CKO KICKBOXING OPENS FIRST CAN

CKO Toronto Members

Are you one of those people who has tried every type of fitness or workout regiment under the sun? Maybe you’re not much of a fitness buff at all. Perhaps you feel fit but don’t really work out at all anymore. Well, 2018 is upon us and that means it’s time for a fresh start to achieve those fitness goals. If you decide you’d like to try something new and exciting to kick off the new year, consider a visit to CKO Kickboxing.

CKO Kickboxing has its origins in New Jersey. That’s where Teeter, a CanFitPro Certified Personal Training Specialist, was first exposed to the CKO brand.

Owners, Tina Teeter and Michael Camphausen, have opened CKO’s first Canadian location and decided to bring this unique blend of kickboxing techniques and cardio training to Long Branch. They’ve met with great success so far, with satisfied members praising the family oriented approach to fitness with powerful testimonials such as this:

Camphausen, originally from South Africa, came to Canada in 1994 in search of a new adventure. The IT and Business Operations professional first saw CKO Kickboxing while on a business trip to Jersey City, NJ, and took his first class when travelling for work in Tampa, FL.

“This is the best place to workout,” says Vanessa, a CKO Toronto Member. “The trainers have made me feel so comfortable from the first day on and always take a genuine interest in my fitness goals! The workouts change every day and I have seen pretty dramatic results. I highly recommend CKO Kickboxing. They’ve helped me to love working out again!” 8

“I was sold on the ideology and family approach to fitness training that makes CKO so different from everyone else,” Teeter explains. “In 2016, I started the process of bringing CKO Kickboxing to Canada!”

“I could not believe how quickly the hour went by,” says Camphausen of his first CKO experience. “It was a full body workout and I loved it.” You don’t need to have any kickboxing experience to take a class at CKO. An introduction to the various kicks and punches precedes each class. Since everyone has their own heavy bag, participants work out at their own pace.

NADIAN LOCATION IN LONG BRANCH “You’re using muscles you don’t normally use,” Teeter explains. “There’s no workout like this.” Gloves must be worn during workouts. You may bring your own or they are available for purchase at CKO. Sign up for their Triple Play Trial which includes a pair of starter boxing gloves along with three classes for $29.99. It’s recommended you wear loose fitting, comfortable gym clothes. Since you’ll be kicking a lot, shorts are encouraged. Indoor athletic footwear like running shoes must be worn. Bring a towel and some water because you’re going to sweat...a lot!

DREAM, RISK, CREATE. Are you stuck? Don’t stop. The worst thing you can do is stop when you’re stuck. I grew up in the country and when the truck got stuck in the field you didn’t stop. You rock back and forth. You get people on the back bumper and the front bumper. You need others to help push and pull. My family tribe, Douglas, has a motto and it’s simply: “Forward”. So you might be stuck in your life and you’re tempted to stop, but you need to move forward. You’re asking, “What way is forward?” Forward is the direction that bravery is required. What direction is going to require your courage? Likely, that is the direction in which you need to go. So reach out to friends, family, or a community if your truck is stuck and ask them to help push and pull you out so you can move forward. Be strong, be courageous, move forward. Dream, Risk, Create.

Me-Time. Luxury Or Necessity?

Once the indulging of the festive season is over, I start thinking about how to recover from the sugar overload and leap into the new year with renewed energy, enthusiasm, and commitment to live my best life and be my best self. LIFE’S UNDERTAKING Ahead by a Century Canadians showed a deep affection and open sorrow for the passing of The Tragically Hip’s talented songwriter and frontman, Gord Downie. In the aftermath of his death, people across the country were inspired to come together, sing his songs with joy and tears, and openly mourn the loss of “Canada’s poet.” Gord Downie’s ability to show us glimpses of who we are as a country while inspiring us to grow beyond the shadows of cruel and misguided policies (Downie was a scathing critic of the residential school system) is a trait attributed to all great artists and leaders: the ability to honour the past, stay grounded in the present, and look to the future with hope and faith. Canada absolutely is a better country because Gord Downie was one of us. He chose to share his blessings – his great talent and passion – with Canadians who joyfully helped spread The Tragically Hip’s music into the world. Our tremendous gratitude for Gord Downie’s contributions makes Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s comments about his passing all the more alarming and inappropriate. “We are less as a country without Gord Downie in it,” is simply untrue. When someone dies, there is a loss. Life will never be the same. But neither a country nor a family are diminished. Instead, when death visits us and takes one of our loved ones, we are tasked with the honour of picking up the torch, the bright light of that person’s life, and marching that flame into the dark so we can bring light to hidden corners. As a funeral director I see the gap in people and in families when one of their beloved clan dies. I also see and rejoice in watching those same peo12

ple gather strength and express hope and faith in the future. Individuals, whether making up a family or a country, eventually come to the realization that they are better people for knowing and loving the person they mourn and miss. You really are ahead by a century if you already know, irrespective of what our culture and Prime Minister tell you, that a death in the family does not diminish you. Rather, death reminds us of how beautiful we are. Death reminds us that your loved one’s most beautiful attributes are gifted to you. The lessons you now carry are yours to spread into the world as if they were notes of beautiful music. Gord Downie taught us that the songs we carry inside have the potential to remind us of who we are and what we still have time to become. May the light and music of the Holidays shine upon you and those you love. Brad Jones has been a funeral director for over 25 years. He is president and owner of commission-free Ridley Funeral Home (3080 Lake Shore Blvd W). New Year, New You! But what’s wrong with the you now? It’s great to set goals to better aspects of your life, whether it be your health, career, relationships, finances or behaviours. However, it’s important to embrace and have love for the you today! Many new year’s resolutions fail, likely because they are too grand, they aren’t a priority, or you don’t have the tools to execute them in the long run. While January 1st often feels like a fresh start for people, it’s important to think ahead to the changes that you want to make, and start making gradual changes today. P.S. What better improved health? 14
