NEW: STONEHOOKER BREWING COMPANY They say the best craft breweries are the ones closest to you. Well, if you’re in Long Branch, then you don’t have to go far to discover the newest craft brewery in the neighbourhood.

O N

Stonehooker Brewing Company is set to open soon in Lakeview. Their tap room is something to behold. Made from reclaimed wood, it feels like you’re walking into the hull of an old schooner - the kind the Stonehookers used to sail along the north shore of Lake Ontario between Port Credit and Toronto, pulling up tonnes of stone from the lake to build the booming nineteenth century city we now call home.

T H E

There’s a story to be told here and the folks at Stonehooker Brewing plan to tell it - and offer you a delicious selection of beer while they’re at it. Stay tuned for a launch date. Follow their progress @stonehookerbeer.

...

Appearance: Hazy, pale straw with white loose bubbles that linger Aroma: Pineapple, passionfruit and tangerine. Some cereal from the oats Flavour: Similar to aroma with stone fruit and a little pine Mouthfeel: Creamy and smooth with some tang similar to orange juice Finish: Medium long and smooth with some subtle bitterness that comes back in the end IBU: 40 ABV: 5.4%

South Etobicoke has become a destination for beer lovers. We’ve highlighted a few of our local craft brewers, including a brand new one opening soon in neighbouring Lakeview, called Stonehooker Brewing Co. I couldn’t do all this alone, so I’d like to thank our team of editorial contributors for their excellent submissions this month. One of whom is my wife, Jessica. She writes about her favourite family restaurants in the area and, somehow, manages not to poke fun at me like she did in our last edition. Not to worry, though. Our son, Jaxon, takes a few jabs at Daddy in his monthly Kid Life column.

Welcome to our Food & Drink Edition. This is one of my favourites to publish. It comes with many hardships, like eating out a lot and trying some really great food served up at local restaurants and cafes. Poor me, right? I’ve managed to develop a taste for certain neighbourhood delicacies, namely veal sandwiches, cannoli, pizza, and espresso (and that’s just from Cafe Tutti on Horner). This issue is packed with profiles on local cafes like New Toronto’s The Sydney Grind, and restaurants like Rustic Social House in

If you’re not hungry yet, just keep turning the pages of this, our annual Food & Drink edition. I hope it serves as a useful guide to some of our neighbourhood’s best places to eat and drink. Thanks for reading, Roger

GO TO GIVE I N S P I R A T I O N

I’m a pastor and there is something in my faith that I noticed about Jesus. Jesus ate A LOT! He was always going somewhere to eat, invited somewhere to eat, invited to parties where they would eat. There’s a spot in the Bible in the book Luke where Jesus teaches humanity how and why we’re to be party people. He saw people trying to leverage for a better position. Trying to elevate ourselves over others and exclude who we think shouldn’t belong. Jesus taught that we are to go to parties. Faith and fun aren’t mutually exclusive. Jesus doesn’t us not to party He tells us how to party. One of the principals of being a ‘Party People’ is this, good guests give.

MATTHEW DOUGLAS Pastor

Don’t choose the best seat. I think there is something in us where we want to be significant. We want to matter. We want to be the person people are with. I want that spot, I want to be served. But Jesus says look to be a great guest. When you go to a party go to serve. If you’re a person who is building up others and serving them; and making their lives better it’s amazing how many parties you’re invited to.

Go to give. When you go to a party go to serve. Don’t go to be served but go to serve others. And this part is important. Don’t serve those that can do something for you in return. Serve people who can’t return the favor. Open your circle. This is the great party person rule. Life can be a party but in the party don’t go to be something go to do something. Be a good party guest and give.

3 TIPS TO PREVENT BURNOUT With an uber-busy lifestyle, it’s easy to forget about taking care of number one. We convince ourselves that the day is too short to get it all done, so we skip the important things like food and rest to get it all done. The challenge is that when we stop focusing on self-care, burnout quickly follows and illness rears its ugly head. So this month, let’s take a step back and think about the different ways we can take better care of ourselves. Running 3 new businesses simultaneously, I struggle with this daily and it’s a constant discussion with my husband, A.J., about how to find the balance between getting things done and taking time for self-care. So what can we do to prevent the burnout? Here are a few tips for you to consider:

PRIORITIZE YOUR MEALS BY DOING A MEAL PREP DAY Unless you’re consciously following an intermittent fasting routine, skipping meals can lead to hormone imbalance and unwanted fat storage, not to mention a slew of other issues. Meal prep days help you make healthier choices, as well as better control what and how much you eat. Focus on breakfast and lunch to give you energy throughout the day. Eat healthy fats that burn slower and feed the brain.

ADD OIL PULLING TO YOUR MORNING ROUTINE By swishing oil in your mouth (any kind, but I prefer coconut) for 10-20 minutes first thing in the morning is great for detoxification and energy boosting. It also helps with teeth and gum health.

LONG BRANCH 135 LATTE CHALLENGE L O N G B R A N C H H I S T O R Y

Before I assembly an army of culinary coffee contraptions and tell you about The Great Long Branch 135 Latte Challenge, here is a precursor to the naming of Long Branch that will help set the stage or at least spark some amusing dialogue.

of ocean fish, lobster, and crab delight the senses of their New York counterparts.

The American Long Branch quickly was recognized as The President’s Summer Playground with its Coney Island carousels, amusement rides for the kiddies, and even a Ferris wheel. In fact, one of its beaches is called the Seven Presidents Park and Beach.

With no less than ten cafe establishments here in our Long Branch and dozens in Long Branch, NJ, it is amazing to contemplate that we are all in coffee sync 24-7 and, truthfully, most regions of North and South America and beyond.

Our Village of Long Branch also boasted a Coney Island carousel (we believe it’s now in Port Dover) water slides, a gymnasium, picnic and dance pavilions, and a baseball diamond. It was proclaimed at the time as “Toronto’s Favourite Summer Resort” where fresh water fish such as trout, salmon, bass, and pickerel were in abundance and served to satisfy the refined palettes of its elite guests from Toronto. Hence the slightly higher price of a cup of organic coffee. But is the extra 20 cents worth it? We think so. And so does Andrei Novakovskiy, owner of La Crema Cafe at the Shoppes of Alderwood.

How many of us start the day with a cup of coffee? How conscious is this ritual of ours? Do we ever consider where our coffee comes from and how heavily it may be sprayed with pesticides? A quick internet search reveals just how contaminated coffee can be. Grown predominately in countries where laws against the use of pesticides are arguably less stringent than those here in North America, mass-produced coffee is, unfortunately, sprayed heavily by growers who tend to

DO YOU SELF-PRESCRIBE SUPPLEMENTS? E A S T

Food & Drink; one of my favourite topics. Yes, as a Naturopath I love to both eat and drink! Somewhere along the way, though, it seems that “healthy” eating has become associated with restrictive, time-consuming, difficult to maintain diets. That couldn’t be further from the truth!

O F

I am a firm believer that you can have a solid foundation of health while having balance (note: balance does not mean having a wine glass in each hand). You should first be getting your nutrients from food, however, if you’re avoiding particular food groups you may need to get additional vitamins and minerals in supplement form. Before you start to self-prescribe, check with your Naturopathic Doctor to find out what’s best for you. Supplements are not all created equally, and it’s important that you are taking the right ones for you. If you have any questions, feel to reach out to set up a consult to find out what diet and supplements are best for you!

CHOCOLATE TOXICITY higher amounts of this than semi-sweet or milk chocolate.

P E T L I F E

Valentine’s Day is over, but it’s known to be associated with a spike in the instances of chocolate toxicity…not surprising! Most of us are aware that chocolate is toxic but are unsure of the signs or risks. Dogs develop a taste for chocolate and will seek it out even if it makes them sick! Chocolate contains a compound called methylxanthine along with high levels of fat and sugar. Dogs are sensitive to methylxanthine and unsweetened, dark chocolate contains

Signs of toxicity include nervousness or agitation, elevated heart rate, elevated temperature, abnormal heart rhythms, tremors and even seizures. Severe cases of ingestion can be fatal. Other signs secondary to the high fat and sugar content include gastrointestinal upset (vomiting and diarrhea) or in more severe cases, inflammation of the pancreas which can be quite painful. Regardless of the amount or type of chocolate your pet ingests, please contact a veterinarian immediately.

BREWED LOCALLY Please allow me to divert from my financial tips and speak about something else I love. This month, I’m highlighting four favourite destinations in South Etobicoke for barley, malt, and hops, plus a new one coming soon to Port Credit.

Y O U R

The rise of craft beer in Canada from 2007 until now has been astounding. Just walk into any LCBO and one can stand in awe looking at the variety of options. The names and pictures within the labyrinth of choices along a wall of bottles and cans, complete with hipster-friendly labels and designs, are enough to make any beer lover salivate. Something a Brewmaster once told me is to follow the “When in Rome” practice when trying new flavours. Well, I did just that in South Etobicoke.

TRAVIS PERRATON

Financial Planner

Our community has a very rich craft and micro brew industry; beers brewed in small batches using high quality ingredients, quoting lore and history of a long lost art of Belgian, American, and English brews.

Black Oak Brewing

I’ve now visited a few of these fine establishments. Some serve food and experts can give you tantalizing descriptions of their wares like a Sommelier would for wine. Another very pleasant surprise is how close to us these local breweries are. Here’s a list of what’s brewing in our backyard:

Stonehooker Brewing Company

(75 Horner Ave)

On the way to the Gardiner Eastbound on ramp. Small, intimate space with very knowledgeable staff. Fantastic crew! (866 Lakeshore Rd E)

The closest it gets to Long Branch, this new brewery is coming soon, very soon to the neighbouring community of Lakeview. So when you’re down by the lake, drop in for a taste. Get thirsty, and I’ll see you there.

Great Lakes Brewery

Von Bugle Brewing (249 Evans Ave)

G IN M ON CO SO

(30 Queen Elizabeth Way)

Offering food, a patio, many beer options, and a relaxed, friendly atmosphere.

Located at Evans and Horner, they offer one beer with four ingredients - great taste.

Big Rock Brewery (1589 The Queensway)

Located behind The Burger’s Priest, across from Canadian Tire. Lots of selection here with a handy tasting tool on their website.

FOOD & DRINK. NOT ALL THAT NOURISHES YOUR L I F E ‘ S U N D E R T A K I N G S

One of the bestselling book series of all time is Chicken Soup for the Soul. In North America we’ve gobbled up more than 110 million copies. With over 250 titles in the series, there seems to be soup for everyone everywhere: children with special needs, coffee lovers, military wives, single souls, married souls, teenage souls, cat lover souls. There’s even a Chicken Soup book called Canadian Acts of Kindness. Funeral director Brad Jones wonders why such a popular sugar-and-spice-and-everything-nice brand serves up cold comfort and bad taste to the grieving soul.

Depending on your views about death, grief (private feelings), mourning (public acts of grief like hosting or attending a funeral) and the Chicken Soup for the Soul series, my views about how to best face grief may sound like old-fashioned bad news or wild-side fake news.

There are book lovers and news lovers, and I am the latter. I won’t claim to have read Chicken Soup for the Grieving Soul: Stories about Life, Death and Overcoming the Loss of a Loved One but that doesn’t prevent me from having an opinion about the title.

What truly nourishes and warms the grieving soul is faith, hope, friendship and ritual.

But after more than 25 years as a funeral director, I have gathered a lot of wisdom; which means I know what doesn’t work for men, women and children when they’re faced with, usually trampled over and shattered by, tragedy and loss.

Faith can spring from our religious or spiritual beliefs about the afterlife. Faith can also express itself as confidence in ourselves, our family and the new future that is unfoldIn fact, I am boycotting ever reading this ing. book just because of the title. When someone we love dies, our path is not a mountain climb. The goal of grieving is not to reach a summit of healing where we stand with our foot on the throat of pain, sorrow, regret, anger, loneliness and fear.

The power of ritual has fallen out of fashion, like hand-shaking and talking on the phone, which is a sad consequence of living in a culture that worships fast convenience and shallow connectivity.

Despite what we are told, grief does not unfold in stages. (Elisabeth Kübler Ross was writing about the emotional stages of dying not grieving.)

Ever wonder why we often mutter vague and impersonal “I’m sorry for your loss” phrases that mean nothing? Because we don’t know what to say or do.

THE DANGERS OF FLOOR REPLACEMENT Y O U R H O M E

Floor replacement is one daunting renovation project! The costs of floor replacement can easily climb into the dozens of thousands of dollars, and that’s just the beginning of your headaches. Where do you live while the work is being done? Where do you store your furniture? Will the installers do a good job and take care of your house? How long will it really take? You may have considered these questions, so in this article we will cover some of the more surprising dangers of floor replacement.

HEALTH RISKS

Underneath the floor you see and walk on are the subfloor and structural components which trap potential health hazards within them. This asbestos, pet fur, dust, mold, plaster, rust and so on, don’t pose any danger to you unless they become airborne and contaminate your living space. In some extreme cases, you can even find an asbestos liner directly under your hardwood! Tearing out your existing floor aggressively releases all these toxins directly into your living space.

UNFORESEEN COMPLICATIONS

Home repair projects are infamous for their expense and budgetary overruns. Floor replacement is a major culprit of these unforeseen costs. Once you tear up your floor and look at the subfloor, there is a high likelihood that it is damaged and in need of repair. Most commonly, sections of the subfloor are worn out, rotten, water damaged or even entirely missing. There’s also a chance that your subfloor is wavy, bulged or sunken in places. To do the job right and install your new flooring over a properly flat subfloor, your installer will need to tear up sections of your subfloor in order to level the joists. This will not only add significant costs, it will also expose your family to potentially hazardous dust hiding underneath the subfloor.

POOR INSTALLATION

Unfortunately, the dangers of floor replacement don’t end there; the newly installed floor may have technical complications post-installation. A common culprit is the 24

improper installation of fasteners in the new floor. Fasteners can be of poor quality or sparingly used. Poor quality fasteners can loosen soon after installation, causing squeaks. Cutting corners by not using enough fasteners can leave large spans of unfastened floor boards, which allows for movement that also causes squeaks.

MATERIAL QUALITY

New is not always better. Your existing floor has had time to settle, stabilize and take its final shape. This means that the noise and squeaking you find in your existing floor is predictable, making it easy to locate and silence using our service. When you replace a floor with new materials, you are at the mercy of not only your installer’s skills but the quality of the material you purchased, its transportation, and treatment during storage - all things that you cannot control. The result of poor material quality and handling is that your new floor can warp, expand or contract, loosening and pulling out fasteners. In situations when you absolutely hate your floor or it’s beyond repair, of course we recommend replacement. However, by far most floors can be restored to your heart’s content with our squeaky floor silencing service and a refinishing company. Even when replacing a floor, you can use our service to make sure your subfloor is silenced. If you want to silence your squeaky floors without floor removal or replacement, call Squeak Knights. We have diagnosed and permanently silenced hundreds of floors in the Greater Toronto Area – with no floor removal! Our passion is to help you feel more comfortable in your own home, so don’t be shy to contact us with questions and to book an assessment.

RENOVATIONS & YOUR CREATIVE PROCESS Y O U R H O M E

In the late 1980’s, I was working in Muskoka with a European craftsman, named Ulo Rahusaar. Ulo’s career in Canada began after WWII. He quickly learned English and became a valuable asset on-site as an outof-the-box thinker for many large Toronto projects; Toronto Dominion Centre and the New Toronto City Hall to name a couple. Later, Ulo built his cottage home along with a woodworking shop and retired to Little Whitefish Lake in Humphrey Township. His reputation spread and he continued working, renovating Muskoka cottages. Ulo’s furniture and cabinetry abilities were also exceptional. I was one of the fortunate few to call Ulo a mentor. On one of my early projects, Ulo and I collaborated on a design for a standup bar and my company was featured in Canadian Living Magazine. Ulo passed away years ago, but his legacy of wisdom and attention to detail live on. Ulo would regularly remind me, “50% of the project is in the planning.” I will explain the importance of what I call the creative process when planning your construction project. The creative process is the time it takes for client and contractor to learn and share the same vision and exceed expectations. Being a good contractor means educating the client and managing their experience beforehand. It takes a commitment and long hours of quoting to iron out the details of a project prior to its start. Your renovation is a big deal and definitely one of the biggest events a family will experience. By the time I arrive at a client’s home they have discussed their lifestyle requirements and they know their home inside and out. Perhaps the renovation means plans for more children, in-law suite, or larger kitchen with access to the backyard. In today’s real estate market, renovating is a logical option. Selling means you’ll have to pay commissions, land transfer taxes, and moving children from schools. Building at your existing location makes good financial sense and it’s less strain on your family. The initial conversations in the construction 26

I am a very visual person, so I listen for the first hour and ask a lot of questions. My mind begins creating a breakdown of the construction sequencing from demolition to completion. This is the beginning of my roll in the creative process. In these early meetings, our intention is to create a collaborative team environment where we all have a shared stewardship role. We discuss budgets, project management options, and ask for a commitment in the form of a deposit. Clients understand the value in proper preparation and decide for our company to represent their family vision. We then invest more time (12- 80 hours depending on the project size). This process allows for me to schedule my sub trades. Sub trade involvement in the creative process is key. Our client is introduced to the people they will see on their project and are included in our on-site conversations. The end product is a reflection of the skill of our sub trades. Our best sub trades take pride in their work and appreciate being treated as professionals. We work closely with the architect, engineer, interior designer, and arrange meetings on-site with specialized trades. I guide the process often contributing a realistic

construction perspective or a creative construction related solution through the planning process. Your contractor is the facilitator of your end product.

You ask... We Clean It!

Your project cost depends on the experience of the builder. Proper planning means a smaller contingency, therefore less chances of surprise extra’s. There are many good hands-on builders, but perhaps they are less experienced or simply crummy businessmen managing your money. As your builder, I enjoy the creative process and happily collaborate with my clients to share the same expectations. Our objective is to enjoy a productive and great construction experience together.

FAVOURITE FAMILY-FRIENDLY RESTAURANTS M O M L I F E

With a baby at home, it can be a challenge to get out for a nice meal. Not all restaurants and cafes cater well to families. Here are a few of my favourites, and why I think they should get some praise... 1. Trius + aiM I can’t say enough about the food here. I’m also impressed at how Trius + aiM has gone out of their way to welcome families. They have a room at the back of their space that they use to entertain your kids while you relax and enjoy your meal. So smart. It’s refreshing to have a fine dining establishment in the neighbourhood that has done such a wonderful job embracing families. Their kids corner menu is great and reasonably priced, too. With items like Baby Hippo (1 egg, rustic potatoes, sweet plantain, sausage & maple sweet potato cornbread) for $10, how could you go wrong? We love Trius + aiM. 2. DeCourses Cafe This place is awesome! I meet my husband here for lunch on Fridays with Luke. They specialize in bubble tea, which I haven’t had since growing up in Agincourt. I’m also partial to their Eggs Benny’s. They offer several very creative versions. I see a lot of other Moms with their kids at DeCourses, which in my opinion is a sign you’re doing something right. They have plenty of room for stroller parking and the owners and staff are very friendly with kids. I’m still working my way through the menu. They keep upgrading it, so I think I’ll have my work cut out for me.

3. Indian Cuisine By The Lake We love Indian food, but good Indian food can be hard to find. Thankfully, we don’t have to go far. Indian Cuisine By The Lake is a five-minute drive into Port Credit. Indian Cuisine By The Lake won Best Family Restaurant at the Toronto Curry Awards in 2018. My husband credits them for Luke’s birth. After 38 weeks of pregnancy, I was looking for ways to induce labour. I found one. Luke was born less than 12 hours after our dinner from Indian Cuisine By The Lake. Hence Luke’s unofficial middle name, Vindaloo.

GROCERY SHOPPING WITH DADDY Going to the grocery store is fun for kids. It gives us a chance to bond with our parents and talk about our day.

K I D

For me, it’s also a way to sneak a few treats into the cart. Treat sneaking with Mommy is tough. She’s always paying attention to what I’m doing. But, shopping with Daddy is SO MUCH EASIER. I sneak treats with him all the time. Since my brother was born, Daddy takes me shopping a lot more often - thanks, Lukey! One time, I snuck an entire box of chocolates into the cart when my Daddy wasn’t looking. Another time, I snagged a bag of candy off the shelf while riding shotgun in the front of the cart. I faked Daddy out with my left hand and grabbed the candy with my right. The hardest part is keeping a straight face. I usually crack up and he just looks at me funny and says, “You’re a pretty weird kid, you know that?” To which I reply, “I learn from the best!”

Weight loss is complex. We used to believe it was just the result of food / drinks and exercise. However, weight loss is the result of many other factors, such as hormones, sleep, inflammation, the gut microbiome, medication, unexpressed emotions, and genes. All influence your ability to lose weight and keep it off. You have the ability to influence most of these factors. If you decide to eat more vegetables for about four weeks, studies have shown that it may resolve an imbalance in your gut microbiome. Adding prebiotics to your supplements and increasing your sleep quality by adding exercise or improving sleeping hygiene, can also contribute to weight loss. Some medications can prevent you from losing weight. Know which ones they are and what to do about them. Some vitamins can help to increase your metabolism. Add them to your daily diet. At the Pharmacy, we can help you to customize a meal plan, including recommending the right supplements for you so you can reach your goals.
