This was the scene at the Long Branch beach a few short months ago. Sunbathers and boaters arrived daily to celebrate summer in South Etobicoke. As fall approaches, Long Branch transitions from a sun and sand destination to a place where hiking through wetlands or endulging in the comforts of Lake Shore become more of the norm. New restaurants and cafes are opening up and there are signs of more to come. Families pack the parks and playgrounds, and there are always great community events to enjoy on weekends. Long Branch is also home to new condominium and townhome developments, pointing to the neighbourhood’s heightened appeal. So come by land or by lake. Either way, welcome to Long Branch.

Meet Rina, a Lakeview resident who’s doing more than her share to keep Long Branch looking beautiful. Nearly every morning she collects garbage throughout Marie Curtis Park. Rina started as a way to cope with depression. She found that being outside in the fresh air and doing something productive really helped to make her feel better. Rina is all smiles now as she diligently combs the beaches and playgrounds. She even goes so far as to wash and donate discarded or lost children’s clothing. Rina is motivated to continue doing her part for the environment because she wants to leave a better world for her 6 year-old grandson.

VILLAGE OF LONG BRANCH A BRIEF HISTORY Modelled after the seaside resort town of Long Branch, NJ, the area was originally to be named Sea Breeze Park. It was changed two years later in 1886 to Long Branch Park and later incorporated as the Village of Long Branch in 1930. Its hub was centred at Long Branch Ave and Beach Rd, now Lake Promenade. Pictured above is a modern interpretation of the original design for the Village of Long Branch seal

PET PROFILE TICO From Costa Rica to Canada, Tico’s journey finds a happy ending in Long Branch. Found abandoned and sickly as a puppy, Long Branch residents rescued Tico while on holiday. And if you’re wondering... yes, he does love the snow.

Thrive is the embodiment of the shift that can happen within a person when he or she decides to make a significant life change. In this case, it was the decision to embrace a healthier lifestyle which led to the transformation of a successful Greek restaurant into a destination for organic cuisine. Co-owners, Pat Zisis and Chef David Perez, teamed up to bring us Thrive Organic Kitchen. Formerly Kalamata Restaurant, Thrive maintains that comfortable atmosphere that’s essential to any restaurant’s success, but also injects a new energy that’s emblematic of the shift toward a healthier lifestyle. Thrive has become a destination for the health-conscious family. It offers a kids’ menu, along with a number of smoothie options and healthy desserts.

Are you a brunch fan? With menu items like Quinoa Pancakes and Sprouted French Toast, who could resist? Thrive is also fully licensed and offers a selection of organic wine and beer. It doubles as a banquet hall for private parties and also offers catering services. Thrive is among a growing number of businesses along Lake Shore contributing to a rejuvenated, new-look Long Branch. “Hands down, the best thing I’ve done since becoming a dad was joining Long Branch Lodge.” INTERSTED IN BECOMING A FREEMASON?
