From its first campus in 1967 located at James S. Bell Elementary School, to its current campus locations, Humber College has seen tremendous growth over the past 50 years and has contributed greatly to the communities within South Etobicoke. Given its location on the historic Lakeshore Grounds, site of the former Lakeshore Psychiatric Hospital buildings, Humber College has a rich history and holds a unique place within our community. With a focus on education, mental health awareness, indigenous history, and environmental sustainability, the Lakeshore Campus strives to embrace its surroundings and give back to our community. According to Wanda Buote, Principal of Humber College Lakeshore Campus, “Humber is a resource for the community.” Highlighting this commitment to 8

community involvement are events such as Doors Open Toronto, Etobicoke Lakeshore Culture Days, Remembrance Day Service, the Pan Am Games Torch Relay, and recently the Kick-Off to Canada Day event which drew upwards of 1,400 people to the Lakeshore Campus, many of whom were local families. “We like to utilize our students’ knowledge and skills to help solve issues and meet the needs of the community,” explains Buote. In addition to student internship programs for local businesses and community volunteer opportunities, Humber Lakeshore Campus continues to integrate into our community through development initiatives like the GARDENS Pod Project which engages local residents, agencies, and faith groups to plant gardens and donate food within Ward 6 to address food security.

One way to better understand Humber’s history and its impact on our community is to visit the Lakeshore Grounds Interpretive Centre located in room WEL104 of the new Student Welcome and Resource Centre at the corner of Lake Shore & Kipling. The Interpretive Centre aims to interpret the natural and built heritage of the Lakeshore Grounds and to engage the surrounding community through exhibitions and cultural programming. The Student Welcome and Resource Centre marks new development at Humber and is part of a larger initiative that has seen new buildings added to the Lakeshore landscape. One of these is the new Fitness Centre which offers affordable memberships to community members as well as students. In the past 50 years, Humber College has produced over 200,000 graduates. Among the

notable Lakeshore Campus alumni are Vincent Lam, Physician and Author (Creative Writing, 2003); Laila Biali, Professional Pianist, Singer/Songwriter, Performer and Recording Artist (Music, 2002); Jill Andrew, Scholar, Columnist, Activist and Community Change Agent (Child and Youth Worker, 1998); Rumeet Billan, President and CEO Viewpoint Leadership (Human Resources Management, 2006); and Mark Saunders, Chief of Police, Toronto Police Service (Police Foundations Leadership, 2008). As Humber students and staff return to the Lakeshore Campus for the 2017/18 academic year, join them in celebrating 50 years of positive contributions to our community. DARKNESS INTO SUNSHINE: THERE IS NO MAP If I were to offer you $100 to explain what these five words mean – denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance –you’d feel richer, right? These are the five stages of grief. Maybe you’d mention their creator, Dr. Elisabeth Kubler-Ross, and how the stages are an easy, helpful step-by-step way to identify how well people are dealing with death, grief and moving forward. Nope. Kubler-Ross interviewed hundreds of dying people throughout the late 1950s and 60s. During her hospital rounds, the American-Swiss psychiatrist asked terminal patients what they were feeling, what they needed, and how healthcare could be better and more humane. She documented how people, young and old, feel as they die and what they want, particularly from their medical team, as their lives and hopes of recovery dim. Yes, this woman was a bright light in a dark place. Kubler-Ross, who died in 2004, is considered a hospice pioneer. As a funeral director, I am constantly reminded that when people feel awkward or uncomfortable (i.e., friends and family tasked with comforting someone who’s grieving), we resort to empty clichés (“He wouldn’t give you more than you can handle!”) or we focus erroneously on which “stage of grief” the person 12

is experiencing and whether that stage is appropriate, timely and/ or healthy. Kubler-Ross would spin in her grave if she knew what we’d done to her compassionate and insightful discoveries. Her work was about dying not grief. Yet every day I witness the good intentions of good people bruise the broken hearts of people they’re supposed to be helping. Weekly, there’s the frail elderly widow told to “keep busy.” The middle-aged spouse and father advised to “be strong and keep going.” And then there are the devastated, often hysterical parents told they can “always have another baby.” There’s no playbook, step-by-step, checklist or metric to chart how fast someone is grieving, healing and moving into the

new normal. There are days when I wish there was a perfectly drawn map so I could tell that widow, father, or blank-eyed parent they’re almost through; that they’re coming out of the shadows and will soon feel sunshine again. But I can’t. Instead, I listen and I don’t rush. Grief is a lonely and long journey. Grief is also a personal and private experience that demands expression. As much as our culture encourages us to rush through or avoid painful and uncomfortable

feelings, grief takes its time and is an extremely patient teacher. Loss does break us down. But loss also breaks us wide open, better able to give and receive five gifts we all need: love, joy, peace, belonging and comfort. Brad Jones has been a funeral director for over 25 years and runs locally-owned, commission-free Ridley Funeral Home (3080 Lake Shore Blvd., across from Humber College) in Etobicoke. HEAT STROKE FOR PETS

Summer is still here! Please make sure to leave your pets at home when running your back-to-school errands rather than keeping them in your vehicle. Keeping the windows open in your parked car will not keep your pet cool enough. Heat stroke is the most severe form of hyperthermia (high body temperature) and can be fatal. Confinement in a poorly ventilated small space and high humidity create the perfect environment, with short-nosed, obese, older and dark haired animals being at

higher risk. Dogs and cats that are outdoors and active are also susceptible. Providing shade and fresh water at all times is helpful for your outdoor furry friends. Signs of heat stroke include weakness, panting, dark, red gums and an elevated body temperature greater than 39.7°C. Heat stroke is a medical emergency so please seek veterinary care immediately if you suspect your dog or cat is affected.
