Q&A with PHIL LECONTE We interviewed Phil LeConte, the What is your vision for the Festival Executive Producer of the Port in the future? Credit Comedy Festival to get the scoop on its origins... “My vision for all events that I produce is that they continue to grow, What made you pursue a career in not necessarily in size, but just get comedy and performance? better in some way every year. I would love to see it expand a little “When I was in high school, I but that takes time and demand learned how to juggle and was from the community.” involved in school pep stuff so I found myself on stage a lot. I think that was where it started. And then there was a fairly big Buskers festival in my home town of Waterloo. That’s where I caught the Busker bug that lead me to more performing and variety entertainment. From there, comedy was a natural step.”

SELF-CARE YOU ARE WORTHY We live in a society that is chronically plugged in. Taking time to stop, breathe, and restore is often on the back burner of the “things to do” list. However, it is so important to refuel our inner batteries and take time for self-care. It is a practice and requires dedication, attention, and awareness. How can we then transition awareness of the need for a time-out and love into actionable self-care? By observing the yogic discipline of saucha. Saucha combines sacredness, cleanliness, and purity. To fully embrace saucha, practice with devotion and make the care of yourself a sacred action. This purifying process is a gift to your body and higher self. When we set the intention of self-love and pay attention, each simple step can become a divine hounouring rippling into the hearts of those all around.

“Self love is an ocean and your heart is a vessel. Make it full, and any excess will spill over into the lives of the people you hold dear. But you must come first.” - Beau Taplin, Self Love Practice self love on Sunday Feb. 12th from 2-4pm with a special Acupuncture - Restorative workshop at Branch Yoga & Wellness. ---

CANADA GEESE TEACH LOVE Recently, my father and I drove down to Florida. It was a quiet trip interrupted only by the blue flashes of Trump signs and the sad, clear honking of Canada geese. Most birds, not just swans, mate for life including our humble, love-them-or-loathe-them Canada geese. These massive and obnoxious feathered creatures spend their entire lives surrounded by a flock of family. Perhaps that’s what makes them so confident and bold; the birds know they are not alone. That is, until their mate dies. My father’s wife died three years ago. He and Joan were snowbirds for over 12 years. Every year they wintered in Florida and every year they came home. Together. Dad and Joan were long snowbirds and lovebirds, and their flock was the two of them. That is, until Joan died. What makes grief so toxic and cruel, especially in such a death-avoidant “keep smiling, keep busy” culture, is that its darkness isolates us and promises we are alone in our suffering. But we are not alone. When a goose (female) or gander (male) loses its mate, their signs of grieving are disturbingly human. The widowed bird hangs its head, loses the desire to eat, and shows signs of apathy and confusion. Sound familiar? The Canada goose reminds us about the importance of gathering support when we are grieving and working hard to 12

mend our broken heart. Like the geese, we have a tendency to isolate ourselves when we’re in pain. Most people choose to stay grounded, silent and still, especially if you’re a man in his 40s like me or a man in his 70s like my dad. Until our arrival in Florida, I had never seen my father cry. Despite being a funeral director for over 25 years, I rarely give myself permission to cry. I know none of my six children have ever seen me cry. (Yes, my father taught me well.) Yet the tears in Florida broke me down, opened me up and brought my father and me closer together. Perhaps Joan was blessing us with one final gift and sprinkling hope and strength on her favourite snowbird and lovebird, my dad. When we are grieving the death of our loved one, we are embarking on a journey through unpredictable weather and unknown territory. No one needs, or should, journey through grief alone. So be a goose: find your flock. And we’re all members of the same flock. We have lost people we love. For my father, it’s his wife. For me, it’s my mother. For my children, their grandmother. For my assistant manager, Lindsey, it’s her father. When we’re grieving it’s imperative we seek out compassionate and loving listeners. Why? Look to the sky. Those wild and precious geese are guiding us toward warm, loving sunshine.

Entrepreneurs and life-long friends, Jacqueline Sousa (left) and Kayla Hetherington (right), have added a dash of glamour to Long Branch with Jaja Spa. Nestled between Starbucks and TD Bank in the Watermark condo building, the pair are helping to elevate the up-and-coming retail landscape along the Lakeshore. Neighbours since the first grade, Sousa and Hetherington still live two streets apart from one another in the Queensway and Hwy 10 area. They grew up watching their grandfathers run their own businesses and both dreamed of a day when they, too, could become entrepreneurs. Both attended Sheridan College’s Institute of Design & Technology for Esthetics which afforded them the opportunity to gain hands-on, real-world experience. After having worked separately in different salon/spa environments, the pair decided to pursue their original dream of working together in their own spa. Jaja was born. “The goal of our spa was to encompass an elegant, cozy escape where beauty needs can be taken care of within a glam work environment,” comments Hetherington. “Our services are designed to pamper and encourage women to take care of themselves in small ways, whether that is coming in for a quick eyebrow wax or a full day spa package. We customize our services to meet the needs of our clients.” (cont’d on page 18) LOVE WHERE YOU LIVE

17

Always curious to know what business owners think of the neighbourhood, we asked Hetherington and Sousa, why Long Branch? “We couldn’t be more happy with the location we chose for our first business venture,” Sousa explains. “Located conveniently steps away from the lake and directly beside Starbucks, Long Branch Village has been nothing but supportive and welcoming.” The spa is 650 square feet, has three pedicure stations, three manicure stations, a waxing room for full body waxing and a facial/ massage room. Jaja also offers eyelash extensions to enhance the length of your lashes as well as 3D microblading to extend the shape and length of your eyebrows. Planning a special occassion this year? The ladies at Jaja Spa love to party! Start your bachelorette, birthday, or girls’ night on the right foot. Since the month of February is all about love, the ladies at Jaja Spa are giving back to their clients by offering a hydrating facial, a 30-minute scalp massage, and a manicure for $99.00 plus a chance to upgrade to shellac for an extra $10. ---
