From the outset, everyone thought that Tobias was a good boy with a positive future ahead of him: his friends; his Primary School teachers; and most of all his Mum, Caroline. By the time he reaches adulthood he has been arrested, sectioned and treated in a medium secure mental health unit. What went wrong? Other traces Tobias’s life in reverse, from his arrest and sectioning back through to his childhood. A fascinating and intensely moving performance, highlighting the missed opportunities for intervention in his life. The play asks searching questions about the identity of those people who don’t fit into the neat boxes on monitoring forms and whether it needs to be like this for young people of dual heritage? Hallowed Turf Thu 16 Oct / 7:30pm Tickets: £8.50 (£6.50) Hallowed Turf is a story of soldiers, football and heroes... A young man’s dream of becoming a footballer is brought to the front when he meets his hero on a very different front line. This powerful and heart-breaking new play shares the true story of footballing star Walter Tull, the first Black officer to serve in the British Army in World War One, told through the imagined letters of an unknown seventeen year old soldier. This incredible story of new grounds broken, of bravery, friendship and the true horrors of life in the trenches is set to have a wide appeal to regular and new audiences and school groups. From the writer and director of the outstanding Jamaica 50 and Sorry! No Coloureds, No Irish, No Dogs.

Salty Water and Us is a play about the Lascar stories of Bangladeshi immigrants who had an aspiration of returning home but never happened. Soidulla who came from Sylhet to Hooghly Port was recruited with other sailors to work on a ship bound for England. Touba Thu 27 Nov / 7pm Tickets: £4 (£3)

Fringe Event

Punk in Africa Tue 21 Oct / 7pm Tickets: £4 (3) Three chords, three countries, one revolution... Punk in Africa is the story of the multiracial punk movement within the recent political and social upheavals experienced in three Southern African countries: South Africa, Mozambique and Zimbabwe. In these societies, the punk subculture represented a genuinely radical political impulse, playing out against a backdrop of intense political struggle, economic hardship and even civil war. Directed and Produced by Keith Jones, Deon Maas Running Time 82 mins

Touba is the new feature documentary revealing a different face of Islam, one which is so essential to these divisive times. The film chronicles the annual Grand Magaal pilgrimage of one million Sufi Muslims to the holy Senegalese city of Touba. One of the rare films still shot on celluloid film, its breathtakingly vivid cinematography by Scott Duncan and integrated soundtrack elevates it to the level of a humanist film poem. This dynamic and immersive observational film takes us inside the Mouride Brotherhood, one of West Africa’s most elusive organizations and one of the world’s largest Sufi communities. The pilgrims travel from all over the world to pay homage to the life and teachings of Cheikh Amadou Bamba. His non-violent resistance to the French colonial persecution of Muslims in the late 19th century inspired a national movement and doctrine. Until this day, freedom of religious expression through pacifism is still practiced by millions of his followers. These are lessons the world can learn. Directed by Chai Vasarhelyi Running Time 83 mins Language Wolof and French with English subtitles

The Official Launch of Birmingham Black History Month 2014 Fri 26 Sep / 6pm / Admission by invitation only The annual Official Launch of Birmingham Black History Month (BHM) at The Drum in partnership with Birmingham City Council seeks to celebrate achievements, contributions and struggles of African, Asian and Caribbean people within the context of their diversity and heritage. Dance

RDC Youth and The Drum presents

Norms of Conduct, a triple bill of work that focuses on the distinguishing characteristics of human nature; Dance of Possession, Costa Del Sol and What Sexuality Is Love? Mystic and magical, with elements of tribalism and trance, Dance of Possession is part of Rosie Kay’s wider investigation which looks at how anthropological sources can inspire art today. Set to historic recordings from countries as diverse as Colombia, Cameroon and Central Africa. Costa Del Sol is set under the blazing sun of dawn in Marbella. A group of young tourists perform their rites of summer, disrupting a picturesque flamenco postcard with a sacrificial rumpus of explosive and kitschy dance by choreographer Carlos Pons Guerra. Artistic Director Adam Rutherford’s, What Sexuality Is Love? explores the notion of oppression across the world through a breakdown in laws that protect everyday human rights. “An inspiring evening full of finds and surprises from a company packed with new, vibrant young dancers” Phil Preece, Lichfiled Live 2014

The Steve Biko Foundation in association with Jazzart Dance Theatre presents

Biko’s Quest Thu 23 Oct / 7:30pm Tickets: £10 (£8) Earlybird £8 (£6) Suitable for audiences 10+

The Drum and mac Birmingham are thrilled to welcome Afrovibes to Birmingham - a biennial festival that celebrates the finest South African contemporary theatre, music and visual arts. Marking the 20th anniversary of the first democratic election in South Africa, the season promises to illustrate the many voices and experiences of the country, while offering UK audiences and artists the opportunity to engage with visiting performers.

The life, death and legacy of the inspirational anti-apartheid campaigner give us this powerful large cast production that takes the audience on a poignant and emotional journey through danced storytelling. “This one’s a winner… powerful, thought-provoking, moving and unforgettable”- Cape Times Directored by Mandla Mbothwe Choreographed by Jackie Manyaapelo, Ina Wichterich-Mogane and Mzo Gasa

“In 1994 a new nation was born. Since then, our artists have been showing the world that South Africa has stories to tell: stories that speak to the collective memory of who we are. Yet at the same time they weave new narratives that speak of life in South Africa today - stories that link us with the world”

“It is better to die for an idea that will live, than to live for an idea that will die” Steve Biko

GBR Productions in association with the State Theatre of Pretoria presents

Rhetorical Sat 25 Oct / 7:30pm Tickets: £7 (£5) Earlybird £12 (£10) Suitable for audiences 14+ Mamela (meaning to Listen) follows a group of remarkable young women from the Eastern Cape of South Africa, capturing the opinions, experiences and aspirations of those born towards the end of the Apartheid era, the ’bornfree‘ generation. A fusion of European and African theatre, this cutting edge, verbatim piece is moving personal testimony and storytelling, fused with traditional African song and dance to create a compelling narrative for the 21st century. Premiered at the National Arts Festival, Grahamstown in July 2013, receiving a Standard Bank Ovation Award for Innovation and Artistic Excellence.

Thabo Mbeki succeeded Nelson Mandela as President of South Africa in 1999. In Rhetorical his most famous speeches are revisited, laying bare his powers of persuasion (and lack of the same). His often controversial nine years in high office, his style of governance and impact on his citizens are explored through the intriguing, compelling and satirical insights of a colourful (fictional) youth leader, Dada Mokone. Mpumelo Paul Grootboom’s plays are well known to UK audiences: his trilogy of Township Stories, Foreplay and Welcome to Rocksburg have led to his nickname, “The Township Tarantino”. Dada Mokone is played by Presley Chweneyagae, who starred in the Oscar-winning film Tsotsi.
