ENTERTAINMENT GALEN WESTON
We met up with Galen Weston on a recent visit to his old stomping grounds. Weston, a graduate of Humber College’s renowned Jazz program, is currently on tour promoting his new CD, Plugged In. He looks back fondly at his time in New Toronto and shares why he’s returned to his musical roots after a long hiatus. After four years at Humber, the Freelton, ON native needed to earn a living. Begrudgingly, Weston decided to put down his guitar to follow more lucrative pursuits. He worked in the construction and finance industries before building his own internet-based company. The man who, as a boy, would play his guitar for ten hours a day, wouldn’t pursue music for another fifteen years.
While on vacation in Greece with his wife and their newborn daughter, Weston’s passion for music was unexpectedly re-ignited thanks to his wife, Sousie. Her passing remark to a musician in a local bar compelled him to offer Weston his guitar. After some arm-twisting, the musician finally convinced Weston to join him. Hours passed without notice as the two played. It was in that moment, sparked by his wife’s timely comment, that Weston knew he had to go back to playing music. Upon his return to Toronto, Weston began construction on Rose Room Recording Studio. He now makes the music he loves and, as he did when he was a boy, once again plays his guitar ten hours a day.
