TRADE EXPECTATIONS FOR APPRECIATION

I want to use this article as a platform to encourage entrepreneurs/business owners. A common experience we have is anxiety and depression. The reason? We find ourselves overwhelmed by expectations.

So if you’re losing your peace of mind over disappointment from unmet expectations, try this: trade your expectations for appreciation.

Chances are, you have struggled with feelings of anxiety or depression. The reason why you suffer is because your life doesn’t match your expectations. You thought things would be different, things would be done, they would come through, you would be here, you would be there, etc. Expectations.

CANINE INFLUENZA

Canine influenza has been all over the news recently after 7 dogs were diagnosed for the first time in Canada. This virus is part of the Kennel Cough syndrome which you have most likely heard about. Other common causes of Kennel Cough include Bordetella bacterium, canine parainfluenza virus, and canine adenovirus. Thankfully, vaccinations for all of the above exist! All causes of this syndrome present similarly with a hacking cough, sneezing,

nasal and eye discharge, and rarely pneumonia. All are highly contagious. If your dog develops a cough, keep them isolated from other dogs and consult a veterinarian immediately.

LIFE’S UNDERTAKINGS Love Isn’t Dead If we want to dig up how Cupid fell from grace and funerals fell out of fashion, look to the changing definitions around family and community. We live in a secular society shaped by secular beliefs that rest upon a Christian heritage.

As we rush through life’s moments, we’re shooting arrows into how we give and receive love. Funeral director, Brad Jones, explains why a bad funeral is a lot like Valentine’s Day. Do you love Valentine’s Day? Most people don’t, especially men, people in relationships, and individuals who are single. That pretty much means everyone, on some level, secretly dreads or flat-out detests Valentine’s Day. No one likes being forced to acknowledge a one-day event loaded with big expectations, lots of emotion and plenty of time, energy, and money. Why doesn’t the empty commercialism around Cupid just die and get buried? The same can be said of funerals: why are funerals still happening when so many of us believe the traditions and rituals honouring death are outdated, depressing, and unnecessary? Like Valentine’s Day, a funeral is something no one likes but most of us show up and offer kindness, reconciliation, and friendship. Funerals and February 14th are imperfect opportunities to give and receive love no matter how frigid our hearts and heads. 12

Baby Boomers and beyond are deathfree generations. We may have attended our grandparents’ funerals but apart from limited and sheltered childhood experiences, we’re in new and uncharted waters when someone we love dies. Life is difficult when death demands we take charge of the living and the dead. We look to first-hand experience and don’t see a path or beacon. Our confusion grows when we refuse to look backward and honour death rituals that have helped our earliest and most ancient ancestors care for survivors. How did the species once deal with death? By respecting death as part of life, the dead as worthy of being seen, and the grieving family as community members needing help, hope and faith. While I blame the skull-sized worldview “Me! Look at Unique Me, Me, Me!” for burying our natural desire to gather as family and community when we’re broken and sad, I also hold bad funerals in contempt for our loveless relationship to death. Death isn’t a party. And neither is a funeral. Or even a wake. The celebration of life that’s fashionable these days, whether hosted at a country club or the funeral home, is not a silver bullet for grief. A traditional wake always came after the deceased was taken care of (and seen!), after the family had been

LONGBRANCH.LIFE

shown great care. There was a reason for the order of operations: look after the dead, look after the family, look after our humanity by celebrating the joy of being alive. Like wanting to skip roses, chocolates and making an effort, but still expecting Valentine’s Day to deliver true love, approaching death as something to defang and ignore by pretending we’re only celebrating, leaves us broken hearted. Death is sad. Funerals are tough. But like all tough people, places, and things, funerals are also tender and offer tremendous strength when our hearts are breaking.

Cupid would love all aspects of dying and death. Why? Because each life stage and joyful or sad gathering attended by family, friends and community offer the same box of chocolates: a tender, sweet piece of love for everyone. Brad Jones has been a funeral director for over 25 years. He is president and owner of commission-free Ridley Funeral Home (3080 Lake Shore Blvd) in Etobicoke. Every Valentine’s Day Brad and his wife happily boycott Valentine’s Day and visit the graveyard instead. You’re welcome to contact Brad by calling 416.259.3705 or BradJones@RidleyFuneralHome.com

HEALTH & WELLNESS We are well into the new year now. Have you taken a moment to take stock of your goals for the year? How are you doing with those new year’s resolutions? It is not uncommon to reach some barriers or roadblocks to improving your health, but if you have stumbled, it is no reason to stop! New beginnings can start at any time through the year. Just look at our store, moving to our new home and opening at the beginning of February. If you need that push to get back on track, come in to our store and speak with the pharmacist today.

Achieving good health is definitely a journey and you don’t have to go on that journey alone. Let us help you make that fresh start and reach your goals this year. www.shoppersdrugmart.ca/prescriptions

Research shows that 80% of new year’s resolution fail by February. Is that you? If so, this is a good time to rethink what your goal was. Have you made any attempt to achieve it? If so, did it work? What didn’t work? Can you think of why it didn’t work? Was there anything that came up in the way? Make notes, jot down ideas, brainstorm with yourself. Keeping your answers in mind, move one step further and take action! Call your friend to arrange a weekly walk, send out that email to reconnect with that neighbour, or call your Pharmacist to set up an appointment to review your glucose values. It only takes a few minutes but you will be closer to your goal.

DESIGNER CONSIGNERS Fresh Finds Daily

3509 LAKE SHORE BLVD W / LONG BRANCH www.designerconsigners.ca @designerconsigners

As winter drags on, it’s time to step up the self-care and add some fuel to the fire that’ll keep us warm until spring finally arrives. If it’s starting to feel like hauling on your layers and dragging yourself outside to go places and do things is just too much, try a home restorative yoga practice to bring some steadying energy, space, and inspiration back into your day. If you’ve got a wall and a couple of blankets, you’ve got the tools to create a restorative oasis for yourself. Switch on some gentle, instrumental music (Moby’s Long Ambients is my current go-to), and try

some variations on legs up the wall (pictured) for a few minutes each. Breathe easily, and listen to the sound of your breath to quiet the sound of your busy thoughts...and snow plows.
