Financial planning f or young adults Graduating from high school is an exciting time for most seniors, who might be entering the next chapter of their lives with some timidity, but also with a sense of eagerness. But one major aspect of a young adult's life shouldn't be taken too lightly – becoming financially independent. According to Trish Savage, a family financial education specialist through the University of Missouri Extension, the biggest financial risk for young adults is to not pay attention to their finances and responsibilities that society expects of adults. “Life is expensive, and financial risk can be reduced if they actually do take it upon themselves to begin learning how to manage their resources

and become financially independent,” Savage said. Through Extension, Savage serves residents of Lafayette and two other counties. She provided a few tips to help young adults start off on the right path. • Learn at home. Young adults can talk their parents about their financial experiences – both positive and negative can be enlightening – routines, methods and strategies that have helped them over the years. • Take a personal finance course whether they are going to college or not. Many communities offer continuing education via libraries, University Extension centers and career centers. Included in the course should be how to create a spending plan based on income.
• Practice by making small financial decisions. Developing consumer skills takes time and practice as well. Learn on the small purchases instead of major ones. • Understand your priorities. Young adults should know the difference between wants and needs and make decisions for spending
money as if it was coming out of their own back pocket – even if they are being supported while attending college with parent funds. Learning to manage personal finances can give one the sense of freedom, rather than being burdened Continued on pg. 6

with debt. But there are several areas of concern that young adults should be aware of. The first, reading all contracts. “Before entering into a contract such as for a rental agreement or cell phone, be sure to read the agreement carefully or ask someone with experience to review it,” Savage said. “Young adults can also ask questions and get clarifications and verbal promises in writing from a manager or decision maker. For example, find out the real value of extended service contract, return policy for security deposit, any additional charges not necessarily mentioned or the cancellation charges involved with any contract.” Identity theft has been a growing problem for years. One of the best ways to counteract that risk is to not carry a social security
card with you. At this point in a young adult's life, there
check the balance regularly; pay off the balance monthly and
“Life is expensive. .” will most likely be a lot of credit card offers. Don't jump at them all. Depending on your level of discipline, Savage says one could be handy and a good way to build personal credit. The convenience, however, opens the door to spending if not managed wisely. “Shop around for a card. Look for one with no or low interest rates,” Savage suggested. “Entry level interest rates often change and even jump drastically after a year.” Other tips include: limit credit card purchases to specific uses, such as groceries or gas; write down each purchase amount or

Katey, You’ve worked hard, studied, memorized, practiced and “impatiently” waited. I am so proud of you and the goals you have accomplished and those you have yet to obtain. Never give up on a dream just because of how long it will take to accomplish it. You’ve been blessed with speed, talent and a passion for life, but above all you is kind, you is smart and you is important. Above all, Trust God and your intuition and practice “The Golden Rule”. May your journey in life lead you down a path of great opportunities. Congratulations! Love Always, Mom and Matt
