Welcome to our first edition of 2017! At Fiat Lux, we’re all about supporting local businesses and connecting communities. We’ve been doing so with this publication since 2015. Now we’re branching out into Port Credit to profile the people and businesses that make that community so vibrant. This will give us the opportunity to promote local merchants in Long Branch and the neighbouring communities in South Etobicoke to our readers who live west of us along the Lakeshore. It’s going to be a great year! Thank you for reading, Roger Tumminieri, Editor Etobicoke Lakeshore Press

STICK TO YOUR VISION It’s that time of year again when we put our best intentions forward and resolve to make life changes, some more monumental than others. Our advice for those New Year’s resolutions? Keep them simple. Make sure your goals are actually achievable. It’s great to dream, but a little realism can go a long way. Here are a few tips that will help you stay on track with your Health & Wellness goals for 2017...

1

KNOW YOURSELF There’s nothing worse than letting yourself down. Be bold when setting goals but be sure to know your abilities. Resolving to become an astrophysicist without a morethan-solid understanding of calculus just isn’t reasonable. Know your limits and strive to push your boundaries. Just do it in a manner that’s actually achievable so as not to set yourself up for failure.

2

NAVIGATE THE PEAKS & VALLEYS Nothing worth doing is always easy. There will surely be ups and downs, so keep the faith. Believe in yourself and know that you can achieve your goals. Don’t ask for permission or seek the approval of others. That takes the power away from you and puts it in other people’s hands. Remember, these are your resolutions - you’re in control.

3

BE ACCOUNTABLE Since you’ve chosen goals that are achievable and you’re in control, be sure that you’re accountable to yourself. Measure and celebrate your successes and whatever you do, don’t make excuses. 6

EVERYTHING YOU NEED

With mild temperatures early in the winter season, vaccination against the flu may not have been top of mind. Now with the colder temperatures here, it is the perfect time to think about getting vaccinated, if you haven’t already done so. The flu season typically runs until the end of March and you want to make sure you start the year off healthy and happy! Come in and speak with our pharmacy team for further information. We have a pharmacist on duty during all opening hours! ---

WHAT ARE REGENERATIVE

MEDICINE INJECTIONS?

Not just for celebrities, the uberwealthy, or elite athletes, regenerative medicine injections are now available locally to help treat a wide range of conditions from chronic pain and sexual health issues to various cosmetic applications. Karmy Clinic in Port Credit is home to a team of highly experienced interventional pain physicians who offer a new way of doing medicine by way of Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injections. In layman’s terms, blood is extracted from the patient, spun in a centrifuge to super-concentrate platelets which are then injected back into the body to regenerate and repair injured tissue. PRP injections are used to treat a host of medical issues including spinal and joint pain, chronic migraine headaches, erectile dysfunction, female urinary incontinence and hyperhidrosis to name a few.

They are also used to treat various cosmetic conditions, namely thinning hair, Vampire facials and facelifts, acne, as well as skin, scar and cellulite treatments. Procedures are non-invasive as no incisions are necessary. PRP injections are excellent alternatives to surgery and are effective pain management tools especially if you’ve exhausted other options like medications or cortisone shots. For more information about regenerative medicine, the best thing to do is connect with the physicians at Karmy Clinic. Their highly trained and professional staff can guide you towards the best possible treatment options for you or your family members. SUPERFOOD TIPS

FROM THE FIX + CO. Here are a few superfoods that you should incorporate into your diet to make 2017 your healthiest year yet: Activated Charcoal Great if you want a good cleanse. Activated charcoal absorbs unwanted substances in the stomach and intestines. This is also known as a hangover cure but can also be used lightly in smoothies. Turmeric Root This magical root has powerful anti-inflammatory effects and is a very strong antioxidant. You can use it in soups, stews, cold-pressed juices, dressings, and even hot drinks. We use it in our Coldpressed Juice Fixer Elixir and our Hot Turmeric Late. Fermented Food (Natural Probiotics) What’s good for your gut is good for your body. Having the proper balance of gut bacteria and enough digestive enzymes helps you absorb more of the nutrients in the foods you eat. It will introduce beneficial bacteria into your digestive system and help the balance of bacteria in your digestive system. This will help with diseases, improve bowel health, aid digestion, and improve immunity! You can find this in pickles, sauerkraut, and kombucha. The Fix + Co.

DO’S & DON’TS FOR 2017

Happy New Year!

The word on the street is that 2017 will be the culmination of all the challenge, change, and seedplanting from the past 5 years. Thank goodness - what a ride it’s been for us all! To help you harness this power into a greater sense of peaceful rhythm, financial, spiritual, and creative abundance, here are a few Do’s & Don’ts to practice regularly until they become your proclivity:

DON’T

Dwell about

Do you see and feel the difference? Your language is important! Change your words when you catch yourself. Turn up the volume by simmering in the good-feeling vibes of what you want as if it’s already done, talk about it and get excited about it regularly. Smile more, skip more, meditate, practice yoga and do things that make your heart & soul sing. Dream big and live happy!

in worry or upset what you don’t have.

Blame others or circumstances for what’s not going right in your world. Speak in negative terms - unless you feel like having a miserable day, then by all means knock yourself out and enjoy knowing you can make a different choice later or tomorrow.

DO

Set 3 new intentions for what you want to Feel, Do, or Have in your experience this year. State out loud and on paper WHY this is important to you. Only speak in the affirmative, ie. “I love the feeling of clarity because of the sense of power, focus and purpose it brings me.” As opposed to, “I want clarity so I don’t feel like I’m running around banging my head against the wall all the time.” 18

AT HOME

2017 Real Estate Market Forecast The GTA housing market has broken many sales records in 2016, and if December is any forecast for 2017, it doesn’t look like it will be slowing down any time soon. Previously, in the weeks leading up to Christmas, sales in the Toronto Housing Market have historically been lower compared to the sales for the rest of the year. However, this year in December, we were still seeing multiple offers on houses taking place right up to Christmas! The 20%+ price growth increase from 2015 to 2016 was largely due to the lack of houses for sale in the GTA, and it appears that 2017 will be no different. Here’s a look back at some highlights from 2016... 20

FAMILY MATTERS People rarely want to have coffee with me. At least at first. As a funeral director I’m a bit like a dentist. No one is happy to see me but the services I offer are important and often urgent. And yes, my services can be perceived as expensive, mysterious and depending on how you feel about funeral directors, down-right shady. When I greet you in the lobby I’m well aware that I am likely meeting you on the worst day of your life. The families I meet usually stagger in weighed down by shock, overwhelm with tremendous suffering. Many come in perfectly put together but most are apologetic for showing up in sweat pants. I promise you: we don’t notice or judge how you look. We’re more interested in what happened, why you’re here, who you want us to look after and what you want us to do. Most funeral directors appreciate how the whole process can feel shady. You’re sharing private and painful information with a stranger who’ll eventually ask for your trust and your money. It’s no wonder most people decline politely when a funeral director offers a cup of coffee. You don’t want a coffee. You want to know if you can trust me. You want to know if I’m telling the truth. You want to know if I’m going to rip you off or help you plan a service that, on some level, helps you 22

and your family grieve. So what’s the best way to figure out if a funeral home – and funeral director – has your best interests at heart? Truth is power, so start small. Accept the offer of coffee, tea or water and before you share your story about what happened, ask your funeral director for their story first. Asking questions breaks the ice, helps you feel more in control and empowered, and reveals whether the funeral director is a fit for you, your family and what you need. Some powerful “coffee chat” ice-breaker questions include: -Do you work on commission? -Is this a chain or a locally-owned funeral home? -Are you a full-time funeral director or a full-time salesperson? -Will you be my main contact person at the funeral home or will I never see you again? One of the nastiest feelings in life is to believe you have been cheated by someone you thought had your best interests in mind. Most funeral directors are following a calling or vocation that came to them at a young age. Ask anyone at my funeral home why they work in (freaky, weird, scary, getteased-a lot) funeral services, and they can tell you the exact moment they wanted to become a funeral director. The majority of our industry – pun alert – are lifers.

And no, we don’t do this work for the money. We wear nice shoes, drive nice cars and work out of nice places as a sign of respect for the dead and for people, like you, who want to mourn, celebrate and grieve the people we love and will forever miss. We’re a lot more alike, you and me.

Getting political hasn’t really been our thing thus far at Fiat Lux, but here goes... Curious to get the pulse on what a Trump presidency could mean for Canadian immigration, we interviewed Blayne Kumar, CEO & President of Bright Immigration & Legal Inc. in Long Branch. According to Kumar, immediately following the Trump victory, the Canadian Immigration & Citizenship (CIC) website crashed along with many Canadian immigration lawyers’ websites due to the unexpected volume. “We have received a number of inquiries from newcomers to the US who are very nervous,” explains Kumar. “Many Muslim-Americans have also expressed their concerns given the changing sentiment 26

south of the border. Trump’s expected policies will have an impact on many, especially the illegal immigrants, mostly Mexicans who have spent their childhood in the US,” Kumar continues. “Another area has to do with many young people in the US who are looking to explore school options in Canada. Many of the major schools in Canada have seen a sizable increase in enrollment and interest.” So, we’re essentially in a holding pattern; waiting to see what policies President Trump will actually implement. It could be a busy year for Canadian immigration lawyers. Bright Immigration & Legal Inc. 3715 Lake Shore Blvd West brightimmigration.com 647-479-8414
