EDITOR’S NOTE

We’re kicking off 2016 with our annual Health & Wellness edition. If getting fit or living a healthier, more mindful lifestyle are on your to-do list, keep on reading. For those of us living in South Etobicoke, we’re fortunate to have a number of fitness options at our disposal. If you’re the hearty type and don’t mind the cold, lace up those skates and hit the Figure 8 at Sam Smith Park. If bearing the cold isn’t your thing, why not sign up for a bootcamp, take a yoga class (or two), try your hand at indoor rock climbing, or join a spinning class? Physical activity is just one part of living a healthy lifestyle. Diet is arguably the most important component to wellness. Check out our feature on THE FIX + CO; your local source for organic cold pressed juices. While you’re at it, discover our local farmers’ market, learn about reiki, and read our

interview with a local Naturopathic Doctor who outlines 5 easy dietary tips to start you on your way to wellness. For those goal-setters out there, we’ve also included some advice to help you have a great 2016. Be sure to check out our digital magazine for extended content, including an easy-to-make recipe for Valentine’s cookies from The Mix Bake Shop in Alderwood. I’d like to thank our Ad Partners for their continued support, as well as our editorial contributors. As always, I encourage you to support your local merchants and buy local this winter. Thanks for reading, Roger Tumminieri, Editor

WHERE TO START BY: ALISON TUNLEY

2016 has arrived and it’s time to make a change. The first and most important step lies within you. Only you can decide to change and take action toward your personal fitness goals. But making positive lifestyle changes is not something that can be rushed. This is not a quick fix you’re looking for. Instead of planning a complete and instant overhaul, think about creating a roadmap that leads you incrementally towards your ultimate goal. Make just a few changes at a time. This slower approach is much more sustainable.

TOP 5 DIETARY TIPS FATEH SRAJELDIN B.Sc., ND

Dr. Srajeldin recommends the following tips to those who are just starting down the path to health and wellness. 1 Eat 3 balanced meals and 3 small snacks per day. This will keep your blood sugar and energy at normal levels. 2 Refrain from carbonated drinks. The CO2 gas dilates the colon. 3 Drink (don’t sip) 8 glasses of water per day. Sipping leads to frequent urination. Gulp it down. 4 No more added sugar or dairy.

Organic milk is ok, though. 5 Cut the coffee. Caffeine isn’t the problem. Coffee is acidic, which opens the body’s gate to acid-loving disease, bacteria, viruses, fungus, and cancer. It also removes calcium from the body which leads to osteoporosis, high blood pressure, and increased cholesterol.

FINANCIAL WELLNESS TIPS BY: TRAVIS PERRATON, PFP

As an investment and retirement planner, I’ve seen first-hand when people transition out of the work world they often lose some sense of self and purpose. This can have a negative affect on their mental health. So making sure you have a plan that incorporates hobbies and physical fitness contributes to a state of mental well-being. We all know that saving money is important, too. But how important? Is it all about the dollar amount that puts your mind at ease? Typically, the answer is yes, but there are important considerations to make so your money can go further.

• Stay invested. If you’re not, get invested in a long-term strategy. Your time horizon could be as long as 40 years. That’s good. It gives you ample opportunity for your money to grow. • Pay yourself first. • Keep different accounts for different purposes. • Set and refresh your budget regularly. • Scrutinize bills regularly. Look at expenses that can be reduced, modified, or lived without. • Have goals, both short and longterm. This gets you through the tough times in saving. • Clearly understand your credit Getting close to retirement can be card bills and timing. VALENTINE’S DAY IN THE ‘HOOD THE MIX BAKE SHOP DIY VALENTINE COOKIES

INGREDIENTS: 1 cup butter (room temperature) 3/4 cup sugar 3/4 cup brown sugar 2 eggs 1 tsp vanilla 2 1/4 cups all purpose flour 1 tsp baking soda 1/4 tsp salt 1 1/2 cups chocolate chips 3/4 cup chopped nuts (optional) THINGS YOU’LL NEED: Large mixing bowl Electric mixer or wooden spoon Shaped cookie cutter Baking sheet Parchment paper FOR DECORATING: Fondant Piping bag/ziplock bag Piping tips Red, white or pink cookie icing

Attention Dads: Gather the kids and bake up these heartwarming chocolate chip cookies for your favourite Valentine in 20 minutes. See below for the recipe and stepby-step instructions. Yields: 5-6 dozen drop cookies, or 8-10 large 4” heart cookies. Don’t bake? Don’t worry! Register to decorate a giant cookie at The Mix Bake Shop from Feb 11 to 13 for only $8/person. Visit themixbakeshop.com for details or stop in to see Eleanor at 374 Brown’s Line | 647.686.2253

Add flour, baking soda and salt. Beat until smooth and blended. Stir in chocolate chips (and nuts or cranberries if you like). Or be creative and use pink and red coated candies instead. Line a baking tray with parchment paper. Grab a heart-shaped cookie cutter, coat it lightly with flour, and place it on the baking tray. Press about a tablespoonful of dough into the cutter to about 1/2 inch high. Or drop by spoonful onto cookie sheet about 2 inches apart. Bake for 8-10 minutes or until edges are browned. Carefully move cookies to a cooking rack and try not to eat them all before they cool!

INSTRUCTIONS: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a large bowl beat butter, sugars, eggs, and vanilla ‘til light and fluffy. 18

digital: issuu.com/the_el_press

TO DECORATE: With Fondant: Roll red fondant to 1/8, and use the same heart shape cutter to cut out a heart shape. Moisten the back of the fondant with a very light coat of water. Carefully place on cookie. Let dry for 1 hour. Place in airtight bag tied with a bow. With Icing: Place piping tip in piping bag. I like to use the star tip. Place icing in piping bag till half full. Twist bag 3 times to seal top so icing does not spill when decorating. Make small stars along the border of the cookie. Allow to dry for a few hours. Once dry to the touch, place in clear bag and top with a bow. For fun, switch to a small round tip and write a message on the cookie.
