In his second season as the head coach, Eric Hon is hoping the Concordia Orioles improve in many areas. They finished the 2012-2013 season with a 12-15 overall record, but they were above .500, 4-3, in the I-70 Conference. Gone from that squad are Brian Meyer and Jesse Schnakenberg, who was second on the team in rebounding. Three starters return for Hon, who is being assisted by Alic Frerking. However, the Orioles will be without one of those starters due to an injury late in the football season. Out until after Christmas break will be 6-foot-3 senior guard/post Austin Hon. A year ago, Hon averaged 11 points (PPG), 6.5 rebounds (RPG), 2.1 steals (SPG) and 1.6 assists (APG) per game. Healthy and ready to go is 6-3 senior guard/post Cass Heimsoth, the team’s statistical leader in many categories, including averaging 19.3 PPG. He also added 6.0 RPG, 1.1 blocked shots (BPG) per game, 2.4 SPG and 3.4 APG. “Cass is going to have to be the leader on the floor with the loss of Hon,” coach Hon said. “I have all the confidence in him to do that.” The other returning starter is 6-2 senior guard Austin Beydler, who averaged 6.9 PPG, 2.8 RPG, 1.1 SPG and 1.0 APG last year. Austin will have to be more aggressive with the ball,” coach Hon said. “I look for him to step up with a year of experience under his belt.” There are eight other players vying for the other starting spots, including five who gained valuable varsity experience last year. Tony Sherman is a 5-9 senior guard who played in all 27 games last year. Trent McGinnis is a 6-3 junior post. “I see him as being a large contributor to our offense, making his presence known on the boards,” coach Hon said. Zack Toole is a 6-1 junior guard/post. Ty Flandermeyer is a 5-10 junior guard. Toole and Flandermeyer earned some varsity playing time in spots last year.

Hayden Moore, a 5-10 junior guard, who also played some minutes on the varsity level last season. Coach Hon looks to 6-3 junior Evan Collner to come off the bench and give his team some minutes in the post. Jordan Schlueter, a 6-1 sophomore guard, also will come off the bench. “Jordan has grown over the summer and will be another big body on the defensive end,” coach Hon said. “If Jordan keeps working hard, I see him seeing the floor a lot this season.” Wade Heimsoth is a 6-2 freshman post who coach Hon said “is very raw but has the potential to help us out.” Coach Hon looks at the point guard as being the strength of the team. “Cass grew all last season in this role,” he said. “I see him being even better this

Saints have talent to challenge to league crown

Losing starters like point guard Sam Schmidt, shooting guard Isaiah Roepe, power forward Jon Foster and wing Nolan Peters would usually mean a rebuilding season for Monte Pitsch at Saint Paul. Instead, this could be an even better year for the Saints, who return five quality players who started all season or at least some games during their 21-5 campaign in 20122013. Still, replacing the production and leadership will be a challenge. Schmidt averaged 8.0 (PPG) points, 4.0 (APG) assists and 2.0 (SPG) steals per game. Roepe averaged 8.0 PPG. Foster finished with 6.0 PPG and 3 RPG. Peters averaged 3.0 PPG. “Sam was a good floor general,” Pitsch, who is entering his 13th season as the head coach, said. “Isaiah was a good perimeter shooter who could really stretch the defense. “Nolan was a good role player and defender. Jon was a good threat inside and outside.” The Saints still will have three seniors, including two who earned all-conference recognition, in their starting lineup. Back are 6-foot-5 senior post Gerhard von zur Muehlen, 6-2 guard Elijah Rodewald and 5-11 guard Michael Nebel. The other starters could be 6-1 junior guard Peter Lemmons and 6-4 junior forward Eric Allen. As a junior, von zur Muehlen averaged 10.9 PPG and 4.0 RPG. “He is athletic and a good shot blocker,” Pitsch said. “He needs to get healthy after football season.” Rodewald averaged 9.9 PPG and 2.0 SPG. “Elijah is athletic, a good play maker and a good shooter,” Pitsch, who is being assisted by Jim Dahlke and Clint Stuenkel, said. However, Rodewald “took a nasty fall this fall and is nursing a wrist injury,” Pitsch said. Pitsch said Lemmons (3.2 PPG) has a lot “Good Luck to all area teams!!”

of potential and is a good perimeter shooter and finisher. “Michael (2.2 PPG) really played well down the stretch last year,” Pitsch said. “He’s a good shooter who also needs to get healthy after football season. “Eric (2.5 PPG) is athletic and a good inside and outside player.” The bench, at least ot the outset of the season will look like: •5-9 junior guard Simon Schmidt; •6-3 senior post Sam Hargrave; •6-4 junior post James Foster; •6-2 senior post Eric Leung. “We will probably bring up some other kids later in the season after we get a good chance to look at them,” Pitsch said. “We have some other talented players who may be first- or second-year players who need to get comfortable with our system before we use them.”
Pitsch said Rodewald and Nebel will run the point. “In the half-court offense, Elijah will probably run the point,” Pitsch said. “I like his playmaking ability and his decision making. He has good size for a point guard. “Michael has a lot of experience playing point guard, and we won’t hesitate to let him run it.” Those two also will fill the void at shooting guard when not playing the point. “Both players are experienced and good shooters,” Pitsch said. “Both played at a high level after an injury to Isaiah.” Pitsch also said Simon Schmidt also could fill in at either the point or shooting guard. Lemmons, Allen and Leung will be forwards. “Peter is a strong, athletic kid who is a good, long defender,” Pitsch said. “Eric has
played guard for several years, but we are going to move him to forward because of his size and athleticism.” With two good back-to-back seasons behind him, von zur Muehlen is more than just an athlete. “He is developing into a good post player,” Pitsch said. “James Foster is a good, physical player who might get a lot of playing time with Gerhard healing. I like James’ physical presence in the paint.” The Saints, who were second at 6-1 to 70 Wellington in the final I-70 Conference standings, have a roster of 21, including six seniors, seven juniors and three sophomores. Pitsch said this is one of the more athletic teams he has had at Saint Paul. “We need to get healthy, stay healthy and develop our bench,” he said.

Losing top-notch seniors such as Andrew Curry and Chad Tieman, it might be a tall order for eighth-year head coach Travis Zahl to get the Santa Fe Chiefs back to the top of the I-70 Conference heap in 2013-2014. Curry and Tieman, both I-70 Conference first-team selections, provided the bulk of the Chiefs’ scoring and rebounding a year ago when they were 17-11 overall. Tieman paced the team, which averaged 57.5 points per game, in scoring at 14.1 points per game (PPG). He also contributed 6.9 rebounds per game (RPG). Curry was the second-leading scorer at 12.1 PPG. But he led the team in rebounds at 8.4 per game, assists at 3.7 per game and steals with 2.7 per contest. Zahl, who is being assisted by Andrew Smith, does have the luxury of three starters returning, including 6-foot tall senior guard Keaton Graf, who averaged 9.8 PPG, 4.6 RPG, 2.0 APG and 1.6 SPG. Also returning as starters are 6-2 junior forward Truman Sleeper (7.1 PPG, 3.9 RPG, 1.6 APG, 1.0 SPG) and 5-9 sophomore guard Ben Hinz (7.8 PPG, 3.9 RPG, 2.6 APG, 1.1 SPG). “The guard position is going to be our biggest strength,” Zahl said. “We’ll have a number of kids who can shoot the ball well.” The Chiefs also will be buoyed by the return of 5-10 senior forward Gavin Bargfrede and 6-1 junior forward Ty Bell as players with varsity experience. “They’ll have to play physically and help out with rebounding,” Zahl said of the team’s forwards. Tim Nienhueser is a 6-4 junior post player who could help out. “The posts have worked very hard in the off-season and will surely contribute,” Zahl said. The Chiefs, who were third in the conference at 5-2 in 2012-13, have a roster of 21, including four seniors, four juniors and five sophomores. “Zahl said quickness and ball-handling ability will be strengths of the team, while lack of size will be a negative.

With three starters returning, including two who made first-team all-conference last year, the Sweet Springs Greyhounds could be in a position to challenge for the I-70 Conference title this year. Tim Smith, who is entering his 16th year as the Greyhounds’ mentor, is hopeful the solid play of his team continues in 2013-14. Jacob Schowengerdt, a 6-foot-3 senior and three-year starter, paced the Greyhounds, 3-4 in the league and 18-9 overall, in scoring and assists, averaging 21 points per game (PPG) and 3.5 assists per game (APG). He also pulled down 5.0 rebounds per game (RPG). Jeffery Hall is a 6-3 senior also was highly productive, averaging 14 PPG, 7.0 RPG and 1.5 APG. Hall has started each of the last two years. Andrew Krause is a 6-0 junior shooting guard who averaged 3.0 PPG, 2.0 RPG and 1.0 APG. Other starters look to include 57 senior shooting forward Nathan Vogelsmeier and 5-10 senior center Zach Weber. Smith, who is being assisted by Brent Niemeyer, said Krause is one of the team’s top defenders. “(Vogelsmeier) is our quickest player and one of our top defenders,” Smith said. “He was our sixth

man last year and has really improved offensively.” Smith said Weber is undersized in the post “but plays bigger than he is. He is very quick and a very good defender.” The Greyhounds, who averaged 59.6 points per game, will be helped off the bench by 5-9 junior guard Austin Boland and 6-1 junior post Trevor Phillips. “(Austin) is very quick. He is a good on-ball defender and has improved offensively,” Smith said. “(Phillips) is a hard worker and good finisher around the basket. The Greyhounds won the Leeton Tournament and were third in the conference tournament and fourth in the New Franklin Invitational last year. Smith points to having a lot of experience as a strength, as well as having a lot of good shooters. He says developing a winning mentality the players had last year also is a plus, along with having good size. The lack of depth could be a negative. The Greyhounds lost Matt Harris, Spencer Thomas, Derrick Nelson and Adam Martin off of last year’s squad. “We feel that this is going to be one of our better teams at Sweet Springs,” Smith said. “We have all the makings for what could be a very good season, if we can stay healthy.”

Stepping in to take over the Crest Ridge Cougars’ basketball program is Flip Courter. The Cougars are coming off a year where they were 1-6 in the I-70 Conference and 11-15 overall. Gone from that squad are full-time starters Taylor Nagel, Hayden Stringer and Jake Brookshier, as well as sixth man and part-time starter Kyler Reynolds. Nagel was the team’s leading scorer, averaging 13.0 (PPG) points per game. He paced the team in rebounding at 8.5 (RPG) rebounds per game. He also added 1.3 (SPG) steals per game. Stringer finished with 9.7 PPG, 2.9 RPG, 3.8 (APG) assists per game and 2.0 SPG, Brookshier 5.8 PPG and 7.0 RPG, Reynolds 1.4 PPG and 2.5 RPG. Cole Heckadon also is gone, and he averaged 7.2 PPG, 1.6 RPG, 1.9 APG and 2.1 SPG. Courter, who was the head coach at Lexington during 2006-2010 and at Odessa during 2010-2012, is hopeful the return of 5foot-8 senior guard Austin Bestgen (6.4 PPG, 3.3 RPG, 1.7 APG, 1.2 SPG) and 5-7 sophomore guard Justin Donald (4.4 PPG, 3.4 RPG, 1.0 APG) will be positives. “(Austin) is a good ballhandler, driver and probably our strongest defender on the ball,” Courter said.
“Justin is a good rebounder and can play inside or outside.” The Cougars also have other experience returning in 5-6 sophomore guard Garrett Hoeper (2.5 PPG, 1.2 RPG, 1.0 APG), 6-2 senior forward Andrew Stockton and 5-10 sophomore guard/forward Noah McCune. “Garrett is a very quick slasher and (good) shooter,” Courter said. “”Andrew gives us a little size inside. “Noah is a decent shooter and can finish inside.” Others who could get playing time include 5-3 sophomore guard Connor English, 5-10 senior guard Brandon Erisman and 5-11 senior guard Dallas Hoffman. “Connor is a very heady player, one of the smartest guys on the team,” Courter said. “Brandon is a good ball handler, tough defender and will compete for our point-guard spot. “Dallas is a slasher who is strong around the basket and can hit the three-point shot.” Also available might be 5-8 freshman guard Zach Ikerd, 6-1 freshman forward Kevin Robbins and 6-1 freshman forward Austin Summitt. “Zach is smart and is a good mid-range player,” Courter said. “Kevin is athletic but raw. He can step outside. “Austin has good length and is a decent shooter.”
Courter, a 1997 graduate of North Daviess High School (Jameson) and a 2001 Missouri Western State College graduate, feels his team can be strong at the point. “We have three guys I feel comfortable having the ball in their hands,” Courter said. “They’re all smart about getting people and the ball where it needs to go.” He said the Cougars’ shooting guards are better at getting to the basket than shooting outside. “If we can hit some outside shots with consistency, that will really open us up for our driving, which is something we’re going to look to do a lot,” Courter said. Courter said the Cougars’ forwards, due to their lack of size, will have to be able to step away from the basket and knock down some shots. “They all can put it on the floor. But they’re going to have to learn to finish in the paint with contact,” Courter said. With lots of new faces, Courter knows it will not be easy. “Our success is going to be predicated on how well we are able to negate our lack of size,” he said. “If we execute what we want to do using our quickness and speed, I think we can have a good season.” Overall, Courter will have a roster of 20, including five seniors, two juniors and six sophomores.
Shannon to replace 4 starters at WNHS by Hobby King SPORTS EDITOR
It will be almost a total rebuilding job for Todd Shannon at Wellington. After leading the Tigers to a Class 1 quarterfinal-round berth in the state playoffs last year, Shannon is hopeful the Tigers can remain competitive, losing four starters. Gone from the team that finished the season 22-7 overall and won the I-70 Conference regular-season crown at 7-0 are Christian Bryant, Brandon Niendick, Brett Schaberg, Blake Brockmeyer, Jake Ruskey and Jacob Beckemeyer. That list of players accounted for over 80 percent of the Tigers’ production. Bryant, a first-team all-conference pick, led the team in scoring at 20.9 points per game (PPG), rebounding at 7.6 rebounds per game (RPG), assists at 3.0 assists per game (APG) and steals at 3.0 steals per game (SPG). Niendick also was a vital cog, averaging 11.3 PPG, 3.1 RPG, 2.9 APG and 2.3 SPG.
Schaberg contributed 5.9 PPG, 4.7 RPG. 1.4 APG and 1.6 SPG and Brockmeyer 3.4 PPG and 2.4 RPG. Beckemeyer chipped in 5.6 PPG, 3.8 RPG and 1.0 SPG and Ruskey 3.7 PPG, 2.6 RPG and 1.4 APG. Shannon has one returning starter in 5-foot-6 junior point guard Levi Banner, who averaged 8.0 PPG, 2.2 RPG, 2.5 APG and 1.7 SPG. Shannon also is counting on 6-0 senior guard Jared Mershon (3.7 PPG, 1.7 RPG, 1.0 APG, 1.1 SPG), 6-4 junior forward Drew Bunch (1.4 PPG), 6-1 junior guard Alex Rodenberg (2.5 PPG) and 6-0 junior forward Aaron Schuster (4.0 PPG, 2.3 RPG) to step up their play and into starting roles. “This team will be very quick on the offensive and defensive ends of the floor,” Shannon said. “We should have about eight to 10 guys who can contribute nightly.”
Shannon said there are 20 players vying for positions. “I’m looking forward to getting started with these guys,” he said. “We had a good summer, and I think they will be a surprising team.”

Schrock to lead youthful Mules onto court

Levi Schrock spent one year as the head coach for the Orrick Bearcats, now he is the head coach at Lone Jack, taking over for Justin Smith. In 2011-2012, the Bearcats suffered through a 0-25 campaign with Schrock pulling the strings. He is hopeful the 201314 Lone Jack Mules can be more competitive coming
off a season where they were 2-5 in the I-70 Conference and 6-19 overall. He may have the tools to do just that as the Mules only lost Aaron Feehan as a starter from last year. Cole Shope, a 5-foot-9 senior guard, 5-9 junior guard Nick Kirk, 6-0 sophomore forward Joey Brandon and 5-8 sophomore guard Devon Deines. Leading that list of returning starters in scoring is Nick Kirk at 9.3 points per
game. “He’s a tough kid who could move up to a leader role this year,” Schrock said. Brandon at 8.8 points per game is the Mules’ secondleading scorer returning. He also paced the team in rebounding with 10.1 boards per contest. Deines, who is slated to play the point, put up 4.8 points and dished out 2.0 assists per contest. Shope averaged 4.1

Tanner Werle, a 5-9 junior point/shooting guard put up four points and three rebounds per game. The Bearcats return their leading scorer and rebounder in 6-2 senior forward Mason Karnes. This will be his fourth year as a starter, and he averaged 10 points and 9.0 boards per game last year. Jake Jennings, a 5-10 senior post, who averaged two points and three caroms per game off the bench last year could step into one of the starting spots. “He was hurt in the beginning of the year, but he’s a great defensive player and will be a nice leader for us,” McMahon said. Cody Sparks, a 5-10 senior post who McMahon said is a “great leader,” also earned some valuable minutes on the varsity level last year. “With Lane moving, we will be looking for a new
guard to contribute for us,” McMahon said. “More importantly, he must take care of the ball for us.” McMahon said he expects Werle to step up and make the open jump shot this year. “My two most-experienced guys (Mason and Tanner) should be my biggest point and rebound contributors,” McMahon said. He said the team has plenty of experience and leadership but must improve its ball handling and limit turnovers. “We need to take care of the ball and play the entire game, not just certain quarters.” He also is hopeful the Bearcats improve as the season progresses. “Now that these young men have had me for a year, they understand my expectations and philosophies,” McMahon said. “As long as our focus and dedication are there, I expect this season to be a season that we find success that hasn’t been found for a while.”
Bearcats coming off winless season

Jared McMahon is back for his second season as the head coach for the Orrick Bearcats. He is hopeful the Bearcats will be more competitive this year after going winless in 25 starts last year. The Bearcats have a roster of 18 players, including seven seniors, four juniors and two sophomores. Kendall Kelley and point guard Lane Harris, who moved to another town, are gone off of last year’s squad. “Kendall was our post player who really came around toward the end of the year,” McMahon said. “He will be missed on defense and his leadership. “Lane saw the floor well and could hit the open shot.” McMahon, a 2007 graduate of Rock Port High School and a 2011 graduate of Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, is happy about having three quality starters and two sub-
points per game. “He’s a very good defender with 2.5 steals per game,” Schrock said. Schrock, a 2002 graduate of Sherwood High School and a 2008 graduate of the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg, said he will have a very young team. “Two freshmen will be involved,” he said. “Justin Moore and Jacob Ewing will only get better.” The Mules will sport a
roster of 26 players, including four seniors, three juniors and nine sophomores. Schrock, who is being assisted by Grant Brown, said the guard position will be the team’s strength. “We are a very small team and will need our guards to step up to the challenges,” Schrock said. “We won’t really have a true post. As of now, we will start one kid who is over 6-feet tall.” Schrock said speed will
be his team’s strength. “If we can be disciplined enough, then that will help,” Schrock said. “We are very small. If we match up against a big team, we will (have) to outwork them in all aspects of the game.” He said the Mules will have to work very hard on every possession. We cannot afford to beat ourselves,” Schrock said. “We have to control the game and limit unnecessary turnovers.”

Losing all five starters to graduation, the 2013-2014 season for the second-year head coach Susie Vandevender could be a season of rebuilding at Concordia. Gone are four-year starter Hailee Langkrahr (16 points, 11 rebounds, four steals, three assists per game), Katlin Murray (11 PPG, 4.0 RPG), Kayla Brackman (7.0 PPG, 4.0 RPG), Staci Schlueter (4.0 PPG, 4.0 RPG) and Dakota Miller (7.0 PPG, 5.0 RPG, 3.0 SPG before being injured and out for the season after 13 games). Vandevender, who is being assisted by former CHS boys’ head coach Brent Cooper, does have some players back with experience on the varsity level. On that list are seniors Cassidy Brockman, Kayla Sinclair and Emily Blankenship. “Cassidy will play the Nos. 1 and 2 positions and handle the ball more than she did last year,” Vandevender said. “She is working on her ball handling , dribble-drives and shooting. Her big assets are her quickness and speed on defense. “Kayla is fast and smart out on the court. She is working on her shooting, both (from the) wings and three-pointers. “Emily is a good rebounder and is working on running the floor.” Also earning some valuable playing time last year are junior Kayla Stuart, sophomore Cailey Cooper and sophomore Ellison Brunkhorst. “Kayla is a very hard-working athlete who plays great defense, always giving 100 percent,” Vandevender said. “She does great communicating and talking on the court. “(Cailey) has a great shot and can handle the ball with her head up and look for teammates down the court. She also plays smart defense and gets several tips. “We are working with (Ellison) on posing up, asking for the ball and making a move to the basket. She is working on her ball handling and shots from the wings,” Vandevender said. “Gloria is improving her defense and rebounding, working her at both guard and post. She has a great first step and drive to the basket.” Senior Taylor Borgstadt sat out last year, but has decided to play this year. “Taylor is strong and runs the court well,” Vandevender said. “She is working on learning my system and all of the new plays I have incorporated.” Sophomore Christa Curtis also could get some minutes. “She has improved her game so much, due mostly to her off-season work.” Vandevender said. Vandevender knows replacing five starters will be difficult. “We have to play together as a team and

Beerman enters 20th season as Lady Saints’ mentor

Losing two starters, including the school’s second-leading all-time scorer, and top three reserves will make this season a challenge for John Beerman at Saint Paul. Beerman, who is entering his 20th season as the head coach has been through similar circumstances before, but this will be even more challenging in that they also have lost seniors Sydney Bredehoeft and Alyssa Hamblen to knee injuries and will not be available all season. Gone from last year are Marrissa Brackman, who averaged 12 points per game (PPG) as a senior, and Devon Heins (8.5 PPG). Both were first-team all-I-70 selections in 2012-13. Leah Hoffmann, Nicole Mueller and Logan Burrow also are gone off the bench. There are positives, like the return of starters Breanna Vogelsmeier, Rebecca Roepe and Tiffany Bennett. Vogelsmeier, a 5-foot-7 senior, while learning the post position last year, averaged 4.0 PPG and 5.0 rebounds per game (RPG). Roepe is a 5-10 junior who “is a really quick leaper,” Beerman said. She averaged about 9.0 PPG and over 8.0 RPG. Bennett, a 5-6 junior who averaged more than 8.0 PPG, is slated to be the team’s point guard. “She was our second-leading assist person last year,” Beerman, who is being assisted by Eric Gramenz and Meredith Marsh, said. As a sophomore last year, 5-6 Madison Pitsch came off the bench to hit some crucial shots and averaged 4.0 PPG. “She runs the floor well, is a good defender and is a head’s-up intelligent player,” Beerman said. Gabby Kueck and Rebecca Schultz managed to get some playing time last year. But I’m confident the girls will adjust and play hard.”

Graduating only one senior off a team that went 15-12, the Santa Fe Lady Chiefs could challenge for the I-70 Conference title in 2013-2014. The Lady Chiefs were 3-4 in league play last season. The only starter coach Jeremy Hobbs, who is in his sixth year, lost was Brandy Beasley, who averaged 5.5 points (PPG) and 4.5 rebounds (RPG) per game. Back are the team’s top three leading scorers and top two rebounders. Returning for her senior season is Brooke Barnett. As a junior, Barnett pumped in 10.3 PPG and pulled down 3.4 RPG. She also contributed 1.4 assists (APG) and 2.8 steals (SPG) per game. Juniors Lexi Smith, Kourtney Chiddix and Katey Peters are back as starters. Smith averaged 9.5 PPG, 8.0 RPG, 1.2 APG and 2.9 SPG. Chiddix put up the following numbers: 3.2 PPG, 3.5 RPG, 1.4 APG and 2.1 SPG. Peters had these numbers: 1.8 PPG, 2.2 RPG, 2.5 APG and 1.9 SPG. Although not listed as a returning starter, sophomore Kylie Limback was a force to be reckoned with last season. She led the team in scoring with 12.7 PPG. She also pulled down 6.5 RPG and had 2.4 SPG. Limback was dominant, at times, in the post, where she will play again. “She’s athletic and a little raw, but she will definitely put in the reps needed for skill development,” Hobbs said. “She must improve on defense, which all of our underclassmen do.” Others who earned varsity playing time were seniors Morgan Bishop, Tristan Sowers and Ashalin Gipe and sophomores Courtney Bishop, Lauren Wiggins, Maleigh Limback and Kenzie Phillips. “Good Luck to All Area Teams!!”

Hobbs, who is being assisted by Ashton Sander, said the Lady Chiefs are blessed to have even more players who could step up if needed. “We have several newcomers in our freshman and sophomore classes,” he said. “These young ladies will add needed competition to every practice and every workout we have from the first day until the last.” Peters returns as the team’s point guard. “She sets a great pace and has improved her ball-handling ability,” Hobbs said. “She continues to work on her shot, is a great defender and has good court vision.” Hobbs knows his team must improve its outside shooting, hitting only 40 percent of its two-point and 19 percent of its three-

point shots last year. “We haven’t been a great shooting team and still will need thousands of shots put up in the early season and throughout the year to improve on this.” He is looking to Morgan Bishop, Chiddix, Smith and Maleigh Limback to give the team a boost from outside. Sowers and Courtney Bishop will be able to spell Kylie Limback in the paint. “(Courtney Bishop) will become more of an impact player with increased reps,” Hobbs said. Hobbs said the Lady Chiefs, who sport a roster of 20—including four seniors, three juniors and nine sophomores—will use their ath-
leticism to be “more protective of the basket than we’ve ever been.” But the Lady Chiefs will have to take better care of the ball. “We still turn the ball over in bunches and have to limit those key mistakes,” Hobbs said. He said it will take teamwork and commitment to the task at hand to have a successful season. “Our offensive contributors need to perform with consistency and value the basketball each possession,” Hobbs said.

Jones retuns to lead Lady Greyhounds

Boyd Jones stepped away from the head coach position of the Sweet Springs Lady Greyhounds after the 2009-2010 season. Now he’s back. Jones returns after the three-year hiatus with renewed passion to lead the Lady Greyhounds. The Lady Greyhounds, coming off a 14-12 overall record and 2-5 mark in the I-70 Conference, under the direction of Ben Hays, return an abundance of talent, including three starters. Junior Nicole Bright and senior Christina Higgins will be the leaders close to the basket. Bright, a 5-foot-10 wing, was second on the team in scoring at 11 points per game. But she paced the squad in boards with 9.3 rebounds per game. Higgins, a 5-8 post, was a handful for defenses, averaging a team-
best 12.9 PPG and pulled down 7.8 RPG. Also returning as a starter at a wing is 5-3 senior Kati Viets, who Jones said also will play some at the point. Viets contributed 6.5 PPG, 5.4 RPG and 2.2 assists per game. Ashleigh Bright, a 5-10 post, also returns with valuable experience gained from the varsity level a year ago. She averaged 5.6 PPG and 4.0 RPG. Also returning as varsity contributors are 5-3 junior wing/point Megan Evans and 5-9 junior wing Olivia Loges. “We will be physical and good defensively,” Jones, who accumulated a 123-115 overall record as Lady Greyhounds’ mentor during 2001-10, said. “We will rebound well, and we have four players with at least a full year of major minutes. “I have been very pleased with our practice habits. The girls are eager to learn and improve.” Jones, who is 392-348 overall as
a head coach, is hopeful players like 5-7 sophomore post Miranda Tyler, 5-4 sophomore wing/point Kortnee Vaught and 5-4 freshman wing/point Tori Hinton will be able to step in and contribute. “They are very athletic, but they are young and inexperienced,” Jones, who is being assisted by Brian King, said. “Our season will be helped or hindered by how fast the young players start reaching their potential, which is very high.” The Lady Greyhounds lost three valuable players to graduation. Gone are Rebecca Tyler (3.0 PPG, 1.6 RPG, 3.2 APG), Mikalah Vogelsmeier (5.6 PPG, 5.1 RPG, 2.5 APG) and defensive specialist Ashlyn Schlatweiler.

Heading into her sixth season as Crest Ridge Lady Cougars head coach, Katie Woolsey knows she must fill some huge voids left by the graduation of point guard Melodi Branscum and post Breanna Wonderly. Both were special players — four-year starters, each scoring more than 1,000 points in her career. In the 2012-2013 season, Wonderly averaged 14 (PPG) points and 6.0 rebounds (RPG) per game. Branscum added 13 PPG, 4.0 assists (APG) and 3.0 steals (SPG) per game. Also needing to be replaced is starting guard/forward Kaitlyn Francy who averaged 5.0 RPG. The cupboard is not barren, however. The Lady Cougars re-
turn a talented duo in Kennedy Dick, a 5-foot-6 senior guard/forward and 5-10 sophomore post Lily Hunter. “(Kennedy) brings a lot of experience and knowledge to our team,” Woolsey, who is being assisted by former Concordia Lady Orioles head coach Ken Holland, said. “(Lily) is a strong post player with the ability to finish around the basket.” Last season, Hunter averaged 10 PPG and 5.0 RPG. There are four others who offer Woolsey some varsity experience. •Whitney Hutcherson is a 5-7 junior guard who is “an excellent defender and has improved her offensive skills,” Woolsey said. •Kaylee Schmidli is a 5-8 sophomore guard. “She is a smart player with a basketball mind,” Woolsey said. “She also has a good shot.”
•Jamie Windholtz is a 5-7 sophomore guard/forward. “She is an aggressive player with the ability to make plays on both ends of the court,” Wolsey said. •Mikayla Sivils is a 57 junior post. Others who will need to be able to step up and play some minutes include 5-9 sophomore post Megan VanHarn, 5-2 junior guard Kelsie Seaman, 5-6 junior guard/forward Addy Marshall and 5-4 freshman guard Timber Erisman. Woolsey said the Lady Cougars have good overall team speed and play good defense. “We need to learn and improve every day,” she said. “We need to gain experience and knowledge with each game.” Overall, Woolsey has a roster of 20, including one senior, five juniors and six sophomores.

Coming off a season in which his team went 25-4 overall and tied for the top spot in the I-7 Conference at 6-1 with Saint Paul, sixthyear head coach Andy Hampton is hopeful the Wellington Lady Tigers don’t miss a beat. That might be a little difficult, especially considering the Lady Tigers lost leading scorer and rebounder Katie Kropp and
scorer second-leading Kayla Thompson along with other starters Mikayla Seitz, Rhiannon Welsh and Taylor West. “These five girls put our program where it needed to be,” Hampton said. Kropp averaged 13.1 (PPG) points, 5.8 (RPG0 rebounds, 1.4 (APG) assists and 2.2 (SPG) steals per game. Thompson came in at 10.9 PPG,3.4 RPG, 1.7 APG and 3.0 SPG. Seitz finished averaging 5.3 PPG, 4.8 RPG, 1.6 APG
and 1.5 SPG, Welsh 4.0 PPG, 3.3 RPG, 1.9 APG and 1.3 SPG and West 3.1 PPG, 1.8 RPG and 1.8 SPG. Hampton, who is being assisted by Heather Felix, still has some talent returning in 6-1 junior center Mikayla Lohsandt, who led the team in blocked shots (61) at 2.1 per game, (5.2 PPG, 6.7 RPG), 5-9 junior forward Madison Thornburg (3.7 PPG, 3.5 RPG, 1.7 SPG), 5-3 junior point guard Jennifer Rodgers (2.4 (See WNHS on page 15)

With only one starter returning, the first year as a head coach could be a challenge for Susie Hurlock at Lone Jack. The Lady Mules, coming off a season in which they were 14-13 overall and 3-4 in the I-70 Conference, return 5-foot-9 senior guard/ forward Courtney Osborn as the lone starter. However, Osborn was a top-notch performer, averaging 19.3 points (PPG), 6.3
rebounds (RPG), 3.5 assists (APG) and 4.2 steals (SPG). The Lady Mules also return 5-9 junior guard/forward Reese Radmacher, a prime contributor off the bench, averaging 4.7 PPG, 3.6 RPG, 1.6 APG and 1.1 SPG. Others on the varsity roster include 5-6 senior forward Emily Carmack, 5-4 junior guard Samantha Sword and 5-5 junior forward Lydia Becvar. Losing only part-time starter Makayla Easley to graduation, Mitch Comstock’s Orrick Lady Bearcats could be one of the favorites to win the I-70 Conference this season. Although the Lady Bearcats were only 13-13 overall, they were 5-2 in the league. Easley averaged 3.1 (PPG) points, 1.6 (RPG) rebounds and 1.2 (SPG) steals per game. The Lady Bearcats are loaded with talent, including the return of four-year starting guard Madison Winters, who paced the team in every offensive category. She put up 16.2 PPG, pulled down 7.2 RPG, dished out 1.4 (APG) assists per game and had 2.7 (SPG) steals per game.

Second-year starter Sam Fulte will provide needed help at the forward position. She averaged 12.2 PPG, 4.4 RPG, 1.2 APG and 1.1 SPG. “Sam played a lot as a freshman but really stepped into a starting role last year,” Comstock, who is in his 10th year, said. “We are expecting her to have a great year.” Shaina Cook (3.2 PPG, 2.9 RPG, 1.4 APG, 1.2 SPG) is a three-year starter back at guard. “Shaina is a tremendous defensive player who has continued to improve her offense every year,” Comstock sid. She brings great energy to the game and is a tremendous defender.” Sophomore Hannah Thurnau also will provide some depth off the bench. “Hannah has a non-stop work ethic,” Comstock said. “She makes up for being an undersized post by outworking her op-
ponents and being fundamentally sound.” Freshman Madison Fulte also could provide some relief at forward. “Madison is a good athlete whose skill level is starting to catch up to her athleticism,” Comstock said. Comstock is sky high about this season. “We have a ton of experience,” he said. “Our top six girls have played/started for at least three years, with most of them playing varsity for four.” He said the weakness could be depth with a bench of three for most varsity games. “We have to win the battle on the boards,” he said. “If we out-rebound our opponents, we should have a good year.” Overall, the Lady Bearcats number 18 on the roster, including five seniors, one junior and seven sophomores.
The Lady Tigers have a roster of 16, including one senior, seven juniors and one sophomore. “We will need to stay focused on the task at hand and know our roles,” Hampton said.
