Juniors James Foster,

And since the Saints are in Class 2, any district game will be tough, he said. Saint Paul Lutheran starts its season on Aug. 30 at Wentworth Military Academy.

Young, hard-working team takes the field for Santa Fe by Jacki Wood SPORTS EDITOR

We've got you covered!

The Santa Fe Chiefs football team lost six seniors to graduation from last year’s team. But seventh-year head coach Andy Frerking doesn’t seem too worried with the young team he has in front of him. “We lost some good players and some excellent leaders,” he said. “However, while we will be young this season, I feel our squad is working hard with great attitudes.” His team goals for the year are simple – practice hard, have positive attitudes and have fun on Friday nights. Hounds football team hungry to turn things around by Jacki Wood SPORTS EDITOR

The Sweet Springs Greyhounds will rely on a trio of seniors to lead their football team this season. Head coach Melvin Baker will expect seniors Jeffery Hall, Heath Snider and Nathan Vogelsmeier, who were all named to the All-District team last year, to step up and shine once again. Baker said he is excited for that core group to have “a strong finish to their high school playing days.” These seniors started their high school careers going 0-10 in 2010 followed by a 1-9 finish in 2011 and a 2-8 record in 2012. Hall will lead the team at quarterback. He also plays linebacker on defense and handles the kicking game for the Greyhounds. Snider will line up at center and also play cornerback on defense. And the team will look to Vogelsmeier at halfback, cornerback and kick returner. In addition to the seniors,

Baker said other players projected to make an impact include junior end and linebacker Trevor Phillips, junior cornerback/safety Jared Dillon and sophomore wide receivers Mario Percell and Rhett Snider. He said he will also look to sophomore guard/tackle Garrett Hollingsworth, if his knee is okay. The Greyhounds will also have a few players from Malta Bend, who is co-oping this season with Sweet Springs. Last year’s Greyhound team, who also went 1-6 in the conference, lost quarterback and linebacker Derrick Nelson, halfback and cornerback Jeffery Dierker, guard/tackle Kyle Evans and end/safety Jamison Harrison to graduation. “(We’ll) need to fill shoes in those positions,” Baker said. It was a very young team, he said, that was able to get in lots of playing time. And that experience should help the Hounds as they start the season. Areas of focus this year for Baker will be to take better care of

the ball and to finish the long drive. Their team goals include improving their skills and their record from last year’s finish, he said. A couple of conference foes will likely test the Greyhounds the most this season, Baker said. “Wellington-Napoleon, who went deep in playoffs last year,” he said. “And Crest Ridge, with the number of returners to their program.” They won’t see either team until late in the season, which should help the Greyhounds. Now in his third year as head coach, Baker will be joined on the sidelines by longtime assistant, Mike Staples, as well as first-year assistant coach Ryan Armstrong. It will be a battle of the Greyhounds to kick off the season as Sweet Springs faces Windsor at home on Aug. 30.

Wellington-Napoleon looks to create new identity this year by Jacki Wood SPORTS EDITOR

After a successful 11-2 season last year – which included a loss in the quarterfinals to eventual state champ Penney Hornets – the Wellington-Napoleon Tigers will look to create a new identity in 2013. Head coach Quenton Bainbridge said they can’t compare this team to last year’s as it has too many new pieces. “We will have to create our own identity, with new faces having the opportunity to make plays each game,” Bainbridge said, who enters his seventh year as head coach. “We will have to continue to get better every week.” The Tigers will be without several key players from last year’s team 7-0 conference championship and playoff team. “Many of these players have been two-, three- or four-year starters for our program,” Bainbridge said. “They had a huge impact on our past successes and have laid a good foundation for continuing a tradition here at WellingtonNapoleon. “They will be greatly missed, but their impact on our community and our team is one that we hope will help us in the upcoming seasons.” Bainbridge said his projected impact players will be sophomore QB/LB Tristan Green, senior WR/DB Jared Mershon, junior WR/DBs Levi Banner and Alex Rodenberg, sophomore WR/DB/K Blake Gray, junior WR/DE Drew Bunch, senior RB/DB Nick Bross, sophomore RB/LB/P Dallas Reynolds, sophomore DE Luke

Schaberg, senior OL/DLs Nick Dysart and Caleb Thilking, junior OL/DL Aaron Schuster, sophomore OL/DLs Daniel Driscoll, Brock Beckemeyer and Caleb Williams. Returning letter-winners include Mershon, Banner, Bross, Green and Schuster. Mershon received Honorable Mention AllConference Running Back honors last year. “We have a very different team than we had last year,” Bainbridge said. “We are inexperienced in many places, but do have the talent and ability to continue to do a lot of the things we like to do as a football team. “We will continue to try to be dynamic in both the pass and run game as well as tough defensively. We will have to play well every week to be successful, but are optimistic of our chances to be competitive every week.” Bainbridge said Saint Paul and Crest Ridge should offer the Tigers some of their best competition of the season. “They both have some very talented skill players returning and have always been well coached,” he said. Bainbridge will once again be assisted by Andy Hampton, Lincoln Bainbridge, Tristan Layman and Mitchell Bainbridge. “We know that each and every game will be tough,” Bainbridge said. “It will be a great challenge for our team and coaches to be ready for a close game every week. The games will be hard fought, which will make our successes that much more appreciated.” The Tigers’ season begins Aug. 30 against conference foe Lone Jack.

Crest Ridge to build upon team’s past by Jacki Wood SPORTS EDITOR The Crest Ridge Cougars hope to build on their 5-5 overall record from last year. And with most of the offense returning, head coach Chris Cavanah is eager to get the season started. “Offensively, we return most of our skill players from last year’s team including our quarterback,” Cavanah said. “We hope to build on what we have done in the past.” The sixth-year head coach said that means becoming more balanced and throwing the ball more on offense. On defense, he said they just have to be better. “We gave up too many points in big games last year,” he said. The Cougars will also have several holes to fill from graduation. “We lost four All-Conference players who played big roles for us,” he said. “We need some young kids to step up and play big roles for us this year.” Cavanah will especially look to the following players who received postseason honors last year: senior QB Ethan Matthews (2nd Team All-State all-purpose back and 1st Team All-District and 2nd Team All-Conference quarterback); junior RB Justin Donald

(Honorable Mention All-Conference running back); sophomore WR Noah McCune (2nd Team All-Conference wide receiver); junior OL/DL Russell Arnold (2nd Team All-District and 2nd Team All-Conference defensive line and Honorable Mention All-Conference offensive line); and senior LB Caleb Thomas (Honorable Mention All-Conference linebacker). He also expects senior WR/DB/K Dallas Hoffman, senior WR Austin Fitterling, senior DL Johnny McCannon, senior DB Austin Bestgen and junior LB Cole Foley to all make an impact on the team. Cavanah anticipates Wellington-Napoleon to be one of his team’s toughest opponents this year as well as Saint Paul Lutheran, a program that keeps getting better each season, he said. He will be assisted by Jake Vencill, Flip Courter, Mark Amos and Matt Jordan. The team starts the season on August 30 against East Buchanan, who Cavanah called a tough program in one of the best smallschool conferences in the state. “I’m excited for the season to get started,” Cavanah said. “Our summer weight program and camps have been well attended. Now I’m excited to see what we can accomplish this fall.”

New coach takes over Orrick Bearcats football program

by Jacki Wood SPORTS EDITOR

After spending two years coaching at Belton High School, Nick Chapman will take over the Orrick Bearcats football team this year. With an 0-7 conference record and a 1-9 overall record, Chapman will look to his young team to improve with each game and restore tradition to Bearcat football. “(I’m most excited) to see our young kids grow as the season progresses,” he said. The team lost three seniors to graduation last year – quarterback John Moore, running back Derrick Dennis and offensive lineman

Hunter Guthrie. “Losing those players will hurt us from an experience and leadership standpoint,” Chapman said. “But it will give some younger kids the opportunity to step up and play a bigger role for our team this season. “It will also get them experience they will need over the next two or three years.” With just 13 players on the team so far, Chapman will also need them to stay healthy. Returning letter-winners are David Moore, Lane Barker, Bryar Martin, Austin Clark, Kelton Blacklock, Colton Guthrie, Tyler Crow, Bryce Wheeler, Blake McNulty, Nathan McGregor, Rylee

Bunch and Cody Combs. Chapman’s projected impact players on offense this season include junior OL Tyler Crow, junior TE Cody Combs, junior RB Lane Barker and sophomore WR Bryar Martin. On defense, he will look to Crow at DL, Martin at CB and freshman Alex Stockton at LB to make big plays. Chapman also said he expects the success they had running the ball last year to continue into this year, and he will be focusing mostly on improving the defensive and offensive line play. Orrick will be tested on the field when they play Crest Ridge in week four and Wellington-

Napoleon in week eight, Chapman said. “Both teams have been very good the last few years and bring several of their key players back from a year ago,” he said. Chapman will be assisted by defensive coordinator Andy Chamberlin, in his fifth year with the team, and by special teams coach Jarod McMahon, in his first year with the Bearcats. This year’s team goals are “to play hard, build on success and take steps forward,” Chapman said. The Orrick Bearcats will try to do just that as they kick off the season on Aug. 30 against the Mid-Buchanan Dragons at home.

Mules football making big strides by Jacki Wood SPORTS EDITOR

Consistency. It’s what Lone Jack head football coach Jason Fenstermaker wants to see from his team this year. “We need to play more consistent,” the fourth-year head coach said. After going 4-7 last year, and 2-5 in conference play, Fenstermaker is ready for the season to start. “My boys are excited about the challenge in front of them,” he said. “I saw them take big strides throughout the year (last year). They started to compete every day.” Fenstermaker said their goal is to be competitive in every game. “We want to play hard and give ourselves a chance to win every game,” he said. “We have some people that are eager to play and let us not miss a beat.” Projected impact players on

offense, according to Fenstermaker, include sophomore QB Joey Brandon, junior WR Nick Kirk, senior TE Jake Hopper and senior OLs Hayden Hall, Angus Campbell and Quinton Lewis. On the defensive side of the ball, Fenstermaker will look to Brandon at FS, Kirk at SS, Hopper, Hall, Campbell and Lewis at DL and junior LB Trevor Wilson. Senior K/P Landon Schroeder will be the go-to guy on special teams. Assistant coaches for the Mules this year will be Ken Howard, Garrett Beck, Jake Cantrell, Ben Call, Jerry Maclean, Bryant Knapp and Marci Fenton. Lone Jack gets the season started when they host the Wellington-Napoleon Tigers. “They are always a tough test,” Fenstermaker said. “And having to play them week one is always a challenge. They are well coached.” Kick-off is set for 7 p.m. on Fri., Aug. 30, at Lone Jack.

Oriole volleyball looks for talented players to step up PAGE 14 — THE CONCORDIAN, Concordia, Missouri, Wednesday, August 28, 2013

by Jacki Wood SPORTS EDITOR

Leslie Basye believes her team can put their talents together and have a successful year. That’s what the Concordia Orioles head volleyball coach said she is most excited for – seeing those talented and determined athletes stepping up together on the court. They’ll have to do it, however, without five key players who graduated last year. “Even though we are losing five seniors, we have a lot of talent on the current team,” Basye said. “And while their leadership will be missed, I believe we have players that are capable of stepping up and filling those positions.” Last year’s 17-13-3 team finished 3-3 in the I-70 Conference.

specialist Cailey Cooper and middle hitter Ellison Brunkhorst. The Orioles will work to continue working on attacking more. “Serve receive was a huge success for us last year and we look to continuing that progress this year,” she said. “We will focus on being more aggressive at the net as well as at the service line.” Basye said she anticipates Saint Paul Lutheran and Santa Fe will offer her girls their toughest competition of the season. “Saint Paul and Santa Fe both have strong programs and talented Sarah Reed/The Concordian Members of the 2013 Concordia Orioles volleyball team include: front row, athletes,” she said. Shelby Spalding, Bailey Heimsoth, Stephanie Dennis, Meredith Scherer, Cassie Basye enters her sixth year as Colborn, Bailey Steinmueller and Kayla Davis; middle row, Laura Edwards, head coach and will be assisted by Mallory Scherer, Makayla Hartwig, Cassidy Brockman, Brittany Reinwald, Kayla Stuart and Gloria Guier; back row, Cailey Cooper, Hannah Hon, Grace Aimee Bredehoeft in her first year. The Orioles will take the floor Stumbaugh, Ellison Brunkhorst, Mariah Rudy, Raelyn Caldwell and McKenna for the first time this season on Meyer. Sept. 9 at Smithton. Their first Returning letter-winners from Brockman, setter Brittany Rein- home game will be on Sept. 16 that team include senior Cassidy wald, outside hitter and defensive against Green Ridge.

Wellington-Napoleon returns several talented players this year by Jacki Wood SPORTS EDITOR After going 24-4-3 last year that included a loss to St. Mary’s in the district semifinals, Peggy Tuter returns for her third year as head coach at Wellington-Napoleon. She will be joined by first-year assistant coach Derek Twombly as well as a considerable amount of talent returning to the team. Tuter’s goal – to always get to state – could become a reality this season with a couple of returning players who received postseason honors last year. Kaitlyn Jones was named to the All-Region Team and Mikayla Lohsandt was named to the All-Region Honorable Mention Team as well as to the I-70 All-Conference Team.

In addition to Jones and Lohsandt, other returning letterwinners from last year’s team will include Christa Beckemeyer, Abbie Thompson, Morgan Weedman, Madison Thornburg, Jaime Ruskey, Chastity Meierer, Tori Florence and Allison Baker. However, the team will have to find a way to replace Mikayla Seitz, All-Region and All-District Team, and Katie Kropp, All-District Team, who graduated. “Both girls were very solid athletes,” Tuter said. “Mikayla had complete control of the offense at the setter. She was our motivator. “Katie was just a solid allaround player.” Seitz and Kropp helped the Tigers to a 5-2 record in the I-70 Conference last year. The team also won the Lone Jack Tournament and

placed third in the I-70 Conference Tournament. But Tuter believes some of the success the team saw last year will carry over into this season. “We want to always push through points and not get stuck in a rotation where we lose our focus and points,” she said. “We did that very well last year and I would like to see that continue.” She said she wants to improve their strong defensive play and is excited for the season to get started to see what the girls can do. Tuter anticipates Jones and Thompson at outside hitter, Mikayla Lohsandt at middle hitter and Thornburd at libero to be impact players for the team this year. The Tigers’ toughest opponent should be Santa Fe, who Tuter said is the strongest team in the confer-

ence. “They are a very good passing team and strong fundamentally,” she said. In addition to getting to state, Tuter said their team goal is to “not lose any matches where we beat ourselves.” Wellington-Napoleon’s first match of the season is Sept. 5 at home against Carrollton. Have a great year!

Saint Paul ready to dominate again this year

by Jacki Wood SPORTS EDITOR

Winning districts the past three seasons sounds pretty good. But Saint Paul Lutheran head volleyball coach Aaron Marsh believes there’s more potential to discover with his team. “I’m most excited to see how high our potential can be,” he said. “We show flashes of playing really well, and then other times not as aggressive as we should. But seeing the potential is exciting to see how high we can take it.” In addition to being district champs, last year’s team took first place in the I-70 conference with an undefeated 7-0 record and an overall record of 32-3. The Saints took second place at the William Chrisman and Warrensburg tournaments, first place at the I70 Conference Tournament, and lost to Holden in the sectional round of the postseason. And while this year’s team will be without several key players from last season, Marsh expects to see much of the same success as last season. “I think we have the overall athletic talent to do the things we did last year,” the fourth-year head coach said. “We will just have to work hard to do the little things to be well rounded.”

Injuries plague Lone Jack volleyball team

by Jacki Wood SPORTS EDITOR

Jacki Wood/The Concordian

Members of the 2013 Saint Paul Saints volleyball team include: front row, Julia Puester, Emily Aversman, Alyssa Hamblen, Tiffany Bennett, Jenny Goucher, Katie Craig, Gabby Kueck and Hadley Rolf; back row, Liesl Henning, Clara Nebel, Hannah Minor, Shannon Peters, Sydney Bredehoeft, Becca Roepe, Anna Colwell and Bre Vogelsmeier.

The Saints have plenty of talent returning in Becca Roepe who was named to the All-Conference 1st Team, All-District 1st Team and to the All-Region Team, Hadley Rolf who was named to the All-Conference and All-Region Honorable Mention teams, and Tiffany Bennett who was named to the All-District Honorable Mention Team. Marsh said his projected impact players include Roepe at middle hitter, Rolf at outside hitter/libero, Bennett at outside hitter, Bre Vogelsmeier at outside hitter/middle hitter, Gabby Kueck at outside hitter/defensive specialist, Alyssa Ham-

blen at weakside defensive specialist/setter, Sydney Bredehoeft at weakside hitter and Anna Colwell at middle hitter. This year’s team goal will be to play solid, smart and aggressive volleyball, Marsh said, and the girls will focus on improving their defense from last season throughout the schedule that awaits them. “We play a very tough schedule all the way around,” Marsh said. “We know we will get every team’s best shot.” Saint Paul will start the season on Sept. 5 at home against Lafayette County.

The summertime was not kind to the Lone Jack volleyball team. Three varsity players went down with injuries and will not be available. Fourth-year head coach Gayla Surber called it a “rebuilding year” due to the injuries. “Success will be measured by how well our team can learn new positions,” Surber said. “Also, a lot will depend on our younger players and how well they adapt to faster high school play.” In addition to the injuries, last year’s 11-13-1 team lost several to graduation. Surber and assistant coach Fenae Fenton will need the other returning letter-winners to step up including senior Hailey Nazworthy, junior Sierra Osborn, junior Sammy Kralicek and sophomore Andie Arnone. Nazworthy is the only returning player to have received postseason honors last year. She was named to the All-District second team at setter. As the season progresses, Surber said she will look to the simple things in this year of rebuilding. “Recognize success in the little things,” she said. “Like the improvement in a player’s skills.” The Mules’ season begins on Sept. 3 at Cass Midway.

After state playoff run, Santa Fe wants more by Jacki Wood SPORTS EDITOR

The Santa Fe volleyball team has a bit of a target on its back after placing fourth in the Class 1 State Tournament the past two years. But that isn’t slowing them down any. “We still have something to prove,” third-year head coach Kinsey Harms said. “I expect us to be a threat to everyone we play. “I expect the girls to push harder than last year, to be mentally tough, to expect more out of themselves and our team.” Last year’s 28-9-2 team – which placed second in the I-70 conference – lost two key players in OH Callie Gieselman and RS Chelsea Winter to graduation, both who received postseason honors. “Callie and Chelsea were huge for us,” Harms said. “Luckily, I think we have the talent to amend these losses. “The girls are chomping at the bit to have these roles. We have plenty of returning and emerging talent to grow from last year.” That returning talent includes senior Brooke Barnett (I-70 Conference Honorable Mention and AllDistrict Team); junior Lexi Smith (I-70 Conference All-Tournament Team, Smith-Cotton All-Tournament Team, I-70 All-Conference, All-District Team, Class 1 All-Region Central/South Central and AllState First Team); and sophomore Kylie Limback (I-70 All-Conference

and All-District Team). Other returning letter-winners on the team are senior Mikiah Zumalt, junior Katey Peters and sophomores Courtney Bishop and Mackenzie Phillips. Harms anticipates this year’s impact players to be Barnett and Lauren Wiggins at setter and right side hitters, Smith and Limback as middle hitters and Bishop and Zumalt as outside hitters. As far as this season’s schedule goes, Harms has her sights set on a few teams as the Chiefs’ toughest opponents. “Saint Paul because we still haven’t dethroned them in the con-

WellingtonNapoleon because each year they are getting harder and harder to beat. “And everyone else because we have a huge bull’s-eye on our back.” Harms will be assisted by Ashton Sander this year. The Chiefs start the season off Sept. 3 at home against Carrollton.

New coach to lead Cougars

by Jacki Wood SPORTS EDITOR With such a young group of girls on the court this year, the Crest Ridge High School Cougars volleyball team will focus on teamwork to be competitive. First-year head coach Jennifer English said while they may be inexperienced, they are still looking forward to a successful season. “The girls are excited to be back,” she said. “We have a young team, and our focus will be on teamwork.” The Cougars lost several members of last year’s team – that went 715-1 overall and 1-6 in conference play – to graduation. “We lost a lot of experience,” English said. However, her young team is ready and eager to play. The Cougars will look to middle hitter Lily Hunter, who was named to the All-District team last year, for experience and leadership. In addition to Hunter, other returning letter-winners are setter and right side hitter Kennedy Dick, outside hitter Whitney Hutcherson and right side hitter Kaylee Schmidli. English will be assisted by firstyear coach, Lisa Siegfried. Crest Ridge will take the floor for the first time this season at home on Sept. 3 against Smithton. Good luck Lady Chiefs!

Reinhardt said she is really looking forward to her first year and getting the season started. “A new coach can entirely change the direction of the program,” Reinhardt said. “So the goal for this year is to build a strong team foundation for the years to come.” Reinhardt said she’s excited to see what this year’s team can accomplish. “It’s a little difficult to know what lies ahead,” she said. “But I think all the girls are looking forward to a fresh start this season. I am very excited to get the season started and

Peters takes over Orrick volleyball by Jacki Wood SPORTS EDITOR

The Orrick Bearcats volleyball team will have a new coach as it starts the 2013 fall season. Tricia Peters takes over the helm for her first year at Orrick. She previously coached at Lawson for five years in the 90s. She will be assisted by Lauren Duvall, also in her first year for the Bearcats. While Peters said she is unsure about what to expect – and much of what has happened in the past – she’s looking forward to the season ahead. “(I’m) excited to see the team improve each week,” she

said. Returning letter-winners from last season’s 5-17 team include Sydnee McGlothlin, Shaina Cook, Madison Endsley, Madison Winters, Sam Fulte, Madison Foster and Alissa Sumpter. Peters said her goals are to focus on teamwork this year. “To play together as a team,” she said. “And perform at the best of our ability.” Orrick opens the season with a rough schedule of three road games before playing in front of the home crowd. They start at West Platte on Sept. 5, at Cass-Midway on Sept. 10 and at Lone Jack on Sept. 12.
