The time at Concordia R-2 High School for five students comes to an end this Friday. For these students they will soon leave home behind to traverse the world as college students. They recently sat down to discuss their future plans and give advice to younger students. For Emily Small, daughter of David and Judy Small, of Concordia, the thing she’ll miss most about CHS is seeing familiar faces day in and day out. She also said she’ll miss her teachers, since students are very close to their teachers. “Just missing like old friends, old faces,” said James Sherman, son of Mike and Katie Link, of Higginsville. Nora Faris, daughter of

Paul and Betty Faris, of Concordia, said the support system of Concordia as a community is what was the biggest impact for her. She said there are a lot of people in the community who are behind the success of students. The students also participated in a range of ex-

tracurricular activities while at the school, including athletics such as football, basketball, softball and cheerleading, and also organizations such as Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), Family Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA), student council and National Honor Society (NHS). While their time at CHS has been an enjoyable experience the students are excited to be going to college. “I’m ready to start doing classes that will apply to me,” said Hailey White, daughter of Stuart and Barb White, of Concordia, adding she plans on studying nursing, eventually becoming a nurse practitioner. “I am beyond excited,” said Rachel Treece, daughter of Debbie and

Alan Treece, of Concordia. Faris added she’s ready for some more professional opportunities, such as study-abroad programs or internships. Through the opportunities for dual-credit classes and dual enrollment at CHS the students have al-

ready taken some core college courses. Their education from these courses have allowed them to potentially start as sophomores rather than freshman due the amount of credit hours taken. They also said there is a standard of excellence for all students at the school — students are encouraged to take dualcredit along with a challenging course load. “You take on a lot more responsibility as the teachers trust you,” said Sherman. “If they need something you’re the person they go to because they trust you,” added Small. “We do get to do a lot of extra stuff that people don’t get to do, which is really fun.” Students also had advice for the underclassmen who will continue at CHS

for a few more years. “Put forth as much effort throughout your high school career because colleges obviously see your transcripts,” said Treece. “Since we’re a small school teachers are able to give you individual help and once you’re at college (continued on page 6)

Don’t overload, they said. “Enjoy your high school years because they do go by,” said Sherman. “Yeah, you may come from a town where the closest thing to a high-rise is a grain elevator, but when it comes down to it, your world is as big as you make it,” added Faris. ”The opportunities you take for yourself are going to expand where you’ll see yourself in your future.”

SPLHS seniors say balance is key to success

Seniors at Saint Paul Lutheran High School not only reflect Concordia, but also the globe — and graduation only seems to be the beginning for the Class of 2014. From plans to study chemistry to education and religion, these four students were shaped by their high school careers. Angelika Paul — who moved from Great Falls, Mont., but originally hails from South Africa — said she’s happy about her and her family’s choice of school. “My dad was looking for a better high school for me,” she said. “(I’ll miss) being able to be involved in so many different things. And at Saint Paul, everybody knows each other.” Each of the students will miss the extra-curricular aspects of the school. Tian (Emma) Zhao played soccer, participated in track and field, yearbook, drama and math team.

Hadley Rolf played every sport available, and Bejamin Hayter participated in track and choir. “I’m really going to miss playing sports,” Rolf said, adding keeping up with everything was a challenge. “It’s really time consuming, because I have to make sure that I focus on studies and make sure that I have time for sports and friends and everything.” But Rolf will miss another social aspect of SPLHS — dorm life. Although she lives at home,

in Alma, she and other students still spend time in the dorms. Zhao — who moved to the U.S. from China — spoke about the friends she’s made in the past 3 ½ years, including faculty. “I’ll miss the teachers and all my friends,” she said. “The teachers are all very nice here. When I first came here they were being very nice to me. I felt welcome and felt that I wouldn’t get homesick. I made a lot of friends here during these many years.” Hayter spent only two years studying at SPLHS. He came in the middle of his sophomore year. After skipping a grade and graduating in December 2013, he’s already begun his college career. While he’s already moved on to a new chapter in his life, there are still high school activities he misses. Early graduation meant giving up soccer. However, he has been able to continue choir since beginning school at Concordia University-Nebraska, in Seward. “It took hard work, be-

cause I haven’t always been a good student,” Hayter explained. He hopes to become a pastor, which means there are seven years ahead of him instead of four. “Saint Paul pushed me to my full potential. I wouldn’t be

Hadley Rolf able to do what I’ve done … without the help of my teachers and staff at Saint Paul.” For Paul, the challenge in having a successful high school career — like Rolf — was balance.

“Once my junior and senior year hit there was more school work, and I was involved in more after-school (activities) than I was before,” Paul said. “So it was time consuming, trying to fit everything in my day and still get to bed relatively early.” Zhao’s main challenge was using English daily, although she already spoke the language. “It’s not very difficult for me, but it takes some time,” she said. Traveling across the world for her high school education prepared Zhao for her plans to continue her education. She wants to study chemical engineering at Northeastern University, in Boston, Mass. “I will be excited … to go to college, and everything is new, but I think I will still miss Saint Paul and all the people here,” she said, saying her advice to underclassmen is twofold: work hard and enjoy. “Try your best, and enjoy yourself.”

Paul and Rolf will both move to Concordia University-Wisconsin after graduation. Rolf plans to study pharmacy there as she continues to play soccer. “I’ve always enjoyed chemistry and science classes,” she explained. Both of the girls say being involved in high school is important, but equally important is balancing all aspects of the experience. “Be involved and do as much as you can,” Rolf said. “Make sure you make time for friends, but also stay on top of your studies. Balance everything well.” Paul agreed, saying involvement also makes it easier to make friends. She plans to major in secondary education/social studies at university. After graduation she’ll spend two weeks in South Africa with her family and a group of students from SPLHS. “That’s our international trip this year. I’m (continued on page 13)

More than 60 colleges and universities nationwide offer ProStart students course credit and scholarships for completing the two-year program, which prepares students for foodservice industry careers. Santa Fe grads eager for next chapter by Sarah Reed MANAGING EDITOR

For three seniors of Santa Fe High School, in Alma, transitioning to the next phase of their lives isn't daunting. It's exciting. But as Morgan Bishop, Jessie Drake and Kiley Williams look back, they do so with a sense of longing. “We'll mostly miss our friends,” Drake said. “We've always been so close since there are so few in our class. I'll miss seeing them all the time.” Twenty-five students make up the Class of 2014. Most of them have attended school together since childhood. “So many of us are going so many different directions,” Williams said. “We're probably not going to see each other again until maybe a reunion or in passing.” Bishop said she'd miss playing sports. Throughout her high school career she played volleyball and still continued with basketball and softball this year. “Softball I'll miss more

than anything,” Bishop said. Although participating in athletics might not be in Bishop's future plans, the experience is what will take she and Drake on their education paths. Both will pursue the field of physical therapy. The athlete wanted to commute the first year because of her close family ties. “It's hard for me to leave them,” she said, smiling. “But I am ready … to be on my own. I, for sure, am coming back here after college.” Drake, who said she's also had physical therapy sessions due to athletics, said she fell in love with the

practice. She'll move to St. Louis and attend Maryville University. “Some of my goals, I don't know that I could live here,” Drake said. “So I'm going to see, as I do clinicals and stuff, what I want to do in the field of physical therapy.” Living in St. Louis will be a drastic change for the senior, who said she will miss the area but is ready to move on. “I'm nervous, but I'm ready,” Drake said. “I spent 13 years here. I think it's time that I need to broaden my horizons. I love this area, but I'm ready to take on the challenge.” Williams will take a completely different route than her two classmates ― though one that reflects this area's economy. “I've always been a big ag kid, and I didn't really know what direction I wanted to go in ag,” she said. Participating in FFA influenced the self-proclaimed “ag kid,” and after a lot consideration she chose a path. Williams

Kiley Williams plans to attend the University of Central Missouri, in Warrensburg, where she'll study ag business. “I'll be sad to leave, but at the same time I'll be happy to just kind of experience something different from what I've been experiencing,” she said. “After I graduate from college I'm going to come back and live around here, but I'm giving myself a little bit of time to be in a big city or town and experience other things other than the small-town life.”

The three students are the top three of their class, academically. For each of them it was a challenge, but one well worth the effort. While juggling extra-curricular activities with school work, they also took upperlevel courses that demanded more difficult work. “That's been the hardest thing is staying determined,” Drake said. They also said they were motivated by high expectations. “We just naturally knew that we were expected to do very well in school … so we've all been trying super hard to keep that going,” Williams explained. The girls' advice to underclassmen is just that: keep striving toward excellence. Bishop believes setting a goal will give students the momentum they need for success in high school. “I wanted to be at the top, and I had to fight for it.
