Graduation hits Concordia Orioles hard by Hobby King Concordian sports editor The Concordia Orioles of 2011 were just a feather away from advancing to the Class 1 state championship game in the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis. They led the defending state champion Valle Catholic Warriors 6-0 at halftime on the road in Ste. Genevieve in the semifinal round. But the Orioles’ offense, which had produced a state-record 764 points, could not dent the scoreboard in the second half, Valle Catholic scored two second-half touchdowns, en route to a 14-6 heartcrushing defeat. That ended the careers of 12 Concordia seniors, including their four leading rushers, their leading passer, their top five receivers and three of their five offensive linemen. Similar decimation has happened to a staunch defensive unit that surrendered only 146 points. The 12-2 overall record, including 6-1 in the I-70 Conference, are history. And so is the fine work done by John Cox, who after six years at the helm has moved on to be the head coach of the Knob Noster Panthers. In steps Tom Gramates to be the head coach. Gramates has spent the last six years as the offensive coordinator at Warsaw. Gramates has been a head coach at three different schools, including a threeyear stint at Mark Twain in Center, leading the Pirates to their first-ever district crown. He also spent 1993-99 at Montgomery County High School in Montgomery City, leading his team to two EMO Conference crowns and two district titles. While at Montgomery County, he won the award for being the Northeast Missouri Coach of the Year in 1993, ’97 and ’99. He also spent from 2000-04 as the head coach at Clinton High School.

process will be key to our success.” DEFENSE (3-4) In the 3-4 alignment, the Orioles will more likely start Smith and Foster at the defensive ends. A year ago, Smith had 17 tackles, including two for a loss. Foster had five tackles, one-half a sack, three tackles for loss and three fumble recoveries. Brown will anchor the line at nose guard. He was a big part of last year’s defense, accumulating 43 tackles, four sacks and 13 tackles for loss. Heimsoth and Caldwell are slated to be the starters at outside linebacker. Heimsoth Caldwell had 14 tackles, one sack and one tackle for a loss. Meyer and Wilson are the leading candidates for the starting slots at corner back. Meyer has 12 tackles and Wilson 14 tackles and an interception last year. “Our linebackers are showing promise, but must prove themselves,” Gramates said. Hon is going to be the starter at strong safety. He was a bit of a ball hawk last year, intercepting four passes to go along with 17 tackles. Wade Nevels is slated to be the free safety. He had 17 tackles and one tackle for a loss last year. “The secondary is going to be tested, as

we lack experience,” Gramates said. OVERALL OUTLOOK Numbers are still high at Concordia. Depth should not be a problem to build. The Orioles have a roster that numbers 36, including 11 seniors, seven juniors and 11 sophomores. Losing the likes of Werths (10 receptions, 377 yards, six TDs) , Kapala (nine receptions, 200 yards, three TDs), Miller (five catches, 145 yards, one TD), Bushman, Jessy Otero (seven catches for 102 yards and three TDs) will be harder to replace. But with the Orioles dominating most of their opponents each of the past two seasons, it afforded Cox the opportunity to get just about every player on the field for at least some Friday-night experience. That could bode well for this version of the Orioles. Still, playing in a reserve role in a game that is out of hand doesn’t compare to playing from start to finish with everything on the line. Gramates will handle the offensive calls as the coordinator, with JK Basye returning to call the defense. Other names familiar to Concordia football also will be on the sideline as assistants in Drew Smith and Alic Frerking. Also stepping in as another assistant will be Kenny Smith.

OFFENSE (Pistol) The offense will be changing slightly, with junior Austin Hon taking over the signal-calling duties. In a relief role last year, Hon didn’t throw a pass, but he rushed for 216 yards and two touchdowns in 35 carries. He will be replacing Josh Bushman, who in his only year as a starter rushed for 418 yards and seven scores and completed 45.6-percent of his 103 passes for 1,184 yards and 19 TDs. Filling the shoes of Collin Werths (1,132 yards and 19 TDs), Dan Miller (736 yards, 14 TDs) and Luke Kapala (970 yards, 16 TDs) are going to be tall tasks, and taking on the roles of the ball carriers will be Cass Heimsoth and Cory Meineka. Meineka rushed for 95 yards and a touchdown last year. Kyle Wilson and Brian Meyer are slated to be the receivers. Wilson hauled in four passes for 121 yards and one TD in 2011. Playing without a tight end, all of the blocking duties will be handled by the offensive line, including returning starters Jarret Caldwell and Hayden Brown, making the left side of the line the most experienced. Caldwell plays left tackle and Brown left guard. The right side will be locked down by Blake Smith at tackle and Derrick Lindstrom at guard. Jordan Foster will be the center. Gramates says the Orioles still have talent. “We have the potential to have a solid offense,” he said. “The line is our strength, but we have very good skill players who have to prove themselves.” He said having a balanced attack between the pass and the run is going to determine the success level this team achieves. “Austin Hon will drive our offense,” Gramates said. “His decision-making

Four two-way starters gone for Saint Paul by Hobby King Concordian sports editor A year ago, a healthy Jon Foster led the Saint Paul Saints to a .500 record overall and 4-3 in the I-70 Conference. Head coach Larry Laubenstein, who is entering his 39th season, is hoping the Saints can take a step forward, and make a splash in their Class 2 district. Laubenstein is being assisted by Mark Steitz and Rob Tebbenkamp. OFFENSE (Wing-T) In 2010, the Saints suffered when Foster was injured and lost for the rest of the season in the fifth game. That was not the case for the team’s quarterback last year. Foster, a senior, excelled to be a dangerous double-threat signal caller. He passed for 1,115 yards, completing 51.1 percent of his 176 attempts. He tossed seven touchdown passes. Although his final statistics don’t show it, Foster is also a threat on the ground, often breaking containment, extending plays in which a more stationary quarterback would have been sacked. The backup quarterback is sophomore Peter Lemmons, who completed 10 of his 16 aerials for 83 yards in 2011. Senior Quentin Jones and sophomore Luke Stuenkel will be sharing time at the running-back spot. Jones played sparingly in a reserve role last year. But Stuenkel rushed 85

times for 308 yards, both team highs, as a freshman. He also caught two passes for 66 yards. Juniors Tim Mehl and Michael Nebel will be splitting time at fullback. Neither player carried the ball in 2011. Junior Gerhard von zur Muehlen is a weapon at Foster’s disposal at split end. In 2011, the 6-foot-4 receiver hauled in a teamhigh 35 passes for 313 yards. Junior Gabe Stumbaugh and sophomore Eric Allen are set to be the backups. Each had two catches last year. Mehl and Lemmons will share time in the slot, provided they aren’t at other spots. Stumbaugh, Allen and junior Jalen Timm are candidates for tight end. The skill-position players will have to replace the likes of Seth Dahlke, Aaron Hemme and Dylan Woodall. They combined to rush for 518 yards and caught 58 passes for 786 yards. With four of the five starters back up front, the line is one of the strengths of the team. Back are senior Matt Krater at right tackle, senior Aaron Hentges at right guard, senior Aaron Frerking at left guard and senior Isaiah Roepe at center. The only position along the front that will see somebody new is left tackle, where juniors Seth Muehler and James Foster are vying for the spot. Others in the mix for the offensive line are John Bredehoeft, John Brunkhorst and Aaron Page.

BEST OF LUCK TO ALL AREA TEAMS IN THE 2012 SEASON!!

“We have some good experience returning, Laubenstein said. “If we stay healthy, and hold onto the ball, we should be pretty solid. “Lack of depth at O-line may be a concern, but we’re working on it. DEFENSE (4-3 base) Hentges, Bredehoeft and Frerking are the top candidates to play the defensive ends. Frerking had 40 tackles and two fumble recoveries and Hentges 33 tackles and two sacks last year. Foster, Mehl, Nebel, Frerking and Stuenkel are in the running for the linebacker slots. Foster accumulated 39 tackles, two sacks, three fumble recoveries and two interceptions last year. Mehl had three tackles. Nebel had 16 tackles and one fumble recovery. Stuenkel totaled 57 tackles. Safeties are up for grabs between von zur Muehlen, Stuenkel, Stumbaugh, Yanni Leung and Lemmons. With his 47 tackles, von zur Muehlen earned second-team allconference in 2011. A year ago, von zur Muehlen accumulated 31 tackles. Stumbaugh had four tackles. Lemmons recorded nine tackles. Jones, Allen, Nebel and Stumbaugh will be the top candidates to fill the cornerback slots. “The strength will be the secondary,

Laubenstein said. “We’ll need to concentrate on improving our run defense. Special Teams The Saints lost John Traczewski as the punter, but they have Foster back as the team’s kicker. Lemmons will step in at and assume the punting duties. OVERALL OUTLOOK The Saints improved their scoring in 2011 to 21.4 points per game. But they gave up 25.4 points per game. With the losses of players such as Dahlke (who has moved on to play basketball at Central Methodist in Fayette), Woodall (who has moved on to play fullback at Westminster, an NCAA Division III school in Fulton), Hemme and Traczewski, it will be tough for the Saints to improve. That doesn’t mean it won’t happen because there are athletes capable of competing at a high level. “We lost four very good seniors, Laubenstein said. “They played both ways for us and will be sorely missed. Dahlke earned second-team all-conference on the defensive line and honorable mention as a wide receiver last year. Hemme was a second-team receiver and linebacker. Traczewski was a second-team offensive lineman and honorable mention as a defensive lineman. The Saints also are victimized by the 1.5 multiplier for private schools, thus being pushed up to play in Class 2 when it comes time for district.

THE CONCORDIAN, Concordia, Missouri, Wednesday, August 22, 2012 — PAGE 9

Bodenhamer returns to lead Santa Fe Chiefs by Hobby King Concordian sports editor After two straight Class 1 playoff appearances, sixth-year head coach Andy Frerking is hoping things are looking up at Santa Fe. But this year might be a little different as numbers have dwindled a bit. Still, the Chiefs have enough talented players returning on both sides of the ball to make this another successful season. They return a solid core of players, but they will be without the likes of 12 seniors who graduated, including all-conference players Dalton Wilkinson, Cody Schmidt, Ben Nienhueser, Andrew Smith and Andrew Vogel. The Chiefs, 7-4 overall (including a loss to Tipton in the Class 1 regional playoffs) and 4-3 in the I-70 Conference, will be counting on a number of players who earned some playing time last year to step up into starting roles. OFFENSE (Flexbone) Senior Matt Bodenhamer played a huge role in the Chiefs’ success of each of the past two years. He will be starting for the third year at quarterback. A year ago, Bodenhamer led the team in rushing with 563 yards and 14 scores. He also passed for 373 yards, completing 22 of 59 aerials, and four touchdowns. Just as important, he only threw four interceptions. With Schmidt and Wilkinson gone, so is the bulk of the other rushing yards. Schmidt rushed for 527 yards and three TDs and Wilkinson 441 yards and four TDs. Also gone is the fleet-footed Dakota Jones, who rushed for 258 yards and three scores. Alex Martinez steps into a full-time starting role at one of the running backs. He accumulated 277 yards and five touchdowns as a reserve in 2011. Lucas Miller and Ben Reeders are in the running to be part of the backfield, as well. Keaton Graf is stepping in to be the

tight end. “He has good size, and can be an allconference player,” Frerking said. Across the front line will be Manny Hernandez, Cole Wodrich, Chad Tieman, Tim Nienhueser and Ty Bell. “Three seniors who started last year are leaders of this group,” Frerking said. The key will be the offensive line. “Our offensive line must continue to improve, and we have a lot of unproven players,” Frerking said. “We have the potential to be effective, if we execute on offense.” DEFENSE (44) Hernandez, Tieman, Tim Nienhueser and Ryan Cox are the leading candidates for the defensive line’s four spots. Hernandez had 28 tackles and two tackles for loss last year. Tieman accumulated 31 tackles, four tackles for loss, one fumble recovery and two interceptions. Martinez, Graf, Reeders and Bell are in line to be the linebackers. Martinez always seemed to be around the ball last year, registering 112 tackles, two sacks, seven tackles for loss and two fumble recoveries. Bell had 14 tackles and four tackles for loss. “Run defense will be a key this year,” Frerking said. “(The linebackers) are the heart of our defense who will have to make plays in the run game for us to be effective.” The three deep backs are all-stater Bodenhamer , Hinz and Miller. A year ago, Bodenhamer had 57 tackles, one tackle for a loss, one fumble recovery and one interception. “This group has the potential to be outstanding,” Frerking said. “How we tackle will determine our success. “Bodenhamer leads this inexperienced group, but they should do a good job in pass coverage.”

Special Teams Frerking is counting on Wodrich as being the long-snapper. He also has a strong leg, as do Hernandez, Graf and Reeders. The kicker will come out of that group. OVERALL OUTLOOK Santa Fe’s numbers have dropped to 22 out for the sport. That includes six seniors, four juniors and two sophomores, which means that at least some of the 10 freshmen will have to step in at the varsity level at some point. But this team’s offense will go as Bodenhamer goes. If the offensive line comes together, Bodenhamer is elusive enough to make plays. He proved his value each of the last two years, leading the Chiefs to many big wins. Frerking, who is being assisted by Travis Zahl, Mark Dunbar and Brandon Struchtemeyer, will have to figure out who

will be the go-to back in the backfield, whether it’s Martinez or somebody else. Martinez, too, had flashes of brilliance last year, using his power and speed to gain yards. The Chiefs averaged a respectable 27.2 points per game on offense. But they will have to find replacements for the 11 touchdowns that were lost to graduation. On defense, the Chiefs allowed 257 points or 23.4 points per game. Those numbers are kind of skewed because they allowed 39 points in a shutout loss at Wellington, 61 in a 55-point loss at Concordia and 56 in the 42-point playoff loss at Tipton. There is room for the Chiefs to improve, but they must have younger players off of last year’s team to step up and assume the roles as starters. Plus, there may not be a lot of depth. Note: Individual statistics in this story do not include the game versus Tipton.

Baker enters second season at Sweet Springs

We've got you covered!

by Hobby King Concordian sports editor Back for a second season at Sweet Springs is Melvin Baker to lead the Greyhounds’ football team. Sweet Springs struggled most of the first season, finishing 1-6 in the I-70 Conference and 1-9 overall. The Greyhounds’ lone win was over Orrick. Baker, who is being assisted by Mike Staples, Cody Bashore and Frank Guthrie, must find replacements for graduated starters on both sides of the ball, including four-year, two-way starter Colby Dohrman, an all-conference offensive and defensive lineman. OFFENSE (Spread) In an offense like Baker employs, the quarterback must be able to produce, mostly through the air. The Greyhounds had some success in 2011, but they had trouble sustaining drives. Not out for the team this year, Jacob Schowengerdt completed 61 of 160 passes (31.1 percent) for 901 yards and three touchdowns. Stepping in to battle for the starting po-

sition are Jeffery Hall, who was second on the team in rushing with 130 yards a year ago, and Jeffery Dierker, who rushed for 78 yards. Hall was four of 16 for 56 yards and Dierker misfired on both of his pass attempts. “(We need the) quarterback throwing quickly to open routes,” Baker said. Nathan Vogelsmeier, Blake Koss, Heath Snider, Rhett Snider and Jeffrey Shikles will vie for receiving slots. Vogelsmeier hauled in 14 aerials for 256 yards and two scores last year. “We like to run quick, spread routes,” Baker said. Another of the skill-position players from a year ago not out for the team is Andrew Krause, who completed 12 of 26 passes for 171 yards. Trevor Harrison, Trevor Phillips, Derrick Nelson and Michael White are in the mix for the starting tight end. Nelson caught 12 passes for 203 yards and four TDs in 2011. Across the offensive line will be, Garrett Hollingsworth, Kyle Evans, Pepe Lozano, Thomas Dunkle and Jared Dillon. The only player out of that mix with var-

sity time is Lozano. A year ago, Baker’s offense produced 110 points or 11.0 points per game. DEFENSE (Cobra) The Greyhounds allowed 425 points or 42.5 points per game. That will need to be improved if they are to have a better record. Gone are such stalwarts as Jacob Barbee, Schowengerdt, Christian Stetzenbach, Krause, Dohrman, Brandon Evans, David Hostetter and Phillip Wattenbarger. Between them, they recorded all of the team’s 12 sacks. Starting at defensive ends will be Phillips and Harrison. The linemen will come from Hollingsworth, Evans and Lozano, who accumulated 12 tackles last year. Hall and Nelson will be the two linebackers. Hall registered 66 tackles, one fumble recovery and two interceptions. Nelson had 13 tackles. Vogelsmeier, Heath Snider, Dierker, Rhett Snider and Shikles are vying for the starting spots in the secondary. Vogelsmeier had 60 tackles, two fumble re-

coveries and one interception last year. Heath Snider added 11 tackles. Dierker registered 32 tackles. “We have to contain outside and have (100-percent) effort on every play,” Baker said. Special Teams The Greyhounds return Hall as the kicker and Nelson as the punter. OVERALL OUTLOOK The Greyhounds, whose 19-player roster includes three seniors, three juniors and six sophomores, must improve on both sides of the ball in order to get back to .500. It has been since 2008 that they have wound up a season at or above that level, winding up 6-5 after a gut-wrenching 13-12 loss at Cass-Midway in the sectional round of the state playoffs. But with so many seasoned starters either lost to graduation or simply not out for the team, that will be difficult. In order for the Greyhounds to improve, their offense will have to fire on all cylinders and their defense will have to provide enough stops to keep them close. Both are tall orders.

Cavanah has 32 out for football at Crest Ridge by Hobby King Concordian sports editor Crest Ridge has been taking baby steps each year Chris Cavanah has been at the helm. He is hopeful the Cougars can take a giant leap forward in 2012, improving upon their 4-6 overall and 2-5 I-70 Conference records in 2011. The Cougars had wins over Rich Hill and Albany outside the conference and I-70 wins over Orrick and Sweet Springs. Perhaps their most disappointing loss of the season was a 35-34 setback to Santa Fe in the first week of district play, which kept them out of the state playoffs for the sixth straight season. OFFENSE (Spread Formation) With five starters returning, and some others who have had some varsity experience, the Cougars could be better than they were a year ago when they posted a respectable 27.5 points per game. Ethan Matthews, a 6-foot tall, 170-pound senior, will be starting again after he earned honorable-mention all-conference status last year. He threw for 1,275 yards and 12 touchdowns and rushed for 346 yards and 11 more scores. “He is a dual-threat quarterback who will be a key to our offensive success,” Cavanah said. “He has to make great decisions with the football.” Justin Donald, a 5-8, 160-pound sopho-

more and 5-8, 165-pound junior Johnny McCannon will split time at the running-back position. “Justin has more speed. Johnny has more power,” Cavanah said. Hayden Stringer, a 5-8, 150-pound senior, whom Cavanah says is “probably the best athlete on our team,” returns as a starter at a receiver spot. “He has the ability to be an all-conference player,” Cavanah said. Cole Heckadon, a 5-8, 140-pound freshman, is in line for the other receiver spot. “He has great hands, and has shown he can compete,” Cavanah said. Taylor Nagel, a 6-0, 200-pound senior, is a returning starter at tight end. “He is a good blocker and has soft hands,” Cavanah said. “He will be a big part of our offense.” Perhaps as important as having Matthews back is the return of three starters up front. Back are 5-10, 190-pound senior Kyler Reynolds at left tackle, 6-0, 220-pound senior Jake Brookshier at left guard and 5-10, 170-pound junior Caleb Thomas at center. This will be Brookshier’s fourth year as a starter. Thomas will be moving from guard to center. “Jake will be the anchor of our line,” Cavanah said. “He is a smart player with a lot of experience. “Caleb is not very big, but he has great quickness.”

Proud Supporters Of Area Teams

Cavanah knows the front is going to have to do its job. “We have to be better at running the ball, getting the tough yards when we need them,” he said. “Our offensive line has to be able to take over the game.” DEFENSE (4-4) Reynolds, 5-11, 210-pound senior Sean Burns at defensive ends and Brookshier at nose guard return as starters to the line. The only newcomer to the front will be Arnold. “Sean is our strongest player who is a great weight-room guy. He has a lot of ability,” Cavanah said. “Russell is a strong kid who knows how to use his strength on the field.” Nagel is the only player returning who started every game at linebacker. He had a productive 2011 with 96 tackles, two interceptions (one returned for a touchdown) and nine fumble recoveries. Another player who could produce some big numbers at linebacker is Thomas, who started several games his first two seasons. Matthews, who started at linebacker last year, will be moved to a starter at corner back. Austin Bestgen, a 5-9, 160-pound junior will be the other starter. “Austin brings some speed to the secondary,” Cavanah said. Stringer will be moved from his starting position at linebacker last year to a starter at

free safety. “He’s probably the best athlete on our team,” Cavanah said. “He has the speed and ability to be an all-conference player.” Cavanah knows the Cougars are going to have to stop opponents’ ground game first. “That will put their offense in tough situations,” he said. Our defense has improved the last couple of years, but for us to have a winning record, and finish in the top half of the conference, defensively we have to play better. “The defensive line has to develop a mean streak and be disruptive.” SPECIAL TEAMS Burns will handle the kickoffs and punting duties. When there are field-goal and extra-point attempts, Cavanah will call on Reynolds. OVERALL OUTLOOK Cavanah, who is being assisted by Heath Heckadon, Cory Creason, Phillip Courter and Jake Vencill, will have a roster of 32 at his disposal. There will be five seniors, 10 juniors and four sophomores. If the lines do their job, giving Matthews time to operate as a dual-threat quarterback, and make some stops on defense, the Cougars could contend for a spot in the upper half of the league. If they fall short on either of these, they might just have to settle for another sub-.500 campaign.

Tigers have majority of potent offense back by Hobby King Concordian sports editor After a semifinal berth in the Missouri State High School Activities Association’s Class 1 semifinal round in 2010, the Wellington Tigers were hoping to do better in 2011. The stars were aligning in the Tigers’ favor throughout the regular season and their first two playoff games. That’s where it all ended. The Tigers lost a 36-29 shootout at home to East Buchanan, thus ending the season 12-1. They did, however, regain the top spot in the I-70 Conference, the difference-maker being a 48-32 victory over Concordia in the middle of the regular season. They won the I-70 at 7-0. With nine starters back on offense, a unit that produced 566 points (43.5 per game), the Tigers will be just as formidable in 2012. “We are a diverse offense with many players getting a chance to carry the ball at different times,” Bainbridge said. “For this to work, all of the players will have to be ready to execute when it is their time.” Wellington was stingy, for the most part, when it had to be defensively a year ago. They did give up 175 points (13.5 points per game), but they could be better this year with six starters back. OFFENSE (Pistol Spread) Leading the pistol spread offensive attack for the third straight year will be 6-foot tall, 190-pound senior Jacob Beckemeyer. He earned the conference’s offensive MVP and

a second-team all-state berth. Blaine Beissenherz, a 5-9, 170-pound senior, will be moved from his starting spot at receiver to a running-back slot. He earned allconference and all-district honors as a receiver in 2011. The Tigers have perhaps the best receiving tandem in the state returning in 5-10, 170pound senior Brandon Niendick and 6-4, 175-pound senior Christian Bryant. They both earned first-team all-conference honors last year. Niendick also earned first-team allstate honors as a receiver and second team as a returner. Jake Ruskey, a 5-11, 170-pound senior, returns as a capable tight end. Four starters return across the front, including 5-8, 185-pound senior Jason Hilden at right tackle and 6-0, 195-pound senior Brett Schaberg at left tackle. Hilden earned all-district honors and Schaberg all-conference, first-team honors last year. Nick Gibbs, a 5-9, 170-pound senior, has the inside track to be the starter at right guard. Aaron Schuster, a 6-1, 200-pound sophomore, also is in the mix. Schuster also could see some time at center. Quinton Hill, a 6-0, 175-pound junior, returns to start at left guard, a position he started in six games last year. Gage Sisson, a 5-11, 170-pound junior, started at center eight games last year. He returns to the same spot this year. Perhaps the biggest attribute of this offense is its speed.

“Our offense is very experienced, and will be very fast,” Bainbridge said. “We do not have much size up front, but we will try to use our speed to our advantage.” Line play will be the key. “We will have a few new faces up front,” he said. “They will need to improve throughout the season if we want to be successful.” It’s not an offense that depends on one player. “We will need all 11 playing well to be successful,” Bainbridge said. DEFENSE (Multiple: 4-3, 46, 3-3, 5-2) “We are very experienced at linebacker and the secondary,” Bainbridge said. “We will be able to put a lot of speed on the field.” Beckemeyer returns as a starter at one defensive end. However, Ruskey, who started and earned all-district as a defensive back, is new to the other side. Tyler Garton, a 5-11, 250-pound senior, has the inside track to nailing down his firstever starting position at defensive tackle. Hill is the top contender for the opening at nose guard. “Our D-Line is going to have to be effective,” Bainbridge said. “We are replacing three up front, which is always tough. But, we have confidence that our new faces will step up to the challenge.” Heading the linebacking corps will be Schaberg. He earned the conference’s MVP on defense and was voted first-team all-state.

Bryant returns as a first-team all-stater at one cornerback. The other starting spot is up for grabs between Jared Mershon, a 6-2, 160pound junior, and 5-9, 160-pound senior Dustin Seitz. Niendick returns at his familiar spot as free safety where he was a first-team all-conference selection last year. Beissenherz also returns as a starter at strong safety. SPECIAL TEAMS Niendick returns as kicker. He will be kicking off and handling any field-goal and extra-point opportunities that shall arise. He has been a starter since his sophomore season. Beckemeyer also is back as the starting punter. This will be his third year handling punts. OVERALL OUTLOOK The Tigers are the team to beat in the I70. They have the most talent returning with the most success. Trying to stop the Tigers, on paper, simply have too many weapons to stop for very long. Forcing three-and-outs is going to be a very difficult task for any defense in the conference and the state. Defensively, the Tigers have some of the best players in the state in their linebackers and defensive backs. If they can get a little help up front, they could be one of the best units in the state, as well. If the Tigers stay healthy, they certainly could contend for a state title.

Fenstermaker takes over Finley hoping Bearcats Mules’ grid program can build on week 10 win by Hobby King Concordian sports editor After seven seasons as head coach of the Lone Jack Mules, Mike Hedrick has moved on to be a coach at Holden. Taking over as head coach of the Mules is Jason Fenstermaker. Fenstermaker, a 2001 graduate of Grain Valley High School and a 2005 graduate of the University of St. Mary, is optimistic the Mules can be pretty good in his first year at the helm. In the final year under Hedrick, the Mules posted a 4-6 overall mark, including 4-3 in the I-70 Conference. Included in their wins was a victory over playoff-bound Santa Fe, 21-6, on the Chiefs’ home turf. Gone are some quality stalwarts for the Mules, including the likes of Joey Rains, Bryan Moore, Dalton Shahan, Skylar Overlander, Christian Phelps and Jake Suhr, carrying with them the majority of the offensive and defensive numbers from 2011. So, it’s almost a clean slate for Fenstermaker and his coaching staff of Forrest Rovello, Ben Call, Tony Ward and Justin Smith. OFFENSE (Split backs) Led by Rains on the ground (178 carries for 1,012 yards and eight TDs), Moore throwing for 895 yards and eight TDs and Overlander grabbing 32 passes for 430 yards and five scores, the Mules had a productive offense, scoring 248 points (24.8 points per game). But they are gone, so in steps a new crop of talent that will be led by sophomore quarterback Nick Kirk. He rushed for 110 yards and a score as a freshman. But he did not throw a pass. “He has the tools to be very good,” Fenstermaker said. Junior Jake Hopper is in line to be one of the backs. He had 43 yards and a touchdown on the ground last year. “Jake is a big, physical kid who runs hard,” Fenstermaker said. Junior Landon Schroeder will be the go-to

receiver, although he had just one catch for 10 yards last year. The line will consist of junior Zack Black at right tackle, junior Hayden Hall at left tackle, senior Jonathan Key at right guard, junior Angus Campbell at left guard and junior Quentin Lewis at center. Fenstermaker says the offense has been working hard to get the new approach down. “We need exceptional play from Kirk,” he said. “But that will be eased by the way the line blocks.” DEFENSE (4-3) The Mules allowed opponents 32.4 points per game last year. Trying to improve upon that number in the 4-3 alignment will be the 11 projected starters. Hopper and Hall are slated to be starters at the ends, Lewis at nose guard and Key at tackle. Black, sophomore Trevor Wilson and junior Michael Bresette are in line to be the linebackers. Junior Colby Oberweather and senior Brett Beckham are slated to be the corner backs, Kirk at free safety and Schroeder at strong safety. “This is a new defense for the kids, but it is a simple one to play,” Fenstermaker said. “The kids will always be in position to be successful and make a play. It will be up to them to make it.” Special Teams Schroeder, the all-conference, first-team kicker last year, will handle all of the kicking and punting duties. OVERALL OUTLOOK “Our goal is to be in every game and give ourselves a chance to win,” Fenstermaker said. That will all depend on how well all of the new faces mesh, especially across the offensive and defensive lines. They will have to improve on defense, playing like they did in the wins, where they limited their opponents to only six, six and 14 points in three of them.

“Good Luck

by Hobby King Concordian sports editor Heading into his second season as the head coach of Orrick Bearcats football, Scott Finley is hoping for continued improvement from his youthful squad. A year ago, the Bearcats had trouble in just about every aspect of their offensive and defensive approach, thus they lost by big margins in eight of the first nine weeks. The Bearcats showed marked improvement in week nine, dropping a heart-breaking 36-28 decision at St. Mary’s before ending the seasons on a positive note, shutting out Wentworth 28-0. But, Finley, along with his assistants Andy Chamberlin (defensive coordinator and linebackers coach) and Matt Palmer (defensive line and tight-ends coach), will have to find replacements for six seniors on last year’s squad. Included among them was Ian Pigg, the team’s quarterback. A year ago, Pigg rushed for 469 yards and three scores and threw for 407 yards and another TD. Pigg was named second-team all-conference at linebacker, where he had 78 tackles and a fumble recovery. Other seniors lost were Logan Oldham (32 tackles), Jordan Waters (15 tackles), Devin Waters (28 tackles), Larry Blair and Trey McGregor. OFFENSE (T) Junior John Moore will be stepping in as quarterback. He was a receiver last year, hauling in four passes for 49 yards. He will rely heavily on a ground game that will be led by senior Derrick Dennis, who led the team with 829 yards rushing and 11 touchdowns last year. “He will carry the load on offense,” Finley said. Finley is hopeful Lane Barker, a 5-9, 147pound sophomore, and Wyatt Nail, a 5-9, 140-pound junior, can ease some of the burden on Dennis, who carried the ball 179 times last year. Both Nail and Barker are newcomers to the program.

Other than having Dennis back, the Bearcats’ strength might be their offensive line where Hunter Guthrie is the leader. The 5-foot-7, 221-pound senior, is a physical player, according to Finley. “He will bring leadership to the offensive and defensive lines,” Finley said. Cody Combs, a 6-1, 206-pound sophomore, is the leading candidate to be the tight end. Ethan Tone-Pah-Hote returns as a starter along the front as a 5-10, 317-pound junior. Bryce Wheeler, a 5-10, 264-pound junior, and Tyler Crow, 5-7, 186-pound sophomore, also return as starters. The other starter along the line could be 5-9, 226-pound sophomore Patrick Jones. DEFENSE (5-3) The Bearcats return Guthrie (17 tackles, one-half sack), Tone-Pah-Hote, Wheeler (four tackles) and Jones across the front of the defense. Another player who Finley says could help the defensive line is Combs. Dennis is back as a starting linebacker, where he accumulated a team-high 108 tackles. Moore also returns at linebacker (46 tackles). Crow added 53 tackles, 1-1/2 sacks and two fumble recoveries, the latter two statistics leading the team. Special Teams The positions of punter and kicker were still being decided at the time of the interview. OVERALL OUTLOOK The Bearcats had trouble sustaining possession of the ball on offense last year. Thus, their 110 points scored were the fewest by six in the conference. But with almost their entire line coming back, that could get better this year. “We need a more consistent running game to control the clock,” Finley said. “We also need better passing efficiency.” On defense, they gave up the most points (454) during their 10-game schedule. “We need to stop the run and force teams into third-and-long situations,” Finley said.

Lady Orioles have roster of 23 by Hobby King Concordian sports editor Heading into her fifth season as the Concordia Lady Orioles volleyball head coach, Leslie Basye is hopeful her squad can make improvements upon its 2011 marks of 14-15-2 overall and 4-3 in the I70 Conference. In order to do that, the Lady Orioles must become more consistent. They have a roster of 23 to get it done. The roster includes five seniors, five juniors and six sophomores. However, they must overcome the losses to graduation of setter and middle hitter Halli Brackman, who was an allconference, first-team selection, right-side hitter and defensive specialist Taylor Bittiker and right-side hitter Miranda Schloman. Along with them, they took 162 kills, 128 blocks, 442 digs and 25 assists. So, four of the six starters return to the fold for a team that won as many as three matches in a row twice during last year. Senior and all-conference first-teamer Hailee Langkrahr returns as a starter at outside hitter where she led the team with 126 kills and 200 assists. She also added 40 blocks and 161 digs. She scored 144 points, including 14 aces. The other candidates for outside hitter include junior Cassidy Brockman, junior Brittany Reinwald (52 points, five aces, six kills, 24 digs, 50 assists) and freshman Shelby Spalding. Senior Staci Schlueter is a returning starter at middle hitter where she registered a team-high 103 blocks, 63 kills, 68 digs and seven assists in 2011. Others who could fill in at the position are freshman

Gloria Guier and freshman Ellison Brunkhorst. Basye, who is being assisted by Sam Willis, said hitting is going to be a focus this year. “We’re working on smart, aggressive plays at the net and developing strong hitters across the board,” she said. By the numbers, Langkrahr and Reinwald will be doubling as the team’s leading setters. Also available for setting responsibilities are freshman Mallory

Scherer and sophomore Kayla Stuart. Senior Katlin Murray returns as the team’s starting libero. She paced the team with 266 digs a year ago. She also added two assists, 15 kills and 84 points, including 13 aces. Also listed as a possibility at libero is junior Morgan Bell. As for defense, Basye said the team is working “on a relentless pursuit of the ball and quick movement.”

Basye is hopeful the Lady Orioles’ relentless work on serving and hitting the ball aggressively turns into a strength of the team. “Serve receive could be a struggle for us,” she concedes. Communication relentless pursuit of the ball and “everyone pushing themselves to the next level of play” could be the top keys for success, Basye said.

Lady Saints return four starters by Hobby King Concordian sports editor Times have been good for Aaron Marsh in his first two seasons as head coach of the Saint Paul Lady Saints volleyball team. Not only have the Lady Saints won every match they have played in the I-70 Conference, they have advanced to the MSHSAA Class 2 Final Four each season, finishing third in 2010 and fourth last year. Coming off a year in which they were 7-0 in the conference and 32-6-2 overall, excitement is still at a fever pitch. The Lady Saints will have to find replacements for middle hitters Meagan Nolte, an all-conference, first-team selection, and Regan Ohlman and outside hitter Bethany Anderson. Nolte was the leader of the team in many categories, including kills with 340 and blocks with 88. Ohlman had 78 kills, 30 blocks, 101 digs and 69 aces. Anderson contributed 128 kills, 236 digs and 27 aces. At the time of submitting his information, Marsh, who is being assisted by Esther Mehl and Andrea Kueck, had 13 on the roster, including four seniors, three juniors and three sophomores. Senior Marissa Brackman, a first-team, all-conference pick, leads the candidates at outside hitter. A year ago, Brackman was second in kills with 234 and led in digs with 304 and aces with 85. Other candidates for outside hitter include junior Bre Vogelsmeier and sophomore Tiffany Bennett. Sophomore Becca Roepe, Bennett and junior Hadley Rolf are top on the list for middle hitters.

Members of the 2012 Saint Paul Lady Saints volleyball team (from left) are: Hadley Rolf, Gabrielle Kueck, Devon Heins, Marissa Brackman, Tiffany Bennett; back, Vilde Stakseng, Maria Gjoen, Rebecca Roepe, Breanna Vogelsmeier, Logan Burrow, Molly Rolan. Senior Devon Heins is another returning starter at setter. She earned first-team all-conference by registering 718 assists, 179 digs and 51 aces. Other setters could be senior Logan Burrow and/or senior Molly Rolan, who started last year. Rolf actually returns as a starter at libero. She was second on the team with 295 digs. Marsh is hopeful to get more production out of Vogelsmeier, Bennett and Roepe as hitters to fill in where others have graduated.

On defense, the Lady Saints could suffer. “We don’t have a lot of height at the net, so we will have to pass very well and get some blocks when we do have our height in the front row,” Marsh said. The Lady Saints have been machinelike since Marsh began his tenure. They’ve mowed down most opponents in straight sets. He says he thinks team chemistry will be a strength again. “This group has really connected and wants to help each other succeed in any

way possible,” he said. “Also, I believe playing an extremely strong junior-varsity schedule last year will allow some of the younger players to step in and contribute quicker than expected.” He said the Lady Saints can be successful again, but they need to limit miscues. “We have to play with consistency in all aspects of the game, and then limit our mistakes,” he said. “We also have to strive to not allow extra chances for the other team to have the ball.”

Good luck to all the area teams!

Harms excited about Santa Fe’s prospects by Hobby King Concordian sports editor In her first year as Santa Fe’s head coach, Kinsey Harms led the Lady Chiefs’ volleyball team to the MSHSAA Class 1 Final Four. Though the Lady Chiefs finished fourth, what a way it was to begin her head-coaching career. Can the Lady Chiefs have a repeat performance in Harms’ sophomore year? Can they figure out a way to beat Saint Paul and recapture the I-70 Conference title? If they are to have another good year, Harms, who is being assisted by Ashton Sanders, will have to find replacements for two vital seniors, including one starter, lost to graduation off a team that was 24-11-3 overall and 6-1 in the I-70 Conference. Gone are Lauren Zitelman, who had 186 kills, a team-high 53 blocks, 237 digs and a team-best 40 aces, and Lauren Wright, who 65 digs, 90 assists and 27 aces in a reserve role. Zitelman was an allconference, first-teamer. The roster numbers 25, including three seniors, four juniors and five sophomores. Senior Callie Gieselman returns as a starter at outside hitter where she had 82 kills, 193 digs and 27 aces last year. “Callie was a big part of the leadership last year,” Harms said. “She is a strong and reliable player who uses her head during the game.” Others who could play outside hitter are junior Mikiah Zumalt and sophomore Katey Peters. Both played sparingly on the varsity last year. Senior Chelsea Winter, an all-conference, first-team selection, returns as a starting right-side hitter. She accumulated 175 kills, 17 blocks, 257 digs, 50 assists and 32 aces last year. “She’s a tough leader and driven to get back where we were last year,” Harms

She paced the team with 205 kills and digs with 269. Her kill percentage of 31.7 was second only to Zitelman’s 34.4. “Lexi’s been waiting for this since last November,” Harms said. “She’s going to come out hungry. She’s playing confidently with the intensity we need. Others in the mix at middle hitter are junior Brooke Barnett and freshman Kylie Limback. Barnett was the team’s leading setter last year, dishing out 472 assists. She also had 180 digs and 30 aces.

“Brooke is still a beautiful setter,” Harms said. “We’ve talked a lot about footwork and body position over the summer. She is really getting it down.” Freshman McKenzie Phillips is the leading candidate for libero. “She reads the ball with ease and defends the court well,” Harms said. Abby Zitelman is another freshman who shows promise as a libero. Brittany Limback is as a senior who has been fighting an ankle injury over the summer who could see some playing time, too. Tristan Sowers is out for the season after tearing a ligament in her knee. “We’re working hard to extend our individual abilities beyond what we did last

year,” Harms said. “We’re lucky to have so many options. I really think we will be strong in many areas where we were weak last year. “All the players are hungry for another shot this year. We’ve talked about the target on our backs, and everyone’s aware that to get where we want to be, we’re going to have to fight off the dogs.”

Good luck Lady Chiefs!

Niemeyer back for ninth season by Hobby King Concordian sports editor Sweet Springs wound up 2-5 in the I70 Conference and 10-13-1 overall last year. Ninth-year Lady Greyhounds’ volleyball head coach Kristen Niemeyer is hoping the 2012 season can be even better. Reaching double-digit wins is a milestone for the Lady Greyhounds. They had never reached at least 10 wins in any of Niemeyer’s previous seven seasons. Heading into the 2012 campaign, Niemeyer, who is being assisted by Sarah Hays, is hopeful the losses of setter Ashley delRosario and all-conference, first-team member Brittany Higgins isn’t going to be too much for the Lady Greyhounds to overcome and improve. But replacing Higgins will be a tall order because she led the team in kills with 143 and blocks with 21. Her 172 digs ranked second on the team. The loss of delRosario means the Lady Greyhounds will have to find a replacement for their leader in assists (164). Kaitlyn Fuehring, a 5-foot-6 senior, is one of four returning starters as an outside hitter. She had 44 kills, two blocks, 158 digs and 25 aces last year. “Kaitlyn has improved and become more confident,” Niemeyer said. “She also is a motivator on the court and is always positive.” Mikalah Vogelsmeier, a 5-6 senior, also is a returning starter at middle hitter. She supplied 107 kills, 16 blocks and a teamhigh 28 aces in 2011. “Though lacking in height, she hustles all the time and is a great leader on and off the court,” Niemeyer said. Rebecca Tyler, a 5-5 senior, returns as the team’s other setter where she dished out 163 assists in 2011. “She is more of a silent leader, but

She has a roster of 15, including three seniors, two juniors and five sophomores, from which to select. Niemeyer is point-blank with her honesty. “Our hitters are going to struggle out of the gates,” she said. “We lack height and aggressiveness at the net, but it has been continuing to grow. “Our defense has picked up this last year. The girls have worked hard over the summer.” Niemeyer thinks teamwork, defense and serving will be team strengths. “Our offense at the net and our passing (are our weaknesses),” she said. “This has always been our weakness.” Good Luck to all Teams!!

Lady Cougars under new leadership

Lady Tigers will be a handful

by Hobby King Concordian sports editor At least for now, Katie Woolsey has stepped aside as head coach of the Crest Ridge Lady Cougars’ volleyball team after a five-year run. She led the Lady Cougars to a 14-11-2 overall record and 4-3 in the I-70 Conference in 2011. In comes Angela Flick to take over the program. Flick is a 2001 graduate of Crest Ridge and a 2004 graduate of the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg. The Lady Cougars lost three seniors. Gone are outside hitter Brandi Locke (125 kills, 100 digs, 27 aces), who was voted to the all-conference, honorable-mention list, middle hitter Bailey Everhart (80 kills, 55 blocks, 110 digs, 55 aces) and libero Kenzee Ellison (11 kills, 112 digs, 40 aces). Melodi Branscum, a 5-foot-7 senior outside hitter, returns as a starter. She accumulated 64 kills, 50 digs and 36 aces. “She is aggressive at the net and an allaround great player,” Flick, who is being assisted by Brandon Wallace, said. “Mel will provide our team with a lot of leadership.” Breanna Wonderly, a 5-9 senior, is a returning starter as a middle hitter. She had team-bests with 199 kills, 55 blocks and aces 55, while being second in digs with 110. She, too, was voted first-team allconference. “She is a big threat in the middle with her blocking and hitting,” Flick said. Another returning starter is 5-5 senior Destanie Garza, who had 366 assists as the number one setter. The Lady Cougars also have 5-6 senior Kaitlyn Francy listed as a starter at outside hitter. She was a reserve last year. Lillian Hunter, a 5-10 freshman, will move right into a starting spot opposite Wonderly at middle hitter, according to Flick.

by Hobby King Concordian sports editor A year ago, Peggy Tuter led the Wellington Lady Tigers’ volleyball team to a district championship and a berth in the MSHSAA playoffs. The Lady Tigers eventually lost in the sectional round, but they still had a fine season, even though they wound up just under .500 overall. Wellington, which was beaten by I-70 Conference rival Santa Fe in a marathon three-set match at Alma in the sectional round, wound up 12-14-2 overall and 3-4 in the conference.

Kennedy Dick, a 5-6 junior, Cynthia Shackelford, a 5-4 senior, Kelsey Seaman, a 5-3 sophomore, and 5-9 freshman Kaylee Schmidt also figure to get some varsity time. “Our hitting will be about the same as last year,” Flick said. “With Bre and Lily in the middle and Mel returning on the outside, we should be a hitting force in the conference. Our defensive strengths are our big blocks in the middle. “Our weakness is ball control. If we can overcome this, we will definitely be a force to be reckoned with.”

The Lady Tigers should be a formidable foe for anybody, especially due to them having the majority of their production returning and having tremendous height at the net. The Lady Tigers did lose four seniors off of their varsity, the most productive being Megan Beckemeyer (seven kills, 359 digs, 17 aces), Anna Hammond (26 kills, 62 blocks, 68 digs) and Taylor Garrison (65 kills, 12 blocks, 148 digs, 17 aces). Beckemyer was selected to the honorable-mention list in the all-conference voting last year. One of the most powerful returning starters for the Lady Tigers is 5-foot-8 senior Katie Kropp, who was a first-tea,, allconference selection with a team-high 110 kills. She also was second on the team with 226 digs and led in aces with 30. Mikayla Lohsandt also is a returning starter at middle hitter. In her freshman season, the 6-3 player had 85 kills and 34 blocks. Another player who could provide a wall at the net as a middle hitter is 5-10 junior Kaitlin Jones, a transfer from Odessa. Although standing 5-11, junior Mikayla Seitz is listed as a setter. She handed out 51 assists in 2011. Christa Beckemeyer, a 5-3 junior, is the top setter returning, dishing out 151 helpers last year. “Our strength is in the middle,” Tuter said. “There’s not much weakness in our rotation.” Even though the Lady Tigers will be playing without an experienced libero, Tuter says the team has much more quickness defensively. “This team has good team chemistry,” she said. “But we don’t have much depth. So we cannot have any injuries.”

Lone Jack returns Surber to the fold by Hobby King Concordian sports editor After leading the Lone Jack Lady Mules to an 11-18 season in her second year as head coach, Gayla Surber returns to be head coach again this year. Surber is upbeat because three of the players in the starting lineup last year were freshmen. This year, the number out for volleyball is 19, including four seniors, two juniors and 10 sophomores. Leading the returning starters will be 5foot-10 senior Jordan Surber, who led the team with 226 kills and 44 blocks. She was voted to the first-team all-conference. One of the freshman starters last year returning is 5-11 middle hitter Kaitlyn Moore. She had 86 kills, 29 blocks and 81 digs last year. Hailey Nazworthy, a 5-3 junior, and 5-

8 junior outside hitter Emily Hedrick also return with some varsity experience. “These players bring a high level of hustle and determination to the floor,” coach Surber, who did not have an assistant coach at the time of the interview, said. Coach Surber said the players are committed and coachable. “The bonding and teamwork from just a few practices looks to be very strong,” she said. But she said growing pains might be evident early on due to the team’s overall inexperience. The Lady Mules will be missing four seniors, including outside hitter Jamie Kralicek, who was an honorable-mention all-conference selection in 2011. Also gone are Nicki Zink, Ashlee Heinz and Anna Holsten.

Orrick has strong junior and sophomore classes by Hobby King Concordian sports editor A year ago, the Orrick Lady Bearcats volleyball team was under the direction of Randy Kent and Tracy Bornman as co-head coaches. This year, the program belongs to Kent. In his second season, Kent has a roster that numbers 24, but he will have to find replacements for a fine senior class of graduates, including Amy Isenhour, Devon Crow, Miranda Williams and Caitlin Stevenson. In earning an honorable-mention slot in the all-conference voting, Isenhour had team highs with 99 kills and 42 blocks. She also had 28 digs and 20 aces. Williams was second in kills with 73. She also had 14 digs. Stevenson paced the team with 24 aces. The Lady Bearcats have four seniors this year. Makayla Easley, Caitlin Hamer, Lauren Twyman and Sheila Allee make up the senior class. Only Easley earned any playing time on the varsity level last year. Leading the way for the Lady Bearcats will be underclassmen at almost every position. Junior Sydnee McGlothlin returns as an outside hitter where she had 28 kills last year. Junior Madison Winters returns as the team’s leading setter with 245 assists last year. Winters also was a hitter, accumulating 32 kills. Junior Madison Endsley also returns as an outside hitter where she had 35 kills and 18 digs last year. Sam Fulte is a sophomore middle hitter who had 70 kills, 36 blocks and 11 aces as a freshman. “(Sam is) supremely athletic and learned a lot last year,” Kent said. “Maddy (Endsley) has grown and has more experience. Madison Winters works hard and understands the game.” Kent also expects McKenna Wright and Shaina Cook to contribute on the varsity level. “We are a young team,” Kent said. “Our strongest players are sophomores and juniors. A realistic goal would be to make it to the postseason and win a match or two.” In order to reach that goal, Kent said the Lady Bearcats must improve defensively and in serve receiving. “We also need to block, pass and dig better,” he said. “We let too many balls hit the floor last year. We didn’t cover out hitters well enough.”
