outstanding player.” Setter is a position up in the air. “We have a couple of young athletes that have been working during the off-season to improve their setting skills,” Duvall said. “Sophomores Madison O'Dell and Kaitlin Arnold are both potential varsity setters. Both girls have the ability to play as hitters, as well.” Sydney Boude, a 5-5 junior, is a top candidate to be the libero. “Boude has previous experience as a defensive specialist,” Duvall said. “She is constantly improving her passing technique.” Duvall said the Lady Bearcats' hitters should be solid. “We are building strength every day,” she said. “The girls are learning to put power behind their hits and to be accurate with approaches and swings.” Duvall thinks defense will be a strength. “We have some great passers and girls that will work hard for the good of the team,” she said. Lack of experience on the varsity level could be a negative. “I'm sure whoever fills the varsity spots will learn quickly on what to expect,” Duvall said. So, what has to happen for the Lady Bearcats to be successful? “We need to focus on being consistent and accurate,” Duvall said. “We need to continue to work on fundamentals. If we improve the little details in our fundamentals, we will be very successful.”
